Police are reviewing surveillance footage for suspectBY SAVANNAH ROUNDS srounds@newszap.comChaos erupted this morning at 3:19 a.m., when a Walmart employee noticed what appeared to be a hand grenade located on top of a payphone just outside of the store. The Clewiston Police Department and Fire Rescue were dispatched immediately after the employee noti ed management of the suspicious item, with the Palm Beach County Bomb Squad and Special Fire Unit arriving on the scene shortly thereafter. Those who were in the immediate area were evacuated as of cials surrounded the building. "Shutting down Walmart was a safety precaution, because we don't know whether or not a device like that is live," explained the City Fire Marshall, Adam Marquith. Further investigation con rmed that the grenade though real was not active. "It was an old grenade that had been taken out of service," stated Marquith. "There was nothing in the device that would allow it to go off." Despite the inactive grenade, of cials did a secondary search of the building as a safety precaution. However, no other devices were located in the area. "No threats were previously made to Walmart that we know of," said Marquith, who explained that there are currently no suspects in the case. The Clewiston Police Department has taken over the investigation, and is currently in the process of reviewing video surveillance. Inactive Grenade Shuts Down Walmart T, M A B B P M P V. Local Student Meets Florida Governor BY MELISSA BELTZ mbeltz@newszap.comAs the music wound down after Thursday night karaoke at Scotty's Tiki Bar in Clewiston on April 18, ho-hum turned to hubbub when a man stumbled in from the parking lot with bloodied hands, holding a pocket knife. As the man approached the bar, he was apprehended by Tiki Bar security and the knife was taken from him, according to witnesses. Clewiston Police was noti ed immediately. According to police reports, the man, Michael Russel, 61, of Clewiston, approached four people in the parking lot as they were leaving the Tiki Bar and threw a beer bottle at them. When a man from the group, Michael Jude Kurtz, 43, of Clewiston, asked Russel w hy he had thrown the beer bottle, Russel reportedly attacked Kurtz with a folding-style pocket knife, leaving a two-inch laceration on Kurtz's left cheek. Russel then left the parking lot and went back into the bar area, where Season ends amidst 50 percent drop in sugar pricesOn April 26, U.S. Sugar Corporation completed its 82nd annual sugarcane harvest operations, with record sugarcane production on its farms. The Clewiston Sugar Factory nished grinding and liquidating the sugar late Thursday. "We had a record year, production wise, on U.S. Sugar's farms and that should be, and is, a very good thing," said Judy Sanchez, senior director o f corporate communications and public affairs. "Unfortunately, a glut of unnecessary foreign imports on top o f healthy U.S. cane and beet production and unlimited Mexican sugar imports via NAFTA caused a 50 percent drop in sugar prices to the farmer," explained Sanchez. Company-owned and leased sugarcane farms produced more than 5.8 million tons of sugarcane in 2013, surpassing the previous production record of 5.4 million tons set in 1999-2000. Main Street LaBelle, FL 33935 863-675-0761 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 2, 2013 B Y MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonBlack-and-white Warblers are a migratory species that breed from April to June in the northern and eastern United States, Newfoundland and Canada. These birds do not normally breed in Florida. They have an extensive winter range that extends from Florida to Venezuela and Colombia. This species is one of the earliest warblers to arrive and leave their wintering grounds. This small black and white striped warbler is easy to identify. The male has strongly contrasting black-and-white stripes on its head and under parts. It has black wings with two white wingbars, a white eye stripe, and white eyering. The legs, lores, ear patch, and throat are black. The underparts have bold black streaks. The adult female is striped on the crown and under parts with a moderate contrast between black and white. Its cheeks, chin and throat are dull white or gray. The under parts are mostly white, with gray streaks. Juveniles have plumage similar to the adult female. Black-and-white warblers have an unusually long hind toe and claw on each foot, which allows them to move up and down securely in any direction on tree bark. Its song is a series of very high, two–syllable phrases, resembling the sound of a squeaky wheel, “wee-see-wee-see-wee-see”. Their call is a sharp “stick” and their ight call a high hissing “fsss”. During the winter, they are found in a variety of habitats, but they breed in mature and mixed forests. The old name for this species was the “Black-andwhite Creeper,” because they creep along larger branches in search of insects which they pick out of crevices or under the bark with their long thin bill. They also glean from leaves. Their diet consists of caterpillars, adult insects and spiders. For a warbler, they are unusually aggressive and will sometimes attack other bird species. Black-and-white Warblers build their nests on the ground at the base of a tree or stump. This nest is an open cup of dry leaves, grass, bark, and pine needles. It is lined with ne grasses, horsehair, down, or moss. The female lays four to six white eggs, which are speckled with brown and light purple. She incubates the eggs until they hatch in 10 to 12 days. Both adults feed the young. The young birds leave the nest in eight to 12 days. They are unable to y, but use their wings to scurry across the ground. Inland Birding Fun: Black-and-White Warbler (BAWW) PHOTO/ KENNETH COLEBlack and White Warbler

Clewiston Police arrived at the Tiki Bar at approximately 11:30 p.m. and began interviewing both parties. According to reports, Michael Russel was too intoxicated to provide a coherent statement. An employee of the Tiki Bar stated she served Russel two bottles of beer and he paid his tab around 9:30 p.m., two hours before the incident took place. She did not recall seeing Russel between the time he paid his tab and the time he came back into the bar with the knife.Police reports also state they were unable to locate the knife, which Russel allegedly used to stab Kurtz. It was later made known that a friend of Russel’s took the knife from him, after he returned to the bar area, and hid it in a wooden post located a few feet away from the main bar. Russel’s friend stated he wanted to help Russel, but knew the right thing to do would be to turn the knife in to police. He told Tiki Bar employee, Terry Adams, 48, of Clewiston, where the knife was hidden. Adams later contacted the Clewiston Police Department and on Friday, April 19, police retrieved the knife from its location. Tiki Bar manager, Laura Martin, responded to the incident. “[The incident] happened in the parking lot...It was closing time and no one knew [what had happened] until [Russel] came back into the bar and said he cut someone,” explained Martin. Martin also stated, that the incident was handled appropriately by Tiki Bar security, who apprehended Russel until police arrived and called for an ambulance to assist Kurtz. Russel was arrested, April 18, on charges of aggravated battery and is still in police custody. AttackContinued From Page 1

Family And Roots; Personally, Nationally, SpirituallyBY REVEREND SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins Church, ClewistonThe countryside was dotted with old farmhouses in the region where I began my rst ministry. Often in the corners of the grounds, you could see a single-wide or double-wide mobile home, equipped with a swing-set, a wading pool, or a slide in the nearby yard. Other buildings also dotted the property: sheds, a barn, a shop. Directions were usually given in terms of local landmarks: turn left when you see the mailbox with the owers painted on it, where the asphalt road becomes gravel and you can see the yellow house in the distance. People had practical solutions to their lives: x it if it's broken, save discarded things because they may be useful in the future, buy a big pump for the well, not just the smallest one to do the job. On my rst trip to Europe, I looked up my family name in the local phone book and called around. Most people were polite but not interested in meeting me. One young man spoke of hearing from his grandfather about an uncle, who went to the U.S. The young man was going to visit his grandfather that weekend and asked if I would like to go? Of course! A few days later, I wound up in the countryside, where a box of old letters tied with string were taken from a dusty closet. No, this was not the grandfather of my family, but we must be related somehow. It was from this farmhouse in the countrysidewith knob-and-tube electrical wiring, where cooking was done on a woodstove, where the screen door was falling off its hinges, where chickens clucked and crowded in the yard, where unquestioned hospitality was shown toward me, a strangerit is at this farmhouse, where I began to feel, "I am a part of this," where I understood better, the farmhouses and extended families back home. There stood the silent powerful witness: This is who you are, this is what you came out of, these are your roots, these are the things at the heart of your life. It is no wonder the Bible is full of genealogies; they are the witnesses to, "This is who we are, this is from where we have come." Each name, each generation, tells a story and contributes to the foundation of the whole family that has built the faith on which we stand. Matthew's gospel opens with an account of the lineage of Jesus: the patriarchs, the Old Testament names, the characters for better and for worse, that have all contributed to saying, "Jesus is the one who was to come." Mark, beginning with John the Baptist, prepared the way with prophesies and the proclamation that He is the one to ful ll it all. Luke began with what is foretold and how it all comes to pass as God has intended from the beginning in Zechariah's song. John's gospel began with the very origins of creation and said it was destined that the Word would become esh and John would be the last to tell of His coming. Our Biblical and spiritual heritage tells us collectively "This is who we are as God's people" and getting to know the family is nding ourselves at the same time. The roots of our faith are the roots of our own identities and who God intends for us to be. Recently, the tragedy at the Boston Marathon brought out a resurgence of "We are a strong people, we will recover, we will not be defeated, this is who we are!" These prideful and patriotic emotions are truly heartwarming to see. It is from the forging of one people, through generations of lives together, through our national genealogies and common visions, and our sharing and remembering, that give us unshakeable roots and endless hope. I pray that we may be faithful in our generation and give these same qualities to those who will follow us. "We are the people of His pasture and the Sheep of His hand, Oh that today you would hearken to His voice (Psalm 95). BY MELISSA BELTZ mbeltz@newszap.comOn April 22, the Clewiston Police Department responded to a call from Ace Hardware regarding a possible theft. Alexis Jennings, 29, of Clewiston, is said to have attempted to charge personal items to the business account of her employer, Gulfstream Goodwill Industries. The items the suspect attempted to purchase included a six-piece patio set, a lighted ceiling fan, carpet cleaner, and toilet bowl cleaner, which totaled $258.46. After arriving at Ace Hardware, the responding of cer from Clewiston Police, Of cer Bozzi, contacted the authorized signer for Gulfstream's account, Charles Sargent, 60. Sargent informed Of cer Bozzi that Jennings was an employee of Gulstream Goodwill Industries, but she was currently on suspension. Sargent then contacted her Jennings' supervisor, who stated he wished to press charges against the suspect, as she was not authorized to purchase personal items on the business account. An employee of Ace Hardware, Aileen Filiponi, 20, told police that Jennings had been in Ace Hardware on April 13, as well. Jennings reportedly purchased $87.63 worth of personal merchandise on the company account that day, including seed packets, storage bags, disinfecting wipes, bleach, antibacterial soap, a cigarette butt disposal bucket, and several "Beanie Babies" toys. In a statement made to police, Filiponi said she found it strange that Gulfstream Goodwill was making purchases on a Saturday, due to problems they have had in the past. Filiponi also stated she found it very weird that Jennings would purchase "Beanie Boos" under her employer's account. Jennings later told police she intended to pay her company back for her purchases and she had only wanted Ace Hardware to place a hold on the items. However, since Jennings used Gulfstream Goodwill Industries' account and signed Sargent's name to the receipt, the items were considered paid for. Jennings was placed under arrest and charged with larceny and using a ctitious signature of a corporate of cer. Jennings has since been released on bail. The accident happened at around 3 p.m. on A pril 28, as Deputy Michael Angelo Favara, 38, w as traveling west on U.S. 27 towards Clewiston. In an attempt to make a traf c stop on a 2013 Ford 4D, also traveling west on U.S. 27, the deputy turned on his patrol vehicle's ashing lights. Reacting to the ashing lights, the driver of the Ford 4D stopped abruptly, causing Deputy Favara to strike the rear-end of the vehicle. The occupants of the Ford 4D were Helene Maria Egger, 59; Betefan Egger, 55; and Erwin Karl Matscher, 68; tourists from Lana, Italy. Sheriff Steve Whidden responded to the accident invloving his deputy. "When deputies are initiating traf c stops ... there are many tasks and decisions that have to be made in a short period of time and accidents do happen, however, deputies should have their vehicles far enough behind, to prevent a collision if an abrupt stop is made," the sheriff said. "This crash was investigated by FHP and will also be investigated by our own accident review board." No injuries were reported and no charges have been led. Hendry Deputy Rear-Ends Car In Routine Traf c Stop BY MELISSA BELTZ mbeltz@newszap.comWhat started as a routine traf c stop turned into an arrest for drug possession, after an Orlando man hid bags of marijuana under the hood of his car. Herve Erilus, 34, of Orlando, was arrested in LaBelle yesterday, April 29, on charges of drug possession, by an of cer of the Hendry County Sheriff's Of ce (HCSO), Of cer Bolt. Of cer Bolt was on patrol in Labelle when he observed Erilus' vehicle speeding past him. Of cer Bolt promptly performed a traf c stop on Erilus, whereupon Erilus provided Of cer Bolt with his driver's license, registration and an expired insurance card. While conducting the traf c stop, a second of cer, Of cer Thomas, arrived to assist Of cer Bolt. Of cer Thomas informed Of cer Bolt that he detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Of cer Thomas was asked to approach Erilus to see if he had located his updated insurance card, as well as to see if he could smell the odor from inside the vehicle. The odor, however, was not detected from the interior of the vehicle. Of cer Bolt then approached Erilus and asked if he had any marijuana inside the vehicle, to which Erilus responded he did not, but he had smoked inside his vehicle earlier that day. Of cer Bolt informed Erilus that he was going to deploy his K9 partner his drug snif ng dog and conduct a "free air sniff" of the exterior of the vehicle. The K9 partner traced the odor to its point of origin: the front left fender well of Erilus' vehicle. This gave Of cer Bolt probable cause to search Erilus' vehicle and upon opening the hood of the car, Of cer Bolt found a grey bag lled with hydroponic marijuana, and a second bag lled loosely with another type of marijuana. Due to the heat of the engine, Erilus' bags of marijuana began to smoke, allowing of cers and anyone else in the vicinity to smell the potent odor. Both the amount of marijuana and the separation of the two kinds, led to Of cer Bolt arresting Erilus on charges of drug possession and the intent to sell for pro t. Erilus was also issued a citation for his outdated insurance card. Orlando man hides bags of pot under car hood

SCHOOL BRIEFS “Once this investigation is complete we should have more answers as far as being able to tell why this happened,” stated Marquith. Of cials with the police department explained that more information would be released after the investigation is completed. However, a Walmart employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, explained that workers are still shaken up from the incident. “It’s just scary,” the source stated. “That’s one little thing, and you just never really know there could be bigger things that come along.” Marquith wants to assure residents that “the police department is going to go down every possible avenue to assess this situation.” The Clewiston Police Department revealed that video surveillance cameras were not pointed directly at the location where the hand grenade was found. Police are now looking -literally -at every angle, using the numerous cameras located around the vicinity, to see if they can identify the person who placed the inactive grenade outside of Walmart. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 14 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 2, 2013 cessing at area mills. The Clewiston Sugar Factory processed more than 6.7 million tons of sugarcane, yielding approximately 15,350,000 cwt of sugar. U.S. Sugar’s C-Tandem is the only milling tandem in America powered by Swedish hydraulic drives and its mill rolls are 150 percent larger than any other tandem in the United States, which can grind 180 percent more cane per day than any other milling tandem in the U.S. The factory’s sugar yield of 11.83 percent is the highest in the last 20 years. The 20122013 cane crop also produced 40.4 million gallons of molasses and 193,308 MWhrs of electricity. U.S. Sugar also delivered nearly 485,000 tons of sugarcane to the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida and 213,000 tons to Okeelanta Mill for processing under terms of the 2012 Duda acquisition. With so many tons of sugar being produced, consumers may be wondering why they haven’t seen a drop in price at the supermaket. Sanchez explains, “With sugar prices falling to 1980-era levels, the only winners in the current oversupply situation are large global food processing companies, who are pocketing large pro ts from cheap sugar rather than passing those cost savings along to the consumer. “As sugar prices have fallen sharply in the last two years, the price of candy and other sweet treats have gone up, creating an incredibly sour situation for both American sugar farmers and consumers,” Sanchez said. Despite the high prices for consumers, U.S. Sugar employees can enjoy a relaxing summer, knowing they had a successful crop this season. “We commend all our employees for safely and ef ciently growing, harvesting and processing a great crop again this year,” Sanchez said. Last year, U.S. Sugar harvested 6.9 million tons of sugarcane, 6.56 million tons of which were processed in Clewiston, to yield 14.9 million cwt of raw sugar, 41 million gallons of molasses and 191,263 MWhrs of electricity. This compares with the national average, which has fallen 1.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.49/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 36.1 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 21.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 32.2 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. "The party at the pump with the seasonally lower prices may be temporarily over," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "We've seen situations unfold that have caused a reversal in the downward trend, and those situations are multiplying across portions of the U.S. and Canada. Along the West Coast, supply has grown tight and will lead to likely increases, and in the Great Lakes prices may spike 10-20c/gallon in the next two days in over a half dozen states as a result of a similar situation. Re neries are nishing what was an extensive maintenance season and with plant restarts commencing, problems may develop, putting pressure on prices," DeHaan said.
