V. N T, M NEXT HEARING IN JULYBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comAfter having to be taken out from the courtroom due to his violent outbursts, Drake was deemed, for the moment, un t to stand trial. According to of cial reports, Drake was lead into a Lee County courtroom this past Monday wearing a suicide watch suit and anked by eight bailiffs. Drake began yelling, "You're all run by the new world order!" His lawyer, Beatriz Taquetchel, attempted to calm him down. Drake spit in her face. He was then yanked from the courtroom and Taquetchel excused herself from the courtroom to clean herself up. Drake was not brought back into the courtroom. Drake was in court to determine whether or not he was competent to stand trial for second degree murder. The charge is the result of Drake reportedly killing his grandfather, 84-yearold John William Drake, after having an argument by hitting him repeatedly in the head then slitting his throat. Drake then ed to Cape Coral with his grandfather's body, leaving it in the pickup truck at an intersection after Drake took off on foot. Drake told police that after he spotted a traf c camera pointing in his direction, he jumped out of the truck and ran. An hour long search by Lee County Sheriff's led to his capture. Law enforcement of cials reported that Drake showed no signs of being under the in uence of alcohol or any other substance. He also displayed no remorse in the days following the incident. Drake's rst court appearance was on Dec. 6, shortly after his capture. Footage from the courtroom showed him to be tied to a wheelchair after, law enforcement of cials said, he became highly combative with them. His next court appearance has been scheduled for July of this year after he receives treatment for an unknown amount of time and is evaluated. Drake Unable to Stand Trial Fuel thefts spiking in the last two yearsBY JESSICA SCHULTZ e Clewiston NewsThieves recently smuggled 500 gallons of diesel fuel from a farm tank at C&B Farms in Clewiston. Conveniently, the location had not yet had its cameras installed, while the rest of the farm was under surveillance. Whether this was an educated attack or just a lucky guess is unknown. The easiest question to ask is, "How could anyone make off with that amount of fuel undetected?" According to Gene McAvoy, Hendry County Extension Director and Regional Vegetable Agent, fuel can be transferred into ve-gallon jugs or other larger fuel tanks in trucks and trailers that seem completely normal in a farm environment. However, C&B Farms is not the only victim of these thefts. In another arrest in Collier County, a thief revealed that his source of information was Google Earth. He used this web-mapping service to identify fuel reserves and nd more obscure trails to enter properties from the "back way." Armed with this new technology, thieves are proving more cunning than ever. McAvoy advises farmers to locate fuel tanks and chemical storage well Strong start to season, con dent in reaching post-seasonBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comWith a loss against LaBelle this past Tuesday, the varsity Lady Tigers, experienced a slight set back to their goals this season. The LaBelle softball team has, traditionally, elded strong players and has been a force to contend with in the past few years. Going into Tuesday night's game, the Lady Tigers were 5-1, with two district wins that they claimed against Dunbar and Gateway Charter. LaBelle held the Lady Tigers to a single digit score as their pitcher, Gennifer Raulerson, was a force to be reckoned with that night. As a team, the Lady Tigers have posted impressive numbers early in the season. The team's combined batting average is .351; on-base percentage is .486, and their slugging percentage is .462. These are impressive numbers when compared to last season's gures. Last season, the Lady Tigers went 8-10 overall, 4-2 in district play. This year's start looks con dent and promising. Varsity Softball Coach Melissa Whitehead is con dent in the ability of her players and admits that having a strong start to the season is a con dence booster. She commented on her team hours before they faced LaBelle. "We are looking good so far," said Whitehead. LOW COST VACCINATION CLINICS 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 Who is a Christian?BY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchIn recent weeks there has been a national controversy over the question, “Just Who Is A Christian?” Everyone is afraid to give a clear-cut, de nite, and scriptural answer to this question. This is because of all of the “human tradition” that has ooded into many so-called “churches.” Jesus said, “In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrine the traditions of men.” Again He said, “He that rejecteth me and receiveth not My Word hath one that judgeth him, the Word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” As to how one becomes a Christian, just read the “Great Commission” in Matthew 28:18-20 and Mark 16:15-16, and further read the Apostle Peter’s answer on Pentecost to those who asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” These scriptures teach that one must Hear and Believe the Gospel (Good News), that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and arose the third day and that He has all authority in Heaven and Earth and that He has ascended on high where He is both Lord and Christ. Those who Hear and Believe this are told to “Repent and be baptized (immersed) in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins to receive the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). The Lord adds these to His one and only Church (Acts 2:47). This local church is one that continues steadfastly in the apostles doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers (Acts 2:47). Any question that one may have about a particular teaching on any subject can be found in the New Testament, since the Church is founded on “the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Chief Cornerstone.” The only name given by God for us to wear is the name “Christian” (Acts 11:26). Since many groups do not follow the New Testament, but human tradition, they are full of people who have not been converted to Christ in the rst place, and do not follow Christ’s Teachings in the second place. It really is not all that complicated. Jesus said, “The blind will follow the blind, and both will fall into the ditch.” We at First Christian Church are trying to get people out of the ditch of “human tradition” and win them to simple “New Testament Christianity.” We want to see the unity that Jesus prayed for (John 17:20-21) and the Apostle Paul plead for (I Cor. 1:10-13).Butter y LessonsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchA man found a butter y cocoon and noticed a small opening appearing. He sat and watched as the butter y struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. The man, wanting to help the butter y, took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butter y emerged easily. The man continued to watch the butter y because he expected at any moment the butter y would ap its wings and y away. It didn’t happen. In fact, the butter y spent the rest of its life crawling around with shriveled wings and was never able to y. What the man did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butter y to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing uid from the body of the butter y into its wings so that it would be ready for ight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives in order to be strong enough to y. In the 15 plus years I have been raising butteries for release on Easter Sunday, I have learned much and have gotten the timing down. I plan for the butter ies to emerge the week before Easter, so each child who comes to church can release a butter y which has come out of a cocoon as a symbolic remembrance of Christ coming out of the tomb. This year is no different, and I will be ordering butter ies soon. Timing is everything to get a successful coming out experience. You receive the tiny caterpillars and put them in a feeding cup. They eat for about seven to 10 days, are in the chrysalis for seven to 10 days, and then emerge as butter ies. One year, following my timing schedule, I had plans for over 100 butter ies to emerge. None did. My timing was the same, but as of the Saturday before Easter, not one butter y had emerged. It didn’t look like a mass butter y release was going to happen that year. But God had other plans. By sunrise on Easter morning, one butter y had emerged. During the worship services, enough butter ies came out that we were able to have a release afterwards. That year was unique and special in that being newly out of their cocoons, the butter ies stayed on people’s ngers while they pumped their wings to get ready to y. A number of people were able to take a chrysalis home and celebrate “resurrection” again as their butter ies emerged in the days following Easter. Blessings owed. Let’s see: John’s timing: maybe 1. God’s timing: a hundredfold with addition blessings. There’s got to be a lesson in there somewhere.Scriptures; Living, EvolvingBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThe Bible has been criticized for being “chauvinistic” – excessively attached to one point of view over others. For example, in the case of marriage, writings suggest that males are predominant (e.g. 1 Corinthians 7, 1 Peter 3). Scriptures speak of the world known in their day. We tend to forget that those who wrote were divinely inspired were also people of their own times. They didn’t ride in automobiles, didn’t know about dental care, didn’t have cell-phones, lived in a world where slavery was common, were not likely to regard their wives as equal partners in marriage, had no systems of vaccinations for devastating illnesses, and on and on. Over time, and with God’s revelation, it becomes evident that we do not live as did our spiritual ancestors. We build on their heritage and inspired gifts; we bring the gifts of what God reveals to us in our own times. Nobody has surpassed Saint Paul’s hymn to love (1 Corinthians 13) which speaks to the heart of marriage and what it takes to make it succeed; or that, “they are no longer two but one (Mark 10:9)” with no mention about who is to be dominant or who is to submit. The Scriptures are the living word of God; and, like all living things, they will evolve, grow, incorporate what has come to us from God as we come to know Him a little better each passing generation. My earthly father was limited in the hours he could spend at home, unhappy when I didn’t do as well in school as he would have liked, protective in public-chiding in private, often too tired to go over my homework at a very elementary level. Later, I realized the stresses and strains of his world; he did a pretty good job of providing, parenting, protecting, and nurturing. I grew up. He was a product of his day and age; he stuck to his values and they carried him through. They laid the foundations for my life; not without changes or with the blessings of the advantages that my world has and his lacked. Likewise, as I think about those who laid our spiritual foundations; they were wonderful and great people, literally and guratively saints. We build on their foundations; we do things differently, we evolve and grow. As parents are proud of their children for doing better than they did; I can’t help believe that those who gave us our spiritual heritage would be proud of us when we move forward and work to make our world better than theirs. I want my child to do better than I was able to do; I am a product of my own day and age, and who am I to hold back or think that I always know best. Perhaps one of God’s greatest gifts is that we move forward, change, grow, evolve. His word, written and revealed in us, will one day lead to that kingdom where all things are perfected and made whole. RELIGION COLUMNS Jackie Miller Sam S. Thomas John Hicks “My earthly father was limited in the hours he could spend at home, unhappy when I didn’t do as well in school as he would have liked, protective in public-chiding in private, often too tired to go over my homework at a very elementary level. Later, I realized the stresses and strains of his world.”Rev. Sam Thomas

OBITUARIES BY MARK KINGAs the month of February ies by here on Lake Okeechobee, the bass shing has been best described as “awesome.” Catching 30 to 40 bass a day on wild shiners is no problem, and the arti cial bite has been almost as good. Most of the bass seem to be still on the outside grass close to the main lake, with a few bass in different areas moving in to spawn and then moving right back out to the outside. My clients have been having the time of there lives catching bass. I can’t even begin to tell you how many have caught the largest bass they have ever seen in their lives right here on the lake. I have been targeting the outside grass line from Cochran’s Pass to Pelican Bay with the deciding factor being the wind. Areas like the East Wall, Ritta Island, and Long Point have been really good places to sh. When shing with the shiners try to pick a point out on the main lake and anchor up, be sure to take a lot of bait because you will use up at least a dozen an hour if not more. The arti cial bite has been a little slow some days and really good others. I have been using the Charlie’s Worms Zipper Dipper and shing it slow like a worm along the outside grass line and back in, about a good pitch into the grass. I have also caught bass really well on a one ounce Medlock jig shed in most of the same areas that I’m shing wild shiners. This jig has a double weed guard that resists getting caught up in the weeds and the one ounce size has just the right fall. You will need to sh a trailer on this jig to make it work right, the bigger the better. When the wind is blowing a spinnerbait has been working just outside the grass on the main lake but if the wind blows too hard the water dirties up to much to sh a spinnerbait. I just can’t tell you in words how great Lake Okeechobee is shing right now, if you have ever had the desire to come to South Florida bass shing then now would be the time to make it happen. The crappie shing is still hit and miss with limits being pretty hard to catch right now. I have heard of a few bluegills being caught but it will be another month or so before it really kicks in. As most folks know I guide in the Florida Keys for tarpon during the season from mid April through June so if anyone is looking to catch a giant tarpon get a hold of me soon as dates are lling up quick. I will also be heading to the Venice-Louisiana area this fall for red sh season and will also start booking trips for big red sh on y and conventional tackle. Fishing is my life and if you would like a trip of a lifetime just give me a call and I can make it happen. Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report BY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health Departments There is a public health system in each community. The public health system does not mean county health departments alone. The public health system is de ned as the wide range of public, private, and voluntary organizations such as governmental agencies, school systems, health care providers, hospitals, law enforcement, community-based organizations, local associations, businesses, and individuals. The function of this broad system framework is to work together collectively to improve the health of the community. The following diagram shows how we are all connected to each other within the local public health system: Some speci c responsibilities of the entire public health system are to: Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease Protect against environmental hazards and prevent injuries Promote and encourage healthy behaviors Assure the quality and accessibility of health services Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery The core functions of the public health system include: Assessment: Making regular, systematic collection, assembly, analysis and distribution of information on the health of the community, including statistics on health status, community health needs, and epidemiological and other studies of health problems. Policy development: Using the scienti c knowledge to assist in the decision-making about public health and taking a strategic approach to leadership for public health policy. Assurance: Engaging policy-makers, community partners, businesses, and the public to help determine what level of services are needed in the community. There are ten essential public health services and they are derived from the speci c responsibilities and core functions which include: Monitoring health status within the community Diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards Informing, educating, and empowering people about health issues Mobilizing community partnerships to identify and solve health problems Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health Enforcing laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety Linking people to needed personal health services Assuring a competent public health and personal health care workforce Evaluating the effectiveness, accessibility and quality of health services Conducting research for innovative solutions to health problems The Public Health Wheel best illustrates the relationship among core functions, speci c responsibilities and the ten essential public health services. There will always be challenges in rural communities. If everyone works collectively as a community and strengthens partnerships, they can make improvements to the overall health and safety of their communities! W hat is a Public Health System? 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 An environmental monitoring program to measure the effectiveness of the state-federal Kissimmee River Restoration Project has revealed a promising increase in wading birds and waterfowl, thriving aquatic invertebrates and improvements in water quality. “The abundant wildlife now seen along the Kissimmee is a powerful indicator of the bene ts of long-term investments in restoration,” said South Florida Water Management District (SFW MD) Executive Director Melissa Meeker. “The District’s documentation of these improvements provides us and our restoration partners—as well as the public—with critical insights into the ecosystem’s ongoing recovery.” Environmental monitoring conducted since completion of the rst phase of construction in 2001 has shown improvements in aquatic life, reductions in accumulated bottom sediments, reestablishment of oodplain wetlands and an increase in waterfowl and wading birds. Among the observations: The number of wading birds observed increased by 64 percent. Three species long absent from the river are now documented regularly. Shorebird species commonly observed jumped from 2 to 11. Waterfowl sightings increased dramatically—by 29 times compared to pre-restoration sightings. In addition, dissolved oxygen levels in the river have improved, which is critical for the long-term survival of sh and other aquatic organisms. Wetland vegetation, which once covered only 37 percent of the Phase I restoration area prior to construction, has fully achieved the restoration target of 80 percent coverage. In addition to an increase in wading birds, shorebirds and waterfowl, the numbers of wetland-dependent marsh birds and songbirds have also increased since restoration began in 2001. These results suggest that after construction is complete in 2014 and hydrologic conditions are fully restored in 2015, the region is on track to achieve its goal of restored ecological integrity in the Kissimmee River and its oodplain. Ecological monitoring is scheduled to continue for at least ve years after project completion to guide management of the ood control system and evaluate the ultimate success of the restoration project. The Kissimmee Basin is the headwaters of Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. The Kissimmee River Restoration Project is a partnership between the South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that has been in place for more than 20 years. T he Army Corps is responsible for construction, and the District is responsible for land acquisition and restoration evaluation monitoring. Project construction is scheduled for completion in December 2014. Kissimmee River Restoration Attracts Wildlife PHOTO / SFWMDBirds are plentiful in the areas around the restored Kissimmee River. The deadline for submitting data online at www.birdcount.org or for mailed entries is March 5. The nal results will be posted in April. Some of the Feb. 23 online result reported Clewiston as #8 for reporting 93,497 individual birds. Some other Top Ten tallies were LaBelle #1 with 60 Painted Buntings and #2 with 29 Indigo Buntings. Okeechobee w as #6 with 39 Painted Buntings being reported. Clewiston was #1 for 59,607 American Coots and 27 Purple Swamphens. Clewiston was #8 with 7 Indigo Buntings and placed #3 for reporting 764 w intering American White Pelicans which is a bird of least concern. The American White Pelican is one of the largest North American birds. It is a large, heavy, w hite waterbird with a wingspan as great as nine and a half feet. The wings are long and broad with black wing tips. Its short legs and webbed feet are reddish-orange or pink. They have a long reddish-orange or pink bill w ith a pouch that can hold up to three gallons of w ater. Juvenile American White Pelicans are similar to the adults, but have dirty grayish markings on the head and back. They are usually silent, but nestlings make w hining grunts for food and adults have low hoarse display calls. They do not dive for sh, but scoop up prey which consists mainly of sh, cray sh, tadpoles, and salamanders. They are often seen shing in groups where they will swim on top of the water and make a circle in order to concentrate sh. They will dip their heads under water simultaneously to catch the sh. In the summer, adult American White Pelicans breed in colonies in the interior of Western Canada and the Northwestern United States where they build nests on the ground that they rim with dirt, sticks, and other debris. The female lays one to three eggs which both parents incubate with their large webbed feet. The eggs hatch in about a month. Both parents take care of the young. The strongest chicks leave the nest and join a pod or crche of young pelicans when they are 17-28 days old. The young edge at about 10 weeks of age. During the March 28 to 31 Big "O" Birding Festival, there will be trips in Hendry and Glades County in search of wintering and resident birds in inland Florida. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 9 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 Each year, Troop 619 sponsors the annual carnival held between Nov.-Jan. This carnival is a very important fund-raiser for the Troop, as the money raised helps to pay for summer camp. At the level the Scouts are at, summer camp comes at a hefty price. The price takes away the opportunity for the Scouts to eventually complete their Eagle Scout requirements. Scoutmaster for 20 years with 25 years of total service to the Troop, Tony Chihocky, has had 11 of his scouts become Eagle Scouts, with two more ready to earn their Eagle rank shortly. This is a very high calling for a scout, and it shows the level of commitment Chihocky gives to these boys and to the community. Not many Scoutmasters have had as many boys successfully complete Eagle as Tony has. This year, Troop 619 was blessed by a Florida artist from the Ft. Myers area. Mario Hernandez donated his time and talent to the Troop by airbrushing a 4’x 6’ Troop banner which can be used continually by the Troop for years to come. Mr. Hernandez’s support of and concern for the local youth is far-reaching in every community he visits. Troop 619 extends a huge, heartfelt “Thank You” to Mr. Hernandez. The Troop would also like to express its thanks and gratefulness to the city of Clewiston. Every year, the Elks Club allows the usage of its Francisco Ave. property, and thanks go to the Clewiston Police Department for their help in monitoring the carnival. This year, they also would like to thank Jerree and Cliff Earl, owners of Hungry Howie’s Pizza. The Troop tried to raise extra funds by selling pizza and drinks this year. In addition to helping with the cost of the pizza, Hungry Howie’s also donated a pizza warmer and trays for use. Without this equipment it would have been very dif cult for the boys to sell hot food. The Troop thanks all the families in the community who came out to support the carnival. Although most don’t realize, that support is so very needed and appreciated by the Troop in order that they can continue on their Scout path. This community has always gone out of its way to support the barbecue or chicken dinners, car washes, and bake sales, in addition to the carnival. Over the past few weeks, multiple fuel thefts have hit Hendry County. Over the past two years, thefts have spiked in-step with the trend of rising gasoline prices. “They [fuel and chemicals] are essentially like cash money for a thief,” says McAvoy. In a phone interview with the Clewiston News, McAvoy explains, “The economy is diving; there are people out there that are looking to make quick money.” He has a few tips for farmers, including being careful when buying fuel. Farmers should buy only from reputable dealers to avoid supporting a thief, said McAvoy. And not only is fuel at jeopardy, but also other valuable chemicals. “It almost seems like they’re [thieves] shopping,” says McAvoy. In some situations, thieves only stole certain amounts of select chemicals while leaving other chemicals untouched. So what is being done to prevent the thefts. Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden said, ”We are on the lookout [for fuel thefts] any time gas prices go up. We have already made two solid arrests from footage on game cameras.” Whidden continued to remark that the goal in the long run is to be proactive instead of reactive. He believes constant patrolling is hindering the thefts. Mr. Charles White, the Agriculture Investigator, identi es the problem. “I think the biggest culprit is word of mouth,” said White. “But with our constant patrols and the Agricultural Crime Intelligence Unit we are not working alone.” According to both Whidden and White, Clewiston has been lucky up to this point. With fuel prices projected to shoot up to $4.50 to $5 per gallon by summer, incidents of diesel and gasoline thefts are more probable. McAvoy continues to offer cautionary advice and urges farmers to be careful. “You may be next,” he said. The men then quickly unloaded and separated the prized contents of the vessels into stacks of sea shells, decorative pottery and chert (fossil ized limestone) among the shadows of tower ing Cypress trees. Nearby, white smoke plumes from a Mayaimis village drifted and curled lazily into the indigo tinted sky, while its inhabitants scurried about in excited voices, announcing the recent arrival of the Calusa traders. In minutes, small groups of men and women with bundles of local trade goods were hurrying along the lakes edge to engage the poker face Calusas in the ageless art of bartering. Long before the arrival of the Europeans, business was conducted along the shores of Lake Okeechobee by Native Americans through an exchange network that extended north to the great lakes. Evidence of this ourishing trade can be gleaned from artifacts of basalt, chert, pottery, copper and, later, precious metals that were discovered in and around Lake Okeecho bee. Join us at the Clewiston Museum on March 8, at 7 p.m. as Palm Beach Archeologist, Chris Davenport, presents a program on the Mayaimis nation and the mysteries trade routes that once stretched across Florida to Lake Okeechobee. Mr. Davenport has spent years researching the artifacts of the ancient Mayaimis people that once lived around lake. His intuitive instincts as an archeologist combined with data from arti fact discoveries, creates some interesting con cepts and insights into the trade world of the Mayaimis people. Up until that time, Whitehead explained, the team had not been truly challenged. She hoped that their LaBelle match up would show where they needed improvement and areas that were working smoothly. Their loss against LaBelle was a challenging one but was, essentially, a proving ground. Whitehead noted that her players are per forming strongly and pointed out Whitney Irey and Sydney Duckstein as two players to watch this season. Irey has already posted impressive stats thus far this season with a seemingly un real batting average of .632, with 12 hits and eight runs batted in. Shane Sullivan, Mammen’s nephew, spoke to the seventh grade Social Studies class about his illustrious career as an aircraft designer. He shared that, although he had not been a dedicated student, he followed his own talent pathway and has enjoyed a very successful lifestyle, both in Illinois, where he now calls home, and elsewhere his work has taken him. He said that he, “chases aircraft for a living.” He started out in the military, in the Army, working on airplanes in both Germany and Iraq. Later, he was offered a position in California to work on a secret project for eight years. During this time he had received a security clearance and had the opportunity to actually work on the famous “dream machine.” He has travelled extensively around the world to Australia, Germany, and even Dubai, where he hobnobbed with rich oil magnates. Sullivan currently is employed with Maxima Petroleum, in North Dakota. Ironically, he now drives a fuel truck to oil wells. He shivered as he related that it is very cold and an extremely well paying job that few care to seek out. But for Shane, that’s just part of the adventure of his life travel and living the lucrative and sometimes dangerous lifestyle. He told the kids that since he is a single man, it appeals to him, but it is not for everyone. ”Just follow your own individual dream!” Career Day in Ms. Mammen’s Class SUBMITTED PHOTOPictured from left to right is Shane Sullivan and Ms. Mammen. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 12 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 Power Stealing and Lying in MonturaDep. Krause, with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce, was called out to a residence in Montura in February of last year to investigate a theft of electricity. Jennifer Harloff, with Glades Electric, advised Krause that someone had been tampering with the electric meter and had stolen approximately $785.07 of electricity. Detective Sgt. Buchhofer took over the case and discovered that the person renting the property, 43-year-old Manuel Valdes, had been on the property for the same amount of time that the electricity was being stolen. The landlord of the property stated that he had been having problems with Valdes with late rent and, nally, Valdes wanting to move out due to problems with the septic tank and rats. The landlord informed Buchhofer that the septic tank had been serviced before Valdes moved in and no reports of rats was ever made to him. Valdes also demanded that all the rent that he paid be returned to him. Valdes met with Buchhofer for an interview and stated that the property was in poor condition from the start, had no power, that he used a generator to make repairs, and that he did not live on the property. He also stated that he did call Glades Electric to set up power but was told that there was a problem with the account that the landlord needed to handle. Neighbors reported that Valdes lived in the residence daily, constructed a play set for his children, and built a garden. They, however, were afraid to provide sworn statements for fear or reprisal from Valdes. Glades Electirc stated that Valdes did contact them once for a price quote and set up fee. But, he did not set up service. When Harloff came to read the meter, she found the box tampered with and the meter installed upside down. He was arrested and charged with larceny/grandtheft $300 and less then $5,000.Not The ‘Jolt’ He WantedSheriff Of cers responded to a battery call and found a man that needed to be tased three times. Dep. Hainley, HCSO, responded to a call from Hendry Regional Medical Center on Feb. 21 after man was reported that a man had assaulted an EMT. That man, 34-year-old Lenton Bloodsaw, was in the process of being transported to HRMC for treatment, according to the nursing staff, when he became uncooperative, combative, and went for the throat of EMT Philip Martin. Bloodsaw choked Martin for 30 seconds before being restrained. Upon arriving at the hospital, Bloodsaw was aggressive, cursed at the staff, and pulled out his IV’s. When Hainley arrived and entered the room where Bloodsaw was receiving care, he saw blood and liquids on the oor. When Bloodsaw saw Hainley, he began to curse at him and Dep. Brown. He jumped off the bed and walked towards Hainley. Hainley ordered Bloodsaw to sit back down on the bed, which he refused and charged Hainley. Bloodsaw was met by a group of of cers at the door way. He backed away but kept yelling at Hainley. Hainley ordered him one last time and warned him that he would be tased. Bloodsaw again charged Hainley, who drew his taser and red. Bloodsaw was struck in the chest and fell to the oor. Once the taser’s charge ended, Bloodsaw begin to get back up and was ordered to stay down; he did not comply. Hainley tasered Bloodsaw again, who still was able to get up. Hainley tasered Bloodsaw for the third and nal time, with Bloodsaw complying. Hand restraints were applied. Arrest Blotter Fire was contained, some spotting occurredBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comLast Wednesday afternoon, smoke was seen rising from the northwest section of town as a brush re tore through acres of state land. The brush re burned a 130-acre section of land that is part of a 750-acre section of land owned by the state. The area where the re was located was known for the number of dead Melaleuca trees it contained and can be seen from the levy. According to city of cials, it was fortunate that the winds were highly favorable in helping push the re towards the lake. No injuries nor extensive property damage were reported. The brush re actually helped the area by reducing the fuel load the amount of dry/dead vegetation that a brush re draw on for energy in the area. The Clewiston Fire Department responded to the call and monitored the area overnight to watch for any are-ups. One such are up did occur the morning after the re started but was quickly contained and extinguished. Clewiston Fire Marshal Adam Marquith commented on the ef cacy of the re department and the cause of the re. “From what we have determined, the re was an accidental re,” said Marquith. “There are contractors in the area with lots of machinery. Perhaps a spark from an exhaust or heat from their engines. That is enough, with the grass being dry and the weather conditions that have been conducive to a drought.” He continued to say that the current estimate for the total acreage burned is close to 130 acres. The Division of Forestry was out, surveying the re with their aircraft. They determined that the re was contained and was burning in direction of the lake, he said. City Manager Steve McKown commented in his Weekly FYI that, “The city’s re ghters have extensive training and truly are the best.” Brush Fire Burns More Than 100 Acres I would like to introduce myself to the residents of Hendry County. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 20 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee March 1, 2012 Lack of freeze, better lake level helped harvestBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comHaving survived most of the fall and winter seasons, this year’s sugar harvest is just over 70 percent complete. Judy Sanchez, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications for U.S. Sugar, was very happy to make the announcement that this year’s harvest is markedly better than last year’s harvest that was weakened by several factors. “Thus far, it appears that this crop may approach a more normal sized crop this year,” said Sanchez. “The crop appears to have escaped, for the most part, the weather disasters that negatively impacted our cane crops over the last several years.” Those disastrous weather conditions included multiple hard freezes, dry weather patterns, and a low lake level that hampered the growth and harvest of the cane crop. Fortunately, none of those conditions occurred this harvest. “We lucked out with only one freeze or two and the lake level held fairly stable throughout the season,” said Sanchez. “The rains we received in October de nitely helped and sugar prices have held steady. It’s shaping up to be a great harvest.” In other news, U.S. Sugar hosted a lm crew from the Travel Channel show “Off Limits.” “Off Limits” visited U.S. Sugar to lm a segment for their “How Sugar is Made” episode. The show’s host Don Wildman was on site with Judy Sanchez, his tour guide. Wildman preferred to get hands on during lming and rode in a harvester, watched railcars being loaded and unloaded, and climbed to the top of “Sugar Mountain,” the massive pile of raw sugar. The show is scheduled to air in the fall of 2012.
