SAO: Accusations against city manager “insuf cient”BY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA jzaragoza@newszap.comThe Clewiston News on Friday released a 58-page report on Facebook detailing accusations that Steve McKown, Clewiston city manager, impersonated a law enforcement of cer while breaking up a ght at the local Tiki Bar. The report, made available by the State Attorney's Of ce and focusing on events following the 2011 Sugar Festival, has drawn criticisms from critics of McKown who believe the manager should respond to the allegations, and his supporters who feel that the State Attorney's ndings should have been the last word on the matter. In the report, a number of witnesses to an alleged ght involving the lead singer of the band Ricochet (in town for the Sugar Festival) say McKown ashed a badge and identi ed himself as a law enforcement of cer in an attempt to break up the ght. He reportedly ordered security guards to detain the other man in the ght and reportedly uttered to the man: "Tonight's your lucky night! I'm not taking you to jail." COMMUNITY MOURNS DEATH OF STUDENTBY JUAN LOPEZ jlopez@newszap.comThirteen-year-old Willie Green suffered fatal injuries while riding on his motorized bike in Harlem. The incident happened at just before 5 p.m. on Feb. 9. According to the information provided by Florida Highway Patrol, the boy was traveling on a paved sidewalk on Arkansas Avenue in Harlem when he failed to notice a tree extended across the sidewalk. He struck the tree and the was ejected. He was then airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital. FHP of cials were not immediately available for follow-up questions on the boy's condition that afternoon. The next day, on Friday, Feb. 10, at 4 a.m., he was pronounced deceased at Lee Memorial Hospital. Outpourings of sympathy for the family of Willie Green were present on Facebook and elsewhere after his death was made known. At Clewiston Middle School, where Green was a student, the mood on Friday was somber as students learned of Green's death. Principal Garry Ensor con rmed that the students were shocked by Green's death. "The mood was de nitely somber that day, and we did provide grief counselling for any students who needed it," said Ensor. "Our students are very resilient and are coping." Ensor described Green as a happy, go-lucky child that was very outgoing and was popular amongst all the students. "It is always a shame when a young man passes like that. It is not right." BY BRETT CARLSONIn his brief time as a professional bass sherman, Randall Tharp has achieved considerable success numerous Triple-A wins, top-10 nishes and over a half million dollars in career earnings. But up until today, he'd never won the big one falling just short last year at both Okeechobee and at the Forrest Wood Cup. This week he was able to accomplish two of his biggest goals simultaneously winning a Walmart FLW Tour event and winning a major tournament on the Big O. Tharp has been performing at such a high level lately his victory is hardly a surprise. Even he knew it. Randall Tharp celebrates after learning he won the 2012 FLW Tour event on Lake Okeechobee. After nishing second to friend Brandon McMillan last year, Tharp prophetically said on stage, "I will get my win down here; there is no doubt I will." Tharp proved to be a man of his word. Coming in to this event, he had six consecutive top-10 nishes on Okeechobee spanning FLW and BASS competition. The EverStart pro and wife his Sara travel to the lake every winter to shoot television shows, enter a few tournaments and sample some of the best bass shing southern Florida has to offer. It's become almost a second home. This year, they headed south on Nov. 15 and with his free time, Tharp learned as much as he could about every single mat on the lake. Then he went to work catching giant stringers the rst two days and then grinding it out as the blustery cold front arrived. He had several different areas, all located from either the Monkey Box to Horse Island/Dyess Ditch areas Tharp believes simply hold the biggest bass on the lake. Each day he concentrated on one technique ipping, and the bait he used might surprise some people. Instead of the more popular brandname baits, Tharp ipped a Bitter's Best Value BFM (Bigger, Fatter, Muskrat), a beaver-style bait in Black Blue Glitter color. The retail price on these BFMs? A whopping $5 for two packs of 10. Tharp would rig the bait on either a 1 1/2 or a 2-ounce black tungsten weight depending on the wind and how compact the mats were. He would tie the BFM to 70-pound Diawa She shows off for the camera. Samurai braid and ip with a 7-foot, 11-inch Halo Twilight Series rod. "I tried to make something else work in the three days of practice, but it never happened," said the EverStart pro. "So going into the tournament I knew I was going to ip the thickest, nastiest mats. But I didn't know what areas were going to be the real deal. The whole key to me winning was V. BY GARY E. BITNERBack roads to the west of Lake Okeechobee w ill be the backdrop for the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition over the next week, as a photographer, bear biologist, and lmmaker continue their cross-Florida trek from Flamingo in Everglades National Park to the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. They are scheduled to cross State Road 70 somewhere west of Okeechobee on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Along the way, the hardy travelers will move through public and private wilderness via kayak, bicycle and on foot in order to call attention to the urgent need for the establishment of a wildlife corridor from one end of Florida to the other. The corridor is needed, they say, for the movement of w ater and animals, especially animals that need a wide range for breeding in order to ensure the genetic health of their species. Members of the expedition recently stopped at Billie Swamp Safari on the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation. They were warmly welcomed by Seminole leaders, who strongly supported their conservation outreach efforts. "The Tribe has always made it a part of their w ay of life to take care of the land," said Tony Sanchez, President of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc., and Vice Chairman of the Tribal Council. "Being in the woods was always part of how we grew up. We had to pay respect to our surroundings." Mr. Sanchez, Seminole Tribe of Florida Board Member Joe Frank, and Billie Swamp Safari Director Jacob Osceola Jr. were among a group of Seminoles and friends who were on hand to show their support for the adventurous trip from the bottom to the top of Florida. Florida folk music and lunch were shared with the three visiting trekkers: photographer Carlton Ward Jr., bear biologist Joe Guthrie and lmmaker Elam Stoltzfus, w ho is documenting the expedition for public television. The trio is quick to point out that many educators, conservationists and government of cials have long been focused on establishing a wildlife corridor, which all consider critical to a healthy environmental future for Florida. They say their 400+-mile off-road trek through wilderness, rivers and swamps is all about building awareness of the hard work of many committed conservationists throughout the state. "People have been working toward a wildlife corridor for a very long time," said Mr. Ward, who posts many of his expedition photographs to Facebook as part of a focus on public awareness. "We're following the Florida Ecological Greenways Network, critical linkages created by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and scientists at the University of Florida." "We're trying to be a lens into these landscapes and the stories people have toward conservation. Crossing the Big Cypress National Preserve, the diversity of animals out there was really incredible," said Mr. Guthrie. "We saw tracks for panthers and bears, plus otter, fox, bobcat, opossum, raccoon and rabbit." The health of Florida's black bear population is a critical issue, says Guthrie, a bear biologist. Estimates of the state's bear population run from over two thousand to over three thousand bears, with the largest population in Big Cypress and the highest density in Ocala National Forest. Smaller bear populations pocketed in other parts of Florida need to stay connected to stay healthy, he says. Added Ward Ward, "What can happen, if you're not careful, is that you could turn these places into islands; these places need to be connected so that water can move and wildlife can move." Seminole Tribe Board Member Joe Frank said it was his pleasure to welcome members of the Expedition to the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation and Billie Swamp Safari. "Florida is losing wildlife habitat by the minute," said Mr. Frank. "The Tribe has always taken development at a slower pace, so we can take into account wildlife concerns. We're at the epicenter of panther habitat. We thank you for trying to raise awareness of it." Hendry County Commissioner Karson Turner also met the trekkers at Billie Swamp Safari. "We're excited about this group here," he said. "We're excited about you being in Hendry County. I hope this gains a lot of traction." Margaret England, president of the HendryGlades Audobon Society, said, "This is raising awareness of inland Florida, the heart blood o f Florida, because of the water. This brings awareness of the diversity of habitat that birds need for food, shelter and water." Following their stop at Billie Swamp Safari, south of Clewiston, the group headed north and then west along the Caloosahatchee River, before turning north again and then tracking back east toward Lake Okeechobee. They also plan a stop at the Brighton Seminole Reservation, crossing U.S. 27 several times as they head north toward Sebring. From there, the route passes east of Orlando, as the expedition heads north to the Florida-Georgia state line. They plan to cross a combination of public and private land, much of it owned by large landholders who are sympathetic to the goals of the group. Members of the expedition say conservation easements support local landowners and help to establish the wildlife corridor. The trip hasn't been without its minor mishaps, according to the team. Just as they began their trip at Flamingo in Everglades National Park, a battery caught re on board their boat. And early one evening, as they were trying to make up time while daylight slipped away, they accidentally poled up onto the backs of two alligators. Both incidents ended safely, if not quietly. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Essilor VisiofficeFamily Eye Care proudly offers patients the new Essilor Visioffice System. LOW COST VACCINATION CLINICS 6 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 16, 2012 OBITUARIES The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District will host a public meeting Thursday, Feb. 16, to discuss the scheduled temporary closure of the Moore Haven Lock on the Okeechobee Waterway from April 2 May 25 during installation of the Manatee Protection System (MPS). The meeting will be held in the South Florida Operations Of ce conference room, 525 Ridgelawn Rd., Clewiston, Fla. An open house will be held at 6 p.m., followed by a formal presentation at 6:30 p.m. Technical experts will be available before and after the formal presentation to provide information and answer questions about the project. “Work is tentatively scheduled to begin April 2 when water levels are lower and will take approximately two months to complete, prior to the start of hurricane season,” said Al Bruns, USACE project manager. “The purpose of this meeting is to provide information on the installation process and answer any questions or concerns.” No boating traf c will be allowed to use the Moore Haven Lock during the installation process which consists of de-watering the lock, mounting the MPS to the lock gates, testing of the system and re-watering the lock. The Manatee Protection System has been manufactured and above-ground xtures have been installed. Work is expected to take no more than two months to complete. Installation of the MPS is part of the Manatee Pass Gates project, with the primary goal of safeguarding Florida’s endangered manatees from serious injury or death at water control structures and navigation locks by modifying these structures with the MPS. Using a set of acoustic transmitters and receivers, the MPS detects the West Indian Manatee and prevents the gates from closing and harming the protected animal. The Manatee Pass Gates project received authorization in the Energy and Water Development Appropriation Act of 1994. The project is located in southeast Florida at selected Okeechobee Waterway and Central and Southern Florida (C&SF) project navigation locks and water control structures located in areas within West Indian manatee habitat. The federal government listed the West Indian manatee as an endangered species in 1967, and actively began protecting the manatee under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. To this day, the manatee remains on the endangered species list. The primary goal of the Manatee Pass Gates project is to safeguard Florida’s endangered manatees from serious injury or death at water control structures and navigation locks by modifying these structures with a manatee protection system (MPS). This system is designed to detect the West Indian manatee and prevent the gates from closing and harming the protected animal. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, south Florida’s water control structures and navigation locks were once the second highest cause of human-related manatee deaths in the state. The ood gates and canal locks potentially kill manatees by crushing or drowning them. The MPS consists of a set of acoustic transmitters and receivers that run from the bottom of the gates to the water line. The MPS turns on when the gates are approximately 15 percent from the fully-closed position. If the signal between the sensors is interrupted by a manatee, the lock gates automatically stop. After a programmed delay to allow the obstruction to clear, the gates will attempt to close again. If the obstruction is clear, the gates will close. If the obstruction is still present, the gates will stop again. New Gate System on Lock Would Protect Manatees SUBMITTED PHOTO Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have risen 4.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.63/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.47/g. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 51.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 18.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 12.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 34.8 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “Retail gasoline prices have continued to slowly rise across a majority of the United States,” said Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “With the exception of one stateWyomingall states are seeing their gasoline prices averaging over $3/gallon again, with some of the largest citiesNew York City and Los Angeles closing in on $4/gallon,” DeHaan said. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 16, 2012 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District announced Friday that it will continue releasing water from Lake Okeechobee, sending additional fresh water into the Caloosahatchee Estuary. The new release began Feb. 10. The Corps is making the release in a pulse-like manner to mimic a rainfall event, similar to releases that began on Dec. 16. The target ow to the Caloosahatchee Estuary for this release is an average of 450 cubic feet per second (cfs) over a seven-day period, as measured at W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79) east of Fort Myers. Water managers expect this release of water to help to push back saltwater intrusion, which will have other associated bene ts to the estuary. The low volume releases are expected to help push back saltwater intrusion, reducing impacts and degradation of the freshwater tapegrass and other submerged aquatic vegetation. Friday, the lake stage was at 13.20 feet. The lake is currently within the Operational Band of the 2008 Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule (2008 LORS). At current levels, the Corps may make releases up to 450 cfs to the Caloosahatchee Estuary and 200 cfs to the St Lucie. The Corps and partner agencies will continue to closely monitor and assess system conditions, and may decrease releases if local basin runoff contributes to ows. Corps to Continue Water Releases From Lake Event returns, demonstrates county’s strong agricultural rootsBY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA e Clewiston NewsThe upcoming Ag Expo in Clewiston is promising to be such a worthwhile event that even Adam Putnam will be stopping by to pay a visit. The Florida Commissioner of Agriculture will be in Clewiston, visiting local schools and plans to attend the expo. "He feels strongly enough about Hendry County's ag contributions to come down from sessions," shares Susan Jordan, with the Hendry Economic Development Council. Putnam will deliver the keynote speech at the expo, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. Last year's inaugural ag expo was a complete success, according to the Hendry County EDC, with many folks coming to the Clewiston area to participate in the events of the day. It was a great sight: heavy equipment lled the grounds near the Clewiston Golf Course where the event was staged, and auctioneers made their way in a mobile unit, farmers making their best bid on various tractors and other farm equipment. The idea was the result of a brainstorm between U.S. Sugar and the Hendry EDC to showcase the strong agricultural roots of the area. According to Jordan, ag shows are popular all around the country and South Florida, but have been missing from the local landscape. "Well, why not?" the parties asked themselves and the expo got its start. As many as 1,000 people attended the heavy equipment auction alone last year. The hope heading into this year's event is that more local residents will come out for the expo. In line with that goal, the organizers have rounded up distributors showing off their newest equipment and technology. Exhibitions and demonstrations will be held while "acres and acres of used equipment" are auctioned, said Jordan. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. and winds down at sunset at the Clewiston Air Strip at the end of San Luiz Avenue. According to organizers, the event is held in conjunction with the Weeks Sugarland Heavy Equipment Auction. Other details: At 10 a.m., UF/IFAS will be coordinating a Biofuels Symposium to "dispel any myths about biofuels in South Florida." The Clewiston FFA members will be selling grilled luncheon as a fund raiser for their chapter. The event is free and so is the parking. Putnam to Appear at Ag Expo BY PAT DOBBINSHave a heart ... think about "going green"! The 3 R's of the green slogan reduce, reuse, and recycle offer basic guidance for working toward a cleaner, healthier environment. Two great places to start are at home and at work. Recycling involves taking a product at the end of its useful life and re-processing all or part of it to make another product. Recycling is a simple way that you, as a consumer, can help out the environment and help preserve our natural resources from being depleted. So, get involved and get green. So many items used in our modern lifestyles can be recycled. Here are some:ElectronicsCDs and DVDs, Cell Phones, Computer Monitors, Computers, DVD Players, Inkjet Cartridges, MP3 Players, Of ce Machines, Televisions, VCRs, Video Games, and Consoles.PlasticNumber Four Plastic, LDPE, Number Six Plastic, Polystyrene, Number Seven Plastic, Plastic Bags, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Casing, and PVC. Not all communities collect plastics, and not all plastics are recyclable. Follow the guidelines for your local community by nding out more from the county recycling department. Only recycle those plastics that are allowed. Remove plastic lids and rings from containers because often they are not recyclable. Rinse out containers and atten them before placing them in recycling bins. The smell of sour milk coming from a discarded milk jug is pretty nasty and can attract animals and insects.PaperBooks, Brown Paper Bags, Cardboard, Cartons, Catalogs, Computer Paper, Magazines, Mail, Newspapers, Paperboard, and Phone Books. Most municipalities will accept different types of paper. Paper should be sorted by type. Construction paper, brightly colored "astro bright" papers, and greasy or waxed coated papers aren't allowed because they can ruin a batch of paper which is being recycled. These must be thrown in the garbage. Toilet paper, tissues, tissue paper, and paper towels must also go in the garbage as well.CardboardCardboard can also be recycled in most communities. Your cardboard should be attened for easy pickup. Do not recycle cardboard that is greasy (such as pizza or donut boxes) or wax coated (such as meat and certain produce boxes). The wax and grease can ruin an entire batch of cardboard that is being recycled. How can you tell if the cardboard is wax coated? Scratch your nger over the surface; if you see wax under your ngernails, it means the cardboard needs to be tossed in the garbage.MetalsAerosol Cans, Aluminum Cans, Aluminum Foil, Metal, Clothes Hangers, and Steel. Most communities take cans of all types. Before tossing metals in the recycling bin, rinse the cans thoroughly to remove all traces of food. Food particles can attract insects and; food contaminants can ruin a batch of recycling. Also try to remove the paper label and atten before throwing in the recycling bin.GlassGlass must also be rinsed, and sorted by color. Remove the lids and bottle tops since these can contaminate the batch of glass recycling. Do not include mirrors, dishes, light bulbs, or ceramics. Here are a few handy tips: Collect newspapers in a paper grocery bag or in tied bundles (Did you know that it takes up to 75,000 trees to produce one Sunday edition of the New York Times!) Don't recycle wet cardboard. It can clog sorting machines. Throw it away to keep it from contaminating the rest of the load. Don't recycle bottle tops; they're not made from the same plastic as recyclable bottles. But if you forget, don't sweat it. They'll be sorted down the line. (Quick fact: The energy saved by recycling one plastic bottle can power a computer for 25 minutes.) Rinse cans, but crushing isn't required. The aluminum can is the most common as well as the most valuable recycled item in the United States. It can be recycled again and again, and so ef ciently that a can is regenerated and back on the shelf in as little as 60 days.CleaningDon't worry if you can't get the lime out of the beer bottle or the last of the peanut butter from the jar. The recycler's machinery will zap all contaminants. But do empty and rinse glass jars and containers. Here are some ways that things are recycled: Plastic soda bottles can be recycled into pillow ll. Plastic milk bottles, detergent bottles can be recycled into new detergent bottles. Take-out boxes and shampoo bottles can be recycled into drainage and irrigation pipes. Grocery bags and shrink wrap can be recycled into new bags. Yogurt containers and bottle caps can be recycled into plastic lumber. Packing peanuts can be recycled into plastic lumber. Note: Squeezable ketchup bottles and microwavable dishes can't be recycled. Don't contribute to dangerous seepage in land lls by throwing hazardous materials in the garbage. Please take these items to special locations in your community where they can be disposed of properly. One of the most common contaminant that recycling centers may deal with is plastic bags. Many folks properly sort their recycling but then use a plastic bag to dispose of the recyclables. Others will drop empty plastic bags into plastic recycling. Plastic grocery bags should be placed in a recycling bin at your local grocery store. Dry cleaning bags and hangers can be returned to the dry cleaners. Following these tips helps to keep recycling centers operating at maximum ef ciency. It will also reduce bad odors and help keep animals from rooting around your recycling bins. But most importantly of all, it will prevent perfectly good recyclables from ending up in the land ll, and, therefore, help to keep the environment cleaner and healthier for everybody. That's why being green is so important! Tips for Recycling

Tristan Chapman, Chairman Board of County Commissioners 8 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 16, 2012 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonOne of the most abundant and boldly colored birds in North America is the Red-winged Blackbird. The male is a stocky, broad, glossy blackbird w ith red-and-yellow shoulder badges. This stocky bird has a conical bill and medium-length tail. Females are streaky brown with a pale breast and often have a whitish eyebrow. Young birds resemble the female, but are paler below and have buff feather fringes. The Red-winged Blackbird’s call is a high whistle with the male’s song a scratchy “conk-la-ree” and the female’s song a “chit chit chit chit chit teerr.” The oldest recorded Red-winged Blackbird was 15 years and nine months old. In inland Florida, Red-winged Blackbirds are a permanent resident that is found around freshw ater ponds and marshes in rural and urban areas. Their diet consists of weed and grass seeds, grains, insects and other invertebrates. During the breeding season they are found throughout Florida where they nest in loose colonies. Females build nests by winding stringy plant material around stems of cattails, marsh plants or small shrubs. She adds wet leaves or decayed w ood to the woven nest then she plasters the inside with mud. When nished the nest is four to seven inches across and three to seven inches deep. Three to four eggs with pale blue-green to gray with black or brown makings are laid from March to July. The eggs hatch within to 12 days with the young edging in nine to 10 day. Become a “Citizen Scientist” and help report Red-winged Blackbirds and other bird species during the 2012 GBBC. It is easy for youth and adults to submit lists daily for 15-minute or more observations of birds you can identify for any or all days during the Feb. 17-20 to the GBBC web site at www.birdsource.org/gbbc. The District Golden Apple Teacher of the Year winner is Nan Akin who teaches at LaBelle High School. The Foundation for Hendry County Public Schools recently recognized the Golden Apple Teachers of Year for all ten Hendry County Schools. A team of judges interviewed all ten Golden Apple winners and selected Nan Akin as the District winner. Nan is a graduate of LaBelle High School, Edison Community College, Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast University. She has taught for 14 years at LaBelle High and currently teaches Advance Placement Geography and World Geography. Her involvement at LaBelle High also includes serving as a STEM Leader, Freshman Class Sponsor, Lead Teacher and on the Literacy Council, NHS Advisory Committee, AVID Site Team and Mentor Teaching Program. Nan still remembers the warm welcome she received 14 years ago upon returning to LaBelle to teach school. She looks back at her career. Nan said, “The most memorable accomplishment in my teaching thus far was the class trip to Washington in 2008. I took ten students to the last Presidential Inauguration in Washington. More than one million attended that Inauguration, so I was relieved to bring all of my students back safely.” The kids were amazing on the trip and they watched democracy in action. “Our country has set the example for leaders taking power and leaving positions of power peacefully and with respect for over 200 years,” she said. “We watched in foot-numbing weather while our 44th President, Barack Obama, took of ce.” What most kids watched on T.V., her students were able to experience rsthand. She loves Washington, D.C. and sharing that with students was priceless. Everything from the plane ride, a rst for a few, to the snow ght, was a very memorable teaching experience. Her favorite quote is “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and will never be.” -Thomas Jefferson. She appreciates all the support from her family, administration and colleagues have given her to be a successful teacher while making a difference in all students education. Nan will be representing the Hendry County School District in the upcoming 2013 State of Florida Department of Education / Macy’s Teacher of The Year Competition. One of the 67 District Teachers of The Year will be selected as Florida’s Teacher of The Year for 2013. The competition and process will be highlighted with the announcement in May of the state winner. We wish her the best in upcoming the competition. Nan is the daughter of Susan and Scott Cooper and the wife of Daniel Akin. She is also the mother of two boys, Drayton and Grayson Akin. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 9 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 16, 2012 SUBMITTED PHOTOVFW Post 4185 salutes veteran patientsLadies Auxiliary and Post Of cers and members saluted veteran patients at Palm Terrace on Feb. 6 to celebrate, honor, and thank them for the military service they provided during their lifetime. From there it was just determining what was and what wasn’t getting shed and managing them accordingly. The key area I used today and on day two really had smaller, isolated mats. I made good moves for four days.” To cement his dominating week, Tharp sacked 23 pounds, 2 ounces on a day when only four of the top 10 pros caught a limit. His total weight of 101 pounds, 12 ounces gave him back-to-back Okeechobee tournaments over the century mark and the new FLW Tour record for margin of victory (23-9). So now I’ve got that out of the way and I can set my sights on other places. But this place has always been No. 1 for me.” The only thing Tharp didn’t do this week was break McMillan’s total weight record. “I want to dedicate this win to Jimmy and the McMillan family,” Tharp said. “They’ve been through a lot. But then the bite got tougher and McMillan thinks he got too impatient. “I just wanted to come in and compete,” said the 2011 Okeechobee champion. “It’s been a challenge the last month or so to think about shing. But it’s been good. I’m happy with what I did this week. The wind and weather just really hurt me.” If he couldn’t repeat, he was hoping Tharp would claim his rst win. “He works harder than anyone out here, so he deserves it. I gave it all I have, but he beat me fair and square. That Tharp, he’s a tough one to shake.” Like Tharp, McMillan ipped mats in the North Shore and Monkey Box areas. He too used a 1 1/2-ounce weight, although he preferred a Gambler creature bait called Why Not. In the subsequent investigation handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Don Gutshall, Clewiston police chief, said that it was not the rst time that the manager was reported to be acting in the role of a law enforce ment ofcer. During his interview with investiga tors, Chief Gutshall said that one of his own of cers spotted McKown out at night stopping cars with the ashing lights on his work vehicle. With the report completed, Hamid Hunter of the State Attorneys Ofce determined that the three felony charges McKown faced two counts of false impersonating an ofcer and one count of criminal actions under color of law -could not be pursued due to insufcient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. In his comments, Hunter urges the city to adopt a conduct policy regarding city ofcials and their use of badges. Report Response Mayor Rick Miller on Friday said he had yet to formally review the report, but said he was satised with the ndings of the State Attorney in the case. He remained critical of the FDLEs investigation. From what I heard, it was one-sided, said the mayor. He (Steve McKown) was given an opportunity to speak, but he wanted an attorney present and they werent interested that way. While he had not seen the report, the mayor said he had been receiving calls about its content. Ive had such a hard time (with the report), said Rick Miller. Ive never seen any evidence of those kinds of behavior at all. To me it seems out of character. Being around McKown more so than the other commissioners, the mayor reported, he has yet to see evidence of the type of character ization of the manager on display in the pages of the report. Like anyone, he has his faults, but hes very quick to correct, he said, stating that this is McK owns rst time as a city manager. He regretted that the report was made public. I think its un fortunate for the city, and it puts it in a bad light, the mayor said. But its out there and now we have to deal with it. I believe the State Attorneys Ofce, whether they decide to go forward or not, that does not mean that violations of law did not take place, said Commissioner Mali Gardner, who has been vocal in requesting a copy of the report. Beyond the report, she said she also had is sues with other items related to the city manager, reected in her inquiries into the use of city credit cards by key staff, namely the manager, and the citys recent award of a bonus for the manager in December, which she calls a violation of state law. In dealing with city government and in deal ing with city managers, there comes a point when you do trust the judgment of the city man ager, she offered. There comes a point when you have concerns. I hope that the commission ers will continue to ask questions. She said she will continue pushing the issue until the point that commissioners address her concerns. Meanwhile, Commissioner Julio Rodriguez reinforced his position that there is a need for greater transparency at the city. My concern is that were working with the lights off, said the commissioner, commenting that the report in question was requested by commissioners but had yet to be presented to them. The report wasnt available to us when it happened. Thats what concerns me. As a commissioner, its embarrassing that the public comes to me and questions things that are go ing on. For his part, the commissioner said he was not forming any decisions on the managers fu ture and would like to hear what his fellow com missioners have to say about the matter. I dont really know what the consequences will be at the moment, he said. Certainly Mali and I are in agreement about some of the things that were not comfortable on. There are some red ags that were concerned about. Im not on Commissioner Malis bandwagon, but we share the same opinion. He acknowledged that there is a difference of opinions between the divided commission, but hopes that the members of that commission will serve in a unied manner to get past the situ ation. Other people who work with McKown stood up to defend him. Ive never had any problems with him, said Tommy Perry, who serves as the citys engineer. I nd him to be an honest and forthright per son. Mr. Perry said he continues to be surprised that the resulting investigation is not laid to rest with the State Attorneys position. People made an allegation thats been inves tigated, found to be baseless, and we ought to move on from that, he said. It sure would be a shame for the mans job to be impacted because someone made baseless allegations. Mr. Perry continued, Well, everybody in the community knows that it was investigated and there was no reason to move forward. Some of the commissioners seem to not know that. Commissioner Joey Miller seemed to agree. Since Steves been on board, the city has moved in a positive direction every year. Hes a great ambassador to the city. I know theres just one side in the report but from my understanding, he broke up a ght. Is there criminal intent in break ing up a ght? No, I think he just broke up a ght. Any reasonable citizen would have tried to break up a ght, if not, somethings wrong. Responding to the part of the report that mentioned the city manager operating in the role of a law enforcement ofcer, Police Chief Don Gutshall responded. Anything that appears to be criminal in nature, I would follow up on it, he said. If I thought it had happened, I would have followed up on this. The city manager was contacted for his story but referred questions to his attorney. Valentin Rodriguez, representing McKown, said there would be no comment. We take the position that the State Attorney made the right decision in not charging him. He said his cli ents position will be muted, explaining that, although no charges were led, it doesnt mean charges cant be led. Online, where the document was released, a number of private citizens seemed ready to take up the issue at a future commission meeting. It was unclear at the time of this writing whether that was a genuine plan of action or a response to the immediate release of the report. The mayor offered last words. I certainly feel for the guy. I feel for him as a person. It feels like theres been an attack on his person and character, he said. Some of this will play out over time. He would, for instance, say that love is the only thing that can help you to clear, straight thinking. Lovelessness dims and dulls the mind; it is a sort of myopia which does literally prevent a man seeing beyond his own nose. His cosmos, as was said of some one, is all Ego; and he lives blind to the rest of reality. And so far from making you a sentimentalist love makes you a realist. For it is a pure illusion to say that love is blind. Love has eyes all round its head, and it sees truth that is hidden from the unloving. Someone has said that you cannot understand Wordsworth unless you love him, but that is universally true. You never truly understand anything or anybody that you do not love. Nor will you see or say the truth about men or things until you love them. And I am sure that the Apostle Paul would say concerning love that it is the only thing that can enable us to live effectually. The man who lives in pride and envy and hate is living on his moral capital, for these things bring no return to his soul. But love is that strange commodity whereof the more you give the more you have. Every word or act of love adds to your moral reserves: mercy which is part of love. It is twice blessed and it blesseth him who gives and him who takes. It is like some shining seaway that bears on the waves rich argosies that come and go with precious cargoes never diminished, enriching both him who sells and him who buys. Some day we shall be wise enough to see that it is better to make a friend than to make a fortune, to have cultivated a genius for fellowship than to have acquired laurels of fame, to become rich in love than to be replete with things. Life does not consist in having a good hand, but in playing a bad hand well. And most of us have bad hands hands made bad by our own folly and perversity and indolence; but there is a secret for playing bad hands well. And it is just this that Paul is speaking of here. Love means “to seek the highest good!”Heart LoveBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchTry this! Put your ngertips from your right hand up against the ngertips of your left hand. You have just made a bridge. But if you bend your ngertips together, and let your joined thumb tips drop a little downward, your hands create a heart. How you formed this heart with your hands is what Heart Love is all about it joins together and bends a little to meet the other. Heart Love is a love that gives of itself to another person then forgets the favor rendered. It is a love that nds something to love in the seemingly unlovable. Heart Love states, “I love you and I want you to be happy and to achieve the fullest stature of your being.” Heart Love is what God has given us, and is what we are called to give the world. One night on Broadway, Mary Martin was preparing to go on stage, as she had a 1,000 times before in Rodger & Hammerstein’s South Paci c Just before she took stage a note was handed her. The note was short. It simply said: “Dear Mary, A bell’s not a bell until you ring it. A song’s not a song until you sing it. Love in your heart is not put there to stay. Love isn’t love till you give it away.” The letter was signed by Oscar Hammerstein, who was that evening on his deathbed. When the play was over the cast rushed her backstage and asked, “What happened? We’ve never seen you perform that way before?” Mary read to them Hammerstein’s note and said, “Tonight, I gave my love away.” Make the heart again with your hands and put it up to your face. Take a look around and imagine taking a snapshot through your hand heart of everything and everyone around you. The challenge before us is to continue to look at the world and people around us through our Heart Love perspective that others might know and experience God’s Heart Love through us. Remember, we are not necessarily called to like everyone, but we are called to love them. (Check out 1 John 4:7-8) The ones we love are not supposed to be perfect, but it is the choice to love others and give love away that matures and perfects each one of us as Christians.Putting Sickness BehindBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchBea Arthur, when she played “Maude” on TV was noted for her snappy comebacks and putdowns. Every once and awhile she’d run out of things to say in response to someone where she was attempting to one-up. Her parting shot when at a loss for a reply was, “God’ll get you for that!” It was as if that God could be somehow invoked to punish those who disagreed with her or when all else fails, point out that the challenger was going to get it because that was what God would have wanted. It was comic. When at a loss for words, invoke God to punish others. Some cynic has said, “Life is a downer, then you die!” That’s too bad he feels that way. He doesn’t see that his life is not the end; that even if all sorts of bad things happen here, there is a life to come where it will be immensely better. Nor does he see that life here is not all bad. In fact, for most of us there are things that we regard as “bad” but also things to be seen as “good.” Then there is hope; that there will be a respite from things that upset us or cause us difculties, or make us ill or handicap us in some way. Most of all, that’s not God’s nature nor His relation with us. Two individuals are mentioned in the New Testament who suffer from “demon possession.” (Matthew 8:28ff) We might nd another explanation for their illness today but what is obvious is that they were suffering. Their “possession” caused them to be so violent that people were afraid to even be around them. When Jesus dares to pass nearby, they shouted, “What have you to do with us Son of God” and “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Their questions betray what the world has done to them. There is no expectation that God’s son will make anything better. They expect that even more torture will follow because of His encounter with them. They anticipate an end of suffering; the “appointed time” will bring it and they worry that more will be in icted upon them in the meantime. That, of course, isn’t what happened. They are rid of their “demons” and healed. Cynicism has no place in the understanding of what the Lord is about, why He came, what He set out to do. It is understandable why they feel the way they do. We are not here to suffer, to be negative, to fear the life to come as a threat rather than a heavenly blessing. God, indeed, is not out to get anybody. Those who see Him as other than loving, forgiving, compassionate, kind, caring need to rid themselves of the “demons” that have (mis) shaped their understanding of His true nature. RELIGION COLUMNS
