After countless hours of campaigning, the hard work pays offBY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comCandidates waited anxiously to hear the results of the primary election Tuesday night after encouraging citizens to vote all day. While each person had their own ideas of who the victors would be, many anticipated that some of the races would be closer than they turned out to be. For the most part, the winners scored decisive victories in their races, easily moving onto the November general election, or securing their seats outright. Out of the 16,927 registered voters, only a fraction, 4,583 to be precise, exercised their right to vote. The results are as follows: Sheriff Mark Chamberlain 56.74% Ray Van Houten 32.18% E. Carmona 11.07% Incumbent Steve Whidden 66.41% T, A P R P F P SEE REACTIONS 1 PHOTO / JOSE ZARAGOZAThe Clewiston Tigers practice for their upcoming season. For more pictures, see Page 20. Clewiston Tigers ready for action!SEE RESULTS 13 With Election Day behind them, winners and losers consider what their next move will beBY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comShortly after the conclusion of the election, candidates were bombarded with encouragements and congratulations from their diehard supporters. Phone lines were tied up, reaching relatives and informing them of the outcome. Win or lose, each candidate was lled with emotion, each taking something different from the experience. The Sheriff’s race featured Mark Chamberlain as the overall winner for the Republican party with 56.74 percent of votes in his favor and Steve Whidden with 66.41 percent of votes. “I feel wonderful. I believe we ran a very clean campaign,” said an excited Mark Chamberlain. “My opponents were both gentlemen and it has been a great experience for me and my family. But I really think it boiled down to experience. None of the other candidates had the nonstop 26 years of experience that I have.” His opponent in November, incumbent Sheriff Steve Whidden, also scored a victory on Tuesday. “First off, I want to thank all the voters for their support. I think the results shows, one, that the community is proud of their law enforcement and two, that Hendry County is ready for stability in the of ce of sheriff. That Candidates React to Results From the Polls Clewitson High School and The King’s Academy athletics mergeBY MARY GIBSON e Kings AcademyLions and Tigers are no longer battling over who will be king of the jungle. Instead, they’re ghting on the same side, representing Clewiston together. No more confusion for local students and families over which team to cheer for; they’re all Clewiston Tigers. This change occured after the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) implemented a ruling allowing students from small private schools which don’t offer athletics to compete with their locally zoned public schools. The result is that students who attend The King’s Academy, and are Clewiston residents, are able to try out and play sports with both Clewiston High School and Clewiston Middle School. CHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Joe Roth, and TKA Principal, Brian Burrage, are embracing the change and see it as an opportunity to support local student-athletes. For Clewiston High School, the change means deepening their talent pool across the board with the addition of new student-athletes and even coaches. King’s teacher and long-time Glades-area coach and of cial, Kathy “Coach Mac” MyReynolds, has stepped in and accepted the CHS volleyball coaching position. At football practice, the boys seem to mesh together well; everyone is there to play football regardless of what school they come from. Tyler Clemmons, two-year starting quarterback and senior at CHS, said, “Well, I think it is great and will really help us out. Overall, this should be a great experience for everyone.” TKA Principal, Brian Burrage states, “The bottom line is that we should all be focused on what is in the best interest of these kids and I know that Joe feels the same way. They all played youth-ball and Pop Warner [football] together growing up and they won’t skip a beat.” This is a big alteration for Clewiston, but a needed one. It is bringing Clewiston athletes, coaches, and fans together. As one, the community will support its student-athletes who are working together to represent the Clewiston. Go Tigers! Lions and Tigers…. Oh My! Winners Win Big in August Primary ElectionV. N

BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Eastern Towhee is a common bird that is sometimes called the “Ground Robin” or “Joree.” Three resident and wintering Eastern Towhee subspecies breed in Florida. These three races differ in the color of their iris. The Eastern Towhee has red eyes across most of its range, but the towhees in Florida and extreme southern Georgia may also have yellow or pale yellow (usually called “white”) eyes. These oversized sparrows are larger than other sparrows and smaller than robins. The Eastern Towhee has a chunky body, thick neck, and long rounded tail with white corners. They have a thick, triangular, seed-cracking bill. Adult males have a bold black back with warm reddish-brown sides and a white belly. Females have the same pattern, but are rich brown where males are black. The oldest known Eastern Towhee lived to be 12 years and three months old. The male’s song is a loud musical “jink denk te-e-e-e-e-e-e-e” (“drink your te-e-e-e-e-ee”). Some of the most common calls made by both sexes include rising “chewink, tow-hee or joree.” The Eastern Towhee is found in a variety of habitats in areas with dense thickets or brush where they can scratch around in the leaf litter on the ground for food. They will hop backward with both feet on the ground in the leaves and then dart after anything that they uncover. Their diet consist of a variety of seeds, fruits, insects, snails, soft leaves, and ower buds. Between April and August a breeding pair may raise two to three broods. It takes the female about ve days to build a nest made of a simple four inch cup of bark, twigs, grasses, and leaves on or near the ground. Two to ve creamy grayish eggs spotted with reddish-brown are laid in the nest. The eggs are incubated by the female for 12 to 13 days with the young edging in ten to 12 days. Eastern Towhee are being observed and heard in the Lake Okeechobee region. You are invited to join a team or volunteer to count Eastern Towhee and other bird species at your home or at in Florida locations during the Sept. 15 North American Migration Count (NAMC) sponsored by the Florida Ornithological Society and Audubon chapters. Phone or send an e-mail to Margaret England, to request information about the 7th Annual Hendry-Glades NAMC. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for free birding trips to Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA5) at the new Deer Fence Trailhead located 27 miles south of Clewiston on Aug. 18 and Sept. 15. This compares with the national average that has increased 5.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.67/g, according to gasoline price website FloridaStateGasPrices.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 3.4 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 34.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 24.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 5.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “The national average has spiked 25-cents per gallon just in the last month, thanks to an onslaught of re nery problemsmainly in the Great Lakes and California,” said GasBuddy. com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “While these situations are temporary in nature, it goes to show this nations dependence on domestic re neries. While oil prices have gained in recent days, there is some light at the end of the tunnel for motorists: driving season will be over in less than a month and soon thereafter the EPA also relaxes gasoline mandates, meaning cheaper winter fuel,” DeHaan said. we are bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community,” said incumbent Steve Whidden. Some of the candidates who are out of the race seemed to indicate their renewed focus on just getting back to their daily lives. “It’s over and done, I’m ne. Regardless, I want to thank all of my supporters and I hope that Mark Chamberlain wins it all,” said sheriff candidate Matt Beatty. When pressed to explain his support, he answered, “There are still issues in the Hendry County sheriff’s of ce.” Asked if he would entertain the thought of another run for sheriff, Mr. Beatty said, “No comment at this time.” Another highly anticipated race was the Superintendent of Schools in which Paul Puletti will now face off incumbent Rick Murphy in the General Election. “I’m amazed. I still can’t believe how responsive the people of Hendry County were, particularly in Clewiston. I never dreamed that it would turn out like this. I will continue to maintain my focus on issues related to the schools such as teacher morale and student achievement, looking at the learning gap, and dealing with these issues,” said Puletti. In a landslide win for Brenda Hoots, Democrat, in the Supervision of Election race, opponent Kim Harris-White admits that it went as she expected. “I wasn’t positive [that I would win], but I felt good about it,” said a frank Harris-White. “But there was always doubt.” Hoots was already looking forward to the next election “I feel happy I won the primary, now I have to go out and do it again. I’m relieved, but I know it’s not over just yet,” said Hoots. Hoots will continue on to compete against Kevin Drummond, Republican, and Rose Raulerson-Mason, Nonpartisan in the November 6 general election. Long time incumbent Janet Taylor adds another win to her political career as the 2012 County Commissioner for District #1. “I feel great, well you always feel good when you win. This election was in God’s hands. It’s about who God wants to serve his people. Now I’m going to work on getting President Obama reelected,” said Taylor. And nally the race for school board, which involved its share of confusion after the results were announced. The original information given by the Hendry County Supervisior of Elections Of ce was that whoever won the most votes in the primary election did not have to continue on to the general election -they would be the holder of the school board seat. However, after clari cation from the State Elections Of ce, according to one candidate, it was discovered that in order for that to happen a candidate must have the majority of the votes. Majority is de ned as 50 percent of votes plus one additional vote. John Perry did not receive the majority, although he received 47.93 percent of votes. “I am thrilled and elated that the people of Hendry County elected me the top vote getter and I am looking forward to the general election. I am glad to have gotten the support that I did. I am going to work hard for this election and I am working hard to get this seat,” said Perry. Stephanie Busin, Perry’s opponent, had an eventful night, learning that she had of cially lost her chance for the school board seat only to be called thirty minutes later to be told she was back in the race. “I am one of those that believes that if you have the faith of a mustard seed, you can move mountains. I was just really calm in the storm. I was surprisingly calm. I was just picking up signs when I was being inundated with calls. But I am very excited and very encouraged. This is my rookie attempt at something of this nature and to get a showing like that... I am grateful for the opportunity and am ready to move forward.” This election has a lot of meaning for Busin. She believes it is an opportunity to get on the right track to better her children’s education. “For me and my kids, we don’t have another choice. Public school is his [son Anthony who has disabilities] option. This has GOT to work for us. And we are not the only ones. I am going to work for these kids. It’s not just an east side of the county against the west side of Hendry County. We are Hendry County against the rest of the world. We lack in community and parent involvement and I believe in leading by example to make it right.” 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee A ugust 16, 2012 NEED HELP NAVIGATING MEDICARE? Tribal Council rep funneled distributions to himself, family, S.A. saysWifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Jos A. Gonzalez, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CID), announced that defendant David Roger Cypress, of Clewiston, Florida, was sentenced by United States District Judge Kathleen Williams to eighteen months’ imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release. Cypress previously pled guilty to a one count Information charging him with ling a false 2007 United States federal income tax return, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(1). According to the Information led on March 30, 2012, and other court documents led and statements made in court, Cypress was a duly elected representative for Big Cypress reservation to the governing Tribal Council of The Seminole Tribe of Florida from at least 1999 to June, 2010. In his capacity as a Tribal Council representative, Cypress had the authority to authorize distributions to Tribal members, including to himself and to his family members. Cypress admitted that while he was a Tribal Council representative, he authorized substantial distributions to be paid to or for the bene t of himself and his family members. Speci cally, Cypress received approximately $285,433 in taxable distributions from The Seminole Tribe of Florida, which he knowingly and willfully failed to report on his 2007 federal tax return. The unreported income consisted of payments made to certain vendors for personal expenses paid on his behalf. The vendors would submit vouchers requesting payment to The Seminole Tribe of Florida, which were coded to conceal the fact that Cypress was the bene ciary of the payments and falsely described the reason for payment. Cypress authorized payment of these vouchers knowing the true basis of the request for payment, and that he was to be the bene ciary of the payment. Correct copies of the vouchers were also provided by the vendors, then destroyed. In addition to his plea of guilty to the criminal charge, as part of the plea agreement Cypress agreed to pay $5,457,889 as restitution to the IRS, which includes tax, interest and penalties which the IRS has determined are due and owing by him for tax years 2003 2009 as of March 15, 2012. U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer stated, “Failure to report income to evade the payment of taxes is a crime. The U.S. Attorney’s Of ce is committed to enforcing our nation’s tax laws.” “Indian Tribal members are individually responsible for reporting and paying taxes on the bene ts and payments received from their tribes. Willful failure to le accurate income tax returns can result in severe criminal consequences,” said Jos A. Gonzalez, Special Agent in Charge o f IRS-Criminal Investigation Division, Miami Field Of ce. “Our justice system penalizes those who le fraudulent tax returns and intentionally evade paying their fair share of taxes.” Former Tribal Council Member Sentenced for Tax Fraud 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. BY PAT DOBBINS Hendry-Glades Health DepartmentOh that magical feeling of freedom when you get behind the wheel! Most teenagers can hardly wait to start driving but most parents tend to have mixed feelings. Getting teens to fully understand safety messages about driving can be a dif cult challenge for parents. Some parents may feel relieved that they don't have to always be the chauffer, but at the same time, parents worry about their teen's safety. Parents need to "practice what they preach." Teens are more likely to wear a seatbelt, follow the rules of the road, and be a calm and courteous driver if they see their parents doing the same. Teens need to remember that driving is a privilege, not a right, and not all teens are ready to drive even when the law says they can. Just because a teen has a permit, doesn't mean they are ready for every driving condition. Most crashes involving teen drivers include one of the following factors: -Distracted Driving Which includes: Texting Talking on cell phone Eating -Reckless Driving Which includes: Speeding Tailgating -Driving with teen passengers -Not using seat-belts -Driver Inexperience and weather conditions -Nighttime driving -Impaired Driving Don't drive while under the in uence of medication, alcohol, or drugs. Teen Driving Data *Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, taking the lives of eight teens a day. *In the last decade, over 68,000 teens have died in car crashes. *Sixty- ve percent of teen passenger deaths occur when another teenager is driving. The best thing a parent can do is to start teaching children at a young age about safe driving and then once the teen has a permit, let them practice-practice-practice! Ultimately, the teen will have to make decisions about their driving habits, but it's up to parents to be role models and enforce rules to encourage safe driving. Ask your insurance agent or the local department of motor vehicles for more information on teen driving. You can also visit the National Highway Traf c Safety Administration website at http://www. nhtsa.gov/Teen-Drivers/ or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website http:// www.cdc.gov/Motorvehiclesafety/Teen_Drivers/ teendrivers_factsheet.html Remember to buckle up! 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 CLEWISTON ADULT & COMMUNITY SCHOOL FALL SEMESTER 2012-2013 August 20, 2012 December 7, 2012475 E. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 10 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee August 16, 2012 The people of Clewiston have a right to read both sides to every story. After all, isn’t that what freedom of speech and true journalism is truly about? Expressing yourself and getting to the whole truth about what is happening? While the newspaper had, at one time, played an important part in the lives of many Americans, from good old fashion news to information on the weather, sports, or even obituaries and weddings, it has now become a political avenue of misconstrued facts. The last article, posted on the front page no less, “Hendry County Looks at New Administration Assistant,” gave a whole new meaning to the phrase, “liar, liar pants on re!” In the article Mr. Murphy tried desperately to defend his poor judgement when it came to hiring, what was then an assistant principal for our elementary schools and later conveniently became “Administrative Assistant” to t his political agenda and cover up his poor choice. What bothers the people of Clewiston the most is the fact that he blatantly disregarded the fact that, he did not use his “targeted selection” of objective interviewers for those interviews. He used the same husband and wife tag team that lied to the parents of Clewiston not allowing them to transfer their children from one school to the next (which by the way was so unethical since parents do have the right for school of choice). He did not consider the many other candidates that were not only highly quali ed, but had evidence proving their classroom effectiveness and even their leadership skills and have given many more years of faithful service to the students of Hendry County. He did not consider the fact that Ms. Whitehead had to leave the high school because at the time when she was teaching your children she was not certi ed in that particular area of study and was teaching your children “out of eld.” He did not consider the fact that in this time and age, of accountability, the state has asked for the schools to only hire highly quali ed staff and especially leaders. People are upset because he has not even considered giving the hard working teachers of Clewiston a raise, yet he gave himself a raise. People are upset because all he talks about is the budget, but fails to mention what really matters: Education. People are upset because he overlooked the fact that the district had to pay off a certain teacher due to his inappropriate behaviors. People are upset because yes, “he is so nice,” yet he only looks after himself keeping odd hours of work and really not being available when push comes to shove. Not to mention that he has been caught campaigning during his hours of work when he should be helping to improve the schools! If Mr. Murphy stated he had, “the right to hire whoever he wanted,” that’s ne, then we the people of Clewiston have the right to say, “please, educate yourself on what makes a district highly successful, educate yourself on what it means to be highly quali ed, educate yourself on ‘race to the top’ and stop lying to your community.” If you wanted to hire Ms. Whitehead, even though she did not possess the quali cations, that’s ne, then say it, but do not lie and try to make it seem like no one else was highly quali ed. The people of Clewiston are tired of the lies!Submitted by Lilianne Sullivan OpinionLetter to the Editor: Liar, Liar may have vertical stripes or horizontal stripes but, graphic designs or pictures are not allowed. A school t-shirt may be worn on any school day. Shirts and blouses must be tucked in at all times, so please make sure garments are long enough to be tucked in. Slacks, Shorts, Jumpers, Dresses, and Skirts: Any pants, jeans, or shorts. No tears, rips, or holes. No sweatpants or leggings are to be worn. Pants must t at the waist – No baggy styles or drop pants. Shoes: Sneakers are recommended, but any shoes with closed toe and closed heel are acceptable. The dress code will be enforced consistently this school year. Parents will be contacted and asked to bring in appropriate clothes if their child is out of compliance. Students who consistently defy the dress code will face disciplinary action. School Grade Central Elementary School received its rst ever A grade from the Florida Department of Education! This grade was in recognition of all the hard work by students, teachers, staff, and for the leadership of Mr. Duckstein and the rest of the leadership team. We attribute our A to the fact that in the last few years, the teachers and administration at Central have focused on data analysis. This is the process of analyzing student test scores to determine exact strengths and weaknesses in their academic skills. Through this complex process, teachers were able to identify areas of concern and build curriculum to enhance their students' skills. Teachers then worked with these students in small group for skill development. Open House We want to remind all parents that our Open House is Thursday, Aug. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet the teachers and hear all about the upcoming year. Parents can also nd out about classroom supply lists, speci cs about the dress code, and academic goals. A member of the county's food services staff will also be on hand to distribute free and reduced lunch forms. These must be completed and returned as quickly as possible so as to avoid an interruption to your son/daughter's lunch status. Central t-shirts will also be on sale so please plan to purchase your shirt and show your school spirit. The Open House is also a perfect time for parents to become a member of our Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO works closely with the school in planning activities for our students throughout the school year. We would love to see all of our parents as active PTO members. New Hires Every year Central is in need of new teachers. This year we feel we have done exceptionally well with our new hires. Some are coming from as far as New Jersey, Indiana, and Wisconsin and others are locals from Clewiston, LaBelle, and Pahokee. In pre-kindergarten we have Courtney Ensor-Acevedo, in kindergarten Aarika Deerey and Kristina Dell, in rst grade Siria Aguayo, and nally in third grade we'll have Brooke Barnes and Debbie Larrimore. We look forward to working with these teachers as a part of our Central Elementary School family. Please be sure to give them a great big Central welcome when you get the chance. Finally, Central Elementary School staff is excited about welcoming our new Principal, Jose Roquett. Students and parents from Clewiston Middle School and Clewiston High School may remember Mr. Roquett for his excellent service in both of these schools. Mr. Roquett comes to us from West Glades Elementary School in Glades County, where he served as Assistant Principal. We are looking forward to working with our parents and students to make this the most rewarding year yet for our students and for your children. We stand ready to serve so please feel free to call or write with any suggestions, questions, or concerns. Our of ce number is 983-1550. The winner of the $500 was Mr. Ron Buff. Silver Saddles Co-leader Kelsie Hansen is pictured with Mr. Buff. The East Coast Technical Assistance Center, which is a collaborative network of thirty Florida school districts, has selected Clewiston High School as an “Exceeding Expectations Award School.” The award was given due to increased student performance of student achievement on the FCAT for years 2009-2011, as well as site visits by ECTAC personnel to review programs at Clewiston High School. Principal Janice Lee has been invited to ECTAC’s Exceeding Expectations Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida on Sept. 12 where she will receive the award as Clewiston High School is honored as an “Exceeding Expectations Award School.” The East Coast Technical Assistance Center is an educational organization in Florida that provides technical assistance to school districts and schools in Florida, especially those with high poverty rates. ECTAC provides consultative services for school districts in their efforts to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and signi cant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and to provide students with the skills needed for pro ciency on challenging state and academic achievement standards as well as state academic assessments. Criteria which ECTAC used to award Clewiston High this honor included a review of leadership, instructional strategies, practices and programs, high expectations of staff and students, use of data and monitoring of student progress, family and community engagement, professional development, school culture and climate, use of technology, and student academic performance. Clewiston High School Selected As An Exceeding Expectations Award School The Florida Department of Education has released School Grades for Elementary and Middle Schools across the state. In order to better prepare students for college and careers, the state has been moving to higher academic standards, new assessments that measure students’ progress toward meeting the standards, and higher achievement levels for reading, math, science and writing. These new standards, assessments, and achievement levels were used to determine school grades this year. According to Gerard Robinson, Florida’s Commissioner of Education, the combination of changes to Florida’s accountability system has caused a temporary drop in some school grades. This does not necessarily mean that the schools, teachers, or students are not doing as well as they were before. The tougher standards and new cut scores raised the bar. These changes also makes it dif cult to compare scoring from previous years to the current scores. This can best be thought of as a transitional year for school grades. Statewide in 2012, there were 2,513 graded elementary and middle schools that also received grades in 2011. Of these schools: 237 increased their school grade 1,291 received the same school grade 985 dropped one school grade Below are school grades for Hendry County School District Elementary and Middle Schools for 2011 and 2012:2012 2011Westside Elem. The Hendry County School District received an overall district grade of C, unchanged from 2011. Richard Murphy, Superintendent of Schools states, and the Hendry County School Board will continue to work to provide our schools and teachers the resources they need to ensure that the students of Hendry County are provided the opportunity to be successful In school. Staff will use this year’s school grades data to help plan improvement and too increase student achievement In all schools across the district. PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI never thought that I would admit to being the father of an animal, but Pepper changed all of that. Pepper is my four-legged child who waits expectantly for me to get home each night and excitedly wags her tail and whimpers with delight when I walk in. You can imagine how excited she was when I came home after being gone for two weeks! Words aren’t adequate to describe the reception I received. One of my goals in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am. What is it about dogs that evokes such an enthusiastic outreach? Whatever it is, we know that dogs demonstrate loyalty and obedience, and offer comfort and a sense of well-being. They love us in spite of our shortcomings. Could you imagine what it would be like if we were to have the kind of outreach in our churches, homes, schools, and communities that most dogs have? Let me challenge you to “paws” for re ection on ten ways we can be more Godly in our lives by being more “dogly.” 1. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Greet friends and loved ones with a wagging tail. The wagging tail af rms that we are happy to see them and they are loved and welcomed. The reason dogs have so many friends is because they wag their tails and not their tongues. 2. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride. Run, frolic, and play daily. Exercise is as important for our souls as it is for our bodies. When we learn how to play and run around and get in some exercise as well, we’ll feel better inside and out. 3. When you’re happy, dance and spin around and wag your tail. Celebration is a powerful dynamic for abundant and joyful living, and is a gift we can give ourselves. 4. Be loyal to a fault. Stick close to those you love most. 5. If someone is not having a good day, sit close by and nuzzle gently. We all have bad days, and we all need encouragement and af rmations. When we are depressed, we know that takes only a quiet word and/or a gentle touch to bring us around. Words are not always needed. There is power in presence. A gentle nuzzle speaks volumes. 6. If what you want lies buried, dig until you nd it. 7. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. Relax, slow down, and enjoy. Unplug and give yourself a time out. 8. No matter how harshly you might be yelled at or scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout. Be willing to run back and make friends. Don’t keep a scorecard of rights and wrongs. Carrying grudges is a heavy burden. We would do well to forgive and forget. 9. When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience. Never pretend to be something you’re not. 10. Bark with your buddies. Occasionally running with the pack builds and af rms friendships. Friends are important in our life. A friend is someone who knows the song in our heart and can sing it back to us when we have forgotten the words. Closing thought: “Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.” -Robert Heinlein. A petition that does not dispute the material facts on which the Department’s action is based shall state that no such facts are in dispute and otherwise shall contain the same information as set forth above, as required by Rule 28-106.301, F.A.C. Because the administrative hearing process is designed to formulate nal agency action, the ling of a petition means that the Department’s nal action may be different from the position taken by it in this notice. BEVIS Deputy Clerk 423966 CN 8/16,23/2012 18 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee August 16, 2012 Public Notice Public Notice Whether it’s to help beautify their neighborhoods, foster a sense of community or to grow their own vegetables and fruits, more Americans are starting local community gardens. According to the latest U.S. government statistics, more than 23 million Americans, including 6.5 million children, live more than a mile away from a supermarket. Whether your community is considered a “food desert” or not, starting a community garden is a great way to get active, improve health, promote nutrition education, and nurture great neighbor relations. Here are some tips to get started on your garden: Talk to neighbors to see if there is wide enough interest and to nd partners to help you organize. Create task-based committees and assign active, responsible community members to lead them. Find a level, sunny site for your garden with convenient water access. A test can determine if your soil has the proper nutrients and is free of heavy metals. Be sure you have a written agreement with the landowner. Approach local businesses for supply donations. Hardware stores and lumber suppliers are a great place to start. Use a democratic process to make important decisions, such as what gardening tasks will happen cooperatively, how much member dues will be and how often they will be collected, and whether the garden will be organic. Plan the garden, mapping out plots. Shared spaces should include a tool shed, a water fountain, a shady area for gardeners to relax and a composting area. Create a set of rules and have all gardeners sign an agreement to follow them. Post yers, talk to your children’s teachers and principal, and inform the local press of what you’re doing. Empower gardeners and the greater community with knowledge. Plan workshops focused on gardening techniques, nutrition, and cooking. Get children involved with programming geared speci cally to younger audiences. You can get inspired by what others are already doing. For example, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a global humanitarian organization, is helping refugees become self-suf cient and contribute to their new home in the United States through community gardening, nutrition education and small business farming. With training, tools and land provided by the IRC’s New Roots program, refugees are sharing their agricultural skills and producing affordable, locally grown vegetables and fruit for their families and neighbors. “Community gardens are a win-win situation, creating trust and dialogue among local residents and establishing a healthier, localized food system that bene ts everyone,” says Ellee Igoe, the IRC’s technical advisor for U.S. food and agriculture programs. Learn more about IRC’s efforts and ho w to do great things for your community at www.Rescue.org. As more Americans are substituting highlyprocessed junk food for whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, experts warn that diets lacking essential vitamins and nutrients are contributing to escalating rates of health problems like diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Think beyond your own backyard. With a garden, you can help make your neighborhood a healthier, happier place. How to Start a Community GardenQuick and simple tips for creating a living garden that will delight and impress throughout the entire year “Community gardens are a win-win situation, creating trust and dialogue among local residents and establishing a healthier, localized food system that bene ts everyone.”— Ellee Igoe
