Council member Robyn Helts insistence at the last council meeting that she and her fellow council members arrive at a consen sus in time for the Aug. 1 charter review workshop paid off. In less than an hour, the council arrived at a general agreement on the form of the citys government and the functions of some of its executives. Among the biggest changes, the city council would appoint a city administra tor who would manage the day-to-day opera tions of the city, oversee city departments and budgets, and appoint a city clerk. Mayor David Cadle had said at previ ous meetings that some residents were concerned that an unelected administrator would add another layer of government and additional expense and would not be answer able to voters. Cadle had also said earlier that there wasnt much for the mayor to do under ear lier charter-revision drafts. Cadle suggested a stronger mayor than rst proposed, in addition to an appointed city manager. Among the proposed draft, the mayors duties would include attending and presid ing over council meetings but having no vote; maintaining investigative powers of allegations of malfeasance or nonfeasance of elected ofcials; holding veto power over ordinances; presenting an annual state-ofthe-city report; and assuming public safety powers in the event of an emergency, such as a hurricane. After discussion, it was also agreed that the mayor would continue to sign checks and contracts for the city, which would then be veried by the city clerk. The city administrator would prepare most city contracts.MAXIME Q U EMENER | News Bulletin Library Director Jean Lewis listens to input from her staff as she presents her proposed 2011-12 budget to the city council. Library, Admin Services, recreation budgets presented By Brian Hughes brianh@crestviewbulletin.com Two Crestview city de partment heads presented their respective proposed budgets at a city council workshop last week, draw ing both questions and praise for their scal stew ardship from council mem bers. Budgets for the Crest view Public Library and Administrative Services would increase nearly 1.4 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively. Library Director Jean Lewis and Administrative Services Director Mike Wing represented the citys combined recreational and cultural services. Wing presented the Parks and Recreation departments proposed budget, which would increase 1.9 percent in the 2011-12 scal year if approved. Lewis total budget re quest of $637,057 is an $8,739 increase over the current years budget. Lewis cut more than $2,000 in com pensation time and more than $9,300 in group insur ance premiums. Still, the librarys proposed person nel budget of $480,289 is up nearly $14,000 from the cur rent year. Our employees are among the few that are working six days a week, Lewis said. Our staff is motivated to provide the best in friendly service and making sure our custom ers feel welcome and com fortable. The library served 108,000 patrons this s cal year, Lewis said, and anticipates a 15 percent increase with the arrival of Florida A&M University faculty, staff and students, and the Armys 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) families. Rarely does a day or two go by without someone say ing to me, Im not going back to that place. The place was dirty, and the help were unruly and ill-mannered. Unfortunately, I have had some acquaintances make such comments about our local hospital. In all honesty, I do not know why, and I surely do not agree with them. Quite honestly, and as a patient, I have visited two hospitals in our 16 years of residency in Okaloosa County. My bride, on the other hand, has been a guest at just about all of them, and it has been in the past three weeks that she was admitted to North Okaloosa Medical Center and its intensive care unit for an erratic heart that had several doctors intimately involved with her treatment. For better than two days, a bevy of tests were run. On the morning of her third day, the cause of her palpitations was determined, and in very short order, a x was pre scribed and executed. By the middle of the afternoon, she was on her way home. I make mention of this simply because she got nothing but the best pro fessional care available. Doctors in the emergency room were attentive, thor ough and compassionate. The nursing staff attended promptly to her every need, and the various other specialists took the time to explain what was going on and why. How often would a pa tient expect to see the CEO of the hospital at the foot of his or her emergency room bed? My bride experienced just that as she awoke from a short slumber to see the CEO of NOMC standing at the foot of her bed just checking on things. I have men tioned this to some people, and Ive been told, Yeah, but its dirty. In my opinion, and I have had suf cient experience in numer ous hospitals, military and civilian, to determine if a place is dirty, NOMC is im maculate! Friends and neighbors have told me that they are going to Milton or Pensaco la to see doctors, and I must restrain myself from asking, Why? Aside from a small number of unique medical specialties, just about every area of diagnosis and treat ment is right here in our fair community. In the decade and a half that we have been here, we have seen the capac ity of the hospital expand, the number of specialties increased, and the morale and unique qualities of the nursing staff improve. In other words, and this is my opinion based upon per sonal observations, we have a quality institution of which the residents of Crestview and surrounding area can be proud. My side of the story Editors note: This letter is in reply to an Aug. 6 story in the Crestview News Bul letin titled, City employee owes $600. Dear Editor: To begin with, if my wa ter bill had been allowed to build up to $600, someone inside City Hall was not do ing their job! And just for the record, I am well and capable of paying my bills. The mayor looked me in the eye Thursday, Aug. 4, and said, I did not give out your name. But she did; it is in the paper. Why just my name? Why single out just one person? Are my personal nances the general publics business? All 12 names should have been included. As a city em ployee, I am no different, no better, than anyone else. If I get behind with my water bill cut me off too! In other words, the ball was dropped from within city hall, not out in the eld. It seems to me that what we have here is the failure of communication; the fail ure of facts and truth! I have been employed for 16 months and still have no rule book or employee policy. If we are going to have a rule book it should apply to everyone. If there is an ordinance why hasnt it been followed for the past 16 months? The new water clerk is addressing situations that have been looked over for the past 16 months. Looks like she is on board to do the right thing for all concerned, even city employees. More Laurel Hill citizens need to attend the council meetings and then you can see how this city is really run. Jeff Sentertt Laurel Hill Water Department employee Hypocrisy, just a tip of the iceberg A recent article written by Mr. Allen, a former coun cil member for Crestview, is a direct attack on a current and one time fellow council member. Mr. Allen hides behind city employ morale as an excuse to personally attackmyself. Even though the article does not justify a response, the truth does. Mr. Allen uses the employees talking about morale and the fur lough days they were forced to endure from last years budget, a budget he had voted to adopt; and let me remind you, Mr. Allen, our department heads brought the fur lough-days idea to the council as a indication of the employ ees wanting to do their part to help. My EM PLOYEE newsletter on May 12 was not an attack on them, but rather an attempt to draw out wrongdoing. All the in cidents I had spoken of that Mr. Allen nicely quoted in his article were things that had already been discussed on the dais, nothing new, no new accusations. And since Mr. Allen did serve four years on the council with nothing to show for it, he should know that the Sunshine Law for bids me stating names in an article, as it might be some thing voted on later. One question I have for Mr. Allen is why is this employee newsletter, not a letter to the electorate, such a controversy when the city has much larger issues to deal with? The fact that thousands have been lost in revenue is not important enough for an article? What about the il legal concession stand we had for four years? How about NO accountability for wrongdoing? The taxpayers pay all of us to operate the city as ef ciently as possible, and that includes holding our people accountable. Mr. Allen likes to bring the charter into this newsletter, and the city charter is by far a high pri ority, and looking to change our form of government to include a city administrator is right on target for giving the people what they need and deserve leadership, and efciency. I doubt Mr. Allen un derstands either concept since he didnt even wait for Mrs. Janice Youngs position of city clerk to get cold, or ofcial, before he was in the mayors ofce vying for the position; not to mention since when did he care about the employees before he left. Even after voting to eliminate posi tions, he wanted to raise the councils salary. For months since he lost the election he has written articles attacking what the council has been trying to doprogress; something Mr. Allen was either inca pable of doing or unwilling. It took Mr. Allen several campaigns to win a seat on the council, and only one term to be voted out. I think the people have spoken, and the words are proactive, not reactive. Yes Mr. Allen the city has lacked leadership, and for mer council members have done nothing but create their own empire; they still do behind the scenes. I owe the people my dedication to their best interests, not my own. I am not here to campaign, I am here to do what I feel is right. Bob, wasnt it you that said to me that we serve the citizens not the employees? Those in glass houses Benjamin J. Local Crestview News Bulletin | A3 Wednesday, August 10, 2011 I like what the mayors brought forward as far as the powers of the mayor, Council President Charles Baugh Jr., said, adding that he would like to see the mayor preside over council meetings. I think the council presi dent is somewhat hampered now, having to let all the oth er council members speak before he can speak and hav ing to pass the gavel when he wants to make a motion, Cadle said in agreement. Cadle said the council president could become a more active member in council debates, yet the mayor, as a nonvoting mem ber of the council, could con tinue in his current capacity as an adviser, meeting indi vidually with council mem bers without violating state Sunshine laws. The council also agreed with Cadle that voting to re move an elected ofcial cho sen by the people is a pretty big step and asked that the charter include provision for at least a two-thirds vote by the council rather than a simple majority. Under the current council composi tion, that would require four of the ve council members to vote in favor of removing an ofcial. After directing Admin istrative Services Director Mike Wing to incorporate all the recommendations into a new draft document, to be reviewed by the council as well as City Attorney Ben Holley, discussion turned to when the charter might be presented to voters. It was agreed that a substan tial voter education period should precede the vote. It would probably be in our best interest to have it on the general election in November 2012, Baugh said, which is a presidential elec tion. You would get a bigger citizen turnout, and it would give us a better snapshot of the peoples will. The next charter review meeting was set for Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. $ 20 00 Must present coupon. Lewis budget includes a re quest for an additional phone line for the fax and $15,000 to estab lish an e-book collection compat ible with patrons digital readers, such as Kindles and iPads. Lewis also requested a book budget of $40,000, restoring funds that were eliminated in the cur rent years budget, which forced the library to temporarily stop updating its collection, making some books, such as medical ref erences, out of date. This year I denitely need the book money, Lewis said. I would like to commend you on your rst time out as a depart ment head, Council President Charles Baugh Jr. said. You and your staff have done a very good job. We had so little money; we have been very frugal, Lewis replied. The Crestview Parks and Rec reation department has seen a dramatic increase in participa tion in the last year, Wing re ported, including both youth and adult sports players. Even more seniors are attending activities at the senior center in Old Spanish Trail Park than before, he said. Were seeing a rapid increase in participants in everything that we do, Wing said. Weve expanded our sports to give chil dren more things to do in the summertime. Even with more participants, Parks and Recreations $650,733 budget request is only $12,168, or 1.9 percent, over the current s cal year. The steepest increases include nearly $9,500 in utility services and $7,100 for operating supplies. The departments $434,117 request for personnel services is more than $4,000 less than the current budget year and repre sents more than $17,000 in savings from unscheduled overtime, com pensation time, retirement con tributions, group insurance and unemployment compensation. Our funding levels have re mained largely the same while weve increased the number of events that we host as well as the number of event locations, Wing said. Every one of these increases affects staff in a differ ent way. Wing also presented budget proposals for the other compo nents of the Administrative Ser vices department, including the community centers, which in clude the Crestview Community Center and the Warriors Hall au ditorium; growth management; building code inspections; and the geographic information sys tem (GIS). Personnel services for the Ad ministrative Services department would increase $2,524, or less than half a percent, to $739,600, a signicant portion of the depart ments $825,191 requested bud get. A proposed salary increase of 7.2 percent would be offset by a decrease in personnel that would eliminate $19,500 in retirement contributions and $15,000 in un employment compensation. Community Centers became a city department in 2008, and its $79,415 budget request is a 9.3 percent increase over the current scal year. Some of the requested increase represents increased stafng, though both employees serving the department work on a part-time basis. So far, 124 events have been held between the two buildings this scal year, Wing reported. Were seeing more citizen use of those facilities, Wing said, though with a decrease in user fees, income is also down, he added. Requested operating expens es for the community centers de creased by 2.3 percent to $38,747, while personnel services would increase $11,740 to $40,668, or 40.6 percent, under the budget. Youve done pretty well with your budget for Administrative Services, Baugh said. I have to give each department a star for operating with the money that you have. Weve been extremely tight, Ill be honest with you, Wing said. Unlike last year, how ever, there will be no tax exemptions this year on books priced at $50 or less. Some local shoppers, like Crestview resident Reese Williamson, have been buying school supplies early to prevent having to buy everything at once. Williamson, who was shopping recently at Sta ples in Crestview with her three children, said she has been looking for great bar gains. I have three lists, and they love Trapper Keepers, so we bought those rst, Williamson said. The list of items that are tax-free during the sales holiday changes from year to year. Clothing items that will be tax-free this year include bathing suits, belts, base ball caps, cleats, diaper bags, bibs, dresses, jackets, formal wear, lab coats, mar tial arts attire, pants, purs es, Scout uniforms, shorts, socks, sweaters, ties and wallets. School supplies that will be tax-exempt include com passes, protractors, com puter ash drives, rulers, glue products, adhesive tapes, scissors, paper notebook, poster, construc tion folders, highlighters, colored pencils, markers, crayons, lunch boxes, note books and ller paper, as well as legal pads, binders, pencils, pens and erasers. Rodney Nobles, deputy superintendent of op erations for the Okaloosa County School District, said many teachers put donation items on their classroom lists, but par ents are not required to buy them. Budget cutbacks are seen everywhere, and the teachers have special proj ects and often ask for dona tions toward those, Nobles said. McKay Jenkins was a man who never smoked, ate right and got plenty of exercise. After completing a routine checkup, he was shocked upon hearing he had developed a tumor. As a result of this wake-up call he decided to investigate the effects chemicals, those considered hazardous as well as those deemed safe, have on the human body when exposed through everyday occurrences and objects. This eyeopening book exposes the lack of proper regulation on the use of toxic chemicals and the ubiquity of toxins in our lives. Many of us get discouraged when we hear negative reports about local restaurants, but home kitchens also can provide a welcoming environment for germs and food-borne microorganisms. A clean kitchen can prevent food borne and other illnesses such as the common cold or u. And, theres more good news: Keeping a kitchen clean need not be difcult, said Valentina Remig, a food safety and nutrition specialist and former faculty member at K-State, who developed a USDA-funded food safety campaign. Remig recommends making a homemade sanitizing solution by adding one tablespoon of household bleach to one gallon of water; transfer the solution to a spray bottle for use as needed, and, as with other cleaning products, label the sanitizing solution and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Use the sanitizing solution on countertops and other surfaces that come in contact with food before and after food preparation, she said. Hot soapy water and a clean rinse also will work, said Remig, who advised sanitizing cupboard handles, knobs and drawer pulls; refrigerator and range handles, acontrols and keypads on appliances; faucets, and the kitchen telephone. Cleaning tips include: Dedicate one cutting board for meats and poultry, and another for vegetables; sanitize cutting boards after each use, and replace when boards become worn. Cuts and grooves can harbor bacteria. Change dishcloths daily; choose reusable dishcloths that can be laundered in hot water, or disposable cloths. Change and sanitize scrubbers and sponges or replace them often. Consult appliance manufacturers instructions, and clean refrigerator and freezer thoroughly by removing shelves and bins at least every three months; defrost ice build-up as needed. Other selection factors include demonstrated community support and recognition by others throughout the year. Being chose Woman of the Year is a great honor, one that is highly respected by all ABWA members, Kirkland said. The guest speaker for the meeting was Tammy McDaniel, owner and manager of Tammys Journeys in Fort Walton Beach. Her topic for the evening was the importance of becoming involved, taking risk and allowing yourself to grow, even when you may not think you can do it. She lled the room with encouraging motivation for our members to absorb, Kirkland said. Currently a candidate for ABWA National District I vice president, McDaniel has held several positions with the ABWA Emerald Coast chapter, including Woman of the Year and president of both the chapter and council. ABWA Crestviews Working Women Express Network was established in 2009 and has more than 30 members. This event was part of their membership campaign designed to invite businesswomen from the community to learn more about the organization. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at Christophers Uncorked Bistro on Main Street in historic downtown Crestview. Guests are always welcome and do not need a reservation. The Crestview Quarterback Club has spared no expense: New seating will be installed at Jack Foster Stadi um in time for the Sept. 9 home opener against Escambia. Our main focus is always the play ers and team, club president Roger Berry said. This year we are trying to give something back to the commu nity, as well be upgrading the reserve seating section with comfortable highback chairs. Berry said the chairs, which have armrests, will be spaced far enough apart to give fans a little extra room. Weve knocked the number (of seats) down a little bit, he said. It was 28 seats per row, but we went down to 26 seats per row to give more space and make it worth your while to come in and get a little more space and to get that arm room. The seats will be installed by the Quarterback Club around the middle of the month. They are red in color with a big gigantic C in the middle of them. It will not only enhance the seat ing for the comfort of our fans, but it will enhance the view (appearance) of our stadium as well. Reserved seating is on sale from 8 a.m. to noon through Aug. 22 in the high school main ofce for returning season ticket holders. Remaining re served seats will go on sale Aug. 23. In addition to seating, fans can pur chase reserved parking for $25 with premium access to Jack Foster Sta dium. The Quarterback Club also is offering a reserved parking section for $20 that will be available for tailgating on the practice eld. Reserved parking also can be pur chased at the school ofce daily from 8 a.m. to noon. By Randy Dickson randyd@crestviewbulletin.com Ill admit that I didnt walk to school barefoot, 10 miles through the snow, uphill both ways. But rain or shine, I did usually make the 2-mile walk home from school, and I did endure two-a-day football practices. Back in another time in place when football was a seasonal sport and not a year-round exercise, it seemed to make sense to bring players into camp a few weeks early to work the offseason out of their system. I guess the logic was if you could get players in shape by practicing them, you could get them in shape twice as fast by having them practice twice a day. Football players at every level from the pros to college and on down to high school endured the infamous practice sessions. Perhaps none was more infamous than the 1954 Texas A&M camp held at Junction, Texas, under coach Paul Bear Bryant. About 100 players arrived at the camp, and only 35 survived the 10-day test of survival. And though most 40 and 50-something ex football players like to talk about how tough things were, none of us ever went through a camp anything like Junction. It has been 36 years since the last of my two-a-day practices on what Im sure was a warm late August evening in Gulf Breeze way back in 1975. I imagine we did the standard stretching and agility drills of the day. There were monkey rolls, and practice wouldnt have been the same without a lively session of Bull in the Ring. Im guessing the practice, which started at 3 p.m., lasted three or three-and-a-half hours, and there might have been one water break, maybe two if we were lucky. Just when we thought we couldnt go another step, the hitting would stop, and wind sprints in full gear would begin. The running seemed to last forever, but I doubt if we actually ran more than 15 or 20 minutes. When two-a-days ended, we not only were in football shape and game ready, but we were ready to tackle anything the upcoming year would send our way. Because many teams back then didnt have the summer programs, two-a-days also served as a time for bonding and building the chemistry so important for the grueling season. Today, those long ago two-a-day practices are a source of pride and legendary stories that have the practices increasing in duration and difculty with each passing year. Come to think of it, maybe I did walk to school barefoot, 10 miles through the snow, uphill both ways. And to think, after all that, I still managed to make it through twoa-days. Bulldogs) weve ever pulled off, Crestview Quarterback Club president Roger Berry said. We will actually have ev ery kid and everyone that will put on a football jersey this year in Crestview at the Meet the Bulldogs Night. They will be in troduced or playing in a scrim mage that night. Thats both middle schools, the city league and all their ve, six, seven teams they have. CAYA and all their teams, the semi-pro team and, of course, our JV, freshman and varsity teams will be scrimmaging as well. So it will be a big night of football. The opening ceremony is set for 6 p.m. and will be followed by a scrimmage between Davidson and Walton County. Shoal River will scrimmage Walton County next. The reworks display and light show will start at 8:30 p.m. and will be followed by the high school scrimmages. Any time you can do stuff like this as far as a football coach, its a positive, rst-year Crestview coach Kevin Pettis said. When you are trying to get things ironed out that you can go out there and scrimmage and get your kids in an atmosphere that is not like practice, it is a good thing. It is something you can draw from later on in the year. Its the weekend before the opening game, and we are going to go out there and practice un der the lights and have a game environment. We are going to use that as a practice because it is a week away from our game. We are going to go out there and we are going to be in full pads, and we are going to do what we do. Pettis said he is looking for ward to watching Davidson and Shoal River play as well so he can get a look at his future Bull dogs. Berry said the night is more than just an opportunity for fans to see the local football teams. For some players, the experi ence is as close as they will ever get to the feel of taking the eld in a big-time college or profes sional game. Meet the Bulldogs Night is not only for the people to see the teams, but its special for those players, he said. They get to come out to reworks and the sights and sounds. They come out to the smoke, and the crowd is cheering and the band is play ing. It pumps them up as well. It makes them feel like rock stars. All of them, from 5 years old to 30 years old, it makes them feel like they are at a college game. FILE PHOTO Dakota Dean barks out signals during the scrimmage at the 2010 Meet the Bulldogs Night. I cant get away from the game, he said. I love it that much. I just like being around these guys that are out here and want to work. I know from my experience that baseball is not a game that you can just play during baseball season. It has to be something that you keep working at, or you are going to pick right up where you left off instead of improving every year. Hayes classes are open for players age 8 and up through high school. The cost is $45 for a one-hour session. He also is considering a package discount, as well as a discount for refer rals. Sessions will be held at the Crestview High School batting cages, but Hayes said he is more than willing to work with someone at home if they have a batting cage. Crestview baseball coach Tim Gillis gave a ringing en dorsement for his former play er. First of all, Trey is the epit ome of a hard worker, and hes got tremendous character, Gillis said. If I was going to let my kid learn from anybody and spend time with anybody, Trey Hayes would be at the top of the list. Hes just a super human be ing, and he obviously played at a very high level. He played and earned his way everywhere hes been, and hes done a heck of a job. There are really not a lot of secrets in this game. Its sticking to what you do and doing it relentlessly, and thats what Trey has always done. Hitting sessions will focus on such things as having proper balance with a swing, learning to hit a ball where it is pitched and knowing the strike zone. Baseball, really no mat ter what level, a lot of it comes down to your balance, and thats the key thing even in young guys, Hayes said. If their bal ance is on, they are going to hit well. Major Leaguers, if they have balance, they are going to hit well. You can see the slow (mo tion) shots of it. Thats an ad vantage about having a one-onone thing. You are not neces sarily stuck with a group, and it can play to your strengths and weaknesses and what you need, too. Hayes prefers the hands-on approach to teaching hitting, but if needed he said he is will ing to lm players and use that as a teaching tool. I can video tape if there is something Im trying to teach a person and they are not getting it, he said. Ill video tape and show it to them and say, This is what it looks like. I know it feels like you are doing this, but this is what is actually going on. Thats a useful tool. Hayes said parents would always be welcome to video the hitting sessions. With no other hitting school available in Crestview, Hayes is hoping to nd a niche in the community that will help aspir ing young players. Throughout my career, Ive been blessed to play with coaches that love the game and have had success themselves, Hayes said. They were able to teach me the fundamentals that I build on. They taught me how to work so I feel like I have a lot to offer. For more information on the Trey Hayes Hitting School, call Hayes at 758-0794. Crestview News Bulletin | B3 Wednesday, August 10, 2011 REAL OR FAKE? Can you tell which signatures are real and which are fake? You can check your answers below the photos. THE BEATLES BABE RUTH Sports memorabilia expert can tell fake from priceless By Doug Irving Freedom News Service Joe Orlandos baseball card career didnt be gin with much promise. It began, instead, with a 1975 Topps Jay Johnstone card. He was just a kid and didnt know that the card he was pointing at under the card-shop glass was next to worthless. He doesnt make that mistake anymore. Today, Orlando oversees one of the most prominent card and memorabilia-grading ser vices in the country. Thousands of cards and autographs pour into his companys headquar ters every month, sent by collectors who want to know that their piece of the game is the real thing. Most of the time, the cards and other memo rabilia are common enough, worth a $20 bill or two. But sometimes Well, sometimes Orlando gets reminded that hes come a long way from that 1975 Jay John stone. The collector in me would love to just sit down here, Orlando says as he walks through a basement hallway. He leads the way past a secu rity desk, past the heavy door of a vault and into a dimly lit workroom. Its late in the day, and most of the card grad ers have gone home. But a few are still at their desks, turning over baseball cards in their hands under bright-light magniers the way a jeweler might study a diamond. This is the dream job a fth-grader might conjure up for a what-do-you-want-to-be-whenyou-grow-up essay: shufing through early Ken Griffeys and Albert Pujolses, maybe the occa sional Mantle or Gehrig. Squinting at the foun tain pen ourishes on an old ball and knowing that, yes, the Babe himself signed it. One of the graders, 33-year-old David Lin, looks up from a stack of Griffey rookie cards just long enough to offer, I love this job. Orlando is the president here, in a plain ofce building in an equally plain Santa Ana, Calif., of ce park. Nothing but a sign in the lobby says that this is where Ted Williamses, Michael Jor dans and Muhammad Alis come to be judged: Professional Sports Authenticator. Collectors know it as PSA. It graded more than a million trading cards last year, authenti cated nearly 200,000 autographs and took in $9.7 million in net revenue for its parent company, Collectors Universe. The company is one of the most trusted and respected third-party authentication compa nies in the industry, said Ray Schulte, a spokes man for the National Sports Collectors Conven tion and owner of SchulteAuctions.com. As president, Orlando can spot the difference between the condent lines of an authentic Man tle autograph and the laborious script of a forg ery. But he leaves the authenticating to experts who can trace a baseball bat to a player based in part on the pine tar patterns on its barrel. Orlando is just 39, a former college catcher who speaks of baseball cards and sports mem orabilia as if they were works of art. He calls them pieces. Hes a lifelong collector who still rattles off stats and facts when he talks about some item thats come through for grading. Say, the bat that Kirk Gibson used for his arm-pumping home run in 1988. Theres something magical about the game equipment, Orlando said. These are the tools that they used to make history. Its pretty neat stuff. Orlando doesnt have many of his own cards or collectibles anymore not even that 1975 Jay Johnstone that got him started. He sold off most of his collection when he got the job as PSA pres ident in 2002, to avoid any conict of interest. But being president of a company like PSA puts him in contact with pieces of sports history that most collectors could only dream of. When Mark McGwire slammed his thenrecord 70th home run in 1998, it was PSA that endorsed the authentication on the game ball. When Shoeless Joe Jacksons game bat went to auction in 2001, it was PSA that marked it as real. The company has certied Super Bowl game balls, World Series rings and more Mickey Man tle baseball cards than Orlando can remember. It once authenticated an autographed handprint of Babe Ruth. But its most famous call involved an excep tionally rare 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card, often called the Holy Grail of card collecting. PSA graded the cards quality an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. New York Daily News reporters investi gated and later published a book concluding the card had been cut from a sheet long after it was printed. Orlando wasnt yet at the company when that card came through. But he defended the grade: In our opinion, its completely authentic. We stand by it, absolutely. The at-out coolest item hes ever seen had a much more obvious history. On April 18, 1923, Babe Ruth hit a three-run home run to lead the Yankees over the Red Sox on the rst day of play at Yankee Stadium. Ruth signed the bat and delivered it to a boy who had won a Los Angeles youth home run contest. Orlando was at a sports convention several years ago when an auction house approached him with a club of old wood. It weighed at least a dozen ounces more than even the heaviest mod ern bat, and it still had that signature. It was Ruths game bat from Opening Day of the House that Ruth Built. When you pick it up and hold it in your hand, Orlando says now, thats when you say My job is pretty great. Special to the News Bulletin TALLAHASSEE Florida State University football head coach Jimbo Fisher and his wife, Can di, on July 25 announced the creation of a new national fund to fuel the quest for a cure for Fanconi anemia, a very rare lifethreatening disorder that aficts their 6-year-old son, Ethan, and many others. One thing Ive learned as a football coach is to never accept defeat, Fisher said. We are in this to win the ght against Fan coni anemia on behalf of all the children who share this struggle with Ethan. Money raised through a new campaign called OnaKwest for a Cure will support research into Fanconi anemia at the Uni versity of Minnesota, one of the leading universities pioneering better ways to treat the disorder, in advance of nding a cure. The campaign will raise research dol lars for the Kidz 1st Fund, just es tablished by the Fishers, through the sale of T-shirts, wristbands and other products and through online donations. Fisher said he will donate all fees associated with his public speaking engage ments to the fund. This type of hereditary ane mia, primarily a blood disease, can affect all systems in the body and leads to bone marrow fail ure. For decades, the disorder was thought to be untreatable, but promising advances in medi cal research have improved the prognosis. To extend their lives, most children suffering from Fanconi anemia will require a stem cell transplant, either bone marrow or cord blood, yet many wait years to nd a donor who is a perfect match or never nd one. For that reason, the Fishers also are making a widespread appeal for people to join the Na tional Marrow Donor Registry to determine if they are a match for any of the thousands of people whose lives depend on a bone marrow transplant. The news that Ethan has this disease is a call to action for us, and we hope to use our situation to improve the chances of every child whose life may be extend ed and improved by advances against this illness, Candi Fish er said. We ask for your prayers, your participation in the bone marrow donor registry and your contribution to speed up the race for a cure. Leading Fanconi anemia re searcher Margaret MacMillan, a pediatric blood and marrow trans plant physician at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Childrens Hospital, said the fundraising efforts planned by the Fishers could be a game changer in the ght against Fanconi anemia. Through research, improve ments are made each year in treating patients with Fanconi anemia, improvements that have changed the survival rate after unrelated donor bone marrow transplant for this disease from less than 30 percent to greater than 80 percent in the last 15 years, MacMillan said. It is with research that we have changed whats possible for children just like Ethan. But there is much more to do. We will not stop until we have 100 percent survival. To this end, we are investigating safer treat ments, even treatments that may eliminate the need for transplant in the future. Our team has al ready changed the practice of medicine for Fanconi anemia and other diseases, and we aim to do it again. With philanthropic sup port, we can give patients like Ethan and his family hope for a healthy and happy future. FSU Athletics Director Randy Spetman said the Fishers have the prayers of the FSU commu nity. They have the support of the entire Seminole family, and we all are teammates for Ethan as he courageously battles this dis ease, Spetman said. The Kidz 1st Fund, ghting Fanconi anemia, is afliated with the Alma Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprot charity that primar ily supports children and family causes, distributing more than $5 million to date. The OnaKwest for a Cure campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about Fanconi ane mia and helping to fund research for nding a cure.
