A trip out on the water with friends turns tragicBY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comThree Okeechobee men took out two 15-foot Combee airboats Thursday morning looking for a nice day out on the swampy marsh of STA5, located just west of the Rotenberger Wildlife Management Area in Hendry County. But before it even reached noon, their fun came to an abrupt stop when their airboats collided resulting in serious injuries and a fatality. According to Carli Segelson, public information coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Vessel One was in the lead, driven by Joshua Yates, 23, while Vessel Two was following, carrying Richard Ramsey, 20, and Mark Joiner, 23. Vessel One swayed off of the trial, losing Vessel Two. Noticing that his friends were nowhere in sight, Yates slowed down to scout the area. He spotted them; heading straight for the starboard area (the right side) of his airboat. One of Walmart’s own employees was seen on video surveillance stealingBY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comOne of Walmart’s own employees was arrested this week on charges of theft. The Clewiston Police Department was dispatched to the Clewiston Walmart, May 25, in reference to a theft that had already happened. Eric Ferguson, Loss Prevention Agent at Walmart, spoke with Of cer Baker, stating that he watched a video of an employee stealing a laptop computer. D’eandrea Ellison allegedy took the computer from the claims department and concealed it in a rolling rack. Ellison then returned with a red backpack and stashed the laptop in the bag, then making his way to the employee break room. Ferguson reported that Ellison returned to the staff lounge, grabbed the back pack from his locker, and exited Walmart, bypassing all registers and reportedly making no attempt to pay for the merchandise. The incident occurred on May 7. According the the of cial offense report, Of cer Baker confronted Ellison, who was brought into the Loss Prevention Of ce by management. Ellison told Baker that he observed the laptop sitting outside of the claims department. He confessed that the computer would not t into the backpack he originally brought to work with him so he purchased a bigger backpack to stow away the laptop. Ellison said he grabbed the backpack containing the laptop and left the store when his shift was over. He told of cers that he also took a Nook Color valued at $169, a Kindle Fire valued at $199, and a DVD valued at $14.96. He even went as far to tell the of cer that he would take the select items to the bathroom, open the packages, wrap the merchandise in toliet paper, and then hide them in his backpack until he got off of work, which from there he would exit the store with them. As a representative for Walmart, Ferguson pressed charges on Ellison. Ellison was placed under arrest for theft more than $300 but less than $5000. V. LOCAL THIRD GRADERS FARE WELL AGAINST NEXT GENERATION FCAT STANDARDSBY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comParents and school administrators have been eagerly awaiting the new FCAT 2.0 scores for Hendry County Schools. With the results being released last week, some illuminating information has surfaced about the performance of local third graders on the reading portion of the FCAT. Jumping to a new standard for most people in the education eld meant that there would be some uncertainty as to how well local schools would perform. Of special note was the reading portion, since the new standards required that students score at least a Level 2 on reading to be eligible for promotion to the fourth grade. Although the new grading system is more stringent, data shows some promising gures for schools in Hendry County. So how did the local third grade population manage this new generation of standards? The reading portion of the FCAT is graded on a scale from one through ve. Statewide gures showed a slight drop in scores for reading, with 56 percent of all students achieving a score of 3 or higher on the test. Most schools in the county fared worse Promising Results for Reading FCAT 2.0 Airboat Accident Kills One, Injures One Walmart Employee Accused of Shopliftin g SEE FCAT 16 Clewiston Honors Memorial Day

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 31, 2012 BY GABE MARGASAK SFWMDWith the start of South Florida’s wet season, rainfall alone is beginning to quench the needs of most lawns and landscapes. This means irrigation system timers at homes and businesses in the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) can be dialed back to fewer days, shorter watering times or shut off altogether to conserve water for the future. Irrigation system timers are often set for the dry winter months and forgotten, leading to sprinkling even during typical wet-season downpours. During an average wet season, from June through October, many lawns receive what they require and don’t need supplemental irrigation at all, according to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Adjusting timers can make a difference because outdoor irrigation accounts for up to 50 percent of water use in South Florida, and up to 50 percent of the water applied to lawns is lost to evapotranspiration. Installing rain sensors or soil moisture sensors to automatically shut off an irrigation system when enough rain has fallen and checking the pipes and sprinkler heads for leaks are also key conservation tools. In addition, residents can conserve water and still enjoy a tropical landscape by following Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles. These include planting the right plant in the right place, utilizing mulch, and reducing storm water runoff. More information is available at www. oridayards.org. Because water conservation offers signi cant bene ts, the SFWMD Governing Board in September 2008 approved a Comprehensive Water Conservation Program to encourage more responsible use of water resources throughout South Florida. Numerous stakeholders worked with the District to de ne speci c regulatory, voluntary, and incentive-based programs and in-depth education and marketing efforts that help to foster a year-round conservation ethic. Simple water conservation practices include: Washing only full loads of clothes and dishes; Replacing aerators in kitchen and bathroom sinks with models rated for 1.5 gallons per minute or less; Installing lowow appliances, such as a dishwasher or energy-ef cient washing machine; Installing lowow water xtures, such as shower heads with the WaterSense logo. While reducing irrigation time during the wet season is encouraged, residents and businesses remain under the District’s Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Rule that limits residential and business landscape irrigation to two or three days per week based on location. To determine watering days and times in your area, contact your local government or visit www.sfwmd.gov/2days. Wet Season Start: It’s Time to Reset Irrigation Timers SUBMITTED PHOTO

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 31, 2012 Florida Governor Rick Scott proclaimed May 20-26, as Florida Water Reuse Week to bring awareness of the importance of water reuse to meeting Florida’s future water supply needs. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection urges Florida’s residents and businesses to celebrate Water Reuse Week to learn more about how easy it is to reuse water on a daily basis. “DEP is committed to working with the Florida’s water management districts, communities and businesses to ensure the environment is protected and future water supply needs are met,” said Greg Munson, DEP Deputy Secretary for Water Policy and Ecosystem Restoration. “DEP strives to get the water right and reuse efforts can make a positive impact to both water supply and protecting our natural resources.” Leading the nation in water reuse, the state of Florida reuses more than 660 million gallons of reclaimed water each day to conserve freshwater supplies and replenish rivers, streams, lakes and the aquifers. Reclaimed water is often seen in landscaping, agriculture and golf courses, the use of which drastically cuts down on fresh water use. Florida uses reclaimed water to irrigate more than 280,000 residences, 500 golf courses and hundreds more parks and schools. Florida residents use more than 6 billion gallons of fresh water daily, while producing billions of gallons of wastewater through daily activities such as showers, laundry and dishwashing. With simple actions to reuse water, Floridians can augment Florida’s water resources and allow traditional sources of fresh water to be conserved. Saving water also translates to saving money on lower utility bills. During Water Reuse Week and throughout the year, DEP also encourages residents to undertake water reuse and conservation practices to help to ensure safe, clean, and sustainable water resources: Collect rain water in buckets during storms which can be reused for irrigating yards, cleaning driveways and toilet ushing. Before emptying a pet’s drinking bowl, use the un nished or old water to water plants. Plant a rain garden that will capture excess stormwater runoff, limit topsoil erosion, reduce ooding, and enhance yard beauty. Take excess water from a bath or from washing dishes and put into the toilet for ushing. Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan, not under a running faucet, and reuse that water for gardening. Use a commercial car wash that recycles water. For more water reuse tips, such as how to plant a rain garden or build a rain barrel please visit www.protectingourwater.org. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonWhat large black woodpecker the size of a crow has bold white stripes down the neck and a aming-red triangular crest? The correct answer is Pileated Woodpecker. This bird species lives and breeds in most of Florida. They are often heard whacking at dead trees or fallen logs in search of food. Pileated Woodpeckers have long barbed tongues that can be more than an inch long which they use to extract woodboring beetle larv ae, ants, termites, or other insects that are deep in wood. Nuts and fruit as well as bird seed or suet found in backyard feeders are often part of their diet. These birds have a large body, skinny tail, and long neck. Adult males have a red stripe on their cheek. Their white underwings and white crescents on the wings can be seen when they are in ight. Their call is a short loud clear "wuk wuk" or "cuk cuk" sound. The oldest known Pileated Woodpecker was 12 years and 11 months old. Pileated Woodpeckers have long chisel-like bills about the length of their heads. When hammering in soft wood with their beaks, they will pull their neck back while using their feet to increase the strength of powerful blows they make in the soft wood. Both sexes drum on trees. Males will drum in late winter to establish or defend their territory. Both sexes drum during courtship, to summon a mate from a distance, or when an intruder is near the nest. Pairs stay in the same territory year-round and form permanent bonds. When one dies the survivor might nd a new mate. The pair will make the nest cavity. The male does most of the work excavating the cavity up high in a dead tree or utility pole, but the female will help. The entrance is oblong instead of round like most woodpecker holes. They will line the nest with leftover wood chips. Females will lay three to ve white eggs between mid-March and mid-May which are incubated for 14 to 18 days. The young leave the nest cavity when they are 24 to 28 days old. For an incredible close video of the Pileated Woodpecker go to Cornell's "All About Birds Guide" at www.allaboutbirds.org/guide. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for free birding trips to STA5 located 20 miles south of Clewiston on June 16, July 14 or Aug. 18. The vision of the founding members was to develop a network in which vital information about emerging crime trends, critical intelligence information, and educational and training issues could be shared. The other part of the vision was to create a process by which those involved in this career eld would be recognized as professionals. This year, start and end the week's festivities by taking advantage of one of Florida's license-free shing days. Saltwater recreational anglers can sh without a license on June 2 and freshwater recreational shers on June 9. There couldn't be a better time to get out on the water and try your hand at some of Florida's ne shing on these two Saturdays. Thirty-four states, including Florida and Georgia, will have license-free shing days during the J une 2 through June 10 National Fishing and Boating Week, a celebration of shing and boating. "Florida's license-free shing days are an excellent opportunity to share the fun, excitement and togetherness of a shing trip with the entire family. This also is a great time for experienced anglers to introduce friends to the sport, even if they don't have a shing license," said Nick Wiley, FWC executive director. "By having these events on weekends, we hope Florida residents and visitors will experience the joy of saltwater and freshwater shing. We expect many will discover a healthy sport they can enjoy for a lifetime." Saltwater anglers can try their hand at catching a red snapper, which will be open for harvest in Gulf and Atlantic state waters and Gulf federal waters on the June 2, saltwater license-free shing day. Want to stick a little closer to shore? Try your hand at near-shore species such as spotted seatrout or red drum. Now that school is out or almost out and people are in vacation mode, anglers will nd June a great time to introduce a child to shing or encourage a friend who hasn't been shing for a while to get on the water. Almost everyone in Florida is within 45 minutes of a freshwater shing hole. Dawn or dusk may be your best shing times, but if you go midday, seek out the shadows around piers or fallen trees, or look for bass and bream under oating vegetation mats and in other shaded areas to enhance your success. Fishing is a low-cost, wholesome form of entertainment, which is why the FWC offers four days when a recreational shing license is not needed. Can't make the June 2 or June 9 licensefree shing days? The FWC also made Sept. 1 a license-free saltwater shing day, which not only falls on a holiday weekend, but is during the popular bay scallop and spiny lobster seasons. Each year, the rst Saturday in April and second Saturday in June will be license-free freshwater shing days. The state's abundant resources, coupled with responsible freshwater and saltwater sh management, are why Florida is known as the "Fishing Capital of the World." All other bag limit, season and size restrictions apply on these dates. To make your shing day successful, chec k out MyFWC.com/Fishing for shing tips, locations and rules. Strickland Supervisor of Elections Hendry County, Florida 16 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 31, 2012 than the gure, with only one school posting a higher percentage of students showing mastery of the reading section of the test. Eastside Elementary School posted exceptional results. Only seven percent of third graders there scored a one on the FCAT. Sixtyseven percent of third graders passed with a three or higher. Statewide, only 18 percent of students received the lowest possible score for reading. In the county, only Eastside and Country Oaks Elementary in LaBelle had a smaller percentage of students scoring a Level 1. Country Oaks Elementary School had 13 percent of students score a Level 1, while 54 percent earned a three or higher. Edward A. Upthegrove Elementary showed 20 percent of students with a Level 1. However, 50 percent of their third graders scored a three or higher to pass to the fourth grade. Clewiston’s Westside Elementary saw 24 percent of third graders scoring a Level 1 the FCAT for 2012. Fifty percent of students passed the FCAT with a three or above. Of particular note, Westside also shows the highest percentage of students in the county who scored a Level 5, with 12 percent reaching that metric. Central Elementary School saw 36 percent of third graders earning a one on the 2012 FCAT. Thirty-three percent of their third graders scored a three or higher. None of the third graders attending Central made a ve on their FCAT, the only school in the county to post zero earnings for that achievement level. Even with Central Elementary posting a higher percentage of Level 1 achievements for Clewiston Schools, it is not the highest for Hendry County. Labelle Elementary School had 41 percent of their students score a one putting nearly half of all students at that school at risk for being held back. Only 24 percent of LaBelle Elementary students scored a three or higher. Part of the challenge for schools in the rural Hendry County area is the high number of minority, English language learners and special needs students who traditionally struggle on assessment tests. Happy that her school fared most favorably on the FCAT, Lori Duckstein, Eastside principal, was asked how her school overcame the challenges. "Every child will succeed when you have high expectations," Ms. Duckstein said. "The students will rise to meet the standards." Last December, the State Board of Education set higher achievement levels for the FCAT 2.0 Reading and Mathematics. This has been the rst time the Board of Education has raised the FCAT standards in ten years. According to the Florida Department of Education, the "curriculum standards were adopted to help ensure students are being adequately prepared for college and today's competitive job market." Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said the results help determine how and where resources should be focused so students struggling with reading get the extra help they need. "Whether we're preparing a child for college, career training or the workplace, they must have the fundamentals of reading to be successful," said Robinson. As the grading standard is now more rigorous and the test more challenging, students' scores appeared to have gone down since 2011. However, the third grade is on-point for data predictions of this year's test results, according to the Florida Department of Education. FCATContinued 1 On May 26, Saturday morning, Post 4185 veterans, members of both VFW auxiliaries, and the Boy Scouts of Troop 619 gathered to honor the fallen by placing ags in Clewiston's local cemeteries. When they were nished, there were almost 400 ags waving as witness to the sacri ces of local brave men and women. It was a bittersweet sight, lling the hearts of those in attendance with gratitude and pride. The Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank the more than 30 volunteers for helping. Many of the members attended a service presented at Ridgelawn Cemetery on Memorial Day morning. It was a very heartfelt ceremony as one youth after another did their part, showing honor, pride, understanding, and dignity to all veterans. Once again the Ladies Auxiliary commends and thank all for their service in presenting this to the community. A very special thanks was made to Kristine Peterson for organizing the ceremony. An open workshop meeting to organize a "back to school" fund raiser will be held on Thursday, June 7, starting at 6 p.m. at VFW Post 4185 Hall. This is intended to be a community service project to raise funds to purchase classroom supplies. The group welcome the community to attend and take part. Auxiliary Happenings In what seems like an attempt to escape the incoming danger, Yates accelerated, but the airboats collided at approximately 11:30 a.m. It is currently unknown how fast the airboats were traveling. Richard Ramsey and Mark Joiner, were ejected from their vessel. FWC responded to the accident. When they arrived, Ramsey was pronounced dead at the scene. Joiner was in critical condition and was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital. Yates, however, was unscathed and needed no medical attention. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, with FWC of cials unable to say what the men were doing out in the area, or if any other factors were at play to cause the accident.
