BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston News“If the weather gets right, it could be the perfect storm like it was in 2011 when they broke all the records,” said bassshing pro Drew Benton. Benton hails from Panama City, Fla., and like the other 179 bassshing pros who will be making their way to Clewiston, Benton is gearing up for the 19th season of the Walmart FLW Tour. Named for the founder of the Ranger Boats brand, Forrest L. It’s that time of year again: New Year’s resolutions may be waning, but the cooler winter temperatures mean runners and walkers can suit up, step outside and not drop from heat stroke. After the accolades were awarded, commissioners voted to reappoint Barbara Edmonds and Scott Jones to the Community Redevelopment Advisory Committee. With the commissioners’ motion to approve their reappointment, both Edmonds and Jones will serve another two-year term. Airglades Postponed Commissioners were scheduled to discuss the Force Main Project for Airglades Airport at Monday’s meeting, but the agenda item was pulled due to the county needing to discuss the project at their meeting scheduled for Jan. 28. The Force Main Project, if approved, would connect the city of Clewiston’s sewer line with Airglades Airport, allowing for the expansion of the small hub. The county is interested in pursuing the project as a joint venture with the city, to share the costs of the engineering plans that need to be completed before any grants can be applied for. has high hopes for this year’s competition. Nelson is a member of the Clewiston Rotary Club and sits on the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. Both organizations sponsor and coordinate the race, but it was the Rotary Club’s vision of bringing a 5k race to Clewiston several years ago that initiated the process. The result is the Love the Lake 5k/10k, which has successfully raised muchneeded funds for worthy causes, while offering a healthy medium for Hendry County residents to reunite with the massive lake that makes up their backyards. Love the Lake is a unique race because of its location, said Nelson. The race is held on the pedestrian path that circles the lake and offers a beautiful view of the rim canal. “It’s more picturesque than other races,” said Nelson, adding that the race not only showcases the lake in an unconventional way, it brings people together from all over South Florida. This year, to attract even more people to the lake, Love the Lake is offering a half-marathon in addition to the 5k and 10k already offered. County Commissioner Karson Turner was the initial advocate of the half-marathon, said Nelson, with the Tourism and Development Council (TDC) also jumping on board. “The TDC likes the idea of the half-marathon because it brings more people from the coast,” said Nelson. Having a professional company -Split Second Timing -at the nish line to capture each individual’s nishing time is also an attractive feature for out-of-towners (and in-towners for that matter) who participate in races often. This year’s race also correlates with another exciting Hendry County event: the Hendry County Fair. Love the Lake is being held the same day the Hendry County Fair opens, on Saturday, Feb. 15, and everyone who participates in the race will be given free admission into the fair. The fair features carnival-style games, rides and delicious fare, and would be a great way to unwind after running the race. “What’s better than running a 5k and eating funnel cake?” joked Nelson. And if free admission into the fair weren’t enough, race participants also receive a complimentary pancake breakfast at Roland and Mary Ann Martin’s Marina after the race, a free t-shirt and free goodie bags. Kids can also participate in the race during the “Kiddie Dash” -a short sprint for kids ages 10 and younger. All kids who run in the Kiddie Dash will also receive a free t-shirt, goodie bag and a gold medal. Nelson hopes to see at least 250 participants in this year’s race. The rst year saw 273 runners, while the second year only saw about 189. Nelson said the foggy weather was a big factor in last year’s drop in runners. Nelson is hoping for better weather this year. Though the weather is always unpredictable, February’s typically mild temperatures were a major reason why the Rotary Club chose to hold the race during this time of year. Another reason was because February is dubbed Heart Health month, and running is a great way to keep on top of heart health. And the fact that February is also the month of love made it only natural to name the race, “Love the Lake.” The rst year’s race, held in 2011, saw another reason to associate the race with love and heart health: the bene ciary of the race’s proceeds was then-Clewiston High School senior Darius Redd. That year, the former football player was in need of a heart transplant and Love the Lake helped raise nearly $2,000 towards his procedure. Redd attended the 2012 race after undergoing a successful heart transplant, and watched as the proceeds were donated to Active Citizens for Children. This year, the proceeds will be divvied up between the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce; both organizations will decide where to donate their portion of the money. Unlike previous years, said Nelson, there was not a cause or organization that stood out as being the obvious bene ciary for the race’s proceeds. According to Nelson, the Rotary Club will most likely use the proceeds toward high school scholarships, while the Chamber of Commerce will be using the money to expand their Sugarland Tours. The Love the Lake 5k/10k will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15. Race-day registration opens at 5:45 a.m. at Roland and Mary Ann Martin’s Marina, and the half-marathon kicks off the race at 7 a.m. A detailed race schedule, race routes and entry forms can be found at the Love the Lake website: www.lovethelake5k10k.com. Love the Lake is still looking for potential sponsors, including mile marker sponsors. Wisdom Comes With AgeBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI woke up this morning one year older. Some days I handle it better than others. All my life, I’ve been taught to respect my elders. Now I am one. I’m reminded of what one friend shared with me, “You know you are getting older when you try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks only to nd you aren’t wearing any.” Growing older. Aging. We can laugh about it, make jokes about it, and groan about it, but we can’t stop it. So, what do we do with birthdays? As much as we might like to avoid them, we can’t. So why not celebrate them? Birthdays are good for us. The more we have, the longer we live. According to the Scriptures, “advanced years should teach wisdom,” so here is some of mine. Pocket the ones you nd of value, toss those you don’t. A positive mind-set can make your day. It’s better to set your mind so that when you wake up you can say, “Good morning, Lord,” and not, “Good Lord, it’s morning.” Words can hurt people more than sticks and stones. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. But when you forget, never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. There would be fewer problems with children if they had to chop wood to keep the television set going. Teenagers will do dumb things. Whoever came up with the phrase to “sleep like a baby” probably didn’t have one. Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. More often than not, it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese. The easy way is not always the best way; and, often, the harder it is to do something, the stronger it makes you. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. To say no to someone is not wrong. We could learn a lot from crayons -some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull and some have weird names, but they all have to live in the same box. There is truth and value to what Robert Fulghum shared in “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten.” Think what a better world it would be if everyone had cookies and milk at about three o’clock every afternoon, then laid down with their blankies for a nap. Or if all governments and people had a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own messes. And it is still true, no matter how many birthdays we’ve had, when we go out into the world, it’s best to hold hands and stick together. Life is not fair, but God is good. Together, we can all make it through with this truth.Defending Your FaithCLEWISTON — How can an individual defend his faith in a world that casts doubt? LOWEST PRICE EVERYDAY! 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 RELIGION NEWS AND INFORMATION John Hicks BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Crested Caracara is a tropical version of a vulture. Its range in the United States is normally only in Arizona, Texas and Florida. The subspecies known as Audubon’s Crested Caracara is present year-round in Florida. There are only about 250 pairs of this federally threatened subspecies nesting in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The Crested Caracara is a large, long-legged tropical falcon about the size of an Osprey. It is often referred to as the Mexican Eagle. It has a black cap, black body and a white tail with a wide, black tip. The bare skin on its face is bright orange-red when it is at rest, preening or engaged in other non-aggressive behaviors. When threatened, the facial skin changes to a pumpkin color and, nally, to a pale yellow. The crest at the end of the Caracara’s cap lays at when it is comfortable and not threatened, but it will raise its crest when it feels threatened, frightened or is on alert. This bird is mostly silent. During courtship, or in the early morning or evening, it may throw its head back until it almost touches its shoulders and make a high, crackling sound that resembles its Brazilian name. Caracara are often reported in dry or wet prairie areas with scattered cabbage palms, or are seen eating carrion along roadways in the counties surrounding Lake Okeechobee. Their diet includes carrions, insects, mammals and invertebrates, including sh, snakes, turtles, birds and mammals. Crested Caracaras are often reported along County Road 833 in Hendry County and County Road 78 in Glades County. Caracara nest as early as September, with the height of their nesting season in January or February. Adult Caracaras are territorial and form persistent pair bonds. Their bulky nest of vines and sticks is usually built in a cabbage palm. The female lays one to four white or buffy colored eggs that are incubated for 32 to 33 days. The young remain in the nest for approximately eight weeks. These birds reach sexual maturity when they are three to four years old. Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers often see Caracara and other bird species at STA-5 in south Hendry County. Last week, 93 species were observed, including Caracara. Anyone interested in participating in the free driving trips at STA-5 on Feb. 1, 15, 16 or 17 should e-mail Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863-6740695 or 863-517-0202. anglers and set out on Lake Okeechobee beginning Feb. 6. The four-day tournament carries a $100,000 top prize for pros and a $20,000 top prize for co-anglers. Professional sherman shing out of a Ranger boat can add an extra $25,000 to their prize, while co-anglers can add an extra $5,000 to theirs. "There's endless opportunities on Lake Okeechobee right now," said Benton, who won the Walmart FLW Tour in 2013. "It's been too cold and the major spawn hasn't happened yet. It all depends on the weather, but we could easily see a four-day total of 100 pounds again." The weather has an especially large impact on the sh in Lake Okeechobee. Bass-pro J.T. Kenney, of Palm Bay, Fla., weighed in on how the weather leading up to the tournament could affect its outcome. "Even though it really screws up shing, it takes these cold fronts to trigger those big giant schools of sh that live out on the main lake -and are uncatchable -to move into the grassy areas to spawn," said Kenney. "That's the time of year when we can see the big 30-pound stringers. I really believe that if we hit a warming trend before the tour event, it's going to be lights out." With only one week until the tournament kicks off from Roland and Mary Ann Martin's Marina, and the weather forecast predicting hotter temperatures in the next few days, anglers could be warming up to great outcome for FLW 2014. Ramon Iglesias, general manager at Roland and Mary Ann Martin's Marina, has been helping to bring the FLW Tour to Clewiston for several years. Iglesias said the tour has a big impact on the entire community. Based on a 2009 study, the approximate economic impact of the tour on the city of Clewiston is $1.55 million. The 360 sherman who will be traveling to Clewiston for the tour, often weeks in advance, spend money on food, fuel and accommodations, said Iglesias. Not to mention the FLW lm crew, media outlets, marketing teams, and any family members who accompany them -the nancial impact of everyone involved with the tour adds up. Everyone needs to eat, sleep and fuel up. Visitors will be spending money at area restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores and hotels. The gas stations also prosper because the sherman need to fuel up both their boats and the trucks that haul them. In fact, the study suggested that boaters spend roughly $120 per tour day on gasoline alone. Iglesias also reiterated the fact that the dollars spent in the area during the tour, stay in the area. "This is a big thing for our community," said Iglesias. The FLW Tour also features two expos to be held in the Walmart parking lot on Feb. 8 and 9 before the sherman weigh in at 4 p.m. Families can come out and experience Ranger boat simulations and interactive games, while meeting with professional anglers and getting freebees from the tour's sponsors, including Chevrolet, Dunkin' Donuts, Kellog's, Snickers, and of course, Ranger boats. The expos begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9. Attendees will also be treated to a free concert by country music singer Josh Thompson on Feb. 9 at 3 p.m., before the nal weigh-in. These expos are an example of the family friendly atmosphere of the FLW Tour. That family friendly atmosphere is one reason by Billy DeHart chose to compete in this year's tour. DeHart, who travelled to Clewiston from the San Francisco Bay Area to compete for the second time in the FLW series, has been shing in tournaments since 1993. The FLW Tour, he said, is family oriented and welcoming to newcomers in the shing arena. "[FLW] is open to all," said DeHart, "You don't have to qualify and it's open to everyone, unlike other organizations." DeHart will join the other 359 anglers and coanglers on Feb. 6 at 7 a.m., when the boats take off in a shotgun start from Roland and Mary Ann Martin's Marina. Below is a schedule of the 2014 FLW Tour: Thursday, Feb. 6 Takeoff at Roland and Mary Ann Martin's Marina, 7:30 a.m. Weigh-in at Roland and Mary Ann Mar tin's Marina, 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 Takeoff at Roland and Mary Ann Martin's Marina, 7:30 a.m. Weigh-in at Roland and Mary Ann Mar tin's Marina, 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 Takeoff at Clewiston Boat Basin, 7:30 a.m. FLW Expo at Walmart, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Weigh-in at Walmart, 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 Takeoff at Clewiston Boat Basin, 7:30 a.m. FLW Expo at Walmart, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Josh Thompson concert at Walmart, 3 p.m. Weigh-in at Walmart, 4 p.m. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 8 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 FLWContinued From Page 1 The male celebrity cake auction will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the LaBelle Rodeo Grounds at 6 p.m. Please come out and help raise money for the Pro Steadman 4-H Scholarship Fund. She believed in the 4-H organization and seeing it reach its full potential of bringing families together and keeping members interested in worthwhile projects. She was diagnosed with ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) in May of 1988. Throughout her struggle with the disease, she maintained her interest and involvement in youth programs as much as she physically could. The loan would provide the funds needed to pay for the engineering plans, and if the city approves the county’s request, the city would share the cost of the loan with the county.Paving ProjectsAn update provided by Public Works Director Sean Schef er on the city’s future paving projects led to a discussion about road improvements on W.C. Owen, Francisco and Sonora avenues. Commissioner Mali Gardner commented on the county’s ve-year paving plan -which includes paving county-owned Sonora Avenue -saying she would like to see the county include W.C. Owen and Francisco Avenue in their plan. Both roads, she said, are the most-traveled roads in Clewiston and both are in terrible condition. Mayor Phillip Roland offered to take the issue up with the county and City Manager Al Perry said he would draft a formal request to give to the Mayor to present. Change in Lock ScheduleAt a previous meeting, Mayor Roland asked City Engineer Tommy Perry to discuss changing the lock schedule at the Clewiston locks. Currently, boaters are required to “lock through” when the lake reaches 15.5 feet -a condition that Mayor Roland says unnecessarily deters boaters from using the Clewiston locks. Mayor Roland would like to see the “lock through” point at 16 feet; Perry said he would be meeting with the appropriate parties to discuss the possible changes in the schedule within the next couple of weeks. If the schedule is changed to begin “lock through” operations at 16 feet, boaters would still be required to “lock through” at night at 15.5 feet. Mayor Roland cited the “wind tide” phenomenon as the necessitating factor. At night, he said, a wind tide can cause the lake to swell over two feet, taking a 16-foot lake to an 18-foot or higher lake within hours.Commissioner ResignsBefore the meeting adjourned, Commissioner Rick Miller announced that he would be resigning from the city commission effective immediately. Commissioner Miller has served on the commission for eight years. He and his family are moving to Vero Beach, and due to the city’s charter, he cannot serve as commissioner living in Vero Beach. The regular election to ll Commissioner Miller’s vacant seat will be held in November; in the meantime, commissioners will appoint an interim commissioner to ll the void. Commissioner James Pittman thanked Commissioner Miller “for being a friend,” and Commissioner Julio Rodriguez joked that if Commissioner Miller ever wanted good Cuban cuisine, he is welcome to stop by Commissioner Rodriguez’s restaurant. With only ve returning varsity players from the 2012/13 season, a new roster full of last year's JV players and a handful of freshmen, no one could have anticipated the outcome of the Lady Tigers' 2013/14 season. The Lady Tigers Soccer Team nished their regular season with a record of 17-3. They scored 91 goals, allowed 24 goals and had nine shutouts. The team's leadership came from their two senior captains, Jessica Radcliffe and Rachel Hoover. Jessica Radcliffe played all four years of high school and was a three-year varsity player. She battled her way back from an ACL tear and surgery to not only play, but lead her teams during her senior year of cross country, soccer and now track. Rachel Hoover played varsity soccer for two years while completing all of her high school credits as a junior and being fully immersed in dual enrollment classes at Palm Beach State College, as she continues to work towards completing her associate's degree near graduation. Hoover also opened her team's eyes to the importance of giving back, as she led the team in collecting unused jerseys and soccer shirts to send to a children's orphanage in Mozambique, Africa. There is no doubt these two ladies led their team by example, on and off the eld. The underclassmen teamed up with their seniors to nish out their best season yet. The rest of the team was a combination of youth, ranging from juniors Megan Blount, Rachel Morrell, Daisy Villegas, and Jordan Pencarinha, to sophomores Marissa Espino, Abigail Nunez, Kaci Pittman, Crystal Vasquez and Abigail Villareal, and freshmen Kelsey Allison, Carley Morrell, Ashley Roth and Alexis Rubio. Their keeper, Ashley Roth, started every game and recorded nine shutouts for her rst varsity season. Their freshman forward, Kelsey Allison, was the teams all-time leading goal scorer, with 43 goals. Kaci Pittman also helped offensively, scoring 18 goals after being forced to sit out her freshmen year with a fractured shin and foot. Along with the top goal scorers on the team, 13 girls contributed to the team's 91 goals this season. Although the Lady Tigers Soccer Team's regular season was a success, with a record of 17-3, they fell short of extending their season to regional play. Their record was 8-2 in their district, seeded #2 behind Bishop Verot. The ladies hoped to avenge those two losses from Verot in the district nal game. Unfortunately, their last game was against #3 seed Oasis High School in the district semi- nal match. The games regulation time ended with a tie of 1-1 after 80 minutes of play. The ladies played two 10-minute rounds of sudden death overtime, and then to a penalty kick shoot-out. One after another, the ve chosen ladies took their turn on the penalty line but couldn't seem to nd the net. Oasis took the win and the Lady Tigers watched the unexpected success of their regular season end abruptly at the penalty line. A winning season is a great accomplishment and can be easily measured, but true success in a team sport is knowing that the teammates selflessly play for one another and play every game as if it were their last. If this group of underclassmen can combine these characteristics, the leadership examples of their seniors and learn from their mistakes this season, their future success will be no surprise. There will be no turning back in the years to come for the Lady Tiger's Soccer Team. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 14 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 No Turning Back for the Lady Tigers Soccer Team SUBMITTED PHOTOClewiston High School’s Lady Tigers Soccer Team.
