Trafc is a paramount concern in the city of Crestview, given our geog raphy and (State Road) 85; everybody lives and dies by it, committee Chair man Nathan Boyles said at the start of the Aug. 10 meeting. There will be a combi nation of strategies, Re naissance Vice President and Director of Trans portation Planning Whit Blanton said. There is no single silver bullet that will solve all of Crestviews transportation problems. Renaissance works closely with the Okaloosa/ Walton Transportation Planning Organization and is involved in the Tri County Growth Management Plan, Blanton said. When com pleted and accepted by the city, the consultants pro posals will go to the Florida Fewer staff, electives at CHSBy Brian Hughes brianh@crestviewbulletin.com Students returning to Crestview High School will see fewer familiar faces among faculty, staff and administrators, and nd fewer choices when they choose electives, Principal Bob Jones said. Weve had to cut back on some of the elective classes, Jones said. Were not able to offer as much. Jones is facing an even leaner budget than his predecessor, Ed Coleman, who transferred to the Okaloosa School District ofce at the end of the 2010 11 school year. Jones enumerated where staff cuts have been made. We dont have as many custodians. Were cutting back secretaries, cutting back on administration, he said. Theres not going to be as many assistant principals as there were. (Cuts have been) everywhere except in the main core classrooms: English, math, science, social studies; Family seeks answers Sheriffs investigation entering 7th weekBy Michael Stewart michaels@crestviewbulletin.com Nearly seven weeks after the body of Crestview resident Christopher Wayne Garrett, 21, was found in the back of a pickup truck in Walton County, his fam ily members still dont know what caused his death. Weve heard all kinds of sto ries, but we still dont know how he died, said Gaye Garrett, who is married to Chris tophers uncle. The Walton County Sheriffs Ofce is investigating Christo pher Garretts death. Autopsy results have not been released, and family members said they dont know if Chris topher Garrett died of natural causes or was the victim of foul play. Sheriffs spokesman Mike Morrison said investigators are still waiting for toxicology lab results from the autopsy, that he does not know how much longer the investigation will take and that, as a matter of routine, the sheriffs ofce cannot comment on an active investigation. Every investigation is differ ent, and each has its own set of unique circumstances, Morri son said. So it is difcult to put a time frame on how long the in vestigation will take. I can assure you the Walton County Sheriffs Ofce conducts a thorough and methodic investigation. Whit Blanton, a vice president with Renaissance Planning Group, describes his rms research into Crestviews trafc planning to the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce Government Issues Committee.MAXIME Q U EMENER News Bulletin Several Bulldog campers and their group leaders cheer on a spirited game of dodgeball as they wait their opportunity to join in the game during the Crestview High freshman orientation program. We can then begin to ap proach certain entities for grants, Blanton said. As suspected, most of the citys transportation needs and most of its transportation woes center around State 85. Part of Renaissances job, Blan ton said, is to create strategies that will alleviate some of State 85s trafc through a network of bypasses and connector roads to distribute trafc elsewhere, so everything doesnt have to get on 85. Overall, Renaissances re search found, there is sufcient network to support growth in and around Crestview, although State 85 is reaching capacity and is actually over capacity between downtown and Eglin Air Force Base. Trafc will continue to grow on 85; theres just no doubt about that, Blanton said. Most healthy communities have some peak hours of congestion, and Im not sure its worth millions and mil lions to correct that. Renaissance has begun to focus on a western bypass net work using P.J. Adams Parkway, Antioch Road, Arena Road and Old Bethel Road. To avoid what he called a pinch point, at least one more Interstate 10 inter change, preferably at Antioch Road, is needed. What youre doing by shifting some of that local trafc off 85 is you free it up for nonlocal traf c, Blanton said, adding, is always going to be a magnet for trafc, and its always going to ll up. An eastern bypass sometimes discussed, however, is not advis able, he said. The eastern option across I-10 is really not as much bang for your buck as the western op tion, Blanton said. Youre in the ight path for Eglin, and there are some environmental issues there. When we get into priori tizing, were leaning toward the west. Business leaders expressed concern that bypasses would adversely affect downtown busi nesses, a problem suffered by nearby Opp, Ala., which was com pletely cut off by a new bypass. We dont want a bypass total ly through Crestview, because we dont want our Highway 85 busi nesses to suffer, chamber Presi dent Derek Lott said. While attendees generally responded favorably to Renais sances strategies, a concern was the issue of funding. All these are great plans, and planning is important, but there is no money, County Commis sioner Wayne Harris said. Creating the P.J. Adams Park way corridor alone would cost be tween $100 million and $150 mil lion, he said. Local funding sourc es could come from an increased gas tax, creating a Municipal Service Benet Unit (MSBU) or setting user fees, none of which I want to see us get into, Harris said. To go after federal funds, Blanton said, the nal plan must articulate as many benets as possible, such as community livability, access to schools and emergency access to military fa cilities. Theres a lot of ways to ap proach the federal government when you have a good story to tell, he said. You broaden it by linking to other goals in the com munity. We have a congestion problem doesnt get very far. Impact fees, developer con tributions, regional transpor tation funds and grant funds form the bulk of local and state funding possibilities. Blanton cautioned against being too aggressive with impact fees, a touchy subject in the Hub City. You dont want to scare any one off, he said. Blanton said the overall plan would also address pedestrian and bicycle routes, as well as public transportation. Trafc sig nal synchronization, to expedite getting through town, is part and parcel to any solution, Blan ton said. Theres no reason it cant be done. The challenge you have now is you have one main route through town. Harris said Okaloosa County trafc engineers are construct ing a ber-optic trafc control system on all major county roads. Central cameras would observe trafc ow, and engineers could control signals in the event of congestion. The ber network is in on all those trafc signals in Crest view, City Planner Eric Davis reported. MAXIME QUEMENER | News Bulletin Community civic and business leaders packed the Chamber of Commerce conference room for a presentation by Crestviews trafc consultants during a recent meeting of the chambers Government Issues Committee. theres been cuts pretty much everywhere else. Facing a school operating on a bare-bones budget and a reduced staff didnt deter the biggest turnout in the history of the freshman orientation program. Bulldog Camp organizer and leadership class instructor Stephanie Sanders estimated more than 450 new students attended the Aug. 11 orientation. This is the biggest group weve had for Bulldog Camp, school resource ofcer Cpl. Greg Porch conrmed. Students from the leadership class conducted the camp for the second year in a row, guiding incoming freshmen on tours of the school, showing them how to nd and open their lockers, and, above all, offering a friendly upperclassman face that many of the new Bulldogs will turn to. Were like big brothers and big sisters, senior Catherine Ramos said. Fellow senior and camp leader Jessica Silvia said the camp helped alleviate two of many freshmens biggest fears: Trying to nd their lockers and nding their way around, because classes are so far apart. Jones, formerly principal at Shoal River Middle School, and before that, at Richbourg Middle School, appreciates that the transition from middle school to high school is a major step for some students. Its a big jump, Jones said. I understand the change and transition thats there. Theres a lot more freedom and a lot more responsibility. People arent going to be as willing to hold your hand. Youre kind of on your own. This camp is a way of letting them know that and letting them bond with some upperclassmen and have some people they recognize among the upperclassmen when school starts. For incoming freshman Matthew Evans, who recently attended Davidson Middle School, the camp helped build his condence as he and his classmates begin school Aug. 22. Its a whole lot bigger, Matthew said, looking around the vast hallways. Its probably going to take a little bit of getting used to where everything is. Im a little bit worried about getting to my locker on time. The orientation has helped me nd my way around this place, and its been a lot of fun so far. Im excited about what theyre going to be seeing in the classroom, Jones said. This is a great school. Theres a great faculty here, and I know the students we sent from Shoal River and the students from Davidson are just as good. We have two great schools feeding us, so its just an awesome place to be. But campers also learned during a brieng from several leadership students that there will be more to high school life than the schools A-plus academics. Dont make homework and studying your life, senior Kara Horne cautioned. Have fun! You wont get these four years back. The sheriffs ofce did release a partial transcript of an incident report written by the deputy who respond ed at 2:46 a.m. July 2 to 42 Rodin Road in DeFuniak Springs. When the deputy arrived at the address off of U.S. Highway 331, Christo pher Garrett wasnt breath ing. According to the report, earlier Christopher Garrett and several people left the Trackside Bar in DeFuniak Springs at about 2 a.m. and stopped at a Tom Thumb Food Store at the corner of U.S. Highway 90 and U.S. 331. Witnesses said Christo pher Garrett was standing outside in the parking lot when the other occupants of the pickup truck they were in went inside the store. When those in the store came outside, they saw Christopher Garrett lay ing on the ground next to the vehicle, and he was breathing and they thought he had just passed out from being intoxicated, one wit ness told the deputy. Christopher Garrett was placed in the back of the pickup truck and taken to the address on Rodin Road where they checked his pulse again and veried he was still breathing, the re port states. The deputy was told that Christopher Garrett was left inside the truck while those with him went inside the residence at 42 Rodin Drive. When one of them came out to check on him 20 minutes later, he had no pulse. A witness said one per son at the house began CPR, while another called 911. Deputies who had ar rived took over CPR until an ambulance from Walton County Fire/Rescue arrived and a paramedic declared Christopher Garrett dead. The rest of the report is blacked out. Christopher Garretts grandfather, Paul Garrett, said his grandsons death makes no sense. He was young and healthy, Paul Garrett said. Niceville resident Donna Knight, Christopher Gar retts grandmother, agreed. But Knight said she is glad the sheriffs ofce is taking time with her grand sons death investigation. At the same time, its really hard not knowing, Knight said. According to the sheriffs report, items taken during the investigation include video from the Tom Thumb store at U.S. 90 and 331, along with a cellphone that Gaye Garrett said belonged to Christopher Garrett. The communitywide event brought people together to enjoy contemporary Christian music, a multitude of door prizes and games from the stage. It also served as one of the last gatherings of the summer. Corporate sponsors Gulf Power, One Hour Heating and Cooling, and Wells Fargo donated backpacks for the rst 200 back-to-school-age children. Calvary United Church gave the children school supplies. Okaloosa County Sheriffs Ofce deputies distributed child safety information and local Crime Stoppers pencil bags. Capt. Larry Ward reminded parents of the importance of monitoring their childrens use of the Internet. There are safe posts for your childs Facebook, and there is information that they should never post, Ward said. Monitoring their Facebook wall contents and their friends is important to their safety, but Im a father, and I know the line I can go to to let my daughter know Im looking out for her and still let her have her creativity on there. Bullying in the schools and cyberbullying are also issues that parents need to educate against. I like the clown with the sheriff people, but Im here for the pizza. It is my favorite food, said 9-yearold Baker School student Jonathan Cuchens. Marion Diona attended the bash for the second year and brought her daughter Diriah Baldwin, 1, who was teething on a packet of school supplies. Marcia Gaillard brought her two grandchildren from Baker. Our focus for the bash is to create goodwill and a spirit of giving to the youth of Crestview, the Rev. Charles Braneff Jr. said. We want to express that there are alternatives to drugs, alcohol, sex and other addictive lifestyles; there are wholesome ways to give back to the community. Braneffs wife, Tanya, called their congregations outreach a little church doing big things. We see people hurting every day peer pressure, broken homes, difcult situations and relationships that break hearts, she said. Finding a church group that cares can make all the difference in the world to someone who is suffering. This takes our church outside of its four walls. This is an outreach that will bring youth into our youth group because they nd people who are good to them. Last year our church had 50 rst-time visitors after this event. Door prizes given away at the bash included an iPad2, a $100 prepaid Visa card, gasoline cards and cash. Those who attended were also invited to Sunday morning services at Calvary United Church. 2079798 Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church 9546684 WELCOME 7TH SPECIAL FORCES AND ALL INCOMING MILITARY Roy M. The stuffed utility trailer and pickup truck bed were the result of a concerted effort between volunteer local community leaders and city employees. Under the watchful eye of community activist Mae Reatha Coleman, Crestview reghters wheeled dolly after dolly stacked to overowing out of the Woodruff Avenue public safety building to the trailer and pickup parked out front. The trailer was loaned by the city Public Works department, while use of the pickup was courtesy of the Crestview Fire Department. The Crestview Police Department had been instrumental in delivering many of the donations to Colemans church and to the main rehouse. Its a combined city effort, said Fire Chief Joe Traylor, whose re stations also served as collection points for the donations. As the brigade of donated goods owing from the rehouse increased in volume, Colemans pastor, the Rev. Al Flowers of Mt. Zion AME Church, prayed to keep threatening clouds at bay. Fireghter Lt. David Sidley stacked paper towels, toilet paper, bleach, napkins and more into the trailer as his colleagues handed them to him from the dollies. They told me exactly what they wanted, Coleman said of the people of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Faireld, Ala., which will distribute the donations through several churches in the Pratt City area. Once the truck and trailer were packed, Battalion Chief Marquiz Johnson drove the rig to Pratt City. Its his day off and he volunteered to do that, Traylor explained. He had no problem volunteering. As the reghters at last closed the trailer door against a tottering, ceiling-high load of toiletries, and Flowers prayers kept bad weather away, Coleman clasped her hands in joy. I am so happy! she exclaimed. I am so thankful to the city and the people of Crestview, and the police department and re department. Donations Alabama-bound Crestview supplies to benet tornado victims By Brian Hughes brianh@crestviewbulletin.com With the U.S. Army 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) almost fully transplanted from Fort Bragg, N.C., to its new cantonment south of Crestview, the citys population continues to swell. Since the move was rst announced several years ago, the city has been preparing for an inux of new residents. Now, local ofcials believe more soldiers and their families than originally anticipated have chosen to call Crestview home. Anyone driving around Crestview has noticed a large number of moving vans, Mayor David Cadle said. A larger number of them are relocating in Crestview than we really expected. Were excited about that. At the Aug. 8 city council meeting, Cadle said that he has received many positive comments about the reception our new neighbors have received. They are very expansive in their remarks about how well they have been treated, Cadle said. In fact, newcomers from North Carolina have already coined an affectionate nickname for their new community, he said. I understand they have already termed us as The View, which is ne by me, Cadle said. Cadle said he, Tom Moody of the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce and County Commissioner Wayne Harris, who also serves as the chambers executive director, recently discussed the new arrivals and ways the city can continue to make them feel welcome. Moody recommended meeting with the 7th Special Forces commander to make sure his troops know just how much they are welcomed here. Cadle said the citys support would also include assuring the success of the groups annual 5and 10-kilometer run event. We told them whatever streets they need closed for their run will be closed, Cadle said. We want those runs held here. Cadle said Harris reported that about 70 percent of the troops and their families have selected Crestview as their hometown, 15 percent more than originally anticipated. With such a large number of the elite forces and their families in town, Cadle and the chamber of commerce would like to promote the Armys presence. We feel that every entrance to the city of Crestview should have signs saying, Welcome to Crestview, Home of the 7th Special Forces, Cadle said. This is a special place and their home, and the chamber is totally supportive of it, chamber President Derek Lott said of the sign idea, which would be funded by private and business contributions. I would suggest looking at our existing signs and making an improvement to add that underneath, Council Member Robyn Helt suggested, referring to the signs standing at each major entrance to the city. Cadle said the city must continue to assert its position as home of the 7th Special Forces. Weve got to make an aggressive effort. Weve had things stolen from us before, Cadle said. We want them to know this is their home. We really want to roll out the red carpet, he said, making a pun in reference to the red color of the 7th Special Forces shield. MAXIME QUEMENER | Crestview News Bulletin This sign on U.S. Highway 90 west welcoming motorists to Crestview might soon include Home of the 7th Special Forces if an initiative by Mayor David Cadle and chamber of commerce leaders is successful. The Florida Public Service Commission voted unanimously Aug. 9 to award Gulf Power the right to serve the planned Free dom Walk development. The dispute between Gulf Power and the Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative had been going on since May 2010. Both utilities claimed the right to provide electricity to Freedom Walk. Were standing ready to provide ser vice when they begin construction, and that could be next month or next year, said Jeff Rogers, a spokesman for Gulf Power. We just do not know. Freedom Walk is a proposed mixed-use development near Crestview High School. Early plans called for about 500 residential lots, more than 100,000 square feet of com mercial and retail space and a 270-unit apartment complex. The $12 million project also will feature walking trails, parks and an amenity center. An email sent Tuesday to one of Freedom Walks developers seeking an update on the status of the project was not returned. Gulf Power provides electricity to the city of Crestview, while CHELCO services some of the rural areas right outside the city limits. According to documents led with the Public Service Commission, CHELCO stat ed a small portion of the development would fall outside of the city limits if the developers purchased additional land. Gulf Power argued that the project was within the city limits. Gulf Power wins dispute over electricity rights By Dusty Ricketts Florida Freedom Newspapers Vision Airlines an nounced it will discontinue service from Northwest Florida Regional Airport to more than half of its cur rent destinations during the fall and winter. The decision came two weeks after the carrier an nounced that it is ending service to Las Vegas on Aug. 18 due to low demand. Vision ofcials said nine of the 15 other destinations currently being serviced from Northwest Florida Re gional Airport would also be discontinued. The reduced schedule will start Friday, Aug. 19, when the airline will cut service to Lafayette, La., Shreveport, La., Chat tanooga, Tenn., Knoxville, Tenn., and Asheville, N.C. (The decision was) fully driven by demand, said Clay Meek, director of sales for Vision Airlines. Were keeping some very major cities, those cities (where) we did not see the sales fall off as school began to start. But these cities that we dropped, we saw a drastic, drastic decrease in sales as schools started. Other cities that have been dropped from VPS in clude Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Little Rock and St. Louis, with some destina tions remaining until Nov. 2. Vision Airlines will con tinue to offer direct service to Atlanta, Louisville, Mem phis/Tunica, Orlando and St. Petersburg from North west Florida Regional Airport during the fall and winter. Were committed to try ing that, Meek said. Ob viously we cant y empty planes. Meek said the reduc tion of service to and from Northwest Florida Region al is temporary. The airline will resume a fuller sched ule of ights starting April 1 of next year, he added. Some of the discontin ued destinations will be brought back while new destinations likely will be added, Meek said. I think we can cer tainly look at this as a very positive situation, he said. Weve broken all records in coming to Destin. We see it as a move based on demand. As long as that de mand is out there, well put as many planes in the mar ket that we have to meet that demand. Customers who have purchased a ticket in ad vance for one of the can celled ights will have the option of receiving a full refund or a ticket to one of Visions other destinations. Local A8 | Crestview News Bulletin Wednesday, August 17, 2011 By Brian Hughes brianh@crestviewbulletin.com As state and federal de partments close ofces and require online application for services, more and more citizens are simply told to go to the public library if they dont have a home com puter with an Internet con nection. But at the same time, library budgets have been cut, rather than augmented, to provide equipment need ed to accommodate the in creased trafc. They need to fund the libraries better so we can offer these services, said Annie Whitmore, a circula tion clerk at the Crestview Public Library, echoing a frustration shared by her colleagues. They do everything from unemployment searches to food stamps and resumes, library acquisitions clerk Sabrina Sturdivant said. Ev erything you can think of. Its just a vast variety of infor mation that theyre request ing. I know over the last year trafc has increased. Some of the services and programs citizens must ap ply for online now include the Supplemental Nutri tion As-sistance Program (SNAP, formerly called food stamps), temporary cash as sistance, Medicaid, Florida Healthy Kids and unemploy ment benets. A Department of Chil dren and Families system called ACCESS Florida (Au tomated Community Con nection to Economic SelfSufciency) allows users to manage accounts in several of the services. The library added four new customer computers last year, alleviating poten tial waits during busy com puter use periods, but that doesnt solve a major dif culty inherent in the new application procedures, reference librarian Sandra Dreaden said. This ACCESS website is very confusing to people who have limited com puter skills, Dreaden said. Theyre intimidated by computers already. Dreaden said the library offers free computer and In ternet use tutoring, but vol unteers are few. When we have computer tutors available, we actually take appointments and they would sit with the people for an hour and help them le for their benets, Dreaden said. Its a wonderful ser vice they can provide by sit ting one-on-one with people. We always welcome more computer volunteers. Dreaden said the library has had so many requests for computers to le for services, that library staff installed a icon on each com puter desktop linking users directly to ACCESS Florida. Dreaden also maintains a special le at her desk to keep abreast of what servic es patrons will need to look up and access. I call it my go to the li brary le, Dreaden said. Its services where the gov ernment tells people to go to the library to use a public computer. But it doesnt provide any extra funding for us, she added ruefully. People come here to ap ply for jobs. Everybody has their applications online, even Winn-Dixie, Dreaden said. They wont take an application in the store any more. Its, Go to the library and put in an application on line. According to the state Agency for Workforce In novation, the Aug. 1 switch to totally online unemploy ment benets applications, job searches, skills reviews and weekly benets ling will save $4.7 million annu ally in ad-ministrative costs. The change has also driven more people to the local Job sPlus ofce on Wilson Street Were seeing an in crease in trafc simply from that, JobsPlus center man ager Rita Smith said. Our center is seeing an increase in walk-ins but unfortunately we dont have an increase in staff. As with many library pa trons, some of the people coming to JobsPlus also lack computer skills. Many of the people in Crestview have limited com puter kills, or they dont have a computer at home, Smith said, lamenting that govern ment ofcials who mandated the changes in application procedures didnt take ru ral applicants into consider ation. I think they forget what its like out here where peo ple dont have a computer or they have limited computer skills, Smith said. Were adjusting and everybodys trying to be as helpful as possible. The big event will feature the Baker middle school foot ball team, as well as the Ga tor varsity and junior varsity squads. Baker Area Youth As sociation (BAYA) teams will also be there. In addition to the football teams, the Baker Sounds of the Swamp band will perform, and cheerleading teams will be on hand, too. Things get started at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $2 per person, and the Baker concession stand will be open for business. Baker head football coach and athletic director Matt Brunson said the format of the night will be simple. We are going to let the middle school scrimmage for a series and then the JV and then the varsity, and we will keep on rotating (the teams on the eld), Brunson said. We will introduce the BAYA play ers, and we will introduce all of our guys. I think its good. It gives the local fans a chance to come out and get an early look at our guys and meet them. Its good to put a name and a face with a jersey number that you dont always get to do when the sea son starts. Brunson said the teams will start their stretching drills at 6:30 p.m., followed by kicking drills and introduction of play ers, and then the scrimmages will begin. The event should last about two hours. Brunson said he believes Meet the Gators Night is a per fect way for the Baker commu nity to celebrate the start of the 2011 season. This will bring more close ness in the close-knit commu nity that we have, he said. Its a great situation with us being a K-12 school. It allows the young kids (in BAYA ball) to see our guys. Season tickets: Season passes are now on sale for the Baker football season. Cost of the season ticket package is $100 and includes two tickets that are good for all of the Ga tor home middle school, junior varsity and varsity football games. Stadium banners: Brunson said the Booster Club is looking for stadium banner sponsors. Cost to renew a banner from last year is $100. New stadium banners are $150. By Randy Dickson randyd@crestviewbulletin.com As best I can remember Im a product of Little League Baseball. I say as best as I can remember because it has been more than 40 years since I played what I believe was my last Little League game in the spring of 1970 when I was 12 years old. The fact is Ive always considered myself as having played Little League Baseball rather than one of the other ne youth baseball organizations such as Dizzy Dean or Dixie Youth. Although I consider myself a Little League alumnus, at this point, I dont know if the Little League International could offer the youth of Crestview any more or less than the current Dizzy Dean program that is used by the Parks and Recreation Department. There is no doubt Little League International is the most recognized youth baseball organization in the world. And it cant be argued that Little League has inuenced millions of young baseball and softball players through the years. I would go so far as to say that Little Leagues greatest accomplishment is the Challenger league it offers for special needs children. If you do any channel surng the next few days, you are likely to come across a Little League game on one of the ESPN family of networks. Yes, its that time of year when teams are ghting to make it to the Mecca of Little League Baseball, Williamsport, Pa., where the organization was born in 1939. First day in pads a hit for the Gators CONTACT SPORT By Randy Dickson randyd@crestviewbulletin.com BAKER An almost fall-like day, by midAugust standards, greeted the Baker foot ball team Thursday evening as the Gators put on the pads for the rst time in the pre season. Low humidity and temperatures hovering in the mid to upper 80s made for perfect con ditions as the hitting started in preparation for the upcoming season. The practice started with some mild stretching and kicking drills. About 15 min utes into the two-hour practice, the hitting began with a board drill that produced some big licks as players battled one-on-one. The board drill seemed to set the tone for the rest of the lively practice, much to the pleasure of head coach Matt Brunson. You dont know how things are going to translate until we get into gear, Brunson said. Our guys were physical on the board and tackling drills. NOTES from page B1 LITTLE LEAGUE from page B1 is for youths ages 4 to 18 and is unique because it is tax-exempt, so those who donate money to the organization can deduct the contribution from their taxes. About 2.7 million kids participate throughout the world, he said. People who get involved with it love it, Zimmerman said. When youre aligned with Little League, you get instant recognition. The fee to join Little League covers insurance for each child, Zimmerman said, and the league also conducts thorough back ground checks on all adult par ticipants to assure the childrens safety. Little League also provides equipment and uniforms and will seek sponsorships for the teams, alleviating the cost to the city, Zimmerman said. I believe in Little League. Little League is very fair, said Ron Covey, district Little League administrator. Every child gets to play. No child sits on the bench. Council President Charles Baugh Jr. sought clarication of what exactly Zimmerman and Covey were requesting, wonder ing if the Little League just wanted to use city facilities or if they also wanted to integrate with the citys recreation program. What were looking for is the citys youth program to align with Little League International, Zim merman said. The only change would be instead of the city of Crestview league, it will be the Crestview Little League. We already have a pretty suc cessful program, Baugh said, with more than 800 Crestview kids playing baseball. How would the city of Crestview benet from the Little League program? Covey said the program would open up to kids throughout the area, including neighboring com munities such as Baker and Lau rel Hill. All those kids would come here, Covey said. Would the revenue now being generated for the city go away and go to Little League Internation al? Baugh asked. Council Member Robyn Helt said she would like to discuss Lit tle Leagues program with other municipalities during the upcom ing Florida League of Cities con ference, including questions about revenue and facilities. Helt said she was unprepared to make any decision at Mondays meeting. Were not asking the city pro gram to go away, Zimmerman assured the council members. Were asking for it to align with Little League. If it means adding 200 more youths to our sports, Im inter ested in learning more about in tegrating our programs, Baugh said. When we came together on the inside run period, the offense had a tough time moving it (the ball) because the defense was playing good technique, which you dont al ways get the rst day in pads. Overall, it was a great rst day. They got after each other and played great technique on both sides of the ball, and they did what we asked them to. Brunson has continually stressed his de sire to build a physical football team since taking over the Gator program in January, and he saw that physical play Thursday. The bottom line is I think we established in the spring that we are going to try to be physical, he said. The intensity we worked with in the weight room (during the offsea son) has denitely carried over, which you saw out here today in pads. We are going to try to base our attack with a strong, physical running game and do some things off of it and play great de fense. Senior receiver Ivory Smith wasnt sur prised by how well things went in the prac tice. It went good, he said. We played like I thought we would. This is how, if we are go ing to win state, we are going to have to per form by working hard and out-hitting them. We are working hard to get all our sys tems in and how things are supposed to be. Not only did the Gators shine in the phys ical aspects of the game, but they seemed to be ahead of the learning curve when run ning through their plays. We didnt have any major bust, Brunson said. Our guys know what to do. We just have to keep dening it and keep working. These guys have conditioned hard (dur ing the summer). We have run hard. We have lifted hard, but working in the heat this summer and the work we did has enabled us to practice hard. Senior lineman Dillon Cotton agreed with his coachs assessment. I think we did a pretty good job, he said. Everyone was very physical. I denitely think everything was intact, and we didnt have many problems at all. I think it was a great rst day. We de nitely need to get better, but it was a great rst day. ABOVE LEFT: A Baker defensive back goes high for a pass under the watchful eye of assistant coach Andy Valmus. Photos by RANDY DICKSON News Bulletin I wish I had been at the recent Crestview City Council meeting when Little League made its pitch to integrate its youth baseball program with that of the city. News Bulletin reporter Brian Hughes story about the presentation left me with some questions I would have liked to ask Little League International representatives Eric Zimmerman and Ron Covey, as well as some counter points I would have made. It would have been nice to have Parks and Recreation Department Supervisor Chuck Powell on hand as well to answer some questions. My rst question would be whether the current Parks and Recreation Department elds could adequately accommodate an additional 200-plus players. In fact, in a Jan. 21, 2009, story I did on spring youth baseball/softball registration, Powell told me, We have limited facilities, and I do have to be real creative sometimes with our scheduling just to get games in for the number of the kids that we have registered. Powell went on to say Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken leagues that were starting at the time would help ease the strain on the city while providing an opportunity for more than 200 children to play ball. If they dont succeed, we will have anywhere from 200220 more kids, Powell said at the time. Its not that I want to sound like, Im glad we dont have those kids because we couldnt handle them. We would nd a way to make it happen, but it does provide us some relief. No offense to Little League, but unless the city has come up with additional playing elds in the last few years, there should be no further discussions. Covey said Little League is fair because every child gets to play. I wonder if Covey is aware that every child gets to play in the citys current Dizzy Dean league as well. Ill admit that I dont know what kind of background checks the city does on any of the coaches in the numerous programs sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, but to the best of my knowledge, there havent been any problems concerning those unspeakable crimes we are all concerned about. I know kids get uniforms in Dizzy Dean ball. I dont know if they get to keep the entire uniform or not, but I know in many cases they keep the jersey and always the cap. When I played Little League, we turned in our uniform at the end of the season and only kept our cap. But as I said, that was 41 years ago. It would be interesting to see how insurance provided through Dizzy Dean compares to the Little League insurance. I would guess that insurance is basically to cover an injury sustained in practice or during a game. I wonder what equipment Little League provides. Is it any more than the catchers gear, bats, helmets and baseballs or softballs provided when I played way back when? Will a family living in Baker, Laurel Hill or Holt drive to Crestview to play Little League as opposed to Dizzy Dean, or whatever local league is being offered at the ballpark down the street or around the corner? Will those kids have to pay more than Crestview residents? Id like to know what additional costs or savings the city might have if Little League comes to town. Again, I know this seems as if Im questioning Little League Internationals motives for wanting to corner the Crestview market. Believe me, that isnt the case, but these are just some of the questions I have, and a good newspaper reporter always has questions. The question Council President Charles Baugh Jr. asked seems to cut to the heart of the matter. Baugh asked, How would the city of Crestview benet from the Little League program? Ill let the decision makers answer that one. DICKSON from page B1 GATORS from page B1 Above, Little League International district administrator Ron Covey speaks to the Crestview City Council at its Aug. 8 meeting. If Little League International comes to Crestview, even the youngest of players, such as this one at left at the Bulldog Baseball Camp earlier this summer, will have an opportunity to play in the largest youth baseball organization in the world. Crestview News Bulletin | B3 Wednesday, August 17, 2011 Arts & Entertainment By Brian Hughes Arts & Entertainment Editor The Okaloosa Arts Alliance-North and Main Street Crestview Associations series of summer music and arts festivals concluded on a high note Friday evening as folks danced in the intersection of Main Street and Woodruff Avenue despite soaring heat and humidity. Organizers were delighted with a large turnout, which culminated the series second season. This has been a great summer, OAAN Chairwoman Rae Schwartz said. We have had such good response to all three events that next year we might have to call it MAMMS Music, Art and More on Main Street. Art lovers strolled the block of Main Street south of Woodruff, which was lled with artists displaying paintings, jewelry, photography, woodwork, sketches, quilts and other fabric arts. This is fantastic, artist Jessica Smith said as people passed by her display of paintings and photography. Its good to see so many different people out tonight. In the courtyard of the Main Street Land Title Company, the evenings live music got under way with the classic rock sound of The Journey Band, which delighted the crowd with an encore performance of Trains Hey, Soul Sister. Toes continued tapping when Dennis Mitchell started banging out the honky-tonk tunes that nanced his way through college as a saloon pianist. Crestview native Ashley Curenton Turner returned to her hometown with her husband, Brett, father-inlaw, Mike Turner, and their band, the reincarnation of the popular Gulf Breeze 60s group The 13th Hourglass. As streetlamps ickered on and the temperature dropped ever so slightly, folks turned from the art toward the musical component. A dance competition drew seven registered couples and quite a few more unofcial dancers who just couldnt resist the beat of the 13th Hourglass covers of hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. By the time the Fred Astaire Dance Studio judges pronounced Tonya and Eber Nascimento the winners of the rst-place trophy, $150 had been earned toward the Crestview High School bands trip to the 2012 Rose Parade. Siblings Morgan and Jordan Rogers won the $50 cash prize. More funds supporting the Big Red Machines upcoming march into band history were raised through the sale of Tour de Main Street restaurant crawl wristbands. Several eateries stayed open late, and Christophers Uncorked Bistro offered a prix xe menu for gourmands dining at the corporate tables set up beyond the Main Street Land Title Companys courtyard fountain. An exhibit of lovingly handstitched quilts was on display at the Tropical Palm Restaurant, many crafted by Lou Vera King, grandmother of Hart Printing manager Viola Owens, from scrap material produced at the Alatex sewing factory. Quilters from the Flying Needles Quilt Guild displayed samples of their craftsmanship at a tent farther down Main Street. From its humble beginnings as an idea by a group of artists sitting around the Crestview Public Library one evening wishing there was a public venue to show and share, Music and Art on Main Street has blossomed into an exciting communitywide series of music, art and dining, energizing Crestviews historic downtown while providing summertime activities that can be shared by folks of all ages. Who knew this was going on in Crestview? Ashley Turner asked in amazement after her band nished its performance. I need to get home more often!
