BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsFor the second year in a row, Florida had the highest Hispanic graduation rate in the country, according to the 2013 Diploma’s Count study released on June 6. The study, released by “Education Week” and the Editorial Projects in Education (EPE) Research Center, examined state and local high school graduation rates for the year 2010, the most recent year for which data are available. The graduation rate of Hispanic students has been rising steadily over the past decade, and Florida saw the most impressive graduation rate for Hispanic students in the country. According to the study, 77.1 percent of Hispanic students graduated high school in 2010 in Florida; the national average was 68.1 percent for the same year. Interestingly, Florida was the only state in the country to graduate more Hispanic students (77.1 percent) than white students (76.4 percent) in 2010. Florida is also ranked seventh in the nation for the graduation rate of African-American students. According to the report, 70.1 percent of AfricanAmerican students graduated in 2010 in Florida, compared to the national average of 61.7 percent. Over the past decade, from 2000 to 2010, Florida has seen an impressive 23-percent increase in the graduation rate of all students, compared to the national average of 7.9 percent, according to the study. Governor Rick Scott responded to the positive news in a statement released by the Florida Department of Education (DOE). “Florida students and teachers worked hard over the past decade to improve academic performance and student achievement to help ensure Are Hispanic Students Better Equipped to Succeed in Florida? BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades Audubon Rock Pigeons are sometimes called Rock Doves, City Pigeons, or Feral Pigeons. They are native to mountainous areas in Eurasia and northern Africa, but have been introduced worldwide with the exception of Antarctica. Egyptian hieroglyphics suggest that pigeons were domesticated more than 5,000 years ago. Records of their introduction in North America date back to the 1600s. These pigeons are larger and plumper than a Mourning Dove and are smaller than an American Crow. They have small heads and short legs. Centuries of domestication have resulted in variations in color ranging from all white to nearly black. Most birds are bluish-gray with two black bands on the wing, a black-tipped tail, and iridescent throat feathers. They have broad pointed wings. Their wing patterns may include two bars, dark spots, or they could be plain. The average lifespan of pigeons is 10 to 15 years. The oldest recorded pigeon lived to be 33 years old. Their song is a rolling series of throaty coos accompanied by strutting, bowing, in ating the throat, and fanning their tail. They make a prolonged cooing sound at the nest when trying to attract a mate. When alarmed, they will utter a short grunting sound and take off with a loud clattering. Pigeons can nd their way home, even if released from distant locations. They can navigate by sensing the earth's magnetic elds or by using cues based on the position of the sun. During World War I and II, they carried messages for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Rock Pigeons are abundant in cities and towns, but can also be found around farms, feedlots, and under highway underpasses. These birds often gather in ocks where they can be seen walking or running on the ground foraging for food. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, grain, and human handouts. They occasionally eat invertebrates. Nesting can occur throughout the year, with a pair raising two or more broods annually. Males usually select the nest site, then sit in place and coo to attract a mate. This site is usually a nook, cranny, or ledge located on a manmade structure. They also nest beneath eaves or overhangs, under bridges, in barns, or in other buildings. They rarely nest in tree cavities. During nest building, the female sits on the nest and builds a platform of straw, stems, and sticks from materials brought to her one at a time by the male. They reuse the nest many times, and eventually, it becomes a sturdy, pot-like mound. The female lays two white eggs, which are incubated by the male from mid-morning to late afternoon. The female incubates the eggs from late afternoon to mid-morning. The eggs hatch in 17 to 19 days. Both parents feed the young squabs "pigeon milk," which is a milky liquid secreted from the lining of the adults' crops. Later, they add seeds stored in their crops to the mixture. The young become independent at 30 to 35 days old. For information about the free trip to STA5 (Stormwater Treatment Area 5) on June 15 or July 20, visit: www.hendrygladesaudubon.org. Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.45/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average, which has not moved in the last week, of $3.64/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 9.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 1.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 6.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 7.8 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. "While the national average has seen little change in the last week, prices in the Great Lakes have skyrocketed. In many cities in that region, new, all-time, record-high prices have been set," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "In areas that have featured skyrocketing gasoline prices amidst stable oil prices, re neries continue to be beset with shutdowns, maintenance, and other problems that have hampered production of gasoline and other products, leading to much higher prices. While these situations are dif cult for motorists to digest, relief is on the way and will likely arrive in a few weeks," DeHaan said. Gas Price Update

THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins Church, ClewistonI remember sitting in a chair, studying, while in graduate school. My daughter was about three at the time. She sat down in her chair across the room from me and picked up one of her storybooks. She sat there for about ten minutes -a relatively long time for a child to look at a book she could not read. At rst, I was amused; she had the book upside down! Then, I was suddenly struck by her behavior -she was copying what I was doing. I realized that I had a very powerful in uence. That was awesome and terrifying. Being a father was much more important than I realized. Being a father was setting examples that were to carry through a lifetime and being copied whether or not I was aware of it. We celebrate Father’s Day this weekend. A father is the bearer of the images that will shape the destinies of those entrusted to his care for a few short years. As I grow, I realize the importance of setting an example; an example that will be imprinted in ways I cannot always imagine, an example that will have an in uence far beyond my lifetime and will affect someone who instinctively looks to me when learning what to do in this life. I have noted recently the TV advertisements that say “Be a father, be a parent,” and am encouraged by their message. One grandfather told me about something he observed: “Children mean time!” Yes, taking the time and being the parent; that’s as sacred a calling as any vocation that we can ful ll here on earth. Part of fatherhood as I have observed it, is establishing a home where trust and security are at its roots. Fathers have a role in the establishment of a warm, safe, and loving environment, which will help to produce children who bear his image in the generations to come. It is no accident that God sent His Son to an earthly home; a home with two chosen models for a young boy to learn about this earthly life. His parents’ response when the boy Jesus was lost at the temple (Luke 2:49ff), and their anxieties about His not being with them, re ect what every parent shares. Fathers worry about their children and make every provision possible to see to their safety and guidance; the one charged with being the protector in the household isn’t always appreciated for his setting limits, but he does it anyway because that’s what he is supposed to do. The image Jesus uses when asked about praying, “Our father...,” -the one who is out there, yours and mine, guiding, protecting, providing, sending examples, having an in uence, being that other Father alongside the earthly parent who is called to emulate and share with the Heavenly one. Today, we face a world full of dif culties and demands, insecurities and problems. Being a father isn’t an easy task, but there isn’t anyone else who can do it quite like the male parent. The male parent has a special contribution to make to those who have come into his world and look to him for guidance. Regularly, our TV news highlights fathers coming home from military service. We see them being greeted at airports by their children, who hug them and say quite visibly, “We missed you!” The bond that is shared and shown in these special moments says it all. Fathers are that important! May we who are fathers show our appreciation and thanksgiving; and on this day, when others remember our role, share our thanksgiving with God for the sacred trust He has given us and the special joy that is ours because of it. It is imperative that other boaters are able to see you in the dark. • It is very helpful to h ave a chart plotter or other navigation device on board when navigating at night. Slow speeds are always better in these conditions and a extra lookout could be invaluable. • Make sure you have all of the required safety equipment on board and always wear your life jacket! • Never drink and boat. more students graduate from high school on time. Thanks to Florida teachers, our students are competing and succeding both nationally and internationally,” said Governor Scott. The study also revealed positive news about the graduation rate in the United States as a whole. According to the study, the national graduation rate for public schools was 74.7 percent for the class of 2010, the highest graduation rate since 1973. Forty-six states showed an increase in graduation rates over the past decade; ten states had double-digit increases, including Florida. Perhaps the most impressive increases were the national graduation rates for Hispanic and African-American students. In just one year, from 2009 to 2010, the national graduation rate for Hispanic students increased by 5.4 percent, while the national graduation rate for African-American students rose 3.3 percent. Between 2000 and 2010, the national graduation rates for Hispanic and African-American students rose 16.3 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively. Over the past decade, the graduation gaps between Hispanic and white students and African-American and white students have “narrowed substantially,” according to the report. During the same time period, however, the gap between Native American and white students has widened slightly. This report bears good news for Florida residents. Dr. Tony Bennett, commissioner of education for DOE, reiterated the good news in a statement released by DOE. “Florida has long been on the forefront of national education reform and we are seeing very positive results of that commitment. We will maintain our dedication and focus to continue reducing the achievement gap among Florida’s students,” said Dr. Bennet, adding, “This by no means indicates that our work is nished. But it is a clear sign that by working together with a clear focus, we can all help ensure that every student has a chance to succeed in college, in a career, and in life.” HispanicContinued From Page 1 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 FREE Parking & FREE Parking & Admission! Clewiston Police investigated the scene; Patel, however, was not satis ed by the police’s investigation. According to Patel, Clewiston Police “came, looked around, and walked out.” Patel also said Clewiston Police have not been in contact since the incident occurred and did not say whether they would investigate the matter further. Lieutenant Michael Rowan, of the Clewiston Police Department, responded to the incident saying the Clewiston Police “processed the scene,” and recovered Mr. Patel’s surveillance video. The case would now be “turned over to the investigations division,” according to Lt. Rowan. Asked whether cases like these were high on the Clewiston Police’s priority list, Lt. Rowan said it “depends on the case load” of the investigations division. “With every case, [the Clewiston Police] will do its due diligence and investigate it properly,” remarked Lt. Rowan.
