www.crestviewbulletin.com 50¢ By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — The newly formed Crestview Civitan Club will kick things off with a charter ceremony Thursday at Coach-N-Four Steakhouse. The ceremony will feature the installation of club of cers including President Gloria Jones, Presidentelect LuAnne Ellison and Treasurer Brian Spicer. The local club will become part of Civitan International and will belong to the Alabama-West Florida Civitan District. Jacque Hawkins, the district’s 2012-2013 governor, said the club aims “to build good citizenship.” “Civitan’s purpose is to serve the community,” she said, adding that the group meets human needs — particularly for developmentally disabled residents — unmet by other organizations or individuals’ efforts. The club’s 20 members want to assist in any way possible, whether that means funding a wheelchair ramp’s construction or donating clothing, Jones said. In addition, members plan to award a $1,000 John Simpson Memorial Scholarship to an outstanding junior or senior student in the Crestview area. Simpson was a longtime member and contributor to the district’s Hilltop Civitan Club. The scholarship comes from his dream to recognize young people who display high morals and practice good citizenship. By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Community members touring the Okaloosa Correctional Institution on Tuesday learned the facility has several costconscious, environmentally green initiatives. It’s well known that inmate service crews working for the county’s municipalities save those cities money, but warden John Willis said the facility does so much more to stretch taxpayers’ dollars. The National Down Syndrome Society’s Buddy Walk is Oct. 26 in DeFuniak Springs. CRESTVIEW — Benjamin Shea, at 13 months old, is pretty much like any other toddler. “He laughs the same, he cries the same, he teethes the same,” said Benjamin’s mother, Stefanie Shea. “He has the same stubborn streak as his brother and sister.” But Benji, as his family calls him, has Down syndrome. Stefanie and her husband, Chris, knew Benji was going to be special when prenatal screenings came back positive for the genetic disorder that affects development. “We knew we were going to be blessed,” Stefanie said. Though life is as routine in the Shea household as it was when Benji’s 2-year-old brother, Logan, was his age, there are a few extra challenges, including physical therapy and other medical appointments, Stefanie said. Developer pulls out of Crestview Power Center project By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — The Crestview Power Center, a shopping mall planned for a site north of Lowe’s, is in limbo after its developer abruptly pulled out of the project, city of cials said. In June, representatives of Atlanta-based Watkins Retail Group said several national retail chains were eager to lease space in the mall. However, Mayor David Cadle said, “My understanding is Watkins pulled out because they discovered the property they were building on has reserved all mineral rights beneath the property.” A Louisiana development group immediately expressed interest in taking over the project but has not presented a formal proposal to the city. The Louisiana company wasn’t concerned about developing shopping centers on land beneath which other companies hold mineral rights, Cadle said. “They don’t have a problem with mineral rights being reserved because they’re from Louisiana, which has a lot of oil under peoples’ property,” Cadle said. Calls to Watkins’ Crestview attorney were not returned. Crestview of cials built partnerships with Watkins and other developers in the area to provide utilities for the planned site and explored ways of legally waiving some city impact fees if Watkins were to request them. Of cials said Watkins had not formally applied to the city for any waivers before withdrawing from the project. C OMMUNITY www.crestviewbulletin.com By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com DORCAS — The Dorcas Fire District invites the community to visit a haunted house beginning Oct. 25 at Fire Station 42. The haunted house — featuring re department volunteers and their children dressed in Halloween attire — will include spiders, clowns and a prison room. The attraction also will feature a cemetery with paranormal activity. It’s a scary setup, department volunteer Deb Winter said, adding that last year’s haunted house might have been too spooky for some. “Two people went home without their shoes,” she said. Proceeds will go toward refurbishing the department’s brush re truck, but the community’s enjoyment is the top priority, Fire Chief John Polinsky said. “We don’t have intentions to make money off of it; we do it so the kids have something to do,” he said. “It is for the children and the families in the community.” Several businesses — including Lowe’s Home Improvement Store and SherwinWilliams, which donated construction materials — have sponsored the event. Winn-Dixie has donated cookies. Crestview driver cited in I-10 crash MILTON — A Crestview woman was charged with careless driving after she overturned a vehicle on westbound Interstate 10 just west of Milton on Tusesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Stacey E. Bass, 38, of Crestview, was driving a 2005 GMC Envoy in the inside westbound lane when she tried to move to the outside lane, the FHP reported. Another vehicle was already in that lane. Bass overcorrected and the Envoy veered onto the grassy median. It overturned onto its roof and slid across the eastbound lanes onto the south shoulder of I-10, the FHP reported. Two passengers, 50year-old Natasha C. Davis and 18-year-old Haley E. Bass of Crestview, were taken to Santa Rosa Medical Center with serious injuries. Stacey Bass and a third passenger, 62-year-old Larry T. Bass of Crestview, had minor injuries. Campbell pleads no contest to perjury Former Okaloosa County Commissioner James Campbell has pleaded no contest to eight misdemeanor perjury charges. He will spend four years on probation and must perform 400 hours’ community service and pay a $4,000 ne, as well as cover investigative and court costs. Campbell, who served eight years on the county commission, was removed from of ce Sept. 17, 2012, the day he was arrested and charged with failing to report thousands of dollars in commissions he made selling sponsorships for Niceville’s annual Mullet Festival. Under state law, county commissioners must report any source of income that exceeds $1,000 to the Florida Commission on Ethics. In a written statement on Monday, Campbell said he had not broken the law, and wouldn’t have risked his reputation, career or the possibility of jail time for $14,250 over eight years. Campbell said he pleaded no contest because he couldn’t afford a protracted court battle that could cost him his savings, retirement, his health and his family’s well-being. Nine felony counts of of cial misconduct were dropped as part of the agreement, so Campbell should be eligible to keep retirement bene ts gained as a county commissioner and a city of Niceville employee for 38 years. Combining the three subjects into one fair helps each student nd something to enjoy, Principal Jeanine Kirkland said. “We have to have a little variety,” she said. “Our children are talented in different ways.” In the library, visitors had photos taken with Clifford, the Big Red Dog while selecting reading material at the Scholastic Books fair. Fourth-grader Bret Castille, who said he enjoys reading, thoroughly perused every bookladen table before making his selections. “I like to read ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ books,” Bret said, adding he has read most of author Jeff Kinney’s books. Third-grader Vince Lancaster couldn’t wait to show his mom, Petra Pistorius, the Egyptianthemed cat sculpture he made in art teacher Sarah Harris’s class. “That’s all gold spray paint,” he said, turning the golden work of art so his mother could admire it. Other art included decorated miniature sarcophagi, brightly colored pharaoh masks and paper mosaics. When Queen Cleopatra appeared, as portrayed by Kirkland, the ancient Egypt theme was complete. www.crestviewbulletin.com Section S PORTS By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — Tuesday was a Senior Night worth celebrating for Crestview High School’s volleyball team, who hosted West Florida High. Brittany Pase, Kristen Bufkin, Jasmine Middleton, Recie Brown and Molly Woodward led the team to a 3-0 win over Pensacola visitors with 25-15, 26-24 and 27-25. Middleton led the Crestview attack with 15 kills and nine blocks. Pase and Woodward also hit double gures in kills. Pase had 10, to go along with four blocks, three aces and two digs. Woodward had 14 digs and an ace. Bufkin pitched in nine digs, and Brown had seven digs. Seniors had help from their younger teammates. Molly Kitchen had 17 assists, three blocks, an ace and a kill. Cailey Ness had seven kills, eight blocks and two aces. Macie Adams had 16 assists to go along with two aces. Crestview (18-5) made things look easy in the rst set. Pase started in serve for the Bulldogs, who scored three quick points to start the night. Pase was serving when Ness delivered the match’s rst point with one of her seven kills. The Jaguars responded to the Bulldogs’ open salvo with a pair of points, pulling within one of the Bulldogs, but that was as close as West Florida got in the rst set. Crestview built up to its biggest lead, coming at 20-9 after a Middleton kill. The nal two sets were tenser; the Jaguars refused to go down without a ght. In the second set, the Bulldogs scored three quick points. But the Jaguars came back and tied at 5-5. Every time the Bulldogs tried to pull away, the Jaguars came clawing back into the set. Crestview led 24-22 after a Kierra Potts kill, and needed just one point to take the set, but West Florida scored twice to tie the set, forcing the teams to play until one of them took a two-point lead. An unforced Jaguar error put Crestview up 25-24, and Pase sent home a kill to nish off the set. Things didn’t look good for the Bulldogs early in the third set as West Florida raced to a quick lead. The Jaguars led 10-5 and 15-10 as Crestview struggled to keep pace in the set. Middleton’s back-to-back kills seemed to awaken the Bulldogs from their slumber and sent them on a 17-10 run, closing out the match. Each district’s top two teams qualify for the playoffs. Baker School’s squad, which opens play on Tuesday in the District 3-1A tournament at Chipley, seeks an 11th straight district championship and a 21st consecutive trip to the playoffs. The Gators will play the winner of Monday’s match between Jay and Chipley. The nals are 6 p.m. Thursday at Chipley. Baker’s Gators have won the last 10 district championships and have made back-to-back trips to the state nal four. Gator Coach Tomikko Parks is counting on seniors Alex Roy, Jordan Linzy, Hana Wadsworth and Miranda Whatmough to lead the team through another playoff run. But “the most important thing that we can do is concentrate on playing our game,” Parks said. “We have seen what everybody has. We know what they are going to do, and we just have to make sure we do what we need to do.” Crestview High School hosts the District 1-7A tournament and opens play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Fort Walton Beach in the tournament semi nals. A win will give the Bulldogs their rst playoff appearance since 2004. The tournament nals will be 7 p.m. Thursday. Bulldog Coach Kathy Combest didn’t want to look too far ahead as the tournament approached, but she said Niceville is the team to beat going into the tournament. “I don’t want to speculate about the tournament,” she said. “We are playing good right now, and we don’t want to focus ahead until it is tournament time. I just talk about what we have to do and take care of what we do. If we do what we can do, we’ll come out on top.” Laurel Hill School has clinched a spot in the playoffs by earning the top seed in the three-team District 1-1A. The Hoboes will play the winner of the Central-Bethlehem match at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem as they go for their rst district title since 2005. They were last in the playoffs in 2008. Laurel Hill Coach Kent Zessin said his team will be focused even though the Hoboes have secured a playoff spot. “I’ve seen them so many times throughout the year just sort of get better each match,” he said. “They are going to be able to go out there and not get rattled. “We will play our game. And if we play our game, we will be tough to beat.” Area schedule TODAY High school cross country Crestview at Okaloosa County Meet, 8 a.m. at Eglin Golf Course TUESDAY High school volleyball District 3-1A tournament, at Chipley: Baker vs. winner of Chipley vs. Jay, 6 p.m. District 1-7A tournament, at Crestview: Fort Walton Beach vs. Crestview, 6 p.m. Freshman football Crestview at Niceville, 6 p.m. Reporting news, calendar items and story suggestions The News Bulletin welcomes stories and announcements for the sports calendar. Volleyball teams prep for districts Mustangs charge into title game By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW — There were more than bragging rights on the line Thursday as Davidson Middle School’s football team faced cross-town rival Shoal River Middle School at Crestview High School’s Jack Foster Stadium. The game was the Okaloosa County Middle School football semi nal game, and the winner would punch its ticket to the county championship game. As was the case in their regular-season meeting, Shoal River took the win 35-6. Shoal River will face Bruner in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Walton Beach High School’s Steve Riggs Stadium. Shoal River Coach Ryan Gillis was ready for the rematch with a Bruner team that beat the Mustangs earlier this year and in last year’s championship game. “(The win over Davidson) feels pretty good now, but you are never satis ed until you win the last one,” he said. “You will have a bad taste in your mouth if you don’t win the last win. We are excited to be in it, but we are certainly not satis ed. We are not going down there just to play the game. We are going down there to win it. We are going to be prepared, play hard and see how it turns out.” The Mustangs lived up to their wild horse moniker as they ran wild, picking 339 yards rushing on 35 carries. Kenny Whaley led the charge with 140 yards on 13 carries. Mondreus Flavors added 66 yards on 10 carries. Shoal River (7-1) struck rst as Flavors capped a 71-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard run to the end zone that came with 3:29 left in the rst quarter. Quarterback Kalee Ciurieo added the 2-point conversion and the Mustangs had a lead they would never relinquish. Turnovers were a major issue for the Panthers, who nished the season with a 5-3 record. Three of Shoal River’s scores came off Davidson miscues. The rst of two interceptions by Bobby Sanders set up the second Mustang touchdown. Two plays after the Sanders’ interception, Whaley turned on the afterburners on his way to a 58-yard touchdown run with 6:31 left in the second quarter. The Panthers picked up their only score of the game late in the second quarter when Rod Bouchard connected with Keon Voisin on a 9-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown came after the Panther defense held the Mustang offense to force a punt. The snap on the punt was low and Davidson recovered the ball at the Mustang 10. Three plays later, Bouchard and Voisin teamed up for the score. Shoal River wasn’t content with an 8-point lead at the half. Tyree Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Mustang 40. A pair of runs by Whaley netted 11 yards as the clock ticked to less than 30 seconds remaining in the half. The Mustang coaching staff then reached into its bag of tricks and called a reverse to Jay Stanton. Stanton raced to the Davidson 15-yard line. Shoal River spiked the ball to stop the clock with less than 10 seconds left in the half. Ciurieo then hit Terrelle Holiday with a 15-yard strike. Whaley took the ball in for the conversion, pushing the Mustang lead back to 16 points at the half. Davidson showed it could move the ball in the second half, but again turnovers raised their ugly heads. The Panthers had the ball at the Mustang 36, but Davidson fumbled and Shoal River’s Darius Sylvester picked up the fumble and returned it to the Panther nine, setting up Flavors’ second score of the game with 3:22 left in the third quarter. The Panthers had the ball deep in Mustang territory at the start of the fourth quarter, but Sanders’ second interception of the night kept Davidson off the scoreboard. Jay Stanton picked up Shoal River’s nal touchdown when he scored on a 24-yard run with 4:31 left in the game. Cody Traywick kicked the extra point. The Panthers managed just 38 yards rushing on 22 carries. Vincente Turner led Davidson in rushing with 23 yards on six carries. Rodderrick Skinner had 18 yards on seven carries. Bouchard threw for 82 yards for the Panthers. Voisin had two catches for 56 yards. “We had a 5-2 regular season,” Panther Coach Chris Small said, “but we got beat by a better team (Thursday). I’m going to miss this eighth-grade group.” TOP: Mustang running back Mondreus Flavors powers his way into the end zone for game’s rst score Thursday.
