BY SAVANNAH ROUNDS srounds@newszap.comA shocked silence followed the room as Rick Miller, Mayor of Clewiston, stated “The motion passes.” At the city commission meeting, held on Monday night, a number of items were set on the agenda to be discussed. However, a few issues were brought into the agenda as last-minute items, bringing an air of surprise to those present. “I would like to add to the agenda the City Manager’s Evaluation for 2012,” stated Commissioner Mali Gardner. Gardner was asking to discuss, and vote upon City Manager Steve McKown’s job. Though it may seem like an easy task for a supervisor to re an employee, with the city commission board, a majority vote from the ve commissioners is needed in order to make a nal decision regarding such matters. “That’s the bad thing about having ve bosses,” stated McKown. “One characteristic that some comBY SAVANNAH ROUNDS srounds@newszap.comAt the most recent Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, which was held on Nov. 15, a number of things were discussed and reviewed; however, one that stood out was the presentation of the idea to renovate the currently inoperable baseball eld located in Harlem. In order to accomplish this, the Harlem community reached out to the U.S. Sugar Corporation for the funds to turn this dream into a reality and were granted $10,000. The only thing needed was the permission of the BOCC, which rejected the donation after deliberation. With the BOCC currently in the process of creating an East Recreational board, which will serve as an advisory board regarding recreation in the Eastern portion of Hendry County, some commissioners felt that their hard work regarding the creation of the new recreational board was going unnoticed. The Clewiston Tigers rode for four hours on a chartered bus to Cocoa, brimming with hope, optimism fueled by a team laden with seniors, a week of intense practice, a sense that they were capable of much more than their 4-6 record told, and playoff experience against the opponent they would face. Lord knows the boys were due, at least from an earthly perspective; they were due a game where they put it all together against a high school football power and earned the laurels of victory and the admiration of their fans. The boys would make Friday a carpe diem night, and they would sit down with family and friends at their respective Thanksgiving tables this week to bask in the glow of an astonishing upset, an accomplishment that they could take with them when they graduated, no matter what would happen afterwards. The Lord’s economy differs from the earthly one, and by the time the last second on the running clock had expired at, inappropriately enough, Tiger Stadium in Cocoa, the Tigers had been overrun by a mighty foe, 56-7, and the springs of their Tigers Find Their Heart as Playoff Run Ends City Manager Terminated; City Attorney Next in Line? The money will be used in the restoration of what is now known as Woodworks Park. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 2 Section A Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 22, 2012 “With us currently in the process of moving things forward with the East Recreation Board, I felt like the request from the Harlem Community was a hit in the nose,” said Karson Turner, BOCC Vice President. Commissioner Al Perry mirrored Turner’s thoughts, stating “I didn’t understand the purpose of it. Basically, I would rather see them take that money and help the kids pay to play on the city elds.” Sylvester Humphrey, the Harlem resident who presented the idea to the board, was confused as to why the board objected the generous donation from U.S. Sugar. Judy Sanchez, Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for U.S. Sugar, was also baf ed as to the boards rejection. “We didn’t realize that this was going to be such a controversial issue,” stated Sanchez, “and in the end it really only ends up hurting the children.” After the idea was proposed, Commissioner Turner was curious as to how much the renovation of the baseball eld would cost, though Humphrey gave the BOCC an estimate at the meeting. “County employees did the estimate of how much it would cost to do the renovation for us and stated that it would be about $5,000,” stated Humphrey. “The other $5,000 was going to be used to develop baseball activities for the youth.” “Immediately after the meeting I requested for some people to go out and look at the eld, they were not county employees, and estimate the cost of xing it,” stated Turner. “The budgetary number that I received was less than $2,000.” BOCC Commissioner Janet Taylor feels that his number may be much lower because the commissioner may have set a lower quality level than what Humphrey expected. “They want a nice and proper eld and I don’t believe that $2,000 will do the job properly,” stated Taylor, to which Humphrey agreed. As the issue was brought to the board and denied, the money that U.S. Sugar donated was given back and the baseball eld does not currently have a set date to be repaired. However, Comissioner Perry insists that they were trying to look at the big picture regarding the issue. “I’m all for the kids, it has nothing to do with them,” stated Perry. “We’re just trying to be smart about this issue.” When asked whether or not the issue was going to be presented to the board again, Humphrey stated that it would not be. “It’s sad that he has been discouraged from doing a good thing,” stated Taylor. Perhaps when the East Recreational Board is nalized they will discuss the issue further, however, the creation of said board is still underway and applicants are still being reviewed. MEETINGContinued 1 missioners may like about me, others may not be able to stand.” Gardner was relentless in her pursuit to replace McKown, and as such came prepared with a list of issues that concerned her about the manager’s performance. The list included points such as his lack of leadership, lack of informing commissioners of all that is going on, lack of getting things done in a timely fashion, and lack of informing commissioners of nal decisions regarding certain issues. One of the issues that Gardner was adamant about was regarding McKown discussing issues that are going on with her and keeping her ‘in the loop,’ so to speak. While she felt that the communication between herself and McKown was an important aspect of the commissioner/manager relationship, she felt that the manager should have made it a priority to meet with all commissioners on a regular basis, rather than simply sending out an informational email. Other commissioners, like Jimmy Pittman, disagreed. “If I have a question for Steve. I go nd Steve and ask him,” said Commissioner Pittman. “He doesn’t always have to come to us with issues. We want a city manager who is going to take initiative and do things without having to be told. We hire a city manager, basically as the CEO for our city. I’m sorry if that ruf ed some feathers, but that’s what we need and how it should be.” However, Gardner was not the only commissioner questioning McKown’s decisions and judgements. “Steve has made a lot of bad decisions in the past few years,” stated Commissioner Julio Rodriguez, “which is why I am going to make a motion to terminate Steve’s employment tonight.” McKown seemed to be thoughtful as he stated “I can change anything that needs to be changed, as long as the commission is clear with me on what I need to do.” With the deciding vote left in the hands of the latest addition to the Commission, Phillip Roland, all eyes seemed to settle upon him. “Well, there’s a lot of heat going on in this seat,” stated Roland, to which the crowd laughed. “Before I was elected you had two commissioners that were against you, leaving you with a majority of them in your favor. However, I told you that you had one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel,” stated Roland. Gardner voted yes. Pittman, no. Rodriguez, no. Roland remained quiet, seeming to be lost in thought when Rodriguez realized that he had just voted no to his own motion. The crowd laughed as the vote was called for again, and MANAGERContinued 1 SEE MANAGER 5

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Section A 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 22, 2012 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonFive Juvenile Whooping Cranes, two female and three male, were released together on Oct. 22, at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in east/ central Wisconsin. Radio transmitters are being used to track their journey as they “tour” their wintering grounds in Florida. They arrived in Clay County on Nov. 6, Manatee County on Nov. 7, and then went to Everglades National Park before coming to Hendry County on November 9th. Information and updates about the Eastern Migratory Whooping Crane Reintroduction Project, which is administered by the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, is located at www.bringbackthecranes. org. The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) “asks anyone who encounters a whooping crane in the wild to please give them the respect and distance they need. Do not approach birds on foot within 200 yards; remain in your vehicle; do not approach in a vehicle any closer than 100 yards. Also, please remain concealed and do not speak loudly enough that the birds can hear you. Finally, do not trespass on private property in an attempt to view or photograph whooping cranes (WCEP)” Whooping Cranes are the tallest bird in North America. They are similar in shape, but are larger than Sandhill Cranes. Whooping Crane populations have rebounded from a low 15 birds in the United States in the 1940s to about 600 today. The eastern migratory population has about 110 birds (57 male and 53 female). Adults are about ve feet tall with a long neck, long legs, white body and black wingtips. They have a red patch on their foreheads. Juveniles have cinnamonbrown feathers with some white. Juveniles do not have red on their head or face. The call of these endangered birds is a loud single buglelike note. After going down by one to arch-rival, LaBelle, the Clewiston boys varsity soccer team rebounded to score a 2-1 win on Tuesday, November 13. Casey Crawford, assisted by Jesus Benitez, opened it up for the Tigers and gave them the equalizer. Jeremiah Ramirez came right back a few minutes later and, assisted by Edwin Almaras, kicked through the game winner. Goalkeeper Ali Ali made several saves to secure the win in the hard fought game. Last Thursday, the boys lost a tough contest to The King’s Academy by a 1-0 tally. The Tigers pressured nearly the entire second half but narrowly missed on several crosses and shots across the mouth of the goal that would have equalized the game. The girls varsity squad suffered a 2-1 loss at the feet of LaBelle on Tuesday, November 13. Jessica Radcliffe poked in a goal on a rst half cross from Daisy Villegas. The Cowgirls scored late on a defensive breakdown. A week ago Thursday, the Lady Tigers were egged by Glades Day, 3-0. A Reason to be Thankful Even in Hard TimesBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH.D.+ Saint Martins ChurchOnce, I began serving a new Church in a cold January. People in the congregation were proud that they had survived another year. I was a bit taken aback. I had hoped that we would have new directions and programs, outreach and growth, ministries and services to others. Over time, I began to re ect on what survival had meant to them. Other churches were closing; our church did not. Other community services were being cut back; ours continued to serve. Later, programs were added as needs were identi ed, and growth took place in new directions. I realized that survival was the rst and possibly most important step. Surviving means that you may continue when the times change. Surviving when others no longer existed means doing what you are destined to do. I had to learn that surviving freed us just enough to look ahead and plan for tomorrow. Surviving allows us to be the people God wants us to be. In another month, the Christmas story will be told once more. With the birth of Jesus came a ight into Egypt. Joseph knew that Herod was out to take the life of the newborn; a time away would be temporary, but it will also save a life and the destiny will not be thwarted. (cf. Matthew 2:13ff). Jesus does not begin His earthly ministry right away; He is "led by the spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1)." He will overcome the temptations that he is faced with and come out from this time away knowing his adversary did not succeed. Survival can mean taking a step backward or it can be a time of regrouping, refocusing and planning for another and better day. I keep hearing about having to do more and more with less and less. Cutting back, layoffs, closings, losses, things that used to be and are now eliminated. I go back to the lessons of scripture; the Christ-child lived on in a precarious world at a precarious time in history. He set the stage for a better future. There is much to be thankful for across our land even with the hardships and disasters; both natural and man-made. I am grateful for the many blessings that have come my way and things I have to share with others. I also am aware of those who feel hurt by the losses they have suffered and therefor feel less than thankful at this special time. Is there a reason to be thankful, even in the midst of great losses, sacri ces and downturns? By all means! Those who rst gave thanks in this country had just left their homeland behind and made a dangerous sea crossing; had "downsized" to cabins from homes, had left security and comfort behind to share a meal with people that must have seemed strange and very different from anything they had ever known. And they gave thanks for it all! Ahead lies hope and the opportunity for a new life. They celebrated it all, and with faith and hard work they made that dream into a reality that was never before known to the world. That is now our opportunity and reason to have faith today; and our reason to give thanks at this time. May this be a special and joyous thanksgiving for us all; may we thank God for being with us at the best and worst of times; going forward from where we are in faith and knowing that God was and is there all the time.Don’t be a Thanksgiving TurkeyBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI've been called a turkey before. No one wants to be a turkey. Being called a turkey takes on an even deeper meaning when you realize the fact that commercially grown turkeys aren't one of nature's most intelligent creatures. As a matter of fact, the domesticated turkey has been described as being "as brainless as a baseball." Even drinking can put a strain on turkey intelligence. Many aren't smart enough to close their mouths in the rain. If a turkey is outside looking up to the sky in a heavy rain, it can drown. No one wants to be a turkey. At least the turkey has an excuse for being "bird-brained." There is less excuse for us human beings. Take the nine lepers Luke writes about in Luke 17. Jesus had healed them from a disgusting, painful and unsightly skin disease. It was a tremendous gift that made it possible for them to re-enter society and reunite with their families. Ten lepers were healed. But only one leper came back and said, "Thank you." Talk about turkeys! Ten received God's blessing, but only one stopped to say thanks. Thanksgiving is upon us! Thanksgiving is the start of the season of giving and sharing and giving thanks. I'm reminded of a story I heard about the time the King of Masselbutania came to America for an operation. His American surgeon was accustomed to setting his fee on a sliding scale according to what a patient could pay. A wealthy person paid the full price. If a person was poor, he paid almost nothing. But the surgeon couldn't decide how much to charge the king. Should it be free because he was the king, or should it be signi cant, because he was the king? After all, a king is a king. Upon a whim, the surgeon sought out the king's attorney, who shared, "The king is an honorable man. Like you, he understands value. My advice to you is to simply send him an invoice with no amount indicated and then add a handwritten footnote saying, The king can do no wrong.'" The surgeon did so, and a check came back for $250,000. The surgeon was ecstatic. He sent his wife on a noholds-barred shopping spree, ordered a new car, and left on an extended cruise. He arrived home, happy and refreshed, but with very little left in his banking account. When he opened his mail, he found a bill from the king's lawyer. It had no amount written in, but there was a handwritten note saying, "The honorable Doctor can do no wrong." Thanksgiving is the time of year when we are encouraged to take a moment not only to count our many blessings, but to give thanks to our God who has helped us make it through the hardships, losses, and struggles that we have faced this year. God sends no bills for this. No statement of our account with God is going to show up in our mailbox. God does not look over our shoulders as we reach into our wallets or purses to see what we might give for Him. God does, however, trust each of us and God trusts us as a church and as a faithful community to provide and care for His ministry and the world around us. He waits for our response. Don't be a Thanksgiving Turkey! Remember, "The Honorable Giver can do no wrong." 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Section A 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 22, 2012 Religion Columns this time Roland did not hesitate with his answer, effectively terminating Mr. McKown's employment. With the events that took place, other members of the council staff who's jobs were to be discussed were taken out of the hot seat, for the time being; one of which being the City Attorney, Charles Schoech, who seemed to get special attention from Rodriguez. Rodriguez said he felt that the legal council was not living up to expectations. "If you feel that I have been giving awed legal opinions, I challenge you to nd one," stated a con dent Schoech. For the time being the issue was tabled, and the discussion regarding other City employee's positions is set to take place at the next meeting. Senior running back DeMarcus Terry was inconsolable. Senior quarterback Tyler Clemmons had walked away with his arm around Terry’s neck, talking to him, after they had shaken their foes’ hands, but eventually Terry dropped to one knee for the team prayer and could not get up when it was over. His head bowed, tears streamed down his face. He was not alone. There was senior Miguel Perera – a guy who could leg press seven teammates and a teacher at one time through the wall in the weight room – hugging Brandon Cortez, and when they split, one could see the pools in their eyes. Hardnosed senior fullback John Gonzalez walked from teammate to teammate, barely able to speak. Clemmons hugged his folks, who spoke of their pride in him, and then went to his coach, Joe Roth. When they parted from each other, the tears dribbled down. It wasn’t supposed to end this way. It is a dif cult thing to nd out your best is not enough, but if there is one thing these Tigers nally found, it was their heart. Their character had been questioned during the regular season, after one loss in particular, but in the face of insurmountable odds last Friday, the Tigers never gave up and they never stopped trying against Cocoa. There was Clemmons running down a cornerback on an interception return and throwing him, judo style, to the ground. There was the offensive line – Clem Nealy, Joe Hernandez, Perara, Jean Sanchez, and Karl Powell literally shoving the wall of Cocoa defenders backward during a 22-play drive. There was DeMarcus Terry gashing Cocoa with his quick bursts. There was Tramaine Lawson reaching higher than ever to catch a pass and running harder than ever to make plays on both sides of the ball. And there was Virthavious Robinson running back a kickoff 88 yards for the score of dignity, as if he and all his teammates were saying, We will not go quietly into the night! Like a bull ghter, Robinson stopped and pulled up around the Cocoa 30-yard line at the near sideline so a Cocoa player could gallop by harmlessly, then launched himself to the left at a 30-degree angle. When another Cocoa player looked like he would get Robinson, one of the return team members launched a punishing block that took him out. Robinson was home free, and Clewiston had gotten on the board in the fourth quarter. None of which should diminish Cocoa as a football team: they stand out as exceptional. Cocoa ran the ball a mere 22 times and racked up 391 rushing yards for a whopping 18 yards per carry. It seemed as if every time a Cocoa runner touched the ball, he ran for a long touchdown. Cocoa’s rst play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff was a 66-yard touchdown run as a back slid right to left, farside to nearside, down the line of scrimmage, taking the handoff, and bursting through a gaping hole off left tackle to the sideline and to the end zone. Cocoa would score four more times in the rst half: on a 28-yard run, a 78-yard run, a 2-yard run, and a 23-yard pass completion. Cocoa scored 28 points in the rst quarter. Clewiston took control of the clock in the second quarter, mixing passes and runs for long drives, but failed to come away with desperately needed points. Just when it looked like Clewiston had shut down the Cocoa juggernaut, a weak punt gave Cocoa a short eld, and with only a minute and a half left in the second quarter, they drove 42 yards in less than 60 seconds for their fth touchdown. The score stood at 35-0 at halftime. Cocoa’s speed on offense and their massive offensive line gave their play an advantage. Clewiston’s players gave everything they had, but while the offense clearly dented Cocoa, the defense just wasn’t equipped to deal with an opponent of Cocoa’s power and blistering speed. It will not always be that way. The pendulum swings. But it was that way this past Friday night. The Tigers take away valuable life lessons from their experience this year, including the pain of the playoff loss and the heart they found, and they can take those lessons and apply them to their lives as they graduate and move on into the workforce or into college. Every moment counts. The future is built on the now, and the victory of tomorrow is sown in the seeds planted today. Carpe diem. SPORTSContinued 1

Highly acclaimed in her portrayal of Hurston, McEwen will give special insights into Zora’s early life in Florida. McEwen, author and poet extraordinaire, will present an insightful glimpse of life into those early days and how such a talent and treasure could survive and grow intellectually and contribute so much to America’s literary treasures. The public is invited to this free event and there will be plenty of time following the presentation to tour the exhibit and enjoy refreshments. The program is being made possible through a grant provided by the Florida Humanities Council and with technical assistance from the Smithsonian Institution. Journey Stories is a Smithsonian traveling exhibit that depicts the migration of Americans across our great land, a pattern that continues today. Clewiston was one of only six communities in Florida selected to receive this prestigious exhibit. For information, contact the Museum at 863983-2870 or email clewistonmuseum@embarqmail.com.
