Now, members want to give some support of their own. “For 24 of those years, all of the proceeds have all gone back into the facility to im prove the facility and keep it up,” BARA President Mark Todd said. “This year, we wanted to (give) something back to the community.” The gift, $1,000 in proceeds, will benet local breast can cer research and awareness. Sally Cary, an American Cancer Society community events specialist, said the do nation goes to ACS’s Emerald Coast ofce in Fort Walton Beach. The branch, which also covers Crestview and Baker, will help fund patient services. That includes pro viding free wigs to women re ceiving radiation treatments and offering a 24-hour infor mational and support hotline. Todd said he and other members were inspired to support breast cancer re search after learning Sadie Lynn, a member of rodeo participants the All-American Cowgirl Chicks, was diag nosed with cancer at a young age. “Being aware of that ... we felt that breast cancer (awareness) was something we wanted to contribute to,” Todd said. BARA members plan to continue supporting breast cancer awareness with future rodeos, Todd said. And that’s good, because many residents need the help, Cary said. “One out of eight women is going to be diagnosed with breast cancer, and their chances of beating it are very, very good now,” she said. There is a 3 percent — or one out of 36 — chance that a woman will die from breast cancer, according to the ACS website, cancer.org. Death rates have declined because of awareness, early detection and improved treatments. April’s two-day rodeo at tracted almost 3,000 attend ees each night, Todd said. The chain eateries’ Crestview franchises will be tenants in a shopping center under construction between Starbucks and Golden Asian Buffet on South Ferdon Boulevard. Papa Murphy’s, founded in 1981, is the world’s fth-largest pizza chain, accord ing to its website, but customers don’t eat at the store. Instead, patrons order from a menu including sever al varieties of stuffed braided-crust pizzas or a create-your-own option; then, they take the prepared pizza home and bake it in their oven. The Crestview location – which joins prop erties in Gulf Breeze and Niceville under the same regional franchise owner — will tenta tively hire 20 employees. The Panera Bread bakery-caf will feature dine-in and take-away options, including a drive-up window. It will be one of the rst in the region to offer what company CEO Ron Shaich dubbed “Panera 2.0.” A Rapid Pick-Up advance ordering and payment system will let customers bypass counter clerks by ordering and paying online or from a mobile device, Panera Regional Mar keting Manager Amanda Saxon said. Patrons who dine in the caf will avoid what Shaich called “the mosh pit” of trying to place an order and then dodge other customers as they pick up their food. “We will begin hiring approximately 50 as sociates, managers and bakers in July,” Saxon said, adding interested applicants can apply at www.panerabread.jobs. Ferdon Blvd. BRIEFS By BRIAN HUGHES Arts and Entertainment Editor brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Yanira Alva rez-Ortiz says her new eat ery is more than a place for a hearty, home-cooked Puerto Rican meal. She and her husband, Jorge Alvarez, a 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) soldier, created Puerto Rico in Crestview to be a gather ing place where lively music plays, family members of all ages can gather and domino games can run nonstop. Such culture is special for the couple, who met at a chin chorro in Jorge’s Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, hometown. “The food at a chinchorro is special because it is home made,” Alvarez-Ortiz said. “The 7th Group families love chinchorros. They’ve been waiting so long for someone to start the concept here. It’s our way to share a little of our culture with Crestview.” CAri RI BBe E AN c C OMes ES tT O Crestview RESTVIEW “There is no one in the area who does Caribbean food,” Alvarez-Ortiz said. “People know dishes from Mexico or South America, but they are not the same. “We speak the same lan guage but the food is com pletely different. It is less spicy but it has a special taste that makes it Caribbean.” The restaurant, which holds its grand opening 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow, fea tures a simple menu of island dishes. Combos include yellow or white rice with chicken, pork chops or beefsteak, and sides including red beans, sweet yellow plantains, and fried mashed green plantains called tostones. Specialties include chicken or pork mofongo — mashed, seasoned green plantains — and pork or chicken skewers. Flan, a light custard with caramel sauce, is AlvarezOrtiz’s special dessert, avail able in vanilla, cream cheese, Nutella, guava, coconut and pineapple. “I spend a lot of time mak ing sure the caramel sauce is just right,” she said. “If you cook it too long, it is bitter.” LOc C A ll LL Y gr GR O w W N, lL O c C A ll LL Y MADe E Purchasing fruit and vege tables from local growers was an easy business decision, the couple said. “It is important for the economy of Crestview,” Al varez-Ortiz said. “I’m buy ing from people who work the land here. They’re going to come eat at my place and I want to contribute to their business. “If someone sells honey, I want to buy their honey for my an. If they sell peppers and other vegetables, I want to buy them for my dishes.” The restaurant shares out door covered dining with the adjacent Hot Spot, where pa trons may also buy drinks. That kind of neighborly collaboration is one reason the couple chose Crestview for their business. “Crestview is a nice and quiet town compared to the big cities, and we absolutely loved it; so we said to ourselves, ‘Why not stay and bring our food and make Crestview our home?’” Alvarez-Ortiz said. Earlier this month, I spent a week at The Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, Ga., where I received instruction on contemplative, or centering, prayer. We participants remained silent except for during daily worship and class times. Eating meals silently allowed us to focus on God’s generosity and appreciate the food’s avor. The scripture “Taste and see that the Lord is good” took on new meaning. Walking silently, we focused on the wonder, beauty and countless intricacies of God’s creation. The scripture, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” took on new meaning. Silently watching Canada geese, chipmunks, squirrels, birds and bugs provided a new sense of wonder at the many creatures over which God watches and cares. The scripture, “Not a sparrow falls to the ground that your heavenly Father does not know about it” took on new meaning. In this world of many noises and distractions, spending time in silence and in prayer is a challenge. Yet, the benets were many. God never ceases to speak, reveal himself or provide life in us and around us. May I suggest you allow yourself some time to be still and quiet, just focusing on God’s presence, his love and his grace that is given to you? When you can do this, you will also learn to nd God wherever you are. The Rev. Mark Broadhead is Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Crestview’s pastor. 850.678.2313 | Jor danA irEn terprises .c om SP4287 “ C omfor t done right so y ou c a n sleep tonight!” G et y our S y stem Ready with our Planned Main tenanc e P r ogr am! Liedel — who learned about his award May 24 during a state banquet in Orlando — said he’s happy to see involvement in the organization become a family tradition. “My father was a knight; I have been a knight for the past 20 years. I have two sons who are knights living in Michigan, and now my grandson (Billy Thompson) just started this year.” Liedel said. Thompson said Liedel’s example inspires him. “It makes me walk a little taller, me being a fourth-generation (member) and him being Knight of the Year,” he said. www.crestviewbulletin.com May 31June 3, 2014 Page A9 S PORTs S B ULLETIN B OARD Projecting the Baker offense By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com Editor’s note: Here’s a look at the Baker School football team’s offense by position. Our June 4-6 edition will feature a look at the Gator defense. BAKER — The Baker School football team’s sum mer workouts start June 9, and the Gators are trying to repeat as District 1-1A cham pions this fall. The team enters summer drills coming off a 41-34 win over Chipley in the May 22 game. Baker Coach Matt Brunson, who installed a new spread, hurry-up offense this spring, said the summer will be spent getting the Gators in the condition needed to run a fast-paced attack. The team must replace tailback D.J. Thomas, who last year rushed for more than 2,000 yards. The good news is plenty of talent re turns. And in Brunson’s sys tem, if a player sticks around long enough and puts in the work, he will have a chance to play by senior year. Quarterback Jon Beck, a rising junior who returns as the starter, started a few games as a freshman when then-senior Adam Crowson went down with an injury. Beck started every game last year and threw for more than 1,000 yards. A high jump er on the track team, he has the athleticism needed to ex cel in the spread offense and the arm to get the ball down the eld to open receivers. Beck is solidly entrenched as the starting quarterback, but Brunson has other op tions if he’s unable to play. Austin Davis, a rugged runner with a strong arm, can do many of the things Beck does, and the Gators won’t miss a beat with Davis in the shotgun attack. The third option at quar terback is rising senior David Oglesby. Oglesby, the backup quarterback last year, also plays receiver and will be a key contributor on the eld at several positions on both sides of the football. Running back Austin Martin enters the summer as the man to beat to replace Thomas at tailback. Martin, a two-year starter at outside linebacker on defense, Thomas’ backup, showed he is more than capable of carrying the larg er share of the load. When Martin needs a breather, Davis will have a chance to carry the football. Tristan Carroll also will see playing time at tailback. Montae Barto has a big body that will be called on in short yardage, power situations. Barto also will see time at fullback and possibly tight end. Receiver The Gators showed they could throw the long ball against Chipley off a series of play action passes and straight passing routes. Jacob Nixon likely will be the rst option for the deep ball, but he’s far from the only threat on the outside. Josh Mayhew is a speed ster who can stretch a de fense. Oglesby is a reliable pass catcher who can get free and break off big plays. Jonathan Gatewood will be an option at tight end, as will Barto. Both Gatewood and Barto are big physi cal players that will block and can cause problems for smaller defenders. Offensive line Brunson is pleased with the progress off the offensive line that must replace start ers Zach Way, Dakota Camp bell and Jake Rainey. Fortu nately for the Gators, rising junior Bubba Ellis returns to anchor the line at center. Ellis’ ability to execute the shotgun snap could make or break the Gator offense this fall. Brunson said Ellis is tran sitioning nicely to the long snap and was perfect during the spring game and an ear lier scrimmage. Dakota Blackburn is the other returning starter from last year’s offensive line and will play a big part in opening holes for Gator ball carriers and protecting the quarterbacks. Ben Martin and Calvin Blakenship are a couple of other players to watch as Baker rebuilds the offensive front. Photos by RANDY DICKSON | News Bulletin Baker School rising junior Jon Beck will return this fall as starting quarterback. David Oglesby is projected to start at one of Baker’s receiver spots this season. Dakota Blackburn (75) and Austin Martin will be key parts of the Baker offense. Austin Davis (11) carries out a fake handoff as Jon Beck drops back to pass. Davis will be the Gators’ backup quarterback and running back. Page A10 May 31-June 3, 2014 By BRIAN HUGHES Arts and Entertainment Editor brianh@crestviewbulletin.com The great thing about selfpublishing is that anybody can release their inner novel. The bad thing is that many wannabe authors do. Clich-riddled tomes fraught with improbable scenarios and stilted dialogue often ll such books and e-books. Fortunately, “Last Flight of the Electra,” a nely wrought tale of nautical adventure and historic conjecture, isn’t among them. Crestview author Paul A. Hinton combated the rst-time writer’s urge to beleaguer his 360-page adventure with metaphor, mercilessly slaughtering literary darlings in a successful effort to skirt the traps into which many novice authors have tumbled. “Stephen King tells you to get rid of the adverbs and get rid of the clichs,” Hinton said. “You don’t realize how much you think in clichs until you start writing. You get trained in them in Southern culture.” HISTORIC CONJECTURE Hinton, a music minister at the First United Methodist Church, found inspiration for “Last Flight...” 10 years ago on a mission trip to the Marshall Islands. Since then, his patient wife, Cecily, has put up with another woman in Hinton’s life: aviator Amelia Earhart, who vanished during a 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe. During a tour of Roi-Namur island, Hinton saw the ruins of a secret Japanese mini-submarine program base operational more than four years before the attack on Pearl Harbor. “The islanders claim they saw Amelia there,” Hinton said. “They said in one of the jail cells, they found a brooch or a pin with the initials ‘AE’ on it.” Taking cues from countless reports, investigations, searches and historic conjectures, Hinton weaves an exciting tale of an elderly Marshallese mariner who constructs an oversized outrigger from the remains of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra and sails it to Hawaii to deliver the yer’s journal. His main characters, including the mariner Truc, the British sailing couple who rst encounter him, several Coast Guardsmen, and a Honolulu TV crew, are richly developed and believable. FORGIVABLE TYPOS A delightful love story enhances the tale without getting smutty or drippy, and sufcient technical detail makes situations believable — and exciting — but not ponderous. There are also quite a few typos, mostly the kind spell check won’t snag. The admiral’s walking “gate” comes to mind. And just as Ian Fleming famously issued James Bond the wrong gun in an early 007 novel, experts might nd some technical error to quibble over. Like a Honolulu TV station would have a K call sign rather than a W. I know it, and my TV friends know it. But do I care? Not a whit, because “Last Flight of the Electra” tumbles along with such compelling, page-turning energy that a rst-time author’s minor errors are easily forgiven as readers enjoy a sensational beach read. By BRIAN HUGHES Arts and Entertainment Editor brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIECRESTVIE W — Man’s fatal attraction to war contrasted with his aspirations for beauty is the discussion topic of a multimedia presentation Tuesday evening at the Crestview Public Library. French art historian Marie-Claude Tildach-Bohler presents “Art, Literature and Music in Times of War.” After four years in the 1970s as a diplomat at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., TildachBohler returned 10 years later as an American Air Force ofcer’s wife. A passion for music, art and history, and being a selfdescribed “museum rat,” led her to a position as docent and guide at the Fort Worth Museum of American Art. “Music has occupied a major and constant place in my life, as have my interests in philosophy, religions, history — with a special focus on Greco-Latin antiquity — and my passion for human voice,” Tildach-Bohler said. She teaches French language and conversation classes in Niceville, where she and her husband, Don, live when not at their Montpelier, France, home. The Tildach-Bohlers are members of the Crestview Sister City Program and together presented a history of the famed Bayeux Tapestry to participants in last summer’s exchange visit to France. The tapestry, considered the world’s oldest graphic novel, is one of the artworks to be discussed during the presentation at the library. W ANT ANT TOTO GOGO ? Class of 2014 Graduating Hoboes: To quote Mark Twain, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” As you complete this milestone in life, I encourage you to set a goal and work diligently until you achieve it. Always remember there will be setbacks, but your character is dened not by each fall, but your ability to rise again and continue the course. I wish you opportunity, safety, and prosperity.
