BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston News“I’ve never had a parent say, ‘No, I don’t want my kid to learn this,’” said Robbie Rush of the First Tee Junior Golf Program, a youth development program aimed at teaching kids life skills while they learn the game of golf. Rush is the new golf professional at the Clewiston Golf Course, and after just three weeks on the job, Rush is already looking for ways to boost attendance and playtime at the city’s course. The First Tee Program (FTP), a national junior golf organization that helps “prepare children for success in high school, college, and life,” is currently being taught to school-aged children in Belle Glade. BY JOSE ROMERO Special to e Clewiston NewsThere was an air of tension as the stadium at Cocoa High School lled up. Fans weren’t sure how this game would turn out. There was only one thing for certain: this game would be nothing like the past two years the Clewiston Tigers faced off against Cocoa High’s Tigers. Clewiston had the ball rst this game and recovered from a disadvantageous start. Lenorris Gaines recovered the kick and ended up three yards from Cocoa’s goal line. Derry West forced his way past Cocoa’s defense, gaining 15 yards. Derrick Jackson took over from there, picking off a spectacular pass from Davis Witt, good for 61 yards. After a penalty, Clewiston was nine yards from a touchdown. West again muscled his way past Cocoa, but it was Jackson who would make it to the end zone, catching a ve-yard pass from Witt. After Brandon Torres delivered on the point after touchdown (PAT), Clewiston was in the lead, 7-0. As Clewiston players very well know, Cocoa’s players are no pushovers. Orvell Howard, Chairman Karson Turner, Chairman Hendry County Local Planning Agency Hendry County Board of County Commissioners 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 28, 2013 On Thanksgiving Day, 2013BY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ S ai nt M a rt i n s Chu r chI have been with people when good news has arrived: when children were lost but were found safe, when the diagnosis came back negative and no life-threatening illness was found, when someone got the job out of all of the applicants who applied for it, when someone was found innocent ... and on and on. Following the good news was that instinct to say, “Thank God!” and we shared in a prayer that was much different than our previous prayers uttered during moments of fear and concern. This tendency, this instinct follows when there is a realization that things beyond our control, things we feared, no longer need to be feared. I know in my own life, saying “Thank God!” when I become aware that some force, some intervention in this world has worked for me; that somehow God was present and it made all of the difference. I think thanks-giving may be a particularly unique human response. We are a species capable of realizing all that could have gone wrong didn’t go wrong, and we feel compelled to do something in return for the people, situations, God, who were working on our side to see that things turned out all right. That something is all we have to offer at times; our heartfelt appreciation that is acknowledged when we have little or nothing else to offer. It is Jesus who knows He is about to be betrayed, but takes bread and wine ... and gives thanks ... and predicts what will happen to Him (Matthew 26:21ff, Mark 14:17ff, cf. 1 Corinthians 11:23ff). Thanksgiving comes when there is that beginning of worship: we have little to offer to God, it’s all His anyway and He can do with it as He wills. At least, though, we can be thankful, and in our response, show gratitude for what He has shared with us. The acknowledgement before those to whom we are grateful has come spontaneously as we grow in awareness of the bene ts we have received, the blessings and mercy given, the getting better than desired or deserved. Thanksgiving can be an antidote to envy, jealousy, arrogance; the realization that we didn’t earn or deserve or merit but it came anyway. A great Christian writer, Evelyn Underhill, says worship begins when we look around and realize we didn’t do it ourselves and can only respond with adoration and thanksgiving to the One who made it all and makes it all possible. The next step is always doing our part to make someone else a bit more thankful -one of God’s creatures -and taking from our blessings to share with them. I have my favorites: those who may have “fallen through the cracks” and whose needs are not known, or someone who is ineligible for help from institutional charities but are nevertheless in need. Someone pointed out to me something about Church services that he observed. He said our prayers of asking for others or for ourselves are always much longer and a much more prominent part of worship services than our prayers of thanksgiving, or just adoring God for being God. Now comes the day when we can step back and do something a bit more balanced: setting aside time for thanksgiving and remembering before God how fortunate and blessed we really are. I have thought often of those Pilgrims who came to America’s shores in boats that weren’t guaranteed to make it, who gave up their homes and the civilization they knew to face the hardships of life living off the land, surrounded by a culture unknown to them and then ... giving thanks. Can we, can I do any less, with our relative abundance and relative security in comparison to what they faced? Then, I look at what they accomplished and what all of our ancestors did: beginning with their thankfulness and being blessed as they were blessed. It crossed my mind that our many blessings are God’s way of saying, “You’re welcome!” I’ve said that from time to time: it comes after knowing I did something for someone and they appreciated it. Maybe God feels that way too. If you would like to contact Rev. Thomas about this column or have an idea for one, please send an e-mail to fatherthomas@saintmartins-clewiston.org.Community Thanksgiving DinnerCLEWISTON — First United Methodist Church of Clewiston is hosting its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 28, beginning at 12 p.m. Come and enjoy a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner with all of the trimmings. BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsLoud cracks cut through the night air as a group of murmuring voices collects under a brightly lit pavilion on Five-Acre Field. The cracks cease and the group gathers tightly together. An oversized sheet of paper makes its way to the center of the huddled mass. The paper is riddled with bullet holes -dozens of tiny specks sprinkled on the white sheet, but the group searches only for one. Closest to the center, inside a small ring drawn precisely on the sheet, a narrow stream of light shines through a single bullet hole. “That’s the winner,” says a male’s voice. A frozen turkey appears from behind the crowd and glides effortlessly over the heads of the on-lookers and into the hands of a young boy, who admires his prize and hurries off to show his friends. The Elks Lodge Turkey Shoot, held Nov. 18 through 22, kicked off the 2013 holiday season, just in time for Thursday’s Thanksgiving feast. The 18-year tradition helps raise money for the Clewiston Elks Lodge and is “good family fun,” according to Ashley Haggins, a volunteer for the event. “It’s a fun way to teach gun safety to kids,” said Haggins, as she crosses off names from a list in front of her -names of individuals who have signed up to try their luck in the shoot. A $3 donation guarantees a spot and a chance to win a turkey, while a $5 donation guarantees a spot and a chance to win a ham. The shooters in each heat are called one by one to a platform and are given several chances to get as close as possible to the center of one of 12 targets located about 100 yards away from the platform. After the last shooter in the heat takes his turn, the targets are collected and laid out on a table under the lighted pavilion. The winner is chosen based on who was able to shoot as close to the center of the target as possible. The winner’s initial donation determines which bird will appear from the cooler and land in the winner’s hands. Greg Westbury is a member of the Elks Lodge and started the Turkey Shoot about 18 years ago. “We’ve been doing it for about 18 years and we never raised the prices [of donations],” said Westbury, as he sat and watched the show from the back of a pickup truck. Those donations go towards improving the Elks Lodge and funding the many programs and scholarships it puts on throughout the year. Westbury said some of the money from this year’s shoot may go towards restoring the lodge -to “take it out of the 1960s.” Though Westbury and the other original coordinators of the Turkey Shoot were present at the event, they have since passed on the responsibility to a new generation. This year’s shoot was run by members of the Big Lake Gun Club and Westbury said the boys were doing “an awesome job.” “When you’ve done something for 18 years you think you’re going to miss it, but I think it’s in good hands,” said Westbury. One of those hands belonged to Jesse Thompson, a member of the Big Lake Gun Club and rst-year volunteer at the Turkey Shoot. On the second-to-last night of the shoot, Thompson said his favorite part of the experience was kids’ night, held on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Though kids were allowed to shoot on any night of the veday event, Tuesday was reserved just for them. “Kids’ night was the most hectic. All the kids were anxious and wanting to shoot, but it was fun to teach them,” said Thompson, who recalled the most memorable child of the night: a two-year-old boy who was eager to shoot. “There was a little boy about two years old shooting. Pretty much all the work was done for him ... but some kids were really small and didn’t need any help at all,” said Thompson. As of Thursday night, over 50 turkeys had already been won, a “conservative” estimate, according to Thompson -and that number did not include hams. With over 50 turkeys won and one night still to go, the 2013 Turkey Shoot proved, once again, to be a fun, family event and an interesting alternative to securing that holiday turkey or ham -so long as one has good aim and a steady hand. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 28, 2013 Guns, Turkeys and HamsElks Turkey Shoot supplies holiday birds to steady-handed participants PHOTO/ MELISSA BELTZJason Williams (left) steadies Joseph Claro’s (right) gun, while the eight-year-old takes aim at one of the targets at the Annual Elks Lodge Turkey Shoot on Nov. 21.

Orvell Howard, Chairman Karson Turner, Chairman Hendry County Local Planning Agency Hendry County Board of County Commissioners 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 28, 2013 BY MARGARET ENGLAND H e ndr y G l a d es A u d ubo nThe Great Blue Heron is the tallest North American heron. This majestic longlegged bird stands three to 4.5 feet tall with a wingspan of 5.5 to 6.6 feet. These herons live and breed in coastal and inland Florida. Reports of Great Blue Herons building nests or demonstrating other con rmed breeding behaviors are needed for the Breeding Bird Atlas II (BBAII) Project, which ends in 2016. During the rst surveys 25 years ago, there were very few breeding reports in inland Florida and only a few con rmed nesting reports have been submitted during the current 2011/16 BBA II surveys. This species' nesting season usually lasts from October to May. Great Blue Herons have blue-gray back wings and belly. They have a wide, black strip over their eye and a white crown and face. In ight, they curl their neck in an "S" shape. Immature birds have a black cap and lack the black plume extending from the eye. Their back and upper wings are brownish-gray. On the breeding grounds, adults will greet their partner with squawking "roh-roh-rohs;" other calls include clucking or screaming sounds. Chicks will call "tik-tik-tik" within minutes of hatching. Great Blue Herons are often seen foraging along coastal shorelines, marshes, sloughs, lakes, rivers and backyard ponds, but they will also hunt in grasslands and agricultural elds. These herons forage day or night by wading slowly or standing still while stalking prey. They will quickly thrust their neck and head to stab sh, snakes, insects, small mammals or other birds with their strong bills. These colonial nesters are known for their courtship and pair-bonding displays, which include greetings, stick transfers and nest relief ceremonies. The male chooses the nest site and then attracts a mate. He collects most of the nest material, which he presents to the female who weaves a saucer-shaped nest cup lined with pine needles, moss, reeds, leaves or small twigs. Nest-building can take from three days to two weeks. When the nest is completed, the female will lay three to four pale-blue eggs, which are incubated by both adults for 27 to 29 days. The chicks are covered in pale-gray down. The nestlings are capable of ight at about 60 days of age. The community is invited to join HendryGlades Audubon volunteers for free birding trips to Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA-5), located 20 miles south of Clewiston on Nov. 30. Photographers, groups and families are welcome to participate in the escorted trips. with everything they had. After several failed plays, Cocoa’s Tigers were forced to punt, giving Clewiston another shot at a touchdown -a shot that was short-lived. Cocoa’s Brandon Phillips intercepted a pass from Witt almost immediately following the turnover, surprising even himself. He was taken down on Cocoa’s 34-yard line. Clewiston’s defense didn’t have as much luck as before. Their defense couldn’t keep Cocoa back, and with four minutes left in the quarter, Cocoa’s Lorrenzo Pratt made a touchdown. The PAT was successful, evening the score. From there, the teams were in a sort of stalemate for the remainder of the rst quarter, and much of the second quarter, as well. As soon as the Cocoa defense picked up, Clewiston’s offense would play harder, and vice-versa. They both were out to prove themselves that night. Just as the rst half was winding down, Clewiston came out on top. Despite some roadblocks along the way in the form of pass interferences, false starts and the like, Derry West made the nine yards necessary to score, with 4:13 left in the half. The PAT was successful, once again putting Clewiston in the lead, 14-7. Cocoa, however, did not take long to respond. Their offense moved single-mindedly toward the end zone, overwhelming Clewiston’s defense at times. With two minutes left in the half, Chauncey Gardner scored after catching a 42-yard pass. After another successful PAT, the score was again even, this time 14-14. Cocoa came out swinging in the second half. Just as soon as it began, Bruce Judson rushed for 70 yards, slipping past Clewiston’s defense, and scoring another touchdown for Cocoa. After the PAT, Cocoa was in the lead, 21-14. Cocoa didn’t let up for the rest of the third quarter. After two more touchdowns on their end, and another for Clewiston -courtesy of Lenorris Gaines’ capture of an 80-yard pass -Cocoa’s players sent out a strong and clear message: They weren’t giving this 35-21 lead up any time soon. As the fourth quarter began, Clewiston’s players let it be known that they would go all out while trying to strip Cocoa of their lead. Not even two minutes into the quarter, Gaines recovered a fumble and sped off to the end zone, scoring another touchdown for Clewiston. After another successful PAT, the Tigers seemed to be catching up, with a score of 35-28. Cocoa wasn’t going to take that lying down, however, and inched towards the end zone. Despite all the resistance Cocoa faced in the form of Clewiston’s defense, Bruce Judson ran the single yard needed to score with 4:33 left in the game. Clewiston tenaciously tried to keep up with Cocoa. Angelo Tolbert recovered the kick after the touchdown, rushing for 90 yards to score. The PAT was good, leaving the score 42-35. This back-and-forth scoring ended with Cocoa’s nal touchdown of the night. With 2:28 left in the game, Judson ran for another touchdown, this time for 73 yards. Clewiston again moved quickly towards the end zone, but was overwhelmed ve yards from the end zone. Incomplete passes and no yardage gains in rushing hurt them deeply. Once the ball turned over, it was too late for a recovery. As the game ended, the nal score was 49-35. John Wilkinson, head coach for Cocoa, had nothing but good things to say about Clewiston’s performance that night. “Pete’s been doing the best coaching job for them. They’re de nitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. He should be very proud. It’s unbelievable how far they’ve come, and it’s because of the coaches.” Addressing his team, Pete Walker said, “I hurt for you, but I love you and I’m proud of you all. We’re going to hurt for a bit, but then we’re going back to work. ... This is a team that’s had their way with us the past couple years. We showed them that it’s not going to be like that anymore. They wanted a war, and that’s what we gave them out there tonight. Unfortunately, someone had to lose, and it was us tonight.” Walker also added, “I’m proud of the fans, coaches and school. Proud of them for supporting us all season. We can’t thank them enough.” MHHS Project GraduationFor sale: sliced pork dinners, including green beans, macaroni and cheese and a roll. The Clewiston High School Tiger Wrestling team competed in the rst tournament of the year as they traveled to Palmetto Ridge High School who hosted the second annual Chase Life Invitational Wrestling tournament. The tigers competed with only 8 wrestler out of a full 14 man lineup, partly due to some injuries and sickness sustained throughout the week that crippled the lineup and a handful of wrestlers still competing in football. Overall the team's performance was good, the tournament itself is considered one of the toughest in the state, especially to kick off the wrestling season. "We saw state championship teams, state ranked teams and individual ranked wrestlers... It was no cakewalk that's for sure, making it to the second day is an accomplishment itself and we felt our boys were well prepared for this" stated the coaches. Three wrestlers made it to the second day of competition, Cristian Montes, Oscar Matamoros and Zeke Bryant. Matthew Johnson and Jason Preston recorded impressive victories throughout the preliminary rounds and rst year wrestlers Janet Reyes, Bradley Bellew and Wilford McLeod competed tough through the rst day. "What we as coaches take away from this tournament is the tough way our kids competed, you can't coach or teach effort, and we were all very impressed especially with the younger guys on the team. On the other hand, it helps us see what we need to work on and we'll be doing just that as we prepare for our next meet in two weeks" said the coaches. The Tigers will be back in action December 7, as they will travel to Avon Park to compete in the 12 team dual meet tournament. In the article titled "Welcome to the Club," which ran on the front page of the Nov. 21 edition of The Clewiston News, we reported that Roland and Mary Ann Martin Marina was awarded a $1.55 million grant. The grant awarded was actually for $35,000 and will be used toward the FLW Bass Fishing Tournament, which has an estimated $1.55 million impact on the community. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Ridge Insurance 863-382-3119 Policies have exclusions and limitations. Sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce (PBSO), 25 children from several Glades-area schools are shuttled to the Sugar Cane Golf Club in Belle Glade each Tuesday and Thursday. The children line up singlele and are escorted by sheriff’s of ce deputies from the shuttle bus to the golf course. Robbie Rush waits patiently for them at the course with activities planned and lessons to be learned. The children stretch as Rush goes over FTP’s core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, con dence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement. When the children nish stretching, Rush unleashes them onto the course to play, integrating one of more of FTP’s core values into the children’s game. Before the day ends and the kids pile back onto the bus, they break to enjoy a granola bar and bottled water. Rush has been running FTP in Belle Glade for a little over year, after taking the reigns from PBSO deputies. Rush was sought to teach the program one year ago by Jack Barrett, director of development for The First Tee of the Treasure Coast, and his colleague Carl Mistretta, executive director of The First Tee of the Palm Beaches. Barrett said FTP’s success has come from working with PGA golfers, like Rush, who can teach the programs well. Now that Rush is the golf pro at Clewiston’s public course, he is pushing to bring the program to Clewiston, and both Barrett and Mistretta are on board to make it happen. Clewiston’s potential program could look slightly different from that of Belle Glade’s because FTP has two different types of programs. The National School Program (NSIP) is offered to schools willing to participate. NSIP trains a physical education teacher to deliver a “light version” of FTP. Using plastic clubs and tennis balls, students practice the basics of golf while learning the core values, healthy habits and code of conduct of FTP. Clewiston Mayor Phillip Roland, who is also advocating to bring the program to the Clewiston Golf Course, said he rst learned how to play golf as a seventh-grader in school. Shortly afterward, the golf coach pulled him out of class and Mayor Roland was on a bus to Vero Beach to play for the golf team. “I played for the rst time on a nine-hole golf course and shot a 99,” said Mayor Roland, who attributes part of his success to the sport of golf. Barrett explained that the purpose of the NSIP is to bring the game of golf to as many schools as possible, but “the key is nding a P.E. teacher who is willing to do it.” The program costs $3,000 to conduct, which includes training for the teacher, as well as supplies for the kids. The fee, however, is paid for by the FTP and no out-of-pocket costs are associated with the schools who want to participate. The second program type offered is the Outreach Program. This program, Mistretta explained, is for kids who would never get their hands on a golf club without the program; FTP pays for everything and the children’s parents do not write a single check. Not only does FTP pay for the cost of instruction and golf course access fees, they also provide the kids with golf equipment, shirts and hats. Belle Glade operates under the Outreach Program. “The kids are given golf clubs, but they have to earn them. They need to show that they want to play the game,” said Barrett. Kids receive brand new golf shoes, as well, but the funding doesn’t magically appear, said Mistretta. Grant-writing is a large part of FTP’s responsibility. A similar program to Outreach exists, but the children’s parents pay for all the different aspects of the program. The estimated annual program budget is $9,200, which includes the costs of program administration, golf course access fees, coach training, golf equipment and supplies and shirts and hats for a January to May program, summer camps and a September to December program. The program can either be paid for by funding from donations or from the children’s parents, or both. “First Tee is for everyone,” said Mistretta. “It is a life skills organization that just so happened to be founded by a PGA professional.” “We’re trying to build better kids, not better golfers,” added Barrett. “[FTP] gives kids access they normally wouldn’t have.” Barrett told the story of a 17-year-old girl who was chosen to participate in a golf tournament in Pebble Beach. The girl nished 12th and played against some of the biggest names in golf today. “If kids stay in the program, the opportunities that are available to them are unbelievable,” said Barrett. The question now remains: will the First Tee Program be brought to the Clewiston Public Golf Course? Barrett and Mistretta said it would be great idea to hold a free “Awareness Day” at the golf course, where residents can come and “see what the program is all about.” Mistretta said about 95 percent of the people who attend the free day end up signing up for the full program. Though talks about FTP are currently up in the air, both parties seemed eager to bring the program to Clewiston. “I absolutely got where I am today because of this golf course,” said Mayor Roland, referencing Clewiston’s public course. “I walked to this course barefooted. I didn’t get a set of clubs until ninth grade and I used them up until I graduated.” Rush was also excited about the prospect of teaching FTP in Clewiston, and said the most important thing is to create things for the kids in the community. Talks will continue throughout the holiday season, but Rush emphasized to Barrett and Mistretta that he hoped to start something in January 2014. Police of cers obtained video surveillance footage from the store and the academy's owner identi ed Miranda in the tape as the person attempting to cash the check, according to the report. The owner also stated that Miranda, who has worked as a receptionist at Discovery Day for almost four years, would have access to the payroll due to her position. Of cers then spoke with the Stop and Shop employee who cashed the check that day. The employee said she knew Miranda, as Miranda often comes to the store to cash her checks. According to the report, Miranda told the employee that her boss was "busy" and asked Miranda to cash the check on her behalf. The employee stated she "thought nothing of it" and cashed the check. The check was signed by Miranda, according to the convenience store employee who said she witnessed Miranda sign the check. Also written on the back of the check was the academy owner's drivers license number. The academy owner came to the police department on Nov. 15 to report her check stolen, but of cers were unable to contact Miranda until Nov. 18 when she came to the police station at around 9:30 a.m. to speak with of cers. According to the report, as of cers read Miranda her rights and asked to conduct an interview, Miranda informed them she had contacted a lawyer and would not speak without her lawyer present. Though no interview was conducted, of cers arrested Miranda on charges of grand theft and uttering a forged instrument. Elizabeth Garcia, part-owner of Discovery Day Academy, said Miranda's alleged theft and forgery was "disheartening." "[Miranda] was excellent with the other employees and children. She was wonderful at what she did. Working with children was a gift for her," said Garcia. "People make decisions and they have to take responsibility for their actions. ... There must have been some demons in her life that brought her to that position." Garcia also con rmed that Miranda has since been terminated from her position at Discovery Day Academy.
