YOUNG 'TIGER'
TEARING UP LINKS
By GEORGE H. NEWMAN
gnewman@mediageneral.com
Finding stories to write about in
Plant City i a lot easier t han it used -
to be.
In the past like those early days
almost seven years ago when I first .
started at The Courier there were
dry spots, particularly in the
summer, when you had to beat the
bushes to come up with a story.
Thankfully those days are gone.
Now it is hard to keep up with
what is happening around town.
Often there is so much news and so
many events going on that there
isn't enough time or space to cover
all of it. "
But once in a while an e-mail,
phone call or letter will arrive that
is too hard to ignore, no matter
how busy the schedule.
"Come out to the golf course and
Watch my 3 1/2-year-old son hit
golf balls," Tifaney Cothren told me
over the phone. "I've been told he
is the best golfer his age in the
country."
The noticeably proud mother
had me hooked before I had hung
up the phone.
I have played the game of golf for
years.
At one time, back in the 1980s, I
thought I was pretty good. Even
though my game has fallen as my
waistline has expanded, I figured
that with the proper training and a
little practice I could take on this
hotshot little golfer and really show
him what for.
After seeing Cole Cothren prac-
ticing at Walden Lake Golf and
Country Club, I decided that I had
better challenge him as soon as
possible. Next year, I might not be
able to beat him.
Cole is the second son of Tifaney
and Matt Cothren.
This little guy is 3 feet 6 1/2
inches tall and he weighs all of 43
pounds. Even in this ridiculously
politically correct world that we live
in, his size would definitely qualify ,

Year In Review

-2005 In Plant City

JANUARY THROUGH JUNE
By GEORGE H. NEWMAN
gnewman@mediageneral.com
January
Lance Cpl. James Phillips, 21, died
fighting for his country. Friends
remember him for his smile. Friends
and family said Phillips brought good
cheer wherever he went, and a fellow
Marine said, "I never served with
anybody better." Phillips was killed in
Iraq's Al Anbar Province Dec. 23, 2004.
He was buried near his Turkey Creek
home, Dec. 30.
Mayor and City Commissioner
Mike Sparkman announced he would
not seek re-election for the commis-
sion in 2005. Sparkman served on the
commission for 16 years, six of those as
mayor. He was the last mayor to be
chosen by election in Plant City, 1994-
95, and the first one to be selected by
his fellow commissioners, 1995-96.
Darren and Heather Kaiser were
victims of a double murder Jan. 14 at
their Gordon Street home and business
where they sold cars through the
Internet. Police later arrested Benja-
min James Wibben, 25, a Fort Myers
resident, and charged him with the
shooting deaths.
The 2005 Florida Strawberry
Queen, Ashley Watkins, and her court
- Catherine Walker, First Maid Caycee
Hampton, Brooke Ellis and Amy Stew-
art where selected by the judges at
Tomlin Middle School on Jan. 22.
The Greater Plant City Chamber of
Commerce's annual Chairman's Ban-
quet at the Ramada Inn Convention
Center attracted more than 240 people
who watched the passing of the gavel.
Outgoing chairwoman Jennifer Clos-
shey turned the post over to City Com-
missioner Rick Lott during the Jan. 27
event.

February
Plant City High School senior Der-
rick Hallback, who led the county in
rushing yardage with 1,918 yards, scor-
ing 23 touchdowns, verbally com-
mitted to attend the University of
Charleston in West Virginia.
The Durant High School Cougars
wrestling team won the Class 3A-Dis-
trict 5 championship and advanced 12
wrestlers to the regional competition
while scoring 206 points to take first
place at the Region 2 playoffs in Pine-

llas Park.
Five businesses were.destroyed by
a fire that would turn out to be arson,
leaving nearly an entire block in smol-
dering ruin. The fire started just before
midnight Feb. 21 and burned for
several hours before four responding
fire departments could get the blaze
under control. The Collins Street busi-
nesses consumed by the fire included
The Olde Village Shoppes, Yesterday's
Attic, the Hillsborough County DUI
Center, the Buzbee Law Office and
Mark Electronics where the fire origi-
nated. The Parkside Caf6 and the
Whistle Stop Cafe were also affected by
the fire and smoke.
On Feb. 21, after a five-week inves-
tigation, Plant City Police reported a
25-year-old Fort Myers man, Benjamin
James Wibben, confessed to "his
involvement in the murder of Darren
and Heather Kaiser, and to being pres-
ent when the murders occurred." Wib-
ben's trial was to begin Nov. 14, but
may not begin for another year because
he recently hired a new lawyer.
Joe Perez, former principal at
Durant High School, now the school
district's personnel services manager,
was named the top high school

FAMILY CARE
PHARMACY ;T

Mark Filosi
Registered Pharmacist

Oral Cancer -
Silent Killer
Only a little over half of the people
diagnosed with oral cancer will live
more than five years. This is mainly
because oral cancers begin as painless
red or white spots in the mouth or on
the tongue that often go unnoticed.
Three quarters of the oral cancer
cases are in smokers or people who
have more than two drinks per day.
In the last 5 years, painless, easy-to-
use brush-biopsy test kits have been
available to dentists. This makes it very
convenient for your regular dentist to
include an oral cancer screening and
test (if necessary) in your routine visit.
Early detection saves lives!

Bell tolls for charity
John McCaughey of the Plant City Lions Club rings in a few
donations for the Salvation Army at the Wal-Mart Super-
center in Plant City Dec. 23. Starting Dec. 12, 36 volunteers
took part in the fundraiser, according to Bruce and Marga-
ret Rodwell, who headed up the fundraising effort in Plant
City. Organizers say they expect to exceed last year's total
of $4,147.17. "Thank you to the citizens of Plant City. They
proved once again what a wonderful and caring community
they are," Bruce Rodwell said.

BETTY'S PLACE

Historical Society Celebrates Season With Tour

BETTY
BRIGGS
Columnist

The rain stopped, Christ-
mas lights sparkled and
Dallas and Milene Powell's
koi arrived from Japan just in
time for this year's candle-
light tour by the East Hills-
borough Historical Society
Dec. 17.
Close to 100 guests enjoyed
the hospitality of Guy and
Lois Ford, Jimmie Dan and
Karen Robinson and the
Powells who opened their
homes in Plant City's historic
district for the tour.
The society served home-
made desserts, including the
distinctly Southern red velvet
cake, tea and coffee in the
cozy archives at the 1914
Plant City High School
Community Center..
East Hillsborough Histori-
cal Society president Shelby
Bender and her team did a
great job. Of course, they had
a lot to work with; gracious
homeowners and three
beautiful homes.

Seeing old friends
One thing I love about
Christmas is seeing old
friends.
I've never forgotten what
my friend Dr. Larry Bailey said
about true friendship: "You
may not see someone but
once every two years, but
when you do, you pick up
right where you left off."
Funny how I have no
trouble recognizing old found
friends, but it's their kids I
have a hard.time With! They
sure grow up quick. I recently
saw Betty Jo and Billy Vernon
(who hadn't changed a bit),
but they had to point out their
sons, Chris and Jini.
Chris and family were up
from Naples and Jim and
family live next door in

Above, Florrie Orem Todd stands next to a photo of Peninsular
Telephone Company's 1953 Christmas party where she was an
employee for 35 years. Florrie is standing on the far left in the
photo, which was displayed at the Plant City Photo Archives. At
left, Todd Shuff poses with the first-place trophy his Plant City
Porkers team won at the annual Plant City Pig Jam Nov. 19.

Lakeland. I saw Dr. Alec
Sanchez, too, who delivered
many Plant City babies and
was a neighbor of the Ver-
non's for years. He was
headed to Maryland to visit
daughter Mary and family for
Christmas.

Baggett Christmas party
I didn't dare, but I was
tempted to ask Jim and Susan
Baggett for a doggie bag at
their annual Christmas party
in their historic home. The
food was incredible.
To local attorney David
Galloway: Are you sure those
were chef's pants?
Shelby Bender and I
thought they looked like
pajamas covered with water-
melons. David is a food critic
for In the Field magazine. Jim
is a real estate appraiser here
and Susan is vice president of
Platinum Bank in Plant City.
Great party Jim and Susan!

Kudos to Lauren
Elizabeth Despain
Congratulations to Lauren
Elizabeth Despain, one of 226
Florida Southern students to
receive degrees Dec. 17. She
graduated with a bachelor's in
communications and public
relations, and is the daughter
of Allen and Lynne Despain of
Plant City.

Florrie Orem Todd
I saw Florrie Orem Todd at
the Dec. 15 Plant City Photo
Archives reception introduc-
ing new director Jerry
Thomas, who is happily un-
retired now and looking
forward to his new job.
Florrie worked for Peninsu-
lar Telephone Co. for 35 years,
and had a good time pointing
out all her friends and fellow
employees in a photo blowup
of the 1953 Christmas party at
the company.

Betty Barker Watkins has
done a tremendous job of
helping the archives secure
photos. Betty spent her
birthday and Christmas in the
hospital. We wish her a
speedy recovery, and I
understand she is doing well
and should be home after
Christmas.

'Porkers' take 1st place
Our own Plant City Porkers
team took first place in the
professional division at the
Plant City Pig Jam last month,
beating out 43 professional
teams, many with factory
sponsorship. Some of the
teams also came from as far
away as Kansas and Texas.
Congratulations!
Team captain Todd Shuff
and team members Casey
Hardee, Kyle Robinson and
Steve Shouse will take their
talents to the upcoming
Lakeland Pig Jam in 2006.
Helping the team bring home
the bacon, or trophy, were
J.D. Reece and Kenny Philip-
son.

Lazy Creek Farms
is anything but
It may be called Lazy Creek
Farms, but there's nothing
lazy or creaky about straw-
berry grower Jeff Joyce.
He, along with farm owner
Kimball Wetherington, earned
the bragging rights for picking

the first flat of Florida berries
Nov. 15. Gulf Coast Produce is
the proud shipper for Lazy
Creek. For those of you who
don't know Jeff and brother
Randy, they are old Plant City
boys born with a double dose
of humor.
Some of you might remem-
ber I mentioned the boys in
an earlier column, saying they
were twins. Randy said it with
such a straight face, too. Of
course, they are not.

Kiwanis pass out gifts at
Steppin' Stone Farm
Ken Hawthorne, Robert
Brown and Anna Reitz of the
Plant City Kiwanis Club
passed out Christmas gifts at
the Steppin' Stone Farm just
before the holiday.
Anna reports that a total of
. 3,357 gifts were given out this
year, including toys to
elementary schools, the Head
Start Center in Bealsville,
South Florida Baptist
Hospital, The Spring and the
United Food Bank. We are
blessed to have so many
generous-of-heart service
clubs.

a three-year term.
The seventh Relay For Life held at
the Plant City High School stadium
April 15-16 collected a record $217,500
in a fundraising effort to help find the
cure for cancer. That total is $70,000
higher than the record amount col-
lected during the 2004 event. Jodi
Smith, the chairwoman of the 2005
effort, said 79 teams participated in
making the effort such a great success.
The Plant City High School girls'
tennis team won its district champion-
ship, defeating Lakeland 13-12 in a
tournament at the University of South
Florida.
Durant tennis star Alyssa Young
won two three-set matches at the dis-
trict tournament, defeating Annika
Johansson of Gaither to advance to the
district championship match. She then
defeated Lakeland's Aubrey Campbell
to earn a berth in the state champion-
ship in Orlando where she lost to
Cypress Creek's Veronica Figueroa.
May
+ Turkey Creek First Baptist Church
celebrated its 130 year, remembering
the church's ministers, from the first -
the Rev. Thomas H. Jaudon to the
present day pastor, the Rev. David
Jones. From a wilderness background
to its multiple-building campus, full
day care service and programs for all
ages, the church expects to continue
its expansion in order to meet the ris-
ing population in that area.
The city code enforcement rules
concerning the removal of inoperable
vehicles on private property was put
into practice when an abandoned
vehicle in the 1100 block of Ball Street
was towed from the property by order
of the city commission. This was the
first time such action was taken in
Plant City.

"We've definitely shifted from a get-by to a first-class mentality," said Plant City Police Chief Bill McDaniel about the
department's move to the new 68,000-square-foot police headquarters.

Members of the Plant City Photo
Archives advisory board, including
founder Ed Verner, executive director
Gil Gott, Stanley Kolker and Dr. Hal
Brewer, announced plans to present
an idea for a Veterans Memorial to be
built and erected in Plant City to honor
local members of the armed services,
past and present. In November, the
city commission approved the group's

request to place the memorial in the
City Hall Medallion Traffic Circle, but
reserved the right to approve or reject
the sculpture's design.
Hopewell Baptist Church, first
housed in a 10-foot-by-12-foot cabin,
with two doors, to allow men and
women to be seated separately, cele-
brated its 132 year.

Raiders Find Glint Of Cheer In Winless Holiday Hoops Experience

COUGARS BEGIN PLAY
THIS WEEK
By DAREK SHARP
dsharp@mediageneral.com
An 0-3 stint at a holiday
tournament in Auburndale
does not sound like a cheery
way to spend Christmas vaca-
tion. For the Plant City boys
basketball team, the experi-
ence was not nearly as bad as
it sounds.

In fact, the team could have
easily gone 3-0, and the Raid-
ers displayed improvement,
which it hopes continues in
New Port Richey this week at
another event.
"I have no qualms with how
we played. I thought we played
well enough to win all three
games," said Raiders head
coach Gary Meyer after his
club fell by a grand total of
three points in Auburndale.
The "topper" was Plant
City's final game Friday after-

noon against a pretty good
Carol City team from Miami.
Plant City led by three with 30
seconds to go, but lost to the
Chiefs on a jumpshot at the
buzzer.
Before that, Winter Haven
beat the Raiders by four
points, and Haines City won
by two in a game where the
Raiders barely missed a late
shot that would have won the
game.
"We've got to get out of the
mode of having such bad luck,

but the thing about this team
is they continue to come
back," Meyer said. "They show
up at practice Monday ready
to go, ready to work."
Plant City was scheduled to
open up Wednesday after-
noon against Brooksville
Central in the first round of
the Rotary Ram Classic at
Ridgewood High School. If the
Raiders won, they play today
at 5:30 p.m. against the Dune-
din-Pompano Beach winner.
The finals are Friday at 7:15.
The teams on the other half of
the bracket are the host Rams,
Seminole, Tarpon Springs and
Bloomingdale.
Of the three losses in
Auburndale, where 31 games
(boys and girls combined)
were played as part of the
Tracy McGrady Christmas
Shootout, Plant City was most
impressive in the finale against
Carol City. The Chiefs had a
front line of players that stood
6-4, 6-5 and 6-7. With no one
over 6-foot-2, Plant City still
played impressive, tough
defense.
"CodyElliott-he's 6-1 -he's

derson, he's maybe 6 feet and
he's against a 6-4, and Jeff

Plant City's biggest bugaboo
was poor free-throw shooting.
For example, the Raiders hit
just seven of 15 in the fourth
quarter against Carol City.
Twice in the final half-minute
the Raiders failed to hit the
front end of a one-and-one.

DECEMBER 29, 2005 THE COURIER *17

IN THE SPIRIT

"In the Spirit," is a new feature highlighting
religious leaders. Each week, The Courier will
profile someone from the major religious
institutions in the area.

The Rev. Earl

Smith

Senior Pastor,

First United

Methodist

Church
Q: How long have you been in the
Plant City area?
A: I've been here five months. We
came July 1 from Punta Gorda. The
church there had about $800,000 in
damages from Hurricane Charley.
Q: How old are you, and where were
you raised?
A: I was born in 1952, and raised in
Ohio the Columbus area. We moved
to Florida in 1994.
Q: What are two things about Plant
City that float your boat?
A: The depth of the people here. I
mean that in two ways. There's a lot of
heritage here in town, families that go
back four or five generations. They've
built on that historical strength. Also,
there are a lot of great reflective.
thinkers in town. There's a good sense
of people wanting this community to
be strong.
Q: What is your favorite hymn?
A: "Here I am, Lord." The call to
discipleship.
Q: Do you know any good preacher
jokes?
A: Impromptu humor works best for
me. I don't tend to remember jokes.
Sunday the children sang during the
offertory. The ushers were standing in
the back and the song ended. They
were so engrossed they never took up
the offering. I said, "Did you guys
forget to take up the offering?" The
congregation just roared.
Q: If someone gave you $100,000
(no strings attached), what would you
do with it?
A: Probably promote the local
congregation. I believe today's
evangelism is going to occur by first
drawing people to the church. If you

draw them to the family of faith, then
they'll fall in love with Jesus.
Q: Is there a television show you try
not to miss?
A: I like the "Law & Order" type
shows. There's a lot of thinking
involved. I like to figure out the plot.
The more flashy shows don't interest
me. I like who-done-it.
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: Hiking and camping. Down here
it's a little hard. Where do you put up
a tent when its 180 degrees? Fishing. I
had three boats in Punta Gorda, but
am now moving towards freshwater.
We love to kayak.
Q: Apart from the Bible, what book
has influenced you the most in the
past year?
A: Probably Rick Warren's "Purpose
Driven Life." One of those faith "uh-
huh" moments. What is the local
church here for? It's a good question.
I've also been reading a lot of Max
Lucado.
Q: What is your purpose here?
A: To help draw this church into an
outreach ministry to the community.
One is to disciple the people in'the
pews, walking daily with Jesus. Then,
open ourselves up to being an invita-
tional church, a church of hospitality.
Q: Share something that makes you
proud of your wife.
A: I've been married to Peggy
(Welch) since 1973. She's a strong
independent, thinking woman who
has enhanced my ministry. She's been
a special education teacher since 1973
and she hasn't burned out.
Q: What is your favorite place to
eat?
A: Sonny's (Real Pit Bar-B-Q). But
that's because I haven't been to
Grandpa Johnson's Barbecue or
Woody's yet. We haven't really hit the
spots here in town.
Q: What is the best Christmas
present you ever gave?
A: Giving my children a faith walk,
not just a church-going experience.
Q: How many children do you have?
A: Three. One is 25 and the twins
are 23. The 25-year-old is in the U.S.
Air Force and one 23-year-old is
serving a church in Cocoa as music
director. My daughter is still in college
in Ohio.

DEREK MAUL/Photo
A perfect lunch for The Rev. Earl Smith senior pastor at First United Methodist
Church would probably be at the White House with President Bush eating
barbecue from Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q.

Q: If there's one New Year's resolu-
tion you know you could keep, what
would it be?
A: Get exercising real well! But
where can you find two hours? By the
time you get your head on and
schedule it and get changed then
shower up, it's taken two hours.
Q: If you could have lunch with a
celebrity, who would you choose?
A: I'm thinking President Bush.
Because he's a man who has grown up
in a similar tradition to mine. I'd like
to get a good sense of where he's
really coming from, his desire to
protect America the way he's doing it.
Really study his heart.

Q: What is something you have
learned recently?
A: God gives us spiritual gifts at any
time of our life when he wants us to
do something specific. The Lord
prepared me specifically for this
ministry. He enhanced my Ability to
preach and my teaching from what it
had been four years ago. I want to
help people find their spiritual gifts.

GOLFER

Continued From Page 1
Cole as a little guy.
Cole's mother and his swing coach,
Walter Burrell of Tampa's Dent Brad-
shaw School of Golf, were at the golf
course watching Cole as he banged
balls off the practice tee.
Cole, who not so long ago intro-
duced himself as Tiger Woods, has
Tiger on the brain. He wears. Nike
clothes, which is Tiger's brand. He has
the Nike swoosh on his socks. He hits
Nike golf balls and told me he would
like to be the youngest golfer to ever
sign a Nike contract.
Since my amateur status remains
intact, should I play Cole on the course
and get skunked, being beaten by an

aspiring golf professional should ease
some of the pain. But, believe me, this
miniature Sam Snead has taken to the
game like a natural; which, of course, is
what he is.
"At Cole's age you can't spend much
time on fundamentals or technique,"
Burrell said. "Most kids his age can't
stand still long enough to hit the ball.
Cole loves to swing the club and get
the ball on target. He will practice for
hours on end and come back for
more."
While Cole loves golf, his 6-year-old
brother, Jacob, is into soccer. That
makes Tiffany a soccer and a golf
mom. Both sports fit neatly into her

schedule, she said.
"I tried to get both of them involved
in soccer," she said. "Jacob enjoys the
game. He plays in the YMCA soccer
league. But Cole is a one-day soccer
dropout."
Tiffany said Cole tried out for soccer
earlier this year, after already becom-
ing hooked on golf.
"He ran around the soccer field dur-
ing their first practice for about an
hour and came off the field in a sweat.
He told me right then that he wanted
to concentrate all his efforts on golf,"
Cole's mother said.
It was golf professional Rick Brad-
shaw who labeled young Cole the best

golfer of his age in the country. Unfor-
tunately, because there is no
competitive play for golfers that young,
we will never know. Burrell, who works
for Bradshaw, said he might be able to
find a few other phenoms like Cole in
the area and put them in a junior-jun-
ior golf tournament.
All right then. I'm ready. Bring 'em
on.

people. Have a suggestion for the col-
umn? Call reporter George Newman
