Page 20 By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News Okee-Tantie Campground and Marina will once again be the major topic of an Okeechobee County Commission meeting with a lengthy agenda that could last all day. Developer Randall Henderson sharpened his pencil and came up with a new proposal for the development of Okee-Tantie. This time he has increased the amount of money he will pay the county and decreased the length of the lease. However, the state has a reversionary clause on part of the property that will probably play a big part in the deal. The county has two options in dealing with the state. The rst option is to buy the property outright from the state for the appraised value. Then they would have to get more than the appraised value from a New Okee-Tantie proposal offered See COUNTY — Page 2 IF YOU GO ...WHAT: Meeting of the Okeechobee County Commission WHERE: Okeechobee County Courthouse, 304 N.W. Second St. WHEN: 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 Machine shop in business since 1926By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News One of the oldest businesses in Okeechobee, Domer's Machine Shop is still in operation, still run by the same family and still doing a variety of things. Domer's was started in 1926 by Victor Jacob Domer. The Domers have a unique custom of using the father's rst name as the oldest son's middle name. Victor Jacob had a son named Russell Victor. Russell Victor's son, Ray Russell is the current owner of Domer's. Ray Russell's son, Justin Ray works in the family business. It all started back in 1920 when Victor Jacob, who was a watchmaker/jeweler in Sugarcreek, Ohio, and his wife, Emma, spent a winter in West Palm Beach. It took them 22 days to make the trip on the primitive roads of that day. When they went back home, Victor Jacob began to plan his move south. In 1922 Russell Victor was born. Then in 1924 the Domers moved to West Palm Beach where Victor Jacob built a house and worked at various jobs. In December, 1925, after taking a real estate tour on the new Connor's Highway to Okeechobee, the "Chicago of the South," as it was known then, Victor Jacob sold his home in West Palm Beach and bought a house in Okeechobee. At that time Okeechobee badl y needed his skills. His rst shop was located in the building at the corner of S. Parrott Avenue and West S. Park St. At this shop he repaired watches, guns, shoes, locks, typewriters, gramophones, manufactured branding irons and welded. His motto was "You break it, we x it." He eventually got into well drilling and invented a turbine pump. Domer's was one o f the rst venders of Gould pumps. Victor Jacob was responsible for several inventions, some of which were patented. Victor Jacob and his son, Russell Victor, were also in the automobile parts and repair business. They had the only wrecker in town. Some time before 1930 Victor Jacob built a house in East Okeechobee on Hancock Street, now known as S.E. Tenth Avenue. At that time East Okeechobee was the place to be. At rst he operated his shop out of the front of his house. He later built a shop next to his house at the location of the present Domer's shop. Because of the Great Depression, people Special to the Okeechobee NewsThis house was built by Victor Jacob Domer in the 1920s. At rst his shop was housed in the front of the house. Later Mr. Domer built a shop adjacent to his house. The rst meeting of what was to become Grace Brethren Church and later LIFE Church was held in this house. The house was located on Southeast 10th Avenue adjacent to the present Domer's Machine Shop. See SHOP — Page 2

had to gure out ways to make the machinery they had last longer. Since Victor Jacob's skills were in much demand the Domer family was able to weather the Great Depression better than some, even though the barter system was often used in payment. Victor Jacob and Russell Victor both inv ented and manufactured several models of lawn mowers. The mowers each had three w heels with the single back wheel mounted on a swivel. On one model the tips of the blades were bolted on and had to be detached for sharpening. All the mowers were durable and built to last. They came with a guarantee that the shaft would not bend. Some farmers used these mowers to chop cattle feed. They would have a pipe welded over a hole in the deck of the mower. They would feed cane through the hole to be ground by the mower blade. One of Victor Jacob's inventions came as a result of his trip from Ohio to Florida. In those days cars did not have piston rings. When his car went up mountains, the rear spark plugs would become fouled by oil. On the trip down the front plugs would become fouled. So he invented a spark plug called the Victo plug that would not foul with oil and that was repairable. Victor Jacob helped commercial shermen by inventing a boat propeller what would not get clogged in grass. The rst meeting of what eventually become Grace Brethren Church and more recently LIFE Church was held in the Domer home on S.E. Tenth Avenue on Nov. 5, 1933. Victor Jacob was of one of the two men who were elected as the rst deacons. He later served as treasurer and trustee. His wife, Emma, was the rst Sunday School Superintendent. Victor Jacob was also involved in city government. He served on the city council from January through September of 1933. Most probably he was appointed to serve part of a term. Then he served a full two-year term from January, 1935 to January 1937. Russell Victor served two terms on the city council. By that time the terms were for four years and he served from 1971 to 1979. Ray Russell is currently serving at another level of government. He is in his third term as county commissioner. His son, Justin Ray, took public service to an even higher level and served on Governor Rick Scott's staff from the governor's inauguration in 2010 until late 2012 when he returned to Okeechobee to work at the family business. In 1930, Victor Jacob purchased an airplane. That started a custom that has continued to this day. Russell Victor also owned an airplane and was a bombardier-navigator in World War II. Ray Russell has a pilot's license but does not own an airplane. Russell Victor was featured in the Florid a Cattlemen's Magazine for his manufacture of branding irons. Most of the branding irons used by local ranchers were manufactured and many even designed by Domer's Machine Shop. Ranchers usually had two branding irons made. While one was being used the other was being heated. Man y ranchers also had Domer's make branding irons with numbers so they could brand calves with the year they were born. Today the shop has 10 employees and still does well drilling and still makes branding irons. They also operate a machine shop, sell hydraulic hoses, install water systems and operate an industrial hardware store. However, windmills are giving way to solar pumps. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Good news about your business? Your civic group? The other option would be to give the state an undetermined portion of the money received from a developer. While the state's take is theoretically negotiable, information provided by the staff indicated the state would like to receive 50 percent. However, Mr. Henderson and Commissioner Bryant Culpepper, who has been championing this cause, have indicated that the percentage could be reduced to 25 percent. Of the 439 lots in the proposal, the state's reverter clause would include about 220 lots. Mr. Henderson's original proposal was for a 99-year lease. The new proposal is a 50-year lease for RV development and a 25y ear lease for the marina area. The original proposal was 2 percent of sales and 5 percent of rental incomes. The new proposal is $4,000 per lot up front in each of the four phases and 50 percent of the pro t earned from rental of RV sites, boats slips, fuel sales and convenient store/tackle and bait shop sales. Both the original and new proposals also include ad valorum taxes to the county based on the value of the individual lots. The new proposal also contains a direct access road for airboaters on the north end of the property. Turning to other matters, the board is scheduled to consider making nominations and/or appointments to the children's services council, construction industry licensing board, Okeechobee Utility Authority, planning board/board of adjustments and appeals, agri-civic center advisory committee, library advisory board, and the tourist development council. Many of the seats on these boards and committees have terms that expire March 1. Commissioners will also consider an amendment to the contract with Waste Management that includes a new rate schedule. Commissioners will conduct a public hearing to consider a proposed amendment to the Okeechobee County Comprehensive Plan that addresses the compatibility of land uses in the county that are adjacent or near the Avon Park Air Force Range. If approved, the amendment will be transmitted to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and other state agencies for review. The commissioners will also present service awards to qualifying employees for the quarter ending Dec. 31. At 1:30 p.m. commissioners are scheduled to hold a follow up strategic planning session at the public safety complex. They will review the vision statement that was formulated at the last planning session on Dec. 13. They will also review the mission statement that was discussed at the last session and discuss ideas for obtainable goals for the next ve years and prioritize those goals. Church should pay taxes Maybe if churches had to pay property t axes, they would build more modest buildings and use more of the money they receive in donations to help the poor. Imagine the good they could do with the millions they s pend on these big fancy churches when a utilitarian meeting hall would serve just as w ell.Ban on mixed drinks If you think the city should lift the ban on mixed drinks on Sundays and perhaps j oin the 21st Century, please go by Applebee’s and sign the petition. I believe you have to ask for the petition. They aren’t being pushy about it. And city voters, don’t be s hy. Call your city councilmen and tell them w hat you think.County spending The county is planning on spending $2 million to build a building for the driver license of ce and the property appraiser. T here are so many buildings that are already s itting empty that could be used instead. T hese buildings already have sewer, water, and parking but the county is planning on b uilding it next to the tax collectors of ce w here they have to get an exception from t he city for parking. A lot of small towns all over Florida are using old stores like the old W almart building. U-Save could be used, it is an eye sore sitting there empty and it’s big enough to house all of the county of ces. It w ould be a one shopping for county services. There is the old Sears building plus some more on the town square, another building is on the east side of town, the engineering of ce building across from the where they plan on building the new building and the c ounty already owns building that are only half full that they don’t want to use. There are a lot of buildings that the county could use and help clean up the community by getting empty buildings occupied. What is wrong with the way it is now, the driver’s license building is on South 441 and has been there for several decades? I suggest that to save $2 million of tax payer money that I will drive to another county the one time every eight years to renew my license. Please EMAIL the commissioners and tell them to stop wasting our money. They say that no one ever contacts them with suggestions. Also the government is known for spending more money on a project than they said they were going to, so they say $2 million but I’m sure that it would be a lot more by the time they get done Maybe they want their names on the walls of new buildings, and this is the reason to spend money while they have to borrow money to make the yearly budget and they just closed OkeeTantie park. I don’t get it. In a move for the state to save money they gave it to the county. The state let the individual counties decide if they want to keep the of ce and if they decide to keep it they are responsible for paying for it. I’m sure there will be some who gripe about the county spending money on the Drivers License of ce, but I bet there would be a lot more complaining if they didn’t, and everyone had to drive to another county to get your license renewed. Save the money. As it stands the sheriffs department has not had raises in years. How do we expect to keep quality of cers in this town if the pay does not increase with cost of living or other counties. And NO I do not work for the department. The sheriff is the person who decides if the deputies get a raise, what they are paid, how many are employed and what rank they are. The commissioners only approve or disapprove his budget request. I for one am willing to drive to another county once every eight years to renew my driver’s license to save 2 million dollars. Sometimes remodeling an existing building, especially a change of occupancy, e.g. mercantile to business, entails a lot of cost. Today’s handicap accessibility, green energy and use speci c modi cations can be very expensive. I seem to recall that it is a state mandate that counties assume the drivers license issuance responsibilities and to a speci c set of requirements. When I was at the driver’s license of ce recently, they only had two employees working there. How big does a building have to be for two employees? Can’t they just add employees in a building the county already owns? Beggars might be prosI recently read an article entitled “Beggars might be pros,” and thought that everyone that has a giving heart should read this. Not all people who ask for help and shed crocodile tears are always telling the truth. As director of a mission myself, my husband and I ask questions, make some calls and try to nd out if the need is really there. There are people out there who are really in a needy situation and they don’t mind if you take the time with them to nd out if what they are telling you is the truth. If someone asks you for money or wants something right now, usually they’ve got something else in mind. Our food pantries are not free grocery stores, but are for emergency needs. In the past, I have had to eat crow when I found out some sold their food stamps and then wanted food from us, were given money that was later used to buy drugs, and many more incidents we have encountered. The people in this county who give want to know that we are using their funds wisely. So, let’s all work together and do just that. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Bruce & Mary Anne Swinford, Big Lake Missions OutreachFood Check-Out WeekMembers of the Okeechobee County Farm Bureau want to help consumers make wise choices as they shop for foods for their families. During Food Check-Out Week, scheduled for Feb. 17-23, Farm Bureau volunteers will provide information about healthy diets and food labels to area residents. Food Check-Out Week also creates an opportunity to highlight the safety, abundance and afford ability of foods provided by our farmers and ranchers. The recent economic recession has cut into the average household budget in Florida and across the nation, affecting the money available fo r food purchases. But according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables has remained stabl e compared to dessert and snack foods. Th e agency’s assessment included carrots, bananas, tomatoes, broccoli, Red Delicious apples and Iceberg lettuce as sample items. In 2009 the average household in the U.S. devoted less than 10 percent of its disposable income to food purchases. Households in more than 40 other nations spent mor e than 20 percent. In 24 countries the gur e was 30 percent or more. According to th e USDA, domestic farmers and ranchers receive 19 cents out of every dollar spent on food. Off-farm costs absorb the rest of it. In 1980 the farm producer received 31 cents ou t of every food dollar. Recent spikes in retail prices have been the result of higher energ y costs to process, haul and refrigerate food; wholesale prices have remained stable. As part of Food Check-Week, Okeechobe e County Farm Bureau members will make a food/ nancial donation to Martha’s Hous e on Feb. 25. We hope this contribution will be a tangible expression of our commitmen t to making a safe and abundant food suppl y for consumers here and across the nation. We invite all local citizens to join us in this celebration. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 5 Okeechobee News February 27, 2013 By Eric KoppOkeechobee News A local teen was placed in a juvenile detention center following his arrest for allegedly running from deputies to apparently avoid arrest, and then ghting with them w hen he was apprehended. Bret McKlain Corrales, 15, N.W. 34th St., Okeechobee, was arrested Friday, Feb. 22, on a felony charge of resisting a law enforcement of cer with violence, and misdemeanor charges of resisting a law enforcement of cer without violence and criminal mischief. Corrales was later arrested on a juvenile take and hold warrant that charged him with the misdemeanors of possession of marijuana under 20 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia and contempt of court failure to appear for drug court. The teenager was rst booked into the Okeechobee County Jail then taken to the St. Lucie Regional Detention Center in Fort Pierce. An arrest report by Deputy Bart Potter, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Of ce (OCSO), stated that he was agged down by the teen's mother who had just seen her son riding his bicycle into the Pine Ridge subdivision on N.E. 28th Ave. The teen had been reported missing, added the report. When the teen saw the OCSO patrol unit and his mother's vehicle he began to pedal his bicycle faster in an effort to get away, indicated Deputy Potter. The deputy stated that when he closed in on Corrales the teen would turn around and start pedaling in the opposite direction. This reportedly happened a couple of times before the deputy nally reached out of his moving OCSO unit and grabbed onto the teen's shirt. But, Corrales was able to pull free of the deputy's grip, added the report. Deputy Potter stated that he stopped his vehicle and started chasing the teen on foot, at which point the teen got off his bicycle and jumped into the back seat of his mother's vehicle. When the deputy reached into that back seat to grab the teen, Corrales allegedly slid out the other door and started to run away. The deputy went on to state that he was able to catch up to the eeing teenager and place him in handcuffs. But, according to the arrest report, Corrales was not going to give up easily. Deputy Potter said he put Corrales in the back seat of a patrol unit being operated by Deputy Heath Hughes. As the deputies, along with their supervisor Deputy Sergeant Shannon Peterson, discussed what had just happened they heard a "loud pop." When they looked back at Deput y Hughes' car they reportedly saw shattered glass everywhere. Apparently, Corrales had kicked out a rear window. Deputy Potter said he grabbed Corrales as he was coming out the of the car and held onto him while Sgt. Peterson and Deput y Hughes wrestled with the 160-pound teenager. They were nally able to control Corrales by placing leg restraints on him. The report went on to point out that Corrales was bleeding from some sort of wound to his arm. He was checked out by emergency medical personnel who determined the wound was not serious. Corrales was then taken to the county jail without further incident. Okeechobee Arrest Report By Eric KoppOkeechobee News Detectives from the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force served a search warrant on a N.E. 14th Ave. home and allegedly found cash, a digital scale and suspected marijuana packaged for sale. Arrested in the Friday, Feb. 22, raid was Terrance E. Pryor, 34. Pryor was charged with the felony of possession of marijuana with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a church, and the misdemeanors of possession of marijuana under 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to an arrest report members of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Of ce Special Response Team rst entered the home and secured Pryor, who was in the home alone. During a search of the home, the detectives reportedly found: 11 plastic baggies containing possible marijuana that weighed 9.1 grams; $154 in cash, that was in small denominations; possible marijuana seeds and stems that weighed 2.0 grams; a pack of small, empty plastic baggies; a digital scale; and, scissors with a residue on the blades. Pryor WEST PALM BEACH The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is moving forward with its comprehensive land assessment by beginning an evaluation of agency lands in the Kissimmee/Okeechobee Assessment Region, which includes the Upper and Lower Kissimmee basins and the Lake Okeechobee watershed. The Kissimmee/Okeechobee region is the second of ve geographic areas that are being reviewed in the ongoing assessment of approximately 750,000 acres of fee-owned lands properties in which the District has full ownership rights. As part of a broader effort to maximize its resources to meet mission-critical responsibilities, the District is conducting the assessment to ensure that each parcel the agency owns is being put to its most effective use. To ensure all relevant information is available for a thorough analysis, the District is seeking public feedback on the use of its lands within the Kissimmee/Okeechobee region. Stakeholders and the general public can examine detailed land portfolios and submit comments on speci c properties through March 18 by visiting www.sfwmd. gov/landassessment. In addition, public workshops have been scheduled at the SFWMD Okeechobee Service Center on March 8 and at the SFWMD St. Cloud Field Station on March 12. At the same time as the public comment period for the Kissimmee/Okeechobee region, District staff will be reviewing feedbac k received on lands in the Upper Lakes region, which includes parts of Orange, Osceol a and Polk counties. The District accepted more than 450 public comments through its website on four project areas in the region, as well as additional input during a public workshop on Feb. 12 in St. Cloud. For more information on the SFWMD land assessment process or to submit comments on lands in the Kissimmee/Okeechobee region, visit www.sfwmd.gov/landassessment. SFWMD assessing agency lands

We Treat Kids Too! At Florida Foot Specialist we treat all problems with the foot and ankle. There are a wide range of problems that affect the foot and ankle. These can range from orthopedic problems and ” atfeet to neurologic problem i.e. neuropathy. A large number of our patients are diabetic, due to the numerous complications that accompany diabetes. We also deal with fungal infections of the nails and feet, as well as vascular disorders that can cause long-term problems w ith the foot and ankle. We are also a full-service surgical practice. We perform several minimally invasive surgeries to treat a wide range of problems. Heel pain is one of the most common problems we see in our podiatry of“ ce. It is like the common cold for a Podiatrist. The majority of patients have a problem called plantar fasciitis. However, there are other causes. So a full exam is recommended to rule out these other causes. Plantar Fasciitis is an in” ammation of the plantar fascia. The plantar Florida Foot SpecialistYour Neighborhood Foot & Ankle Specialists fascia is a ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the ball of the foot and even has slips that go into the toes. The main job of the plantar fascia is to hold the arch up. As you walk and your arch falls, it puts extra strain on the plantar fascia. This causes small tears and eventually thickening of the plantar fascia. The thickening causes pain on the bottom of the heel. If someones plantar fasciitis becomes so advanced that surgery is required, we at Florida Foot Specialist perform a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to release the tension on the plantar fascia and resolve the patients heel pain. The procedure is performed at a hospital but is an outpatient procedure with the patient walking out of the facility later that day. If you currently have any problem in your feet or ankles make an appointment to see us in the of“ ce today. Delaying treatment can increase the problem and require more extensive treatment. Dr. Juan Teodoro, who a native of Panama, attended high school in Miami and graduated from the University of Florida. However, it was in Pittsburgh, where he rst came in contact with Dr. Glen Castro, a native of West Virginia. They both attended the same dental school. Both dentists decided the Pittsburgh winters were too much for them. So Dr. Teodoro opened a practice in Fort Myers and Dr. Castro opened a practice in Sebastian. Through visits to a good friend who lives in Okeechobee, Dr. Teodoro came to know the town. The two dentists met again at a professional conference and decided to jointly open Dental Surgery Specialists in Okeechobee while still maintaining their separate practices. Dental Surgery Specialists offer root canals, dental implants, laser periodontal surgery, oral surgery and teeth extractions. The telephone number is 863-261-8273 and the address is 113 N.E. 19th Drive. Okeechobee 7 6 3 6 9 0 5 12 Okeechobee News February 27, 2013 By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News South Fork, using strong pitching and timely hitting to upset Okeechobee 6-3 in girls high school softball action Friday, sent notice that District 12-7A will be competitive this year. Katie Kobold and Morgan Blourne combined to hold Okeechobee to only three hits in the game. Okeechobee took a two-run lead in the rst as Elisia Garcia scored on a wild pitch and Jaryaca Baker hit a homerun but it was mostly downhill after that. South Fork battled back as they scored twice in the second, twice in the fourth, and added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Other than a misplay on a slow ground ball in the rst, the Lady Bulldogs were awless in the eld. "I think we got comfortable with the early lead and against some teams we can do that, with South Fork we can't," Brahman Coach Heather Gillis said. "They have similar characteristics and qualities to us. It was a good look for our team and they needed something like this at this point in the season." Linzie High of Indiantown had two hits and scored twice in the game and Kaitlyn Bullis added an RBI double in the fourth. Ali Little had two hits and three runs batted in for South Fork (5-2, 2-0). OHS did little on offense after the rst inning other than a single run in the third inning. The last 10 Brahman hitters were retired in order. Coach Gillis said Blourne was a good pitcher who was able to execute her fastball and changeup to keep the Lady Brahman hitters off balance. "As a former pitcher I always got myself together when I had a tough team to compete against and I take that as a compliment." Gillis said it appears every opponent is hyped to play the Brahmans because of their strong history and tradition of success. She said the girls will have to do a better job of dealing with that mentally because they don't have any problems playing the game physically. Jordan Lawlis and Delaney Osceola pitched well in relief for OHS, (4-2). "We can't have a self-defeating attitude. We kind of got down on ourselves and lost con dence tonight and didn't trust what we can do. We need to build some con dence. We know they can hit, we've shown that in several games," she added. OHS played three consecutive nights this week, with games at Vero Beach on Tuesda y and Port St. Lucie on Wednesday. The Lad y Brahmans host Suncoast on Thursday for a varsity game at 6 p.m. Junior Varsity softball fans get a treat Saturday when the Lad y Brahmans host a triple header with Port St. Lucie and American Heritage Delray Beach. By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News Presentations by the 19th Judicial Circuit V ictim’s Rights Coalition and the Workforce Solutions of ce in Okeechobee highlighted the agenda when the Okeechobee Community Collaborative Council met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Terry Owen of the Victims Rights Coalition and the Port St. Lucie Police Department announced a Crime Victims’ Rights W eek motorcycle event that will be hosted by Okeechobee County Sheriff Paul May. The motorcade will ride from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department on Midway Road to Okeechobee’s Flagler Park on April 20 to highlight the importance of protection of crime victims’ rights. She told the agencies that many of their clients are crime victims and that they should w ork together to help serve their needs. She said a trust fund created from court fees is designed to help crime victims with counseling, medical bills, sometimes lost wages, and even funeral expenses. Courtney Moyette and other employees of the Okeechobee Workforce Solutions Ofce brie y explained the many services they provide to Okeechobee. Moyette serves as liaison to businesses. She helps to recruit applicants for jobs that become available. They also work a lot on resume workshops to help people nd work and become more attractive job candidates. They also have several programs where they reimburse employers. A 12-week program provides employees free to businesses if they provide the worker with on-the-job training. If they decide not to keep the employee, they are requested to provide a letter of reference for that person. Harry Henderson is the workshop instructor for Workforce Solutions. He explained the interviews and resumes are very important in a competitive job market. His goal is to better prepare and assist job seekers. They also hold one-on-one clinics to help improve resumes. Other employees serve as advocates for veterans in need of employment and homeless veterans. By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News Nearly 550 of the best shotgun and clay shooting competitors spent last week in Okeechobee as Quail Creek Plantation hosted for the ninth consecutive year the prestigious Seminole Cup. General Manager Fred Fanizzi said the event is considered among the top ve National Sporting Clay Association sanctioned shoots in the nation and serves as the kickoff to the annual tour. The competitors ranged in ages from nine years old and up and over 80 percent of them came from outside Florida. Mr. Fanizzi said the event has a huge economic impact on Okeechobee businesses like motels, restaurants, and various retail stores each year. They started to host the event in 2005. He noted they also employ 100 people from around the area during the competition. The competitors compete in three preliminary events with 100 targets each and later the two-day main event, held Friday and Saturday where they shoot at another 200 targets. By the time the event was done on Sunday, a quarter of a million targets w ould be shot at. Grant Kirkup of Edmonton, Alberta, said this tournament is a great way to start the shooting season. "These buys put on a great performance and this is top shelf. I think it is one of the best places in North America to shoot," he said. Kirkup said the course is fantastic, the course offers a lot of variety, and challenges all levels of shooters. He started competitively ve years ago. As a bird hunter, his season in Canada lasted about six weeks. Clay shooting like this lasts six to eight months per year. "It is very addictive. I've been told it's more addictive than cocaine and twice as expensive. It is a game of precision and you have to read targets and move the shotgun well. The target setters here are very good at deceiving our eyes," he added. The event also featured a large number of vendors that showcased their products like shotguns, ammunition, ear plug, eye protection, apparel and other items. The event attracts people from all over the world including Jamaica, Canada, Europe and other countries. Fanizzi said they provide southern hospitality, 150 acres of target ranges, good food and a great atmosphere and they intend to continue to host the event. Steve VanHelden of Kalispell, Mont., said he is used to shooting in pine trees but that palm trees and warmer weather is a nice change. He has shot competitively for about 10 years and always marks this event on his calendar. "I'm really excited to be here. There is a lot of tough competition and the targets are really good here. I just love it here." Mike Hogan of Fort Pierce said the area is lucky to have a great facility like this. He said he competes here every year and enjoys getting to see friends from across the country. He notes when the wind is too bad to sh on the coast, this is a nice change. "This is a world class facility. The nice part is there are two courses, beginner and tournament and new shooters won't be intimidated by the targets on the harder course. I think it's a great facility for shooters of all levels," he added. Pat Lieske, who is one of the nation's top shooters and an instructor, said he has competed at this event since it came to Okeechobee. His advice to novice shooters is to get a lesson because you should learn the fundaments and that instruction really makes a difference. "If you don't know what you're doing you might get discouraged. Lessons will get you off on the right foot. I think this area is luck y to have this facility. It is one of those places that you know what to expect and they deliver every single time," he added. Fanizzi thanked the Okeechobee Tourist Development Council for their support o f the event.
