Rick Scott’s Thurs day visit to the Hub City is an acknowledgement of North Oka loosa County’s signicance. “People at state level are starting to see the importance of Crestview and the north county area and recognize our economic diversity and growth up here,” Cadle said. A number of supporters wel comed the governor when his “Let’s keep working” campaign bus stopped at Lee Buick GMC. Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, State Attorney Pam Bondi, and State Rep. Doug Broxson joined him. Scott, Lopez-Cantera and Bon di’s remarks emphasized the im provements to Florida’s economy and the increase in jobs under Scott’s leadership. They contrast ed current unemployment statis tics with those during the national recession and administration of Scott’s predecessor and campaign opponent, Charlie Crist. Unemployment fell from 11.1 percent during Crist’s administra tion to 6.2 percent, Bondi said. Local Democratic Party mem bers who planned to protest Scott’s visit canceled their appear ance to recognize the national day of remembrance for the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The modest turnout was a mixture of enthusi astic supporters, North Okaloosa Republican Club members, deal ership workers and car shoppers. Riverside Elementary School second-grader Destin Hubbard was among them, and said his classmates would be jealous of him when they learn he got his picture taken with the governor. “He’s kind of funny,” Destin said. “I liked him.” Scott’s visit to Crestview fol lowed a Patriot Day morning ceremony in Fort Walton Beach, where he rang the rst strike on a bell cast Wednesday for a war veterans memorial. Drew, her 12-year-old son, is beginning rehabilitation after a boat hit and critically injured him on June 28. Soon after the incident, a number of businesses displayed #prayfordrew signs and residents wore #prayfordrew T-shirts and wrist bands to show support. Thursday morning, family members said, they started to see answers to those prayers when an ambulance transported Drew from Sacred Heart Hospital to Atlanta, where he will recover. “He is so happy and excited to be here,” Wendy stated in a Facebook message. “He never complained one time on the vehour trip.” Wendy said her son will undergo physical and occupational therapy, and physicans will monitor his renal function and blood pressure. She uses social media to update friends and family members on Drew’s progress. Her posts appear regularly on the Prayers for Drew and Emmanuel Baptist Church Facebook pages. “We are here! Got Drew in his room all checked out, he’s happy excited and hungry!! Eating good not getting sick! Praise The Lord!” Wendy stated. Meanwhile, the community’s support for Drew’s family — including his father, Trey, and sister, Savannah — hasn’t wavered. Proceeds from a 5K run/walk — scheduled for Sept. 20 at Davidson Middle School — will help cover his medical bills. The event starts with 7 a.m. registration. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. Entry fees are $20 per person for the 5K and $10 for the 1-mile fun run for kids age 12 and younger. Supporters can pick up registration packets 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at the Davidson gym, 6261 Old Bethel Road. They can make checks payable to The Drew Bareeld Donation Account and mail them to: 2260 S. Ferdon Blvd. #20, Crestview, FL 32536, Attention #RunforDrew. No time or score will be kept on the kids’ run. Walkers, strollers and baby joggers are welcome to participate. W en EN DY an AN D Drew DREW Bare ARE F ie IE LD Mayor: Scott’s campaign stop reects North Okaloosa’s increasing importance By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Crestview High School and Shoal River Middle School students noticed a familiar furry face on campus this week. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Ofce Deputy Mark Nucci and his K-9 partner Kilo show up unexpectedly at area schools during the academic year. A number of students take the duo’s visits in stride. “I think it’s pretty awesome,” junior Dakota Wells said. “I think it keeps the school safer.” While some students are afraid of dogs, Nucci said Kilo, a yellow Labrador, is less intimidating than German shepherds. “Most of the time, the kids just want to pet him,” he said. “He’s very calm.”DD RUG DD ETERRENT The duo’s biggest task is deterring illegal drug use, Nucci said. Kilo is trained to alert upon scenting four base substances and the drugs derived from them. ‘The biggest category falls under meth and the other drugs that they make out of it,” Nucci said. During their patrol with the school’s resource ofcer and administrators, the unit visits classrooms, cars in the parking lot and lockers. “It’s a mix of random and specic,” Crestview High dean of students Ben Kimbrough said. “Sometimes, we get tips on certain students but most of the time it’s pretty random.” KI LL O SEEKS As Joiner, Kimbrough, Nucci and Kilo enter Cari Ruschmeier’s English class, Joiner apologizes for the intrusion. He instructs students to place their belongings on the oor, keep their hands on their desks, and above all, “Please don’t pet the dog. He’s working. Let him do his job.” Kilo, responding to Nucci’s “seek” commands, trots up and down rows of desks, and pauses now and then to quickly sniff a backpack. “What he was nding was new odors,” Nucci said of the pauses. “All those odors were animal smells. The kids probably have pets at home.” No illicit substances were found at Crestview High that morning, and Nucci said that’s what he and Kilo like. It’s also what administrators like. “We want K-9s here at Crestview High School,” Principal Dexter Day said. “They’re a part of our school. They keep our school safe.” TOP DOG ON CAMPUS Sheriff’s Ofce K-9 unit patrols classrooms, targets drugs Community . . . . . ........ A2 Government . . . . ....... A3 Education . . . . . ......... C OMMUNITY www.crestviewbulletin.com September 13-16, 2014 By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Artist Nicole Weaver is the winner of the News Bulletin’s Redesign the Rack contest. The newspaper’s management plans to use her design, with a few suggested revisions, on the rack outside the Bulletin’s 638 N. Ferdon Blvd. of ce. Weaver also wins a $100 check. Weaver, who says her seven children inspire her colored abstracts, created themes that re ect North Okaloosa County for her submission. News Bulletin staffers selected the artist’s design from two other nalists’ submissions. All the nalists’ submissions were impressive, but when the time came to choose the rstplace recipient, the decision was clear, Editor Thomas Boni said. “Nicole’s attention to detail, her submission’s re ection of North Okaloosa culture and values and her artistic skill are to be commended,” Boni said. The winning design resulted from a spur-of-themoment burst of creativity shortly after the newspaper announced the contest in early July, Weaver said. “I did it because I had free time that day,” Weaver said. “It was a one-hour thing that I did. I will work with Thomas to re ne it.” The News Bulletin rack will be Weaver’s rst local public installation, although she had done some pieces of public art in her native Germany. Weaver recently exhibited at the Crestview Public Library and will conduct student art workshops at Northwood Arts and Science Academy in October. DRAIN PROBLEMS? Two three-bedroom, twobathroom homes are among four scheduled Crestview home constructions, said Nitzi Bennett, the nonpro t’s chief executive of cer. Ground-breaking ceremonies for homes on Booker and Savage streets took place earlier this week, and homes on Lee and Cobb avenues are near completion, Bennett said. Florida’s mortgage settlement fund provided partial funding for the projects, a spokesperson for the organization said. But none of it would be possible without 20-plus organizations and businesses helping to sponsor the homes’ construction. “The sponsors are making this happen,” Bennett said. Soon, Stephanie Deese and her two sons will benefit from their generosity. She applied for affordable housing with the organization last fall. “The weekend before Christmas, I got the approval letter in the mail … it was a really nice Christmas present,” Deese said. The Deeses’ dwelling will be built with help from traveling volunteers during a blitz build in October, Bennett said. “The main volunteers are actually called Habitat for Humanity Road Trip Crazies,” she said. The Crazies, including 40 volunteer builders from several states, will construct the foundation to the Sheetrock portion of Deese’s home in three days. Deese plans to help. However, right now, she is just thankful for their efforts. “This is very exciting; I am very grateful,” she said. Crestview News Bulletin | A3 September 13-16, 2014 Community G OVERNMENT By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Two Public Works supervisors will see pay raises if the City Council approves the department’s revised budget. The two supervisors had not been receiving salaries commensurate with their positions since last year, Public Works Director Wayne Steele said. Moving a former supervisor into a foreman’s position to better re ect his duties freed up money to apply to the two supervisors, he said. The City Council voted 3-1 on Monday in favor of the proposal. Councilman Tom Gordon, who voted nay, reiterated his stance against selective raises. “If we need to standardize the pay, I suggest we do it comprehensively,” Gordon said. “I will not support selective pay raises. That was my position last year, and it is my position this year.” Councilwoman Robyn Helt, who also supports sticking to the budget rst approved two weeks ago, was not at the meeting because of a family emergency. “It presents no change to the bottom line of my budget,” Steele said. “This is just moving money around to provide better pay to those with increased responsibilities.” “Sometimes the terminology can be construed that people might misunderstand it,” Council President Shannon Hayes said. “These gentlemen have been paid below what their job called for. This is a salary adjustment.” The Public Works raises follow requested increases for police and re department employees who are also above the 3 percent blanket raises the 2014-15 budget provides all city employees. Page A4 By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Former Crestview High School Principal Bob Jones says the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program raises concerns. Jones, the Florida Association of School Administrators’ president, is involved in a lawsuit that brings teachers’ unions and school administrations together against the state Legislature’s recently passed revision to its original legislation. Initially, the program provided school vouchers to students of failing schools. The vouchers allowed students to attend succeeding schools. However, the program now grants tax breaks to corporations that pay students’ tuition, Jones said Wednesday during the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce Government Issues Committee meeting. The tax credit is a way around the association’s previous lawsuit when the voucher program expanded, allowing students to attend any private school, Jones said. Taxpayer dollars have owed to religious schools — violating the separation of church and state — and to schools that were neither certi ed nor accountable when they did not teach state standards, Jones said. Fortunately, he said, Okaloosa County is not experiencing the same circumstances other Florida communities have seen. “There are charter schools opening up left and right all over the state that are also failing,” Jones said. “People are nding out it’s a cash cow” because of the prevalence of vouchers. Senate President Don Gaetz, on the other hand, sees the program differently. “The law, which this litigation now seeks to overturn ... requires the Auditor General to perform detailed nancial examinations of any scholarship funding organization administering the program in order to ensure good stewardship of taxpayer dollars,” he said in a news release. “This lawsuit, if successful, would destroy this thriving school choice initiative at the very time it has taken on robust accountability requirements.” FROM STAFF REPORTS Outdoor heat rules likely for Okaloosa schools Hot temperatures might soon limit outdoor activities for Okaloosa County students. School district of cials have been working with the Okaloosa County Health Department on the new guidelines for several weeks, according to Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson. She said the new rules would consider both temperature and humidity. “At a certain level, it becomes dangerous,” Jackson said. The discussion was prompted by recent temperatures and the death last month of a student during football practice in another Florida county. The exact details would be released to schools when they’re nal, but Jackson anticipated they would include information on the recommended frequency of water breaks and setting different standards for older and younger students. Recess, gym class and sports would all fall under the new guidelines. District drops English, math exams Okaloosa County students in some math and English classes will no longer be required to take a district end-of-course exam. Under the plan, the district will stop giving such exams in sevenththrough 11th-grade English classes and seventhand eighth-grade math classes. Students in algebra II classes will also no longer take a district EOC. All those students will only take a state assessment. Teachers will still be permitted to give semester exams in those courses if they want, school of cials said. Senior English class students will still take a district EOC exam because the state assessment is not given to them, of cials said. Other courses like civics, algebra I, biology and U.S. history already only require the state assessment. By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com LAUREL HILL — Laurel Hill School opened district play in impressive style against Central on Tuesday. The Hoboes, powered by Bridget Zessin’s 10-kill, 4-ace effort, rolled to a straight set win with 25-7, 25-20 and 25-15. Laurel Hill coach Kent Zessin, Bridget’s dad, was especially pleased with how the team opened the match, but he did see room for improvement. “I thought the rst game was probably one of the best games we’ve played thus far,” he said. “We got away from our hits there in the second and third game. We weren’t attacking the net or hitting our serves nearly like we were in the rst game. “That is a tough opponent. They are going to battle no matter what the score is. We’ve just got to learn not to let down.” The Jaguars led 2-0 early in the rst set. But a serving error, followed by Zessin’s rst kill of the match, tied the set at 2-2. When a Central player was guilty of a net violation, the Hoboes (8-3, 1-0) took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the rst frame. The closest Central got the rest of the set was at 63 as the Jaguars were hit hard by their own mistakes and a precise Hobo attack. Morgan Meeks and Rachel Welch’s service points, along with Zessin’s strong play, proved to be the difference in the set. Welch was in serve as the Hoboes opened an early 3-0 lead in the second set. Laurel Hill never trailed in the set and stretched the lead to 11-4 before Central came ghting back. The Jaguars trailed 22-20 when they misplayed three straight points as the Hoboes took the second set. The third set was tied 11-11 when the Hoboes took control of things. An ace by Welch helped spark the 14-4 Laurel Hill run that ended the match. With Meeks in serve the Hoboes scored the last six points of the night, three of which came on aces, to close out the win. Meeks nished the match with six aces and seven assists. Welch had two aces, two digs and a kill. Ashley Hat eld and Olivia Stewart also had two digs each. www.crestviewbulletin.com September 13-16, 2014 A Page 11 Section S PORTS Bulldogs hold off Patriots By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Crestview High School’s volleyball team still has some growing up to do between now and the end of the season. And perhaps the Bulldogs took a step in that growth process Thursday night. Two nights after dropping a disappointing district match to Niceville, Crestview came back to beat Pace in four sets by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-15 and 26-24. “We are hanging tough is what we are still doing,” Crestview Coach Kathy Combest said. “We played better against Niceville than we did (Thursday). We just need to keep going. “Pace is still a team we have to be ready for. We didn’t let down (after dropping the second set) and giving it over to them. My girls are going to play hard and get it together.” The Bulldogs (3-5) came out of the gate quickly, taking an early 8-2 lead in the rst set. As was the case throughout the night, Kierra Potts and Molly Kitchen were in the middle of Crestview’s scoring as Potts had a kill and Kitchen a block. The Bulldog lead increased to 19-10 and it looked as if Crestview would make quick work of the rst set when Pace came back. The Patriots went on a 10-4 run, closing the Bulldog lead to 23-20. A Cailey Ness kill pushed Crestview’s lead to 24-20. Pace closed to within a point at 24-23 before Nicole LeFevre slammed home the deciding point for Crestview. Up 21-16 in the second set after a kill by Potts, it looked as if the Bulldogs would pull away to go up 2-0 in the match. That wasn’t the case as Pace rallied back to outscore Crestview 9-1 down the stretch to take the set. Marisa Rogers and Potts led the way as Crestview jumped to a 9-1 lead in the third set and never was challenged. The fourth set started out well for Crestview as LeFevre kept the Patriots off balance with her serve and Christa Johnson cleaned things up at the net. The Bulldogs led 7-1 when Pace came clawing back into the set. The Patriots were up 18-14 when the Bulldogs rallied to win. Potts powered the rally as Crestview came back to take the set and the match. Potts led the Bulldog attack with 15 kills, eight blocks, three aces and an assist. Kitchen had 13 assists, six blocks, four kills and two aces. Rogers led the Bulldogs with 17 assists to go along with ve aces and ve kills. LeFevre contributed seven kills, six blocks, three aces and two digs. Crestview’s struggles against Niceville continue By SETH STRINGER 315-4421 | @SethSnwfdn sstringer@nwfdailynews.com NICEVILLE — With District 1-7A rival Crestview in town, Niceville coach John Michael Plummer was asked to shed light on just who the Eagles viewed as county rivals. Considering Niceville’s success in previous seasons, it was a legitimate question. Plummer promptly answered it by mentioning the usual suspects: Fort Walton Beach, Choctaw and, of course, Crestview. But the Bulldogs, coming off a 20-plus-win playoff season from a year ago, entered with a losing streak to the Eagles that extends more than a decade back. Despite a valiant effort at a comeback, that losing streak lived on Tuesday night. Stephanie Kaufman, Sami Mims and Erin Batcho each delivered double-digit kills, Bayley McMenimen looked sharp with 33 assists and the Eagles (7-1, 4-0) won their seventh straight game with a 25-17, 25-23, 15-25 and 25-19 District 1-7A win over the Bulldogs (2-5, 0-2). “Energy’s a big thing we’ve been focusing on and we brought that (Tuesday),” said Plummer, whose team hasn’t dropped a match since getting swept by Mosley in the opener. In a balanced offense, Kaufman was the kill leader with 12, followed by 11 from Mims and 10 from Batcho. “That’s what we’re trying to focus on is getting everyone involved and getting those middles going and getting our outsides going,” Plummer said. Making it all possible is the team’s “quarterback”: McMenimen. “Just really good distribution from our freshman setter,” Plummer said. Crestview’s Marisa Rogers looked impressive as well, dishing out a team-best 16 assists to go along with seven kills. Most of those went to Kierra Potts, who pounded out a team-high 18 kills. The duo was the catalyst behind Crestview’s dominant third-set win, but the Bulldogs couldn’t close out leads time and time again. For instance, the Bulldogs led 23-20 in the second set. But McMenimen fed Batcho and Mims for kills and served up two aces, the last to cap a 25-23 win and put the Eagles up 2-0. Later, after Crestview rebounded with a 25-15 win, the Bulldogs jumped out to 8-2 lead. But again, the advantage didn’t hold as Niceville went on a 10-2 run and never looked back. Batcho and Kaufman delivered four kills each and McMenimen had 13 assists in the nal set to cap the 25-19 victory. Morgan Meeks sets up a Hobo teammate against Central. Laurel Hill Coach Kent Zessin gives the team some pointers during a timeout. “I thought the rst game was probably one of the best games we’ve played thus far.” Kent Zessin Laurel Hill coach Crestview’s Cailey Ness goes up for a block. This week’s efforts between, collection jugs at Publix and Desi’s Restaurant, along with other donations, helped bring the campaign to just $2,624.43 under goal, according to police. “You can almost see the dog hair on his uniform,” event coordinator Kimmons said jokingly. Of cer Jerad Mullinnix — who has expressed interest in becoming one of the department’s two new dog handlers — has volunteered off-duty hours to help raise money to reconstitute the K-9 unit. As resident Kathy Morrow stuffed a $20 bill into a donation jug on Monday outside Publix, Mullinnix said he appreciates the community’s assistance. “It’s nice to see how much public support we receive,” he said. “I think police dogs are awesome,” Morrow said. “My daughter helped raise money for dogs in her hometown, so here’s mine.” The CPD’s table included incentives to donate. Giveaways included gun locks, car rst aid kits, pens, key rings and information on bicycle safety, installing child safety seats and bullying. The most popular giveaways among shoppers’ children were stuffed animals donated by Wal-Mart. Several members of the Midtown Neighborhood Watch program also volunteered to help staff the table, share information about police services and greet shoppers. “I just can’t believe the outpouring,” member Luke Sheplock said. “The people are so generous.” Several area businesses have pledged money toward the K-9 campaign, Kimmons said, adding he anticipates checks from CHELCO and Trustmark Bank. ONLINE See www. crestviewbulletin.com/ news/public-safety for video of residents supporting the K-9s for Crestview campaign Library now offers virtual visitation with inmates By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — North Okaloosa residents who want to visit loved ones in the Okaloosa County Jail won’t have to set foot in the facility. Instead of communicating through a telephone receiver and glass partition, the Crestview jail now allows inmates to communicate with friends and family using a computer with Internet access and a web camera. Since July, visitors have been able to speak face-to-face with inmates using the Securus Technologies Video Visitation system. For a fee, residents could log virtual visits from home, or for free at the East James Lee Boulevard jail. Now, Crestview Public Library staffers are offering a third option: visit, for a fee to Securus, at the library. The library now allows residents with no Internet access or web camera to use the video visitation service from an enclosed webcam reservation tutor room, giving visitors some privacy from the rest of the library. Library Director Jean Lewis said this is just another service the library provides to the community. “The library tries to meet the needs of all our customers and we are happy to provide this service for them,” she said. Okaloosa County Jail’s conversion from personal to virtual visits has resulted in an increase in on-site visits, according to Chief Correctional Of cer Paul Lawson. “We average about 50 paid, off-site (remote) visits per week and about 250 on-site visits per week,” he wrote in an email. “Presently, the cost is $5 for a 20minute visit. Inmates can have up (to) six 20-minute visits per week.” “We no longer have to move the inmate from housing to the visitation area; they visit from their housing area,” Lawson said. Previously, the correctional staff had a set schedule, based on where the inmate was housed within the facility, he said. Your work as part of the body of Christ What is the Body of Christ supposed to be about? The answer most likely will vary with each person. Some people with a physically or emotionally abusive father might be unable to imagine a loving and caring Heavenly Father. People squeamish about blood or suffering might have dif culty recognizing the horror of the sacri ce Jesus made when he died on the cross. Some who do not like to be told what to do or have their choices challenged will pick and choose what in the Bible they will incorporate into their lives. Still, the Body of Christ is supposed to be about: z Proclaiming the good news of who Jesus is and the fact that he offers love and forgiveness to humanity z Making disciples, nurturing them and building strong relationships among believers z Preserving and promoting the truth of God’s message z Maintaining the integrity of our worship, so we do not focus on ourselves or our needs in worship, but focus on God’s greatness z Caring for the needs of God’s children z Demonstrating the presence of God’s kingdom here on Earth Is this what you are doing as a part of the Body of Christ? Or is your faith all about you instead? The Rev. Mark Broadhead is Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Crestview’s pastor. F AITH REV. MARK BROADHEAD From the Pulpit
