2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 6, 2014Crossword Puzzle Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 1 cent per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.43/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.44/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 37.0 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 12.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 17.6 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 26.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “Gasoline prices, as expected, continued their rise over the last week,” said GasBuddy. com Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski. “The pace in the increases slowed somewhat versus the week prior, but motorists shouldn’t get excited over the one week slow down in the rise in prices. We fully expect that as re neries get into the prime of maintenance season, gasoline prices nationwide will continue to rise, and perhaps at the fastest rate we could see in 2014. We’re starting to see cleaner burning summer gasoline come in to view across the nation, and with lower production as re neries prepare for an increase in demand and for summer spec gasoline, price spikes can occur,” Laskoski said. BY KIMBERLEY THOMPSON Sunrise Community, Inc.Hendry County Commissioner Janet Taylor joined United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Southwest Florida in Clewiston to celebrate Black History Month. The event was organized by Clewiston’s Harlem Library and it encouraged local residents to learn more about the signi cant contributions African-Americans have made in the ornate tapestry of U.S. History. This is especially important to people with disabilities, as the disability rights movement was modeled upon the success of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. By reading works of the time and historic biographies, the director of the Harlem Library, Mrs. Florida Thomas, and Barbara Dikes, a dedicated library volunteer, hoped to celebrate the richness of Black History Month by sharing personal experiences of key historic leaders and social change agents. The month-long-celebration featured literature, highlighted inventions, identied social justice milestones and allowed people the opportunity to share their love of the written word created by African Americans. UCP’s of ce manager, Debbie Howell, said, “Our purpose in participating together is to make everyone aware of the rich heritage we all share.” 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 6, 2014 COURTESY PHOTOSpecial thanks to Hendry County Commissioner Janet Taylor (far left), library volunteer Barbara Dikes (upper right), and Harlem Library Director Florida Thomas (lower right). The annual, two-day event is one of the Southeast’s biggest agricultural events. The auction brings in hundreds of people -largely farmers, land owners, growers and construction companies -interested in buying and selling large equipment, including farm tractors, excavators, trucks, wheel loaders and other equipment. “This is far and away the biggest auction -certainly in Florida, and probably in the Southeast,” said Carl Carter, media director for the Weeks Auction Company, the organizer of the Sugarland Auction. 19th Annual Sugarland Auction

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 6, 2014 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonIt’s not too late to register or volunteer to help at the 13th Annual Big “O” Birding Festival, which will be held March 9 through 13. For information about the programs or events, please visit www. bigobirdingfestival.com. Purple GallinuleOne of the birds that will be highlighted at the Festival is the Purple Gallinule. The Purple Gallinule is a medium-sized rail with huge yellow feet, long toes and purple-blue plumage with a green back. It has a red triangular bill tipped with yellow, a light-blue forehead shield and white undertail feathers. Purple Gallinules make a cackling or clucking sound and swims on the surface of the water like a duck. It also walks on oating plants and is often seen clambering through dense aquatic vegetation. It feeds on seeds, fruits and invertebrates. Purple Gallinule will y short distances with their feet dangling. Nesting occurs on oating or emergent vegetation. The clutch size varies from ve to 10 buffcolored eggs with brown spots. Incubation ranges from 18 to 20 days. Both parents participate in incubation, feeding and caring for the chicks. The young begin to forage between one and two weeks of age and can feed themselves by three weeks of age. Purple Gallinule chicks are black, while juveniles are buffy tan with a greenish back, dull bill, a dull-blue frontal shield and yellow legs. Purple Gallinule adults and their young are seen inland during the summer at various sites, including Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest and County Roads 833 and 835. They may also be seen in Clewiston along the rim canal or Lake Okeechobee marshes. Purple Gallinules are observed at STA-5, 20 miles south of Clewiston, year round. The community is invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for the March 8 and March 9 birdwatching trip to STA-5. To sign up for the trips, which begin at 8:30 a.m., individuals should send an email to Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail. com with their name and contact information, including an emergency cell number, the number in their party and their preferred date of participation. Individuals may also leave this information at 863674-0695 or 863-517-0202. Bring water, snacks and lunch. Individuals are invited to share their birdwatching experiences and post suggestions for featured birdwatching sites on the HendryGlades Audubon or The Clewiston News Facebook pages. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 6, 2014 BullyingBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchWith the loss of faith in society, there are surprising side effects. Bullying may be one of them. I remember talking to a woman who was being bullied by her husband and depressed. I reminded her, “You are a child of God, too!” and I saw her smile as she began to contemplate what this means. She came back and we were able to re ect on her home situation; I reminded her that “God doesn’t make any junk!” The force to deal with what amounted to character destructionbullying came from (1) within and (2) from her relationship with God. There was a play some years back called, “The Code.” It looked at why our soldiers turned against our country when they were captured by the North Koreans during that con ict. Those who were considered turncoats and served North Korean propaganda purposes were interviewed when they were returned. They were not tortured, nor drugged, but skillfully manipulated by their guards. Captors would play them off against each other; for example wanting them to “talk” and then arbitrarily giving one a coat to cope with severe winter cold. The others would believe he got the coat by “squealing” and “if he talked, why shouldn’t I?” The result was destruction of morale, emotional isolation and fear. Persuasion was easier because many of those captured had little knowledge of our history and values. They were easily swayed by interpretations of their captors and could not refute when false statements were made about the U. S. Americans are social people. Many are not comfortable when they are alone. The effort to be “one of the crowd” can be used to force an unhealthy conformity to values that go “against the grain.” The heart of the Christian message has to do with going to “the lost sheep” (Matthew 10:6), the “unclean (Matthew 15:1ff), the ones rejected by society (Mark 5:1ff), those with the “aids” of their day -the lepers (Luke 5:12), those regarded as sinful by others (Luke 7:36ff), and Jesus cautions against judging others, condemning them and forgiving (Luke 6:37ff). In other words, there is no place for “bullying” among the faithful. In my own experience, faith has given me strength to stand alone when it is needed, and to objectively look at my critics. I balance between what goes on in society and holding my own. It is important for our younger generations to realize that nobody can control emotions and moods unless we let them; nobody who has ever taken time to know us really disrespects us. No one can make us happy or sad unless we allow them to do so. In my own life, happiness has often come as a result of being intensely involved in what I am doing, being fully committed to something, being busy with a full schedule and taking satisfaction in accomplishments. Sadness can come when we concern ourselves with things we can’t change or from brooding about things when we should ignore them. I have told people in the past that if I make them unhappy, perhaps they should stay away; or if someone makes me unhappy, I do whatever I can to avoid them, or con ne our relationship to formalities and only necessary contacts. Parents, if you’re worried about your children being bullied, give them values, give them faith, see that their lives are full of wholesome things, teach them to stand alone and become individuals rather than worrying about being part of a crowd; teach them that rejection comes from those who have needs of their own and not always healthy needs at that. I take comfort in the words of the Psalmist (Psalm 8:4ff) when he talks about us, “You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor,” and echoed by the author of Hebrews (2:11ff), “Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family!” No need to feel down or weak; we certainly have some wonderful relatives out there! RELIGION NEWS AND INFORMATION Samuel S. Thomas The Florida Department of Health and the Florida Department of Education announced improvement in healthy behaviors for Florida’s high school youth. Recent statistics from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicate signi cant progress in three health behaviors that contribute to a healthier weight for Florida’s students. New data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey show improvements in the following areas: A decrease in the percentage of high school students who drank soda one or more times daily from 31 percent in 2007 to 22.1 percent in 2013. An increase in the percentage of high school students who had suf cient physical activity, de ned as 60 minutes per day on ve or more of the past seven days, from 38.4 percent in 2007 to 43.9 percent in 2013. A decrease in the percentage of high school students who watched three or more hours of TV on an average school day, from 40.2 percent in 2007 to 31.2 percent in 2013. “These encouraging results demonstrate that Florida’s high school students are acting on the health messages provided through collaboration with our partners like the Department of Education,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. “This joint effort has created supportive school environments that help our students make healthier choices, such as drinking more water, being more active and watching less television.” “We’re proud to partner with the Florida Department of Health to promote healthy behaviors for our students,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “The survey results show that students are making informed decisions that allow them to focus on learning that will prepare them for success in college, a career and in life.” Healthiest Weight Florida is a public-private collaboration bringing together state agencies, not-for-pro t organizations, businesses and entire communities to help Florida’s children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living. Hendry County Special Needs Shelter The Hendry County Special Needs Shelter (PSN) is a temporary emergency facility capable of providing care to residents whose medical conditions exceeds the capabilities of the Red Cross shelter, but is not severe enough to require hospitalization. In the event of a hurricane or other catastrophe, Hendry County Emergency Management will attempt to provide special sheltering and transportation for those who have a chronic medical condition requiring special needs. It is important to register every year due to limited medical resources and limited space at the special needs shelter. It is also strongly advised that residents pursue primary evacuation plans with family, friends, neighbors, Church organizations, etc. Residents who feel that they or someone they know will need to go to the Special Needs Shelter and are not pre-registered at this time, please contact Kelly Dyess at the Hendry County Emergency Management Of ce at 863-674-5402. Residents can also pick up the registration form at the Florida Department of Health in Hendry County. Once the completed registration is received and reviewed, residents will receive noti cation as to whether or not they qualify for the Special Needs Shelter. Should it be determined that a resident's needs do not meet the Special Needs Shelter criteria, they will be noti ed of other shelters that are available in their area in which they can seek refuge. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 9 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 6, 2014 of kids who have signed up for the program, with an increase of nearly 25 percent from the rst year, according to Recreation Director Lance Ramer. This year, 432 participants between the ages of three and 15 comprise the 36 teams. With the lowest cost for participation of any baseball/softball league within a 100-mile radius, according to Ramer, city staff are ecstatic to see so many of the community's youth taking advantage of this recreation opportunity. "It's my favorite time of the year," boasted Ramer, who says he's constantly busy during baseball and softball season -but it's just the sort of chaos he thrives on. Preparing for such a busy season takes time and effort. The coaches who help lead the youth are all volunteers and are subject to a local background check, as well as training through the National Youth Sports Alliance, out of West Palm Beach, and the Positive Coaching Alliance, which strives to build life lessons into the game. During their training, potential coaches learn how to run a successful and productive practice. Once they are approved to coach, rst-timers are placed with veteran coaches so they can learn the ins and outs rst-hand. Umpires also serve on a volunteer basis and must complete a background check before they can facilitate a game. Volunteers are a key component of the youth sports program; without dedicated volunteers, the cost to participate would be much higher. Another key component to keeping the cost to participate low is the sponsors who support the teams and the program in general. Area businesses are offered four levels of sponsorship, ranging from $1,000 to $100 donations. The donations help support the teams for all recreation programs and help pay for the equipment and uniforms used during the season. Ramer says the system of volunteers and sponsors is important because it helps keep the parents in the stands watching their kids play. That's where he wants to see the parents, says Ramer, in the stands instead of grilling hamburgers in the snack shop or worrying about where the uniforms and equipment will come from. "I want the stands lled with friends and family. ... I want the parents to see their kids playing and having fun, instead of making them work concession -unless they want to, of course," says Ramer, who remembers his family in the stands when he was young playing youth sports. Ramer is so focused on making sure the parents are able to watch their kids play that he does not schedule practice on Wednesday nights because of church services, and does not schedule practice or games on Friday nights or weekends because he knows how important that time is for families. Ramer's focus on families carries over, of course, to the kids who participate in his program. "There is so much going on in the world that kids -even at such a young age -have to worry about. When they step out onto my practice eld, they can leave all that stuff behind," says Ramer. "I want to make sure the kids are happy, healthy, feel secure and are building memories." Mary Ruth Prouty (right), of the Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades counties, poses with Coderre and his progress board. BY PAT DOBBINS Florida Department Of HealthAs part of State Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong's Healthiest Weight Initiative, the Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades counties came up with a creative idea to track the progress of the "Healthier Me 2014 Initiative." This initiative is a "challenge" to folks in the areas of eastern and western Hendry County and Glades County to lose 2,014 pounds in the year 2014! Losing just seven percent of one's body weight helps reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. (For example, a 200-pound person would need to lose 14 pounds.) The initiative is not only about losing weight, but also will help individuals to: improve their health, increase their physical activity, eat more fruits and veggies and manage stress. Norm Coderre, RN and senior community health nurse with the Division of Children's Medical Services at the Health Department in LaBelle, and his wife Sharon O'Leary constructed a "Goal Tracking Board." The board was placed outside of the Health Department in LaBelle and will be updated to show the progress as the year goes along. A huge "thank you" to Norm and his wife for constructing this board for the communities! The materials and labor for the board were donated by Norm and his wife and their company, Bee Hammock Honey. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 6, 2014 BY BUTCH WILSON Clewiston MuseumThe youngster looked like a weary old man as he moved slowly across the prison yard. His thin, emaciated face winced painfully as iron manacles bit relentlessly into festering leg sores. Shuf ing crab-like, the youth entered a cell where an awaiting guard hurriedly locked the door with an ominous click. In the dark fastness of his imprisonment, the young prisoner felt both physical bondage and loneliness; however, his spirit never wavered as brown eyes burnt with the fervor of a revolutionist. Cuba's national hero, Jose Marti, was imprisoned at the age of 16 for political views that challenged Spain's rule over Cuba. He was later released at of the age 18 and exiled by the Spanish government to Spain. During his exile in Spain, he was allowed to attend a university in hopes that his political views would change. During his exile, in hopes that Spanish civilians would become sympathetic to his cause, he wrote articles and tracts portraying the injustices that Spanish authorities committed in Cuba. In June 1894, Jose Marti graduated with a degree in civil and canonical law. He then traveled to Paris and later to Mexico where he became politically active. His desire to see Cuban independence made him a restless individual. He traveled abroad numerous times, living in Guatemala, Venezuela, the United States and the West Indies. During these years, Jose Marti wrote numerous articles, essays, magazines and poems that expressed his talents as an intellectual who sought liberty and justice for all. Jose Marti would later align himself with Cuban revolutionist and secretly enter Cuba. The expeditionary force was ill-prepared to battle Spanish troops. He was killed in the Battle of Dos Rios. Today, Cubans -regardless of their current political views -celebrate Jose Marti as the nationalist leader of Cuba because of his zealous, unwavering commitment to Cuban independence. On Monday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m., the Clewiston Museum will be hosting, "Charla, a Chat with Jose Marti." This Chautauqua presentation is presented by Chaz Mena. The year is 1891, and JosŽ Mart’ (as portrayed by Chaz Mena) is preparing for his rst trip to Tampa, Fla. Time is running out for the Cuban independence movement and Mart’ must inspire and galvanize Cuban immigrants in America to join and support the revolution against Spain. As he readies himself for the journey, Mart’ re ects upon his childhood, his studies, his writings and his loves. The wonderful "Charla," which in Spanish means "a chat," will give great insight to the challenges Mart’ faced in jumpstarting the Cuban Revolution. Chaz Mena is an accomplished actor with an impressive resume of dramatic accomplishments off Broadway in regional theaters, and in lm and television. Chaz has just been selected to host The Quincentennial Minute, celebrating Florida's 500-year anniversary; a timeline with 25 one-minute episodes in Florida history will be delivered by Chaz in both English and Spanish, then aired on all PBS stations in the state. This free program is part of a speaker series grant that the Clewiston Museum received from the Florida Humanities Council. It's going to be a great night at the museum, so come join us. Refreshments will be provided after the program. Please contact the Clewiston Museum at 863-983-2870 or email clewistonmuseum@embarqmail.com with any questions about this upcoming program. Apostle of Cuban Independence reportedly saw a gold minivan driving down W. Circle Drive, ashing its lights on and off. The van then turned onto W. Crescent Ave and parked in a vacant driveway, where the driver exited the vehicle, adjusted his seat and began leaning over into the passenger side area, according to a report released by CPD. Of cer Chamberlain pulled up to the vehicle and approached the driver, Rollin Lafollette, 26, who told the of cer he pulled into the driveway because his vehicle was overheating. The passenger, 22-yearold Sasha Pelaez, told a second CPD of cer that she and Lafollette pulled into the driveway for a quiet moment together. During the course of their conversation, Of cer Chamberlain noticed Lafollette grabbing at something in his left pocket and could smell the "distinct odor of marijuana" in the van, according to the report. Lafollette consented to a pat down which uncovered a hypodermic needle and a bent metal teaspoon with burn marks; of cers searched the minivan next and found a small bag containing marijuana, a glass pipe and a small bag containing methamphetamine, according to the report. Both Lafollette and Pelaez were arrested and taken to CPD for holding. When Lafollette arrived at the station, he reportedly told of cers to make sure they get the dollar he dropped on the patrol car oor, which he had been chewing on because of a tooth ache. Of cer Chamberlain recovered the dollar from the oorboard and allowed the wet bill to dry. Once the bill was dry, Of cer Chamberlain was able to scrape white crystals from it, which tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the report. Lafollette was charged with possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, three counts narcotic equipment possession, destroying evidence and driving with a suspended license. Pelaez was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and one count narcotic equipment possession. Butler Clerk of Circuit Court Hendry County, Florida 463074 CN 3/6,13,20,27/2014 works at Clewiston High School (CHS) as the adviser for the Explorer Program, which gives students interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of such a career rst-hand. "Petersen is a woman of character and integrity who has served this community over the years and has proven herself a dedicated leader," said Commissioner Gardner. With four out of four votes in Petersen's favor, Commissioner Gardner was not the only of cial to praise Petersen and the potential she will bring to the table. "I thought Kristine Petersen was a good choice for several reasons," began Commissioner Julio Rodriguez, who seconded Commissioner Gardner's motion to appoint Petersen. "She's been in this community for a long time. She worked at the police department for quite a while, and she works in the schools with the drug programs. I think she's going to be ne." Commissioner Rodriguez revealed that Petersen plans to run in the next regular election and said the interim position will be good insight and experience for her before she runs in November. Mayor Phillip Roland weighed in on Petersen's nomination, saying Petersen was a hard worker and anticipates good things from her, especially from a project perspective. "She's put together programs at the school, and when she worked for the police department she put together programs. For instance, the memorial area in the park is a big thing ... and maybe Kristine will take that on," said Mayor Roland, eluding to the proposed memorial park the students of CHS's Explorer Program intend to organize. "I think all the commissioners should really have things they want to accomplish and have goals, and I'm sure Kristine will have that, so that's exciting for me." As far as the commission as a whole is concerned, both Mayor Roland and Commissioner Rodriguez feel Petersen will add cohesiveness to the group. "I hope to have a uni ed commission that's working for the bene t of the city. I'm sure Kristine will do that. I don't think there's any negatives with Kristine and that's a really good thing," said Mayor Roland. Commissioner Rodriguez added that Petersen will be a good addition to the commission as it moves forward and looks towards the future. "[Petersen's nomination] is good as we move forward. We have to get back to working together and making decisions together for the betterment of our city. We all have our own minds and we all make our own decisions, but at the end of the day it has to be the best decision for the city of Clewiston and the residents of the city -that's our job, and to make sure the citizens of Clewiston have a good quality of life," said Commissioner Rodriguez. Petersen was reticent and did not divulge much about her nomination or her feelings about it. "I'm low key. I'm just going to try to do my best," said Petersen. Petersen was sworn in as commissioner after the last city commission meeting on Feb. 17 and will formally take her oath at the next meeting, to be held on March 17 in the Clewiston city commission chambers at 5 p.m. COMMISSIONERContinued From Page 1
