"Committed to Faithfully Serving the Readers of Clewiston and Hendry County"

Vol. 85, Number 61 50 cents

Are the paranormal among us?

Paranormal
investigators
attend conference

By Juan Lopez
The Clewiston News
Technology and the spirit of
cooperation fuel the quest for evi-
dence of the existence of spirit be-
ings at the Clewiston Inn. For two
full days, paranormal teams and
special guest speakers gathered for
the Fourth Annual Florida Ghost
Gathering that was hosted by the
Paranormal Information Associa-
tion. More than 80 people, forming
approximately 10 teams, attended
the two-day event.
"I am extremely happy that the
event was such a success," said
Morgan Beall, P.I.A. administrator
and lead organizer of the event.
"The turnout was great and the
guest speakers came on their own
accord."
Of the guest speakers who at-
tended, Cryptozoologist Scott Mar-
lowe was a great highlight of the
event. His passion for the pursuit
of the scientific explanation to all

things unexplained has fueled his
career for 35 years. The impression
he makes is that of a real life Indi-
ana Jones. He even admitted that

his only fear is that of snakes. He
has also traveled around the globe
hunting for evidence behind sight-
ings of enigmatic creatures.

When asked if he believed if the
Clewiston Inn was haunted he re-
sponded, "I wouldn't be a bit sur-
prised. I do believe that there are

multi-dimensional beings and that
a residue remains when a person
dies."
He continued, "However, there
is nothing out there to be afraid of.
I do what I do to solve the mystery,
to bring a scientific explanation to
it."
The paranormal investigations
of the Clewiston Inn began on Sat-
urday night and carried over into
early Sunday morning. However,
over the weekend several teams
had conducted their own investi-
gations at other sites spread over
Hendry and Glades counties. The
second floor conference room of
the inn was the command center
for the entire event. Ian Hickin,
founder of Florida Paranormal Re-
search, and host of "Saturday Night
Paranormal," a weekly live web
broadcast that encourages view-
ers to participate with questions
and advice during the broadcast,
and several social paranormal in-
vestigation networks, was excited
about the event and how it was
being broadcast live since early
that morning. What was quite im-

Malnourished horses create disturbing sight

Six horses die, 10 more
horribly malnourished

By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Glades County Democrat
The bodies of five horses were found by
Seminole Police Officers on a property at the
Big Cypress Indian Reservation last week.

The horses seemed to feature the tell-tale
signs of malnourishment, a police officer's
report reveals.
As they walked through the property, of-
ficers found a horse dead, and then another,
and another.
Some of the horses had been dragged
across the ground for long distances, after
having been tied to an old pick up truck

when they died.
Confronted with the evidence, the own-
ers reportedly blamed the economy for why
their horses had died. The gruesome discov-
ery was made last Wednesday, Aug. 25 at
31301 Wind Clan Road, Big Cypress, follow-
ing a report of two dead horses at the site.
When they got there, officers found 10
horses that were "extremely malnourished."

According to the report, the horses had only
dirty water to drink and a very small amount
of hay to eat.
In the horse stalls, authorities found the
first of the dead horses.
"The carcass was merely bones and skin,

Speak Out: Clewiston Cougar Mity Mite team

I'm a first-year parent of a Clewiston foot-
ball player and I along with other parents are
really upset with the Head Coach of the Mity
Mite team (Coach Jose) and the President of
the Clewiston Pop Warner (Al Gary)!
I took the first step and asked one of the
parents that I know has been out here with
her son since he was the age of five years
old. I made her aware of the fact that the
kids were not getting enough water. I wasn't
sure if that was normal or abnormal so I fig-
ured I'd ask another parent. One of her sons
is also a team member on the same team
with my son.
Well she advised me that the coaches are
suppose to give the kids water several times
throughout practice and they cannot deny a
child of water if they ask a coach. She left her
older son's practice field to come and check
out things for herself and she noticed the

same thing was going on that I explained to
her. After sitting and waiting for a period of
30 min. she asked the coach if he was going
to give them any water, Coach Jose replied
they don't need any water I gave them water
at the beginning of practice 5:15 p.m. and it
was 7 p.m.! I was afraid to talk to the presi-
dent because I never see him and when I do
see him he's always on the move. I again
asked the same parent to talk to him for all
of the other concern mothers and fathers
that has a problem with this coach! The par-
ent came back to us and explain what Al
Gary had to say and it sound very convinc-
ing but nothing has changed! I observed the
coach using profanity with another parent in
front of our children because she was upset
about the head coach running our kids as
if they were high schoolers and not giving
them any water!

I asked the other young lady that I have
been speaking to for advise has she ever ex-
perienced anything like this before and she
said no, Coach Emmanuel Terry (E-Dog)
was the Head Coach for this team for two
years and the head coach of the Tiny Mites
for two years before that and not only was
he a good coach he was like a good father
figure for her son and all the other kids. This
will be my son's first and last year playing for

I must say Coaches Donny and Tommy
are outstanding coaches but they should
stand up for the kids and what's right! AL

Two Words
By Jackie Miller
Evangelist, First Christian Church
We refer to the words .i. i "
and -,i. ii ''. In the realms of logic
and philosophy they are opposites. If
something is i 1. i ', it is a concept
based on provable facts, whereas if
something is -., I. ii it is based on
the way an individual personally views
it. The .1 i I. i is always correct' the
, il i. -i may or may not be correct
depending on each case.
All religious faith should be based

upon the .i -i. i and not the "sub-
jective". We believe in life after death
because the Bible teaches it (the "ob-
jective"), not because we feel like it (the
.1i .1. 1. J. We believe that baptism
is for the remission of sins because the
Bible teaches it (the .1.1 h. i. while
some reject it because they don't think
it is necessary ("subjective"). We have
known charismaticc" to say when
shown what the [.,I I. ,. .. I11 "Holy
Spirit Baptism", "That may be what
the Bible says, but you can't tell me I
haven't been baptized with the Holy
Spirit." This is basing one's religion on
his own feelings i .il.i,. i1 '), rather

than the Word of God 1 ..1i 1i. ').
Let us be reminded that faith rests
on the Word of God ("faith cometh by
hearing, and hearing by the Word of
God" -Romans 10:17), the Word of God
being a message from God to man to
be understood by the recognized laws
of understanding communications.
But I. I,-' rests on a person's
own experience and personal thoughts
which may be colored by his/her own
prejudices and inclinations.So what we
believe and practice religiously should
be based on the Word of God. It was
in this sense that the Jewish Bereans
were commended for searching their

Scriptures rather than their I.. In., '
to determine whether the message
Paul was preaching was correct (Acts
17:11-12).But does this mean there is
no place in our religious life for the
There is a place, and it is a very im-
portant matter to every Christian. Why
should people with the unbiblical,
unprovable beliefs have all the "feel-
ings" of being right? Shouldn't people
believing right and doing right have
right feelings about what they believe
and do? The Ethiopian "went on his
way rejoicing" after his baptism (Acts
2:39) as did the Philippian jailer (Acts

16:34).
While the -,l.i. i approach
does not prove anything to others, it
surely is a confirmation to the individ-
ual himself.
For instance, we believe in the res-
urrection of Jesus because of what
we read in the Bible \.11. h 1, '),
yet, a Christian can appropriately sing,
"He lives! He lives! He lives within my
heart!", and that fact can be born out in
Galatians 2:20.
To keep the record straight, a per
son should not say, "I'm right because
I 'feel' right," but, "I 'feel' right because
I am right."

Answer Me This
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
1) What is greater than God and more evil
than the devil? The poor have it, the rich need
it, and if you eat it you'll die. 2) Who am I? God
made Adam out of dust, but thought it best to
make me first: So I was made before the man,
according to God's holy plan. My whole body
God made complete, without arms or hands or
feet. My ways and acts did God control, but in my
body He placed no soul. A living being I became,
and Adam gave to me a name. Later, for a pur-
pose God did see, He placed a living soul in me.
But that soul of mine God had to claim and from
me He took it back again. And when this soul
from me had fled, I was the same as when first
made; Without arms, legs, feet, or soul, I travel
on from pole to pole. So get your Bible and read
with care; you'll find my name recorded there. 3)
If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who
had eight kids already, three who were deaf, two
who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she
had syphilis; would you recommend that she
have an abortion? 4) It's time to elect a new world
leader, and your vote counts. Here are the facts
about the three leading candidates: Candidate

A: Associates with crooked politicians, and con-
sults with astrologists. He's had two mistresses.
He also chain smokes and drinks eight to ten
martinis a day. Candidate B: Was kicked out of
office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in col-
lege and drinks a quart of whisky every evening.
Candidate C: He's a decorated war hero, a veg-
etarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer
and hasn't had any extramarital affairs.
Which of these candidates would be your
choice? Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Candidate B is Winston Churchill. Candidate
C is Adolph Hitler. And by the way: Answer to the
abortion question-if you said yes, you just killed
Beethoven. The answer to question two: Whale or
Leviathan. Created before humans (Genesis 1:20-
23), named by Adam (Genesis 2:19), Swallowed
Jonah (a living soul). "Nothing" is the answer to
the riddle of question one. Nothing is greater than
God or more evil than the devil. Poor people have
nothing and rich people need nothing. And if you
eat nothing you will die. The chapters existing
before Psalm 118: 594. The chapters of the Bible
after Psalm 118: 594. The two together total 1188.
What's the verse at the very center of the Bible?
Psalm 118:8. "It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in man." The very center of the Bible
reminds us to trust in God over trusting in ourselves
or other people. Good solution to any question!

The sword or the shield?
By Rev. Samuel S. Thomas, Ph. D.
Saint Martin's Church
We've barely got through some of our prima-
ry elections and some of the struggle to get new
leadership is behind. I've heard sufficiently about
"If I'm elected..." and I'm sure that "Round 2"
will be the same. These are the people that gov-
ern, pass laws, enact legislation that affects the
fiber of our counties, country, place in the world.
Their means of exercising their work and views,
is through the legislative process passing laws.
"The law can become a shield or a sword." It
can be used as a means to protect those in need,
those who have nobody to look after their best
interests, those who might suffer at the hands of
others; or it might become a weapon to force
the will of one group on another, to exploit, to
dominate from a particular stance on issues. In
one case it is a defender, in the other it can be a
tyrant. There is an interesting confrontation in the
New Testament: it is between Jesus and an "ex-
pert in the law." (Luke 10:25ff). The expert seeks
an opinion about his final reward and what he
must do to find Heaven. The answer comes in the
form of a question from Jesus; "What is written
in the law? (v.26)" The correct answer was given;
the law cited was that we are to love God and love

our neighbors. The passage goes on to empha-
size that being a neighbor means showing mercy.
The lesson involves outcasts of their day and the
lack of mercy shown by those whom one ordi-
narily might be expected to help. In other words,
"everyone is my neighbor." Note, these greatest
of laws are about helping, serving, loving, caring
- a "shield" and not a "sword." Paul asks in Ga-
latians (chapter 3, vss 19ff) asks "What, then was
the purpose of the law?" He explains that it serves
as a guide until the promise of God has come. It
is not opposed to God's promise for us (vs. 21)
but to lead us to what the Lord would bring (vs.
24), to point us toward a fuller, happier, satisfying
life; a law to protect and a shield from things that
would keeping us from having the good, God-in-
tended life. There is no "perfect candidate" who
would support everything I believe, or who car
ries out what would be the greatest good for the
greatest number. As I listened to the various ad-
vertisements during our recent primary election
campaigns; my rule of thumb about the use of
legislative power came to mind more than once.
I would ask myself "Is this going to help?" or "Is
there another agenda that will likely come to the
surface?" As one who holds a certain public of
fice, I regard my work as a sacred trust: help oth
ers and put personal agendas last. I hope those
running for other public offices will do likewise!

Dehydration and Heat

Exhaustion

By Pat Dobbins
Hot temperatures and high humidity
means lots of sweating and increases your
chance of dehydration. To avoid becoming
dehydrated, it is important to drink plenty
of fluids, especially water (even if you don't
feel thirsty).
Depending upon your physical activ-
ity and heat exposure during hot weather,
it's a good idea to drink even more water.
According to health experts, fluid require-
ments vary from person to person.
Please keep in mind that people with
medical conditions such as kidney disease,
heart disease, or those who require a fluid
restricted diet or who have problems with
fluid retention should consult a physician
before increasing their fluid consumption.
Knowing the signs of dehydration and
knowing what to do, is very important.
Signs of dehydration can include excessive
thirst, headache, weakness, nausea, mus-
cle cramps, feeling overly tired or sluggish,
feeling irritable, and feeling dizzy or light
headed. You could also experience de-
creased urine levels and/or urine that has a
strong odor or is darker than normal.
You may experience all, some or none
of these signs so the best way to avoid
dehydration is to monitor your water or
fluid intake, modify your physical activity,
or reduce the length of activity according
to weather conditions. Don't wait for the
symptoms of dry mouth, flushed skin,
headaches, lightheadedness or fatigue. You
should prevent dehydration by drinking
plenty of fluids throughout the day. Help

to avoid becoming dehydrated by staying
out of the direct sun, wearing light colored
and loose fitting clothing, limiting physical
activity, and using fans when possible.
If you suspect you are becoming dehy-
drated, get to a cool or shady area and sip
cool water or fluids. If your condition does
not improve, seek medical attention imme-
diately, Another heat-related illness is heat
exhaustion. Heat exhaustion can develop
after exposure to high temperatures and
inadequate or unbalanced replacement
of fluids Elderly, people with high blood
pressure or people who work or exercise
in a hot environment, are more prone to
heat exhaustion. The warning signs of heat
exhaustion vary, but may include heavy
sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, dilat-
ed pupils, tiredness, weakness, dizziness,
headache, nausea or vomiting, fainting,
skin that feels cool and moist, pulse rate
that is fast and weak and breathing that is
fast and shallow.
If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may
progress to heat stroke. Seek medical at-
tention immediately if your symptoms last
longer than one hour, if symptoms become
more severe, or if you have heart problems
or high blood pressure. Try to cool down
by drinking cool nonalcoholic beverages,
resting in an air-conditioned environment,
taking a cool shower, bath or sponge bath,
and wearing lightweight clothing.
You should also try to prevent sun burn,
which damages the skin's ability to dissi-
pate heat. You should wear a sunscreen of
at least 30 SPF. Be safe and be healthy!

There's a new pastor in town --

By Pastor Alan Koch
Faith Lutheran Church
"There's a new sheriff in town!" You
may have heard a phrase like that in the
latest Western movie you've seen, and it
could have meant that things were about to
change in that town, hopefully for the better.
Well, here's a similar phrase I'd like to use to
introduce myself. "There's a new preacher
in town!"
My name is Alan Koch. I'm the pastor of
the Faith Lutheran Church, on the corner of
Saginaw and Cedar, just one block west of
Ponce de Leon Avenue. I'm originally from
Auburn, Michigan, a small farming commu-
nity. So I feel right at home in Clewiston.
The crops might be different, but the type
of community is the same. Everyone knows
everyone else, and there is a real sense of
working together for the good of the com-
munity.
I became a pastor in 1994, after graduating
from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO.
Previous to that I served Lutheran churches
in Missouri, Illinois, New Jersey, and Florida
as a Minister of Music and middle school
teacher in their Lutheran schools.
My wife, Joan and I moved here last year
after being pastor of Sherman Oaks Luther-
an Church in the San Fernando Valley of Los
Angeles, California, a community much dif-
ferent than Clewiston.
In fact, our house was about a half mile
from the busiest intersection in Los Angeles,
where over two million cars passed every-
day!
I have had the delightful experience of
meeting some of you and your children as
I substitute taught and had lower grade cha-
pel at Clewiston Christian School the latter
part of last school year. I also met others of
you and your children at Faith's Vacation
Bible School in June.
I am learning a lot about Clewiston
through the speakers at the weekly Thursday

lunch meetings, at the Clewiston Inn, as a
member of the Lion's Club, a great organiza-
tion helping the children of our community
in need of help with their vision. As the new

Pastor Alan Koch

preacher in town, I also hope that things will
change for the better now that I am here. I
hope that's true, not because of me person-
ally, but because of the good news I bring
about Jesus Christ, the Savior and Lord of
the Universe.
It is a message that has consequences
for the lives of all of use now, but also for
eternity. I want everyone to know the joy of
having their sins forgiven, of knowing their
salvation is secure in Jesus, of being a child
of God and a brother to Jesus Himself, and
of having guidance to live out their lives in a
way pleasing to our heavenly Father.
I hope to get to know all of you soon.
And if I can ever be of help to anyone in this
community, whatever your church affiliation
or whatever the problem may be, I will be
more than happy to be there for you. Call
me at the church, 863-983-7302 or on my
cell, 863-843-5134.

Jose Zaragoza for The Clewiston News

By the time the in-
vestigations began that
night, they had been
broadcasting for 19 con-
goal of tinuous hours. Several
Paranor- rooms were setup with

ite to it. It Apparently, the kitch-
nedia ex- en is where most inves-
tigators and employees

have said that the great-
est amount of paranor-
mal activity occurs. Pots
have rattled during the
night and equipment
has been moved around,
some say.
A voice of a child ask-
ing for "Mommy," and
reports of feelings of be-
ing touched, as well an
apparent suicide of a
male guest who is said to
have hung himself from
the pipes in the kitchen
hallway many years ago
and the spirit of Ernest
McCray, the proud cook
who was strict with the
setup of his kitchen, are
some of the examples
of activity that have been
reported in the kitchen
over the years.
Armed with flash-
lights, electromagnetic
field detectors, voice re-
corders for catching elec-
tronic voice phenom-
enon and other tools of
the paranormal hunting
trade, the teams signed
up for time in the rooms
they wanted to investi-
gate.
During the course of
the investigations, several
teams reported sensing
the presence of a child
- two investigators re-
ported feeling a child's
hand gently clasping their
own -- or seeing the un-
explained movement of
shadows. However, other

teams neither experi-
enced nor recorded any
such phenomena.
This led to much
debate over the idea
whether the Clewiston
was haunted or not. The
investigations wrapped
up in the early hours of
Sunday morning and the
teams left to compile and
sift all the material that
they had gathered.
Throughout the course
of the evening, a com-
mon idea surfaced.
Those involved in this
event did not care if peo-
ple considered them to
be strange, weird or crazy
for believing in what they
do. Almost collectively,
their response seemed
to be, "I do what I do
because I love doing it.
What people think of me
does not change nor alter
the passion I have."
Their pursuit for the
truth is matched only by
their desire to help those
who do not understand
that there are things in
the world that are scien-
tifically unexplainable yet
understandable if they
have an open mind.
Ian Hickin summed up
his own pursuit: "I am not
going to stop doing what
I do until I am able to call
my dead grandmother on
the phone and ask her
where the keys are."

Fair Comes to Palm Terrace
Palm Terrace of Clewiston hosted a fair on Aug. 17, 2010. Residents were able to win prizes in the numerous games
and events. Hotdogs, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones were provided for residents and staff. A special thanks
to the contributions and donations we receive during the year that helps make these events possible. The residents
had a great time and enjoyed testing their skills at the games.

which showed that the horse had been dead
for some time," writes Detective Kenneth
Tillman.
Other officers reported finding yet anoth-
er dead horse that appeared to have been
dragged about a quarter-mile into a wooded
area on the property.
The next day they returned, to find even
more dead horses. One was still tied by rope
to a 1981 Ford pickup truck. Officers called
in an outside organization to respond to the
scene to remove the horses from the site
and blood was drawn from the horses to de-
termine their physical conditions. One was
put down due to the advanced stage of its
condition. The owners, Lonnie and Connie
Williams said they "were unable to take care
of their horses due to financial problems,"
based on the report.

As far as disposing of the horses, one of
the suspects said it was tribal custom "not to
bury or burn the carcass when a horse died,
but that they were merely left in the woods
to decompose."
He told officers he used a vehicle to pull
the dead horses into the woods. According
to Gary Bitner, who handles public relations
for the Seminole Tribe, the horses are being
cared for by a local veterinarian.
Information Mr. Bitner received signaled
that nine of the 10 horses that had been re-
covered and are being treated by the vet are
doing well. The last horse is "still touch and
go apparently," Mr. Bitner reported.
Despite the formal descriptions of the
animals and their locations when they were
found, a sliver of sentiment seems to course
through. Detective Tillman writes about
finding a horse in one of the stalls.
"This horse had died more recently as the
remains had not yet begun to decompose.
This horse was white with tan patches."

Edens graduates from basic training

Marine Corps Pfc. James D. Edens,
son of Tamela L. and Kenneth W. Edens
of Clewiston, Fla., recently completed 12
weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Re-
cruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C designed to
challenge new Marine recruits both physi-
cally and mentally.
Edens and fellow recruits began their
training at 5 a. m., by running three miles
and performing calisthenics. In addition to
the physical conditioning program, Edens
spent numerous hours in classroom and
field assignments which included learning
first aid, uniform regulations, combat wa-
ter survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand
combat and assorted weapons training.

They performed close order drill and op-
erated as a small infantry unit during field
training.
Edens and other recruits also received
instruction on the Marine Corps' core val-
ues--honor, courage and commitment, and
what the core values mean in guiding per-
sonal and professional conduct.
Edens and fellow recruits ended the
training phase with The Crucible, a 54-
hour, team evolution culminating in an
emotional ceremony in which recruits are
presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and
addressed as "Marines" for the first time in
their careers.
