By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — New educators will soon zip around Antioch and Bob Sikes Elementary Schools’ hallways. But these run on batteries. ‘AWESOME ROBOTS’ BOLT, Antioch’s robot, was ac quired earlier this year through a Department of Defense Education Activity grant, third-grade gifted inclusion teacher Laura Pink said. The almost 5-foot-tall ma chine, which can move forward and backward, laugh and say “hello” and “thank you,” is valued at $6,999, according to the manu facturer’s website. “Antioch is one of the ve Oka loosa elementary schools to have the PITSCO labs that received these awesome robots for their school to incorporate into their curriculum,” Pink stated in an email. PITSCO, a national company that develops science, technolo gy, engineering and mathematics curricula and teaching materials, also has labs in Eglin, Florosa, Bluewater and Mary Esther el ementary schools. 39th Year, Number 76 SEPTEMBER 20-23, 2014 www.crestviewbulletin.com GOV ERER N MEME N TT A2 MM ILI TT A RR Y, A2 BB USIN EE SS, A4 S PP O RTRT S, A11 Concert to commemorate WWI, WWII tonight Crestview resident qualies for mayoral race New diner brings blue plate specials to Holt Baker volleyball coach: Wins prove Gators ‘stay focused’ 50 Cents Military . . . . . . .......... The disorder itself — which is present in one of 2,000 female births, according to the society’s website — typically isn’t lifethreatening, but complications can be. Madison was just 9 days old when she received open-heart surgery in Atlanta, Ashley said. Madison, at 4, still struggles, but her mother is optimistic. “She has done pretty well so far,” Ashley said. The family spreads aware ness by wearing Turner syn drome T-shirts and supporting Turner Syndrome Family Fun Day, set for Sept. 27 at Old Span ish Trail Park. The event will feature chil dren’s bounce houses, a video game truck, face painting and live music. Wrist bands, lunch plates and snacks will be sold for donations. In addition, residents dealing with the disorder will be on hand to share insight, Ashley said. Most of the event’s proceeds will assist with Madison’s medi cal expenses. Twenty-ve per cent will benet the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States, Ashley said. In addition to weekly physical and occupational therapy ses sions, Madison soon will need another open-heart surgery, along with a neck procedure, Ashley said. Having Madison in her life has given Ashley purpose in spreading awareness for Turn er syndrome, she said. “I never knew what my call ing was until I had her,” she said. The Baxley family — bottom row, Ally, 7, Madison, 4, and top row, Lilly, 1, and Ashley and Matthew — is spreading awareness about Turner syndrome with a Sept. 27 Family Fun Day. April Linton, a cosmetologist at the Hello Beautiful salon, found a blemish about the size of a pen cil eraser on the Baker School teacher’s head last month. After Linton showed Black a cell phone photo of it, the 33year teaching veteran made an appointment with her derma tologist, Dr. Charles Trapp, who removed the cancerous spot and surrounding skin. Checking customers’ heads for irregularities should be stan dard professional practice at any salon, Linton said. “I always look,” Linton said. “I’ve found things before be cause you can’t see the back of your neck or behind your ears or on top of your head. “They’re not just our clients, they’ve become our friends. Noti fying them is just the right thing to do if you nd something.” EAR LL Y DETECTION Black, who has a family and personal history of skin cancer, said the cancer didn’t have time to get worse. “They got it very early, so I didn’t have to go through chemo,” she said. “There was no invasion of my lymph nodes. But I had 10 stitches on my head because (Dr. Trapp) cut out a quarter-size spot.” Black, in turn, paid Linton’s deed forward by including dis cussion of cancer in her high school science classroom. “I teach anatomy, and we go over all that,” she said. “Some kids are cautious, but I have seniors, and come prom time, they’re tanning-bedding like crazy.” Black, who brought Linton a oral bouquet in appreciation for her attentiveness, said the cos metologist probably saved her life. “I had some people praying for me,” Black said. “They said God knew it (the cancer) was there, and he used April to nd it.” SPecia ECIA L toTO tT H e E N ews EWS BULLetin ETIN Baker School teacher Tami Black presents cosmetologist April Linton a bouquet as a “thank you” for nding a cancerous spot on her head. Edwards, a Crestview representative on the Okaloosa Walton Transportation Planning Organization’s Citizens Advisory Council, long has advocated for a bypass around Crestview to alleviate some State Road 85 traf c. “I will work on getting a bypass around the city of Crestview even if I have to walk to Tallahassee and talk to the representatives and the governor,” he said in March 2013. Edwards also strongly supports improving downtown parking and stopping what he calls “wasteful spending that does not bene t the people of Crestview.” One of his biggest goals is boosting residents’ interest in city government. “When 500 people can elect a city councilman and there’s 26,000 people here, we need to have more participation,” he said. He has owned Edwards Machine Shop for more than 20 years, is a four-year Navy veteran and is retired from civil service at Eglin Air Force Base. He regularly attends City Council meetings and frequently comments on current issues during citizen comment periods. Edwards unsuccessfully campaigned last year to unseat former City Councilman Ben Iannucci III. Joe Blocker won the Precinct 1 position. WWW.CRESTVIEWBULLETIN.COM Page A2 Resident quali es for mayoral race By BRIAN HUGHES Arts Editor brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Tonight’s opening of the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 2014-15 season brings a tribute to the “greatest generation” in images and music. “Glory and Remembrance” pays homage to those on the front lines and on the home front as Westwater Arts brings its nationally acclaimed “photo-choreography” to the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. As the NFSO observes the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I and the upcoming 70th anniversary of the close of World War II, the concert melds historic photos with the symphony’s selections. “Patrons will experience a totally unique integration of images and music honoring the men and women who won history’s most pivotal victory,” NFSO conductor Jeffrey Rink said. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Symphony No. 5” opens the program. The English composer created the work between 1938 and 1943 as the Luftwaffe battled the Royal Air Force in southern England skies. The NFSO then steps back to World War I, with Westwater’s imagery of The Great War joining Aaron Copland’s poignant “Quiet City” in a performance called “No Man’s Land.” The evening concludes with guest artist and Israeli pianist Yevgeny Yontov, 2013 Wideman International Piano Competition gold medalist, performing Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4.” The concert, which is sponsored by physicians of the Okaloosa County Medical Society, marks the start of “A Musical Voyage,” a season reecting the broad spectrum of artists, events and music from around the globe. Together, they “help the orchestra share the beauty of live classical music with today’s more diverse and visually oriented audiences,” Rink said. C OMMUNITY www.crestviewbulletin.com September 20-23, 2014 Page A3 In 311 A.D., Constantine the Great legalized Christianity. Christians no longer had to hide their faith or fear dying. Because Constantine made Christianity the empire’s ofcial religion, everyone wanted to be a Christian so they would be in the emperor’s good graces. Unfortunately, church leaders could not keep up with the kind of deep, thorough teaching and indoctrination necessary to erase pagan practices so people would understand and live Christ’s faith. As a result, pagan practices inltrated church life. People joined a church simply because doing so was politically correct. There was no full understanding of the kind of sacricial or generous life called for by Jesus. That reminds me of a story: One day, a young, rich, respectable man approached Jesus. It seems as though he wanted to boast about all his good deeds and pious behavior, and be recognized for all the fantastic ways he had kept all aspects of Jewish law. Surely that would be worthy of praise from this great rabbi. Jesus told this young man that he had done pretty well. Jesus also knew what was in the man’s heart. Jesus said there was only one thing left for the young man to do: sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor. Then he could follow Jesus. The man went away sad because he had many possessions. He could not give them up. There would be nothing left for him. Jesus knew what was in the young man’s heart, and how painful his words would be to the young man. But Jesus spoke the words anyway. And he did it in love. Jesus knows we want to give ourselves to him, but there often is something that prevents us from doing so. What do you need to give up to make Jesus rst in your life? Where is your heart? Are you part of a church because it is the proper or popular thing to do, or because the Lord has transformed your heart? The Rev. Mark Broadhead is Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Crestview’s pastor. Its 250 sewing machines had been humming for several days, providing Depression-era employment for local families. SEPT. 22, 1968: Crestview High School is dedicated at its present location on North Ferdon Boulevard. CHS moved from today’s Northwood Arts and Science Academy and Richbourg E.S.E. School campuses. SEPT. 23, 1921: Convicted murderers Putnam Ponsell and Jacob B. Martin are the last two felons publicly executed in Okaloosa County. They were hanged outside the county courthouse. Historians Betty Curenton and Claudia Patten described in “Crestview: The Forkland” a “festive air to the proceedings,” saying boys hawked peanuts and cold water and “families came from all the surrounding states bringing their picnic lunches.” The felons were executed for murdering John F. Tuggle, possibly a Chipley resident, according to witness Myrtle (Hart) Long Mead, as quoted in The Okaloosa News-Journal. Groups sang for the men before they were hanged, and preachers prayed for them, according to the newspaper. People reacted differently when the gallows trap door opened and the men dropped to their death, “some fainting, some of them vomiting, some cursing, some crying and some praying.” Visit the Baker Block Museum, at the corner of Highway 189 and State Road 4, Baker, or call 537-5714 to learn more about local history. By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com HOLT — Soon, residents can enjoy another, more local option for down home cooking. Holt’s Diner, off U.S. Highway 90 beside the Holt post of ce, is undergoing renovations before it opens Sept. 29. When it does, the restaurant will offer something the community needs, manager Michelle Dzwonkowski said. “The home-style country cooking is in high demand here, and we want to please,” she said. In addition to serving dine-in blue plate specials — including meatloaf, fried pork chops and fried sh — the diner will offer deli meats and cheeses, homemade soups, fresh baked breads and casseroles to go. “I know working people don’t always want to go out and eat,” Dzwonkowski said. “If they want to grab a casserole, a sandwich or a meal to go … they can call it in and we will have it ready.” The menu eventually will include even more items, she said. ‘IT’S WHAT’S NECESSARY’ Since renovations began, residents have stopped by and asked about the activity, Dzwonkowski said. “People would stop by, before we even announced anything … they would say they sure hoped it would be a restaurant, because Holt needs a restaurant,” she said. “It’s what’s necessary for this community.” Austin Valani, Dzwonkowski’s business partner and store manager for neighboring Brown’s Grocery, said he noticed a market for such a restaurant after seeing Brown’s daily business. The diner also will bene t those passing through Holt, Valani said. “I’ve had people come off (Interstate) 10 and ask me if we had a place where they could just sit and eat,” Valani said. Once it’s open, he plans to suggest Holt’s Diner, whose hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. “I think this is going to be a good thing (for the community),” he said. But the Bullpups will have to raise more than $446.18 for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis research if they want to compete with Southside. Each Southside class recently learned about ALS, the neurodegenerative disease also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. “We think it’s very important for us to have service projects at the school,” Southside principal Debra Haan said. After each lesson, rstgrade teacher Candis Sharon asked her students to reect on what they learned. “The next day, we would discuss, ‘What if this was you?’ ” she said. “Would you want others to do this (fundraising) for you?” The lesson culminated Wednesday as rst-graders splashed Sharon and physical education coach Kassy Johnson with ice-cold water. Sharon’s 13 students collected $78, more than any other Southside class, she said. Pouring the water on Sharon and Johnson was the students’ reward. “It was an extra incentive that she gave to her students,” Haan said. “She stepped up.” The fundraiser began two weeks ago, and it didn’t take long for Sharon to realize her students would meet their goal. “It was amazing; every time I counted the (dollar) bills, I would just get chillier and chillier,” she said. The children’s efforts to aid ALS research were impressive, Johnson said. “These kids worked really hard,” she said. “We are a small school and we raised a lot of money.” [\ ‡ V8 ]P P]\HA Z8T

Page A11 www.crestviewbulletin.com September 20-23, 2014 S PORTS By DEVIN GOLDEN 315-4476 | @DGoldnwfdn dgolden@nwfdailynews.com FREEPORT — Ashley Black and Taylor Brunson don’t care that they and their Baker volleyball teammates, at one point this season, won 20 of 21 sets. They have tunnel vision on each match’s result — and especially Tuesday’s meeting with Freeport. It’s a match Baker players highlight on the schedule, because Tuesday’s 25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 25-13 win against Freeport and its lively home crowd af rms that Baker is still the team to beat in District 3-A. “On the calendar we plan, ‘Win at Freeport,’” said Brunson, who led all players with 26 assists. “I think they’re the toughest team in our district.” Baker (7-0, 4-0), trying for a 12th straight district championship and a state title after last year’s runners-up ending, entered the match against Freeport (7-2, 3-1) with sweeps in all of its rst six contests except a four-set win against district foe Jay. While winning 18 of 19 sets isn’t the rst thing Baker coach Tommiko Parks looks at, it’s a telling statistic of her team’s refusal to lose its edge. “It means we’re focused for the most part, and we stay focused throughout the match,” she said. The Gators appeared headed to another straight-set win when Brittany Brunson’s ace ended the second set and put Freeport, the team Baker defeated in last year’s district championship match, in a must-win spot. “We couldn’t get anything going,” Freeport coach Tina Knight said, “and that was the problem.” At least until the third set. Freeport used the momentum swing of a lengthy rally, breaking a 13-13 tie with one of Mary Kate Myrick’s 10 kills, and a rejuvenated crowd as Mady Jones’ kill and ace in the nal two points gave the Bulldogs the set. Laura Ham led Freeport with 14 digs, Devany Beard had four blocks and Jones added 11 assists and four aces. “I think the fans were getting in our girls’ heads and one mistake led to another,” said Black, who ended with seven kills and six aces. Baker quieted the crowd in the nal set – something Black said the Gators speci cally set out to do – with six straight points, including three straight aces from Taylor Brunson, and a 17-9 lead that was never in doubt the rest of the match. Kelsee McGraw had 12 kills, but libero Lena Daoud’s matchhigh 30 digs impressed Parks the most and was evidence her team shined defensively against Freeport’s attacking mentality. “When you play teams like Freeport,” she said, “it’s important to be in spots we need to be in to keep the ball off the oor.” By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com FORT WALTON BEACH — Crestview High School volleyball Coach Kathy Combest sees plenty of improvement areas, but she nds no fault with how the Bulldogs ght back. “We just have to learn to quit making crucial errors,” she said. “We have to play harder at the net and be more aggressive on offense. We’ve got to stop trying to do things we can’t do.” Trailing Fort Walton Beach 75, things looked bleak for Crestview High School’s volleyball team on Tuesday. The Bulldogs, who had already lost the rst two sets to the Vikings, were in ght mode. Crestview did rally back to take the third and fourth sets. But in the end, the Bulldogs fell short. Fort Walton Beach held off the hard-charging Crestview team to take the District 1-7A contest 3-2 by scores of 25-10, 25-21, 20-25, 19-25 and 16-14. “They could have let down any of those games,” Combest said. “We were two games down and had to win three games in a row. That usually doesn’t happen in volleyball.” Fort Walton Beach broke open the rst set with a 10-0 run after the teams were tied 4-4. A Kiva Malone kill started the run, and with Madison Friedman serving, the Vikings pulled away to the double-digit lead. The Bulldogs (5-6, 0-3) never challenged in the rst set. Crestview showed signs of life in the second set as the Bulldogs pressured the Vikings throughout the set. Fort Walton Beach led 15-14 when a Pam George kill pulled the Bulldogs even at 15-15 and gave Crestview the serve. The Bulldogs ran off another four points with Macie Adams in serve to take a 19-15 lead. Friedman led the Vikings back as Fort Walton Beach erased the de cit and moved in front 20-19. Kara Fisher scored twice down the stretch for the Vikings as they pulled away to take the set and were on the verge of the win. But Crestview wasn’t nished. Rather than rolling over and going down quietly, the Bulldogs came roaring back. Kierra Potts led the charge with four of her team-leading 17 kills in the set. Potts had plenty of help though as Nichole LeFevre, Molly Kitchen and Cailey Ness all made big plays in the set. Crestview took the lead in the set at 10-9 and pulled away to take the win. The Bulldogs tied the match with a fourth set win. A Viking serving error to open the set gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. With LeFevre in serve Crestview scored seven more answered points. Potts helped the effort with a kill. George added a block and LeFevre had three aces in the run. Fort Walton Beach was able to close to the Bulldog lead to 10-8. But a pair of kills by Ness pushed the Crestview lead back to 12-8 as the Bulldogs pulled away to take the set. The nal set went back and forth. Fort Walton Beach led 11-6 when Potts sparked a nal Bulldog run. Crestview was able to tie the set at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14, but the Bulldogs were never able to wrestle the lead away from the Vikings. Potts had eight blocks to go with her 17 kills. Ness had 11 kills and 11 blocks. LeFevre had seven kills, four aces, four blocks and four assists. Marisa Rogers led the Bulldogs with 17 assists to go along with seven kills, three aces and two digs. Adams had 16 digs. Kitchen pitched in 15 assists, two blocks and four kills. LAURA PINK | Special to the News Bulletin Coach: Wins prove Gators never lose their edge By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Coming off a tough ve-set loss to Fort Walton Beach on Tuesday, Crestview High School’s volleyball team needed a boost in the way of a win. The Bulldogs got it with a straight-set win over West Florida Tech. Scores were 25-21, 25-8 and 25-16. It was important for the Bulldogs to beat the Jaguars, senior Nichole LeFevre said. “It was de nitely a good builder-upper again, just playing our game, just running the basics and getting our game back together,” she said. “It (the match with Fort Walton Beach) was a very tough loss. Both teams played amazing Tuesday. “Winning this game was a big boost for us really. It was a con dence builder.” Crestview (6-6) never trailed in the rst two sets. Kierra Potts helped propel the Bulldogs to an early 6-0 lead in the rst set with four of her team-high 12 kills in the match’s opening points. West Florida took advantage of an unforced Bulldog error for its rst point of the night. It was 6-2 in favor of Crestview before back-to-back kills from Potts and Pam George pushed the Bulldog lead to 8-2. Crestview’s biggest lead in the set was 19-11 before the Jaguars mounted a comeback. A 106 West Florida run made things interesting, but it wasn’t enough to challenge the Bulldogs in the set. Crestview dominated the second set, jumping in front 7-3 and never looking back. Cailey Ness had ve kills and a block to power the Bulldog attack. Molly Kitchen added a pair of kills and Meghan Dietz came up with a couple of aces in the set. The Jaguars came out ghting in the third set and led 15-11 when a kill by Potts swung the momentum back in Crestview’s favor and the Bulldogs went on a 14-1 run to close out the match. The season is a work in progress, Bulldog Coach Kathy Combest said. “We had to come home and tweak some things and just get everything back to the way it’s supposed to be,” she said. “This helps us learn more every game what we can do as a team.” ROBOTS from page A1 Stanhill continued down the road until he saw a Florida Highway Patrol trooper backing out of his yard. Stanhill stopped the trooper and said he thought he hit something. The two went back to the area to search and a second trooper joined them, but they didn’t nd anything, Brown said. Later, police found Valerie in a ditch along Antioch Road on the south side of the overpass. Sacred Heart Hospital staffers in Pensacola pronounced Valerie dead at 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Now, purple ribbons adorn mailboxes, utility poles, basketball goals and street signs throughout the Whitehurst Lane neighborhood near Antioch Elementary School. And the community is in shock. “She’s just a great kid,” CHS Principal Dexter Day said. “One of our honor students.” “I will think about her when I jog from here on,” Scott Howard said on the News Bulletin’s Facebook page. “So sad for someone so young losing their life ... prayers for the parents and siblings,” Janet Williams said. “Such a devastatingly sad situation. My prayers for her family,” Kimberly Moreno said. The Crestview Police traf c investigation is ongoing under Lt. Jamie Grant’s command. No further information is available at this time. www.crestviewbulletin.com By BRIAN HUGHES Arts Editor brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Dr. Wanda Batson said the decision to dance during Covenant Hospice’s Oct. 4 Blue Jean Ball came easy. Fred Astaire Dance Studio owner David Coln just asked her. “My friend, David, asked me if I’d be willing to help out with the hospice fundraiser,” Batson said. “My answer was, ‘Of course.’” Initially, she thought he meant nancial assistance or volunteering. When Coln said, “Oh, by the way…,” she realized he meant being one of four sponsored, celebrity dancers. Now, she’s practicing for the big night. DANCING STAR With a recording of Frank Sinatra crooning “Nice and Easy,” Coln whirled her around his dance studio on Wednesday as they perfected their routine. Batson joins Stephanie Overstreet, Joel Davis and Dr. Khalid Moussa, who with their Fred Astaire professional partners are learning new dance steps — or how to dance at all — while raising money for Covenant. Judges will critique their dancing skill, the audience’s enthusiasm and how much money they raise. Covenant organizers have set a $12,000 target for this year’s Dancing with the Crestview Stars segment, a $2,000 increase from last year’s donations. “I’ll be harassing loved ones — with love,” Batson said of her fundraising technique. She also plans to solicit donations through her Facebook page and through an online donation site she has yet to set up. A SERIOUS CAUSE Though she jokes about how Coln “voluntold” her to join the effort, her support for Covenant Hospice — which provides free endof-life care for needy patients — is serious. “Every family I know has been affected by cancer, so I’ll just ask them for money,” Batson said. She believes in Covenant Hospice’s service to terminally ill patients and families trying to cope with a loved one’s illness and impending death. “If you emotionally can’t be there for support, hospice is,” Batson said. “It’s a whole level of care you have to have.
