BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsJumping out of the golf cart with ease, raising his arms like a champion addressing the roaring crowd after a title win, it’s hard to believe that Charley Anagnos was turning 95 years old that day. His friends describe him as “the best sherman in Crooked Hook,” “the most unique storyteller” and someone who has “more energy” than anyone they know; to his wife of nearly 67 years, he is a companion with the strength of a man who survived a German prisoner of war camp during WWII. “He’s just an all-around good guy. I’ve never heard anyone say anything cross about him,” said Kathy Pauli, a friend and wintertime neighbor of Charley. “He’s very unique and a great sherman,” began one of Charley’s shing buddies, Ken, who sat enjoying a hot dog before the man of the hour arrived to the surprise party held in his honor at Crooked Hook RV Park on March 28. “He [Charley] went out today with us,” continued Ken, pointing at his friend across the table. “He outcaught both of us. He caught 13 catsh. ... He’s one of a kind. He doesn’t act like he’s 95, that’s for sure. In preparation of the giant event, which draws both locals and out-of-towners to Sugarland Park for food, fun and musical talents, the city of Clewiston’s Public Works Department is holding its annual Spring Cleanup on April 5 to welcome guests to the fest. CONFUCIUS BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonScarlet Tanagers breed in eastern North America, from extreme southern Canada to the northern portions of the Gulf States. They winter primarily in South America along the eastern base of the Andes and western Amazonia from Panama to northwestern Bolivia, where they often join mixed species of foraging ycatchers, antbirds, woodcreepers and tropical tanagers. During migration, they are sometimes reported in South Florida in forest, shrubby habitats, as well as backyards. The Scarlet Tanager is a medium-sized songbird with a thick, rounded bill and a fairly large head. Their tail is somewhat short and broad. In spring and summer, adult males are brilliant red with black wings and tails. Females and fall immature birds are olive-yellow with darker olive wings and tails. After breeding, adult males will molt to female-like plumage, but they have black wings and a black tail. Their song is burry and rambling and their call is a harsh “chick-burr.” The oldest recorded Scarlet Tanager lived to be 12 years old. These birds prefer to forage along tree branches high in the canopy of the forest or vertically on tree trunks where they probe the bark in search of food. Their diet includes a variety of insects, snails, spiders and earthworms. Scarlet Tanagers will also perch or hover with fast wing beats in order to grab insects from leaves, bark or owers. They swallow small larvae whole, but will kill larger prey by pressing it into a branch. Scarlet Tanagers are strong iers and travel long distances. The males arrive early on their breeding grounds in order to defend loose territories, which include mating, nesting and foraging areas. On the breeding ground, the female gathers nesting materials and builds a imsy nest at a juncture of small branches 50 feet or more from the ground. She lays three to ve eggs, which are incubated for 12 to 14 days, with the young edging when they are nine to 15 days old. Parents will then feed the young birds for another two weeks. The family disperses before migrating. Scarlet Tanager PHOTO/ KENNETH COLE SCHNEIDERMale Scarlet Tanager

George Duckstein and Assistant Principal Roberto Sanchez both weighed in on the upcoming test and what it will mean for students in Hendry County and around the state. Their main concerns lie in the few years that will follow the roll out of the new test, including whether or not the new test will count towards the school accountability grade, student’s graduation requirements and teachers’ salaries. The new test, which will align to the new Florida state standards, will be “a lot more challenging” and much more “rigorous,” according to Assistant Principal Sanchez. Even if the test is similar, students will have to answer the questions in a different manner than in the past. Whereas before students merely answered multiple choice questions, students may be required to show their work on the new test to demonstrate their level of understanding, instead of merely recalling or memorizing information, said Mr. Sanchez. This falls in line with the new state standards, which endeavor to teach students concepts with a deeper level of understanding using modern technology and infusing more writing into each subject area. The probability of the test being longer in length is also quite high, said Mr. Sanchez, surpassing the 140-minute FCAT. Another great concern of the two principals is the fact that the test will not be piloted in Florida before it is rolled out. The test, said Mr. Sanchez, is being piloted in Utah, a state with far different demographics than Florida. “That’s a concern we have,” said Mr. Sanchez. “It would have been better to eld test it in Florida.” Principal Duckstein joined in on the discussion. “We’re hoping, next year, that they don’t count the new test toward school grades,” said Principal Duckstein. “That’s currently in negotiations.” This is Principal Duckstein’s rst year at Clewiston High School. His hope of raising last year’s D grade could be hampered next year by the change in exams. “When people see the results next year and kids do worse, we just hope the parents understand that they are two vastly different assessments,” said Mr. Sanchez. “We’re concerned about students and their con dence levels if there’s a big shift in grades between the two tests,” added Principal Duckstein. Con dence levels may not be the only things affected when it comes to students and the new test: next year’s 10th graders will be required to not only take the test, but pass it in order to graduate high school. It is for this reason both Principal Duckstein and Assistant Principal Sanchez would like to see a “waiver year,” where the new test is introduced but not counted towards graduation requirements -nor the school grade or teachers’ salaries for that matter. (Current 10th and 11th graders will be able to retake the FCATs next year if they do not pass them this year.) Not only do the principals’ concerns lie with the students, they also lie with the teachers who will be required to go through training to align their classroom material with the new state standards and assessment. “Teachers need time to train,” said Mr. Sanchez, citing that it is dif cult for teachers to prepare students for one exam one year and then shift to prepare students for a different exam the next year. “But teachers are people who work really hard and will rise to the occasion. They will put in an extraordinary amount of effort beyond their contractual time to rise to the occasion,” he said. Principal Duckstein added that their concerns are merely “short term concerns,” for the few short years following the roll out when everyone is getting used to the exam. “Our students are striving to be successful and they’re doing a great job,” said Principal Duckstein. “ 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 RABIES $10 € PARVO $12 € Half Price Boarding €FOR CASH ONLY!Partners in the Way to Happiness Foundation and a Drug Free World. Owen Ave Clewiston, Fl. 33440 (863) 983-6181 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee A pril 3, 2014 Public Works Director Sean Schef er, who said the numbers dwindled last year due largely in part to scheduling con icts. This year, the spring cleanup was pushed back one week to bypass other events, including Relay For Life, which was held on March 29. The rst year of the cleanup saw 250 residents coming together to pick up litter around the city. This year, excluding, perhaps, the number of participants, will be no different. Residents will meet at 9 a.m. under the chickee near the Youth Center on Osceloa Avenue, where they will break off into groups to clean a speci ed location in the city. Schef er has the city broken down into three, color-coded sections: yellow is the prime target and includes the main strip along Highway 27 extending east to Circle Drive; the second section, the green section, extends from Alverdez Ave to Clewiston High School; and the third section, the blue section, extends from Circle Drive to the last streets before it dead-ends into the dike. Groups will be assigned a speci c section to clear of any litter they can nd. Litter, Schef er explains, is anything that gets "thrown or blown around," including wrappers, bags, bottles, cans and cigarette butts. Schef er also explained that the object of the Spring Cleanup is not only to beautify the city of Clewiston, but to help pick up the things that are contaminating the environment and drinking water. "Litter is the biggest contributor to ground water pollution of anything we do," said Schef er. "And cigarette butts are the number one litter thing' in the United States. One cigarette butt has over 300 chemicals in it that are ltered out, and it takes over 10 years to decay." Schef er continued, adding that even though much of what is thrown out is "biodegradable," he cites paper fast food bags speci cally, the dyes on those bags are left to seep into the drinking water when not properly disposed of. "Nothing exists without water. Litter is something that people don't realize has a direct impact on their lives. It has a huge impact," he said. Apart from helping the environment, Schef er encourages parents to make this an all-day "family affair." "If parents go out and their kids see them picking up litter and taking care of the environment, they will be encouraged to do it, too," said Schef er, who suggests eating a good breakfast as a family, whether at home or out on the town, before meeting at 9 a.m. at the Youth Center to begin work cleaning the city and the environment. Afterward, said Schef er, parents should positively reinforce their children for the work they did by taking them to see a movie, to the playground or something equally as amusing so children are rewarded for their efforts and attribute picking up litter with fun. Interested individuals or groups can sign up in advance by calling the public works of ce at 863-983-1471 or by stopping by the facility, located at 1300 S. Olympia Street. Interested participants can also sign up the morning of the event between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. under the chickee at the Youth Center. Participants should wear light, bright-colored clothing, a cap, tennis shoes, gloves and sunscreen. Water and soda will be provided. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a brief informative talk and the handing out of assignments, and continues until 12 p.m. A hot dog lunch will be served following the clean up. CLEANContinued From Page 1 one of the best sherman in the camp and he cleans the sh even better than anyone." With such great esteem pouring from everyone who knows him, it's no wonder the folks from Crooked Hook organized such a wonderful party for Charley, equipped with hot dogs, soda, free beer on tap and a beautiful display of pictures and "paper" mache owers and stars constructed from money collected by his friends. The green bouquet was made up of dollar bills adding up to $95; next to it, a wooden tackle box held another $210 folded together to make stars to represent Charley's time in the military. Charley served during WWII. While in France, Charley was captured by German soldiers and taken to a POW camp, where he was eventually liberated by Russian soldiers and began his journey back to the United States in 1945. Charley met his wife, Laverne, not long after his return from Europe. Laverne and Charley celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on March 29, the day after Charley's birthday. Charley's friends boast about the unique raconteur of Crooked Hook. The interesting events that make up his 95-year existence add fuel to Charley's storytelling re, including one run-in with Depression-era gangster John Dillinger, whose automobile ran out of gas near Charley's family farm outside of St. Paul, Minn in the 1930s. According to Charley, one of Dillinger's men came to the farm and asked for gas to ll up his car. Charley said he remembers the man being "very nice," which could have been attributed to his father telling Charley to get exactly what that man wanted. Before Charley scooted off to his party, he relayed some advice for those of us looking for the secret to a long, happy and healthy life. "I don't think there's any [secret], but that God was with you. And I got lucky," said Charley. "I'm just a good guy with no brains." BIRTHDAYContinued From Page 1 PHOTO/ MELISSA BELTZCharley Anagnos arrived at his surprise birthday party to a cheering crowd and a sea of smiling faces. Charley turned 95 on March 28 and his friends and neighbors threw him a party at the Crooked Hook RV Park in Clewiston to celebrate.
