Special to the News Bulletin DESTIN Women from across the Emerald Coast traveled to Silver Sands Premium Outlets March 22 for Purses with a Purpose, an event bene ting Shelter House, the domestic violence center serving Okaloosa and Walton counties. More than 130 people attended the Friday night VIP party to bid on designer handbags from Big Buddha, Coach, Kenneth Cole, DKNY and more. More shoppers attended Saturday to buy remaining purses at deeply discounted prices. The event raised more than $7,800 to support programs and services such as a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, child therapist, group counseling and violence prevention classes. Since its inception, Purses with a Purpose has brought in over $33,000 for critical services, Michelle Sperzel, Shelter House executive director, said. The best thing about this event is that it is women helping women. All funds raised at Purses stay right here in our community and help women and children who could be your neighbors. Shelter House event organizers thanked Silver Sands Premium Outlets, Carrabbas Italian Grill, Winn Dixie, Sams Club and Bon Appetit for their support. By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW An upright piano sitting by John King Road excited the interest of passing neighbors in the Cherokee Bend subdivision this week. However, unlike the grand piano that appeared on a sandbar off the coast of Mary Esther earlier this week, there was little mystery surrounding the southeast Crestview instrument. Emily Sanders, the owner, simply wanted it out of her house. The piano which bears no manufacturers name is about 50 or 60 years old. Sanders knows little else about it, except, its very, very heavy, and has three or four years of dust and dirt in it. Sanders said her sonin-law was originally going to put the piano out by the road several years ago, but her son wanted it for his own son to take piano lessons. My son kept saying hes coming to get it, hes coming to get it. I nally gave him an ultimatum: Come and get it or Im putting it out by the road. When a group of family and friends visited Sanders home for Easter dinner, she realized she had the moving crew needed to haul the instrument out of the house. With a free piano sign next to it, a passing motorist soon stopped to examine the instrument Tuesday evening, and promised to come back today with the labor and a vehicle to move it out of Sanders carport. She is just so excited. Her grandkids are taking piano lessons, Sanders said of the prospective owner. They stay with her a lot so now theyll have a piano to practice on. Its recycling with a purpose. Special to the News Bulletin FORT WALTON BEACH The Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Women will recognize 2013 honorees next month. FAITH Wal-Mart couldnt understand why somebody would offer to do something without getting something in return, she said. They couldnt comprehend it and I just gave up. But Walgreens jumped on it and said, Come here, come here! Dozer is now a monthly greeter at the drug store and customers love it, Nousiainen said. Good response Many residents know the friendly black-andwhite Great Dane from his visits to nursing homes and as a childrens reading dog at the Crestview Public Library. Now, every second Thursday, Dozer and Nousiainen greet customers inside the drug stores front door. Weve had a very good response, Ed Kiefer, the stores assistant manager said. We get a lot of people coming in and getting pictures with him. Having a greeter dog was a local arrangement, not something organized at the chains corporate level, Kiefer said. When an employee suggested bringing Dozer to the store, management was glad to try it. Dozer, who recently started his third year as a therapy dog, is certi ed with the nationwide Therapy Dogs Inc. Dozer had to pass four levels of obedience training at a local canine training facility and take a pretty strict test for certi cation, Nousiainen said. He also passed the American Kennel Clubs Canine Good Citizen course. A regular dog Most customers reactions have been positive, Nousiainen said. A lot of fans cant get to the library on Saturdays, or nursing homes arent open to the public, so this is another opportunity for fans to say hello to him, she said. However, once, a woman cruised through the drug stores door in a motorized wheelchair and surprised Dozer, who jumped in Nousiainens lap for comfort. His anxiety was short-lived, she said, and provided an opportunity to add power chair training to Dozers repertoire. The woman and him became best of friends in about two minutes, Nousiainen said. She describes Dozer as de nitely a people person, though when hes not letting a child read to him, visiting a nursing home or greeting his fans at Walgreens, he is a dog. When hes not working, hes a regular dog laying around the house doing regular dog stuff. People react differently to adversity. Some folks feel overwhelmed and give up, thinking they will never overcome the struggle. Some folks face problems head on and move forward with a new vision and courage. We see examples of this quite often in the news. Many wartime military personnel return home injured. Some give up; others accept what has happened and move forward. Many of these people may be just names or faces to a grateful nation. Still, they are human beings, with titles like son, daughter, husband, wife, father and mother. Celebrities facing hardships might attract particular attention. In 1995, actor Christopher Reeves career was cut short by a fall from a horse that paralyzed him neck down. What did he say? Dont give up. Dont lose hope. Dont sell out. Those who can develop a positive outlook can recognize that what used to be normal isnt anymore. A new normal, embraced with ferocity, instills inspiration. Dont ever give up. Sometimes, you may want to throw in the towel, turn around and walk away. Sometimes, you may feel hopeless when things around you seem bleak. Sometimes, you may want to sell out, give up or do whatever you want, regardless of the consequences. However, remain strong. Tomorrow is a new day. Gods blessings are all around you, even when you dont feel them. It takes just baby steps to move forward. Being willing to do so shows there is hope. And where there is hope, you will hold on to what you know is right. Remember Psalm 27: The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. Im hoping we will do pretty good, said Wilder Kersey, 17. I have never done anything like this before, but this is actually pretty cool. Kersey and classmates were working on a rub ber band plane for the competition. I really enjoy building things, plus I get to do it with my friends, he said. Emily Taylor, 17, and her brother, James, 16, were working together on their craft stick bridge. We have been working on it since early March, she said. I think we are going to do good. IDEAS is part of the science, technology, en gineering and math, or STEM, curriculum, which gives students a handson approach to learning about engineering, math ematics and design. Burlison said she is impressed by the dedica tion students put into their projects while balancing regular schoolwork. This team is un like any other, she said. These kids are involved in other school activi ties, like sports, ROTC and drama. They try to do everything. COMPETITION from page A1 She fully deserves this award, he wrote. She has been a leader in STEM education in our school by sponsoring sev eral competitive engineer ing and robotics teams, co-sponsoring a STEM club, teaching two middle school STEM electives, and excelling as a phys ics and advanced math teacher. She has logged many extra miles to serve our students who have inter ests in science, technolo gy, engineering and math. She helps make learning fun. For instance, Burlison created a murder mystery, in which students must use physics knowledge to solve the crime. I am one of those kooky teachers, she said. I try to keep it entertaining. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Hurl burt chapter, Burlison will receive a $250 donation. The school will receive the same amount as a grant. Burlison plans to use the money toward her classroom, which she said could use an iPad. The tablet would further stu dents technology-based education. She also will receive a one-year membership to the AFA, which includes a one-year subscription to Air Force Magazine and full access to the organi zations many resources. The local AFA could link area teachers to Air Force personnel who could come to the school and speak to the students. As a chapter, we rec ognize elementary, middle and high school teachers, said John Jogerst, a Hurl burt ofcer. We recognize these teachers who impact their students. By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.co m LAUREL HILL Paxton Schools Grant Stewart and Laurel Hills Boomer Simmons took the mound in a battle of lefties Tuesday as the Hoboes hosted the Bobcats in a renewal of their District 1-1A baseball rivalry. The rival duo combined for 23 of the games 29 strikeouts, with Stewart having the upper hand, fanning 13 batters as Paxton rolled to a 9-0 win. Stewart struck out the side in the second, third and fth innings. Simmons struck out 10 Bobcats, half of them on called third strikes, in ve innings of work. Stewart and Paxton relievers Dustin Geoghagan and Marcus Bradley combined for 15 strikeouts while holding the Hoboes to just one hit. The Bobcats managed 10 hits, but three of their nine runs were earned. The energy level just isnt where Paxton and Laurel Hill has been in the past, Bobcat coach Jeff Bradley said. I think thats because both teams are so young. Both teams are trying to nd our place. Weve been able to ght and claw and get some seeing-eye singles. Its better to have a win like this than it is to have a pretty loss. Paxton (11-0, 6-0) struck early, scoring a pair of runs in the rst inning. Stewart led the game with a base hit. He moved to second on a sacri ce bunt by Forrest Whibbing. Goeghagan was hit by a pitch. Stewart and Geoghagan scored as Kaleb Newborn and Bradley were safe on errors. Paxton pushed the lead to 5-0 with three more unearned runs in the fourth. Geoghagan had the innings big hit, a two run double to score Stewart and Whibbing. Austin Carnley, who led the inning with a base hit, scored as Whibbing was safe on a Hobo error with two outs. Paxton added another run in the fth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Stewart led the Bobcat attack with three hits and two runs scored. Geoghagan had a pair of hits and two runs scored. Carnley had two hits. Jayce Davis had the lone Laurel Hill hit, a lead-off single in the fth. I guess spring break affected us the wrong way, Laurel Hill coach Ronnie Smith said. When you just get one hit, youre not going to beat Paxton. Boomer always gives us a chance. I still like this baseball team. The guys didnt hang their heads, and they kept battling. We still have eight games before district tournament to get better. By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.co m CRESTVIEW Taylor Rolison scored on a sacrifice fly off Kelsie Dardons bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Crestview High School softball team a 2-1 win over Larue County Ky., on Thursday. Rolison led the inning with a walk, ending the evening for Hawk starting pitcher Kayla Skaggs. Emillee Cundiff replaced Skaggs in the circle. Rolison stole second and took third as pinch hitter Taylor Henderson grounded out to the circle for the innings first out. Dardon then took a twostrike pitch to center field to score Rolison. Skaggs and Crestviews Kristin Bufkin seemed to match each other pitch for pitch most of the game. Bufkin, who went the distance in the circle for the Bulldogs in picking up the win, struck out five Hawk batters while allowing just four hits and one run. Skaggs gave up five hits and the costly walk to Rolison that turned into the game-winning run. She was accurate, Bulldog coach Kathy Combest said of Bufkin. She was hitting spots outside and inside. She was on it tonight, and she did a great job. Larues only run came in the fourth inning. Bridgitte Skaggs led the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She scored on a Courtney Johnson double, giving Larue a 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs (15-8) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Dardon singled with one out to get things started. Bailey Estep entered the game as a courtesy runner for Dardon, the Crestview catcher. Estep stole second and took third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a Kayla Kelch base hit up the middle. The Bulldog defense committed two errors one in the sixth inning and one in the seventh but both times Crestview erased the mistake with a double play. Kelch was the lone Crestview player with two hits. Dardon, Rolison and Gabby Thomas had the other Bulldog hits. They did a good job, Combest said. I thought our defense, after playing Niceville we kind of got down on ourselves. But we are making the plays better. We fumbled a couple, but they are thinking the game rather than standing there waiting for stuff to happen. They did a great job base running. Thats what Im trying to get out of them: to think the game the whole time, and play the ball before it comes to you. Dardon powers Crestview to 2-1 win They did a good job.
