Clewiston High School’s beloved “Coach Lee” says this is his last yearBY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comAfter dedicating 27 years of his life coaching basketball at Clewiston High School, Willie Lee has decided it is time to retire. Mr. Lee discovered his passion at CHS in 1976 when he signed up to play basketball. He played each year through to his senior year in 1980. But he wasn’t ready for his sports career to end. He began coaching young athletes at CHS in 1985 at 22 years old. He coached the JV team from 1985 to 1988 and the Varsity team from 1988 to 2012. Throughout his time as a coach, Lee and his teams have had great seasons and memorable accomplishments. Beginning at the district level, Lee and his boys have won six district championships, proudly on display in the CHS trophy cases. As a player, Lee went to the Final Four, state high school basketball tournament, with his team in 1980. They made it to the seminals for class 2A. He was ecstatic to bring his own team to the very same competiMan smuggles lighter into holding facility, sets wall on reBY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA jzaragoza@newszap.comA man being held on charges of reckless driving made another mistake while being held inside of a holding facility at the Clewiston Police Department. Perhaps upset that he was not allowed to simply go on his way, the man apparently set one of the cell walls on re. He earned a couple of new charges for the act. David Lockmiller was charged with arson, a rst degree felony, and smuggling contraband, a third degree felony. The incident happened on May 14, at approximately 1:13 a.m., reports the Clewiston Police Department. Of cers were called in to the police department’s holding facility with information that the suspect had lit the cell on re. According to the report, the man had somehow managed to smuggle a lighter into the facility. Of cers used a re extinguisher to put the ames out and recovered the lighter from the man’s front shirt pocket. BY JESSICA SCHULTZ jschultz@newszap.comJust before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, 22-year-old Hermelinda Ramirez was driving home with her two-yearold son, Alex Perez-Ramirez, when she got into an accident. Her 2001 Ford Explorer overturned into a canal, according to Florida Highway Patrol. She was heading east on El Paso Avenue, approaching San Diego Street, when her vehicle traveled off the shoulder. The passenger side lled with water, drowning Alex. He was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m. at Hendry Regional Medical Center. The mother was reported with serious injuries and transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. She was released earlier this week. Investigators were unable to determine if the child was properly restrained inside of the vehicle, although the mother was wearing her seat belt. Alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash. The news that the crash may have been the result of alcohol created some outrage in the community regarding the suspected cause. Attempts to contact the mother were unsuccessful, but friends who knew her reported a disturbing picture of the household. One item of particular concern reported that the mother was also pregnant during the time of the accident -although this could not be independently veri ed by of cials. Florida Highway Patrol of cials reported that charges were pending in the case. Captain King says Lake O shing, Keys shing great this time of yearBY MARK KINGWhat a spring it has been here in South Florida with the bass shing on Lake Okeechobee being awesome and the tarpon shing in the Keys being just as good. I have been pretty busy wearing both hats. I know that I haven't sent out a shing report for a few weeks and wanted to let everyone know that the bass and tarpon are really biting here in Florida. First thing I want to talk about is Lake Okeechobee and the water level starting to get low. It is at 11.56 feet above sea level and dropping more each day. But the good thing is that the bass are still biting and the arti cial bite has been as good as the live bait bite has been using wild shiners. My guide clients are catching some really nice bass up to nine pounds, and the numbers of bass being caught are still great for the water getting low and the summer time heat starting to get pretty warm. I have been shing mostly the shoal but have wandered down south toward Kramer Island, and have also done pretty well there too. The bass are moving out toward the main lake with the water level going down; this means that most all of the points have bass stacked up on them. The bass have also moved out into the eel grass on the shoal. Catching the bass on topwater early in the morning and then using Charlie's Worms Zipper Dipper swimbaits the rest on the day has been my best method for catching some nice bass. I have also been doing pretty well on a big jig and craw trailer. For shing in this eel grass, a heavy action rod and at least 50-pound braided line is a must. For shing the jig in the reeds and bulrush I have been using an extra heavy 7' 11" Okuma rod. I have been catching a few bass on a bluegill colored wake bait by swimming it around the bluegill beds, but you need to make long casts so as not to scare these bass in this shallow clear water. Speaking of bluegill, I have never seen so many beds as I have seen the past couple weeks in areas like the shoal, West Wall, East Wall, and both sides of Ritta Island. If you want to catch some monster bluegill then Lake Okeechobee is the place to be right now. Now on to one of my favorite sh, the giant tarpon and the Florida Keys is the place to be if you want to do battle with one of these magni cent sh. I have been doing a good number of charters here the past month in the Keys and the shing has been great with a good number of hook ups and quite a few sh making it to the boat for pictures and measuring. I have been shing from Grassy Key area to the Bahia Honda Bridge and seeing a lot of tarpon everywhere. I have been using mostly crabs and pin sh for bait, but if you can get them, mullet work great. I use a pretty heavy action rod and reel spooled with fty pound test braided line, an eighty pound test uorocarbon leader and usually a 7/0 circle hook. Drifting the live bait with the current works best and the more the tide is ushing bait through the bridges the better the shing is. If you have never been to the Florida Keys to sh for tarpon or to just enjoy the tropical atmosphere then let me recommend it to anyone who needs a stress relief. I also have my 20' Key Hopper ats boat for sale if anyone is looking for a great ats boat just contact me for details. Until next report good luck, tight lines, and hope to see everyone on the water soon. University of Florida honeybee researcher Jamie Ellis is interested in what happens to bees that encounter chemicals and Varroa mites — but he’s even more interested in how younger bees fare long-term after facing those challenges. Scientists have been trying to explain the bee-killing malady known as Colony Collapse Disorder, which causes honeybees to abandon their hives, become ill and die. Ellis’ lab has been studying how combinations of environmental factors — chemicals, pathogens, natural enemies — affect bees. Since widespread honeybee die-offs began to be reported around the U.S. in 2006, researchers have been working to pin down a cause. Bee pollination is critical for much of the food we eat and some estimates suggest the U.S. bee industry is responsible for pollinating as much as $15 billion worth of crops every year. In the Ellis lab’s most recent study, outlined recently in the Journal of Insect Physiology, researchers reared honey bees from young larvae to the pupal stage. The UF researchers then exposed the immature bees to a variety of chemicals used in agriculture and beekeeping, including two fungicides, two herbicides and ve insecticides. They also exposed them to Varroa mites, which weaken bee colonies. During the experiment, a control group of bees wasn’t exposed to anything, others were exposed only to the chemicals, or only to mites, and some of the bees were exposed to a combination of chemicals and mites. The researchers gauged the effects on larvae by analyzing the activity of about 50 genes associated with stress, immune response and bee development. Ellis, an assistant professor of entomology in UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, stressed that the scientists were only able to screen for expression in some — but not all — genes. They had expected that exposing the bees to the combination of mites and chemicals might produce a more pronounced negative impact, but they didn’t nd any. But their results did suggest, among other things, that two common fungicides — chemicals used to protect crops from fungal infections — apparently have more in uence on bees than previously believed. By examining the selected genes, researchers found the fungicides had pronounced effects on the larvae, although they are generally considered non-toxic to bees. “The data suggest that fungicides are not innocuous to bees,” he said. Ellis’ next study will go much further, with scientists preparing to raise the bees from larvae to adulthood, labeling and following each individual bee. “In most studies, investigators treat a eld with a product, put bee colonies adjacent to the eld and then sample whole colony strength after pesticide exposure. At the end of the day, all you are able to say is ‘this colony is responding in this way to the eld treatment.’ You don’t know why it’s responding in that way. When we begin to label bees, it will permit us to investigate an area that has yet to be studied. We’ll be able to follow individual bees throughout their entire lives, thus allowing us to determine long-term impacts of pesticides on bees.” Besides Ellis, the research team members included former UF postdoctoral research fellow Aleš Gregorc; Michael Scharf, a former UF entomologist and now the O. Wayne Rollins/Orkin Endowed Chair in Urban Entomology at Purdue University, and Jay D. Evans, research entomologist with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Md. The study was funded by the National Honey Board, the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. Farm Theft deterrent practices: 1) Don’t keep excess fuel in tanks when pumps are not being used. 2) Keep gates and fuel tanks locked. 3) Do not to set fuel pumps or tanks in areas which are in close proximity of public access/ gates or where they can be seen from the roadway. 4) Don’t store excess chemicals on the farm, try to only order what is needed on a daily basis and reorder as necessary. 5) Educate employees to record tag number of suspicious vehicles on property. 6) Set up video cameras or game camera’s on chemical sheds, fuel storage areas and workshops, etc. 7) Measure and record fuel tank levels/ amounts before/after fuel deliveries. It’s just good business practices to con rm delivery amounts. 8) Contact Law Enforcement on all suspicious incidents, no matter how small. It helps us develop intelligence needed to apprehend the criminal. 9) Develop an “owner applied number” system for your assets over a certain dollar value (ex: engrave or stamp the # on equipment with a value of $300, or whatever value you choose). 10) Take photos of your equipment with a certain dollar value (evidence for law enforcement to help recover and return stolen goods to the rightful owner). 11) Conduct Ag meetings with local law enforcement periodically monthly, quarterly. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Red-headed Woodpecker is a strikingly tri-colored bird that is found in deciduous woodlands in the eastern United States. These birds are considered “near-threatened” because of the decline in their population over much of their breeding range. They are a partially migratory woodpecker with a somewhat patchy distribution, but they are occasionally reported living and breeding in inland Florida. The bright red hood that covers the entire head and neck of the adult Red-headed Woodpecker makes it easy to identify at rest or in ight. Adults have a black back, tail and wings with white underparts and white secondary wing feathers. Juveniles have a gray-brown head and black bars on white secondary feathers. Immature birds will have some red in the head. Their call is a loud “tchur-tchur”. Red-headed Woodpeckers nest in dead trees or dead branches, preferring well-weathered snags in pastures and open woods, as well as parks and open urban and rural habitats. These birds will move into areas where land has been recently burned or cleared. They will attack other birds to keep them out of their territory and are known to remove the eggs of other species from nests and nest boxes. Red-headed Woodpeckers will store food and is the only woodpecker species known to cover stored food with wood or bark. Insects and seeds are hidden in cracks in wood, under bark, in fence posts and under roof shingles. They have a habit of perching on a branch, “hawking” for insects which they catch in ight or on roadways. These birds will occasionally visit bird feeders. Nesting occurs annually from May to September where they normally raise one brood. The nesting cavity located ve to 80 feet above ground takes six to 17 days to excavate. Both parents incubate the four to seven white eggs, which hatch in 12 to 14 days. The young stay in the cavity, depending on their parents for food, until they edge at about 25 days of age. For more information about the Red-headed Woodpecker and other Florida breeding bird visit “FWC’s Breeding Bird Atlas” at http://legacy.myfwc.com/bba/species.asp. Margaret England Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 7.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.53/g on Sunday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.70/g. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices Sunday were 27.4 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 33.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 15.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 13.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “With Memorial Day a week away, it’s time to put to bed an old myth that gasoline prices rise ahead of a major holiday,” said GasBuddy. com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “Average gasoline prices will likely continue to decline in the days ahead of Memorial Day, but folks will still say come next year that prices went up over the weekend this year. It’s a sign of how sensitive motorists become to gasoline prices around the holidays, nothing more, and most of the time, the myth isn’t true. This year will be one of those yearsunless you’re on the West Coast, prices have been slowly coming down,” DeHaan said. Before the FLW Tour on the Potomac River presented by the National Guard began this w eek, National Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., dedicated his efforts to his wife, who has been a vital part of his support over the course of his career. Martin, the reigning Forrest Wood Cup champion, led the rst three days of the event and on Sunday he got to dedicate a victory to her, as well. A t the end of the day, Martin's ve bass worth 13 pounds, 7 ounces gave him a total four-day weight of 66 pounds, 6 ounces just 3 ounces heavier than second place as well as a championship trophy and $126,000. The win boosted Martin's career winnings past the $2 million mark. Martin's teammate, National Guard pro Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., narrowly missed earning his rst Tour win and posted a total weight of 66 pounds, 3 ounces to claim second place. Lucas won $34,276 for his efforts. "Every win is just so special, but this one here is unbelievable," said Martin, who now has ve Tour-level victories. "I dedicated it to my wife earlier in the week before practice started and was able to pull it off. Usually when you say you're going to do something like that you kind of jinx y ourself, so this is one of the most proud (wins) I've ever had." Although he led the entire tournament, Martin's lead shrank more and more each day. On Sunday Martin admitted he didn't think he was going to win the tournament. "I pretty much said I wasn't going to win," Martin said. "I thought somebody was going to bring in a 17or 18-pound bag and edge me out. But God is good. "When I got in and saw some of the weights starting to hit the scale I thought, Man, I might have a shot at this thing.'" Martin said he shed excruciatingly slowly and picked apart grass beds with a Bruiser Baits paddle tail worm. He said he wouldn't catch a sh for 20 minutes and then he would catch one that w ould allow him to replace his smallest sh in his limit and increase his weight by 4 or 5 ounces. Then he would repeat the process. "You feel like a caged animal," Martin said. "Because you're sitting in this one little spot ipping into every little hole you can. "I just stayed con dent out there," Martin said. "(David) Dudley kind of touched on it a little bit. It's not the lures you throw. A lot of times it's not even the exact spot you're shing. It's con dence that wins tournaments, and I had a lot of it this week. It really paid off bigtime. The winning lure really was con dence." The remaining top 10 pros nished the tournament in: 3rd: Castrol pro David Dudley, Lynchburg, Va., 20 bass, 65-7, $28,943 4th: M&Ms pro Jim Moynagh, Carver, Minn., 20 bass, 64-7, $24,610 5th: Colby Schrumpf, Highland, Ill., 20 bass, 63-12, $19,276 6th: Chevy pro Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 62-8, $16,376 7th: Clark Wendlandt, Leander, Texas, 20 bass, 61-11, $15,410 8th: Kellogg's Frosted Flakes pro Dave Lefebre, Erie, Pa., 20 bass, 61-10, $14,443 9th: Clifford Pirch, Payson, Ariz., 20 bass, 6110, $13,476 10th: EverStart pro Ron Shuf eld, Bismarck, Ark., 20 bass, 61-4, $12,510 Overall there were 50 bass weighing 141 pounds, 4 ounces caught by pros Sunday. The catch included 10 ve-bass limits. Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Va., won the co-angler division and $20,000 Saturday with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 47 pounds, 3 ounces followed by Greg Knick of Ansonia, Ohio, in second place with 15 bass weighing 46-11 worth $7,238. In FLW Tour Major tournaments, pros and co-anglers are competing for valuable points that could help them qualify for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of bass shing. The top 35 pro and co-anglers in the point standings from the six FLW Tour Major tournaments will qualify. The Tour stop on the Potomac River presented by the National Guard was hosted by National Harbor and Prince George's County, Maryland, and was the fth of 10 Walmart FLW Tour tournaments of the 2012 season. The Walmart FLW Tour on Kentucky Lake presented by OFF! will be the next tournament and will be held June 7-10 in Murray, Ky. The event will be hosted by the Marshall County Tourist Commission and Murray Convention & Visitors Bureau and boats will launch from Kentucky Dam Marina in Gilbertsville, Ky. For a complete schedule, visit FLWOutdoors.com. Coverage of the Potomac River tournament will be broadcast in high-de nition (HD) on NBC Sports Network when "FLW" airs June 24 from 1-2 p.m. ET. They Gave Their Todays for Our TomorrowsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchThe Civil War ended in 1865. But it wasn’t until 1997 that the last shot of that war was red. In 1997, two young boys playing around with their new metal detector came across a live shell that dated back to the Civil War. The police came and exploded the shell, in many ways making it the last shell red from the Civil War. It’s pretty amazing that years after the end of a war, its weapons could still be alive and capable of destruction. Yet that seems to be the nature of war: its effects linger on in the lives of people and nations for many generations. Most of us can recall the World War II photo of ve Marines raising an American ag on the island of Iwo Jima. The man in the center of the photo was John Bradley. Although Bradley won the Navy Cross for saving a fellow soldier’s life, he preferred not to talk about the war and refused to accept any hero worship that others tried to force on him. One of the few comments Bradley ever made about the war, he made to his young son in response to a remark about heroism: “The real heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who didn’t come back.” This weekend, we honor those men and women who didn’t come back. The ones who, in President Abraham Lincoln’s words in the Gettysburg Address, “gave the last, full measure of devotion.” When we re ect on the honor and heroism of our soldiers, we are confronted with the sacri ces they made, as well as our response to those sacri ces. The whole concept of anyone making sacrices for us, much less dying for us, sometimes makes us uneasy. Confronting their heroism forces us to stop and examine our own lives. Why did they do what they did? What cause is worth dying for? Would we be willing to do the same? Celebrities are people who make news. Heroes are people who make history. The qualities of heroism are eternal--self-sacri ce, courage, honor, duty. A man who served in the Navy during World War II shared that one night he was running his transport across the Atlantic when he noticed the white trail of a torpedo coming toward him. His ship was lled with hundreds of soldiers, and the potential loss of life would have been devastating. Nearby, a smaller ship had also seen the torpedo coming. The captain of the smaller vessel maneuvered his ship between the transport and the torpedo. The explosion destroyed his ship, killing all those on board. The man who told this story ended it by saying, “The skipper of that other ship was my best friend.” Slowly, he remarked, “You know, there is a verse in the Bible which has special meaning for me now. It is this: Greater love has no one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” What kind of love would give itself up for another? What kind of love would be willing to die for you and me? It’s the love that Jesus demonstrated to show us how much we mean to God. It’s the love we celebrate today in the example of those soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. In India there is a cemetery where the bodies of American soldiers are buried. Over the entrance to the cemetery are these words: “Tell Them We Gave Our Todays for Their Tomorrows.” Let’s never forget that our tomorrows were bought with a price. Someone had to pay with their lives, so that we might be free today. There is no way we can suf ciently say, “Thank you.” In the revised words of the hymn, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, “As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, God’s truth is marching on. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Highway 721 west of Lake Okeechobee on the Brighton Seminole Indian ReservationMust be 18years old to play Bingo. tion in 1992. Mr. Lee and his teams have competed in several other prestigious basketball tournaments -including invite only tournaments -throughout the state of Florida. As contenders in the 1996 City of Palms Classic, they became the rst team in Southwest Florida to win. Teams from throughout the nation travelled to Ft. Myers for the title, but Lee's team took it home. He was also the recipient of a coach of the year award by the Ft. Myers News Press. And still with all his success over the years, Lee will not take all of the credit. "I've had great players, assistant coaches, and support," he said. With much to show for and much to miss, it is obvious that retiring as a coach was a choice Lee has thought long and hard about. "I was always in love with basketball," shared Coach Lee. "It's a hard decision but it feels good. I put in 27 valuable years and it's someone else's turn to take in this new breed of athletes, this new generation." Lee was an understanding coach. He recalls that his players used to think he was "a mean coach," but he says he was only trying to teach them. "I believe in discipline, motivation, and communication," said Lee. Later on, it seems that the lessons Lee was trying to instill got through. One of his players that graduated, Anthony Midget, moved on to become the defensive coordinator for Georgia State's football program. Mr. Lee spoke highly of Midget. "He personally called me and thanked me the other day. Coaching young men like him was very rewarding for me." But an even more challenging and rewarding student to coach was Lee's own son, Ravin, a senior at Clewiston High School. "I was more aggressive with him than anyone else," said Lee. "He would always be like Dad, why are you always sticking to me?' He continued to look at me more as his father than his coach, but coaching him has been one of my top highlights." Now Lee's focus is on his son and his teaching career. He is evaluating different schools for Ravin to best determine his son's situation. But now that he will have more time, Lee will concentrate more on teaching. "Teaching is important to me," said Lee. He plans to stay involved in CHS basketball, just with more time to relax now. "I'm not gonna be like Brett Favre, but I'm not saying I won't come back if the desire and commitment is still within me." Lee is a very valuable member of the coaching staff at Clewiston High School and people are reluctant to see him go as a coach but happy for him, as well. The Clewiston Booster Club has rewarded Lee for all of his service to the school with an all expenses paid trip to the NCAA's 2013 Final Four in Atlanta. Lee is excited, he says, and has expressed his deepest gratitude as he has never had a chance to attend this event and has always wanted to go. With Lee retiring, he is working closely with CHS Athletic Director Joseph Roth to determine Lee's replacement. With nine applicants, and resumes still being accepted, Clewiston will not go without. "I don't know what's in store, but I'm happy with what I've done and I'm blessed," says Lee. "It is very rewarding to go out on a positive note." 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 24, 2012 SUBMITTED PHOTOCentral Elementary Tropicana SpeechTropicana winners for Central Elementary were Betty Sanchez, 1st place, Jon Basquin, 2nd place, and Kylie Allred, 3rd place. All women who are thinking about getting pregnant in the next 3-4 months should have a sit-down session with their healthcare provider for pre-conceptual counseling. Counseling and evaluation of important issues and risk factors pertinent to all women who want to get pregnant, including special medical, surgical, gynecologic, obstetrical, and age related history, are provided. Planning a pregnancy gives you and your baby a healthy start. All women of child-bearing years should be pre-screened for general health and possible risk factors before attempting to become pregnant. With a small amount of prepregnancy planning, many potential complications in pregnancy can be avoided. Women should not smoke, or should quit smoking prior to conception. Women should avoid alcohol and drugs because they can cause birth defects in a fetus. Women should also take Folic Acid (400mg) once a day for about three months prior to getting pregnant. Folic acid has been shown to reduce the development of defects of the spine such as spina bi da and anencephaly. Eating dark green vegetables and beans are also good sources of essential vitamins needed for a healthy pregnancy. Even though the paternal effects of alcohol, smoking and drugs have not been extensively studied in men, the most popular belief is that men play a key role in the health of a developing fetus. Males and females should ask themselves: "Am I ready to be a parent? Can I emotionally, physically, psychologically and economically provide for another human being?" Meeting with a healthcare provider prior to pregnancy allows for screening of risk factors, lifestyle modi cations, and immunization. Are You Ready to Get Pregnant? BY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health DepartmentsThe week of May 2127 has been designated as National Recreational Water Illness Prevention Week. The goal is to highlight the importance of healthy swimming behaviors in preventing recreational water illnesses (RWIs). RWIs are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in contaminated mists or aerosols, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, or oceans. RWIs can also be caused by chemicals in the water or chemicals that evaporate from the water and cause indoor air quality problems. Diarrhea is the most common RWI, and it is often caused by germs like Crypto (short for Cryptosporidium), Giardia, norovirus, Shigella, and E. coli. Children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for RWIs. Speci c actions you can take to promote healthy swimming include: Do not swim when you have diarrhea. Do not swallow pool water or get pool water in your mouth. Shower before swimming (children too!). Wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Take children on bathroom breaks or change diapers often. Change children's diapers in a bathroom, not at poolside. Recreational water activities are an important part of summer fun, exercise and leisure. To make this summer a healthier experience, the Hendry and Glades County Health Departments urge swimmers to continue their swimming activities, but keep in mind healthy swimming behaviors to reduce the risk of recreational water illnesses. Additional information about Recreational Water Illness Prevention Week 2012 can be found at www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming/rwi_ prevention_week.htm. Her father found her at his ex mother-in-law’s house after driving to her friend’s house whom she was supposed to spend the night with. Furious and upset that he didn’t know her whereabouts and had not heard from her, he had the scolding of a lifetime ready for her. Until he saw her tears. That’s when Mr. Reyes found out his 13-year-old daughter had been raped. “My rst thought was that I was going to kill somebody,” said Reyes. His daughter confessed to him that she lied about her whereabouts and left with friends to attend a party that was not supervised by adults. Later that night, the Clewiston Police Department was called to the scene due to the number of underage kids at the party. The event had apparently gotten so hectic that neighbors reported it. “My supervisor lives down the road, he could see the swarms of kids walking up the hill going to the party,” said Mr. Reyes. When the of cers arrived, they discovered the minors were drinking alcohol. After con scating the alcohol, the of cers left -without contacting parents, according to Reyes -and the party ultimately dissipated. The friend’s mother said with all of the activity and confusion her children jumped in one car while Reyes’s daughter jumped in another. Reyes’s daughter reportedly ended up in a vehicle with Byron Holmes, 23, and Antrovan Smith, 20, who said they were going to take her home, said Mr. Reyes. From the party, the men drove the daughter to Holmes’s house, where he lives with his grandparents and uncle, according to the of cial arrest report. According to the daughter’s statement, they were “hanging out” and talking outside. Eventually, they moved into the house, where she was instructed to be quiet because they did not want to disturb the residents of the home. Once inside Holmes’s bedroom, the daughter sat on the bed. One began to undress her and Smith’s statement read that Byron fondled her. Both suspects blamed the other. Smith was charged with Lewd and Lascivious Molestation, a felony of the second degree. Holmes was charged with Lewd and Lascivious Molestation, as well. After spending Mother’s Day ling out a report for the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce, Mr. Reyes did not agree with the charges. His daughter was taken to Ft. Myers to a rape unit where she was given a full interview and investigators there determined she had indeed been raped, according to Mr. Reyes. After Smith and Holmes were not charged with sexual assault, he felt justice was not being served. “I don’t feel like anybody is paying attention,” said Reyes, ”There are other kids that are in danger of these two guys, supplying these kids with marijuana and alcohol. There are other parents that need to be aware one of them is out on bond now.” Now, his daughter is being threatened for speaking out and he worries how many other girls are being bullied. He is not targeting law enforcement of cials; he simply wants other parents to know what he has been through and to be wary with their own kids. “I do have a lot of anger. I have been a coach for seven years for girls from ages 7 to 15. I know a lot of these kids. I coached them, last thing I want to see them end up is pregnant or raped. That’s why I volunteer my time to get these kids off the streets,” said Reyes. Men Arrested, Charged with Sex Crime Against Minor Antrovan Smith Byron Holmes
