BY SAVANNAH ROUNDS e Clewiston NewsThe discussion regarding who would be lling the empty city manager position at the Feb. 21 city commission meeting lead to Commissioner Rick Miller inadvertently questioning Commissioners Julio Rodriguez, Mali Gardner, and Mayor Phillip Roland's ability to follow the Sunshine Law -which prohibits them from speaking to one another regarding commission matters outside of a public hearing. The discussion began when the nalists for the manager's position were narrowed down to six, out of an original 31 applicants. In order to reduce the time that it would take to interview them, commissioners discussed whether or not it would be appropriate to reduce the number further "I will make a motion to interview the top three candidates," stated Commissioner Gardner. This would put Al Perry, Mark Chamberlain and Andrew DeCandis in the nal selection of candidates vying for the city manager position, with Al Perry having the most votes out of the three. BY TIMOTHY SAENZ Special to the Clewiston NewsTiger quarterback Tyler Clemmons and running back DeMarcus Terry on Monday signed papers committing them to play for Lindenwood University Belleville. Both will compete for spots at their positions for the Lynx, who play in the NAIA and whose program enters its second year. Belleville lies in southwestern Illinois about 17 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The 2010 census reports a population of over 44,000. Clewiston High School held a signing ceremony for the two Tigers in the school auditorium, where parents, family, friends, and some teammates gathered to wish them well. "I'm proud for him," said Tyler's father, Richard. "I'm happy," Ellen Clemmons, Tyler's mother, echoed. "It's okay now until we get ready to send him off," The Terrys shared the same sentiments. "I feel a lot good," Katrina Terry, DeMarcus' mother, said. "He was nervous at rst. I'm very proud for him. He worked very hard for it." I'm very happy. He's going to be the rst one [in the family] to go to college," said Emanuel Terry, DeMarcus' father, and himself a standout offensive tackle and defensive end from the Clewiston High School powerhouse squads of 1991-94. "I'm a proud parent. He did everything I asked him to do schoolwise, behavior-wise. He's done everything." They had help. Emanuel Terry praised Tiger Head Coach Joe Roth for making the kids' opportunities possible. "We didn't get the looks we were supposed to get," Emanuel Terry said. "but Coach Roth made sure every one of our guys got looked at. Day and night, he was making calls." Tyler Clemmons said he was *Available on select new Fords. Deputies with the Hendry County Sheriff's Of ce were in for a surprise after receiving a call regarding a disturbance at the Pioneer Shell gas station on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:15 p.m. Deputies arrived to nd a chaotic scene: the gas station parking lot, and parking lots of nearby businesses were overrun with vehicles, trailers and people. One deputy's K-9 showed an interest in one particular vehicle. Upon seeing the deputy, the suspect, later identi ed as Anthony Tevoris Cole, who resides in Riviera Beach, quickly entered the driver's side of the vehicle and began to pull away. According to the arrest report, the deputy then ran towards the white Oldsmobile and began hitting the trunk with the palm of his right hand, shouting at the suspect to stop the vehicle. The suspect ignored the deputy's commands and continued to maneuver the vehicle through the crowd, attempting to get onto S.R. 80. He continued to drive away, and ignored yet another deputy's motion to pull over. In one of the more dramatic and dangerous moments, the suspect reportedly accelerated towards one of the deputies, forcing him to throw himself onto the side of the road to avoid being struck by the vehicle. Both deputies then pursued the suspect in their vehicles, with one travelling in an opposite lane, attempting to clear the traf c to avoid a possible collision. Priming the PumpBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchThere’s an old story from the days of the Great Depression about an outof-work and down on his luck drifter who got lost in the desert. There was no rain, and everything around him was parched and dry. He began to fear that he would soon die, when he suddenly came upon an old pump, holding the promise of drinking water, life, and renewal. Attached to the pump was an old baking powder can. He opened the can and found a folded note inside, protected from the harsh desert environment. The note said, “This pump works good as of June 1932. I put a new washer into it and it ought to last ve years. But the washer dries up and the pump has got to be primed. Under the white rock I buried a bottle of water. There’s enough water in it to prime the pump, but not if ya drink some rst. Pour out about one fourth and let ‘er soak to wet the leather washer. Then pour in the rest medium fast and pump like crazy. You all will git water. The well has never run dry. Have faith. When ya get yerself all watered up, ll the bottle back up and and put ‘er back like you found it for the next feller.” (signed) Desert Pete P.S. “Don’t go drinking up the water rst. Prime the pump with it and you’ll get all you can hold.” How is it possible to move from what we are to what we might become? Faith. Faith is the answer. Faith is like Desert Pete’s pump that needs to be primed before it brings forth the life giving water. Sometimes we’ve got to pump real hard to get the water owing. That’s faith, and faith isn’t always easy. In a world that wants black and white answers, meals in a minute, instant grati cation, and reward without labor, faith is hard work. Faith says take up a cross. Faith says trust God not gold. Faith says the well-worn path is not usually the best path. Faith says there’s no such thing as impossible. Faith says someone who doesn’t look anything like you is still your brother, your sister, and God’s child. It’s hard work priming the pump with faith, but the result is water that ows and ows and glori es God. In John 4:4, we read about Jesus and the woman at the well and some of the blessings of “Living Water.” What Jesus did for the woman at the well, He can do for us! Some of us need to hear that today. Some of us need to hear that God can x what’s broken, heal what’s wounded, resuscitate what has died or dried up. We need to hear it and believe it and begin pumping like crazy. We need renewed faith, but we also need to do something with the faith we already have. Think back to that story about Desert Pete. Think of that note he left. Think of the water he buried. Think of how he made it possible for water to ow in the desert. We need to do the same. Many of us have tasted the water and been blessed with its refreshing and life-bringing properties. We’ve experienced the joy and hope it brings. But it doesn’t just belong to us. The water is for all who thirst, and we need to share it so that those who come behind us can prime their pumps as well. Great work kids! Clewiston Middle School celebrates employees of distinctionBY GIGI MEZZIO Clewiston Middle SchoolClewiston Middle School (CMS) is proud to celebrate three employees of distinction. This terri c trio, Rosa Perez, Robin Worley, and Terrie Garcia, have all proven to represent meritorious service in their profession. On Feb. 12, Mrs. Perez, former Dean of Clewiston Middle School, was promoted to the position of Assistant Principal for her exemplary performance and leadership abilities. Rosa has faithfully served Clewiston as an educator for 23 years. She began her career as an elementary teacher for 15 years and fell in love with teaching. During this time, she completed her Masters Degree in Reading as well as completing a degree in Education Leadership and furthered her training as an Ed. Specialist. She then spent ve years as a Reading Coach before moving up to the position of Dean at CMS, where she has displayed laudable accomplishments for the past three years. Rosa was selected as the Golden Apple Teacher in 2003-04 and again in 2008-09 and was also subsequently chosen as Hendry County Teacher of the Year in 2010. We are very fortunate to have Rosa on the CMS administrative team, along with VP/Dean Johnston and Principal Ensor. CMS Teacher of the Year, Robin Worley, has taught more than 40 years in Florida. She states that the rst years were "all over the place." The next 25 years she taught at Palm Beach Gardens high school in West Palm, spent the next six to eight years teaching in Lake Placid high school, where she lives, and has been here at CMS for the past 4 years, teaching Algebra 1 and Algebra 1 Honors to skilled 8th graders. "I know how important teaching Algebra is to the students at CMS, as it is the foundation for every math class they will take in high school and college. That is why it is worth my time and effort to drive to Clewiston every day for my students at CMS. I love what I do each and every day," Robin stated. Mrs. Terrie Garcia, CMS employee of the year, was declared District Employee of the Year. Way to go! We are so proud of you and your faithfulness. Mrs. Garcia, who started her career as a TMH Profound paraprofessional, went on to work in the migrant program for 15 years. After her two children grew up, she earned her business degree and subsequently gained employment as a data entry secretary for Hendry County Schools. Keynote speaker and TKA Chaplain, Mr. Gary Butler, challenged students to apply God’s word to the pillars of the prestigious organization: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to students. The group strives to recognize the total student, who excels in all areas. In addition to the intangible qualities, students at TKA Clewiston must maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher in order to be considered for membership.

Students from The King’s Academy had an opportunity to tour U.S. Sugar’s operations in Clewiston and Belle Glade On Thurdsay, Feb. 21. Students witnessed harvesting techniques, toured the mill and were given a seminar on agricultural research as a part of their experience. “I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve heard a lot about US Sugar, but this was the rst time I’d ever been there,” said TKA 8th grader, Ashley Roth. “After touring the elds and the mill, my whole concept of what they do has changed. I thought it was mostly machines, but didn’t realize how many people it takes, working as hard as they do, to run the business. The people were really nice. I would de nitely like to do it again.” The tour was organized by VP of Agricultural Operations, Mr. Ken McDuf e, and began with a trip to one of USSC’s newly acquired sugar cane elds in Belle Glade. Here, students witnessed controlled burning and harvesting procedures. Students were given the opportunity to ride various styles of harvesting equipment and interact with the operators. The group was then taken to lunch at the Dunwoody Ranch, where Mr. Lee Davis conducted a seminar on agricultural research. He stressed the importance of education as he talked to students about how long it takes to develop one productive variety of sugar cane. According to 11th grade student Dakodah Davis, “Having grown up around the cane business, I am really interested in the research and harvesting operations. I didn’t realize how long it takes to create one successful crop. This really changed my outlook on how complicated the process is.” The tour concluded with students being taken to the mill in Clewiston where they were able to see, rst-hand, the various stages of the re ning and packaging process. There was no shortage of wide eyes as the group encountered the incredible scale of the operations being performed. The re nery tour was led in part by Mr. Vernon (Bo) Prevatt, whose grandson Bryce Lawson is a 9th grade student at TKA. “I thought it was awesome! Going to the eld and actually seeing how it’s done, and experiencing riding in their tractor was really cool. It was a great thing to see my grandfather. Hanging out with him, wearing the hard hat, it was like we were working alongside one another,” said Bryce. TKA freshman Myles Polhill joined the rest of the group in amazement at the grandeur of the process. “The mill tour was my favorite part. Seeing how complex everything was. I enjoyed seeing the machines pouring the sugar and packaging the ve pound bags. Their speed and accuracy were incredible. It was really cool to go through the warehouse and see the raw sugar piled up like a mountain.” 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 10 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 28, 2013 BY BUTCH WILSON Clewiston MuseumDeep in the Everglades exotic plants grow, whose mysterious origins date back hundreds of years ago to Mexico. The spiraling plants are nestled deep within the canopies of tropical, hardwood hammocks. Fleshy, emerald foliage protrudes from their serpentine vines, and once a year clusters of greenish-yellow owers bloom, pollinate, and produce elongated bean pods. Naturalists walking through the Everglades Fakahatchee Strand stop and gaze upon the owery beauty of these plants, while the “World of Cookery” is smitten by a wonderfully favored spice that is extracted from this variety of orchid. It is an old and endeared spice called Vanilla. Vanilla Orchids growing in the legendary Everglades may come as a surprise, but there will be more orchid surprises awaiting you at the Clewiston Museum on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m. Guest speaker, Milton Carpenter, is presenting a program on orchids and his newly published book titled “From the Hand of God to the Miracles of Orchids.” His autographed books will be available for purchase after the presentation. Mr. Carpenter has been growing orchids for over 40 years. He was a former president of the American Orchid Society (AOS) and the Orchid Society of Palm Beach, as well as an accredited judge for AOS. His beautifully illustrated book shows over 40 breathtaking photos of orchids that he has hybridized. It captures his infatuation with orchids, a never ending passion that would carry him on an odyssey around the globe as a lecturer, hybridizer, consultant, author, photographer, and researcher. His new book is also an historical treasure that provides an intriguing perspective into Mr. Carpenter’s life as he relates to his boyhood days in a Glades community called Pahokee. It was in this small, rural town that he later met and married the attractive, young Nancy Seger. Their marriage would blossom in Belle Glade and produce three beautiful daughters Colette, Karen and Peggy. It was a romantic affair that grew into a 63-year-old love story. Enclosed in each of Mr. Carpenter’s books are two CDs. The rst CD features the talented Carpenter family singing numerous gospel hymns. The second CD captures the adventures of Mr. & Mrs. Carpenter as they travel to distant lands in their quests for orchids. Both CDs are excellent and make a nice bonus package. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this wonderful evening at the Clewiston Museum as Mr. Carpenter ushers his audience into the world of orchids; one lled with beautiful, owering plants and enchanting words. Please contact the Clewiston Museum at 863983-2870 or email us at clewistonmuseum@ embarqmail.com for questions concerning the program. The teachers were recognized during the 2013 Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Dinner held at the LaBelle Civic Center on February 7, 2013. The awards were ttingly named "Brilliant Orange," as Hendry County ranks as one of Florida's top orange producing counties. Ron Hamel, Gulf Citrus Growers Association's executive vice president, presented the Brilliant Orange Awards to the ve teachers selected as the best " rst year" teachers in Hendry County for the 2012-2013 school year. Recognized were: Brooke Barnes, a third grade teacher from Central Elementary School in Clewiston; Charlene Bowen, a fourth grade teacher from Upthegrove Elementary School in LaBelle; Kristin Mann, a fourth grade teacher from Eastside Elementary School in Clewiston; Shannon Springs, a media specialist from Westside Elementary School in Clewiston, and Katie Wilson, a band director at Clewiston High School. The Gulf Citrus Growers Association, in conjunction with the Foundation For Hendry County Public Schools, Inc., annually selects the Brilliant Orange teachers based on nominations from each of the schools' administrators. GCGA is a trade association representing citrus growers in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee Counties. New Teachers Earn Brilliant Orange Award SUBMITTED PHOTO But not all of the commissioners agreed. "I'm going to vote no," stated Commissioner Jimmy Pittman. "I don't want to shortchange the city by not possibly having that right guy that might be the fourth or fth [candidate]." Commissioner Miller agreed with Pittman's statements. "I am going to go ahead and say something that I've heard since Monday's meeting," began Miller. "I'm not trying to make anybody mad, but this is something that has come to my attention and I think it needs to be out there. Basically, at this point we have been given 31 names and their resumes. At this point, at each of us looking at these 31 names, I can't help but think that it's ironic that three commissioners ranked number one a candidate that, looking by job quali cations, actually ranks, in my opinion, one of the least quali ed. I just nd that very ironic. "You know, like I said, without any communications between commissioners, which I know would not be proper, it just seemed kind of strange that each would rank him rst. Not based off of job quali cations at all, not based off of work experience at all, but based off of, apparently, where he lives and where he was born and raised. It's nothing personal, just something that people have brought to my attention in the last few days. And it just kind of got me thinking." Commissioner Gardner responded almost immediately. "My goodness Rick," began Gardner, "if I brought up everything that people brought to my attention, we would be here all night; about commissioners meeting together or being at each other's houses, and what are they really discussing? But that is irrelevant to what this discussion is today." The commissioner said she was ready for a change after sour experiences with previous city manager administrations. "I will tell you that after the past ten years of seeing professional city managers who have been certi ed do what they do in the name of city management over the city, I have been disgusted," Commissioner Gardner. Mayor Roland responded more forcefully. "[At] the meetings that I came to before I was elected I saw three to two votes so many times and I never heard the innuendos, Rick, that you use every time that you think you're going to be on the back side of that vote. You've done it three or four times since I've been Mayor. Two times very, very openly. You've made statements that said that the three commissioners that are going to vote the other way are in collusion-" "I never used that word," stated Miller. "Well, you said it," exclaimed Mayor Roland. "You can look at the minutes and read them. Whether you really mean that or not, I don't know. But I don't appreciate it, and I can tell you that if you're going to say it then know something and you make charges or something else. But don't question my integrity again. I'm serious." The meeting ended with a three-two vote to interview the top three candidates. MANAGERContinued 1 BY TIMOTHY SAENZ Special to the Clewiston NewsThe Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter at Clewiston High School just completed a whirlwind week that saw its members cook, auction, plant, raise money, and earn awards. The National FFA is a student led organization that promotes growth and success in agriculture. It was their way to celebrate National FFA Week in a spirit of enterprise, service, and fun. That's the purpose of FFA, not only nationally, but at Clewiston High School, where Agriculture Teachers, Janyel Smith and Jennie Goffe, are building leadership and success in agriculture for tomorrow's Clewiston. "Our students learned the value of their membership in the FFA this week. Both the opportunity for service and accomplishment it provides, but also the many meaningful bene ts," Smith said. "This National FFA week was a huge success for our rst year, and we're going to keep striving for that; hoping to make it bigger and better for next year," Goffe added. The CHS FFA students capped their week with cookouts Thursday through Saturday at the Week's Auction. Smith and Goffe paired select local FFA members and of cers with FFA Alumni to pull off the event, which raises money for the Richard and Caroline Pape Scholarship. The FFA Alumni award the prestigious Pape Scholarship to seniors in agriculture education to promote their continued growth. At the Hendry County Fair, CHS FFA Chapter member Bradley Lytle showed the school chapter pig, which tipped the scales at 257 pounds. The school chapter received $10 per pound for her, an amount Smith described as "amazing." Three other students Alan Smith, Kyle Knaack, and Jude Moss earned Show FFA. And though he was showing 4-H at the fair, FFA member Weston Rayburn received Senior Showmanship. 55 CHS FFA students received their Greenhand Degree, which acknowledges their knowledge and practice of the FFA Code and their plan for a supervised agricultural project. In other activities, CHS FFA student members dressed up to display their spirit, promoted the FFA and sought donations at the local Tractor Supply, and cooked out for the teachers and administrators just to show appreciation for "the seeds they plant." "We're just so grateful for the tremendous support of the administration, faculty, and staff of Clewiston High School," Smith and Goffe said. "We're going to keep developing leaders in agriculture and agricultural success in our education program." Clewiston High School FFA Cooks Up Week of Success

Mr. Ramunni told the board that it did not conform to Florida Statutes when making the decision. They will need to know which department will take over the IT responsibilities before a budget can be determined. No headhunterThe county commissioners have not opted to employ a “headhunter” to nd a new county administrator, as had been previously reported. There is no hard deadline for applications, however, those submitted before April 1 will be considered rst. The application period will remain open until the position is lled.County property A bid of $175,000 for the building at 88 N. Main Street in LaBelle was ultimately accepted at the February 26 meeting, after the bidder offered to pay closing costs as well. Speaking to the board, he told them the $300,000 price tag was way out of line. He noted that the property is 1.14 acres, however, one acre of that is drainage; the remaining .14 acres includes currently unacceptable setbacks and an easement for Burger King access. The building has been for sale for a year with only one bidder, the man whose counter bid they accepted that night. He told them he plans to put in of ce suites for local businesses and to use one section as a “lawyer’s club” to be used by attorneys during court proceedings. The board also decided to turn the old probation of ce on Main Street over to a realtor, as should all county property to be sold. In other business:Commissioner Janet Taylor suggested the county ask its federal lobbyist to nd out how the possible sequestration would affect Hendry County. The board agreed with Chairman Karson Turner’s suggestion that Interim County Administrator Mark Lapp nd estimates of the cost of broadcasting county commission meetings. A large group of 4-H supporters came to voice their concerns about the moving of a LaBelle agent and a Clewiston agent to the opposite sides of the county. The group was concerned about the affect the switch of these veteran agents was having on the 4-H’ers and the loss of transportation for horse club members. In addition, commissioners were unhappy about the cost of gas paid for one of the agents. Mr. Lapp was directed to “work it out.” Clerk Questions IT Changes

BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonSixty-two checklists have been submitted online at www.BirdCount.org for the Feb. 15 through 18 Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) for Glades, Hendry, and Okeechobee County. Over 138 species with over 188,000 individual birds were reported for these three inland counties. The deadline for entering additional tallies is March 1st. One common resident bird observed during the GBBC was the American Crow. These birds breed throughout most of Florida. The American Crow is a large, intelligent bird with long black legs and a heavy black straight bill. It has broad rounded wings with wingtip feathers that spread like ngers. Its short tail is rounded or squared off at the end. These birds have more than 20 calls, with the most common being a harsh "caw." Immature American Crows give a higher-pitched nasal call similar to the call of a Fish Crow. One of the American Crow call's is the loud "mobbing alert" when they work together to harass or drive off predators. The oldest known wild American Crow lived to be 16 years old and one captive Crow lived to be 59 years old. These clever birds sometimes make and use tools. They will shape a piece of wood and stick it in a hole in a fence post in search of food or break of pieces of pine cone to drop on tree climbers near a nest. They are often found in or around wooded areas in rural and urban areas. These birds will eat almost anything and are often seen feeding on the ground. Their diet can include insects, small animals, seeds, fruit, garbage, carrion, and chicks that they rob from nests. The breeding pair will build a nest of mediumsized twigs, usually in the crotch near the trunk of a tree, or on a horizontal branch normally in the top one third or quarter of a tree. The average clutch of four eggs is laid between mid-February to mid-April. The male and female will both help incubate the eggs for 18 days with the young edging at 28 to 35 days of age. The award is given to less than 80 students in Florida. BY MARY GIBSON Special to e Clewiston NewsThe Florida Land Boom was a time in the 1920’s when Florida real estate and business was at an all time high, convincing many people to move down to Florida to buy real estate and start up their businesses. One such man was G.L. Royal. Mr. Royal moved to Florida from South Georgia, and found it very unlike the state he had just left. However, as most people do, he loved the area and built his business there. He started out in what is now known as Lake Park, and managed a general store before opening his own business. However, shorty after, in the hurricane of 1928, he lost everything. Though this was an inconceivable disaster, his misfortune did not end there; as he was then blind-sided by the Great Depression in 1929. This made Mr. Royal very conservative in his business philosophy. He knew the meaning of hard work, having to stand in lines for hours for little more than ten dollars a week, and instilled that philosophy into how he ran his business. When the 1960s rolled around, Mr. Royal passed his business on to his son, Larry Royal, who took over and had many more stores opened by the 1970s. Then, in 1984, the department chain known as Walmart was sold to McCrory’s Corporation, and Royal’s Furniture Company began. The company is part of the Larry Royal family businesses and all three of Larry’s sons (Jeff, Chuck, and Mike) are involved. Royal’s Furniture Company now has stores in Clewiston, Belle Glade, Okeechobee, Immokalee, and Sebring. The company was built on a rm foundation of “hard work, honesty, and integrity” as Jeff Royal, one of Larry Royal’s sons, put it. “We have had our share of ups and downs as any company, but feel blessed to even be in business,” said Jeff. “Royal’s has always been a company based on biblical, Christian principles, and with God’s help, we will be able to weather the future storms of adversity and enjoy the times of blessing, whatever they may be.” Royal Family Business Had Humble Roots “pretty excited about this”, a big smile stretched across his face as he sat with DeMarcus Terry at a table anked by bright, multi-colored balloons and point-and-shoots popping as both young men signed. Clemmons helped lead the Tigers to the regional playoffs two years in a row. He’s a prostyle, dropback quarterback who can make deep throws. He plans to major in Physical Education at LU-Belleville. When Terry hits the books, it will be in Business Management. He mulled over LU-Belleville and two other schools, but history won out. “It’s been a long, stressful process,” Terry said, “but I’ll be going to school with one of my best teammates [Tyler] growing up together since kindergarten.” The signings bring to four the total number of Tiger football players headed for college programs. All-star offensive tackle Clem Nealy and all-star center Miguel Perera had already inked commitments. FOOTBALLContinued 1
