The Egg-Stravaganza event held on Sunday, April 4 was a huge success. Iglesia Vida Nueva wants to thank the community members who helped, with a
special thanks to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Many other community members supported the event. We look forward to more events and the support of the
community in the future. More than 1,000 people were there, children ages 1 to 11 enjoyed time at games and the massive egg hunts taking place.

Water

PD: Suspect crashed
into utility pole
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
The Clewiston
A suspect arrested on charges
of aggravated assault with a deadly
weapon pointed a gun and fired
several shots at a residence on E. El
Paso Avenue.
At least, that's what the caller
said. In reality, the man brandished
a water hose handle, and there is no
law in the books -- at the moment
-- to convict him on charges of drive-
by squirting.
The incident happened on Satur-
day, April 3. Clewiston Police Officer
J. Pilon responded to the "shots
fired" call and when he arrived spot-
ted a gold Lincoln Town Car which
had just crashed into a nearby utility
pole. The pole had broken in half
and lay against the vehicle with only

Is Sugar purchase dead?

In wake of judge's
decision, Sugar,
district prepared for
supreme court ruling
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
The Clewiston News
A Miami federal judge's self-
labeled impatience with the pace
of restoration projects in the
Everglades Agriculture Area may
be one indication that the state's
proposed purchase of U.S. Sugar --
a project now well into its second
year of negotiations and deadline
extensions -- has reached its apex.
The judge last Thursday
ordered the district to redirect its
efforts on a $700 million to $800
million reservoir project in West-
ern Palm Beach County -- which
seems to thrust another wrench in
the South Florida Water Manage-
ment District's plans to purchase
U.S. Sugar's lands.
The district finds itself address-
ing just how it expects to pay
for the $536 million purchase of
an initial 73,000 acres of land,
while still-hurting property values
continue putting a dent in its tax-

supported budget.
Recent reports have focused
on the district's having to delay,
suspend or altogether scrap cer-
tain projects, possibly even selling
some of its land, to help pay for
the purchase.
The Miami judge's ruling is
now another powerful consider-
ation. Is the Sugar deal dead? By
the time this newspaper is printed,
the public may know.
Strong opposition from Florida
Crystals and the Miccosukee Tribe
has seen U.S. Sugar and the district
defending, or having to answer
tough questions about whether or
not the purchase is needed at all.
Lawyers for both the tribe and
Florida Crystals prepared to ask
the Florida Supreme Court not
to validate the bonds the district
needed to move forward with the
purchase this past Wednesday;
arguing, among other things,
whether there is a public need as-
sociated with the purchase of the
huge swath of land.
On one side, representatives
for the two organizations vilify the
governor for his political aspira-
tions, and U.S. Sugar, for crafting a

State land acquisition is a
rare opportunity rather than
a bail-out
Most criticism aimed at the State's acqui-
sition of U.S. Sugar lands for restoration is
fueled by our largest business competitor
Florida Crystals and a few politicians highly
motivated by their campaign contributions.
They have characterized this acquisition as
a bail-out of a struggling company. That is
a lie.
U.S. Sugar never solicited this proposal.
We were not for sale. Then Governor Crist
approached us with the proposal to acquire
all of U.S. Sugar and its 180,000 acres of stra-
tegically located land for Everglades restora-
tion.
The only reason we entertained Gov.
Crist's proposal was that it came from the
Governor and our owners believed the trans-
action would play a major part in resolving
the huge problems of the Everglades, Lake
Okeechobee, and the Caloosahatchee and
St. Lucie rivers, a fitting legacy for our land.
While it was true that our sugar busi-
ness had at that time accumulated signifi-
cant debt due to several hurricanes and the
monumental, multi-year construction of our
state-of-the-art sugar factory-- that is not the
whole story.
Our Company has been in business since
1931, and we have always weathered the
storms. So, we made hard decisions, priori-
tized spending and cut costs. In its third year
of operations, our new sugar factory is run-
ning smoothly and our refinery has had re-
cord production. Presently, we have the best
sugar market in 30 years and we have sold
our sugar well into the future at high prices.
Today, U.S. Sugar is well capitalized and
we have retired more than $200 million of
debt. Our owners, shareholders, and bank-
ers are very pleased and proud of what we
have accomplished:
We never violated any of our banking

and loan covenants
Due to our new sugar factory, railroad
and cost-reductions, we are by far the low-
est-cost producer of refined cane sugar in
the United States
We expect strong sugar demand, sales
and pricing for at least 2010 and 2011
We are the lowest-cost producer of
Florida NFC orange juice
We developed and own the only
disease-resistant citrus trees in the United
States
Florida Crystals is spending tens of mil-
lions of dollars in court, in the Legislature
and in the media opposing this transaction
in an attempt to get some of U.S. Sugar's su-
perior assets for their business. Their actions
are certainly in keeping with their history of
trying to force a better deal for themselves.
Just as they did when they sued the State for
its purchase of Talisman Sugar in the south-
ern Everglades Agricultural Area for restora-
tion a decade ago, Florida Crystals is angling
for their own "sweet deal" in this case.
When Gov. Crist first announced this his-
toric acquisition, Florida Crystals' spokes-
man Gaston Cantens was quoted in the
Miami Herald, stating they "view this as an
opportunity to resolve some of these linger-
ing environmental issues and create some
long-term stability in this area." In fact, Flor-
ida Crystals secretly sent their own proposal
to the South Florida Water Management Dis-
trict-"to acquire a portion of the U.S. Sugar
assets" and "join in pursuit of the State's
goals." They demanded their offer be kept
confidential, and when their greedy terms
were refused, they filed lawsuits opposing
this acquisition.
Examples of greed and hypocrisy from
our critics:
While calling the contract "too sweet"
for U.S. Sugar, Florida Crystals was attempt-
ing to force an even "sweeter" deal for
themselves
At the same Governing Board meet-
ing that Florida Crystals' spokesman Gaston
Cantens publicly complained U.S. Sugar's

$150 per acre lease rate, Florida Crystal's
leases with the SFWMD were approved at
$59 per acre.
Cantens uses the EAA-A1 reservoir on
Talisman land to claim U.S. Sugar's deal
delays other restoration projects when his
own company sued the SFWMD to stop that
reservoir construction. They forced a settle-
ment, got an $8 million payout and still farm
over 20,000 acres of state-owned Talisman
to this day.
Florida Crystals' secret proposal to the
SFWMD offered a "sweetheart deal" to relin-
quish their Talisman leases only in exchange
for US Sugar land that is 50% more produc-
tive than their own.
Florida Crystals ran commercials
claiming restoration dollars are better spent
north of Lake Okeechobee at the same time
they've presented an alternative plan that
has the SFWMD buying some of their land
south of the lake rather than U.S. Sugar's.
At the SFWMD's request, due to the eco-
nomic downturn, we have twice re-negoti-
ated this contract so that it was affordable to
the State while still providing a fair return to
our shareholders. A broad public review and
extensive Court process approved its public
purpose, all over Florida Crystal's objections.
We are confident the Florida Supreme Court
will uphold the bond validation and that the
Governing Board will complete its budget
process, making this a high priority without
raising taxes.
The bottom line: Florida has a very rare
opportunity to re-acquire a large swath of the
historic Everglades from a willing seller at a
fair, appraised price that will advance Gov.
Crist's bold Everglades restoration plan. Flor-
ida's political leaders and its citizens should
not be fooled by a slick public relations cam-
paign from self-serving Palm Beach billion-
aires with a long history of throwing people
out of the lifeboat, not just to get a seat, but
so that they can get a better seat.

Center brings 'hope close to home'

Hope HealthCare Services has succeeded
in "bringing Hope close to home" for thou-
sands of residents of eastern Lee, Glades
and Hendry counties. Construction is now
complete on the Hope HealthCare Services
Center in Lehigh Acres, the only health care
center of its kind in the state of Florida.
More than 600 people attended a two-day
open house event at the Center, on March 30
and 31.
"The opening of the Center represents a
major landmark for Hope in enhancing the
care we offer to so many people in need," ac-
cording to Hope President and CEO Samira
K. Beckwith. "This is a gift of time for every-
one in the area no more long hours driving
to other hospice houses and care facilities
for services or to visit loved ones."
Set to open in mid-April, the Center will
serve eastern Lee County, including Buck-
ingham, Alva, Gateway, Lehigh Acres and
Pelican Preserve, as well as Hendry and
Glades counties.
The 45,000 square-foot Center includes:
24 individual care suites for hospice
patients
Respite areas for loved ones of the pa-
tients
An Adult Day Health Center, offering
Hope Select Care, a Program of All-inclusive
Care for the Elderly (PACE), where approxi-
mately 50 frail and elderly clients will receive
care and support each day
A Community Education Center which
will offer, among other programs, education
for family caregivers
Bereavement counseling offices
Offices for home care teams and vol-
unteers, who serve hundreds of people
throughout the area

Starfish Christians
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
When the earliest fishermen found a thriving
population of starfish munching big holes in the
mussel, clam, and oyster beds they were 11 1 ,._
they simply hacked up the greedy little starfish into
bits and tossed them back into the sea.
Big mistake. Before they new it, these early fish-
ermen were up to their hips in the slow moving
little suckers. One of the first lessons learned in early
aquaculture was "Don't cut up the starfish!"
Whack one starfish in two and what do you get?
Two starfish! Hack one starfish into five chunks and
you get five starfish. All a starfish needs to regenerate
a whole new creature is one arm and a smidgen of
the central disk of its body. A starfish can "re-mem-
ber" itself. It can form a completely new, whole star-
fish out of a small start.
Resurrection Christians are like starfish. It's after
Easter, but as long as we take with us the defining
miracle of an empty tomb, we can "re-member" the
body of Christ anywhere, anytime, in every age, no
matter how dismembered they may become. The
new incarnations of Christ's body might not have
perfect symmetry. They might need to work on co-
..,,iihi ih._. all of their new parts. But as long as the
"re-membering" of the dismembered continues, the
body will keep growing.
Jesus' resurrection triumph over death was once-
and-for-all, but the role of the witnesses continues

over and over again. As the Easter morning angelic
visitors instructed the empty tomb witnesses, the
first work of resurrection faith is to remember. Re-
member Christ's words. Remember Christ's stories.
Remember Christ's signs. Remember Christ's prom-
ises. It is this remembering that will "re-member"
each new .- .. i .... to the empty tomb and the
miracle of resurrection. It is this remembering that
will "re-member" the gospel within the heart of ev-
ery disciple.
Those who have seen the empty tomb must
spend their lives Ir ii, ;.. resurrection. Fir ii ..
resurrection means re-telling the story of the Good
Friday sacrifice and the Easter morning miracle again
and again throughout our entire life.
Even when recounting the resurrection seems to
bring no real results, we are still called to practice
and to keep p "i i i. We are still called to witness
and keep witnessing to the world. We are called to
continuously work resurrection faith into every cor-
ner of our lives.
We serve not just a risen Savior. We serve a rising
Savior. More than that, we serve a continually rising
Savior who enables all who embrace resurrection
to rise to every occasion. Jesus defeats death daily.
His resurrection is a continual miracle replayed and
rewound for every ..i. . i.... for every situation,
and for everyone who reaches out in the darkness in
search of the light and for every dis-membered per-
son who needs re-membering.
Thanks be to God who can take little and make

Resurrection Editorial
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
I read somewhere, "What would the Editor of
the Jerusalem Daily News have written following
the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?" The Editorial went
some like this:
"The startling event reported on these pages is
the main topic of conversation in the city today is al-
most unbelievable. Two comments are in order. First,
we should remember that our prophets in centuries
gone by have predicted our Messiah would rise from
the dead. You recall that our great king David said in
his sixteenth psalm, 'For thou wilt not leave my soul
in Sheol; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to
see corruption."
Since David did not escape corruption, these
words could not apply to him. Our scholars agree
that these words apply to the Messiah. Secondly, we
should remember that this Jesus on many occasions
openly stated that he would rise the third day after
His death.
Our chief priest apparently were the only ones
who took his words seriously. Our religious lead-
ers urged the death of Jesus on the ground of blas-
phemy that he had said he was equal to God. It
hardly seems likely that Jehovah would honor a
blasphemer by allowing him to rise from the dead.
And there have been too many witnesses to doubt
his resurrection.

pp- HEALTHCARE

Hendry County, get ready to say so long to cigarettes

By Glenda Wilson
Every smoker has plenty of good reasons
to quit, but most times a person just can't
do it alone. They don't have to Hendry Re-
gional Medical Center is here to help.
This past January, the hospital (and its
campuses) became a smoke-free healthcare
institution, and David Theroux, Cardiopul-
monary Director, has been scheduling and
conducting "Quit Smoking Now" classes
-each consisting of six free smoking cessa-
tion sessions for the public.
Now, Hendry Regional is in a position to
do even more. The Florida Department of
Health (Bureau of Tobacco Prevention) has
recently awarded approximately $800,000 to
the hospital.
Marilyn Leeds, Executive Director of the
Lake Okeechobee Rural Health Network
(LORHN), was instrumental in helping
the hospital to receive this smoking cessa-

tion grant from the Florida Department of
Health. After discussing the possibilities
with Craig Cudworth (who at that time was
the hospital CEO), last year, Marilyn took it
upon herself to document the needs of the
county and write the proposal. It paid off,
when, less than three months later, Hendry
Regional Medical Center became the proud
recipient of this fantastic opportunity.
Hendry Regional Medical Center will now
begin working diligently with the services of
a Grant Manager, Supervisor of Cessation
Services, Cessation Specialist, and Program
Coordinator to fulfill the conditions and
scope of work, as specified by the grant.
The hospital will focus on:
Employees Promoting the smoke-
free campus through incentive programs,
tobacco-free policies, orientation, commu-
nications, training and health benefits.
Patients Providing education and re-

Religion
Continued From Page 1

The only logical conclusion is that Jesus is our
promised Messiah. To acknowledge this lowly Galile-
an as the Son of God and our Redeemer will be very
difficult to do. We looked for a conquering king. Yet
we can see in Jesus the fulfilment of the ceremonies
that we have observed in our temple for thousands
of years.
Some of our leaders have now publicly stated
that they are believers. Nicodemus, one of our hon-
ored rulers openly aided in the burial of Jesus. It will
be a serious indictment on us if we stubbornly refuse
to admit the fact of the resurreciton, or if we admit
the fact and do not accept all that it implies."
Well, on the day of Pentecost, just 50 days after
the resurrection, Peter preached the gospel for the
first time. Three thousand responded by 1, i. pi,,'-.
of their sins and being baptized for remission of sins
to receive the Holy Spirit. Thus Christ's Church was
begun and continues on today!

... And they lived happily
ever after... And they did! Af-
ter easter
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
I was visiting someone one afternoon
who told me her daughters were coming to visit and
then began to cry. I asked her "Why are you crying?
This should be a happy time!" She answered "Be-
cause I will miss them so much when they leave
. ....' I had learned that she had other problems
and disappointments; apparently which had seri-
ously affected her and caused her great difficulties.
The fear i .. i.... coming to an end" paralyzed
her more than it does for most of us.
We'd always look forward to vacations, knowing
that they too would come to an end, but that didn't
keep us from enjoying them. I have shared with many
their looking forward to retirement; a kind of "vaca-
tion that doesn't come to an end" and have been
I .ii 1. -. .1 to see many who enjoy their later years
doing things they've dreamed about in the past, and
now can share and accomplish with loved ones.
We've just celebrated Easter and the message
is that there will come a time when we have those
special moments, and they don't come to an end!
Many people I know live doing what is required to be
able tdo what is fulfilling or enriching and refresh
ing; a long weekend away, a holiday celebration with
family and loved ones, a trip with the kids to a theme
park, and then back to work.
The days traded off are a worldly necessity; the
hope is for the time when we will one day find a
place to celebrate with loved ones, and where time
won't be limited. That day is ours too. The place is
called "Heaven" and we're God's adopted inheritors.
We will be set free and become "servants to God,
the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result
is eternal life (Romans 6:22)" Now, as we return to
"after Easter" and "back to work," it's great to know
that Easter will go on; and will not end the message
off i ;ii ,ii ,. i.i.. ..to God andwillsharewith
Him one day, and that day will not end.
We spend our days putting away for the vacation,
having a few extra dollars to spend during that special
time and saving "days off" to extend it as long as we
can. We prI I ii .i ii 1._ i, clothes for the special
trip, getting the house ready to close for a few days or
weeks, and making sure that the mail is stopped and
the lawn is cut. Likewise, this life is a time to prepare
for the day when we will be away and to make our
plans to be ready for that life to come.
The things we do are what we can do to get
ready for our Easter, our resurrection to a new and
greater life one that does not come to an end and
one where the message "Well done thou good and
faithful servant" will be ours to hear, too.

State Representative Denise Grimsley (R-Lake Placid) today congratulated
Whitney Thompson of Clewiston for her service to the Florida House. Whit-
ney is in the 6th grade at Clewiston Christian School and is the daughter of
Greg and Denise Thompson. Whitney has been exposed to the day-to-day in-
ner workings of the legislative process," said Representative Grimsley. "This
is an invaluable learning opportunity and I am pleased that a student from
our area has been able to participate." Each House Member has an oppor-
tunity to sponsor one page (aged 12-14) each year. Under the supervision of
the House Sergeant at Arms, pages serve in the chamber, with the members,
as legislation is debated and voted on.

Carleton Baucum "Bubba" showed up
to the state tournament ready to wrestle.
On day one of the competition he wrestled
two unbelievable matches, winning both
and proving he had earned his position at
the state event.
This meant that Bubba was going to
wrestle in the Semi-finals the following day.
If he won this would put him in the finals. It
also meant that he was a State placer. Day
two of competition Bubba had a tough start
which put him in the wrestle backs. Bubba
had a tough second match that day it was
a rematch of the Regional Finals Match, he
fell shy again.
Disappointed with himself Bubba
walked away to cool down. Bubba only

Sugar

Continued From Page 1

"too-sweet" deal in its favor.
U.S. Sugar is indebted and they are look-
ing for a way out at a significant cost to
taxpayers, some argue. The governor, who
announced the state's intent to purchase
the company nearly two years ago, has de-
fended himself in published reports, saying
that the purchase is needed to save the Ev-
erglades.
Meanwhile, U.S. Sugar shoots back at
their rivals, saying that those groups are mo-
tivated not by a sense of honest environmen-
talism, but of profiteering, and resentment
that they weren't included in the deal.
Even members of the district board weigh
in: "Citizens following the U.S. Sugar acqui-
sition have witnessed these special interests
... attempting to turn what is usually a rou-
tine legal review into a stage for distorting
the facts," writes Eric Buermann, chairman
of the district's governing board. "None of
these detractors, nor their well-publicized
spin, will distract the courts from their me-
thodical review and, hopefully, will not fool
the public who for the large part support the
purchase."

Notice of

Public Hearing

The Hendry County Housing
Authority has developed it's Five
Year and 2010 Annual Plan for HUD
and revised it's Section 8
Administrative Plan. The Plans can
be reviewed at the following loca-
tions for review and comment for 45
days starting April 9, 2010:
Clewiston Satellite Office, 100 East El
Paso, Clewiston; and the Social
Services Office, 165 South Lee
Street, LaBelle. On May 25, 2010,the
Hendry county Board of County
Commissioners will hold a public
hearing after 5:00 PM for public
comment and approval at the fol-
lowing location: Hendry County
Courthouse, Commission Board
Room, 25 E. Hickpochee Ave.,
LaBelle, Florida. The Hendry County
Housing Authority is an Equal
Opportunity Employer and does not
discriminate on the basis of race,
color, national origin, sex, religion,
age, or handicapped status in
employment or for the provision of
services.

During a Tuesday media phone confer-
ence, environmentalists said the need to
move forward was great; that they hoped
the supreme court would rule in the state's
favor.
"To get a foothold in the EAA has been
the dream of 35 years," said Nathaniel Reed,
vice chair of the Everglades Foundation.
Addressing concerns that the land ac-
quisition is only one part of the issue, that
funding must still be secured even after the
purchase of the initial 73,000 acres -- and
some say the figure may be in the double-
digit billions of dollars -- to restore the flow
way, Mr. Reed called it "the first step toward
connecting the lake to the Glades and clean-
ing the water as it naturally flows south... as
God has made it flow south."
The issue of utmost importance to en-
vironmentalists is finding an alternative
solution to discharges to coastal estuaries.
Because there is an emphasis placed on
keeping the lake at a manageable level, ad-
dressing concerns of the ability of the de-
cades-old earthen dike to hold back higher
levels of water, the excess water is drained
through the estuaries into the ocean.
This process damages those estuaries
through algae blooms that a representative
with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foun-
dation said makes the rivers "turn green and

the beaches turn red."
Other questions remain. Where will
that funding to restore the natural flow way
come from?
Will that come from the state, the water
district, or federal government?
The Comprehensive Everglades Resto-
ration Project is itself a multi-billion dollar
project whose existence next to the land
purchase is uncertain, although environ-
mentalists say the U.S. Sugar acquisition
puts to rest the need for nearly one-third of
the cost of the CERP project -- which relied
on plans for vast aquifer storage.
Still, what will become of that ambitious
plan?
But, ultimately, everyone should put aside
concerns of cost, said Karl Wickstrom, with
the Rivers Coalition.
"The affordability is absolutely no prob-
lem, itwill fit in the district's budget," he said,
claiming that myths of tax increases to the
16 counties the district serves are wrong.
"You can go on and on with details of
the pricing, but $7,000 (an acre) is good.
We ought to grab it and be happy that we
could."

a single occupant in the car, the driver, later
identified as 24-year-old Uriel Velasquez, of
Clewiston.
Witnesses told police the man had a gun
on him, and said that a passenger had left on
foot, running south toward Twin Lakes.
The victim, Victor Rico, told police that
the suspect attempted to ram his vehicle
into his but missed and hit the utility pole.
When this happened, the suspect reportedly
got out of the car and pointed a gun at Rico.
But after searching the car, police didn't find
a weapon on the suspect, only a water hose
handle that the victim agreed could have
been what he saw. He wasn't sure. What he
was sure of was the charge that the suspect
wanted to ram his vehicle. The victim told
police he could identify the passenger of the
car who fled.
Other witnesses came forward to pro-
vide police with a statement, including one
individual who told police he was in fear of
being run over by the car as he crossed the
street. Given the severity of that claim, the
suspect was taken to the Hendry County
Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a
deadly weapon.
