By BRIAN HUGHES 682-6524 | @cnbBrian brianh@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW An award-winning home chef has added a feather to her toque. Sherri Williams, who won Crock-Pots Crockin in the USA contest in December, started last weekend on a high note with a phone call from NBC. Someone from the Today show called, she said. I had entered the Chicken Wing Cook-Off. She gave me a call and told me I was one of the three winners. Ill be going up there on Jan. 31 for a live airing on Feb. 1. The contest which the daily morning chat show ran Jan. 8-16 called on cooks to submit their favorite chicken wings recipes. Williams was among three winners selected for the trip to New York to share her recipe with a live national audience. She wont be entirely among strangers. The good thing about it is one of my foodie friends is one of the other winners, she said. After ying into New York, Williams will attend a rehearsal the afternoon of Jan. 31. The live show will be the next morning. Because she wont do the actual cooking, she had to ensure the recipe was precise. Reason enough to cook up another batch of wings just to be sure, she said. Their food stylists are going to do the actual preparing of the wings, Williams said. The recipe has to be exact when someone else is making them. If I was doing it, I could tweak them a little. Justice Livingston, 10, attended President Barack Obamas second inauguration on Monday, capping a weekend of sightseeing, witnessing history unfold, and ful lling a long-time dream. Justice on Christmas Eve received an envelope full of materials from the White House, including a letter from the president, following a letter she wrote to Obama in November. Council chair Larry Hendren, following a city auditors advice, suggested using funds from the citys unreserved account. I think there is enough money to isolate $83,000 (from the $199,572 account) and start on some road repair business, he said. The account received funding last year through reimbursements, Hendren said. Such credits are undependable or unlikely to recur, and these funds may not be easily replenished, Councilman Robby Adams said. It is money we will not be able to count on every year, he said. We are not going to get an insurance claim of $29,000 or a Gulf Power refund for $37,000 (every year). More dependable is a $30,000 state allocation the city annually receives from fuel tax revenue. The city had been using fuel tax money to pick up roadside debris, against Florida statute, Mayor Joan Smith said. We are not supposed to be paying for it (debris pickup) out of that fund. Now, we are going to have to take it out of another fund, she said. Road construction and maintenance, and purchase of transportation facilities, are within the statutes allowances. Council members suggested opening a checking account to track how the money was being spent on road maintenance. The council recently sent a letter to Okaloosa County commissioners requesting assistance with repaving unspeci ed roads. The city would cover the cost of asphalt, while the county would be responsible for paving the roads, under the proposal. City leaders sent the letter to Public Works Director John Hofstad, who could bring it before the board of commissioners, Hendren said. There is no expected date to hear a response from the commissioners, he said. WANT TO GO? The Laurel Hill City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 7 at City Hall, 8209 State Road 85. By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Earlier in life, Masuko Gartman created hundreds of paintings that appear in private and public collections in the U.S. and abroad, particularly Japan, Canada and France. These days, the 82year-old, who can barely speak, lives at Carrington Manor in Crestview, where she uses a wheelchair and receives care for her declining health. Masuko is one of 15 patients whom Sara Tyler, a registered nurse and Covenant Hospice case manager, visits per week. Tyler gives a head-to-toe assessment of each patient, verifies medication amounts, informs patients and their families about illnesses, and coordinates with physicians and pharmacies. Covenant Hospice, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, continues its tradition of comforting some 6,000 terminally ill patients and their families in Florida and south Alabama. Our mission is to ensure our patients live as fully and comfortably as possible, accepting all patients, regardless of the ability to pay, its website states. We go to wherever the patients are; that includes nursing homes, homes and hospitals, Tyler said. Its a mission that the Gartman family appreciates, having received Covenants care before. They did a great deal for us before our son passed away, Billy Gartman, Masukos husband, said. Anything we needed, they were there for us anytime. We didnt have to ask for anything ... It couldnt have gone any better. Eddie, the couples son, died from pancreatic cancer in 2005 at age 48. No words can express how I felt. It was like the end of the world, Billy, 81, said. Masuko took the loss of their son the hardest. To be honest, I dont think she ever got over it, he said. It could be part of the reason she is in here. Earlier in life, Masuko honored Eddies 20-plus years in the U.S. Navy with Night Fighter, a painting displayed in the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Mississippi. She did some portraits, but seascapes seemed to be more of her liking, Billy said. Generosity and philanthropy accompanied her artistry. She donated a painting of waves crashing on a sand dune beach to Carrington Manor. In addition, she frequently donated her artwork to the annual Cox Cablethon, which auctions items donated from local businesses to benefit Covenant Hospice. She would set up during the show and paint, Tyler said. It would be marvelous just to see her sit there and create a masterpiece. Masuko has been Tylers patient for the past two weeks. In that time, the two have grown close. She always has a smile when I come to visit, Tyler said. Its very rewarding for me to help people in the community, she said. The key ingredient to Williams Asian scorpion pepper jelly wings is Uncle Garys Gourmet Scorpion Pepper Jelly, bottled com mercially by Williams friend Gary Langer from his fathers recipe. It gives the wings a spicy kick, Williams said, adding she wondered whether Today hosts palates would be up to the challenge. I hope they realize theyre going to be spicy, she said. Theyre pretty darn good. You can enjoy the avor of the wing and then you get the heat in the back of your palate. Williams said her hus band, Roy, isnt fond of spicy food but agreed the wings were outstanding. Then the heat caught up with him. Oh baby, these are hot! she said he exclaimed. Theyre good anytime, though, even if youre just having a little function. Even if you dont want to use scorpion pepper jelly, you can use a mild pepper jelly. The avor is in the Asian spices. You can use any jam or jelly. At a recent get-together, Williams served three kinds of wings, including the Asian scorpion variety. Another style was nished with a blueberry glaze. Its a merlot with blue berry jam with blueberries, she said. You talk about good! The glaze was out standing! I marinated them overnight in blueberry bal samic vinegar. Williams said she named them Ray Day wings in hon or of Ray Lewis, a player for the Baltimore Ravens. Hes retiring this year and hes been doing so much for the game for them, she said. I thought I would dedi cate them to him, and they ended up winning. Williams, the manager of a Destin condominium com plex, said the NBC caller asked her how many recipe contests shes won. It was the rst time she actually had to stop and think about it. I never sat down and counted them, Williams said. It was like over 30 in less than 21 months. Most of those were won in 2012. I never realized how many Ive won. I thought, Oh good ness, Im the crazy contest maniac, but I gure Ive got to cook anyway so I might as well enter it in a contest. Cooking is my love and passion. I just enjoy do ing it more than anything, and thats the truth of the matter. I told him I am just like him, she said to the News Bulletin in 2009. My daddy is black, and my mom is white. Last weekend, Justices older cousins Libby Lewis-Reeves, Tawanah Reeves and Master Sgt. Tonya Lewis, Crestview natives living in other cities treated her to a weekend in the capital, where she could be closer than ever to her role model. However, the National Mall and the Inaugural Parade route were so crowded that Justice and her cousins couldnt actually see the proceedings. We couldnt see him (Obama), Justice said. But we could hear him. And we heard Beyonc sing. Singer Beyonc Knowles sang the national anthem during Mon days inauguration, but the ener getic crowd witnessing this na tional event particularly interested Justice as she and her cousins ap proached the U.S. Capitol. The rush of getting there and everybody pushing was exciting, she said. But the closer we got, everybody got happier. They (se curity forces) moved people into, like, little blocks. One big guy and his daughter came bouncing ev erybody out of their way. We just laughed at them. Pat Mosely, her grandmother, explained the little blocks were roped off stalls; each contained a certain number of spectators. Of cials using observation satellites could count the stalls to get an ac curate estimate of the crowd, which was at least 1 million people, ac cording to the politics website Po litico.com. During the trip, Justice climbed the Washington Monument. The iconic landmark was impressive even before she set foot in it, she said. It was wonderful just walking up to it, Justice said. The view was, actually, wow! She and her cousins also vis ited the National Museum of Af rican Art, and took pictures in front of government departments, including the Department of the Treasury. It was tiring with all the walk ing, Justice said. It was good to sit sometimes, but it was fun! Justice is already planning her return visit to Washington, D.C. She and her grandparents, with whom she lives, are planning a spring road trip to the capital, and she hopes to return with her cousins. In two or three months, we should be going back, Justice said. Now that shes attended the presidents second inauguration, shes drafting another letter to send to him. She wants to write to him and tell them she wants to meet all of them (the rst family) in the White House, Mosely said. Hopefully, well get a tour of the White House. Maybe then Ill get to meet President Obama, Justice said. Local 2084383 2084383 More than just news, Call Now to Subscribe! 850-863-1212 mmacleod@nwfdailynews.com and get closer to your community. The Okaloosa County Commission at its Tuesday morning meeting approved a lease with a Pensacola developer to build a 60,000square-foot hangar at Bob Sikes Airport. Dan Gilmore, owner of Rondan CEW LLC, has been interested in building a hangar on speculation to rent to future tenants, Airports Deputy Director Mike Stenson said. Hes been looking long and hard to build hangars, Stenson said. Hes a developer. Hes developed communities, residences, subdivisions and that sort of thing. He saw the opportunity with Airbus coming to Mobile, Ala. The European aircraft consortium plans to open a plant in Mobile that is expected to provide vendor opportunities into Northwest Florida. Gilmore looked at general aviation airports throughout Northwest Florida, including some in Bay, Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties, but he chose Crestview because of the leadership we have in place and all that weve done for the airport, Stenson said. He reportedly selected Bob Sikes Airport speci cally for County Airports Director Greg Donovan, Stenson and Deputy Director Tracy Stages involvement. When I asked around and inquired the rst time, you could tell they wanted somebody up there (in Crestview). Its always nice to be wanted. When you want something, you can do things to make sure it gets done, Stenson said. He liked that its pre-permitted and all the storm water mitigation thats been done and the taxiways that we enlarged, he said. Its an ideal environment for any aerospace company that wants to grow. The county airports department was tasked with enhancing Bob Sikes infrastructure over the past ve years, obtaining more than $32 million in grant money to resurface the 8,000-foot runway, widen the taxiways, re nish aprons, add runway lighting and install utilities for future growth. No taxpayer dollars from the area have been used at all, Stenson said, emphasizing that grants have funded improvements. Weve been really aggressive in going after grant money. Obviously, its paying off. Weve got everyone looking at it. We have developers wanting to build hangars there. With a 140,000-square-foot footprint, Gilmores project near the runways northwest end will encompass the hangar, an aircraft parking apron, a parking lot for vehicles and administrative of ces, Stenson said. The plan was to build the facility and attract a tenant. Hes been talking to other aerospace companies, Stenson said. Once the word got out what hes doing, his phones been ringing off the hook. In fact, Gilmore said, hes already signed a tenant. I cant disclose who it is at this point, but youll be very proud of him, he said. The tenant anticipates providing about 150 permanent jobs, Gilmore said. Construction of the hangar will provide jobs for local builders, he said. All the employees, all the workers and all the people driving bulldozers and trucks, theyll all be local people, Gilmore said. Having a tenant has added impetus to get the project moving. Gilmore said he anticipates construction beginning within 120 days. Were waiting for the weather to get a little bit better. Weve got to get it built and weve got to get it built quickly, he said. Its great to know all our efforts are paying off, Stenson said. Weve worked our tails off to build a world-class industrial airport, and were seeing it happen before our eyes. Its real rewarding to see. Weve all worked hard for that airport. By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com BAKER Ten senior Baker girls basketball players nished their regular-season careers in impressive fashion Tuesday as the Gators rolled to a 57-37 win over Gulf Breeze. I cant say enough about these seniors and the last four years and what they have meant to me, Baker coach Brian Wagner said. They have put in the work to improve and get better and they capped it off tonight with some great, passing and moving the ball was nice. A Bethany Chestnut basket gave the Gators a 2-0 lead with 6:20 left in the rst quarter before Savannah Nixon scored three quick points for the Dolphins, putting Gulf Breeze up 3-2 with just more than two minutes gone in the game. A Chestnut basket with 5:37 left in the rst quarter put Baker up 4-3, and the team led the rest of the way. The Gators (15-6) closed the rst quarter with an 11-2 run to take a double lead they would never relinquish on the way to their ninth-straight win. The run was fueled by a tough Gator defense that pressed the Dolphins the oors length and forced many turnovers off made baskets. Cassidy Anderson came up big during the run, scoring six of her game-high 19 points. Chestnut nished the quarter with seven points. Haley Wagner picked up a basket in the run as well. Anderson continued her torrid pace in the second quarters opening minutes, scoring six quick points as the Gators continued to press the Dolphins. Baker led 21-5 with 5:21 left in the half; the only question seemed to be by how much the Gators would win. Baker led 27-9 at the half. Gulf Breeze managed to outscore the Gators 17-15 in the third quarter, but that only cut the Baker lead to 16 points heading into the fourth quarter. The Baker seniors would not be denied a nal home win as the Gators pushed the lead to 57-34 on a Kathryn Quigg layup off a Wagner assist with 1:43 left in the game. A 3-point basket by Liz Hoehn of Gulf Breeze with 25 seconds left in the game nished out the scoring for the night. Lily Phillips joined Anderson in double gures for the Gators with 10 points. Chestnut scored nine points and Sarah Hudson had eight points. The Gators now prepare for next weeks District 2-1A tournament and Freeport. There are certain times that you can peak and I hope for us weve peaked at the right time, Brian Wagner said. The tough part for us now will be trying to maintain that from today until next Tuesday. SPORT S www.crestviewbulletin.com Saturday, January 26, 2013 Page A12 Crestviews Thomason signs with Alabama Southern By MATTHEW BROWN 682-6524 | @cnbMatthew matthewb@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Wednesday was unforget table for a Crestview High School senior who glimpsed his promising future. That morning, Seth Thomason, 18, signed a baseball scholarship to play for the Alabama Southern Eagles. I plan to be a hard worker for them, the teen said. Classmates and family members gathered in the CHS media center to congratulate Thom ason, who plays rst base for the Bulldogs. Crestview baseball coach Tim Gillis and Alabama Southern head coach Daniel Head have no doubt that Thomason will add value to the Eagles baseball team. His work ethic has been tremendous, Gil lis said. He has made himself into an above average defender at rst (base). In addition, Thomason has continued to produce on offense, Gillis said. He has been up there at the top of the list (of hitters), Gillis said. In his three years, he has come up with big hits ... in clutch situations. The coach also commented on the athletes character. He not only represents Crestview Base ball well, but (also) Crestview High School, Gillis said. Thomason would be a welcome addition to the team, Head said. I expect him to be a rst base hitter and make an immediate impact, he said. The Eagles have been losing both their starting and back-up players at the rst base man position, Head said. The idea is for him to come in and help us be competitive and win games for us, Head said. He will be very well prepared for college baseball because of where he is now. Alabama Southern has recruited several Crestview players in the past, and Thomason anticipates his arrival at the Monroeville, Ala., community college. The coaches are really nice there; I feel like I would t there, he said. I just like how they treated their players; they are real honest with everyone. They want me to hit the ball right off the bat; I plan to do that, Thomason said. The teen signed a baseball scholarship with Alabama Southern Community College on Wednesday. RANDY DICKSON | News Bulletin Kathryn Quigg sets up for a 3-point basket attempt in the rst half of Bakers win over Gulf Breeze on Tuesday. SENIOR NIGHT SUCCESS Walton girls down Crestview By RANDY DICKSON 682-6524 | @BigRandle randyd@crestviewbulletin.com CRESTVIEW Krista McQueen scored 23 points to lead a trio of Walton girls in double gures as the Braves beat Crestview 67-46 Thursday night. McQueen was joined in dou ble gures by Taliah Moore, who scored 21 and Deja Tucker with 14. The Braves (18-7) wasted little time in taking control of the game. A Jasmine Middleton basket off a Walton turnover with 25 seconds gone in the game gave the Bulldogs their only lead of the night at 2-0. A Moore 3-pointer put Walton up 3-2. Tuckers rst score made it 5-2 in favor of the Braves. Crestviews Molly Woodward hit a 3-pointer, tying things up at 5-5 with 6:13 left in the rst quarter. But that was the last time the Bulldogs didnt trail Walton. The Braves closed out the rst quarter with a 16-3 run, tak ing a 21-8 lead as Tucker had seven points in the rst quarter and Moore six. Crestview opened the second quarter with scores by Woodward and Arianna Sims, getting the Walton lead to under 10 points. Walton led 31-21 at the half. I thought we came out play ing real well, but then we had a little lull and I got perturbed at them, Walton coach Jerry Hes ter said. I thought we lost our intensity and everything. I dont know if they thought they saw the writing on the wall. But I was proud of the start, and then we had the lull and then came back out in the second half and cranked it back up. A strong third quarter by the Braves sealed the Bulldogs fate (9-11). Moore and McQueen teamed up for 11 of the 19 Brave points in the third as Walton outscored Crestview 19-8 in the quarter, pushing the lead to 50-29. The Bulldogs played the visitors even in the fourth quar ter, but by then it was too late. McQueen scored 10 of Waltons 17 points in the quarter as the Braves pulled away with the win. Woodward led Crestview in scoring with 11 points. Sims and Krista Johnson each scored seven points. Middleton and Jensis Coleman each had six for Crestview. The Bulldogs have the talent to win, but they still arent doing the little things, Crestview coach Kathy Combest said. We are still not blocking out our man, and thats a big gie, she said. We are throw ing the ball when there are two people between us and the man and we are still (making) the same mistakes. Molly Woodward drives the lane for Crestview against Walton on Thursday. Woodward led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points. RANDY DICKSON News Bulletin

Decisions made in these meetings, in which elected of cials mull ways to spend tax dollars, approve infrastructure and improve public services, can affect your quality of life and pocketbook. Local public safety coverage whether its criminal activity, suspects arrested or suspects wanted and health news water safety alerts, epidemics and updates also are covered with no exceptions.
