Tornadoes, water spouts touch down

INI/Ashley Smith
Water spouts made their way to land last week just outside of Clewiston, causing some damage to homes.

By Ashley Smith and
Jose Jesus Zaragoza
The Clewiston News
No one paid too much attention to
how quickly the storm was approaching
Clewiston around 10 p.m. last Thursday. It
was relatively quiet; another rainy night.
That is until the water spouts started

forming at the southern point of Lake
Okeechobee, and made their way to, most
notably, the Ridgdill Subdivision just out-
side of Clewiston.
That's where the spouts, funnel forma-
tions over water, turned into full torna-
does, and wreaked some havoc on nearby
property owners. Though no one was re-
ported injured, residents worked until the

early hours of the morning cleaning up the
mess that the tornadoes caused.
One resident in Fox Brier said his car-
port ended up in another man's porch --
carports being the largest casualty, with at
least two more carports torn completely
away in this block.

Letters to the editor

To Whom It May Concern:
On the morning of March 13, 2010, my
husband suffered from a COPD exacerbation
at 4 a.m. I called the EMS, and the paramed-
ics arrived promptly. They were professional
and knowledgeable and gave him steroids
to open his airway.
He was admitted to the Emergency Room
under the care of Dr. Charles and Dr. Carlos
Sanchez. The staff from admitting, the respi-
ratory nurses and doctors were so wonder-
ful and let us know his outcomes as soon as
they were available. He was then admitted to
Room 48. He saw Dr. Kaki, who had wonder-
ful bedside manners, no rushing us through.
My husband has a long medical history, and
Dr. Kaki was patient and showed empathy.
All the staff on the unit nurses, dietary, re-
spiratory, maintenance and housekeepers
were so respectful of us. They couldn't do
enough to make our stay more comfortable
under the given circumstances.
On Monday, Dr. Charles came to the
room and explained to us, with compassion,
that my husband had an acute M.I. He went
over the laboratory results and explained to
us what he wanted them to be. Just like the
other doctors at Hendry Regional, he was

not in a hurry to get out of the room. They
sat down, talked to my husband, listened
and described choices we could make.
They, like everyone else, showed kindness
and concern. I would especially like to thank
Brad, a registered nurse, who provided me
with a cot so I was able to stay in the room
with my husband.
Finally we decided ,along with Dr.
Charles, to see a cardiologist at Cleveland
Clinic, due to the long drive we will endure
in April. Thank you to the medical records
department for having the medical records
copied and the narratives completed by the
next morning at 10 a.m., so we could have
them for Cleveland Clinic.
We come to Clewiston every year for
three months. Our experience with Hendry
Regional Medical Center has been wonder-
ful. I have been to many hospitals with my
husband. I am so glad to have you all here
for us during our visit every year. Thank you
all from the bottom of our hearts. May God
Bless you all you are true professionals.
Sincerely yours,
Al and Gerrie Morace
PS. Our student nurse, Carlos, was so ea-
ger to learn and display kindness and empa-

thy. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Good Morning:
On Saturday evening March 6, 2010, I
was injured in the Chalo Nitka Rodeo and
was transported to Hendry Regional Medi-
cal Center by Glades County EMS. From the
beginning, I was treated with the most cour-
teous and professional care. I have nothing
but praise for Dr. Maddalena, the gentleman
nurse named Andrew, and the young man
who wheeled me from the ER to X-ray. I
never once felt apprehensive: I realized that
everyone responsible for my care was very
well-trained and had a genuine concern for
my well-being. I want to thank all of you for
taking such good care of me!
My quote for today: "If you are going to
be stupid, you had better be tough, or be
close enough to the ER staff at Hendry Re-
gional Medical Center."
Sincerely,
Mickey A. Foster
P.S. Also a big KUDO to Manon Thivierge-
she checked my staples and sutures yester-
day- I am on the road to super-recovery!
Thank you to all of you!

Camp Buddies Needed
Each year we hold Camp Pioneer, a spe-
cial camp for the mentally challenged at the
Leesburg Life Enrichment Retreat Center.
We can only take campers if we have volun-
teer "Buddies" to share the camp week with
them. This year, we are in need of buddies,
especially female buddies, or some campers
will not be able to come. A buddy spends
the week with their campers, helping them
to have a special experience. The only cost
to the buddies is the cost of getting to the
camp. We have the program and activities
all planned out, and work in family groups,
so no one is alone and there is lots of group
support. We just need people to hang out
with these special campers as their "bud-
dies." This is one of the highlights of the year
for a number of these campers and their
families. The week of Camp Pioneer is July
12-17, and we ask Buddies to arrive the eve-
ning of July 11 for orientation. Call 863-983-
5269 for more information or to volunteer.

State of Florida soars in national

'Bicycle-Friendly' state rankings

State jumps 20 spots to
rank 12th in the nation
Florida jumped 20 places to rank 12th in
the nation among the most bicycle-friendly
states, according to the League of American
Bicyclists.
"Making Florida safer and more acces-
sible for bicyclists is a priority for the Flor-
ida Department of Transportation," said
Stephanie Kopelousos, Florida Department
of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary. "We're
encouraged by the progress we've made
and are committed to making the Sunshine
State a better place to ride your bike."
The Bicycle Friendly States program ranks
states based on a 95-item questionnaire that
evaluates a state's commitment to bicycling

and covers six key areas: legislation, policies
and programs, infrastructure, education and
encouragement, evaluation and planning,
and enforcement.
Florida ranked third in the nation in poli-
cies and programs and in the top 10 for in-
frastructure and evaluation. FDOT worked
carefully with other state agencies and bicy-
cling groups to compile the state's respons-
es. In fact, the department has formed the
Bicycle and Pedestrian Partnership Council
which meets for the first time in late June.
Working with multiple partners, the coun-
cil will make recommendations on design,
planning, safety and other programs involv-
ing bicycle and pedestrian issues throughout
the state.
FDOT's seven districts have pedestrian-
bicycle coordinators who consider the pe-

destrian and bicycle aspects of FDOT facili-
ties, projects and programs in their areas.

cycle Friendly State Rankings, please go to

more information about FDOT's bicycling
programs, please go to www.dot.state.fl.us

Gov. Crist announces free saltwater fishing weekends

Gov. Charlie Crist has announced two
free fishing weekends to help draw visitors
to the beautiful Sunshine State. Both resi-
dents and nonresidents in Florida can fish
for saltwater species around the state with-
out a license during the upcoming Memo-
rial Day weekend, May 29 to May 31, and the
weekend of June 5 and 6, which is the first
weekend after Florida's popular red snapper
season opens in the Gulf on June 1. All other
fishing rules apply.

"Florida is the fishing capital of the
world," Crist declared, "and our beaches are
clean, the fish are biting, and we invite our
friends to enjoy some Florida hospitality."
Chairman Rodney Barreto of the Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
(FWC) applauded the governor's decision.
"Gov. Crist's actions to offer free fishing
this weekend and next will do wonders for
our business communities that have been
suffering cancellations since the oil spill

started," Barreto said. "We aren't experi-
encing any oil impacts here, and the fact re-
mains that Florida is open for business."
The FWC will continue to monitor all
of the potential impacts of the oil spill on
Florida's fish and wildlife and continue to be
involved with many aspects of the oil spill
response, Barreto added. In addition, the
FWC has consulted with key representatives
from several fishing organizations in Florida
who are very concerned about inaccurate

public perceptions regarding the condition
of Florida's fisheries and the state's marine
environment. There has been strong agree-
ment from these stakeholders that the fish-
ing business in Florida is "as usual" and that
fishing remains a safe and viable recreation-
al and commercial activity.
Go to MyFWC.com/Fishing to learn about
fishing regulations in Florida.

Clewiston Cougars Football

& Cheer 2010 Season

CLEWISTON, Fla. (CSD) As a kid grow-
ing up in Clewiston in the 1970s, Keith White
experienced the same temptations that oth-
ers did. The street life with all of its self-
destructive habits lay waiting to snare him.
Fortunately, the Clewiston Cougars Football
volunteer coaches had something else to of-
fer him.
"The coaches who mentored me and
taught me about football and about life
when I was 10 and older kept me on track,"
said White, Vice President of the organiza-
tion for the past two years. "It worked for
me. They influenced me big time.
"Now, our involvement in the league as
coaches and administrators is our way of
giving back. We want to help make this
world a better place. We're Christian-based
and we focus on the positives. Kids are eas-
ily persuaded to do the wrong things, but
with our organization, we strive to do better
things in life."
Kids ages 5 through 15 are eligible to com-
pete in Clewiston Cougars Football, starting
with the Tiny Mites and continuing through
the Mitey Mites, Junior Pee Wees, Pee Wees,
Junior Midgets and Midgets. There are ap-
proximately 150 kids in the organization.
Each team plays eight games per season
-followed by playoffs -squaring off against
teams in towns including Naples, Fort My-
ers, Port Charlotte, Lake Placid and Sarasota.
Most teams play on regulation fields, with
younger kids utilizing smaller fields.
Registration sessions for the 2010 season
will occur the first Saturday of each month
at the Cougars practice field by the baseball

diamonds. The cost is $75 per player. The
first practice games will be held Aug. 1, with
regular-season games beginning later in the
month.
The Clewiston Cougars Football and
Cheer Board of Directors consists of Al Gary,
President; Keith White, Vice President; Ellen
Clemmons, Treasurer; Latonya Pass Moody,
Cheer Coordinator; LaTeesha Thomas, As-
sistant Secretary/Scholastics; April White,
Secretary; Will Demery, Athletic Director;
Johnny Jackson, Assistant Director; and
at-large board members Emmanuel Terry,
Mike Carmona and Juan Norton.

Police officers and Hendry County Sheriff's deputies scoured the crime scene for any evidence, towing the victim's ve-
hicle away to inspect it closer.

up from the floor and brought him inside the
store," said Mr. Garcia in Spanish. "The lady
here heard the shot, but when they came
out, he was on the floor."
The victim, Ramon Pena, a longtime em-
ployee of the La Frontera store, located at the
corner of Sugarland Highway and Francisco
Street, may not have even gotten a chance
to call for help before suffering a gunshot
wound to his neck/collar area.
"They thought he had money and they
assaulted him," said Mr. Garcia, adding that
the victim was returning from a trip to the
bank.
Mr. Garcia said the victim lives in Clewis-
ton, and has a wife and daughter. His condi-
tion at the time of this writing was uncertain,
though he was Traumahawked to a critical
care hospital after the shooting.
The Clewiston Police Department, mean-
while, is following up on leads, though it is
still too early in the investigation to release
much information about the case, and po-
lice are not saying if they have a suspect, or
suspects, in mind.
What they will say is that the crime is the
first of its kind: a late-morning shooting in
plain daylight.

Tornado

Continued From Page 1

Rocked by the sound of the wind against
her mobile home, one person called her
son, who rushed from Montura in time to
see the storm and the tornadoes pull up part
of the property from the ground.
Local bartenders at Roland Martin's Ma-
rina claimed to have spotted water spouts
coming in from Lake Okeechobee. The
winds reached across the dike before head-
ing in the direction of Clewiston.

The detail about the crime which was most disturbing is that it did not happen
in the dark, at night, but that it happened in plain daylight.

"It is very unusual for a Friday after-
noon," said Detective Julius "Hightower"
Taylor, who is involved in investigating the
crime. "We want to see if this was a set up
or something that these people have been
planning," he said, given that the suspects
in the case may have known the victim had
gone to the bank, and knew enough to tar-
get him when he returned.

The reports were relayed to the National
Weather Service's Forecast office in Miami.
Dan Dixon, a forecaster there, said the re-
ports indicated a series of four water spouts
in the area of Clewiston that Thursday. The
reports were called in either by the county's
emergency management office, or through
the Skywarn Network, a group of people
certified to watch storms and call in reports,
Mr. Dixon said.
Mr. Dixon said the tornadoes and water
spouts were most likely triggered by the
storm itself.
"You first of all have to have some type
of shower or thunderstorm in place over the

"No amount of information is too small,"
Detective Taylor insisted. He encouraged
anyone with information on the crime to
contact the police department.
If you know the identity of the shooter,
or have information pertaining to the case,
you are asked to contact the Clewiston Po-
lice Department at 863-983-1474. You may

water," he said.
Amanda Lewis and her boyfriend, Dustin
Lowman, were packing for a weekend trip
to the beach when they stopped to spy a
water spout on the lake. A friend of theirs
who followed the spout from Lake Harbor
to right before it reached the Roland Martin's
Marina had called them.
"Another about touched the ground then
the 'dry heat' came. The wind stopped and
it got hot," remembered Amanda.
"All of the sudden it sounded like a freight
train coming with the gust of wind," she said.
"It was like straight out of a horror movie."
