Mild winter could have anglers eyeing record weightsBY FLWFor most people in the United States, February is when slightly warmer days begin to appear in place of fading winter. But for the best bass pros on the planet February means a hot bite, big bass and the beginning of another exciting FLW Tour season. The Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude will visit Clewiston, Fla., Feb. 9-12 for the rst tournament of its 17th season. Hosted by Roland & Mary Ann Martin's Marina & Resort, the tournament will feature a full eld of the world's best bass pros and coanglers casting for top awards up to $125,000 cash in the Pro Division and up to $25,000 cash in the Coangler Division. FLW Tour anglers haven't competed on Lake Okeechobee since the February 2011 season opener, and National Guard pro Scott Martin is eagerly anticipating this year's kickoff. The Clewiston resident has shed these waters for years and knows them like the back of his hand. Martin also has some tournament momentum behind him, as well. He won the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup and $600,000 in August on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Ark. Soon torrents of water plunged earthward in a grey deluge, ooding creeks and lakes that enveloped the Kissimmee River, turning it into a vast sheet of owing water. The cascading river moved ever southward to Lake Okeechobee, carrying a watery avalanche of grasses, scrubs and trees in its wet tentacles. Custard apple forest nestled along the lakes southern boundaries rapidly surrendered to the owing uid horde as it expanded and swept through the infamous Everglades to the sea. Drainage of wetlands for agriculture and ur ban development would eventually bring an end to the prescribed water ow into Lake Okeecho bee and the Everglades. The citizens of yesterday that participated in the drainage and demise of this natural inland waterway, envisioned that their fruits of labor would bear future prosperity for all. It is unfortunate that they had no way of see ing the results of their deeds through the pas sage of time. Come join the Hendry-Glades Audubon So ciety at the Clewiston Museum on Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. for a presentation by Mary-Bird Hansen of the Ah-Tha-Thi-Ki Museum and Boardwalk about an Audubon Special. Then the guest speaker, Dr. Paul Gray, will present The Human and Natural History of Okeechobee, an historical insight into Lake Okeechobees rich past as well as an environ mental perspective to its future. Mr. Gray will relate the lakes history through the eyes of a naturalist and expound on the many intricate environmental issues that cur rently challenge Lake Okeechobee. Dr. Paul Gray is the Science Coordinator of Audubon of Floridas Lake Okeechobee Water shed Program. He has been employed with Audubon for 17 years and worked around Lake Okeechobee with agencies and stakeholders on Okeecho bee water management, water quality, aquatic plants and re management since 1988. Dr. Gray has also written numerous popular and technical articles on Okeechobee-related is sues. Dont miss this opportunity to learn about Lake Okeechobees natural history and the envi ronmental issues it faces today and learn about the Ah-Tha-Thi-Ki Museum and Boardwalks Audubon Special. Please contact the Clewiston Museum at 863983-2870 or e-mail us at clewistonmuseum@ embarqmail for questions or reservations. The Human and Natural History of Lake Okeechobee Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have risen 7.4 cents per gallon in the past week, aver aging $3.54/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.39/g, according to gasoline price website. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 45.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 24.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 13.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 30.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. Late last week we saw wholesale gasoline prices rise dramatically on some renery issues, which leads me to believe that retail gasoline prices will rise in response, said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. We continue to also watch how Iran re sponds to EU sanctionsthere are some con cerns that they may cut oil to the European re gion before the sanctions are to take effect to cause these countries hardship when they cant nd new sources of oil quickly enough. That in itself could draw crude oil prices higher quickly at a moments notice, DeHaan said. Gas Prices Rise Again

Two to three months later, it’s time to harvest — most of it by hand. Garrison, Legion, Passion, Obsession and Supersweet, to name a few varieties, are ready to be picked. Corn grows well in many places in the world. In fact, it grows on every continent except Antarctica. What corn needs most is fertile, welldrained, moist soil. Corn is often planted after short season crops, such as sugar cane, green beans and rice. The United States is the largest producer of corn in the world. It’s also typically ranked as one of Florida’s most valuable vegetable crops. Others include tomatoes, snap beans, bell peppers and cucumbers. According to UF Extension, “Florida ranks No. 1 nationally in the production and value of fresh market sweet corn, typically accounting for approximately 20 percent of both national sweet corn production and of U.S. cash receipts for fresh sales.” Furthermore, 589 million pounds of fresh sweet corn, valued at $189 million, was produced on 42,100 acres in Florida during the 200910 season (Sources: USDA and the Florida Sweet Corn Crop pro le, 2011). The Everglades area — Belle Glade, South Bay and Pahokee — has more than half of the state’s sweet corn production, while Miami-Dade, Hendry and Collier counties have about a quarter. Although sweet corn seems like the perfect crop to grow, as with any crop it has its challenges, such as insects, diseases and weather conditions. “Insects are a big challenge, especially worms, and a relatively new pest: the corn silk y,” said Gene McAvoy, Hendry County extension director. He explained that the y feeds on the silk, while the larvae disrupt pollination and reduce kernel density. “There are about 42 different insects of concern for corn growers, such as the corn earworm, the lesser cornstalk borer, aphids, wireworms and cucumber beetles — many of which can literally eat the crop to the ground or render it unmarketable,” said McAvoy. Insecticides are applied via airplanes and tractor-drawn ground sprayers. “The fall armyworm that favors drought conditions is a worm we often have to contend with,” said Pablo Sanchez, who has 1,500 acres in Hendry County, 500 of which are used to grow several varieties of white, yellow and bi-color corn, while the rest of the acreage grows green beans, squash and broccoli. Besides pests, there are also diseases to worry about, such as the common and southern rust, and the Northern and the Southern corn leaf blight. “We use fungicides when blights and rusts appear,” said Sanchez who explained that with blight, kernels don’t reach their potential, while with rust, the plants lose their greenness and become weak. “In addition to fungicides, there’s also sanitation and other cultural practices, as well as resistant varieties as available,” said McAvoy. However, what is impossible to control is the weather. Frosts and freezes — including the most recent in early January — and heat and drought can impact quality or ruin crops. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, La Nia is expected to continue through this winter. The condition brings on warmer than normal temperatures in the Southeast and cooler than normal temperatures in the Northwest. “Drier weather can result in drought and water shortages, especially when Lake Okeechobee falls to critical levels and the South Florida Water Management District institutes water allocation reductions,” said McAvoy. Adequate water is important for the growth of sweet corn, especially during periods of silking and tasseling and of ear development. “We use wells and other sources of water and pump it in,” said Sanchez, who plants corn virtually all year long. “Irrigation, primarily by furrow, a.k.a. ‘seepage irrigation,’” is also used, said McAvoy, who mentioned that some growers in Homestead use big gun sprinkler irrigation. Unfortunately, La Nia’s warmer, drier temperatures may mean, especially for later planters, a disappointing yield. Florida, Hendry, Sweet on Corn

BY ROBERT H. WELLS UFOpportunities for jobs in agriculture abound, USDA Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Merrigan told University of Florida students and faculty Thursday. “We actually have a gap between the number of quali ed graduates and the kind of jobs that w e need to ll in American agriculture,” Merrigan said. “And the need, from the projections I’ve seen, is only going to become greater.” Merrigan’s speech was part of a Florida tour that includes promoting the USDA initiative Know Y our Farmer, Know Your Food, which seeks to reconnect agricultural producers and consumers. She spoke to a crowd of 200, many of them students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. CALS is a part of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Available jobs, Merrigan said, include openings for more young farmers. “We know people are leaving the farm, and w e need to repopulate it,” she said. “Farmers are aging … and they’re not sure who to pass the farm on to.” “There are opportunities for all of you,” Merrigan added. She also addressed the disconnect between consumers and food producers. “Sometimes when I talk to people, they’re like ‘agriculture? That’s the farmers and the ranchers,’” she said. “And I say, ‘No. It’s everyone.’” One way to reconnect producers and consumers, she said, is through a pilot project USDA participates in known as Farm to School that is being tested in Florida and Michigan. The project allows schools to buy local food for school meals. With buying locally grown food a hot topic these days, Merrigan said she is optimistic about the future of the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative. “There’s never been a time in my professional life when people were more interested in where their food comes from and how it was produced,” she said. “We have a renaissance of interest in American agriculture.” Elaine Turner, an associate dean with CALS, said the federal initiative is one UF can support, and there may be ways UF can partner with USD A on its implementation. “There’s a lot of interest in local food here in Gainesville,” Turner said. “But because we are statewide, we have the opportunity to help make this initiative even more visible.” After the speech in Gainesville, which was held at UF’s Straughn Extension Professional Development Center, Merrigan continued her tour Friday with stops in Lake City and Jacksonville. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. Don’t Follow the Course of Least ResistanceBY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchDo you realize it takes more effort to go up than it does down? Try climbing a mountain, or even going up the stairs. Then think of it in reference to going down. You hardly have to do anything to go down. In fact, you can slip, stumble or fall, then down you go! You fall down, not up. Contrariwise, considerable efforts and energy must be expended to go up and to continue to go up; going down, none. Now transfer these thoughts to the realm of the spiritual. If we would go to Heaven it is an upward journey. To go to the other way is all down. Never forget this. The Apostle Paul looked at initial obedience in baptism (Colossians 2:12), and continued to say, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Col. 3:1). The Apostle Peter’s admonition in 2 Peter 1:511 ts right in with what Paul said (and heeding it, we will eventually end up in Heaven.) “Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” The word “diligence” stands out here. We put forth a decided effort, as we grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord, thereby seeking and moving toward those things that are above. Peter de nitely says that, “If ye do these things, ye shall never fall.” However, Hebrews 2:3 asks the sobering question, which to ask is to answer, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?” So the wise thing is to keep on going and growing!Pirates and Seals: And Why There is a DifferenceBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThere is well-earned praise for the Seal Team that freed two hostages from “pirates” in Somalia recently. Commentators spoke about heroes and “pirates” who were really just common criminals. Nine of them were killed, their hostages were returned to families and for needed medical treatment. I thought about that act of kidnapping. It was seen as a kind of “fund-raiser” for the lifestyle of the kidnappers; no regard for the sanctity of human life, people to be bought and sold, stealing people is all right, if your victim has medical needs – well, that’s just too bad. The pirates-kidnappers had no respect for life, property, the feelings of others, what it takes to live beyond your own sel sh whims. Somehow, somewhere they had never learned respect, the sacredness of life, the worth of human beings, their responsibility to their maker, that what we do on this earth has a purpose, and points the way to a greater life. Then, I thought about our society. Each night, as I listen to the news, I also hear about the taking of life, violence, about people who mistreat the helpless and victimize the handicapped, of drug abuse leading to all sorts of crime. I see that we, too, have elements with no respect for life, property, the feelings of others, and what it takes to live beyond sel sh whims. Then there are stories of those who risk their lives and well-being for the sake of others; digging someone out of an avalanche, rescuing kidnapped victims, feeding to the hungry, providing spare hours to build homes for the homeless; countless times when such activities never make the news. It occurs to me there are those who have heard a message rooted in the values of the faith on which the country is founded and have seen the great triumphs faith can bring. They have not been sti ed by fear of offending, by sel shness, by drifting aimlessly in an amoral atmosphere, by indifference to “being involved.” They have learned values and the meaning of life. When I saw immigrants, one of the questions they’d sometimes ask me had to do with the learning of the values on which the country is founded. Their children didn’t seem to be getting them in school, their communities didn’t celebrate the great holidays with roots in faith that they knew back home, there seemed to be reluctance to talk about things related to faith or belief. The book of Acts speaks of a world where those who laid the foundations for our values “devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer (Acts 2:42ff).” They shared, believed, acted on their beliefs, and “the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved(v.47).” The opportunities still are with us; the Churches they founded give what we are really all about; why we’re here and are the real antidote to what we need if life is to be abundant as intended.Granny’s LetterBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchIs that which I think I’m saying really saying what I want to say? It can get confusing. I may know what I’m saying, but do others? As Christians, it’s easy talking “Christian” with other Christians, but the terms we use may be foreign to those around us. For example, there is this humorous story of Granny’s letter. Got a letter from Grandma the other day in which she writes: The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a “Honk if you love Jesus” bumper sticker. I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, I’m glad I did! What an uplifting experience that followed! Stopped by a red light at a busy intersection, I got lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is and didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed! I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind me started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, “For the love of GOD! GO! GO!” What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a “sunny beach.” I saw another guy waving in a funny way with one nger stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I’ve never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My grandson burst out laughing. Even he was enjoying this religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking toward me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but then I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers, grinning, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again, and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe most widespread and abundant waterfowl in Florida during the winter is the American Coot. They will gather in huge groups called “covers” or “rafts” for protection and socialization. They seldom remain in Florida to breed. It takes a lot of effort for a Coot to y. They pedal across the water with their feet before lifting off. Once airborne they have enough stamina to make the long ight to their summer breeding grounds. These birds have been called “marsh hen” or “mud hen” because they bob their heads when they walk or swim. The adult is all black with a triangular chicken-like white bill with a black mark near the tip. There is a white strip on the sides of their undertail. The downy young have a bald red head, but are dull gray instead of black with a light face and chest. The American Coot swims like a duck, but doesn’t have webbed feet. They have toes connected by webs. Each toe has lobes on the side of each segment. Their calls are scratchy clucking noises and “kuk-kuk-kuk” notes. Inland Florida has reported some of the highest tallies for American Coots during nationally recognized bird counts over the past 5 years. During the 2010 Christmas Bird Count (CBC), STA5 reported more than 70,000 Coots, which was the U.S. high count during the 111th CBC. Over 100,000 American Coots were observed during the Dec. 31, 2011 CBC at STA5. American Coots are reported annually by adults and students at inland locations around Lake Okeechobee during the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) held President’s Day weekend. For the past ve years, Clewiston has earned the recognition as one of the “Top Ten” cities reporting the most individual birds in the U.S. and Canada. At least half of the birds reported at Clewiston locations were American Coots. Become a “Citizen Scientist” and help report American Coots and other bird species during the 2012 GBBC. Just submit your daily 15 minute or more observations for any or all days during Feb. 17-20 at the GBBC web site at www.birdsource.org/ gbbc. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers in their search for American Coot and other birds during birding trips to STA5 located 20 miles south of Clewiston. For reservations for these free trips or to request information about the Feb. 17-20 Great Backyard Bird Count contact Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863674-0695 or 863-517-0202. Visit the HGAS web site at www.hendrygladesaudubon.org or the Hendry-Glades Audubon. The Big “O” Birding Festival will be held Mar. 28-31. Join us for the largest bird-themed event in South Central Florida, located on the Southwest shores of Lake Okeechobee, the state’s largest lake. Wide vistas of blue skies, oak-canopied rivers, quaint small antique towns and farming communities offer visitors a taste of inland Florida. Some of the state’s rarest plants and animals are found here including the Snail Kite, Florida Scrub Jay and Florida panther. BY BOB WATTENDORF FWCMany anglers target black crappie during the cooler months in Florida. Nonresident anglers avoiding the deeper chill up north congregate around these premier sheries every winter to join Florida's own shers who enjoy pursuing and harvesting the succulent pan shes. Crappies are high-pro le sh with their own enthusiasts. CrappieUSA kicked off its 2012 season with an event at Flagler County's Crescent Lake in January. Darrell Van Vactor, president of CrappieUSA, said, "The 2.63-pound crappie that won the big sh award on Crescent Lake was de nitely a great crappie. In more than 25 years of crappie tournaments all over Florida, it is the best single sh weighed in, and the winning weight of 14.5 pounds for seven sh was also the best winning weight." He went on to say, "Crescent Lake is truly the best crappie water we have found in your state, and your agency is evidently doing a great management job there." Bass Pro Shops Crappie Master Tournament Trail will have its Florida State Championship in February on the Harris Chain of Lakes around Tavares. Anglers can nd books, magazines, web sites and television shows dedicated to great crappie shing. The fast action, once you have located a school, makes crappie a great sh for families and youth. Black crappies are also known as "speckled perch" or "specks" and are silver-white, speckled all over with black blotches. The sh are deep-bodied with two symmetrical ns along the top and bottom of the body. The Florida state record is 3.83 pounds, and the Big Catch Angler Recognition qualifying size is 14 inches or 2 pounds. Steward points out that reports from local anglers, as well as data from trawling, electro shing and creel surveys compiled by sheries biologists, and knowledge of habitat trends all go into selecting these lakes. The list focuses on larger water bodies that have good access and can sustain more shing effort, so even if your local lake isn't on the list, don't be afraid to try it. One of the best things about crappie shing in Florida is that you can nd them in almost all of our lakes. Unlike many pan sh, crappies spend much of their time offshore, feeding on small sh. Successful anglers drift through deeper water, shing with small minnows or freshwater grass shrimp until they nd a school. Try a light wire #4 hook and small split shot below a oat. Speck anglers typically use several rods or poles, shing at different depths until they pinpoint concentrations of sh. In the extreme, these are referred to as "spider rigs" for the way the rods look like spider legs sticking out from all sides of the boat. Specks move inshore to spawn during early spring, gathering in large numbers around heavy cover. Crappie also strike arti cial baits. Tipping a jig with a live minnow makes it especially effective. Night shing for crappie with baits shed near a light can produce nice stringers, especially once it warms up. After black bass, crappies are the second-most popular freshwater species in Florida, followed by bream, in terms of angler effort. Angler success rates over the past ve years averaged approximately 1.2 crappie per hour statewide (compared with 1.9 for bream and 0.7 for bass). Crappie provide a great shing opportunity, especially this time of year, and can be an exciting way to introduce new anglers both young and old to the lifetime sport of shing. Moreover, many anglers think they are one of the tastiest of freshwater shes, so give them a try. Black Crappie Fishing Hot in Florida’s SUBMITTED PHOTO

The Inaugural Love the Lake 5k / 10k will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8 a.m. up at Roland and MaryAnn Martin’s Marina & Resort. This event does so much for so many, for starter’s it helps bring awareness to our co-host: Rotary Club of Clewiston’s tness trail, on the outskirts of the boat parking area up at the lake. We were surprised to nd how few really knew or took advantage of this tness trail in which we hope this raises the awareness about heart health. A healthy heart should never be taken for granted and Darius Redd, a big part of our inspiration for the Love the Lake 5K / 10K knows this all too well. Darius is a Clewiston teen that has been awaiting a heart-transplant since falling ill after coming home from football camp this past summer. A portion of the proceeds from this event will bene t the Darius Redd heart transplant fund. Love the Lake 5K / 10K is also raising the awareness for the “Love the Lake” campaign that was rst introduced to us by one of our neighbors the Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce. We couldn’t be happier to be a part of it, by displaying the “Love the Lake” logo we are saying to all of our neighboring municipalities that border Lake Okeechobee that we are part of the same team. This will encourage all of our neighbors around the lake to be better informed. When you know better you do better. Love your heart and come on out and Love the Lake Feb. 18. Okeechobee. “The shing got better. And it stayed better all throughout the spring and the summertime, and it never slowed down, and now we’re back into the springtime again and the sh are just bigger. There seems to be more of them and more 30-pound bags weighed in at local events right now than I’ve ever seen. The potential for having some of the records fall is very likely. “I’m in shorts and a T-shirt as we speak,” Martin added. “The water temperatures have been v ery consistent. We haven’t had a big cold front at all, so these sh are really going to start spawning and really be active this week.” Martin said he expects the tournament to focus on spawning bass and ipping baits, however, he added that anglers will be presented with opportunities to use a variety of techniques and baits. When asked about the Alabama rig, the hot topic controversial bait system that took the tournament world by storm at last year’s Lake Guntersville Tour event, Martin offered his opinion with no hesitation. “I don’t think the Alabama rig will be a factor,” Martin said. As the reigning Forrest L. Wood Cup champion, one might think that he has a target on his back and every angler in the eld will be looking to dethrone him, but Martin doesn’t think that’s the case. “This is Lake Okeechobee,” Martin said. “There’s so many good places to sh right now on this lake and so many different ways to catch them that I’m going to really have to put my thinking cap on and buckle down and nd the winning pattern and the winning sh. There’s going to be lots of guys catch them. “Tournaments are tournaments,” Martin added. “These guys aren’t focusing on beating me. Fishing is shing. You’ve got to beat the sh. That’s what it always boils down to. I don’t think I have a target on my back to say the least. Everybody’s going to be going against the sh. The guys who sh against the sh are the guys that are going to do well. The guys that sh to try to beat some other angler … that’s the wrong attitude.” In FLW Tour competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Forrest L. Wood Cup, the world championship of bass shing. This year’s Cup will be in Duluth/Gainesville, Ga., Aug. 9-12 on Lake Lanier and anglers could win as much as $500,000 – the sport’s biggest award. Anglers are also vying for the prestigious 2012 Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year presented by Kellogg’s title that will be determined by the most points accumulated over the six Tour Majors. Anglers will take off from Roland & Mary Ann Martin’s Marina & Resort located at 920 East Del Monte Ave. in Clewiston at 7:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday morning and from the Clewiston Boat Basin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday morning. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will also be held at Roland & Mary Ann Martin’s Marina & Resort beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s nal weigh-ins will be held at the Walmart located at 1005 West Sugarland Hwy. in Clewiston beginning at 4 p.m. Fans will be treated to the FLW Outdoors Expo at the Walmart on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. prior to the nal weigh-ins. The Expo includes Ranger boat simulators, the opportunity to interact with professional anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by sponsors, and fans can learn more about the sport of shing and other outdoor activities. All activities are free and open to the public. As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, select FLW Tour anglers will be speaking to third grade students at Eastside Elementary School located at 201 West Arroyo Ave. in Clewiston from 9-10 a.m. Feb. 8. The anglers’ wrapped boats and tow vehicles also will be on display at the school. Coverage of the Lake Okeechobee tournament will be broadcast in high-de nition (HD) on NBC Sports Network when “FLW” airs Mar. 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. ET. “FLW” is hosted by Jason Harper and is broadcast to more than 559 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.
