Historic storm closes schools, businesses and streets CLARK BARROW | Special to the News BulletinIce covers blueberry buds in Baker.By BRIAN HUGHES and MATTHEW BROWN682-6524 | @cnbBrian @cnbMatthew brianh@crestviewbulletin.com, matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Todays forecasted high is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a significant change for Northwest Florida residents who just Wednesday awoke to frozen plants and white streets. North Okaloosa residents made the most of unFloridalike weather that resulted in frozen rain, icicles and sleet, altered work schedules and three days off for Okaloosa County students. Some residents sledded down hills in toboggans, saucers and boogie boards. Others made do with laundry baskets and garbage can tops. Many watched movies and relaxed indoors to be safe. I know better than to go out on icy roads, Crestview resident Janice Marcus said. In the Sugar Creek neighborhood, where the temperature was 22 degrees Fahrenheit, Dee Skinner said her sons Michael, 10, and Jimmy, 15, went for a walk with their dad, Jim. The boys loved it! she said. In Laurel Hill, where morning temperatures were three degrees lower, April Tucker said she and her husband, Todd, huddled around a space heater. And ate cookies a lot of cookies, she said. It seems like good winter comfort food. Crestview police advised residents to stay off the streets, closing major roadways including Highway 85 and PJ Adams Parkway. The Okaloosa County Sheriffs Office and city police warned people about the risk of skidding on ice and encountering inexperienced drivers. The storms effects hurt small business owners like Tucker, whose homecleaning business lost appointments and income as North Okaloosans hunkered down, she said. The like-new prefabricated skate park equipment, including ramps and lighting, was put in place by a government agency that then didnt want them, Public Works Director Wayne Steele said. Anthony Hemphill, whose family periodically donates equipment to regional municipalities, made the offer last week, and has extended tomorrows original deadline because of the storm, Steele said. City leaders, who would formally vote on the matter during a later public meeting, would have to approve stormwater management systems and electrical work for the proposed Twin Hills Park site and pay $55,000 to install the equipment. The park would be access-controlled by swipe cards issued after users signed waivers or, in the case of minors, had them signed by their parents, Steele said.CRA funding availableIn January 2013, a skate park and dog park were proposed as Community Redevelopment Agency-funded improvements. CRA money would be used for the citys match toward the Hemphills donation if approved, Steele said. Steele advised the council that changes in state statutes allow municipalities to classify skate parks as recreational facilities on par with sports elds and youth and adult athletic programs. Fear the unlived life. It sticks in my mind as I mourn the loss of Maudy Carper, a long-time Laurel Hill resident. Maudy, who died this past weekend, was a friend to many. But to me, she and her husband, Tom, the long-time love of her life, were aunt and uncle. My family lived next door to them when I was growing up. They were classmates at Laurel Hill School with my father and soon became close friends with my mother. Then again, Maudy was friends with anybody. She would welcome you in no matter when you dropped by for a cold drink on a hot day or something hot to eat on a cold one. If you needed help or wanted to hang out, she was the rst to volunteer. Maudy just loved people and was always surrounded by them. Last year, Maudy began to have health problems. Through her frequent hospital stays and various treatments, Tom and her loving daughter, Kim, along with countless other family and friends, stood by her side. This past year has been especially dif cult as we watched her inch closer to time to leave us. Now, she has joined other loved ones in heaven. Of course, we will greatly miss her but we nd comfort in knowing shes no longer hurting. Instead, shes watching over us from a better place. And, as the saying said, she lived life. Medicine program which includes lab work, community service opportunities and eld trips since 2003. Rachel was among 62 of SSTRIDEs latest middle and high school students inducted into the program during a Monday ceremony. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average, no disciplinary referrals, regular attendance and they must pass an application and interview process. Watching her grow up from a child to a woman and knowing that she is going into the (medical) profession it brings me joy, Franco Simon, Rachels father, said. I didnt have this opportunity growing up. I tell my children to seize the moment ... the sky is the limit. Shanice Bernard, a CHS and Davidson graduate, is learning just that. Shes studying at FSU pursuing a degree in the medical eld, for which she credits SSTRIDE. Being part of this program provided me with the support system that I needed, she said. Sponsors help support the support system, Penny Eubanks, SSTRIDEs Okaloosa County coordinator, said. North Okaloosa Medical Center stepped into fund the groups March eld trip to FSUs chemistry department, she said. But more help is needed. Okaloosa SSTRIDE needs the communitys help to fund 26 $250 scholarships for CHS seniors who complete the program, Eubanks said. Every year since we have had this class, we have given each (SSTRIDE) student a $250 scholarship, she said. These students will use this for college. Eubanks said her busy schedule prevented her from organizing fundraisers this year. However, this is something I would like to continue to do (for students), she said. The Helping Other People Effectively Network would establish transitional housing and a permanent shelter here, if it reaches its goals. HOPE leader Ann Sprague said she plans to meet with local bank ofcials to learn about foreclosed homes, although the organization would accept donations for a house and contractor services. Its the next step in helping needy North Okaloosa residents, she said. HOPE members gather monthly to coordinate soup kitchens and cold weather shelters. Representatives of Crestviews First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church in Crestview and the Journey Church said the need has increased. We can see it growing; of course, a lot of it has to do with the economy, Ed Kitchen, of First Presbyterian, said. Sean Peters, pastor at the Journey Church, said attendance at their soup kitchen has grown steadily since the service opened last May. We had around 30 (people), on average, and then in the summer we had an average of 90 to 100, he said. Since then the numbers have tapered off to around 75. Many individuals who visit the area soup kitchens are not homeless, Jo-An Williams, of First Presbyterian, said. The majority comes from people on a xed-income or (those using) food stamps, she said. Regardless of whom they help or how they help them, working together is crucial. I think this is so important for the community, Peters said. The fact that churches are working together in the community to make something happen every day of the week ... to feed people and bring them out from the cold, he said. Its a really good thing and I am excited that we are a part of it. HOPE is always open to gaining new members, regardless of religious af liation, Sprague said. Anybody is welcome, she said. We are trying to nd any opportunity to help the community. MATTHEW BROWN | News BulletinThe Helping Other People Effectively Network comprises representatives from several area churches. Bulldog junior point guard Jensis Coleman was at her best with the District 1-7A girls seminal basketball game on the line Thursday night. Coleman scored 13 of her game high 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bulldogs to a 51-42 win over Niceville at Fort Walton Beach High Schools Viking Gymnasium. Crestview (18-7) will meet Fort Walton Beach in the tournament championship game at 7 p.m. tonight at Fort Walton Beach. The win also assured the Bulldogs a spot in the state playoffs that start next week. Powered by six points from Coleman and four from Jasmine Middleton, the young Bulldog team jumped to a 13-0 lead six minutes into the game. At that point it looked as the equally young Eagle squad might be doomed. A Jessie Day basket followed by a Michaela Mitchell 3-pointer pulled Niceville to within 13-5 and gave the Eagles (1411) some much needed momentum. Jaci Hodskins scored six points in the second quarter to lead the Eagle charge as Niceville went on a 16-6 run. A pair of Hodskins free throws with 22 seconds left in the rst half gave Niceville its rst lead at 21-20. But the momentum swung back to Crestview when Bulldog freshman KK White hit a 3-pointer as the half ended, giving Crestview a 23-21 lead at the break. They got a little rattled and I just had to settle them down and tell them not to get back (down) and play our game, Bulldog Coach Kathy Combest. Nice-villes so big they did give us some problems, but we adjusted and regained our composure. We knew we had to beat Niceville to play Fort Walton again. And we to play Fort Walton to make it known that we are a basketball team too. Nicevilles zone defense bothered Crestview throughout much of the game, but the Bulldogs still found themselves on top 30-24 with just more than a minute left in the third quarter. Back-to-back Day 3pointers were followed by back-to-back scores by Hodskins as the Eagles ran off 10 unanswered points in a span of 76 seconds. Hodskins second basket of the run came 16 seconds into the fourth quarter and gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night at four points. Coleman and her Bulldog teammates then went to work using a pressure defense to grind out the win down the stretch. I feel like Crestview is coming back (to being a force in girls basketball), Middleton said. Thats all you can say. We always have to stay together. We might be down, but we can always come back. As long as we stay together and do what we are capable of well be OK. With 26 points, Coleman was the only Bulldog in double gures. White added nine points and Middleton eight in the win. Day topped Niceville with 16 points. Hodskins had 14 points and Mitchell scored eight. Bulldogs advance to nalsBy RANDY DICKSON682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com FORT WALTON BEACH While Crestview High School girls basketball Coach Kathy Combest preaches one game at a time to her players, she always thinks ahead. Long before the Bulldogs beat Niceville 51-42 in the District 1-7A tournament semi nals, Combest was preparing for the win and a showdown with top seed Fort Walton Beach in tonights 7 p.m. tournament championship game. It was no accident that Crestview (18-7) played at Fort Walton Beach on Jan. 11. That scheduling was part of Combests plan, as she knew the tournament championship game would be played on a Saturday at Fort Walton Beach. I didnt schedule us to play Fort Walton Beach at their place on a Saturday because it was the only date open, she said. I wanted to make it as real life as possible, thinking it was (the Vikings) who we were going to play (in the tournament championship). We knew coming into the tournament that this was the matchup we would probably get (in the nals). We had to beat Niceville (in the semi nals) to get Fort Walton, and we (had) to play Fort Walton again to make it known that we are a good basketball team too. Combest said Crestviews 73-66 win that night surprised some people. But the win also was another step in the growing process for a young Bulldog squad. That was an upset for us to beat them, but you dont want it to be an upset now, Combest said. We won it because we were ready to play. Thats what I want them thinking. We are going to play our game, play hard and let the cards be where they are. Combest believes the Bulldogs match up with the Vikings better physically than they did with the Eagles, but she said Fort Walton Beach has an advantage that cant be physically measured. They are fast and were fast, she said. We match up them (athletically), but Fort Walton is a very mature and established team. Win or lose tonight, the Bulldogs are headed to the regional quarter nals next week. And whatever the outcome of the game, Combest is simply looking for one thing. Crestview has never had that respect (as a basketball school), Combest said. Hopefully we will gain that respect.Bulldogs looking for respectNICK TOMECEK | Daily NewsCrestview High Schools K.K. One couple didnt welcome the downtime as cabin fever set in. Regina Hinesley went grocery shopping with her boyfriend, Derrick Patrick, and 4-year-old son, Colin, just to get some fresh air. Steele said Hemphill would accept a consensus up until the equipment, which is currently in Georgia, is crated and ready to be transported. I think a lot of people took the warnings (to stay home) to heart, Crestview Fire Chief Joe Traylor said. The public deserves a lot of the credit. Whether dealing with a hurricane or the rare Florida winter storm, Traylor said people typically know what to do. Residents use good common sense, especially when it concerns the safety of their families, he said. Crestview Police Chief Tony Taylor, who said many of his departments ofcers directed trafc away from dangerous roadways, agreed. Working with the citys police and public works departments in sanding down icy roadways was benecial, Traylor said. The cooperation and the communication between us was outstanding, he said. However, business was slow as most residents stayed indoors and off treacherous roads. We were able to staff with one window clerk the whole day, Crestview post master John Blair said. Home delivery, which depends on the mail truck delivering from the postal services Pensacola sorting facility, was affected, postal supervisor Jamie Cassidy said. With Pensacolas icy conditions and sections of Interstate 10 through Northwest Florida closed, Blair said the mail truck didnt come on Wednesday. It did come Thursday, but to reach Crestview, the driver had to travel U.S. Highway 90 with other diverted trafc, including multiple tractor-trailers that clogged the two-lane road between Milton and Holt. It was about two hours late, Blair said. Letter carriers reported to work as usual Wednesday morning to sort mail available for delivery, Cassidy said. Thursday home delivery reached most area addresses. We hoped to make 100 percent deliveries but obviously were not going to put anybody in an unsafe situation, Blair said. If the carrier encounters icy conditions, theyll have to turn back.BRIAN AN HUGHES | News BulletinIce covers a tree outside the Crestview post ofce Wednesday morning. Historic storm closes schools, businesses and streets CLARK BARROW | Special to the News Bulletin Ice covers blueberry buds in Baker. By BRIAN HUGHES and MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbBrian @cnbMatthew brianh@crestviewbulletin.com, matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Today’s forecasted high is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a significant change for Northwest Florida residents who just Wednesday awoke to frozen plants and white streets. “I know better than to go out on icy roads,” Crestview resident Janice Marcus said. In the Sugar Creek neighborhood, where the temperature was 22 degrees Fahrenheit, Dee Skinner said her sons Michael, 10, and Jimmy, 15, went for a walk with their dad, Jim. “The boys loved it!” she said. In Laurel Hill, where morning temperatures were three degrees lower, April Tucker said she and her husband, Todd, huddled around a space heater. And ate cookies — “a lot of cookies,” she said. “It seems like good winter comfort food.” Crestview police advised residents to stay off the streets, closing major roadways including Highway 85 and PJ Adams Parkway. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and city police warned people about the risk of skidding on ice and encountering inexperienced drivers. The storm’s effects hurt small business owners like Tucker, whose homecleaning business lost appointments — and income — as North Okaloosans hunkered down, she said. The “like-new” prefabricated skate park equipment, including ramps and lighting, was “put in place by a government agency that then didn’t want them,” Public Works Director Wayne Steele said. Anthony Hemphill, whose family periodically donates equipment to regional municipalities, made the offer last week, and has extended tomorrow’s original deadline because of the storm, Steele said. City leaders, who would formally vote on the matter during a later public meeting, would have to approve stormwater management systems and electrical work for the proposed Twin Hills Park site and pay $55,000 to install the equipment. The park would be access-controlled by swipe cards issued after users signed waivers or, in the case of minors, had them signed by their parents, Steele said. CRA funding available In January 2013, a skate park and dog park were proposed as Community Redevelopment Agency-funded improvements. CRA money would be used for the city’s match toward the Hemphills’ donation if approved, Steele said. Steele advised the council that changes in state statutes allow municipalities to classify skate parks as recreational facilities on par with sports elds and youth and adult athletic programs. The Florida League of Cities includes skate parks SPECIAL TO THE NEWS BULLETIN Prefabricated skateboard park equipment, such as these shown in an unidenti ed community park, has been offered to Crestview. “We’re getting $175,000 of equipment for $55,000. Syklawer and Kumar wed I once read this saying: “Life is meant to be lived — not feared, sold nor sweated. Fear not death. Fear the unlived life.” It sticks in my mind as I mourn the loss of Maudy Carper, a long-time Laurel Hill resident. Maudy, who died this past weekend, was a friend to many. But to me, she and her husband, Tom, the long-time love of her life, were “aunt and uncle.” My family lived next door to them when I was growing up. They were classmates at Laurel Hill School with my father and soon became close friends with my mother. Then again, Maudy was friends with anybody. She would welcome you in — no matter when you dropped by — for a cold drink on a hot day or something hot to eat on a cold one. Of course, we will greatly miss her but we nd comfort in knowing she’s no longer hurting. Instead, she’s watching over us from a better place. And, as the saying said, she lived life. Medicine program — which includes lab work, community service opportunities and eld trips — since 2003. Rachel was among 62 of SSTRIDE’s latest middle and high school students inducted into the program during a Monday ceremony. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average, no disciplinary referrals, regular attendance and they must pass an application and interview process. “Watching her grow up from a child to a woman and knowing that she is going into the (medical) profession — it brings me joy,” Franco Simon, Rachel’s father, said. “I didn’t have this opportunity growing up. I tell my children to seize the moment ... the sky is the limit.” Shanice Bernard, a CHS and Davidson graduate, is learning just that. She’s studying at FSU pursuing a degree in the medical eld, for which she credits SSTRIDE. “Being part of this program provided me with the support system that I needed,” she said. Sponsors help support the support system, Penny Eubanks, SSTRIDE’s Okaloosa County coordinator, said. North Okaloosa Medical Center stepped into fund the group’s March eld trip to FSU’s chemistry department, she said. But more help is needed. Okaloosa SSTRIDE needs the community’s help to fund 26 $250 scholarships for CHS seniors who complete the program, Eubanks said. “Every year since we have had this class, we have given each (SSTRIDE) student a $250 scholarship,” she said. “These students will use this for college.” Eubanks said her busy schedule prevented her from organizing fundraisers this year. However, “this is something I would like to continue to do (for students),” she said. The Helping Other People Effectively Network would establish transitional housing and a permanent shelter here, if it reaches its goals. HOPE leader Ann Sprague said she plans to meet with local bank ofcials to learn about foreclosed homes, although the organization would accept donations for a house and contractor services. It’s the next step in helping needy North Okaloosa residents, she said. HOPE members gather monthly to coordinate soup kitchens and cold weather shelters. Representatives of Crestview’s First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church in Crestview and the Journey Church said the need has increased. “We can see it growing; of course, a lot of it has to do with the economy,” Ed Kitchen, of First Presbyterian, said. Sean Peters, pastor at the Journey Church, said attendance at their soup kitchen has grown steadily since the service opened last May. “We had around 30 (people), on average, and then in the summer we had an average of 90 to 100,” he said. “Since then the numbers have tapered off to around 75.” Many individuals who visit the area soup kitchens are not homeless, Jo-An Williams, of First Presbyterian, said. “The majority comes from people on a xed-income or (those using) food stamps,” she said. Regardless of whom they help or how they help them, working together is crucial. “I think this is so important for the community,” Peters said. “The fact that churches are working together in the community to make something happen every day of the week ... to feed people and bring them out from the cold,” he said. “It’s a really good thing and I am excited that we are a part of it.” HOPE is always open to gaining new members, regardless of religious af liation, Sprague said. “Anybody is welcome,” she said. “We are trying to nd any opportunity to help the community.” MATTHEW BROWN | News Bulletin The Helping Other People Effectively Network comprises representatives from several area churches. Compiled by Matthew Brown By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com FORT WALTON BEACH — Don’t look now, but Crestview High School’s girls basketball team is playing for the District 1-7A championship. Bulldog junior point guard Jensis Coleman was at her best with the District 1-7A girls seminal basketball game on the line Thursday night. Coleman scored 13 of her game high 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bulldogs to a 51-42 win over Niceville at Fort Walton Beach High School’s Viking Gymnasium. A pair of Hodskins’ free throws with 22 seconds left in the rst half gave Niceville its rst lead at 21-20. But the momentum swung back to Crestview when Bulldog freshman KK White hit a 3-pointer as the half ended, giving Crestview a 23-21 lead at the break. “They got a little rattled and I just had to settle them down and tell them not to get back (down) and play our game,” Bulldog Coach Kathy Combest. “Nice-ville’s so big they did give us some problems, but we adjusted and regained our composure. “We knew we had to beat Niceville to play Fort Walton again. And we to play Fort Walton to make it known that we are a basketball team too.” Niceville’s zone defense bothered Crestview throughout much of the game, but the Bulldogs still found themselves on top 30-24 with just more than a minute left in the third quarter. Back-to-back Day 3pointers were followed by back-to-back scores by Hodskins as the Eagles ran off 10 unanswered points in a span of 76 seconds. Hodskins’ second basket of the run came 16 seconds into the fourth quarter and gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night at four points. Coleman and her Bulldog teammates then went to work using a pressure defense to grind out the win down the stretch. “I feel like Crestview is coming back (to being a force in girls basketball),” Middleton said. “That’s all you can say. “We always have to stay together. We might be down, but we can always come back. As long as we stay together and do what we are capable of we’ll be OK.” With 26 points, Coleman was the only Bulldog in double gures. White added nine points and Middleton eight in the win. Day topped Niceville with 16 points. Hodskins had 14 points and Mitchell scored eight. Bulldogs advance to nals By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com FORT WALTON BEACH — While Crestview High School girls basketball Coach Kathy Combest preaches one game at a time to her players, she always thinks ahead. Long before the Bulldogs beat Niceville 51-42 in the District 1-7A tournament semi nals, Combest was preparing for the win and a showdown with top seed Fort Walton Beach in tonight’s 7 p.m. tournament championship game. It was no accident that Crestview (18-7) played at Fort Walton Beach on Jan. 11. That scheduling was part of Combest’s plan, as she knew the tournament championship game would be played on a Saturday at Fort Walton Beach. “I didn’t schedule us to play Fort Walton Beach at their place on a Saturday because it was the only date open,” she said. “I wanted to make it as real life as possible, thinking it was (the Vikings) who we were going to play (in the tournament championship). ”We knew coming into the tournament that this was the matchup we would probably get (in the nals). We had to beat Niceville (in the semi nals) to get Fort Walton, and we (had) to play Fort Walton again to make it known that we are a good basketball team too.” Combest said Crestview’s 73-66 win that night surprised some people. But the win also was another step in the growing process for a young Bulldog squad. “That was an upset for us to beat them, but you don’t want it to be an upset now,” Combest said. “We won it because we were ready to play. That’s what I want them thinking. “We are going to play our game, play hard and let the cards be where they are.” Combest believes the Bulldogs match up with the Vikings better physically than they did with the Eagles, but she said Fort Walton Beach has an advantage that can’t be physically measured. “They are fast and we’re fast,” she said. “We match up them (athletically), but Fort Walton is a very mature and established team.” Win or lose tonight, the Bulldogs are headed to the regional quarter nals next week. And whatever the outcome of the game, Combest is simply looking for one thing. “Crestview has never had that respect (as a basketball school),” Combest said. “Hopefully we will gain that respect.” Bulldogs looking for respect NICK TOMECEK | Daily News Crestview High School’s K.K. One couple didn’t wel come the downtime as cabin fever set in. Regina Hinesley went grocery shopping with her boyfriend, Derrick Patrick, and 4-year-old son, Colin, just to get some fresh air. They were “stuck in the house” so they bought lottery tickets, Hinesley said. Jerry Summerlin took the weather all in stride. “I love it,” he said. “I have worked off-shore near Alaska before, so this is not that bad.” sS KATE from page A1 under a municipality’s gen eral insurance policy, Steele said. “We’re getting $175,000 of equipment (with instal lation) for $55,000,” Council man Tom Gordon said. “I think it’s ridiculous if we let this go.” “I am very much in agreement to accept some thing like this if we have a guarantee the equipment is what he says it is,” Council man Joe Blocker said. Gift horse or Trojan horse? “Be cautious, please, that a gift horse is not a Trojan horse in disguise,” Miller said. “Our systems are in place to protect cost and product.” While City Clerk Betsy Roy said city purchasing guidelines require the proj ect to be sent out for bid, Steele said his research found the city could never nd skate park equipment for $55,000. Steele said he would do more research into the con dition of the equipment and the Hemphill family’s dona tions to other communities. Steele said Hemphill would accept a consensus up until the equipment, which is currently in Geor gia, is crated and ready to be transported. “I hope we can work it out with the family and make it happen, because it would be so sad if we couldn’t,” Steele said. “We may have time to work out an answer for them.” By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — A few mi nor trafc accidents and down power lines were the only dangers asso ciated with this week’s sleet storm, public safety ofcials said. “I think a lot of people took the warnings (to stay home) to heart,” Crestview Fire Chief Joe Traylor said. “The pub lic deserves a lot of the credit.” Whether dealing with a hurricane or the rare Florida winter storm, Traylor said people typically know what to do. “Residents use good common sense, especial ly when it concerns the safety of their families,” he said. Crestview Police Chief Tony Taylor, who said many of his depart ment’s ofcers directed trafc away from danger ous roadways, agreed. Working with the city’s police and public works departments in sanding down icy roadways was benecial, Traylor said. “The cooperation and the communication be tween us was outstand ing,” he said. However, business was slow as most residents stayed indoors and off treacherous roads. “We were able to staff with one window clerk the whole day,” Crestview post master John Blair said. Home delivery, which depends on the mail truck delivering from the postal service’s Pensacola sorting facility, was affected, postal supervisor Jamie Cassidy said. With Pensacola’s icy conditions and sections of Interstate 10 through Northwest Florida closed, Blair said the mail truck didn’t come on Wednesday. It did come Thursday, but to reach Crestview, the driver had to travel U.S. Highway 90 with other diverted traf c, including multiple trac tor-trailers that clogged the two-lane road between Milton and Holt. “It was about two hours late,” Blair said. Letter carriers reported to work as usual Wednes day morning to sort mail available for delivery, Cas sidy said. Thursday home delivery reached most area addresses. “We hoped to make 100 percent deliveries but ob viously we’re not going to put anybody in an unsafe situation,” Blair said. “If the carrier encounters icy conditions, they’ll have to turn back.”BRIAN AN HUGHES | News Bulletin Ice covers a tree outside the Crestview post ofce Wednesday morning. Despite the weather, local letter carriers were prepared to deliver residential mail if it arrived from Pensacola. Crestview post ofce opens despite wintry weather “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers,” is the U.S. Postal Service’s unofcial motto.
