Amateur radio buffshave a Field Day

Chayne Sparagowski
Crestview News Bulletin
As you read this, anten-
nas rose above the horizon
with the sun, radios are
buzzing, humming, and
squealing. Cars with mul-
tiple antennas sticking up
from all over have begun
to fill the area all around.
While this may sound like
a local invasion, it's some-
thing much bigger.
Field Day, one of the
biggest events in Ameri-
can amateur radio, is this
weekend. Amateur radio
operators all over the
country set up at camp-
grounds, clubhouses,

Laurel Hill

council

talks trash

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
At Thursday's meeting of
the Laurel Hill City Council, Bill
Schwab, representing Trash
Can Company II, the city's
trash collection firm, discussed
billing concerns. The city pays
Schwab's firm at the end of the
month, collecting trash service
payments from citizens at the
same time it collects water pay-
ments.
Schwab requested his firm
receive payment by the 10th of
each month. Confusion seemed
to stem from billing customers
in advance of service, due the
following month. It is difficult to
keep track of who is not paying
their bill, resulting in a few resi-
dences receiving free garbage
pick-up, Schwab explained.
The city collects payments
froni about /230 households per
month, city clerk Howard,Jones
said.
"We are flexible. We are
willing to work with the city,"
Schwab said.
Jones said that under the
new accounting system the city
installed, the city can easily ac-
commodate Schwab's request.
"We can issue a check when-
ever the council wishes," Jones
.said.
"Nobody's complaining
about this company's service,"
stressed Mayor Ferrin Camp-
bell Jr., expressing the city's de-
sire to have contracts with local
businesses whenever possible.
Jones suggested- a compro-
mise by which the city would
pay Trash Can Company II by
the 21st of the month based on
collections it will have collected
to that date. It would also share
its collections report with the
company.
In another matter, Schwab
said there is "some confusion"
about the use of the trash bins
the company distributed to cus-
tomers. People have been plac-
ing them the wrong way, or pil-
ing trash next to them, negating
the. benefits of the automated
pick-up mechanism on the gar-
bage truck.
Schwab reminded citizens
that on the first of each month
his firm picks up oversized rub-
bish. "No batteries, no tires on
rims, but if you have appliances,
we will pick them up," he said.
"You can put your tires out,
you just can't have them on the
rim."
In other business:
At the end of July the coun-
cil will meet as the local planning
agency to adopt the comprehen-
sive city planning report after
the meeting is properly adver-
tised. It will then be reported in
August to the state Department
'of Community Affairs.
During the report by Fire
Chief Jeff Sory, read by Jones,
the council approved the fire
department's request to apply
for a FEMA grant to construct
a new fire station. The grant
would cover 100 percent of the
cost.
The only requirement is that
the city provide the land. City-

tion, Jones read. The grant
would not cover furnishings,
including equipment and
apparatus.
The council also
approved an interlocal
agreement with Okaloosa
County to provide dis-
patch services, and also
payment of a monthly fee
for the fire department's
radio system of $9 per month
for each of eight radios.
*. Roadside patching,
pothole patching, park
clean-up and similar proj-
ects will be undertaken
next week by a team of
state prison trustees to be
overseen by a city employ-
ee, reported Jones during

his report. There is no cost
to the city for the service.
The city of Crestview
has offered Laurel Hill two
retired Ford Crown Victo-
ria police cruisers, Jones
reported. One could be
used as the fire chief's car,
he said, as the current ve-
hicle is experiencing me-
chanical troubles.
"I recommend accept-
ing them as the city is not
in the position to be buying
vehicles right now," Jones
said. The council unani-
mously and gratefully ac-
cepted Crestview's gift.
The council agreed
that it will meet next on
July 23.

The North Okaloosa
Amateur Radio Club (NO-
ARC) will operate again this
year from the Dorcas Fire
Department Station #42,
on U.S. Highway 90, 8 miles
east of the S.R. 85 intersec-
tion.
"We want to invite anyone
that is interested in amateur
radio to come out to visit our
Field Day event this week-
end," said NOARC presi-
dent Bob Walker, N4CU. "If
you ever wondered' what it
was that 'hams' do, this is
a good time to find out. You
might even get to talk to
someone in a distant coun-
try or have a conversation
with someone by satellite
amateur radio.
"Our club has been for-
tunate to be able to set up
our operating -stations at
the Dorcas Fire Station #42
for three years now and we
sincerely appreciate that,"
Walker emphasized. '"We're
very glad that the Dorcas
Fire Department volun-
teers are joining us today
with their yard sale and
bake sale."
The money raised dur-
ing the sales will go towards
keeping the department up
and running.
If you're not yet a ham

but interested in amateur
radio, you'll want to visit
the GOTA (Get On The Air)
station. It is designed for
anyone that is not active
in radio, or who just wants
to give ham radio a try; You
can try making contacts,
local .or long distance, and
maybe even around the
world.
NOARC activities di-
rector Cal Zethmayer,
W4GMH, wants to extend
the club's invitation to more
than just the general public,
encouraging all who "have
an amateur license but are
not actively on the air, [to]
come on out and join us."
.. The North Okaloosa
Amateur Radio Club began
to set up antennas and the
operating stations early
this morning. They hope to
have four to five stations on
the air at any time starting
at 1 p.m.
"The operations will go
through the night until we
just wear out on Sunday,"
said Zethmayer.
This event is sure to
bring people together. It
may be over the airwaves,
or as simple as getting to
know your local volunteer
firefighters and amateur
radio operators.

'What we miss by be

When we write these
articles, we are given a
subject to write about
This month we are using
"selfishness" for a sub-
ject. My first thoughts
went to the two women
who had both given birth DR. D
to a baby and one of the CADE
babies died. Victo
Both mothers claimed Vitorshi
the live baby. The "wise Worshi
judge" decided to divide the live
baby between the two women.
The real mother said, "no, give
the baby to her.",
The real mother did not want
her baby to die, so she was willing
to give her baby away. The moth-
er of the dead baby was so selfish
that she was willing to take half
of a dead baby. This let the judge
know who was the real mother.
With that thought, the Lord re-
minded me of a scripture where
Paul said, "remember the Words

of the Lord Jesus, how He
said, It is more blessed to
give than to receive."
At first, I thought how
strange and then I began
to realize that people who
are selfish do not know
the joy of giving. I often
ask people to stretch
their hands out toward
me. While you are read-
ing this, take the .time

right now and stretch your hand
out. If it is turned up, you are
expecting to receive. But if it is
turned down, you are a giver.
We have raised a society that
is takers and not givers. Every
child that has ever shared with
another child did not start out
sharing. We had to teach them
to share. Somewhere along the
way, we forgot to continue to
teach that lesson.
When I first became a Chris-
tian 35 years ago, I thought who-

said that, but I was being selfish
and only wanting to be blessed
by someone else. Looking back,
I now know I am much more
blessed by giving than I am by
receiving.
My family and I often receive
gifts from people who need
things a lot more than we do,
but I have learned when I don't
accept those gifts, I am robbing
them of a blessing.
If you find yourself being
selfish, find someone who is in
need or just someone you wapt
to bless and give them a special
gift. You will soon realize that you
are being blessed for thinking of
others.
When Jesus talked about it
being more blessed to give than
receive, He was referring to
our need to support the weak.
He said, "I have showed you all
things," which means He ,is the
example for us to follow.

sh'

The greatest example of not
being selfish was Jesus going to
a cross and giving His life for us
that we could be counted righ-
teous by His death.
John 3:16 says, "For God so
loved the world that He gave
His only Begotten Son, that who-
soever believes in Him should
not perish, but have everlasting
life."
Let me encourage you to al-
ways be blessed by giving. Re-
member, there is nothing selfish
about the Lord Jesus Christ.

ship Center located one mile

ing worship is at 10:30 a.m. and

Little visitors pick berries; community offers support

"Summertime and
the living is easy"...
words to a yesteryear
song vacationers must be ..
singing on the beaches.
Grandchildren from
Georgia are making plans 4 _
to visit soon, and I am
leaving the blueberry UP ON
picking to the great- Estelle
grandchildren! They have
so much vim and vigor, it does my
heart good to see them in a berry
picking contest.
Thanks to Charlie Heisler
for getting the golf cart running
smoothly for berry picking time.
The visiting children will enjoy
driving on the trail beyond the
garden after they finish picking
berries.

looking nice. I appreciate
the good service we all get
at a reasonable price.
I received a call from
a reader with questions
about the Rogers family.
They happen to be another
family line, but I enjoyed
the talk with her about our
families. Daily life is much

the same with all generations.
Supporting each other, whenever
friends are getting acquainted
with a new person is encouraging.
Thanks, Mrs. Kennedy, for the
lively conversation.
Doug recently had a short stay
at Silvercrest Manor in Crestview.
He was treated by lovely
professional caregivers in a gentle
manner. My special thanks to Meg,
Barbara, Carrie and Lorene for
the extra miles they continue to
go on behalf of patients and their
families. I highly recommend this

facility for their care and concern.
For more information, call 850-682-
1903.
After several weeks of rehab
at Silvercrest Manor, Doug is at
Carington Manor in Crestview,
a secure assisted living facility
designed to care for those with
dementia-related diseases,,in a
comfortable environment. We
hope to see continued future
improvements in his health.
I am impressed with the staff
at Carington Manor and the
beautiful facility on East James
Lee Blvd.
The Alzheimer Support group
is held on the third Thursday
at the Baptist Church activities
building at 2 p.m. You are
encouraged to attend one of these
support group meetings with your
neighbors going through similar
situations.
I never leave a gathering
without good information and

support. I hope you will mark your
calendar for this special monthly
event. For more information, call
Support Group leader Carolyn
Williams at 850-598-1057.
On June 18, the Alzheimer's
support group enjoyed a special
guest speaker, Angela Warren,
elder law attorney. She gave
us needed information and the
opportunity to ask questions from
the lively group present.
The Lady Hilltoppers meet on
the third Tuesday of the month
at the Laurel Hill Grill at 11 a.m.
This is a small neighborhood
group welcoming others to join
them for a dutch-treat fellowship
lunch in the private dining space
rightly named the Hobo Room.
Most of the lunches end with
laughter and an ice cream cone!
Roger G. Smith, 80, a resident
of Laurel Hill, passed away in a
Crestview hospital Sunday, June
14, 2009. He is survived by his wife,

Sarah Rhodes Smith, of Laurel
Hill, owner of The What's It
Shop on North SR 85. My sincere
condolences to the Smith family.
Alpha & Omega house cleaning
services are offered by Laurel
Hill owner, Carla D. Steele. She
is licensed and insured, and
offers free estimates for all your
cleaning needs. She furnishes
all cleaning supplies and leaves
your house clean from bottom to
top. Call 850-546-1225 for more
information.
This month, the Red Hat
Society ladies met in Florala at
the Big R's Bed & Breakfast for
lunch. We decided our Christmas
Fling would be an overnight
stay in the warm atmosphere of
Sarah's Bed & Breakfast the first
Thursday ip December 2009.

Bad driving,

Unto the bleach
Guys, don't leave info
about female friends, no
matter how innocent the
relationship, on your com-
puter where a potentially
jealous girlfriend might dis-
cover it in your absence.
A Crestviewman learned
this lesson when his 26-
year-old girlfriend called
him at work to express her
displeasure about content
she found on his home com-
puter.

He advised her "he
would speak with her when
he got home." She "advised
him she would not be there
and she was sorry."
He was sorrier. Before
she split she kicked in his
bedroom door and doused
his living room and bed-
room with bleach, causing
nearly $4,000 in damages to
carpeting and leather furni-
ture.'
She was arrested on
criminal mischief charges,
while he has brighter and
whiter furnishings.

Or maybe they were

any event, two Crestview
women, 28 and 30 years old,
respectively, hitched a ride
and went shopping at a lo-

30-year-old had a trespass
warning.
A bit later they emerged
with their groceries: 10 cas-
es of beer.
Maybe in the excitement

approached them about the

leaving the $87.90 worth of

One woman was prompt-
ly arrested in the parking lot
of a nearby drugstore. The
other was apprehended in
the parking lot of a nearby
hospital.
"I didn't know she was
going to steal the beer,"
the 30-year-old, who was
nabbed at the hospital, told
officers. When asked who
she was referring to, she
"stated she didn't know the
other woman's name,"
Hope she finds out real

Pregnant women
get in altercation
A 25-year-old Crestview
woman was arrested on ag-
gravated battery charges
after she allegedly punched
her landlady in the eye.,
Both women are preg-
nant, according to police
reports.
According to her arrest
report, the arrested woman
was irate because her land-
lady accidentally walked

into the bathroom while her
husband was using the facil-
ity.
"Pleasantries were ex-
changed," the Sheriff's Of-
fice report stated.
Wifeypoo, informed of
the mishap, "became very
upset" because she believed
the landlady- "intentionally
walked into the bathroom
knowing [hubby] was pres-
ent."
After arguing with Hub-
by outside of the home,
Wifey entered the home
"and struck [the landlady]
in the left eye area with her
clinched fist."
After she boasted of the
assault to Hubby's sisters,
she was arrested.

They're not just leading

our State, they're leading

the Nation.

~ ~~ .r >b. . . .

In these tough times it isn't every day
that. you see leaders willing to stand
for health programs. But here in Florida,
our Governor and 129 members of the
Legislature are making our state a healthier
place to live and visit. In Florida, our lawmakers
have helped'prevent thousands of kids from
ever starting the lifetime addiction of smoking.

Their actions will prevent kids from starting to smoke,
cause many of today's smokers to quit, and will reduce our
state's health care costs in the long run.

Thank You to Governor Crist, President
Atwater, Speaker Cretul, Senator Deutch,
Representatives Waldman and Zapata, and
the rest of the Florida Legislature for your
commitment to a healthier Florida.

"Going on the road and
playing in front of a hos-
tile crowd will pay off next
year because we are re-
turningeveryone but one
senior from last year's
team."
The Hoboes should
have a .good mixture of
size and quickness this
coming year.
"It's a pretty big team,"
Zessin said. "It's not com-
parable to (District 1-1A
champion) Paxton, but
again we are 6-5, 6-4, 6-2.
That's pretty big for a 1A
team.
"It will give us some
depth. That's one of the
keys this year that's going
to help us a little bit that
we didn't have last year."
Zessin's approach is
an up-tempo, fast-paced
game that features strong
defense and taking the
first good opportunity on
offense. The added size
on the inside should help
trigger the fast break and
will pay dividends when
the Hoboes go to a half-
court set.
The taller players give
the Hoboes a bit of an ad-
vantage in the paint, but
Zessin has been experi-
menting with some other
players inside.
"I've got a couple of
kids that are a little stron-
ger, but they are not as tall
as my big guys," he said.
"But they seem to like to
get in there and get physi-
cal.
"Any time you can get
somebody that likes to get
physical (it's a positive).
Rebounding is all about
timing and positioning.

three or four times a day."
Reese decided to enroll at
Texas Tech this summer after
discussing things with coach Pat
Knight, son 'of legendary coach
Bobby Knight.
"I felt it was best for me com-
ing from JUCO," he said. "Com-
ing in both summer sessions will
get me ready for the practice in
the fall.
"We worked out (during the
summer at Gulf Coast), but wasn't
up-tempo like it is here. It was less
work.".
It's not as if Reese is experi-
encing Division I basketball for
the first time. He signed with
Southeastern Louisiana out of
high school, but was redshirted
his freshman year, leading to
his decision to transfer to Gulf
Coast.

life at a Big 12 school.
"Some of the stuff we did at
Southeast helped me," Reese
said, "but this is even a higher
level, and they expect a lot more
of you."
After a touch of being home-
sick, Reese is starting to enjoy his
life in the big time.
"The way they treat you is
great," he said. "Everybody treats
you good.
"They have so, many trainers
to help you with everything. And
they have great facilities."
The most important part of
the summer routine might be
building the chemistry with his
new teammates. Reese said they
are pretty good guys, and every,-
one is dedicated to helping Tech
rebound from a subpar 14-19 sea-
son.
As a junior college transfer,

Get re

Reese feels some added expecta-
tions to help turn things around
quickly.
"We (JUCO transfers) are
brought in to turn the program
right, away," he said. "There is
pressure for me and a couple of
other guys to help this program
back on track."
Reese plans to get the most
out of each new experience at
Texas Tech.
"I'm starting to like living in
Texas and meeting new people
out here and Bobby Knight," he
said. "Bobby Knight is a great
coach, and he knows a lot of peo-
ple that can help me.
"The football games here are
great, too. I attended one on my
visit. I think they are going to be
pretty good again this year.",
Reese has played in front of
packed houses at Laurel Hill and
Gulf Coast, but he knows those

crowds that number in the hun-
dreds can't prepare him for his
first game in the 15,000 seat Unit-
ed Spirit Arena.
"I have thought about it (play-
ing in the arena), but I don't have
anything to compare it to," he
said. "I'm going to have to deal
with it one day.
"It's going to be a different at-
mosphere, and I'm going to have
to play through it.
And how does he think he'll do
against some of the best college
players in the country?
"I asked the other players, and
they said it's different and ev-
erybody competes," Reese said.
"You might feel like a lottery pick
one night and nothing the next. I
won't know until I experience it
myself.
"I'm just looking forward to
finally getting established on and
off the court as a Big 12 played."

TECH-NICAL ADJUSTMENTS

Brad Reese

is getting

accustomed to

life and hoops

at Texas Tech

S' Randy Dickson
Crestview News Bulletin

Slowly but surely former Laurel Hill basketball star Brad Reese is getting used to
.his new surroundings.
Reese, who starred the past two years for Gulf Coast Community College in Pana-
ma City, is now deep in the heart of Texas in Lubbock, where he'll continue his career
at Texas Tech.
The transition from the Gulf Coast to the heartland of Texas has been somewhat of
an adjustment, as has the life at a big-time program.
"It was hard at first, but I'm getting used to the Division I work ethic," Reese said.
"You are training your body to play hard every possession. My body is more mature
than it was at the high school level, so I'll be OK.
"I just need to work on playing hard every possession and going (through workouts)

Hobo hoopsters' June hoppin' with activity

Crestview News Bulletin

LAUREL HILL It has
been a busy month of June
for Laurel Hill's boys bas-
ketball team.
The Hoboes have been
working hard as they pre-
pare for the 2009-10 sea-
son.
Laurel Hill spent much
of the month playing-in a
Tuesday and Thursday
summer league with other
teams from Okaloosa and
Walton counties. When
they weren't playing
games, the Hoboes were
lifting weights or shooting
baskets in an open ,gym.
Laurel Hill plays its fi-
nal set of games Tuesday
at Baker before taking a
break for the remainder of
the summer.
Hobo coach Kent Zessin
said things were going as
expected.
"We are accomplish-
ing what we need to ac-
complish," he said. "The
main things we try to ac-
complish in the summer
is to pick up our defense,
work on our fundamentals
and just try to explore new
things as individuals.
"We try ,to go out and
build confidence. as the
.individual player. That's
our main goal, is to just to
let them go out and play
the game hard, but at the
same time try to develop
your game and try things
and see if it works."
Zessin also tries to

'I think summer

the chemistry
there, but at the
same time do
some individual
work and gofrom

develop the intangible
things, such as team unity
and chemistry.
"I think summer is a
time to build team unity
a little bit and keep the
chemistry there, but at
the same time do some in-
dividual work and go from
there," he said.
Unity and chemistry
should come fairly eas-
ily to, a Laurel Hill team
that lost just one player,
Will Sherwood, from last
year's District 1-1A run-
ner-up squad.
"For us to go to the state
playoffs again for the sixth
year in a row was big,"
Zessin said. "Even though
we didn't come out victori-
ous in the first round, we
got an extra game that 75
