HC SO: Underground bunker hides drug operation
0-

Submitted photo/HCSO
Fire fighters responding to a blaze in Pioneer came upon a sophisticated underground
marijuana drug operation recently.

Underground drug

operation uncovered

Concealed
operation features
typical grow house
fixtures

By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
CLEWISTON -- In the course
of the past year, the Hendry
County Sheriff's Office has un-
covered many homes which
have been used primarily to
cultivate marijuana.
Part of the discoveries can
be attributed to the tell-tale
signs: wild surges in electri-

cal usage at homes, alerting
officials to the possibility of a
grow house operation inside,
or bands of electrical wires and
components that the suspects
at times lazily scatter around
the home.
But how do you come
across an underground mari-
juana bunker?
It helps if the surrounding
property is on fire.
On Feb. 18, fire fighters re-
sponding to a blaze on Chris-
topher Lane in Pioneer noticed
a curious concrete structure
nearby. When they entered it,
the fire fighters noticed a trap-
door on the floor and, looking

inside, found multiple "freshly
cut bushels of a green herbal
substance they believed to be
marijuana plants hanging from
the ceiling," according to a
press release by Lt. Susan Har-
relle.
Sheriff Steve Whidden was
on scene at the moment, ob-
serving the progress of the fire,
when he was notified.
Armed with a search war-
rant, officials conducted a thor-
ough review of the premises,
including the area the trapdoor
lead to, and found just over 4
pounds of marijuana stocks.

Peek and Rodgers
net $10,000 in
scholarships for
their victory

FLW Outdoors
CLEWISTON, Fla. The
Auburn University team of
Richard Peek of Centre, Ala.
and Caleb Rodgers of Auburn,

Ala., won the National Guard
FLW College Fishing Southeast
Division tournament on Lake
Okeechobee Saturday with six
bass weighing 14 pounds, 7
ounces. The victory earned the
team a $5,000 college scholar-
ship as well as a $5,000 club
college scholarship.
"We really didn't know
what to expect when we came
to Lake Okeechobee," Rodgers
said. "We made the 11-hour
drive from Auburn yesterday

and didn't get any practice
time. My partner and I looked
at a map this morning and de-
cided that we wanted to work a
certain area."
Rodgers said that after read-
ing reports online and looking
at the map, they decided to fish
an area that had big grass mats.
They fished an area called
the Monkey Box that is in the
southwest corner of the lake.
This area is a large flat with

Motorsports

park gear up

for opening

Veteran race figure set in stone, with children 12

purchases property

By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
CLEWISTON -- Terry Wall
said he is excited about the
grand opening of the Hen-
dry County Motorsports Park.
Formerly the Hendry County
Speedway, the property on U.s.
27 was purchased recently by
veteran race organizer Ken Kin-
ney.
"We're trying to revitalize
it and make it a huge part of
the county," said Mr. Wall, the
park's marketing manager.
Having experienced much
success with his own United
Dirt Late Model Challenge Se-
ries, with races across Florida,
Georgia and Alabama, the new
owner is hopeful, Mr. Wall said,
that the track will serve as a
tourism and economic boon to
the area.
He certainly has his work
cut out for him.
Previously owned by Chris
Ponsoldt, and in the middle of a
recession, the track never quite
took off in the way its owners
imagined.
"It really didn't do well at
all," accedes Mr. Wall.
Across online forums, and
even in closer discussions at
home, the track simply wasn't
what fans were asking for.
"The worst races I have ever
been to," said one disgruntled
forum poster on karnac.net.
"[There were] supposed to
be time limits on races, [but]
the first feature was the street
stocks and they were on the
track for two hours. That was
my first and last trip to that
track."
But Mr. Wall said it is ex-
actly the recession and the new
owner's experience that will
help the track succeed.
"We are going to just try to
make it a family place to go,
with cheap family entertain-
ment," said Mr. Wall. By his es-
timation, a family of four might
decide to forego something a
more expensive outing for a
four- or five-hour evening at the
races.
Fees for adults should be
$10, though the number is not

and under entering free.
"We're going to try to keep
the food prices at a reasonable
rate, too," Mr. Wall said.
The track is centrally locat-
ed in Clewiston, and because
of its location could tap into
racing fans from both coasts
and along South Florida. It is
the southernmost track in the
country, Mr. Wall said.
And its new owner is cer-
tainly to stranger to the racing
circuit. A well-known figure,
Mr. Kinney has raced for many
years, including racing at the
Hendry track, and is known for
putting on entertaining show-
cases.
News of his purchase of
the Hendry track has filtered
through the racing world and
fans are anxious.
"I can't wait to see how
things go as this track was
struggling big time and Ken
has so much energy and enthu-
siasm to offer to dirt racing,"
someone wrote on 4m.net.
According to Mr. Wall, the
final contract has been signed,
and all work now is focused on
the April I grand opening date.
Management has been in
talks with sponsors, and has
announced that the Clewiston
Inn will be one of its sponsors.
The owners are considering
whether to run three nights and
feature all major racing divi-
sions. The specific events have
not yet been announced, but
it is expected that the formal
schedule will be unveiled in the
next few weeks on the track's
Web site.
The first year goals include
attracting 30,000 people to the
site.
"This would be huge," said
Mr. Wall.
For more information, visit
the official Web site: hendry-
countyracing.com. The track
is located at 9985 W U.S. 27 in
Clewiston.

Letters to the Editor

City Taxes
Prior to 2004, our City taxes
fluctuated between 52 cents and
65 cents for every dollar paid in
County Taxes.
In proportion to Hendry Coun-
ty taxes, City of Clewiston taxes
which were equivalent to 65 per-
cent of county taxes in 2004 have
now increased to 97 percent.
I pointed that out at the Clewis-
ton City Commission meeting
Feb. 16. Later in the meeting, City
Manager Wendell Johnson told
the Commissioners that there is
no rationale to compare tax rates
between the City and the County.
How could one reach such a
conclusion?
The taxes come from the same
tax base!
The person responsible for
preparing our City Budget and
presenting it doesn't understand
this fact.
Let's hope the City Commis-
sioners understand it.
So why did our City taxes start
rising so dramatically in 2006,
2007 and 2008? What level of
service from the City increased to
justify the increases?
These increases have particu-
larly hurt our small businesses,
and those business owners need
all the help they can get these
days.
From my viewpoint, nothing
dramatic in either City or County
services has changed during this
time that would justify the ratio
changes.
Our County Commissioners
got serious and found ways to cut
the budget and cut our millage
rate over those years.
It's time for the City Commis-
sioners to get busy and do the
same.
Please contact as many City
Commissioners as you can and
express your views on City taxes.
Better yet, come to the City's Bud-
get Workshop meeting at 5:30
p.m. on March 12 and tell them
all in person.
I would hope that small busi-
ness owners would review their
tax bills for the past 4 or 5 years
and let their voices be heard, too.

Everglades and U.S.
Sugar
U.S. Sugar was just as stunned
as the public by Governor Crist's
bold proposal to acquire our
company.
We have farmed this land for
nearly 80 years, and we have just
invested hundreds of millions of
dollars in making our sugar man-
ufacturing operations the most ef-
ficient in North America.
Our citrus operations already
were the best in the world.
However, the Governor was
serious in his interest and our
board agreed to listen. Twenty
years' fractious history of Ever-
glades disputes may have prod-
ded their interest.
Over the many months of dis-
cussions and negotiations, our
Company committed to a major
shift.
Governor Crist's vision that
U.S. Sugar's land could provide a
"legacy footprint" for Everglades
restoration and revitalize the land-
scape of South Florida appealed
to our long term interests in this
area.
This footprint is a more ap-
pealing legacy for so proud and
historic a company than farming
interspersed with rock mining,
development, landfills or other
actitvies needed to maximize
land value.
Our land will provide opportu-
nities for water storage and treat-
ment that should enable remain-
ing agriculture in the area to be
sustainable as well.
While U.S. Sugar moved for-
ward negotiating with the SFW-
MD, competitors moved forward
with a campaign to discredit the
sale. First, they attacked the pur-
chase price.
That attack failed because the
$1.34 billion price was set dead in
the middle of the two most recent
independent, government real
estate appraisals that came in at
$1.37 and $1.3 billion.
Their first attack failing, they
then attacked the 7-year lease-
back agreement.
This leaseback allows the state
to acquire the land now and still
have it remain productive until
the state is ready to construct res-
toration projects.
There are three important
things wrong with our com-
petitors' attacks on the $50/ acre
leaseback.
Those attacking the lease-
back are the same competitor
sugar farmers who had similar
long-term state leases when the
state purchased Talisman Sugar -
leases that were $0/acre for many
years.
Florida Crystals still leases tens
of thousands of acres of Talisman
property today for $59/acre. Plus,
the SFWMD pays them millions
more to keep the land free of ex-

otic species.
Our lease requires we pay the
lease on gross acres.
Most other agricultural leases,
including Florida Crystals' current
$59/acre lease, pay only on net
crop acres.
Most importantly, if the state
tried to lease all 180,000 acres of
land in the Everglades Agricultural
Area, there would be no market
at all for much of the land.
U.S. Sugar's lease rate takes
into account the sheer scale of
this deal and the cost of increased
Best Management Practices.
The District negotiated a fair
deal, including the seven year
lease, which results in nearly
$100 million in lease payments
and cost avoidance.
Closer to home, we under-
stand the anxiety toward the fu-
ture expressed by our employees,
growers and communities.
While we don't have a magic
wand to make every thing better
for every one, we have done sev-
eral things to ease the situation.
Our current and former em-
ployees who are also stockhold-
ers will receive an estimated $365
per share from this sale.
In addition, we have provided
a severance of 1-2 year's pay for
all employees who lose their job
seven years from now as a result
of this transaction.
Additionally, U.S. Sugar pro-
vided in the sale contract that the
District can immediately transfer
3000 acres not under cultivation
to local municipalities/govern-
ments for economic develop-
ment.
Hundreds of acres could be
transferred to local communities
immediately upon closing.
We have committed to en-
couraging the Governor, the
legislature and state agencies to
quickly develop a real economic
transition plan for the local com-
munity.
It is also important to keep in
mind that the land-only transac-
tion allows U.S. Sugar to retain
ownership of the sugar/citrus
processing facilities and railroad
operations, ensuring they contin-
ue operating well into the future.
This secures jobs and econom-
ic activity for our communities.
Our railroad runs throughout the
farming area and can economi-
cally deliver cane to the Clewiston
mill, making the mill and railroad
valuable assets regardless of the
land attached.
The District's expert estimated
our railroad gives us a 90 percent
transportation edge over com-
petitors. Likewise, most citrus
processing plants operate inde-
pendently of grove ownership.
Over 80 percent of the fruit
currently processed at our South-
ern Gardens plant comes from
independent growers, and we ex-
pect we could easily contract the
remaining 20 percent.
While we have a signed con-
tract, this is not completely a
done deal.
We made our case for this ac-
quisition to our board and soon
must apply for stockholder ap-
proval.
In the meantime, the law re-
quires that we try to obtain better
offers for our company.
Many other entities have ex-
pressed interest now that we are
a willing seller.
Some have said they intend
to make a better offer than the
state. Should a superior offer
emerge, we would accept that
offer, provided, however that the
South Florida Water Management
District would have the right to
match that offer.
Finally, the District must also
secure funding for the acquisi-
tion.
That said, this acquisition is the
biggest and best opportunity that
will ever exist to bring 180,000
acres (nearly 300 sq. miles of his-
toric Everglades) into public own-
ership at one time.
Regardless of what people
think of our motives, profits or
problems, the fact is that many
have had that same vision over
the years, but Governor Crist is
making it happen.
Robert E. Coker, Senior
Vice President

Not so fast on U.S.
Sugar land purchase
When given the basic details
about the proposed purchase by
the state of 180,000 acres of land
from U.S. Sugar for $1.3 billion
in order to help restore the Ever-
glades, Florida voters are about
equally split over the deal.
Based on what they currently
know, 45 percent statewide say
they are opposed, while 44 per-
cent support it and 11 percent are
undecided.
However, a majority of state
voters (62 percent) say they have
heard little or nothing about the
deal, and when given additional
arguments from both sides, op-
position to the plan increases.
Statewide, 60 percent agree
with opponents that spending

this $1.3 billion is not a top pri-
ority now given the state's finan-
cial situation, 61 percent feel that
waiting would produce a better
deal, and 64 percent feel the time
is not right given the state of the
nation's economy.
This is not surprising, as only 2
percent of Florida voters currently
feel protecting the environment
should be the highest priority of
state and local government.
Higher priority is now placed
on creating jobs, providing health-

care, improving education and re-
solving the state's budget deficit.
After hearing arguments about
the deal, both pro and con, a ma-
jority of state voters (56 percent)
then say they disapprove of it,
while approval drops to just 37
percent.

aging Director, Mason-Dixon

World champion boxer visits Pahokee gym

Submitted photo/Mike LeStrange
World Champion women's boxer Laura "Lady Ram" Ramsey, visited Pahokee PAL boxers last
week. The boxer told the boys about her personal story, and even sparred for a few rounds
with some of the athletes.

By Steven Tillings
Last Friday evening, top mid-
dleweight female boxer Laura

(Lady Ram) Ramsey came to Pa-
hokee to visit the PAL youth box-
ing program.
Boxing teams from the sher-

iff's Belle Glade PAL, and Palm
Beach Gardens PAL came to the
Pahokee boxing gym located at
603 Bacom Point Road to see the

top female boxer.
The Pahokee gym's coach
deputy sheriff Mike LeStrange in-
troduced Ms. Ramsey to all the
adults and youth in attendance.
The professional boxer was
greeted with a standing ovation
as she entered the facility.
Ramsey came with gifts for the
youth boxers with her life story,
and how she rose to become a
boxing champion.
Ramsey told the kids that her
life was saved through boxing.
Prior to becoming a boxer,
Ramsey was obese, and as a re-
sult of her excessive weight, her
body functions shut down, mak-
ing her extremely ill.
She reluctantly tried the box-
ing training routine and found
herself losing weight. She subse-
quently became one of the best
athletes in the sport. Lilia Ali, who
is the former heavyweight cham-
pion's daughter, was signed to
box Ramsey, however, Ali backed
out of the match for an unknown
reason.
After speaking to the 30
youngsters, Ramsey watched and
evaluated their sparring sessions
as coaches Willie Wiggens from
Belle Glade's team, Afshin Mot-
edaelny from Palm Beach Gar-
dens, and LeStrange assigned the
sparring matches.

Visitors to that Far, Distant Shore

By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum
The high bows of the ocean-
going dugouts rose and then
plunged downward like sharp
daggers though the cresting
waves.
The long, thick bodied crafts
sank deep into the dark, treacher-
ous troughs of the waves, before
rising once again to meet the
mountainous walls of green wa-
ter that toyed with each dugout.
Men, burnt by a thousand suns,
showed no fear as they gazed
across the stormy tempest with
experienced eyes that were intent
on an invisible path, which would
lead them to a distant shore.
Their dugouts followed a true
course across the Florida Straits,
traveling unerringly like a flock of
migratory birds to a fixed point
on the hidden horizon.
The mariners paddled tire-
lessly the entire day, steering their
dugouts through contrary cur-
rents and squalls.
Hours of endless toil finally
rewarded the mariners with tiny
distant clouds that formed on the
horizon.
The growing clouds gradually
materialized into "Firma Tierra."
It was a land of lush, tropical
forest, green sloping hills and
great flocks of parrots that paint-
ed the sky in a barrage of rainbow
colors.
A distant shore called Isla de
Cotorras, or Isle of Parrots, an is-
land we know today as Cuba.
Could primitive Cypress dug-
outs survive such a "Tall Tale"
journey across the Florida Straits
- a place where treacherous wa-
ters from an oceanic river called
the Gulf Stream, collides with the
prevailing winds in a constant
duel of wills?
Is there historical proof that
such a craft existed among the
Native American Nations in south
Florida?
It is time to take 'A Walk in The
Past" and read some interesting,
historical tidbits written by a long
forgotten Spanish soldier.
The Spanish established three
forts in south Florida during the

20, 2009, in her home of 32 years, in

Formerly of Milwaukee, Dolores is
also survived by son, Dennis; grand-
children, Kris, Travis R., Jeffrey; and
four sisters and brothers all residents
of the Milwaukee area.

1500s, to protect their shipping
interest and citizens from other
European powers and Indians.
Pedro Menendez, the first ap-
pointed Spanish governor of
Florida, was initially successful
in establishing friendly, political
relations with the Indian Nations
that lived around the graphically
dispersed, Spanish forts in south
Florida.
However, this peace was short
lived because of Spanish harsh-
ness and rivalry among the Indian
Nations that bred contempt, hate
and wars.
The warring Indians made it
futile for the Spaniards to stay,
so they eventually abandoned all
three forts.
The departing Spaniards left
in their wake, vengeful Indian na-
tions that were quick to repay an
old score.
The Indians vented a cold ruth-
lessness on any Spanish person
who had the misfortune to wreck
on their coast.
An unknown number of men,
women and children became vic-
tims to the Indian hostilities that
lasted from 1571 to 1612.
Most victims were immediate-
ly killed, but some were enslaved
and reserved for a later fateful
day.
In 1612, the Spanish Florida
governor, Fernandez de Olivera,
sent a messenger to request a
truce with the Calusa Indians.
The Calusa Casique, who
dominated the Calusa Nation and
other neighboring Indians, re-
sponded to the message, asking
for peace and friendship with the
Spaniards.
It is strange that the Calusa
would want peace and friendship
with the Spaniards, since some
of the Calusas probably remem-
bered the encroaching forts and
harsh treatment that the Span-
iards had meted out to them and
other Indian Nations.
The Calusa Casique's motives
were probably purely political
because the Spanish had success-
fully established forts, settlements
and missions in Central and North
Florida.

Kenneth Eugene Bishop
PALM BEACH GARDENS Ken-
neth Eugene Bishop, age 76, of Palm
Beach Gardens, formerly of Moore
Haven, passed away Feb. 25, 2009 in
West Palm Beach,
Arrangements by Akin-Davis Fu-
neral Home LaBelle.
Robert Percy
Silcox Sr., 81
ATHENS, GA Robert Percy Sil-
cox Sr., passed away in his home,
on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, after a
brief illness. He was 81.
Born in Venus, Mr. Silcox had
made his home in Athens for over
40 years. He served in the United
States Navy and attended Officers
School at Georgia Tech. Mr. Silcox
began his railroad career in Sebring,
with the Atlantic Coast Line Rail-
road. Over 40 years later, he retired
as Roadmaster of the Abbeville-At-
lanta Branch of CSX Transportation.

There were lurking fears or
phobia that other Indian tribes
living in Central and North Florida
would make alliances with the
Spaniards and become a power-
ful, threatening force to the Calu-
sa Indian Nation.
The Calusa Casique was par-
tially correct in his assumptions.
However, the threat would come
much latter and from Indian Na-
tions living further north.
No doubt the governor's rea-
sons for peace were also strictly
political because he wanted the
looting, killing and enslavement
of Spanish citizens to end.
Governor Olivera sent an ex-
pedition under the command
of Juan Rodriguez de Cortaya to
confirm the messenger's report
that the Calusa Casique really
wanted peace.
Cortaya set out with a launch
down the west coast of Florida
with one pilot (navigator) and 20
soldiers for Tampa Bay.
The expedition made its way
to Tampa Bay without mishap
and then southward to Charlotte
Harbor, where the Calusa Ca-
sique lived.
Cortaya reported in his journal
the numerous Indian villages and
Indians he encountered at Tampa
Bay and present day Charlotte
Harbor.
His report is interesting be-
cause the south Florida Indian
Nations were still very populous.
They had not yet been weak-
ened by European diseases that
would one day sweep across the
Florida Peninsula like the Black
Plague, bringing death and de-
struction to the Florida Indian Na-
tions.
When Cortaya entered Char-
lotte Harbor, he was greeted by
sixty canoes and a great number
of unarmed male Indians who
brought many women with them,
which was a sign of peace.
The Casique arrived in a dug-
out that carried 40 people, greet-
ing Coraya and his crew in a
friendly manner.
The Calusa Casique gave the
Spaniards gold presents and a Ne-
gro from Havana, Cuba, who had

Mr. Silcox touched and molded the
lives of the many men who were
lucky enough to work beside him
during his career. His family and an-
cestors are proud to have had over
350 years of building, maintaining,
and operating various railroads
around the Southeast.
Mr. Silcox was preceded in death
by his parents, Annie and Percy Sil-
cox; a brother, Bill Silcox; and a sis-
ter, Betty Martin.
Survivors include his loving wife of
58 years, Louise Silcox; daughter,
Lou A. (John) Sharp of Watkinsville;
son, Tate (Theresa) Silcox of Winter-
ville; and granddaughters, Annie
Sharp (Atlanta) and Sarah Sharp
(Watkinsville); as well as numerous
cousins. He is also survived by his
faithful "little dog", Tinker.
Mr. Silcox was a kind, devoted
man who spent his life loving his
family, his Lord, the Railroad, the
Chicago Cubs and his little dog. He
was loved and respected by many

been blown off course in a dug-
out by a storm to their shores.
The Casique told Coraya there
were other Spanish castaways
and that he would return them to
the Spaniards.
The Calusa Cacique promised
Coraya that the Calusa nation
would not harm shipwrecked
persons in the future.
Cortaya's journal mentioned a
dugout with a large, load capac-
ity of 40 people. A dugout of this
size could probably safely travel
across the Florida Straits to Cuba
or the Bahamas Islands.
Further evidence for sea voy-
ages to and from Cuba are sub-
stantiated when Cortaya's journal
alludes to the Negro from Ha
vana, Cuba, who was blown off
course in his dugout by a storm
to the Calusa shores.
Another interesting Spanish
memoir states that Ponce De Leon
was cursed in Spanish by Florida
Indians in 1521 that had fled Cuba
to escape the Spanish cruelty.
We will probably never know
how far the South Florida Indians
and Caribbean Indians ventured
on their epic, oceanic voyages.
I would like to think that they
had the same vision and spirit
that all adventurous people have,
"To go where no man has gone
before."
There will be more "Tale Tales"
in next week's edition "A Walk in
The Past,"
when the Spanish return to
south Florida in the late 1600s.
I hope you have enjoyed this
story. Contact the Clewiston
Museum if you have questions,
artifacts, pictures, or a "Whale
of a Tale" that you would like to
share.

their keepers on a Reaction Inno-

"Since we were one of the later
flights to check in we thought we
had a pretty good chance at win-
ning because the afternoon bite
really turned on," Rodgers said.
"When we checked in we saw
that the other Auburn team was
sitting in first place so we knew
it was going to be close. Luck-
ily, my partner had a good kicker
that put us on top. It was about a
7 -pounder.
"This was a great experience
and I can't wait to fish the next
tournament," Rodgers said.
Rounding out the top five
teams are Auburn University -
Dennis Parker of Auburn, Ala.,
and Shaye Baker of Tallassee, Ala.
(four bass, 12-14, $2,500 college
scholarship, $2,500 club college
scholarship); Georgia Southern -

The entire schedule, which is or-

Full time students enrolled

the events. Schools in each divi-
sion can send two-person teams
to each of the four qualifying
events in their division, with each
event limited to a maximum of
40 teams. Each team will have
an opportunity to win $10,000
for first and $2,000 through fifth
place. The prize money will be
split evenly between the win-
ning team's club and the school
they represent. The tournaments
are free to enter, boats and driv
ers will be provided and all col-
legiate teams will receive a travel
allowance. The top five teams in
each of the qualifying events will
advance to one of five televised
three-day FLW National Guard
Regional Championships.
Each school represented in a
televised Regional Championship

will have team shirts and boats
provided by Ranger. The purse
for each Regional Championship
will be a Ranger 177TR with a 90-
horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha
outboard wrapped in school
colors for the winning club and
$25,000 for the school they rep-
resent. Awards of $6,000 will also

Wrestling
Continued From Page 1

In the 215 weight class Adam
Trevino took third. Adam is
Clewiston's first state placer since
Chris Smith placed fourth in 2005.
Adam lost in the quarter finals to
a athlete from Miami Pace H.S.
but met up with that same athlete
in the match for third and fourth
and redeemed his loss. Adam
wrestled all 4 years and is a three
time district placer (2x time dis-
trict champ Jr. and Senior year)
and two time regional placer (lx
regional champ) and state quali-
fier. One year state placer. Trevino
went 27-2 this year and redeemed
both his loses. Trevino would like
to pursue wrestling and football
in college.
Honorable Mention in the 152
weight class to Joey Cordova,
who was one match away from
being a state placer. Joey finished
around 8th place which means
that he was around the 8th best
kid in his weight class in the state
of Florida in the 1A division. Joey
also wrestled all four years. Joey
placed all four years at districts,
2x champ (Jr. and Senior year),
2x regional placer and State quali-
fier. Joey ends his season with a
record of 36-8.
Another Honorable Mention
in the 171 weight class goes to
Damarian Allen, who wrestled
all four years. Damarian is a three

time district placer, two time re-
gional placer and state qualifier.
Damarian ends his season with a
record of 23-7.
Clewiston will be losing six
seniors, three wrestlers and three
mat girls: Captains Joey Cordova,
Adam Trevino, and Damarian Al-
len along with Senior mat girls
Zondra Crawford, Ashleigh Rice
and Josie Boykin.

Registration opens for the

Big "0" Birding Extravaganza

Clewiston Early registration
is now underway for the Hen-
dry/Glades County Big "0" Bird-
ing Extravaganza scheduled for
April 3-6.
What organizers envision
as becoming the largest bird-
themed event in South Central
Florida, this year's extravaganza
has grown into a three-day festi-
val followed by a day long eco-
tourism seminar.
Early registrants can take ad-
vantage of deep registration dis-
counts between now and March
6.
"Our goal this year is to intro-
duce birding enthusiasts to what
this region has to offer," says fes-
tival committee chair Janet Pap-
inaw. "We've received an incred-
ible amount of regional support
and hope to make the festival
affordable to everyone."
An all-inclusive festival pass, if
ordered by March 6, is only $100.
After March 6, the same pass is
still only $125. Proof of Hendry
or Glades County residency will
earn you an additional 10 per-
cent discount regardless of when
you register.
While the all-inclusive pass
EXCLUDES accommodations,
it does afford the festival-goer
four full days of birding activities,

Great Florida Birding Trail: "The
value of eco-tourists to local
businesses."
"We have a full schedule of
activities planned, but people
can still find time to bird on their
own by foot, car, canoe, boat or
bike," says Papinaw.
"Single day passes and single
tour passes are also for sale, in-
cluding discounts for providing
your own transportation.
We are very grateful to our
planning partners and financial
sponsors for helping make this
event affordable. We're happy to
showcase our natural reserves
for the great birding hot spots
that they are."
