Corps discusses Lake Okeechobee Gear Up
Senior official's regretfully. m makes
declaration Fla. makes

By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
The Clewiston News
"When it comes to it, at the end of the
day, I'm the guy that's responsible and
accountable for what's happening to the
lake, period. If you need to put a face to it,
this is the ugly mug right here. It's me."
Inside of the Clewiston City Hall cham-
bers, Colonel Alfred Pantano, a top offi-
cial at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
stood and spoke like a man with a large
weight on his back like someone who
had done something wrong and regretted
it.
"It makes me sick. It makes me sick
to know what we're going," he said. "I'm
here to face you all, and confront it, and
be honest with it."
More so than most government offi-
cials, Colonel Pantano, walking into Mon-
day night's Clewiston city meeting in full
military garb, thin black-rimmed glasses
and a shaved head, spoke without reser-
vation.
He is at the top of a long chain of su-
pervisors, managers, representatives, en-
gineers, contractors and sub-contractors
who are focused on ensuring the safety
of residents living, and property located,
near Lake Okeechobee, the largest inland
lake in the state.
The occasion for his visit, and that of
other senior officials who also find them-
selves working week in and week out on
the restoration of the 143-mile dike, they
lined the east wall of the chamber almost
completely on Monday, was a message
that the lake is far too high now fully
two feet higher than a regulation sched-
ule would have it, and four feet higher
than last year's dry season and that re-
leases to the Caloosahatchee and St. Lu-
cie canals are necessary.
"We're in May and we haven't even hit
the wet season yet," he warned.
The concept is a simple one: When
lake levels rise, so do the chances that
a failure or a breach can occur at some
point along the levee system. The fear is,
should such a breach occur, and water
levels be sufficiently high when it would,
many lives, especially those of residents
living in the south and southeast sections
of the lake would be in danger.
The simple answer to minimize this

A constant shower on Monday brought colorful horizons, as well as addition-
al water to Lake Okeechobee, which today stands at about 14.64 feet. Corps
officials say stormy events and hurricanes must be managed very carefully
to avoid the risk of a breach at the levee surrounding the lake.

possibility is to drain water from the lake.
This becomes a complicated proposition,
especially for Colonel Pantano, because
what occurs when he does this is that es-
tuaries being fed the water, at capacities

of up to 4,000 cubic feet per second, are
harmed.

It may have been just a few citizens of
Clewiston and Hendry County that took notice
of the convoy of bicyclists in red, white and
blue spandex that passed through on Sunday
evening and early Monday morning, but this
group of college men left a large impact dur-
ing their visit.
The nearly 40 young men of Pi Kappa Phi
fraternity's Gear Up Florida bicycle tour across
Florida made an overnight visit in Clewiston.
The fraternity has done so for the past 15 years.
The group arrived on Sunday afternoon around
3 p.m. to Clewiston High School's gymnasium
for overnight lodging and then followed up
with a friendship visit and dinner at Sunrise
Community Center. They had cycled 95 miles
from Miami.
On Monday morning the team arose at 5:30
a.m. and had an early breakfast hosted by First
United Methodist Church before cycling across
the county to Ft. Myers for day 5 of their 2-week
cycling event, which will take them to a final
destination of Tallahassee on May 29th.
Each year the group cycles an 800-mile trek
across Florida creating awareness for those
people with disabilities and also offering dona-
tions to organizations that provide help for dis-
abled peoples. This year the group presented a
check for $750 to the Sunrise Community for a
grant for its Community Awareness Program.
Gear Up Florida's team raises over $80,000
to benefit people with disabilities which they
present to organizations during their ride
across Florida.
"Gear Up Florida was created with one
mission in mind," said the Pi Kappa Phi Push
America website, "To reach out to as many
people across the State of Florida, spreading a
message of acceptance and understanding on
behalf of people with disabilities."
The fraternity has a similar event that cov-

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,
This past week, May 2 to May 8, was
National Pet Week. Various organizations
such as the American Veterinary Medical
Association Auxilliary and pet related lo-
cal enterprises have called attention to pets
and the importance of the human-animal
bond. I am writing to remind everyone that
humane societies and shelters such as the
Caloosa Humane Society in LaBelle are
working tirelessly 24/7/365 with ever dwin-
dling resources to provide care for homeless
and abandoned pets that would otherwise
have nowhere to go and no one to advocate
for them. I'm sure by now everyone knows
there is a pet population problem. Supply
has far outpaced demand. According to the
National Council on Pet Population Study
and Policy and the Humane Society of the
United States:
Seven puppies and kittens are born for
every human birth in this country day after

day.
Four million dogs and cats are put
down each year when shelters run out of
space. That's one death every 8 seconds.
55 percent of dogs and puppies and
71 percent of cats and kittens that enter
shelters are ultimately put to death. Some
abandoned pets have a better chance than
others. The young and the small have an
edge. Dogs that are large, black and perhaps
of the "bully breed" persuasion have almost
no chance of leaving the shelter through the
front door. Cats and dogs abandoned on the
street are doomed but for the remote kind-
ness of strangers.
And so, we do have an animal prob-
lem, but we also have an equally serious
human problem. We live in a society where
acquisition many times swings on a whim.
The novelty of something newly acquired
can just as quickly fade and we now look
to dispose of the very thing we just "had to

have". Every day companion pets are sur-
rendered to shelters because they are "too
big," or they no longer "fit a lifestyle" or
maybe they develop bad or destructive hab-
its all because no one took the time to train
or exercise them properly.
The Caloosa Humane Society and those
it cares for can use your help. They are in
need of things like paper towels, Dawn dish-
washing detergent, cat litter,laundry soap
and of course dog & cat food. Call Suzanne
and check on the current need before you
go shopping next time. As they are a not for
profit organization, cash contributions are
tax deductible. Volunteers are always need-
ed and much appreciated. You'll enjoy it!
And if you are someone who can handle
long term commitment, stop in and take a
tour. You never know. Your new best friend
may be waiting.
Sincerely,
Bruce G. Steinfeldt, D.V.M.

Sunset Storytime to meet

Sunset Storytime, will meet again at the
Clewiston library on Monday, May 24, at
6:30 p.m. The program features local teens,
under adult supervision, reading stories to
local children. The program is absolutely
free, no cost at all. For more information,
please contact the Clewiston Library at 863-
983-1493.

Camp Buddies Needed
Each year we hold Camp Pioneer, a spe-
cial camp for the mentally challenged at the
Leesburg Life Enrichment Retreat Center.
We can only take campers if we have volun-
teer "Buddies" to share the camp week with
them. This year, we are in need of buddies,
especially female buddies, or some campers
will not be able to come. A buddy spends
the week with their campers, helping them
to have a special experience. The only cost
to the buddies is the cost of getting to the
camp. We have the program and activities
all planned out, and work in family groups,
so no one is alone and there is lots of group
support. We just need people to hang out
with these special campers as their "bud-
dies." This is one of the highlights of the year
for a number of these campers and their
families. The week of Camp Pioneer is July
12-17, and we ask Buddies to arrive the eve-

ning of July 11 for orientation. Call 863-983-
5269 for more information or to volunteer.

Summer Camp registration
City of Clewiston Recreation Department
will be accepting registrations for Summer
Camp now util June 4. The Summer Camp is
for ages 5 to 12 years old. You can register at
the Youth Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Space
is limited. If you have any questions, please
call Lance or Joanna at 863-983-1492.

CenturyLink offers telephone assistance to
individuals living on Tribal Lands
CenturyLink is energizing its efforts to inform residents of two assistance programs that provide
discounts on initial telephone installation and basic monthly telephone service to qualifying low-
income consumers. Link-Up helps these consumers pay the initial costs of getting telephone
service. Lifeline provides certain discounts on monthly service for qualified subscribers.
Lifeline and Link-Up are available to qualifying consumers in every U.S. state (territory and
commonwealth). Qualifications for participation vary by state. States with their own programs
have their own criteria. In states that rely solely on the federal program, the subscriber must par-
ticipate in one of the following programs: Medicaid, food stamps, Supplemental Security
Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance or the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
Program (LIHEAP), Head Start, the National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program,
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or if the Household annual gross income is at
or below 135% of the federal poverty level.
The amount of the discounts also varies by state. Link-Up helps qualified low-income con-
sumers to connect to the telephone network. This federal program offsets 1/2 of the initial hook-
up fee, up to $30, for qualified households.
Residents of American Indian and Alaskan Native tribal lands may qualify for an additional $25
of enhanced Lifeline support monthly and up to $70 of expanded Link-Up support beyond cur-
rent levels. An individual living on tribal lands may also qualify for Lifeline and Link-Up dis-
counts if he or she participates in one of the above programs or one of the following federal pro-
grams: Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance or Tribally-Administered Temporary
Assistance to Needy Families.
Individuals living in a CenturyLink service area should call 800-201-4099 or
visit www.centurylink.com/lifeline to inquire about eligibility.

Tobacco Free Florida recognizes 'No Tobacco Day'

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated
around the world every year on May 31 to
inform the public on the dangers of using
tobacco, the marketing practices of tobacco
companies, and steps that the World Health
Organization is taking to combat the tobac-
co epidemic.
For decades, tobacco companies have
glamorized their products to attract women
through placement in motion pictures, mu-

sic tours and catchy advertisements in wom-
en's magazines. Even the product packaging
has been altered to appeal to women by cre-
ating slimmer and designer-inspired cases.
The Students Working Against Tobacco
(SWAT) Chapters from local schools will
conduct World No Tobacco Day events
throughout the Memorial Day weekend. As
a local theme for this year, the SWAT youth
and the County Tobacco-Free Partnership

will use "Enjoying a Tobacco-Free Holiday".
The SWAT youth and Partnership members
will be encouraging residents to participate
in Memorial Day events that are Tobacco-
Free. Throughout the Memorial Day week-
end you will find SWAT youth and Tobacco-
Free Partnership members conducting street
marketing events, gathering vital informa-
tion about tobacco-free policy from citizens
and encouraging tobacco users to utilize the

local Tobacco Cessation services.
Tobacco Free Florida is a statewide effort
to educate the public about the dangers of
all tobacco use and to help those who use
tobacco to "Be Free" and break the cycle of
addiction. The campaign has reached mil-
lions of Floridians through its advertising,
online social media, grassroots initiatives,
educational outreach and public relations
efforts.

Register for storm shelter

Family members with
special needs are
encouraged to register early
In the event of a hurricane or other ca-
tastrophe, the Hendry County Emergency
Management departments will attempt to
provide special sheltering and transportation
for those who have chronic medical condi-
tions requiring special needs.
Special needs shelters are truly identified
as facilities of last refuge for those persons
in the community with health and medical
conditions.
The Hendry County Special Needs Shel-
ter (West Glades Schools) is defined as a
structure that has auxiliary power and is
capable of providing a safer refuge for in-
dividuals, and their caregivers, who require
health oversight.
Considering that the county's medical re-
sources are limited, it is strongly suggested
that you pursue primary evacuation plans
with family, friends, neighbors, church orga-
nizations, etc.
Speak with your physician and fam-
ily about your transportation and sheltering
needs.
Have your physician execute the neces-
sary pre-admission procedures well in ad-
vance of a known, pending disaster such as
a hurricane.
Again, talk to your family, friends, and

neighbors about providing you with evacu-
ation transportation.
If you live in a mobile home park or an
area with an established homeowners as-
sociation, inquire about your association's
disaster plan.
Also, if you have special needs that do not
require medical sheltering, speak with your
minister, or affiliate religious association, or
civic organization to see what types of evac-
uation sponsorship programs are available.
Please keep in mind that pets are not al-
lowed in the shelter, so make arrangements
for their well being in advance.
Should you need to attend the West
Glades Schools PSN Shelter, you are required
to register prior to shelter entry, and you are
required to bring a caregiver with you into
the shelter.
Registration forms for Hendry County
residents can be obtained from the Hendry
County Health Department and the Hendry
County Emergency Management Office.
Once your registration is received and
reviewed, you will receive notification as to
whether you qualify for the Special Needs
Shelter.
Should it be determined that your needs
do not warrant a Special Needs Shelter, you
will be notified of other shelters available in
your area in which you can seek refuge.
For more information, or if you would like
to have a registration form mailed to you,
please contact the Hendry County Emergen-
cy Management office at 863-674-5400.

No fire, no power, no rescue?
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
On April 14, 1912, signals of distress
pierced the dark night of the North Atlantic
in all directions from the ill-fated ship, Ti-
tanic.
The S.S. Californian, the nearest ship
to the scene of the accident, could have
reached the Titanic before it sank. But the
Californian never reached the place where
the Titanic sank.
At the investigation of the sinking of the
Titanic, Senator William Smith of Michigan
asked the commanding office why the Cali-
fornian didn't sail immediately to the scene
of the accident when the wireless reached
her.
The officer shifted uncomfortably, then
explained that they had feared icebergs,
so they were lying motionless in the water.
Even more importantly, he explained, they
had extinguished their fires and had no
steam up.
Such was the explanation given as to why
the Californian, which could have reached
the Titanic before it sank, never got there
and never rescued a single soul. No fire, no
power, no one rescued!
Could that be said about us that we have
the form of religion, but not its power? "But
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth." (Actsl:8)
Sunday is Pentecost, the celebration of
the gift of God's outpouring of the Spirit to
the church and to us. Is this a gift we have
received? Are we filled with the Spirit?
The word "filled" was a word used of
the wind filling up a sail and carrying a ship
along in the water. To be filled with the spirit
is to allow the ship of your life to be guided
by the wind of the Holy spirit of God.
When we are filled with the Holy spirit,
we set the sail of our heart toward God and
let the wind of God, which is the Holy Spirit,
take our ship wherever He wants it to go.
This is how we get the fire and power in
our lives that God promises us -the fire and

power to fulfill our calling as witnesses and
rescue the perishing.
Those gathered at Pentecost experienced
the power of God's spirit in their midst. Might
I suggest that we wait like those faithful Jews
in Jerusalem and that we gather expecting
the Spirit to come to us? Might I suggest that
we daily invite the Spirit of God to help us
embody the Fruits of the Spirit (love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith-
fulness, gentleness, self-control)?
The Spirit comes if we invite Him. If we
want to be Spirit filled, we must learn to pray
and we must learn to gather expectantly and
we must learn to invite.

Someone left you a fortune!
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
Yes, it's true! There was One who died
for your sake that you might inherit all the
riches of heaven for eternity. Galatians 1:4
says "Who gave Himself for our sins that
he might deliver us out of this present evil
world." I Peter 1:3-4 says "who according to
His great mercy begat us again unto a liv-
ing hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead, unto an inheritance incor-
ruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not
away, reserved in heaven for you."
The death of Jesus Christ, almost 2,000
years ago, gives you today the right of inheri-
tance, provided you fulfill the terms of the
will He left. This Fortune is free, and freely
given. Romans 8:32 says "He that spared not
his own Son but delivered Him up for us all,
how shall He not also with Him freely give
us all things."
Because of God's grace and God's love
this Fortune is freely given but you must
meet the terms of His will. The terms are:
1.Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts
16:31). 2.Repentance from all your sins
(Acts 17:30). 3.Confess Jesus Christ as your
Savior (Acts 8:37). 4.Baptism by immersion
in water, into Christ for the remission of
your sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts
2:38; 8:35-39 & Romans 6:3-4). 5.Continuing
steadfastly to live for Christ (Acts 2:42).
If you fail to accept this gift of eternal life

you have no one to blame but yourself for
"God is not willing that any should perish
but that all should come to repentance." If
you fail to accept God's Gift you must pay
the penalty of your own sin which is eternity
in hell with the devil and his angels.
This coming Sunday is one of the great
days on the Christian calendar. It is the Day
of Pentecost, the birthday of the church!
Read Acts 2 about the events of this day. It
was a day that the Gospel was first preached
as a fact, when people where first told what
to do to be saved, when the Great Commis-
sion began to be carried out, plus many
other firsts! Remember when Christ returns,
He is coming back for His Church (I Thes-
salonians 4:13-18.)

To Graduates: A wish for
"The road to Damascus"
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
We don't hear much in the scriptures
about "going to school" but it is evident that
lots of learning took place in Biblical times.
Ways of preparing for life's call were differ-
ent in those times, but everyone had to do
some learning in order to live and take their
place in the world.
Disciples and apostles had to learn their
trades and crafts, the Lord appeared in the
temple "sitting among the teachers, listening
to them and asking them questions (Luke
2:49)."
They were amazed at His understanding
-he was a good student! Tradition would
have had Jesus go through the formal cere-
mony of reading the Law and being counted
as an adult member of the religious body
"...with full rights and privileges thereunto
appertaining."
Religions still hold to similar traditions;
for some it is "confirmation," for others
a time of baptism, for others some rite of
initiation, for all it is a recognition of a rite
of passage from "discipleship" to going out
and taking a new place in the world. Our
graduates are now sharing in that rite of

passage as society has mandated. They will
no doubt find out many new and exciting
things about the world they are about to en-
ter; challenges, frustrations, opportunities,
disappointments, going to new places and
learning new things.
While teaching, one student told me that
he was now considering a career in one of
my subject areas -psychology. Apparently,
the course I gave opened doors and showed
him a new way of looking at life, of serving
others, of growing, a discipline he had only
heard of in the past but now is a potential for
fulfillment and career.
He had a "Road to Damascus" experi-
ence; with all of the reorientation and won-
derful possibilities in new ways not consid-
ered before. Saint Paul reoriented his life
after finding his true vocation; nothing at all
like his formation as a Pharisee; but more
wonderful and fulfilling, useful to God and
useful to all he met.
My wish is that you may have your "Road
to Damascus" experience; building on the
foundations you've been given and that are
represented in your graduation, but also
having new and exciting experiences to ex-
pand, grow, fulfill, and most of all -to see
God's hand at work in it all. In my own life, I
envisioned being an engineer when I gradu-
ated from high school.
Perhaps God saw my place in a form of
"human engineering" and combined it with
curiosity -always asking questions. My ex-
perience is that "if you ask questions, you'll
wind up getting back to God." Looking at
God's creation and God's people will lead to
seeing His image -and finding His hand at
work in our lives and the lives of others.
Graduates, may you never cease to ask
questions, search, seek, explore, and grow
on the foundations now laid down in your
lives. You will find God in one form or an-
other as you do! Amen.

Students from the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Club were treated to a
visit from K.C. and her puppy, Elmer, during their recent club meeting. K.C.
and Elmer came as representatives of the Clewiston Animal Control. Their
purpose was to share about the responsibilities of the animal control depart-
ment and to say thanks for the $100 donation that the RAK Club had made
to the department after selling pet treats at the last Clewiston City Market.
Students enjoyed asking questions of K.C. and getting to pet Elmer. Elmer
was more than happy to share "kisses" of appreciation with them.

Corps
Continued From Page 1

this very unnatural event compromises the
animals living in those estuaries, and threat-
ens to undo the very work the colonel's
team is tasked with carrying out.
"Our focus as a district, more so than any
district in the corps, is ecosystem restora-
tion," he said. "I want you to know up front,
it pains us, it really does, it pains us to put
this water into those estuaries. It's absolute-
ly damaging and destroying the estuaries.
That's a fact."
But the fact is that the lives of people out-
weigh the lives of those animals, he seemed
to say. The chorus of criticism from people
living on either coast in vehement opposi-

tion of the releases into their waterways is
an unfortunate circumstance.
"As much as I love the environment, and
as much as I care about the ecosystem ... I
can't do anything to jeopardize human life,"
he said. "That's not gonna happen. You have
my commitment that that's not gonna hap-
pen."
Though never mentioning the state's plan
to acquire U.S. Sugar lands directly, the colo-
nel said the alternative of directing the water
south isn't feasible yet, though he hopes that
it will be.
So now, all he can do is engage in pre-
dictive analysis to determine just how much
water must be released -- the corps only has
the ability to release water six times slower
than rainy or stormy events are able to pour
it into the lake so pre-planning is essential.
According to him, heavy rain events, a

storm or a hurricane, has the potential of in-
troducing up to four full feet of water to the
lake, an "adrenaline" rush of liquid.
The analysis also considers the require-
ment of the lake's own ecosystem and why
the corps could never keep the lake level at
a very low measure, either.
"If we get it right, we're a hero because
it retains the water you want and it protects
the people," he said. "If we get it wrong,
then we got people's lives and property at
stake. You have a plan to get it right, but you
might not get it right."
While here, the colonel discussed the
work around the dike as coming along
steadily. The area which is now being
worked on is called Reach 1, which focuses
on the Pahokee/Belle Glade/South Bay area.
It has been identified as having the highest
chances of failure.

The first measure, although the colonel
stressed that this was simply one measure
among several, includes installing a cutoff
wall into the dike 70 to 80 feet deep to "re-
duce the permiability of the structure."
This has been worked on for the last few
years and work around the entire dike is not
expected to be finished until past 2020.
He is cognizant of the power of the lake.
"I refer to it as the sleeping giant," he
said. "I remember the first time I went out
on Lake Okeechobee. It was a beautiful sun-
ny day when we arrived. Before I knew it, I
closed my eyes and opened them again and
the rain was coming in horizontal, the winds
peaked back up to 50, 60 miles an hour. I
looked out at the horizon at the water and
I saw the whitecaps and I thought for a sec-
ond, 'this is the inland Atlantic I'm looking
at here.'"

ers the U.S. with nearly 66 cyclists which is
called the Journey of Hope in which they
push the same message while they cycle
from San Francisco, CA to Washington, D.C.
"The most amazing thing about this
group is they are the leaders of tomorrow,"
said Helen McVitty, Sunrise Community
Clewiston Operations director. "They are
making a difference in the lives of people
with disabilities and it is a stepping stone
to changing some of the attitudes of the fu-
ture."
McVitty said Sunrise Community has
hosted Gear Up Florida's team for the past
8 years.
"It is a pleasure to see so many young
people with an interest in people with dis-
abilities," she said. "The visit allows our peo-
ple to be a part of a celebration with people
without disabilities."
Gear Up Florida's team members come
from college campuses from all over the
United States. Each must raise $3,000 to par-
ticipate in the event.
"We build relationships with brothers all
across the country and change lives during
the rides," said Adam Van Treese, graduate
of Miami University in Ohio.
Gear Up Florida is his third cycle event
with Pi Kappa Phi's Push America organiza-
tion. He also did the Journey of Hope and
Build America.
"The ride has significant challenges and
many humbling moments," he said of the
ride and visits with people with disabilities.

"Everyone (on the team) will get their Push
America moment that changes their life for-
ever."
Van Treese said he has had many of those
moments and still talks to some of the peo-
ple he has met on his Push America rides.
"We had a good visit with the people
of Sunrise," said Van Treese. "Cindy (from
Sunrise Community) and I had a really good
visit because she told me all about wrestling,
which is her favorite."
"We try to teach people to not label oth-
ers," he said "See past disabilities into the
abilities of all people. It's people first ... that's
our mission."
McVitty said the Gear Up Florida team's
donation means much to the Sunrise Com-
munity as changes in the economy have
provided challenges in funding. The group
has seen funding reductions cuts already
and expect to see more in July.
"We will have to go out and actively fund-
raise this year," said McVitty. "We have many
that help like the Gear Up Florida team and
others but it will take more because of the
reductions."
Donations to the Sunrise Community of
Southwest Florida can be sent to P.O. Box
185, Clewiston FL 33440 or call 863-902-
1133 and speak to Helen McVitty or Debbie
Grant. To help sponsor a Gear Up Florida
team member or for more information on
the organization and the team's journey, go

"We are thankful for all the help commu-
nities and individuals give to us," said Gear
Up Florida crew leader Garrett Ostedgaard,
Colorado State University. "We appreciate
their support in helping us touch the lives of
others."
