CRESTVIEW — The Campiones would have been homeless after Saturday, their deadline to move out of a mobile home they had been living in rent-free. But the day before eviction, Debbie Campione found hope. “I went on Craigslist Friday and saw an ad for a three-bedroom house,” she said. “The owner said she had just put this house on there 30 minutes before I saw it.” For two months, Kathleen Bowman and her son, Phil, had been letting Campione, her daughter, Crystal Pryor, and Pryor’s ve children live rent-free in a mobile home the Bowmans owned on Lee Avenue. Debbie Campione stands on the deck of a Lee Avenue mobile home she and her family recently vacated when the property was sold. BRIAN HUGHES | News Bulletin Laurel Hill living nativity set for Dec. 7 By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com LAUREL HILL — A Dec. 7 “journey to Bethlehem” won’t take visitors over an arduous desert trail like the one followed 2,000 years ago. But it will help attendees experience more personally the wondrous drama that unfolded before Jesus’ birth, organizers of the fourth annual Laurel Hill Living Nativity said. The Living Nativity, which runs from 6-8:30 p.m. will accommodate visitors who also want to attend the 5:30 p.m. Crestview Main Street Christmas parade, the Rev. Mark Broadhead said. “Families can enjoy the fun of the Main Street parade (and) then ‘follow the star’ to Laurel Hill to experience the spiritual side of Christmas,” Broadhead said. “We’re only a 16-minute drive north of Winn-Dixie.” As guests follow a candlelit path around the historic 1905 Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church’s yard, they will encounter actors portraying the holy family. New to this year’s program are the three wise men, Broadhead said, who join Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, King Herod and an Imperial Roman census worker. Fellowship and refreshments follow each visitor’s journey. As the event grows, Laurel Hill and Crestview Presbyterian church members who produce the program welcome help from other denominations’ members, organizers said. This year, students and adults from First Baptist and Magnolia Baptist churches of Laurel Hill and Live Oak Baptist and the First United Methodist churches of Crestview will perform roles and help run the event. Adams Parkway-Antioch Road corridor could begin providing traf c congestion relief in less than 10 years — and without raised taxes — if local and county governments support a tax increment nancing proposal. Attendees at a Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce panel discussion Monday evening learned that the plan, known as a TIF, could even be in place within a year. Panelists described the virtues of a TIF, which is funded by establishing a baseline and allocating the difference between the baseline and future tax increases to a speci c project. “A TIF is a tool for nancing something that you need for the public good,” Okaloosa Economic Development Council Vice President Kay Rasmussen said. “People assume (that) because ‘tax’ is in the name, it’s a new tax, and that is not what it is.” Designated by law Money raised in the TIF district, which would encompass all of the county north of the Eglin reservation, would by law be only used for the corridor, Crestview city planner Eric Davis said. “We must tell the public this is not a new tax, and it will not get raided by future (county) commissions for other projects,” Davis said. At attorney Mike Chesser’s urging, Davis and other of cials began looking into the TIF concept as a means of raising local matching dollars to attract federal and state road money. “If the TIF can grow to $40 or $50 million, then we can come to the table for the next grant the federal government has and we can say, ‘Come on: We have the plans, we have the land — give us the money,’” Davis said. A few years ago, Railey Conner and her family attended a church service with her great-grandmother, Roxie Buchanan, a Carrington Manor resident who has Alzheimer’s disease. Afterward, the child wondered who was responsible for taking other Carrington Manor residents to church. “I had to explain to her that some (residents) don’t get that,” her mother, Angie Holland, said. Instead of celebrating her birthday on Dec. 15, Railey decided to collect items for senior citizens at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The ultimate goal was to “share the love” with them during the winter holidays, she said. Railey’s Birthday Project is now in its third year. In 2012, residents donated toiletries, blankets and slippers, among other offerings. Railey and her friends made gift bags, which she gave to residents at Carrington Manor, Safe and Secure Respite Care, Crestview Manor and Silvercrest Manor. Railey says it’s important to remember that Christmas is for more than children. “Thinking about kids during Christmas is great, but everybody does that,” she said. “These people (senior citizens) used to be our teachers, pastors or nurses,” she said. “These are people we used to look up to. Even though we may not cross paths (with them) as often as we used to ... we still need to think about them.” Railey and her mother are looking for more locations to set up collection bins for the project. As of this printed edition, the First Baptist Church of Holt (532 U.S. 90, Holt), the Crestview News Bulletin of ce (705 Ashley Drive, Crestview) and Freedom Tax Services Plus, Holland’s employer (417 Stillwell Blvd., Crestview), are the only locations. Community FROM STAFF REPORTS CRESTVIEW — Pinnacle Pointe Apartments staffers hope they can help Christmas shoppers during the complex’s Thursday night Holiday Vendor Extravaganza. The event will take place 7-9 p.m. inside and outside the complex’s clubhouse, 1000 Patriot Lane, Crestview.. “We will have 25 different vendors,” event organizer Shay Saloane said. “It’s a good time to shop and network with other vendors.” Vendors will include Mary Kay and Pampered Chef, among others, Saloane said, adding that the public is invited and refreshments will be available. While adults network and make Christmas gift selections, children can play in an in atable bounce house or make a stuffed animal in the Create-a-Critter area. MATTHEW BROWN | News Bulletin Railey Conner, 12, kneels beside a collection bin at First Baptist Church of Holt. Conner seeks the community’s help in collecting gifts for senior citizens at area nursing homes. Eglin Parkway construction ends Construction work has concluded on a $6.9 million Eglin Parkway (State Road 85) improvement project. The project included resurfacing Eglin Parkway between 12th Avenue in Shalimar and U.S. 98 in Fort Walton Beach, and repairs to the Cinco Bayou and Garnier Bayou bridges. Other work included drainage system replacement in Shalimar, sidewalk construction, safety improvements at the Eglin ParkwayHollywood Boulevard intersection and traf c signal upgrades along the Eglin Parkway corridor. Emerald Coast bikers net $15,000 following 34th annual Toys 4 Tots Run The 34th annual Toys 4 Tots Run raised an estimated $15,000 following the Nov. 17 event, organizers said. About 500 motorcyclists — bikers from the Sandollar Motorcycle Club, the Harley Owners Group, The Vietnam Vets/Legacy Vets and the Euro Knights, along with individual riders from Pensacola, Navarre and Mossy Head — participated in the event, which kicked off in Fort Walton Beach. After a 15mile ride, which included a cruise past the Northwest Florida Regional Airport, the group nished in Niceville at the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival grounds. “Annually, the event raises about $15,000 (and) another $10,000 value in toys and more with gift card donations,” said Gene Large, the Harley Owners Group Emerald Coast Florida chapter’s membership of cer and head road captain. The club — along with sponsor Heritage Cycles Harley Davidson in Fort Walton Beach — organized the event. Donations went to Toys 4 Tots, Children in Crisis and the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. Crestview husband: Much to be grateful for after wife’s near fatal crash CRESTVIEW — While many North Okaloosa residents were celebrating Turkey Day on Thursday, one family gave thanks all week. It was a new tradition for Kimberly Koehler and her family. Almost three months ago, Kimberly was declared “dead on arrival” at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola after being pulled from her destroyed PT Cruiser. She was heading home to Crestview from cleaning condominiums on Okaloosa Island early Sept. 8 when she was hit by a Ram pickup truck. Kimberly’s injuries included a broken pelvis, a broken left leg and left arm, a shredded diaphragm and internal bleeding from damaged organs. She was in a coma for three weeks and initially couldn’t remember her family, but eventually recognized photos of her daughters, 12-year-old Elizabeth and 13-year-old Haley. Every day, she heals a bit more from her critical injuries, including shortterm memory loss from head trauma. Despite the challenges, the family tries to stay positive. There’s no point in complaining, her husband, Jay, said. He still has his wife; their children still have a mother. ON THE WORD STREET (Prized purchases include) a Dell laptop and a Kindle Fire HD for less than $300. Total ordeal? Less than two hours. Total money saved? Over $250. And our Christmas shopping is done. Totally worth it for us. Lani Cook These nightmarish big box stores make enough pro t. Scarlet Doherty Nope. There was way too much confusion, and the deals really weren’t worth the lines, plus all the pushing and bumping involved to get what one wanted. Erica Asble Did you do anything for Black Friday? Crestview Main Street Association’s annual Christmas Parade should go off without a hitch, based on residents’ reactions from our article on new restrictions. (See crestviewbulletin.com/news/ community if you missed that story in Saturday’s edition.) The parade was frontpage, “above-the-fold” news last year for reasons that organizers and most readers wouldn’t prefer. A Pensacola preacher from Save Me from the Fire Ministry used his platform in the procession as a bully pulpit — pun intended — to shout inappropriate things through a bullhorn. If you were there, you recall the re-and-brimstone, anti-gay and antiSanta Claus remarks, which ignited residents’ ire. Neither the comments, nor the tone, were appropriate for a public, non-denominational and family-friendly event. I had to pen a few columns on this because of the initial incident, which seemed antithetical for a Christian who shouldn’t judge; the fallout after some residents bullied the preacher, who had to close his Facebook page; and Save Me from the Fire’s seemingly fanning the ames, as its home page displayed disparaging comments about Crestview. It was a mess; Main Street of cers knew that and said they would take steps to ensure things go more smoothly this year. They delivered. First, the parade application states, “The only audio to be broadcast by entrants is Christmas music.” That’ll help ensure history doesn’t repeat. And I enjoy editorial cartoonist Ryan Massengill’s depiction of this new rule. But I digress. (Something I do often in this column, if you’re a regular reader!) Perhaps the next best thing on Main Street’s list is coordinating with CSX representatives to ensure no trains interrupt the event. And organizers are stopping parade entrants from stopping at the reviewing stand and otherwise causing traf c jams. These steps, among others discussed during a mandatory meeting last night for representatives of parade participants — another wise move — are encouraging. I’d like to think they ensure that Crestview’s 2013 parade will be memorable for all the right reasons. Find out on Saturday, when the procession begins at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Crestview. What’s your view? Eddie Lehneis, of the Crestview Police Department, said. While some shoppers wandered uncrowded aisles, the largest group chatted in line in the electronics department, awaiting the 8 a.m. sales “event.” The chain started its sales earlier than before, beginning with a 6 p.m. round of bargains Thanksgiving evening, but some shoppers said they weren’t interested. “We just sat bloated on the couch after (Thanksgiving) dinner,” Crestview resident Teri Summers said. “My son and his wife came all the way in from Ohio. I wasn’t going to leave them to go ght the crowds.” Still, Wal-Mart regional manager Jon Kurpil said, the store considered the 6 and 8 p.m. sales a successful start to the holiday shopping season. “The 6 p.m. event was the busier of the two, which we anticipated,” he said. “All indications by the customer traf c ow showed it was very successful.” Laurel Hill resident Cathy Steele did her early Christmas shopping Friday morning. Among goodies in her basket was a red radio-controlled truck for her son Christopher. “I saw the last one of them so I snagged it,” she said. “I said, ‘I’m not going to let that get away.’ My little one is going to be so happy.” While Steele examined a display of plush throws, Neisha Smith, DeAuna Moorer and Mikayla Lee waited near the front of the line for the 8 a.m. electronics sales. “We’re second in line for the iPhone,” Smith said. Steele said she appreciated the relative calm of Friday morning’s shopping experience and didn’t feel she missed anything the night before. “I haven’t started the midnight (shopping) thing,” she said. “I’m not that slap-happy.” BRIAN HUGHES | News Bulletin Cathy Steele pushes a basket loaded with potential Christmas presents — including the last radiocontrolled truck on the shelves — on Friday at the Crestview Wal-Mart. Joining adults in the kitchen helps kids learn about foods. Most 4-H cooking projects explore the science, nutrition and history of cooking while promoting healthy eating and resource management. Of course, safety comes rst. Follow these tips: • Have supervision, and never allow kids to cook without asking for permission. • Tell children cleanliness is good. They should keep hands and surfaces clean, and children with long hair need to tie it up. • Ensure kids don’t wear loose clothing that can catch on re. After setting safety rules, help youths identify — and know how to safely use — common kitchen tools including knives and other sharp objects. Ditto for hot items such as a broiler, toaster, stove or microwave. Teach kids about measuring methods and demonstrate how to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. We certainly don’t want foodborne illnesses coming our way. Help kids read directions and follow recipes. They should ensure they have all their ingredients before beginning a cooking project. If the project requires cutting skills, start simple with something soft like a banana and a plastic knife. Demonstrate the technique and have them try the actions. And when working with knives — you guessed it! — safety comes rst. Lay down these ground rules: • Cut with caution • Focus on one task at a time • Never point a knife at a person • Always hold the knife by its handle • Use a cutting board • Go slowly Next, demonstrate how to wash produce and handle meat safely so you do not have crosscontamination of foods. Above all, help kids nd what it is about cooking that excites them! Recipes for snacks, side dishes, main dishes, quick breads and desserts are great starters. Thank you to Paula Davis, Bay County 4-H youth development agent, and the Northwest District Volunteering in the Panhandle Newsletter for this information on food and nutrition. Parents who have seen the creativity pour from their children — Abrakadoodle art classes are available at Bob Sikes, Antioch and Riverside elementary schools — have been requesting classes for themselves. Some have ventured down to Destin to take adult art classes, Abrakadoodle owner Erin Bakker said. Abrakadoodle and Simply Pink Boutique are offering Christmas art parties at which adult students will make Christmas-themed decor, Bakker said. “I think it’ll be a good opportunity to expand that kind of programming to Crestview, because we don’t have any adult classes there,” she said. The rst class, 6-8 p.m., will offer instruction in making mixed-media angels on wood panels. Classes cost $30 per person and include materials. Subsequent classes are the next two Wednesdays at the same times. Simply Pink is at 451 Ferdon Blvd., Crestview. Call 423-7750 or 855-5375 for more information. Local businesses have pledged a combined $140,467 in gift certi cates for the auction. Bidding for each gift certi cate will start at 50 percent of its actual value. Bidding ends Dec. 8. The program is designed to promote local businesses while minimizing the cost to them, Talla said. Last month, the Bowmans sold the lot to Habitat for Humanity and had to remove the mobile home by the beginning of December to close on the property. Campione was informed of the sale at the time so her family could begin looking for a new home, Phil Bowman said. “We went under contract with Habitat for Humanity. Just the timing was bad,” Bowman said, with Thanksgiving occurring just two days before the family had to move. Nitsi Bennett, president and chief executive of cer of the regional Habitat for Humanity of ce, said the organization was not responsible for the family having to move. “(The Campiones) knew that the house was sold,” Bowman said. “They were only supposed to be there until they found someplace else.” The Campiones also received an eight-day notice before eviction. Helping hands When Campione found the Chestnut Avenue home listed online, Bowman helped the family move. “We paid their deposit for the new place, and we gave them a trailer to move their stuff,” he said. Campione said she and Pryor have begun applying for one of the Habitat for Humanity houses planned in Crestview and are gathering necessary nancial documentation. “There could a oneto twoyear waiting list, they told me,” Campione said. “I said that’s ne, as long as we get our name on there.” Bowman said he and his family are glad the story had a happy ending and were pleased they could help Campione and her family. “Habitat and the Bowmans are just in the business of helping people,” he said. The proposed traf c corridor project would include widening P.J. Adams and Antioch to four lanes from State Road 85 to U.S. Highway 90. A recently state-approved alternative route would branch off at Arena Road for northeastbound traf c, allowing westbound traf c to Holt and Baker to follow the existing route. Ready in a year The project’s expected cost is $120 million. A University of West Florida Haas Business Center study shows a TIF could raise $47 million in matching funds in 20 years. Construction actually could begin well before the TIF expires, using its future funds as collateral to raise bonds to nance the corridor. TIFs are already successfully in place in several county communities, including Crestview’s Community Redevelopment Agency district, Former Elections Supervisor Pat Hollarn said. Davis said a draft TIF ordinance has been prepared and, if approved, could be in place by the next scal year. Whenever I read about a Division I college football coach being red, I question my career choices. What would have happened if I pursued coaching instead of writing sports? Would I have had what it takes to reach the top of the profession and demand the major bucks top coaches and assistants make? I asked myself those questions again over the weekend after the University of Florida head coach red Gator offensive coordinator Brent Pease. Pease reportedly was making $600,000 a year, had two years left on his contract and will be paid $1.2 million to leave the Florida program. It amazes me that Pease — who in two seasons coached offenses that nished in the bottom quarter of big-time football programs — is still walking away with his pockets full of cash. You could argue that Pease should return part of his salary to the university after the Gators nished dead last in total offense in the Southeastern Conference this season, and 112th in offense of a 123 Bowl Championship Series teams. In the real world, if someone doesn’t do their job, they get red. In rare cases, they might get a month’s severance pay. In the world of college athletics, if a coach is red, he gets the remainder of his contract. Some coaches, such as former Tennessee men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl, can break the rules, be red and still walk away with a nice check in their pocket. It’s not uncommon for football and men’s basketball coaches at major universities to receive a sevengure buyout when their teams underachieve. Former Tennessee football Coach Derek Dooley — who never had a winning season in his three years in Knoxville — walked away with a settlement that paid him $5 million not to coach UT. Dooley is now an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys, making NFL money to supplement the money he’s receiving from Tennessee. Only about 30 or 40 of the elite athletic departments with powerful booster clubs can afford to throw away that kind of money. Schools such as Troy or South Alabama pay their coaches well compared to the average salary most of us make. But those schools won’t empty the bank to pay a coach not to come back. By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Saying that Crestview High School girls basketball Coach Kathy Combest has a varsity team of Diaper Dandies is no exaggeration. Arianna Simms is the lone Bulldog senior. Jensis Coleman and Diaza Williams are juniors. The rest of the varsity includes sophomores and freshmen, with six of the nine being freshmen. Simms and Coleman are the only returning varsity players from last season. “Jensis is a junior and Arianna is a senior — and that is our experience,” Combest said. “Everybody else is a JV or middle school player. Nobody else played on my varsity last year except those two.” Having such a young team can be frustrating at times for a perfectionist like Combest. But the frustrating games quickly turn into learning experiences. “They (new players) have a lot to learn,” Combest said. “It’s just the little things. They didn’t know a lot of things about footwork and defense. “We spent about a week and a half working on defense, blocking out and doing those little things. If you can’t play defense, you’re not going to win because you’ve got to make some stops.” As might be expected of a young team, the Bulldogs got off to a rough start, dropping three of their rst four games. Crestview lost the season opener to Choctawhatchee, 49-34. The Bulldogs picked up a District 1-7A win against Navarre, 72-32. In that game, Coleman recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 steals and 10 rebounds. Simms, KK McTear and Christa Johnson turned in double-doubles against the Raiders. Simms had 10 points and 10 rebounds. McTear had 19 points and 10 steals. And Johnson had 16 rebounds and 10 steals. Crestview dropped a pair of games last week in the Chickl-A Classic that was played at Choctaw. Crestview fell behind early against the Indians, and never could catch Choctaw. But the Bulldogs outscored Choctaw 29-21 in the second half behind a strong effort from McTear. Combest took the loss in stride. “We are still learning,” she said. “We have to learn how to guard the big girl (Choctaw’s Nadia Fingal). We have to learn how to guard what I call the Tennessee offense, where they run picks and double picks. www.crestviewbulletin.com Wednesday, December 4, 2013 B Page 1 Section INSIDE More local news S PORTS NORTH END ZONE Randy Dickson Big bucks not to coach Coach: Crestview girls young, but athletic Jensis Coleman will play point guard for Crestview High School’s girls basketball team this year. The Gators trailed the Bobcats 4140 heading into the nal period. But the fourth quarter was a different story, as Paxton pulled away to a 6745 win. “We nally got the guys in there and got our rhythm,” Bobcat Coach Jeff Bradley said of his team’s fourthquarter explosion. “We were just trying to nd some chemistry early with some different guys in the lineup. “It was a little smaller lineup than we usually put out there, but once the game went on, we got our rhythm going. It was good learning experience for us.” William Anderson scored 24 seconds into the game, giving Paxton (50) its rst lead of the night. Baker answered with six straight points on a Richard Stroheker free throw, a pair of free throws by Austin Martin, and a 3-point basket by Brooks Taylor. The rst quarter went back and forth between the teams and ended with the squads tied 12-12. An Austin Carnley 3-pointer, with 12 seconds gone in the second quarter, sparked a 10-0 Bobcat run. Taylor’s second 3-pointer of the night, with 3:20 left in the rst half, closed the Bobcat lead back to seven points, but Baker (1-3) couldn’t make up any ground the rest of the quarter as Paxton led 30-21 at the half. The Gators came alive in the third quarter as Justin Morgan hit two quick 3s. When Taylor bagged his third bucket of the night from beyond the arch, the game was tied 30-30. Paxton regained the lead on Grant Stewart and Zach Varnum’s back-toback baskets. Baker came right back with a 3-pointer by Austin Hicks and a basket by Stroheker. The teams traded baskets in the third quarter’s closing moments. A three-point play by Hicks off a steal gave Baker a 40-39 lead with 17 seconds left in the third quarter, but the lead didn’t last long. Stewart scored with four seconds left in the quarter, putting the Bobcats in front for good. Stewart’s basket started a 10-0 run that carried into the fourth quarter. An Anderson basket early in the fourth quarter was sandwiched between a pair of Stewart 3-pointers. B2 | Crestview News Bulletin Wednesday, December 4, 2013 “We missed 11 free throws and several easy layups. We have to play a little harder at the end. We just have to get everybody to play with intensity.” The Bulldogs lost to Niceville 60-59 in their nal game of the tournament after leading the Eagles 39-24 at the start of the second half. Once again, missed free throws were a problem as Crestview missed 11-of-26 shots from the line. “We played lazy,” Combest said. “Underneath the basket, we didn’t block out for rebounds. And we didn’t hit our free throws.” The tough losses are symptomatic of Crestview’s youth and inexperience. “We’ve got a lot of people young and trying to ll in some spots,” Combest said. “I think they are going to do it. “We are athletic. We’ve got some speed, but I think it’s going to take a little time.” Combest isn’t too concerned about the short term, but she does have some goals for the latter part of the season. “We are just trying to teach them as much as we can right now,” she said. “We are trying to get them as many games as we can to get them some experience before the district (tournament). We’re not really worried about what our record is during the regular season. “We are just hoping the couple of juniors and seniors we have will help the freshmen come along. We have to make them believe they can do it and make them do it by being athletic. “I tell them that every day and to ‘bring your athleticism with you.’” 2077822 Gun Show February 23rd & 24th Ft. CRESTVIEW from page B1 Still, it’s nice to think about what might have happened if I had gone into coaching, made it to the top of a big program and then been red. I think I could live off a multi-million dollar buyout. But when you consider how few coaches make it to an elite program, you probably have a better chance of returning a missed Alabama eld goal for a touchdown to win the Iron Bowl than you do landing one of the big jobs. There are only about 40 elite programs with boosters in place to write a check, or series of checks, that equal $4-$5 million. Most college athletic programs struggle to stay above water nancially, as the only teams that make money are usually football and men’s basketball. At some schools, such as Louisiana State, Florida State or South Carolina, baseball is a break-even or money-making sport. Some schools even make a little money off women’s basketball, but those schools are the exception to the rule. I know all the numbers and comprehend the realities, but it doesn’t hurt to dream. It’s just too bad that dream check isn’t real. Randy Dickson is the Crestview News Bulletin’s sports editor. Email him at randyd@ crestviewbulletin.com, tweet him @BigRandle, or call 682-6524. BAKER from page B1 basket completed the run that was only interrupted by a Martin free throw for Baker. Martin’s free throw ended a Gator scoring drought that lasted more than four minutes. By the time Morgan scored again for Baker, the Bobcats were up 57-43 and had the game well in hand. Gator assistant Coach Daniel Batson said the coaches were proud of the way Baker battled and kept things close the rst three quarters. “I honestly think it was a game of emotions,” Batson said. “For 24 minutes (the rst three quarters), we frustrated them and took them out of rhythm. “We played about as near perfect basketball as we could play. They (the Bobcats) somehow, some way turned their anger for the rst three quarters into forcing us to make mental mistakes, and they took off.” Batson said the rst three quarters showed that the Gators are capable of staying with a talented, well coached team. “We played our best IQ game of the season,” he said. “For 24 minutes, I can’t be more proud of the way we executed our game plan. It is very frustrating to know that for the last eight minutes it wasn’t the game plan, but the emotions of the game that got us.” Stewart brought consistency for the Bobcats on his way to a game-high 26 points, scoring 13 points in the rst half and 13 in the second half. Carnley added 18 points and Anderson nine points. Morgan topped the Gators with 15 points. Taylor pitched in nine. Hicks scored eight and Stroheker seven. The Okaloosa Citizens Alliance and the AfricanAmerican Community Leaders Alliance sent letters questioning why a committee recommended continuing the district’s 10-year relationship with L3 Communications instead of using Edcovation LLC, which would cost about $1 million less per year. Edcovation, a new joint-venture company, challenged the recommendation in early November. Bob Schmidt, the company’s vice president, said the committee noted Edcovation was capable, just like L3, of providing and maintaining technological equipment and hardware for the district. The company led a letter of protest and the two organizations now want answers from school of cials. The contract has not been awarded yet. Of cials haven’t spoken publicly about the issue because School Board policy doesn’t permit it when a contract is challenged, School Board attorney Jeff McInnis said. If they can’t reach an agreement, an administrative hearing with a judge in Tallahassee is held. The judge will make a “recommended order” and the School Board, acting as a quasi-judicial body, will make a nal recommendation. After that, either side can take the issue to the 1st District Court of Appeals. The Citizens Alliance and Community Leaders Alliance noted they didn’t want to see the issue go to court, but urged the School Board and district of cials to explain the recommendation. CRESTVIEW MOM CONTINUES EFFORTS TO GET CAMERAS ON SCHOOL BUSES Money is the only thing standing between Crestview resident Tina Bannon and school bus cameras she spent the last month pushing to install. It will cost an estimated $1,800 per bus to install three cameras on the 83 vehicles without them. Earlier this month, Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley joined the School Board in pledging money for the project. Right now, the district has set aside about $42,000; Ashley anticipates he’ll contribute between $25,000 and $40,000. Undeterred, the Crestview mother is planning fundraisers, including a beauty pageant, to close the gap. But money isn’t the only factor; school of cials are also looking at privacy issues, according to Cindy Frakes, the board’s vice chairwoman. Bannon hopes to meet with school district of cials after the holidays to nd out what it will take to get volunteer monitors on all the buses. NEW PARENT ORGANIZATION SETS THURSDAY MEETING Two Northwest Florida moms involved in the newly formed Parents Together Okaloosa County will have a meet-and-greet at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Buffalo Wild Wings in Fort Walton Beach. In early October, Crestview resident Tina Bannon posted on Facebook looking for other parents who were dissatis ed with the lack of cameras on school buses. Soon after, she urged the School Board to take a hard look at school bus safety. Fellow parent Maureen Dunlevy didn’t hesitate to get involved, and hopes the group can look at ways parents can help reduce bullying. It will focus on positive issues, too, Bannon said. Bannon and Dunlevy have created a Facebook page; see www.facebook.com/groups/ parentstogetherokaloosacounty for more information. By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com BAKER — New pastor Jim Vail plans to strengthen First Baptist Church of Baker’s congregation in their faith and reach out to area residents in spiritual need. “My goal right now is to build (church members) up spiritually ... to where they are (spiritually) strong and they can disciple to new believers,” he said. That’s crucial, given the country’s state of faith, Vail said. “Our nation is in trouble,” he said. “You can’t talk about Jesus Christ in public without offending someone. When times get really bad, I want our people to remain faithful in Jesus Christ.” Vail, who became the church’s full-time pastor in August, said community outreach is key. “We will go to different homes in the community and introduce ourselves to people and ask them if they have any prayer requests...,” he said. Vail and long-time church member Sam Brunson, who recently became a deacon, said the church is not looking to “steal” members from nearby churches. Rather, “We want to encourage others to be faithful to their church,” Vail said. “We want to reach people who don’t know the lord and lead them to Christ.” JIM VAIL New pastor hopes community outreach can help ‘nation in trouble’ www.crestviewbulletin.com

Holt woman’s family still seeks justice after 1998 death HOLT — The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office cold case files include the report of Jewel Summerlin Melvin’s mysterious death. She was a second mother and confidante to friends and family. On May 15, 1998, the 71-year-old’s family noticed her car was missing from her Crestview home’s carport. Hours later, Melvin’s son discovered her body in her home. Her car was found three days later in Holt. It took a few months for her cause of death — strangulation — to be released. A decade later, investigators confirmed she also was brutally beaten. Fifteen years later, no one has been arrested. Melvin’s house sits abandoned. Its caved-in roof and overgrown bushes are a constant reminder of the aunt who baked an amazing coconut cake and wouldn’t let you start your meal without praying, family members said, adding they hope justice will be served. Anyone with information on this cold case is asked to call Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Investigator Mike Irwin, 6517400, or Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers, 850-863-TIPS. Man says he might have said he’d cut somebody CRESTVIEW – A man faces a Dec. 10 plea date after he allegedly attacked his child’s mother and her stepfather, lawmen say. Julius Martello Wilks, of Crestview, got into a physical altercation with the woman, witnesses told an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputy. When the woman’s stepfather tried to intervene, Wilks allegedly punched him in the head. Wilks denied fighting with anyone, but said he might have said he would cut the stepfather. He didn’t have a knife. The woman said there was no fight, but multiple witnesses supported the stepfather’s story. Wilks had a prior domestic violence conviction so this charge amounted to a felony. M ILITARY From Staff Reports VA reports phone marketing scam The Department of Veterans Affairs is alerting veterans of a marketing scam targeting callers trying to reach the VA National Call Center at 1-800-827-1000 or the GI Bill Call Center at 1-888-442-4551. Fraudulent phone numbers that are one digit off the VA’s actual numbers have been set up. The answering party at the fraudulent numbers offers callers a gift card and tries to obtain personal and nancial information, including credit card details. The person may even transfer the caller to the VA after obtaining the caller’s information. The fraudulent phone numbers are 800-872-1000 and 888-442-4511. The VA — which never asks for credit card information during a telephone call — noti ed law enforcement of cers about the situation. Veterans Park to stay mostly natural OKALOOSA ISLAND — A walking path and a repaired bridge could be coming to Veterans Park by next spring. Okaloosa County commissioners have approved the rst phase of amenities planned for the 15-acre natural area behind the Emerald Coast Convention Center. The site — home to a heron rookery, wetlands, coastal dunes, a pine and oak hammock and drainage ponds — will stay “as natural as possible,” Commissioner Dave Parisot said. Public Works will begin working on the walking trail that will wrap around the lake on the property and allow people to “utilize the existing acreage,” County engineer Jason Autry said. The path will tie into the parking lot at the Convention Center. Workers also are expected to start repairing the bridge over the lake. Restrooms, water fountains and a monument recognizing the county’s veterans are expected to be added in later. By THOMAS BONI and MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbeditor @cnbMatthew tboni@crestviewbulletin.com matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Keith Lewis, owner of Lewis & Co. Jewelers, says shuttering the business he has operated here for more than 20 years has been an emotional process. I have seen generations (of customers) come through this store, he said of the North Ferdon Boulevard business he grew from 875 to 5,000 square feet. His departure wont be easy on his customers, either. Lewis & Co. ... is more than a jeweler; theyre friends, Nancy Sparagowski, of Crestview, said. (Lewis daughter,) Rachel Lewis Russell, and Keith have provided personal assistance and their time without you ever feeling like they have other customers. We have been doing business with Keith and all his co-workers ever since he started in the jewelry business, Lee Ann Julius said. Their customer service is excellent, and no other business can even come close ... I just hate seeing them go. They seem like family and they also treat you that way. Sad to say that this is the last Christmas we both will be getting jewelry. Keith had the best selection, prices and people working for him. (We) will not be satis ed doing business anywhere else. Such sentiments would atter Lewis, but still, its time to retire, he said. I have decided within the last year that I am just tired, he said. I have actually been working since I was 10 years old; I am just at the point in my life where I am ready to slow down. And to move on. Lewis isnt just closing shop; hes also leaving Florida. Instead of dealing in diamonds and gold and displaying humorous, memorable billboards to attract people to the store Lewis will be hunting, shing and spending time with his grandchildren in Gantt, Ala. Still, the decision is bittersweet, he said. I know I will miss everybody, Lewis said. I have made thousands of friends in the 20 years I have been here. And not just from business, Sparagowski will tell you. Keith has been a part of the community in everything from (being) the Spanish Trail Cruisers Poker Run sponsor to Relay For Life to assisting my sons one through Boy Scouts and becoming an Eagle Scout, and one with raising funds for his People-to-People Ambassador trip. The stores 11 employees, including family members, have already made plans for life after Lewis & Co., Keith Lewis said. Joey Tinklepaugh, Lewis son, plans to open a jewelry repair and design shop. Russell plans to spend more quality time with her children. For now, the store is selling off remaining merchandise, including engagement rings and mens and womens watches. Everything is marked down, up to 70 percent off, Lewis said. Its going to go fast, so if people want to buy for Christmas, they need to get in here, he said. No close date has been set, but Lewis said the store would be open after the holidays, even if all the merchandise is sold and its just to assist customer needs including ring-size adjustments. Just because I am closing doesnt mean I dont love my customers, he said.
