Credit card fraud I always worry that if my credit card leaves my sight, someone will copy down t he numbers. There is so much fraud these days. At a restaurant, I either pay cash or else w alk up to the register to pay my bill there. Regarding the credit card fraud story, instead of signing my credit cards, I write “SEE ID” on the back so they have to ask for a photo ID to take my card. In regard to the credit card fraud story, t his happened to my daughter last weekend. Someone cloned her card! Beware. This happened to my parents at a restaurant.Restaurants After working in the food industry for awhile, I just don’t understand how some of these places can allow such dirty conditions to exist. Maybe instead of the help just standing around they could clean. As the saying goes “if you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean.” I tried using the www.my oridalicense.com web site and checking out local restaurants. I was glad to see that the places I normally frequent have good reports from the inspectors. When a place is cited for something like not maintaining the required temperature for food safety, that could endanger the health of anyone who eats that food. Guess it’s “let the diner beware.” OUA reduces debt loadThe Economic Council of Okeechobee applauds the actions of the Okeechobee Utility Authority (OUA) to revisit their major capital projects, pay off a portion of their current debt load and collaborate with Okeechobee County and the City of Okeechobee on the sustainable future of the water and wastewater system. In a Letter to the Editor dated November 2012, the Economic Council of Okeechobee expressed concern for the East Side Force Main and Treasure Island Vacuum Sewer System projects proposed by the OUA. We felt these projects, which totaled nearly $19 million, were not economically justi able and would have added to the signi cant debt load already carried by the OUA, further obligating ratepayers until the year 2053. Okeechobee’s economic climate changed drastically and our community did not realize the growth we thought we would experience during the boom times. The sensible decision by the OUA Board of Directors to abandon these projects is commendable and was made in the best interest of OUA ratepayers and the Okeechobee community. Removing $19 million from the OUA books allowed OUA to revisit their substantial cash reserves in consideration of paying off some of their existing debt load of $41 million in principal only, or $51 million in both principal and interest. OUA’s total cash was estimated by their Rate Consultants to be nearly $17 million with over $11 million of that amount available for paying down debt. During their Dec. 10 Board of Directors meeting, action was taken to utilize roughl y half of their available reserve, or $6.1 million, to pay off a portion of this debt. This action generates a savings of over $500,000 in annual debt service payments and mitigates the rate increase that is needed from 9.5%, if no debt was retired, to an estimated 4% rate increase. The Economic Council o f Okeechobee applauds this wise nancial decision made by the OUA Board. We continue to encourage the OUA, th e county, and the city to join together in ensuring the sustainable future of Okeechobee’s water and wastewater system as was intended during the formation of OUA in 1994 by Interlocal Agreement. Revisiting and updating local policies will help guarante e the system is viable for many years to com e and will also make certain our communit y is well-positioned and attractive for muchneeded growth by keeping our utility rates as low as possible. The Economic Council of Okeechobe e commends these prudent scal actions b y the OUA board of directors. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 5 Okeechobee News December 20, 2013 Peggy King, 50, of Miami. After obtaining a search warrant, he and fellow Okeechobee City Police Department (OCPD) Detective Bill Saum found a slew of items in the car. Now, the investigators are trying to nd out from where the items were taken if, they are actually stolen. King, Diamonte Butler, 21, and Phillis Hill, 48, were arrested and each was charged with one count of felony grand theft. They were booked into the Okeechobee County Jail, but all three have been released after posting a bond of $5,000 each. The trio allegedly took a variety of items from the local Walmart that included two computers, bed sheets and other items for the home. The stolen items totaled $967.24, stated an OCPD arrest report. Along with Polaroid tablets, the investigators also found colognes, perfumes and a variety of toys in the Nissan's trunk. Although they found a few receipts in the trunk, in no way did those receipts provide a proof of purchase for everything. Now, all the detectives have left to do is gure out from where everything came. "We're getting with other agencies because we've found receipts from other counties. We're not sure yet from what jurisdictions things were stolen," said Detective Saum. "Other entities are going to get involved." So far the Lake Placid Police Department, Osceola County Sheriff's Of ce and the Clewiston Police Department have been contacted, he said. But as of Thursday, he and Detective Pickering weren't totally sure just what law enforcement agencies will be involved. Detective Saum said while most of the items found in the trunk were in Walgreen's bags, he and Detective Pickering still don't know where those Walgreen's stores are located. "They've got to either come here with a wand, or we'll take photos of the bar codes and ship those to the different stores," Detective Saum said, adding that he and Detective Pickering are in the process of doing that now. "Each of the stores will then have to scan the items and see what's theirs." He went on to explain that they are nding one small item in a bag that's accompanied with a receipt to show that item was purchased. However, added the investigator, there are many other items in that same bag for which there is no receipt. "We'll have to depend on the state attorney to tell us what we have, because we don't have any proof of who stole what," offered the detective. "Even with video, you see them pick up an item but if you can't identify the item from the video it might not be good enough for a jury." When OCPD Of cer Michael Jordan arrested the trio, he found $467 in cash on Hill and $2,060.10 in cash on King. "The money was seized due to the fact that the female subjects did not have jobs and no form of income," stated Of cer Jordan in his arrest report. "The money is suspected of being a result of their criminal activity." As of yet, neither the items that were obviously purchased nor the cash has been returned to the trio. "Anything on the receipts that's paid for is theirs and we will attempt to return it to them," said Detective Saum. As for the cash, he said he will gladly return it "... if they can show proof there's a reason why they have that much money." He went on to say this case is still in its infancy and that "we still have a whole lot o f proving to do." THEFTSContinued From Page 1 "The patrol does not tolerate impaired drivers on our roads and we will be happy to introduce you to new bartenders' if you drive while impaired." Over 800 people lost their lives in Florida last year due to alcohol-related traf c crashes. Even having just one drink and driving is not worth causing a traf c crash, serious injury or death. The FHP offers these tips for the holiday season. Plan ahead. If you will be drinking, don't plan on driving. Designate a sober driver or nd another safe way home. Even one drink increases the risk of a crash while driving a motor vehicle. If you are impaired, nd another way home use a taxi; call a sober friend or family member; or, use public transportation. Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, don't let them get behind the wheel. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone's life, and inaction could cost a life. DUIContinued From Page 1 By Eric KoppOkeechobee News An Okeechobee man is being held in the Okeechobee County Jail on $1.5 million bond after he allegedly sold over 6 ounces of cocaine to an undercover law enforcement of cer. Detectives from the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force arrested Jonathan Solis-Jimenez, 32, Tuesday, Dec. 17. He was charged with the felonies of traf cking in cocaine (three counts), sale of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to sell/deliver. Solis reportedly sold the powder cocaine during an undercover drug operation held locally. According to the report the undercover of cer made several buys from Solis, including one in which 114 grams of suspected cocaine was purchased. The detective's report stated that after each bu y the powder was eld tested, and each one of those tests indicated a positive result for the presence o f cocaine. In all, approximatel y 6.7 ounces of suspected cocaine was purchased from Solis. The detective's report does not indicate how much the undercover of cer paid for the powder. Local facility is one of 112 across North America contributing to the company’s efforts by protecting native plants and animalsOn Dec. 10, Waste Management’s Okeechobee Land ll was honored at the W ildlife Habitat Council’s 25th Annual Symposium for its achievements in protecting and enhancing wildlife habitat. The facility earned recerti cation of its Wildlife at Work program, which was designed by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) to provide a structure for cooperative efforts between management, employees and community members to create, conserve and restore wildlife habitats. The local effort is part of a national Waste Management program that protects animal and plant species on more than 27,000 acres across North America, representing an important contribution to the company’s goal of 100 certi cations by 2020. “The 43 Waste Management wildlife programs being recognized this year set the pace for the corporate conservation community,” said Margaret O’Gorman, president of the W ildlife Habitat Council. “Waste Management’s leadership in this eld is underscored by the fact that they have more than 100 certied programs, meeting a goal established at the highest levels within the company and achieved by a broad coalition of employees and community volunteers.” Of the Okeechobee Land ll’s 4,100-acre property, 2,000 acres are actively managed for wildlife, and an additional 250 are unmanaged but available. A conservation easement was placed on 1,880 acres of active grass/ woodland pasture, pine atwoods, xeric oak scrub, freshwater marshes and forested wetlands. Early this year the site’s wildlife team worked with 90 South Elementary School students, a Tree World farmer and a horticulturists to create a .20-acre wildlife corridor in a mitigation area. This corridor promotes wildlife movement among three nearby habitats surrounded by pastureland. In the fall of 2012, wetland and upland tree piles were created on the site. These cypress and pine tree piles today form habitat for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and also provide a shoreline buffer. “The active engagement of our volunteer groups helped earn this prestigious award,” said Teresa Chandler, Waste Manager community relations manager. “Okeechobee Land ll engages schools, 4-H Programs and many volunteer groups to assist in enhancing the habitat.” One local group, Arnold’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, works closely with Okeechobee Land ll as a site to release its rehabilitated animals including otters and a variety of birds. “We congratulate Okeechobee Land ll on its re-certi cation as a Wildlife Habitat Council, ‘Wildlife at Work’ site,” said Sue Arnold, President of Arnold’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. “We appreciate our partnership with Waste Management as we use the extensive wildlife preserve lands to release rehabilitated animals back into their natural habitat.” Future plans for the site include ongoing monitoring and invasive control of tropical soda apple, Caesar’s weed and climbing fern, and the wildlife team also plans to extend the wildlife corridor tree line, plant shrubs for understory cover and develop a pollinator meadow. Bat boxes and wildlife monitoring are also in process, with the boxes waiting for installation within the 700 acres of open pastureland. “Waste Management began working with WHC because our employees understand that biodiversity and preservation of wildlife are important to the environment and sustainability,” said Waste Management President and CEO David Steiner. “Beyond helping to provide quality habitat for plants and animals, we believe these efforts are helping to create a more sustainable future for everyone.” Waste Management has been working with WHC since 2000. In 2008, the company was the rst recipient of the organization’s William W. Howard CEO Award, recognizing the company’s efforts in conservation, education and outreach efforts. This year, WM won WHC’s Conservation Education Award, which recognizes corporate members with a history of striving for excellence in conservation education and outreach. Unlike other recognition levels, this award honors an entire organization for providing educational experiences, access to quality education opportunities, and the opportunity to experience personal contact with the natural world to its employees and the surrounding community. To read more about Okeechobee Land ll’s program, please visit http://www.wm.com / wm/community/whc/index.asp.About WHC Certi cationsAs of 2013, there are 668 certi ed Wildlife at Work and 161 certi ed Corporate Lands for Learning programs in 46 states and 12 countries. The certi cation program recognizes outstanding wildlife habitat management and environmental education efforts at corporate sites, and offers third-party validation of the bene ts of such programs. MurphyOkeechobee News Okeechobee High School’s Lady Brahmans soccer team battled the Jensen Beach Lady Falcons to a scoreless tie at a rather frigid Brahman Stadium Monday night. The conditions were dif cult for both teams as temperatures dipped into the 50s for most of the game Dec. 16. Okeechobee got some excellent stops from goal keeper Stormy Stokes and were able to play solid defense for much of the night. Jensen Beach had defeated Okeechobee 7-0 to win by mercy rule in the rst half of the game the two teams played in early Nov ember. Coach Sonya Smith called it an amazing game for her team. “I’m so proud of the girls. The fact that we shut out Jensen Beach and held it off for a tie w as amazing. We were mostly defense, but the girls did a phenomenal job,” she said Smith said in the past Jensen Beach has dominated matches against Okeechobee. Often times they have won by mercy rule, sometimes before the second half began. “For us not to allow a goal for an entire game is really an accomplishment. I think tonight the girls showed just how much they have improved,” she added. Communication on the eld is the key to the team’s improvement, Smith said. She noted the girls work together more, and seem to know where there teammates are located. “When the girls communicate they do well. If this team tonight showed up for every match, I know we would have a much better record. I’m con dent we will put out more wins before the season is over,” she added. Defensive fullback Hannah Raulerson said she felt this tie was akin to making school history. “We haven’t tied or defeated Jensen Beach, so I feel we defeated them tonight. We got inside their heads,” she said. Raulerson said in her opinion the team has gotten closer together and have played more like a team in recent weeks. She said the girls had each other’s back and encouraged each other if one of them made a mistake. The Lady Brahmans will host Lake Placid on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Brahman Stadium. OHS-Jensen soccer tilt ends deadlocked at 0-0 Okeechobee News/ Charles MurphyBrianna Nunez (4 in white) and Cameron White (12 in white) were among the Lady Brahman defenders that battled to a 0-0 tie with the always-tough Jensen Beach Lady Falcons Monday night.

Mario Alberto Martinez, 26, N.W. First St., Okeechobee, was arrested Saturday, Dec. 14, on felony charges of battery on a law enforcement of cer and resisting a law enforcement of cer with violence. He was also charged with the misdemeanors of battery (two counts) and assault. Martinez was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail on a bond of $22,500. Jail records indicate he has been released on bond. An arrest report by Deputy Megan Holroyd, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Of ce (OCSO), stated she responded to the call where Martinez had apparently become angry and pushed his mother into his pregnant girlfriend. Through the course of her investigation, Deputy Holroyd learned that Martinez had supposedly been drinking. As the deputy was trying to ascertain what had evolved in the home, Martinez apparently told his sister he was going to kill her. Deputy Holroyd then asked the man to go outside, but he refused to leave. Deputy Ben Lisle, who had responded as back-up for Deputy Holroyd, told the man to go outside but Martinez refused and reportedly told Deputy Lisle “I don’t like the way you’re looking at me,” and put his nger in the deputy’s face. Deputy Lisle then grabbed the man’s hand to place handcuffs on him. The 5-foot-10, 280-pound, Martinez then allegedly tackled Deputy Lisle. When the two men went to the oor, Martinez was on top of the deputy and ghting him, stated the arrest report. Deputy Holroyd rst radioed for help, then deployed her taser. But, she stated in her report, the taser had no effect on Martinez. Between the two deputies, they deployed their tasers four different times. Deputy Sergeant Shannon Peterson arrived at the home and assisted the other two deputies in restraining Martinez. The deputy’s arrest report does not indicate if anyone was injured. Cyberknife Robotic Radio surgery system, created at Stanford University over 10 years ago is unique and better than other systems in the fact that it is the only Radio surgery system that can achieve what is called real-time tracking and killing of tumor.Ž What kind of patients can be helped by Cyberknife? There are several situations too numerous to mention here where Cyberknife would be extremely useful and safe. The following are just a few of them: Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia, pituitary tumors and tumors of the acoustic nerve called Acoustic Neuroma can avoid major surgical procedures on the brain by getting treated with Cyberknife. Patients with cancers of the brain, spine, lung and prostate are but a few of the cancers that can be helped with one to “ve sessions of Radio Surgery. An article that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010 showed that patients with patients with lung cancer who received Radiosurgery had a survival rate of 55.8% at 3 years versus 20 to 35% for those patients treated with traditional radiation over several weeks. As one of our patients commented, if it is good for patients at Stanford University, it is good for patients from the Okeechobee area! If you or someone you know has any form of cancer, please call us so we can explore the possibility of treating it with this cutting edge technology. This 4.5 million dollar machine is available at the of“ces of Dr. Kumar in Saint Lucie County. Courtesy transportation is available to get to this of“ce for those patients in need. MurphyOkeechobee News Okeechobee sophomore Brian Chapman had two major accomplishments to brag about in the last month as he was named All-Area by Treasure Coast coaches and also rolled a perfect game at Stuart Bowl. Chapman was named Most Valuable Bowler for the Okeechobee high school bowling team in November. He had the highest average of any high school bowler in the area, 224 this y ear. “It feels great. I worked hard throughout the year and the off season to improve my game and it feels good to nally get recognition for what I’ve done,” he said. Chapman has only been bowling for just over two years. He said he is surprised how good he has become at the sport in a short period of time. “It was a real shocker to make the all-area team. I didn’t think I had come this far in this short of time. I’m now one of the best bowlers around,” he noted. Chapman usually competes with older and more experience bowlers said maintains that makes it a challenge, but one he always enjoys. As part of his off season work he travels 45 miles each Saturday to compete in the Stuart Bowl Junior League. It is regarded as one of the best junior programs in the country. Chapman said the perfect game really was a dream come true. “They are very rare. I’ve only seen two perfect games rolled in my life,” he recalled. “I had rolled a 220 and 240 in my rst two games that day, and I started my third game with a strike. I had found my line and I stuck with it.” Chapman, an honor roll student, who would like to one day become a doctor, would like to earn a college scholarship through his bowling and his academic achievements. He said he did not get overwhelmed when he rolled strike after strike during his perfect game. “I kept getting strikes and on the ninth frame I noticed I had a perfect game and I started to get nervous. I kept a cool head, stayed focused and made the next three strikes,” he added. Chapman said a lot of the crowd started to take notice and that a huge uproar lled the building when he made his nal strike. “I just took it shot for shot really, and didn’t worry about the end result -just the next shot,” he added. Chapman rolled a 770 series that day. He would like to reach an 800 series for his next accomplishment in bowling. Chapman intends to keep busy in the of f season with tournaments throughout the state. His father is disabled and donations are needed to assist Chapman in his quest for bowling excellence. He has also tried to get businesses to sponsor his efforts. For information on ho w you can help, call 863-484-2319. OHS kegler rolls perfect game; wins MVP award Brian Chapman

With Christmas a little more than a week away, Mrs. Sickels felt it was extremely important to teach the students about putting their own “wants” aside and doing for those less fortunate than themselves. To prepare for their trip to Walmart, each student was taught to round money, budget for gifts, and count their change. All week, students used their “Santa Bucks” to practice buying toys in “Sickels” Toy Store” in their classroom. Through the generosity of the Kiwanis Club of Okeechobee, Okeechobee Special Equestrian, Mimi Arnold, the Children’s Services Council, and several anonymous donors, the class was able to experience the joy of giving. Now, dozens of children being serviced by Legacy Behavioral Health Center will have a wonderful Christmas. Special to the Okeechobee NewsOn the Hoof donatesOn Thursday, Dec. 12, the 4-H group “On the Hoof” presented gently used clothing to the Pregnancy Center. It began in October with the collection of jars. Painted, decorated, and lled with candy, over 160 home bound seniors were given a "trick or treat." Thanksgiving Day rolled around and the seniors were out in action once again. Armed w ith meals provided by Big Lake Missions, over 100 Thanksgiving meals were delivered to seniors who were spending the holiday alone and unable to cook. The idea of providing food and gifts for Christmas this year began with the boys of G4S. The boys in this facility are awarded points for good behavior. They generally use those points to purchase snacks and sodas for themselves as a well-deserved rew ard. This year, instead of using the points for themselves, they asked if they could use the points to purchase food for those older adults in Okeechobee who couldn't afford Christmas. The staff, holding back tears of pride and joy, converted the points to cash and purchased nonperishable food. Challenged by the boys, the staff of G4S began their own food drive. The delivery to the Senior Center provided over 500 pounds of food for distribution. The seniors of the center then began a Secret Santa tree. The staff at the center completed their research (seniors living on $700 or less a month) and just over 30 seniors were added to the Secret Santa tree for adoption of a gift for Christmas. Calls went out to ask what they would like to have Santa bring them this year. One lady asked for a pizza to be delivered. "I haven't had a pizza in over three years. I see other homes getting pizza delivered all the time. I would love to get a pizza." Request for shampoo, lotion, socks, Tshirts, sweaters, blankets and toilet paper were received. On Tuesday, the seniors at the center packed up Santa (Willie Reeves), his helper (Fred Klesper), and the elves (Kathy Melton and Dawn White) who made deliveries to the homes. Kathy Melton stated: "Words couldn't explain the joy that was on their faces! Just to see the food coming in the door brought tears to their eyes. When the gift bags were presented they were so excited" More than once Santa's team heard, "I'm so excited. This is really for me!" One gentleman in a wheel chair said he had been in Okeechobee for 17 years and no one has ever helped him like this. A couple, both in wheel chairs, stated, "Thank you, thank you, we are so thankful." They had only asked for a mug to drink coffee in. Their gift, however, gave each a mug, along with blankets, slippers, socks and lotion. One veteran, ying the American ag in his yard, stood tall and grateful that someone was thinking of him. A lady living in a camping trailer stated, "You don't know what this means to me, having this food and this gift." Tears of happiness and joy owed from each recipient and givers alike as Santa's team delivered to over 50 homes. In addition to the seniors of the center, this wonderful undertaking could not have taken place without the help of additional partners of the Senior Center. Big Lake Missions, Hungry Howie's, Publix, Fredo's Vegetable Stand (from the "caboose" ea market), the Yachette Club, Papa John's, Florida Power and Light, Golgotha Ministries, My Aunt's House, Dominos, Members of the Community Collaborative Council, Okeechobee County employees and individuals of the community. Senior center and G4S boys brighten holidays Special to the Okeechobee NewsThe team from Okeechobee County Senior Services brought holiday cheer to local low-income senior citizens. From left to right are; Janie Kiln, Ruebin Guerrero, Lidia Guerrero, Ida Curtis, Lester Curtis, Mary Ellen Hill, Pat Diles, Kathy Melton, Willie Reeves, Dawn White, Phyllis, Lucy Johnson, Wanda Klesper, Stephanie Trimnal, Don Smith, Annie Gough and Fred Klesper.

Children are out of school on winter break soon, and while the holiday season is upon us, so are several traditional hunting opportunities. The second phase of waterfowl and coot season comes in statewide Dec. 7 and runs through Jan. 26. In addition to the usual hunting license and permit requirements, duck hunters also must have a Florida waterfowl permit ($5) and a federal duck stamp ($15). The daily bag limit on ducks is six, but you need to know your ducks before you pull the trigger, because there are different daily limits for each species. For instance, within the six-bird limit there may be only one black duck, one mottled duck and one fulvous whistling-duck. Only two of your six-bird limit may be canvasbacks, pintails, redheads or scaup, and three may be wood ducks. And you may have no more than four scoters or four mallards (of which only two may be female) in your bag. All other species of ducks can be taken up to the six-bird limit, except harlequin ducks. The daily limit on coots is 15, and there’s a ve-bird limit on mergansers, only two of which may be hooded. When hunting waterfowl, hunters may use only nontoxic shotgun shells. Only iron (steel), bismuth-tin and various tungstenalloys are permissible. For something different, try woodcock hunting. Woodcock season again runs Dec. 18 – Jan. 31. Woodcocks are excellent game birds because they hold well for pointing bird dogs and provide a challenging shot when ushed. The daily bag limit is three. The third phase of mourning and whitewinged dove season opened Dec. 14 and runs through Jan. 12. The daily bag limit is 15 birds. The shooting hours for all migratory birds are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. However, you must get a no-cost migratory bird permit where you purchase your hunting license before you hunt any of these birds. The only rearm you can use to hunt migratory game birds is a shotgun, no larger than 10-gauge. Shotguns must be plugged to a three-shell capacity (magazine and chamber combined). Bows also are legal. Retrievers and bird dogs can be useful in hunting migratory game birds. Arti cial decoys and manual or mouth-operated bird calls also are legal and essential gear for duck hunters. You may hunt migratory game birds over an agricultural eld if the crop was planted by regular agricultural methods. However, don’t even think about “sweetening” the eld by scattering agricultural products over it — or anywhere near it — or you could wind up in serious trouble. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t the one who scattered the bait. If you knew or should have known that such bait was present, you’re accountable under federal law. Some other things you can’t do while hunting migratory game birds include using ri es, pistols, crossbows, traps, snares, nets, sinkboxes, swivel guns, punt guns, batter y guns, machine guns, sh hooks, poisons, drugs, explosive substances, live decoys and recorded bird calls, sounds or electrically ampli ed bird-call imitations. It is also against the law to shoot from a moving automobile or boat and herd or drive birds with vehicles or vessels. Bobcat and otter hunting season always runs Dec. 1 – March 1, and there’s no dail y bag or season limit on either species. Like foxes, bobcats may be chased yearround with dogs, but possessing rearms during the closed season, between March 2 and Nov. 30, is prohibited. On a few wildlife management areas, bobcats and otters ma y not be taken, so please consult the speci c area brochure before you hunt. December has the hunting opportunities you’re looking for, whether you are uplandbird hunting with friends and family, shooting ducks on the pond with your favorite lab or taking that big cat as he slips up behind an unsuspecting fawn. Here’s wishing you happy holidays and a successful hunting season. If you can, remember to introduce someone new to our great sport. As always, have fun, hunt safely and ethically, and we’ll see you in the woods! Tony Young is the media relations coordinator for the FWC’s Division of Hunting and Game Management. MurphyOkeechobee News Clewiston High School shut down the high-powered Brahman attack and scored a rst-half goal thanks to a long clearing kick and header by Juan Sandoval as they defeated rival Okeechobee High School 2-0 in boys soccer action Tuesday at Brahman Stadium. Clewiston (6-4-2) added a second goal in the 39th minute of the second half by Jesus Benitez to nish off the upset of Okeechobee, who fell to 8-2 on the season. The Brahmans had some scoring chances, most of them in the second half, but were stopped by the Tigers' tight defense and the play of goal keeper Jose Vanegas who had 12 saves. Clewiston played a physical style which appeared to throw off Okeechobee. OHS w as fortunate early as a mistake in goal gave the Tigers a point-blank shot in the rst 10 minutes. The shot missed the goal entirely. Okeechobee had a chance with an empty net and the keeper out of position one minute later, but a centering pass went through the crease of the net untouched. The best Brahman chance to score came on a 15-yard blast by Wilson Barahona that Vanegas stopped. Brian Guerrero nearly had a breakaway opportunity later in the half on a nice feed by Barahona, but Vanegas beat him to the ball in front of the net. Brahman coach Lonnie Sears said he was disappointed that his players didn't listen to his directions in this match. "I give Logan Laskey and some others credit for their play, he won some balls in the middle of the eld. Otherwise, I'm not really satis ed. I'm very disappointed in this team right now," he said. Sears said the match was very even, especially in the rst half. He said his team made a mistake by allowing Sandoval to run unmolested all the way to the goal where he got his shot opportunity. "We didn't play defense and do basic stuff that we teach them. They don't listen. We are a lot more disciplined on the defensive end than that but we didn't show it tonight. It wasn't a good game all around," he added. Sears said the Tigers have a good team with good coaching and deserve a lot of credit for how hard they played in this game. "They have a good coach and some good kids but we made them look even better than they are," he reasoned. The Brahman offense got more opportunities and corner kicks in the second half but was unable to get the ball in the net. Several times they had balls in front of the Tiger net but could not nd pay dirt. One shot in the nal minutes went just wide of the Tiger goal. Sears said the team did a good job passing and being patient, but didn't try to look up the eld enough so that they could get scoring opportunities. "They take patience as just pushing the ball around on the defensive end and my defenders know the rst thing you do is see if a guy is open up front. You can't score unless you get the ball up front," he added. The Brahmans are off until Jan. 4 when they host Fort Pierce Central in a rare matinee at Brahman Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. Tigers hand Brahmans second soccer loss By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News Alan Morgan had 22 points which included some key free throws down the stretch as Port St. Lucie held off Okeechobee High School 61-56 in boys roundball action Tuesday night at OHS. Morgan distributed the ball well, and made some good ball-handling decisions, especially down the stretch, as the Jaguars w on a must-win game. "We came in here at 0-2 in the district and w e knew this game was important. It was a hard fought game and it was kind of edgy but in the end we pulled it out," he said. Okeechobee got a boost from the return of senior guard Sylvester Butler, who had a solid game for the team. Roshell Thomas and Jacob Stewart continued to give solid efforts for OHS (4-7). "Okeechobee is a pretty solid team, they are scrappy and they gave us a good game. I know they will come ready to play next time," Morgan added. Okeechobee didn't go down quietly in the fourth quarter as Butler hit a shot, Roshell Thomas made some free throws, and Stewart hit a free throw to cut the Jaguar lead to three points in the nal minute. A follow by Thomas cut the lead to 59-56, but Morgan was fouled and hit the nal two free throws to ice the game. "I try to concentrate and block everything out on the free-throw line. I know that free throws at the end of games are big," Morgan said. Port St. Lucie also wasn't deterred when their leading scorer, 6'-5" center Domencio Santiago had foul trouble and fouled out w ith 2 minutes left in the game. Eddie Neal had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Roshell Thomas had 10 points and four assists, Jacob Stewart had 15 points and Tyrell Taylor had eight points and eight rebounds for the Brahmans. Branham coach Shawn Hays said he thought his team played pretty well but made a few more mistakes than Port St. Lucie. He said other than a few bad possessions for his team in the second half; it was an even ball game. "Port St. Lucie played well and you have to give them credit. They are disciplined and their point guard is a tough kid that moves the ball well and makes their offense go," he noted. Hays said both teams came in hungry and desperate for a win and both teams had their chances to win. Neither team could build much of an advantage in the tight back and forth game. Hays said he liked having Butler back on the court. Butler was able to penetrate to the basket a few times and adds a threat from the three-point line as well. "He de nitely adds a dimension that we have missed. It is great to have him back. I know it killed him to sit out because he's a competitor. We look forward to having him moving forward," he said. Hays said he really looks forward to some practice time in the next few weeks so his team can work on some of their problems and shortcomings. He holds out hope the team can win a game or two at the Berean Christian Holiday Tournament slated for Friday and Saturday in West Palm Beach. "We match up pretty well down there. We have a chance. If we play basketball we'll be tough to beat for the rest of the season," he added.
