Wedding reception will commemorate father, leader who loved big parties By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Even terminal ill ness couldnt keep Roger Berry from his daughters wedding. Roger died from liver cancer July 27, but two weeks earlier, he watched Alycia and Joshua Day be come spouses from a wheelchair in his backyard. The July 12 ceremony was planned within a couple of days, but Alycia and her mother, Rhonda, are thankful Roger got to see his only daughter tie the knot. I was so happy that my father was able to give me away, Alycia said. It was worth it, having my dad there. He seemed very at peace (afterward). Friends and family will join the couple on Aug. 30 to pay tribute to Roger, the Crestview High School Quarterback Clubs president of six years. The occasion also will serve as a wedding reception. My dad was really big about throwing a big party, Alycia said. When he looks down (from Heav en), he will say that is one heck of a party. 1980s music Rogers favorite will be played, she said. Rhonda said her husband of 25 years would have enjoyed the music montage. He loved parties, and he loved to entertain, she said. He would have thought this would be hilarious. By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Niceville United Methodist Church leaders have opted not to move into Northview Plaza. Niceville UMC, which has a Crestview campus, St. Mark UMC on P.J. Ad ams Parkway, seeks to expand its ministry in the Hub City. But Jayme Na bors of NBI properties, which manages the North Ferdon boulevard plaza, said church ofcials de cided not to lease 16,500 square feet in the plazas south end. It couldnt satisfy their needs with what they were looking for, Nabors said. Greg McKinnon, an ex ecutive pastor at Niceville UMC, said the decision to keep looking for a new lo cation came after a church engineer noticed addition al remodeling work would be necessary. It would have cost more than we planned, McKinnon said. Now, church ofcials are considering leasing 11 acres on Old Bethel Road. McKinnon said the church should reach a decision by the middle of next month. NBI and the church parted on good terms, Na bors said. NBI soon will renovate the plazas south wing which includes the former Movies & More into retail space. Naybors estimated the renovation, set to begin within the next 45 days, would give the plaza ve additional retail spaces. St. Mark recently n ished a $1.25 million ex pansion project adding more childrens ministry classrooms, additional parking, a childrens playground, and a larger sanctuary with additional seating to the current building. The campus regularly has 600 in attendance on Sundays, church ofcials said. By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Monday, the City Council will honor Dr. Naomi Barnes as this years recipient of the Mae Reatha Coleman Crestview Citizen of the Year Award. Barnes is the third recipient of the award, a namesake of the long time community activist and rst recipient. She was selected by a committee chaired by Coleman and was nominated for her role as an educator and community volunteer in multiple areas. I was surprised, because theres other people in the community who have done a lot for the people, Barnes said. I guess God just chose this time to bless me. Barnes, a former Southside Ele mentary School teacher, volunteered as an after-school tutor at Mount Zion A.M.E. Church and the Okaloo sa Youth Development Center. As a Crestview Concerned Citi zens volunteer, she helped patrol neighborhoods to deter crime. In ad dition, she worked with Coleman as a volunteer on the Okaloosa County Crestview Area HIV Taskforce. Barnes was a parent volunteer at the former Richbourg Middle School, Shoal River Middle School and Crestview High School. She also was a parent volunteer for the Shoal River Middle School golf team. She is a member of the Crestview Civitan Club and sits on the club board of directors. An active member of Gideons In ternational, Barnes provided Bibles for the Mount Zion A.M.E. Church and for troubled youths at the Oka loosa Youth Academy. She donates canned goods, clothes and household supplies to area food banks and shelters, and once helped gather furniture to fur nish a ve-bedroom residence for underprivileged residents. Sometimes she and her husband would drop off truck-loads of food at my house, Coleman said. She is a community worker. Beverly Ann Herman Bruneau BEVERLY ANN HERMAN BRUNEAU By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Ruth Langdon, Okaloosa Countys newest 100-yearold resident, attributes her longevity to keeping a healthy lifestyle. I live a clean life, she said. I didnt smoke. I didnt drink. And I keep active. Staffers at the Crestview Rehabilitation Center, which Langdon recently moved into, surprised the centenarian with a birthday in her honor Tuesday afternoon. Family members from Indiana ew to Northwest Florida for the occasion. Joining two of her children, Joan Hollmann and Bob Langdon, who live in Crestview, were grandchildren Penny Blake, Candy Booe and Rodney Beaman. Resident Jos Goicochea treated the gathering to a robust rendition of Happy Birthday to You before everyone enjoyed punch and a chocolate birthday cake topped with pink whipped cream icing. As for the biggest change Langdons seen over the last 100 years, her answer was instantaneous. Computers, she said. The board unanimously approved of implementing the program because the CRA district encompasses more than the Main Street and historic districts. Board member Tom Gordon moved to approve spending up to $50,000 of CRA money in the 2014-15 scal year to provide approved applicants with $5,000 grants. The residential grants, like their commercial counterparts, would require a 50 percent match. They would not apply to rental units, which are considered commercial properties, City Clerk Betsy Roy said. Because there had been no provisions for improving the CRA districts residential areas, board member Robyn Helt said, this policy was brought about to address that de ciency, One thing this will do is see if there is any interest by the residents who live in the CRA, Roy said. It will show us if there is any interest to improve residential properties in the CRA district. The city awaits state approval to add residential zoning to the downtown historic district. It would allow the establishment of residential units over businesses and permit construction of new downtown residences. Main Street Crestview Association member Cal Zethmayr lauded the facade improvement program, the bene ts of which he has seen in other Florida communities CRA districts. This is a good project to take on that other CRAs in other areas have successfully done, Zethmayr said. FROM STAFF REPORTS County stays the course on backyard chicken ban Okaloosa County commissioners have rejected a bid to allow backyard poultry in residential areas. Commissioner Nathan Boyles has championed the cause since late July, when he learned that Mary Esther resident Torrie Coxs chickens placed her in violation of county code. But he failed to sway fellow board members with arguments that prohibiting backyard chickens in residential areas amounts to over-regulation. Commissioner Dave Parisot based his objection on growing up on a farm in Illinois. Commissioner Wayne Harris said he grew up under the city ordinances of St. Louis, Mo., and also couldnt support chickens in residential areas. Okaloosa County Growth Management Director Elliot Kampert told the board other Northwest Florida areas, including Pensacola and Escambia, are growing more tolerant of backyard chickens. He said Crestview and Fort Walton Beach city leaders also have had discussions about such an allowance. Boyles said he will continue to work with Cox and county staff to nd a solution. High stakes in Okaloosas primary election Big decisions are in store for whoever is elected to of ce after voters go to the polls Aug. 26. Anyone elected to the Okaloosa County Commission will face the ongoing challenge of restoring the publics trust in local government, Commissioner Nathan Boyles said. One major decision could be creating a storm water utility either by raising sales taxes or assessing fees on commercial and residential property. The commission, he said, must begin to make strategic investments in county infrastructure that have been too long delayed. The textbooks students study, the technology they use, the schools they attend and the way their teachers are evaluated will all be in the hands of those elected to the Okaloosa School Board. During the next four years, the board will have to decide how it will deal with schools outgrowing current facilities and how it can increase the number of computers available to students as more tests go online. The Okaloosa County Clerk of Courts of ces 110 employees carry out three crucial county functions: They keep the court system running smoothly, maintain thousands of county records and serve as accountant and auditor for the Board of County Commissioners. A signi cant challenge facing the Clerks of ce as it transitions to new leadership will be an ongoing conversion from paper records to eles, said Circuit Judge William Stone, Okaloosa Countys administrative judge. The state has mandated all court records be eled, and that means melding two types of software, Stone said. Residential facade improvement grants OKd BRIEFS NATHAN BOYLES 2014

RA 0067136 Police notice motorists increased attention in school zones By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Minimal opening-week traf c stops have Crestview Police ofcers breathing easier and hoping for safer school crossings throughout the rest of the academic year. Crestview police reported just two stops along school routes. Meanwhile, reworked traf c patterns have relieved some of the back-ups and congestion that plagued several school zones. This has been awesome, Of cer Sam Kimmons said from his crossing assignment at Crestview High School. In years past, weve had parents trying to turn off (State Road) 85 and blocking the intersection. Auxiliary Sgt. Al Humphrey, who also guards the crosswalk near Shoal River Middle and Riverside Elementary Schools, said the main problem at the high school zone is drivers who dont pay attention to the zones beginning and end. Most drivers are OK, but we hear a few, But the school zone started way back there! (comments), Humphrey said. Yes, but its still active up here. LESS BACK-UP AT ANTIOCH At Antioch Elementary School, where more than 100 parents usually drive their children to school, traf c often backs up as far as Antioch Road, Of cer Wanda Hulion said. However, this year has been a pleasant surprise, despite the expected afternoon congestion, she said. So far everythings going real smooth, Hulion said. Im real surprised. Increased traf c on the heavily traveled P.J. Adams Parkway/Antioch Road corridor remains cause for concern, Hulion said. Youre going to have the occasional driver coming through who doesnt notice the (school zone) lights, she said. You get a lot of out-of-towners who use Antioch as a bypass around Crestview and theyre not familiar with the school zones. We have to make people aware, hey, you gotta slow down. Police spokesman Lt. Andrew Schneider said parents need to plan to encounter heavy traf c in some school zones during drop-off and pickup periods. When of cers are working in school zones for crossing children, they cannot also direct traf c for parents exiting the school, Schneider said. Because there is no budget money to rehire crossing guards whose positions were eliminated at the start of the 2013-14 scal year, of cers are pulled from patrol duties to protect students, Schneider said. Their attentions cannot be divided between the safe crossing of children walking to school and for parents electing to drive their children, as those walking are not afforded the same safety as those in vehicles, he said. K9 Kilo, whos been with OCSO about six years, most recently worked with the Street Crimes Unit. Now, he and Deputy Mark Nucci will strive to keep drugs out of Okaloosa schools. Throughout the school year, they will check classrooms, lockers and parking lots to detect illegal drugs. Nucci said Kilos presence should actually act as a deterrent to drugs on school grounds, because students will never know which schools or event the K9 team will visit on any given day. In addition to narcotics detection duties, K9 Kilo is also a good natured ambassador for the OCSO, Sheriff Larry Ashley, also a former K9 handler, said. He will help forge stronger bonds between deputies and students of all ages and backgrounds, one of our major goals for building positive relationships throughout our community. Man receiving treatment at center for sexually violent offenders CRESTVIEW An Okaloosa County jury found Alvaro Ignacio Abaunza guilty of sexual violence. Abaunza, 44, will be con ned inde nitely at the Florida Civil Commitment Center, a secure treatment center for sexually violent offenders, according to the State Attorneys Of ce. The jury heard testimony from victims and three psychologists during the two-day trial in Crestview, the State Attorneys Of ce reported. Psychologists testi ed that Abaunza had compulsions to engage in deviant sexual behavior. They said there was a high risk that he would reoffend unless he was committed to the center. Abaunza will remain at the facility until Circuit Judge Michael A. Flowers determines he is safe to be released. ALVARO ABAUNZA PHOTOS BY BRIAN HUGHES | News Bulletin Auxiliary Sgt. I dont always have a grasp on the larger picture of what is taking place in society, various subcultures hurts or frustration from various prejudices. My thoughts and reactions to various incidents locally and around the globe are pretty much based on my naivet. I hurt for people whose lives are torn apart by violence and hatred. But I also am confused by the need some have to respond with the same level, or a greater level, of violence. Many, including I, have lifted prayers for the family of the young man in Ferguson, Mo., whose life abruptly ended this past week. No parent should ever have to bury a child. Prayers have been lifted for a law enforcement of cer whose life has changed forever. Prayers have been lifted for a community left reeling in violence in response to this tragic event. I understand hurt and pain but not to a level that leads to violence or hatred. I do not understand why people who do not know the deceased young mans family rioted, looted, spoke words of hatred or attempted to maim or kill others. I dont understand why people who were not present when the tragedy occurred speculate about events, turning rumor into fact, stirring up trouble so needlessly and with such horri c results. Jesus Christ calls us to make peace with our enemy. We are called to not jump to conclusions or spread rumors. We are called to right wrongs when they occur, but not through acts of violence. Jesus had much to say about turning the other cheek, praying for ones enemies, treating others the way you want to be treated and striving for peace. His words apply wherever violence occurs. Retribution is the worlds way, not Gods. Continue praying for the hurt, anger, hatred and violence so prevalent in our world. Pray for Gods Holy Spirit to bring peace. The Rev. Mark Broadhead is Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Crestviews pastor. Mission provides free food, clothes on exible schedule By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW While the morning sun climbs in the sky, Gene Stanton and Lonny Fuller work hard, loading hundreds of pounds of food and produce into their trailer. The men volunteer with Brother Raymond Williams New Beginnings Baptist Ministries Missions. The food from Crestviews Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie is just past its last date of sale, but still fresh. And a bargain at 2 cents a pound. The mission, in partnership with the Bay Area Food Bank in Milton, buys food from the grocery stores, Missions Director Jimmy Smith said. Church members weekly tithes and offerings help fund the foods purchase. The mission also receives donations of government commodities. Almost 1,100 monthly rely on the food bank, so the organization established a daily twohour distribution schedule, parceling out goods between 10 a.m. and noon Mondays through Fridays. We let people come the day or week thats convenient to them, Smith said. The mission daily serves 50 to 60 people. For the homeless, volunteers prepare bags of readyto-eat food that doesnt require cooking. The purpose is to help others at no charge, organizers said. We provide food and clothes here, Smith said. Nothing costs nobody anything. FROM THE PULPIT SUBMISSIONS Send church announcements to news@crestview bulletin.com. www.crestviewbulletin.com August 23-26, 2014 By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com BAKER Its a question that Baker Schools volleyball team hears every year. Can you keep the streak alive? The Gators are actually riding three streaks as they head into Tuesdays season opener at Laurel Hill. Baker has been to the state nal for three straight years. The team has won 11 consecutive district championships and have made the playoffs for the last 21 years. Keeping the traditions alive weighs heavily on any team, but even more so with a team that has just one senior. Gator Coach Tommiko Parks thinks the team will be up for the challenge. The girls are ready to play and they understand there is pressure on them, she said. When you lose that many seniors (six), its hard when you have to regroup and put people in new spots. The girls understand how much pressure there is on them and they are ready for it. They are striving to be the team that keeps the streak going. They dont want to be the team that loses the streak. Hartley Moate, the lone senior, is surrounded by juniors and sophomores and she admits to feeling the burden of leadership at times. It feels kind of strange being the only one in my class and having the younger ones as my teammates now, she said. I have to make sure the younger people come up and be strong. I have to teach them by myself and to make sure they are motivated to do well. While Moate is the only senior, shell get help with the leadership from a deep junior class. The junior class is a strong class, Parks said. They have more experience than a lot of junior classes around. Ashley Black played last year as a sophomore. Lena Daoud started last year at setter and she moves to libero this year, and Brittany Brunson started last year on the outside. Weve got some girls that have some experience. They werent so much leaned upon to be the leaders of the team the last couple of years because weve had so many seniors, but they are stepping up. They are doing what they have to do. Parks said the sophomore class is equally impressive, having already played a lot of volleyball with some dynamic leaders. Daoud said its easy for the Gators to remain motivated. The motivation for us is to keep it (the championship streak) going, she said. We dont want to be the ones that fail and let down everybody. At different levels its very dif cult replacing the last years seniors because all of them had great strengths. But I think we are doing a pretty good job replacing their strengths. Junior hitter Brittany Brunson believes the Gators will be successful if they focus on the small things. I think the most important thing we need to do is work as a team and communicate more than we have been doing, she said. Most of us are pretty good friends outside of volleyball so we have kind of just come together more. Brunson believes its important for this years team to remember the lessons theyve learned from past championship squads. Youve got to work hard, for sure, she said. And the state tournament is just another game that you have to play through one at a time. By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Expectations are high for Crestview High Schools volleyball team, which opens the season Monday at Milton. Crestview hosts Choctaw in the home opener at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Coming off their rst playoff appearance since 2004, the Bulldogs are con dent. We are not dropping our goals, Coach Kathy Combest said. Our motto is, One team, one goal. We want everybody to have the same goal to win district and go further in the playoffs. The teams seniors have bought into the plan. We are going to the playoffs again, Molly Kitchen said. When asked about beating District 1-7A rival and nemesis, Kitchen replied, Thats on our to do list. Nichole LeFevre was even more speci c in what she wanted to accomplish in her senior season. I want to go to the playoffs, she said. I want (us) to be district champs. I believe we can do it. Weve got the team together this summer and I see it coming 100 percent. The Bulldogs have a mix of six seniors and young talent. Combest, now in her fourth year coaching the team, thinks this group could be her best Crestview team yet. I see it as a more rounded volleyball team, she said. Everybody can do something. They play well together. There is a lot of volleyball experience out there. Macie Adams and Baylee Estep join Kitchen and LeFevre as the most experienced members of the senior class. Combest said the senior class knows what she wants. They understand whats expected of them, she said. They understand that we are going to work hard. You dont have to preach that all the time. They are good leaders. Combest sees Crestviews District 1-7A as being a tossup among any number of teams. Niceville is the defending champion, but Combest thinks the Bulldogs and Fort Walton Beach can challenge the Eagles. And she said Navarre and Tate are capable of making some noise in the district as well. Win or lose though, Combest will be happy if she sees the desire to win from her team, knowing that with the right desire winning will come. A lot of people say that winning is everything, but I dont think winning is everything, she said. I think wanting to win is everything. Thats hard in my book. You always want to win when you step into any event. PHOTOS BY RANDY DICKSON | News Bulletin Marissa Rogers delivers a set during Thursdays practice. By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Award Chevrolets name may have changed but the dealerships goal of exemplary customer service remains, according to the new owner. HONESTY AND TRANSPARENCY Allen Turner, a Gulf Breeze resident and owner of Allen Turner Hyundai in Pensacola, said customers can still expect no pushy or deceptive sales tactics from Allen Turner Chevrolet, the business new name since Aug. 1. Crestviews staff already has a great reputation for being straightforward with customers, Turner said, adding that he will ensure such ethical treatment stays intact. Allen Turners business model is built on a foundation of honesty and transparency, a model thats earned the loyalty of many customers at Allen Turner Hyundai and will earn the loyalty of many more at Allen Turner Chevrolet, a news release stated. General manager Wayne McCranie, who has overseen day-to-day operations for the past 11 years, will continue supervising over 35 employees, and the dealership will continue to offer automotive maintenance services, according to a news release. VIBRANT COMMUNITY Turner, the Pensacola dealerships owner since 1998, said Crestviews market has long interested him. Allan and Burt Ward, longtime Crestview residents who owned the dealership since 1999, decided to get out of the car business, according to McCranie. That decision, Turner said, provided an opportunity. We are excited about joining the community, he said. Crestview seems like a vibrant community.
