BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsThe glittering Golden Apple Award was presented to 10 phenomenal educators in teaching’s biggest night of the year. The Golden Apple Award is bestowed upon those outstanding public school teachers in Hendry County; those teachers who go the extra mile to ensure their students receive the highest level of academic achievement and do everything in their power to get them there, including coming to work early and staying at work late. As the 21st Annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Dinner commenced on Feb. 4, excited teachers, along with their family and friends, gathered at the John Boy Auditorium for dinner and a show. That is what 90 participants of the Skydive Ultra Run signed up for on Feb. 1. Ultra running -running more than 50 miles at a time -is a “relatively normal thing,” according to Eric Friedman, race director for the Skydive Ultra Run. “A lot of people run 100-mile races. morous movies depicting how the ten Golden Apple nominees spend their “free time.” The rst movie, set to the song “Walking on Sunshine,” showed ve of the female nominees splashing around at the beach, their faces imbedded on cartoon bodies. Laughter lled the room as two nominees splashed around in the “sharklled” water, and two others buried each other in the sand. Not to leave the other ve nominees out, including the only male teacher to be nominated for the award, the second movie showed those ve dancing an exceptionally well-performed Riverdance routine. Presenter Jodi Bell assured the audience that “teaching is not the only talent we have in Hendry County.” Bell then introduced a special guest who came all the way from Tallahassee. Brian Dassler, Florida Department of Education’s deputy chancellor for Educator Quality, extended a warm greeting from the Department’s Commissioner, Pam Stewart, and Gov. Rick Scott. “Thank you for making Florida the best place for our students to learn,” said Gov. Scott through Dassler. Before the Golden Apple Awards were distributed, Ron Hamel, of Gulf Citrus Growers Association, presented the Brilliant Orange Award, which was given to six exceptional teachers from Hendry County’s elementary, middle and high schools. The winners received a plaque and $50. Next, Deputy Superintendent Gordon Swaggerty Jr. presented the Heritage Award. In its third year, the Heritage Award was presented to Bo Davis, a veteran Hendry County school board member. Davis sat on the board for 32 years after he was appointed in November 1968. In those 32 years, Davis never missed a meeting. Swaggerty calculated that Davis attended 768 meetings, not including special meetings, during his eight consecutive terms. Finally, the moment came when the ten teachers would be introduced and awarded for their commitment to Hendry County schools. The principals from each school introduced a student who has been in uenced by the nominated teacher. The students were current and former students, one even drove four hours from the University of Florida to introduce her former middle school history teacher. One by one, students recounted funny stories about moments in the classroom and relived the signi cant steps those teachers took to change that student’s life for the better. As the teachers accepted their awards and posed for a picture alongside their respective principal and student, the moment came when the Teacher of the Year would be announced. Superintendent Paul Puletti had the honor of announcing the outstanding teacher, but rst recounted a story about what makes Hendry County schools so special. Puletti said he recently walked into the administrative of ce of one school, and was greeted by the receptionist with, “Hey baby, what do you need?” Flattered by the receptionist’s compliment, he thought to himself that “he still had it.” What he didn’t realize was the kindergartner standing behind him to whom the receptionist was addressing. That, said Puletti, is what makes Hendry County schools so great. In that moment, he said, the kindergartner was the most important person in the room. Puletti gave up the podium for a moment to allow the 2014 Teacher of the Year to share her experiences representing Hendry County’s public schools. Keri Alford gave a heartwarming speech about her efforts as a teacher and said she was honored to have represented her school and humbled to have represented Hendry County. Puletti returned to the podium and asked for the “envelope, please.” The 2015 District Teacher of the Year was awarded to Kim Jordan, exceptional student education teacher at LaBelle Elementary School. The 13-year veteran teacher was moved to tears as she accepted the award. Jordan thanked her boss, who she said inspires her and requires more from her ever day -a quality that she appreciates and welcomes because it pushes her to become the best teacher she can be. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 6, 2014 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonFrom Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, bird watchers from more than 100 countries are expected to participate in the 17th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) from Feb. 14 to 17. Anyone, anywhere in the world can count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count and enter their sightings at www.BirdCount. org. The information, gathered by tens of thousands of volunteers, helps track the health of bird populations at a scale that would not otherwise be possible. The GBBC is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society with partner Bird Studies Canada. Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers will enter data for participants who don’t have internet access. Please contact Margaret England to request a copy of the tally sheet which would need to be returned to Hendry-Glades Audubon before March 1. Cooper’s HawkThe Cooper’s hawk is a crow-sized raptor with a slender body, broad rounded wings and a very long, rounded tail. They have a apap-glide ight pattern. Females are larger and more powerfully built than the males. Adult plumage is steely blue-gray above with orange and white barred underparts. Juveniles are brown above with a golden buff head and wellde ned, dark brown streaks on their upper breast. The oldest known Cooper’s Hawk was 20 years and four months old. These birds are usually silent. Their most common call is a loud, grating “cak-cak-cak” made by either sex while defending their nest site or during courtship. In the eastern United States, they are found hunting for birds in deep forests, leafy subdivisions and backyards. Cooper’s Hawks capture birds with their feet, which they then kill by repeated squeezing. They have also been reported drowning their prey. Males usually take smallto medium-sized songbirds, while females prey upon larger birds, like doves, Pileated Woodpeckers and crows. In Florida, most Cooper’s Hawk nesting occurs from April through July in the northern two-thirds of the state. The male builds a nest 25 to 50 feet above the ground in pine, oaks or other trees growing near a clearing. The nest is completed in about two weeks with very little help from the female. This sticknest, about 27 inches, in diameter is lined with bark akes and green twigs. The female incubates three to ve pale-blue to greenish eggs for 30 to 36 days. The male provides most of the food for the female and hatchlings until the young are ready to edge at 30 to 34 days of age. The community is invited to participate in upcoming birding trips on Feb. 15, 16 and 17 at STA-5 (Stormwater Treatment Area 5). A few volunteers will be working on the Great Backyard Bird Count survey during the day. Birders and/ or photographers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the STA-5 Deer Fence Canal Trailhead. To make a reservation or to request a GBBC tally sheet, please email Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or by phone at 863-674-0695 or 863517-0202. "The two January events highlight the everpresent challenge of balancing our water supply mission with essential ood control," said Susan Sylvester, chief of the Water Control Operations Bureau. "In the dry season, a portion of the rain falling over a large area during several days can be stored in the system. Deluges along the coast require intense ood control operations." On Jan. 9 and 10, approximately 15 inches of rain fell in just three hours in the Boynton Beach area. This stormwater was discharged to tide to help alleviate local ooding, which can occur during intense storms. On Jan. 29, 30 and 31, a widespread rainfall event dropped more than two inches across South Florida, with up to ve inches in localized areas. Water managers were able to capture some of this water in storage for the remainder of the dry season. District-wide, 3.60 inches of rain fell in January, representing 187 percent of average, or 1.67 inches above average for the month. Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties, along with the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), were the wettest portions of South Florida for the month. Totals included: Palm Beach: 7.02 inches; 237 percent of average; 4.06 inches above average Martin and St. Lucie: 6.89 inches; 327 percent of average; 4.78 inches above average East EAA: 3.96 inches; 228 percent of average; 2.22 inches above average Lake Okeechobee stood at 13.95 NGVD on Feb. 3, which is 0.70 inches below its historic average for this date. The lake received 2.53 inches of direct rainfall in January, representing 190 percent of average or 0.84 inches above average.Dry Season ForecastSouth Florida’s Dry Season November to May About 18 inches of rainfall is the average. May and October are important transition months. March, April and May are the driest months because evaporation is highest. Highlights of the overall 2013/14 South Florida dry season forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center include: Below-normal precipitation. A possibility of near to slightly above-normal temperatures. For reference, South Florida precipitation in an average dry season is 12 to 15 inches in the interior/west; 15 to 21 inches in the east. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchI have closed many a Church service with a benediction, including the words from Paul to the Philippians: “…the peace of God which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (chapter 4, verse 7). Certainly there does not seem to be any peace on the horizon. The Mideast seems to be in turmoil once more; problems of terrorist acts bring Kenya to the fore, Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan are the origins of regular reports of trouble. This peace that so many of us want to see seems quite elusive. As I read further, Paul admonishes those in Philippi to hold to “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put in practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (verses 8-9). It seems Paul is saying that peace begins within us. Paul’s life was certainly not without problems; nor was the Old Testament era a time without wars, conquests, captivity or struggles. Worldly peace certainly is something that “passes understanding.” As I re ected on Paul’s advice, he talked about our individual actions, thoughts, deeds, thinking on what is true or noble or right or pure or admirable. Concentrating on things as they should be, can be a source of peace. Doing what is right and not getting dragged down by things that go against us will keep us in a more peaceful frame of mind. Paul recognized that peace begins, and can end, within each of us. There may be little we can do to change what is going on around us, but we can change what goes on within. I can choose to make myself happy or unhappy, at peace within or burdened with worries over which I may not really have any control. One of our great thinkers was reported to have said,“I worried about many things in life, most of which never happened,” and pointed out the futility of dwelling on negatives by his wry comment. Mark, likewise, points out that it is what is within, “For from within men’s hearts, come evil thoughts…” (Mark 7:21). Scriptures provide us with the answer to the prayer, “Lord, change the world, beginning with me.” The peace that passes understanding begins within; when it happens to enough of us, the world will change. In the meantime, the peace which we seek must not depend on what’s going on around us, we won’t nd it in the news or in daily confrontations. Rather, it will come from dwelling on right things, peaceful things, loving things and persons. One of my mentors wrote about a minister who was going to visit a church member and arrived at the gate to the pathway going up to his front porch. There was a large dog just inside of the gate. He called to the member sitting on the porch and asked, “Will the dog bite?” The owner replied, “Only if you’re afraid of him.” As for me, I like dogs and in over 40 years of visiting homes, have had two occassions where one tried to bite. Once when as I was walking up a set of wooden stairs with the dog laying underneath. He was too lazy to get up and tried to bite me through my shoes. Useless! Another time was with a heavily gloved hand on a cold winter day; the result was some pressure on my ngers, but nothing more than a warning from a disturbed canine. Peace is like that; it’s what is within that determines what happens to us and whether we have serenity or are riddled with anxieties. Dogs read us well; I hope to send them a message of peace from within when I encounter them. It seems I’m capable of doing it! We can do it in other areas of our lives too. SCHOOLContinued From Page 8 BY BUTCH WILSON e Clewiston MuseumOn Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., guest speaker, archeologist Melissa Timo, is presenting, “As You Are Now, So Once Was I.” She will portray Florida’s cemeteries as not being as quiet as one might think. Instead, these burial places are rich with hidden symbols, public proclamations and old, sometimes odd, traditions. Studies of cemeteries can bring life to families, communities and cultures long after they’ve left Florida behind. This free program is part of the Museum’s speaker series, which is funded through a partnership grant by the Florida Humanities Council. Miss Timo is the Florida Public Archeology Network (FPAN) outreach coordinator for the southwest region, which includes Lee, Collier, Glades and Hendry Counties. She has worked as an archeologist for 13 years and has done extensive research on the short–lived Spanish settlement that was established by Tristan de Luna at Pensacola Bay in 1559. The Clewiston Public Schools and the Clewiston Museum are also partnering to provide free programs that help educate students and the public on the Holocaust of World War II. The Holocaust Museum, located in Naples, Florida, is displaying a boxcar in Clewiston that was used in Austria during the war. The Boxcar Exhibit will be on display at the Clewiston Museum from Feb. 11 to Feb. 21. The programs also include Holocaust survivors who will present talks about their experiences at the Clewiston Public Schools and the Clewiston Museum. On Friday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m., museum guest speaker Cesare Frustaci will talk about the trials and tribulations he endured during the Holocaust. Mr. Frustaci was born in Hungary, where he was later abandoned and forced to survive on his own at the age of nine. His amazing story will touch the hearts of all. Please contact the Clewiston Museum at 863983-2870 or email the museum at clewistonmuseum@embarqmail.com for additional information on these upcoming programs. the Skydive Ultra Run. This is the second year Friedman and his friend -known as Smitty -have held the race. Both years the race has been held at Airglades Airport, where Skydive Spaceland is located. Skydive Spaceland is Friedman’s home skydiving place. He has been jumping there for more than six years and said it is home to some of the nicest and friendliest people he has ever met. Last year, 20 participants signed up for the race and eight of those participants jumped before their race. This year’s race saw 70 more participants sign up, totaling 90 runners/skydivers. However, not every participant skydives, and not every participant runs 100 miles. Friedman said of the 90 runners, 60 jumped before their race, 12 signed up to run the 100-mile race, 15 signed up to run 50 miles and 15 signed up to run 50 kilometers (about 32 miles). There were also participants who ran a marathon (26.2 miles), a half-marathon (13.1 miles) or a 10k (roughly 6.2 miles). Coupling ultra running and skydiving is something that has never been done before, according to Friedman, who said his hours of running allowed time for the idea to hatch and foster in his mind. “We run about 100 miles per week -Smitty and I do for these 100-mile races. So when you spend that much time running, it leaves you a lot of time to think about stuff,” said Friedman. Smitty said he and Friedman toyed with the idea for a while, but it was Friedman who made the idea a reality. “This is his [Friedman’s] baby. This was his vision. ... He took the idea and ran with it,” said Smitty. Last year’s race was featured in UltraRunning magazine, which, along with the website Smitty and Friedman created, helped promote the event and made it grow nearly 450 percent from 2013 to 2014. “We didn’t think it would get to this point, but we’ve been promoting it and pushing it,” said Smitty. Participants of the race ranged in age, size and sex. Friedman pointed to one of the runners as he was rounding the corner toward the provision area. That man, said Friedman, was 80-pounds heavier six months ago. Joel Pecker was 345 pounds before he began losing weight in order to qualify for the event; his goal was to lose the weight and skydive before running a 50-mile race. Another runner rounded the corner shortly thereafter; 51-year-old Ron Martin was the rst to sign up for the race. His rainbow-colored beard shown in the gleaming sun as he passed by the water table, cheering with the onlookers as he went by. “His beard is always that color. Unless he gets scared, then it turns gray,” joked Friedman. Martin would go on to nish his 100-mile race in 22 hours and 36 minutes -the fastest time in the 100-mile division. Each runner had his own story as to why he was running in the race, but perhaps one of the more inspirational stories was that of Brian Thomas. The Michigan-native is battling stage four melanoma. Diagnosed last year, Thomas received a round of chemotherapy less than 10 days before the race -the shirt wrapped around his bare head and the layers of sunscreen on his skin divulged the secret. Thomas calls running “chemo cross-training.” One mile feels like 26, he said, but that wasn’t enough to quell his optimism. “This has been a really great experience. ... Next year, there’s no limits. Next year, it’s the 100-miler,” Thomas said. Thomas was not the only cancer survivor at the race: Denise Carter completed a 50k and also underwent chemotherapy treatments less than 10 days before the race. Runners continued to circle the eight-mile loop around Airglades Airport throughout the day. Some runners would nish within minutes, others within hours; still others would nish the next day when their 100 miles was nally up. But as those runners dragged themselves across the nish line, their accomplishments would be nothing short of amazing. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 6, 2014 SKYDIVEContinued From Page 1 THIS HAS BEEN A REALLY GREAT EXPERIENCE. ... According to a report released by the Hendry County Sheriff's Of ce, deputies were called to Hendry Regional Medical Center in reference to an alleged battery that had occurred on Jan. 21. The victim, who was recovering from injuries at the hospital, told deputies she was riding in the car with 21-year-old Richard Suarez when the two began arguing. She said she tried to get out of the car, but Suarez began punching her until she lost consciousness. The victim then told deputies that after she regained consciousness, she realized she was in the trunk of Suarez's car and could hear him talking on the phone with someone, saying he was going to kill her. The victim told deputies she was able to escape from the trunk using the emergency release latch and began running away from the car. Suarez allegedly ran after her and head butted her when he caught up with her, causing her to again lose consciousness. When the victim woke up, she stated she was in the back seat of the car and Suarez was again on the phone, telling the person on the other line he had the victim "knocked out" in the car and the person needed to come pick her up before he kills her. The victim managed to escape from the car and ran towards the woods to hide, according to the report, where Suarez followed her, threatening that he had a gun and was going to kill her. At that time, the person Suarez was talking to on the phone showed up and took the victim away from the location. The victim told deputies she had hesitated to press charges against Suarez at rst, but after being in pain in the hospital for a few days, she decided to call the authorities. Deputies found Suarez at his home in Clewiston on Jan. 24, but were unable to locate the car in which the incident allegedly happened. Deputies also noticed deep cuts and scratches on Suarez's face, which he said he got while doing yard work, according to the report. Suarez was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and kidnapping and is currently being held at the Hendry County Jail on a $200,000 bond. BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsOn Jan. 30, members of the community gathered at the Clewiston Public Library and watched as Library Director Ava Barrett was presented with a $35,850 check to bene t the Hendry County Library System. The money was a collection of various donations from area businesses, including the U.S. Sugar Corp., which donated $5,000, and fundraising efforts. "This is a big deal for Hendry County," began Gregg Gillman, president of the Hendry County Economic Development Council (EDC), one of the key players in making the donation possible. Much of the money presented to the library was raised at the Captain Hendry Dinner, held on Dec. 9 at the historic Captain Hendry House in LaBelle. The dinner was sponsored by the EDC's Education Task Force, a special branch of the EDC that brings the business community together with educators and parents to improve Hendry County's academic excellence. Some of the goals of the Task Force include making sure students have the necessary math, reading, writing and speaking skills to acquire a postsecondary education or to enter the workforce, and ensuring parents, community organizations, businesses, industry and others are partnering to work on behalf of the students for academic excellence. Representatives from area businesses, including the U.S. Sugar Corp., First Bank and Quality Electric, as well as representatives from the academic arena, including school administrators and the superintendent, make up the Task Force. City Commissioner Mali Gardner, who attended the check presentation ceremony, sits on the Task Force as a representative of First Bank. She said one major goal of the Task Force is to bring in and retain quality teachers and to foster relationships between the business community and parents and educators. The library ties into the Task Force's goals because of the educational bene ts it offers; therefore, the Task Force has been an integral partner with the library system. The Southwest Florida Community Foundation has also been a key contributor to the Hendry County Libraries. Late last year, the Foundation contributed $50,000 for improvements at the library, including remodeling the back area to make a computer room equipped with brand new computers and up-to-date software, as well as building a classroom where tutoring, GED classes and ESL classes will be held. Ann Douglas, regional initiatives director of grants and scholarships for the Foundation, applauded Barrett and her work for the libraries during the ceremony. "Ava Barrett wanted the libraries to be a community hub, not just a place that holds books," said Douglas. City Manager Al Perry also praised Barrett for her dedication to her job, saying her passion for making Hendry County Libraries the best they can be is "contagious." Barrett said she was honored for such an occasion and said she didn't expect when she took over as director early last year that it would be such an exciting ride. Although the library system has received signi cant grants over the past year, Barrett is imploring the public to contribute towards the library's book fund, which is contingent upon the city's general fund. Unfortunately, this year there is barely any money to purchase books for the library. Barrett urges everyone to contribute a mere $10 toward the fund. The Clewiston Public Library is located at 120 W Osceola Avenue and their phone number is 863-983-1493. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 TAX IMPACT OF VALUE ADJUSTMENT BOARD 18 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 6, 2014 HC Libraries Receive over $30k for ProgramsMoney raised at December’s Captain Hendry Dinner presented to Hendry County Libraries PHOTO/ MELISSA BELTZOf cials gathered at the Clewiston Public Library on Jan. 30 as Library Director Ava Barrett was presented with a $35,850 check. The 22-year-old Palmdale resident was talking about one of her rst experiences being a GAL a Guardian ad Litem. Bailey was instrumental in getting needed resources for a six-year-old girl currently in foster care. The child’s grandmother calls Bailey from time to time with questions, and recently commented, “I’m so glad I have you. I love that you try.” Executive Director Alan Abramowitz states, “I clearly remember the rst two children I represented as a volunteer Guardian ad Litem, Gerald and Candice, back in 1986. They needed a voice someone to speak for them in court. It was an awesome responsibility and challenge. But, my gifts of time and energy led to one of the most rewarding experiences I could have as an advocate and as a human being. Today, in Florida, too many abused and neglected children will go to court with no one there to stand up for them, to be their voice. You can change that.” Between Hendry and Glades counties, there are approximately 116 children that need volunteer GALs, but only 42 are covered. Shawna Prope, the volunteer supervisor for the GAL program, based in LaBelle, says she desperately needs 40 additional volunteers to represent these children and ensure that all decisions made are in the child’s best interest. Training is provided and volunteers determine their own case load. Anyone interested in volunteering can attend an orientation on Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. at the Guardian ad Litem of ce in LaBelle, located at 25 E. Hickpochee Ave. on the third oor of the courthouse. The phone number to reserve a seat is 863-674-4190. Volunteers can change a child’s life forever and, in the process, change theirs for the better.
