CRESTVIEW -A "welcome home" parade
being held at 1:45 this afternoon in Navarre has
special meaning for a proud Crestview father.
Earl Moore's son, David, is the honoree.
Not quite 19, David is a two-year Army
veteran who has just returned from his first
tour of duty in Iraq. Wounded in the line of
duty, David now wears the Purple Heart.
While he recuperates, David's duty station
will be Fort Bragg. But he's not about to let
being wounded keep him from his duty, Moore

said.
"He's wanting to go back
already."
AfterDavid's older brother
Kevin, now a drill instructor
in Fort Jackson, S.C., did
his tour of duty in Iraq, "that
kinda got David interested
in joining" the Army, Moore
said.
Upon entering Crestview
High School, "he joined
ROTC as soon as he was old
enough," Moore continued.

David later moved to Navarre

did his training at Fort Benning in

Almost weekly an urban
legend descends into my
e-mail inbox, sent by well-
meaning friends who, "just
to be on the safe side,"
forward it to everyone in
their address book.
Instead of hitting
"forward," they really
should bookmark www.
snopes.com and go there
first.
So from time to time we
at the News Bulletin will
do what our friends aren't
and will look into the latest
urban legend.
A friend who works
at Eglin sent this week's,
which he (and 55 others)
received from a cousin.
"REMINDER: 12 days
from today, all cell phone
numbers are being released
to telemarketing companies

C..-1A. ix Ih J L -l I i 11 .IuiVJ.
CALLS!" it concluded, all in
caps, which adds even more
to its apparent urgency.
Off to Snopes I went, and
found this old favorite's
been bouncing around the
Internet since 2004.
"The panic-inducing
e-mails have grown out a
misunderstanding about
the proposed creation
of a wireless directory
assistance service," the
Snopes site said.
The directory under
consideration would
be produced by the
cooperation of several
wireless providers, some of
which have since pulled out
of the proposed system.
But the "directory"
would not be "published"
- it's merely a database
- and your cell phone
number would only be
included if you specifically
"opted in." And, mindful
of their customers' privacy

never be made available to
telemarketers.
The Federal Trade
Commission has even
weighed into the matter,
and notes on their Web
site, "Telemarketing to cell
phone numbers has always
been illegal in most cases
and will continue to be
so." There's a link to the
commission's release in
the Snopes article.
As for the impending
deadline, "'There is no
deadline. There has
never been a deadline
to register'" Snopes
quoted the FTC's Lois
Greisman, who oversees
the National Do Not Call
Registry (which does not
maintain separate registries
for cell phones and land
lines. It's all one registry).
For the complete and
fascinating story, visit www.

business / cell411.asp.

"The Dangerous Book
for Boys" by Conn and
Hal Iggulden J 031.02
Igg Already a runaway
hit in England, this revised
American edition is rapidly
making its way up all
the U. S. bestseller lists
too, including the New
York Times, Publishers
Weekly, and the Wall

Street Journal. This book
for every boy from 8 to 80
covers essential boyhood
skills such as building tree
houses, learning how to
fish, finding true north, and
even answering the age old
question of what the big
deal with girls is. It is an
intentionally old-fashioned
and politically incorrect
eclectic collection which
addresses the undeniable
boy-appeal of certain facts
and activities. Yes, as the
mother of four of them,
boys ARE different from
girls, and raising them
CAN be dangerous-we've
gone through everything
from potato guns to treetop
zip lines.

"I got to see the police

Johnson said. "They just
told me to sit still and don't

"When I made my turn,.
I thought it was a tree

snagged.
"I don't really get nervous
when something happens,"
said the 50-year trucking

shaking."
An initial report indicated
a construction crew working
the previous evening at a
site two blocks away on
Hickory Avenue may have
downed a tree that struck
and lowered power lines in
the neighborhood, causing
several to hang lower.
Gulf Power spokesperson

Police Department officers

at the scene, however,
were unable to confirm the
report.
Erickson said the utility
company would have
to replace a transformer
that was damaged in the
incident.
Several wires also had to
be restrung and at least one
power pole was replaced.
At least four businesses
in the area lost power, she
said.
Power was restored and
crews were starting to clear
the scene around 10:30 a.m.,
Erickson said.
Before their lights were
restored, insurance agents
Chris Palm and Lynn Maltese
stood outside their Allstate
office across the street from
the scene. At their feet lay a
severed cable.
"This is our phone and
computer line right here,"
said Palm, nudging the
cable with his foot.
"It's going to be a while
until we're up and running,"
added Maltese.

FROM THE identification versus

SPULPTJr. commitment
Michael Green Jr.

And in that day seven women
shall take hold of one man, saying,
we will eat our own bread, and
wear our own apparel: only let
us be called by thy name, to take
away our reproach. Isaiah 4:1
The above mentioned
verse is used to illustrate
the apostasy of the nation of
Judah and Jerusalem during
the time of the prophet Isaiah.
They had departed from the
God of Heaven and turned
their own way. Isaiah chapter
3 records that Judah had
become prideful and was no
longer dependent upon God.
They were full of haughtiness
in their outward actions and
in their hearts (V.16). This
displeased the Lord and he
judged his nation. They were
smitten with disease (V.17),
their beauty was taken away
(V.24), and they suffered
military defeat (V.25).
The attitude of the nation
Judah was summarized
in the illustration of Isaiah
4:1. The picture that Isaiah
provides us with is one of
seven women wanting to
identify with a man only to
be called by his name. In all
other aspects of their life they
wanted to do as they pleased
without commitment towards
another. Judah wanted to be
identified with the Lord, but

refused any commitment to
his commandments and laws.
This ancient problem is very
similar to the attitude that
is prominent in our country
today. Many Christians want
to be identified with the Lord
in name only. They do not
want to submit themselves
to the truth of the Bible or
follow his commandments
for Christian living. We want
to eat our own bread, wear
our own apparel and only
be called by the name of the
Lord. Like Judah of old, God is
not pleased with this attitude
and will not bless us. He
requires commitment from his
disciples.
How are we to be
committed to the Lord? First
we should commit ourselves
to his word. In Psalms 119:2
David writes, "Blessed are
they that keep his testimonies,
and that seek him with the
whole heart." The Bible
contains the testimonies of
the Lord. In has all that God
wanted to communicate to
his people. We do not need
to seek any other authority
than the word of God for our
instruction and guidance.
How many times do we
only identify with the Bible?
We keep one on our desk,
in our car, or in a prominent

place in our home, but we
never commit to reading it
or memorizing the principles
and precepts. We might
memorize a few key verses
to recite to others but never
apply it in our daily walk.
The Apostle Paul writes in
2 Timothy 2:15 to, "Study to
shew thyself approved unto
God, a workman that needeth
not to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the word of truth."
If we are going to obtain the
approval of God in the area
of his word, them we must be
wholeheartedly committed
to living according to Biblical
doctrine /practice. A mere
involvement with his Bible
will not suffice.
We also need to be
committed to his kingdom.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 to
"seek ye first the kingdom of
God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall
be added unto you." This
means that we are not to
make the gathering of wealth
and material things priority
number one in our lives.
If we are living committed
lives, then we put Jesus first
and the needs of his people
before our own. Some wealthy
and powerful people will
identify with Jesus as long
as it benefits them. They

will become members of the
biggest church and occupy
places of prominence in
order to draw attention to
themselves. Some will donate
large amounts of money and
hold press conferences to
laud their donations. There
is nothing wrong with those
who are blessed with wealth
to be generous towards
churches but it should not
be done with the desire
to promote themselves or
their own personal agenda.
They ought to give because
they are committed to the
cause of Christ, not merely
to identify with the name of
the Lord. Jesus teaches that if
we commit ourselves to the
kingdom of God, then he will
take care of our other needs.
Are you committed to
obeying the commandments
of God? Is it your desire to
seek first the kingdom of God?'
These are important questions
to ponder as we go forward
in our daily activities. During
Isaiah's time, God judged
his people because of their
haughtiness. In their pride
they thought that God would
wink at their lack of regard
towards him. He requires
more than identification-he
requires commitment from his
people.

Fourth of July a

"quiet" event

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

CRESTVIEW
Depending on your
definition of "quiet," it was
a nice, quiet Fourth of July
in the Hub City.
"Quiet" in this instance
refers to emergency
response calls from
Crestview's police and fire
departments.
S"Quiet" as far as north
Okaloosa County's patriotic
citizens are concerned holds
quite a different definition.
The sounds of the
holiday were evident in
every neighborhood, from
the merriment of backyard
family cookouts to the
heartwarming flapping and
fluttering of Old Glory in
the warm breeze.
Appropriately, the
sounds of celebration
culminated with the
booming of fireworks over
Crestview's Spanish Trail
Park. Locally, Independence
Day was definitely observed
with appropriate hubbub.
More than 60 members
of the extended Rogers
family gathered in Laurel
Hill at the home of Chris
and Karen Wooten for their
traditional family fish-fry.
An event that has been held
for nearly half a century,
members of multiple
generations gathered for
family fun and feasting.
Kids splashed in the
pool or on the "Pirates of
the Sea" inflatable water
slide as their parents,
grandparents and great
grand parents swapped

stories, anecdotes-and a
few recipes.
"It definitely was not
quiet in my neighborhood,"
joked Crestview Mayor
David Cadle. "There were
fireworks up and down the
street."
Local firefighters
breathed a sigh of
relief, thankful that
rain-dampened foliage
prevented brush fires that
could be ignited by stray
fireworks. -
Acting Battalion Chief
Ronnie Irlbeck said, "The
recent .rain we had, that
helped matters a whole
lot."
Chuckling he added,
"I can't say people were
being real safe with 'em
[fireworks]!"
The mayor, who dropped
by Spanish Trail Park
Wednesday evening, was
impressed by the turnout
for the city-sponsored
fireworks display. "There
were a lot of cars and people
out there," he said.
Despite being promptly
covered when afternoon
rains rolled through, some
of the fireworks were
dampened. Then, shortly
before the display was to
begin, power was lost to
that section of the park.
Vehicles were brought in to
shine their headlights on the
arrangement of fireworks
so the pyrotechnicians
could ignite them in proper
sequence.
Despite the delay, people
were in a celebratory mood
and cheered each starburst
as it lit up the evening sky.

Daphne is about seven months old and does well
with other pets and children, She would be a perfect
family pet. She is so sweet, very well mannered, and
walks well on a leash. Daphne is crate trained and
could very possibly be housetrained. She is current
on her routine shots and has been spayed. For
more information call Panhandle Animal Lovers at
