They reported that the cool weather was ideal, with the exception of one 36-degree morning. The annual 109-mile hike circles the big lake. Much of the hike is the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike. Founded in 1991 by the Loxahatchee Chapter of the Florida Trail Association, the Big O Hike involves nine days of walking around the second largest lake entirely within the United States. Participants may join the group for any day or portion of a day during the nine-day event. There are no rules as to how much of the hike a participant must complete in a single year. To obtain an of cial completion certi cate, you can hike all nine days in one year, or ve days in one year and four the next, or one day a year for nine years. It's up to you and your schedule. Fatalities Editor’s note: We have received many c omments in regard to the accident which c laimed two lives on Dec. 1. The accident is c urrently under investigation by the Florida H ighway Patrol. Out of respect for the famil ies of those who died and of those who w ere seriously injured we will hold any lett ers to the editor about this accident until a fter that FHP investigation is concluded. M any allegations have been made and t here are many rumors circulating about f actors that may or may not have contribu ted to the crash. We feel it would be irres ponsible to allow “trial by newspaper” in o ur letters section before the FHP concludes t he investigation on this particular case. Aft er the FHP completes their investigation, t he newspaper will welcome letters as long a s they stay within our guidelines for fair c omment.U.S. students fall behind All over the news this week is the news t hat American children are falling behind t he rest of the world in education. While the United States spends more per child on educ ation than most countries of the world, our global rankings are dismal when it comes to results The U.S. spends a larger percentage of its gross domestic product on education t han most developed countries with 7.3 perc ent. The average for developed nations is 6.3 percent. The problem, it appears, is with how the education money is spent. In the U.S., beginning teachers are paid as well or b etter than beginning teachers in other parts of the world. But the salaries fall behind for experienced teachers. The U.S. government is “throwing money” at the problem, but maybe we need to look harder at just how t hat money is spent. The United States education system has been falling behind for decades. In my opinion, the problem is not with the schools or the teachers but originates in the homes. When most kids had a parent at home to supervise them and help keep them on track, it was a much better system. What used to be the norm is now the exception. People say they can’t afford to have a parent stay home, but studies have shown that if you do without a few of the extras, it is possible. In many cases, these families are paying nearly as much for daycare as one of the parents brings in. So when you no longer pay for daycare, you save a lot of money. Another alternative some families have used is “tag teaming” with parents working different shifts so someone is always there for the kids. Inviting grandparents to move in and help with the kids also works in some cases. Too many parents expect the government to raise the kids for them, and it is not working.Teachers You can thank your criminal governor for eliminating the tenure system. And why are teachers dipping into their own pockets to pay for school supplies that they obviously need? I pay two school taxes so why shouldn’t that cover the cost? Why are parents constantly having to pay ridiculous amounts of money for school functions, such as having to pay for your cap and paying an outrageous amount for senior photos. How do kids whose parents aren’t nancially able to pay for a cap and gown walk down the barn’s sty path with their classmates? The tenure system was never intended for secondary education (K-12), and is really a misnomer. Tenure is really designed as a “protective” device for university level teachers. In the K-12 case, “tenure” is really con ned to the classic de nition: “... teachers contractual right not to have his or her position terminated without just cause.” Regardless of the Guv’s actions, etc., the fact of the matter is that over the years, a signi cant number of “tenured” K-12 teachers lapsed from academic excellence to simply viewing their positions as nothing more than a subsidized sinecure. K-12 teachers have fundamental levels of “hard skill” competencies that they must impart to the students before they enter the university level academic regimes which require the fundamental competency bases in order for the students to truly begin “independent thought.” Love the new columnI want to let you know how much I have been enjoying the new column in the Okeechobee News “Tammi’s Top of the Lake.” I clipped the most recent one (11-24-13) in order to send it up North to some snowbirds that will be coming for two months after the rst of the year. They inquired if we had anything new in Okeechobee? New or old, it makes little difference, we enjoy taking advantage of what we do have. It’s nice to be reminded of our local merchants’ hospitality and good will. Thanks, Tammi, for a cleverly done new addition to the Okeechobee News Rita CootsEye Care for NeedyThis is the time of year that makes all of us realize our blessings and we at Brennan Eye Care would like to give back to those less fortunate. Thank you from Brennan Eye Care, Dr. J. Patrick Brennan and Dr. Christine B. BishopLikes the changesI wanted to say thank you for some o f the new changes that are being made in the Okeechobee News I love Tammi’s new section that I believe is called “Top o f the Lake” where she highlights businesses and such. It’s nice to see what is offered he r that we long time residents might not even be aware of. My suggestion would be to le t her go where she chooses along with suggestions made by readers along with he r other assignments. I also think the “Going Out” section is a great new addition to th e paper. It’s nice to look in our own paper and see events that will be going on or services offered along with those in some or our surrounding counties. Great job Okeechobee News keep up the good work. By Eric KoppOkeechobee News A Bassmaster employee was rushed to Raulerson Hospital with unspeci ed injuries after a metal trailer door fell on him and pinned him to the pavement at C. Scott Driver Marina. The incident reportedly happened W ednesday, Dec. 4, around 10:08 a.m. as Bassmaster employees Tony Lynn Quick and Bruce James Mathis were preparing for the upcoming Wild Card bass tournament. The three-day event will be shed out of the C. Scott Driver Marina. The tourney will conclude Saturday, Dec. 7, with a 3 p.m. weigh-in at the marina. According to a report by Deputy Tammy Sera ni, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Of ce (OCSO), Mr. Mathis, 66, opened the side door of the 15-ft. x 10-ft. trailer and it fell on him. Apparently he was not aware a cable had broken that is attached to a winch system that helps lower and lift the metal door. When the door fell on Mr. Mathis, it caused his body to be positioned with his toes up, heels down on the pavement and his upper body was bent forward with his head between his legs. The force of the door landing on his torso caused his face to hit the pavement. Mr. Quick reportedly told the deputy he heard Mr. Mathis yell and he rushed to his aid. Mr. Quick was able to lift the door and pull the victim from under it. "Tony said when he lifted the door, Bruce's torso opped backwards," stated the deputy. Deputy Sera ni stated the victim's face was bleeding and he was taken to the local hospital by Okeechobee Fire/Rescue emergency medical personnel. No further information was available on the man's injuries or his current condition. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 5 Okeechobee News December 6, 2013 site plan presented in 2007 was approved in 2009 but there was a two-year time limit to start construction and that has expired. Project engineer Steve Dobbs said this w ill allow the project go forward should the nancing be obtained. The applicant must resubmit other permit applications with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the South Florida Water Management District but doesn't expect any problems with that. Mr. Dobbs said the original plan would replace four single-family homes w ith town houses that were one story. The city has already approved a developer's agreement for the project. Mr. Dobbs would not predict whether the project will become a reality. He said the economy appears to be turning around at least in the housing construction industry in recent months. The council approved an agreement with TSI Disaster Recovery, LLC of St. Cloud for a proposed stormwater retro t and conveyance project. The agreement states work should be completed within nine months. The contractor will provide and pay for all permits, drawings, labor, tools, materials, equipment, supervision and other services that are required. The cost of the project w ill not exceed $250,000 which is equal to a grant the city received for this project. Administrator Brian Whitehall said the rm has worked for the city before and he is very comfortable with the quality of work. The work will improve several southeast section canals and drainage systems. The City of Okeechobee has already started a process for more grants from the state legislature. He said the climate against polluted water going into Lake Okeechobee should assist the city effort. He explained that there was an original estimate of $600,000 to de-muck and improve the drainage systems in the southeast section of town. The council approved a grant application of $1,886 with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to acquire new computer equipment, digital cameras and a color printer for the evidence room at the police department. Councilmembers also reviewed landscaping proposed for South Parrott Avenue. Main Street received a $100,000 grant to improve the medians closer to State Road 70. The estimated cost of the trees to be planted is $38,400. The city also assumed maintenance of a median in front of Raulerson Hospital to preserve some myrtle trees the state planned to destroy. Council voiced no concerns about the plans. Andrew Hansen, from the Florida League of Cities, presented a certi cate of appreciation to City Councilman Dowling Watford for 30 years of service to local government. CITYContinued From Page 1 is hanging out in businesses frequented by Latinos and offering to do palm readings." The investigator went on to explain that last weekend's victim was approached by the woman Saturday, Nov. 30, in a local business and offered to do a spiritual cleansing, and the soon-to-be victim agreed. But, the woman did not show up. However, the woman showed up unexpectedly at the victim's home Sunday and w as allowed entrance into the home by the v ictim's children. The detective said the children told the woman their mother was in her bedroom. According to the detective the woman entered the victim's bedroom only to see her counting a large amount of cash. The 39y ear-old victim had apparently been saving money to send back to Mexico so a family member could have some sort of surgery, said Detective Van Deman. After seeing all that cash, the con artist asked to borrow $200 but the victim said she could not afford to loan her the money. An argument soon ensued and the woman sprayed some sort of liquid into the victim's face, took over $1,000 in cash and ed the home. "The victim said the spray caused her to be disoriented and nauseous," the detective added. "The victim said the woman spoke Spanish, but had a strange accent." When asked what the spray could have been, the detective said he did not know at this time. "The woman ed in a small brown car possibly a Chevrolet or Volkswagen Jetta," said Detective Van Deman. "The car was being driven by a Latin male." As far as he knows, this woman is the only victim. But, he does know the woman has been seen several times in various businesses that are frequented by Latinos. "She appears to be focusing on the Latinos," he added. If anyone has information about this case or the female con artist's identity, they are asked to call Detective Van Deman at 863763-3117. According to Okeechobee County Sheriff's Of ce (OCSO) dispatcher notes, the bridge remained in the open position from 4:43 until 7 p.m. The two-lane highway was shut down from its intersection with S.E. 18th Terrace to S.E. 34th Avenue. Those notes also indicate that the power line was down and draped over the Zachary Taylor RV Resort sign near the bridge and on the east side of Taylor Creek. Roland Clifton Long, 40, Perimeter Road, and Lisa Osceola, 48, N. Arbalena, w ere both arrested Monday, Dec. 2. They were each charged with one felony count of possession of listed chemicals for the manufacture of a controlled substance. Long and Osceola were both booked into the Okeechobee County Jail. Jail records show Long is being held on $20,000 bond, while Osceola has been released after posting her $30,000 bond. Osceola was apparently driving a 2009 red Ford pickup when she was stopped by a detective with the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force for running a stop sign at S.W. Fourth Avenue and S.W. Second Street. Long was a passenger in the vehicle. According to the detective’s arrest report, Osceola consented to a search of her vehicle. During that search, the detective allegedly found: a box of pseudoephedrine cold medicine; one gallon of Coleman camp fuel; a container of coffee lters; a 42-ounce container of drain cleaner; a funnel; an 18-ounce container of drain cleaner; a 20-ounce container of drain cleaner; and, a partial container of cold medicine. “All of the above items are used in the production of methamphetamine,” stated the detective’s report. The detective went on to explain that these items are used in the ‘one pot’ or ‘shake and bake’ method to make meth. The report does not indicate if Osceola was issued a traf c citation. Report: Couple had items to make meth Roland Long Lisa Osceola Center open for exercising Unless an event is taking place, the Okeechobee County Agri-Civic Center grounds are open to area residents for exercise activities such as walking, running and bike riding on a daily basis. A decisive third quarter proved to be the difference for the Brahmans who played w ithout several players who are practicing this week for the South Central Florida AllStar Football game in Sebring. Fred Bradley had six points and six rebounds and Roshell Thomas had six points and four assists in the game for OHS, (3-4). Brahman coach Shawn Hays said this w as a sleeper game for his team because they played a tough game the night before at South Fork and really didn’t know what to expect from the Terriers. “It’s a game where you have to motivate yourself and if you don’t nd it, Moore Haven is a sleeper team that can bite you,” he noted. Hays said it was good to break the threegame losing streak. He said the kids continue to play hard and have fought through a tough stretch. “It was good to nally get a win and I’m glad we broke the streak. Tyrell gave us a good inside presence, showed he had some post moves and worked well on the offensive glass,” he added. Chase Asmussen and Dustin Herrin came off the bench to provide some solid minutes for the Brahmans in this game. Okeechobee led only by three after the rst quarter, 12-9 and 27-19 at the half. They outscored the Terriers 17-6 in the third quarter to put the game away. Taylor said he needed this game to work on his skills and to improve. He said he has to nd ways to score some points to help his team out. He always tries to focus on his defense and rebounding. “I’m not too concerned with scoring because points will come. I’m more of a rebounder and defensive player that is trying to improve on what I do,” he added. Taylor said it was important for the team’s morale to win this game and get rolling again. “All of the games are tough, I hope this will give us a boost and help us in district,” he said. MurphyOkeechobee NewsOsceola Middle School’s efforts to break a long losing streak fell just short Tuesday when the Warriors fell to Sebastian 42-36 in middle school basketball action in Okeechobee. Ja Juan Cherry had 16 points and over 10 steals and Evan Neal scored 12 points to lead the Warriors, (0-3). The Cowboys w ere led by Corbin Gibson with 21 points and Andre Johnson with 10 points. Sebastian led 11-6 after one and 19-10 at halftime. They built a 10-point lead in the third quarter, 23-13, only to see the W arriors come back strong with a 16-7 run to pull to within one point midway through the fourth quarter. A full-court press by the Warriors forced a number of turnovers and helped Osceola make it a competitive game down the stretch. OMS coach Demario Coleman said he felt great about his team’s effort because it appears the team progresses and improves in each game. He has told them to keep their focus and give maximum effort at all times. “We played are hearts out tonight. We practice hard all day and we will run the full-court press all season,” he added. Jesse Mond came off the bench and did a good job on Gibson in the second half. He said he made a few mistakes but tries to make up for them. He also works hard off the court to improve his game. Mond was also the quarterback for the Federal Express Youth Football team this year. He’s excited about a home game this Saturday at the Okeechobee Sports Complex. Mond said it appeared the pressure defense has been effective for the Warriors. “Especially when we had the intensity. They got the ball to (Gibson) but we found a way to shut that down,” he explained. The fourth quarter was back and forth as Osceola pulled to within 35-34 on a bucket by Neal. Darius Houze also hit two baskets in the fourth quarter to keep Osceola close. Houze, who missed the youth football season due to an injury, said he felt the Warriors have really improved this year. “We lost our rst game by 48 points and now we are barely losing. I think we have really improved by playing these games. I just go out there, play good basketball and give credit to God,” he added. Houze said the team is used to losing, and many of the players have never been a part of a victory. He predicted the team will nd a way to win a few games this year. Coleman said victories will all come down to having con dence. He said the effort is there, but the execution must improve. “I think the wins are really there for us. We had chances tonight,” he said. “We hope to steal our next game and hope to take it all the way.” W arriors’ effort falls short in 42-36 hoop loss Okeechobee News/ Charles MurphyJa Juan Cherry (left) drives to the hoop against Corbin Gibson of Sebastian during Tuesday’s game. MurphyOkeechobee NewsCheyenne Nunez had a game high 28 points, which included the game winning basket, to lead Okeechobee High School to a 39-38 v ictory over Moore Haven on Wednesday night. Nunez battled all night long with friend and fellow Seminole Tribe member Darlah Cypress w ho had 23 points to lead Moore Haven. Nunez stole the inbounds pass with less than 10 seconds left and put up a short jumper that found the mark to help Okeechobee snap a ve-game losing streak. "I'm still in shock," Nunez said. "I saw the ball on the oor, I got it, went around the defender, shot it up and it went in, it was crazy and so intense." Okeechobee was able to come back from an eight-point halftime de cit. Nunez knew almost as many players on the Moore Haven team as she did her own team. The Seminole Tribe has produced some excellent basketball players in recent seasons including Kalgary Johns, Sydney Cypress and Jessie Osceola, who all play for Moore Haven. Lady Brahman coach Morgan Ungerott said this was a huge win for her team. She told her team that they stole this game. "We were lucky to come away with it and we didn't play our best but the ve players out on the court really put their heart and soul towards this win," she said. Ungerott said it is dif cult to motivate the team at times because they lose con dence when they miss a couple of baskets. "I can jump up and down, scream as loud as I can but it comes down to the players," she said. "In the past we were not sure how to win winnable games. As this game went on we started to believe a little bit more." Ungerott said the girls continue to learn and are headed in the right direction. She praised some of her inside players like Baylee Farless and LaPorsche Morris for their contributions in this game. "We found some positives because the girls are de nitely learning and this was a step in the right direction. We hope we can use this game to help us in our district games," she added. Nunez said the team was sluggish in the rst half but decided at halftime they could win this game and went out and took over. "We heated up, made some layups, moved the ball faster and drove to the basket more. Shots started to fall," she said. "We needed this big time. I decided to act like an animal, get the ball and get out of this losing streak." Nunez scores 28 in OHS girls’ roundball win By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee NewsThe Yearling Middle School boys basketbal l team lost to Storm Grove 29-27 on Tuesday. Defense was the huge part of the game as the Sting Rays shut down the Bulls after the rst quarter. Yearling scored 13 points in the rst six minutes and then only 14 points over the next 18 minutes of play. YMS coach Mike Wharin called it another tough loss and that his team just couldn't get good shot opportunities to fall in the basket. "The second half was a mixed bag. We had great results on defense but the offense continued to struggle," he added. Yearling held their breath as star guard Janavise Futch went down with an ankle injury late in the game. Wharin said he thinks the team will rebound and should shoot better in future games. "The men gave 100-percent tonight and effort was not a problem. We just need a little luck to fall our way," he added. Yearling hosted Oslo Middle School on Thursday. The Okeechobee youth football league will host a schedule of games Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Okeechobee Sports Complex. The league competes in the Federal Express Youth Football League against teams from Fort Pierce, Pahokee, Indiantown, Belle Glade and Palm Beach County. Several games are scheduled with the start time at 10 a.m. The Brahman boys basketball team dropped their district opener 74-54 on Tuesday at South Fork. Kaiman Patterson had 16 points and Chris Watson added 12 points for the Bulldogs (3-1). Okeechobee fell to 3-4 on the season. Okeechobee Sports News in Brief By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee NewsBrianna Nunez scored the only goal of the game and the Brahman defense and goal keeper Stormy Stokes did the rest as the Lady Brahmans defeated Fort Pierce Westwood 1-0 in high school soccer action Wednesday night at Brahman Stadium. Okeechobee controlled the play for most of the night as they kept the ball in the Westwood side of the eld and peppered the Lady Panther goal with shots. Most of the shots were off the net which included some point-blank opportunities for Keirsten Bostwick and Rosa Borja. Okeechobee (3-7) did a good job against the Panther attack. Rarely did the Panthers get any scoring chances without a defender right in their face. Mid elder Ivette Vega said she felt the team did really well as a unit, passed well, communicated better and continue to improve this year. "Westwood has very good players and we have good players. I think we can do better. We just keep our hopes up, pursue the ball and do our best," she added. Stokes had 11 saves in the rst half and six saves in the second half. Cameron White had a scoring opportunity from 10 yards away that was stopped by the Panther goal keeper. Coach Sonya Smith said the team controlled the game and didn't let the ball go into the Okeechobee side of the eld very often. "I'm very pleased with that. I love it when my goal keeper is bored. I think our skills have improved. We communicated well and our passes were pretty accurate," she explained. Smith said the team still must improve on goal scoring. She noted the girls were hesitant to use their left foot to kick the ball near the net, opting instead to wait until they got the ball in position for their right foot. By then, defenders were on them. OHS hosts Lincoln Park Academy on Friday at 6 p.m. at Brahman Stadium. The boys soccer team remained unbeaten with an 8-3 pounding of Port St. Lucie on Wednesday night. Okeechobee is now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in district play. Wilson Barahona and Brian Guerrero both had four goals and two assists. Angel Alvarez, OHS coach Lonnie Sears said the team also had to play without their top two defensive mid elders in the match. "We played well offensively but you could tell at times that we missed our senior defenders," he said. "We were undisciplined and panicked near the goal at times." OHS ladies hold on for 1-0 soccer win

Jada Rainey added 13 points for Sebastian. Alexandria Ducott had ve points to lead Osceola. A half-court trap by the Cowboys caused a number of Warrior turnovers in the rst few minutes of the game and Bellany got several easy baskets as Sebastian built leads of 16-2 and 19-4 after the rst quarter. Sebastian led 31-7 at the half and 41-10 after the third quarter. Sebastian coach Bill McCarthy said his team likes to use the half-court trap because it gives opponents a different look and he is able to involve his younger players with easy to learn and speci c assignments. "I was pretty pleased with our effort. We have a saying, you miss a layup you make yourself look bad, and if you don't know what you're doing you make the coach look bad," he noted. McCarthy praised the Lady Warriors because they held their own underneath and did some good things on offense. "Osceola competed very well under the boards and hit a high percentage of their free throws. I think if they stay under control and get to the free throw line they could be a pretty successful team," he added. McCarthy said a key to his team's success is the camaraderie on the team. He will lose his top two scorers next year, but has 13 returning players. A key to the program's success is off-season programs. For Osceola, Ducott grabbed four rebounds and had four steals. Alkecia Clayton had three points, and four steals. Bri Baker had two points, ve rebounds and one steal. OAA donates to Festival of TreesOAA community partners, staff, OAA Student Council decided to help in the community by donating this beautiful tree to the Festival of the Trees at Hospice of Okeechobee. Okeechobee Achievement Academy is trying to instill the need to be giving, sharing, and helpful in the community to our students. Mr. Watts, wood working instructor and volunteer, was instrumental in helping with the handmade wooden ornaments. Mrs. Murray from New Horizons helped other students make handmade ornaments from ribbon, pine cones, beads. Jennifer Harden our school bookkeeper and Dorothy Rucks, school health aide from the Florida Department of Health, graciously donated supplies, ideas, and time to put this tree together. As a school community, those at OAA feel it is very important to teach students the value of giving back. Special to the Okeechobee News
