In the last ve years the total number o f people employed by Okeechobee County and the county's constitutional of cers has decreased. At the same time many of those employees have not seen a raise during that time period and they no w take home less because they are required to pa y into the state retirement fund. Okeechobee Forecast By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News “It’s a very unique thing,” Pam Hales, founder of Craft Fair in the Woods, said of the event. The idea came from Mrs. Hales’ practice of holding an holding an open house every year and exhibiting crafts. One year her house was being remodelled and she could not hold the event there. John Glenn, of Freedom Ranch, suggested she hold the event there. From that rst small event six y ears ago, the craft fair has grown. Last year there were about 60 vendors and Mrs. Hales is hoping for at least that many vendors for the event this year which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The setting is unique in that, unlike some craft fairs held in downtown areas, this craft fair is held in a beautiful, quiet, peaceful, wooded setting which features swamp buggy rides and swamp cabbage. The venders will display their wares either under a large, open pavilion or out under the shade trees. For the rst time this year there will be pony rides for children. Crafts available will include Christmas decorations, jewelry, woodcrafts, ne art, baked and canned goods, fabric, yarn, paper and wire crafts and home and yard decor. In addition to crafts there is an equestrian arena show which is different each year. The arena show features such things as calf roping and barrel racing. Freedom Ranch is located at 11655 U.S. 441 S.E., just west of S.R. 15B. There will be signs marking the location of the event as well as American ags on either side o f the gate. For more information call 863-7639800. Craft fair to be held in unique setting This year Nov. 4 marks the day to change the clocks back from Daylight Savings Time. It also marks the 25th anniversary of the annual Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery program. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) are once again working with local re departments nationwide to raise awareness on the importance of working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in helping to keep families safe in their homes. Thirty-eight percent of fatal re injuries occur in homes with no smoke alarms, while 24 percent occur in homes in which at least one smoke alarm is present but fails to operate, frequently due to dead or missing batteries. On Nov. 4, at 2 a.m., most Americans will “fall back” by turning clocks back one hour. Don’t forget to change the batteries in EVERY smoke alarm in your house! Change your clock; change your battery Special to the Okeechobee News/ Pam HalesCrowds at last year’s Craft Fair in the Woods stroll around the shaded grounds of Freedom Ranch. A mendments The 11 amendments on the ballot are really making voting take a long t ime. Please do not wait until you get to t he polls to decide what you are going to do on the amendments. There is a lot of information online available to help you make up your mind. And don’t forget that y ou can vote early on Friday or Saturday at the old Okeechobee County Courthouse so you don’t have to stand in line on Tuesday. I’m with the folks who say “just vote no” on all of the amendments because our state constitution is already too clutt ered with things that seemed like a good idea at the time. All of these issues could and should be handled by the Legislature. If you put something in the constitution and you nd out it was not such a great idea, you have to pass another amendment to get rid of it. SR 70 West Why are they cutting down all the t rees around Popash Slough? Having not been in that area to see t he work, it seems that with the recent ooding complaints the removal of vegetation from a ow way would certainly aid drainage. A quick peek at Google Earth does indeed show a hydrological connection to the area north of the railroad where so many people were ooded following the recent heavy rain events. Maybe using a ditch to convey water rather the grow ow impeding vegetation is the end goal of this project. I’m sure those impacted by the ooding hope that is the answer. I would like them to do something about the drainage in front of my house. However, I know others were worse off than myself.Election Whoever wins this election, I hope and pray the country can pull together to do what is best for our nation. It is going to take a lot of work to turn things around. People are going to have to sacrice some of the bene ts they are used to receiving from the government handouts, because we can’t keep borrowing money. We have to cut the budget down to what we can afford. We as a nation have run up a $16 trillion credit card bill and it’s time to cut up the card and start making a plan to pay it off before the interest eats us alive.Halloween festivities The Halloween Festival at the AgriCivic Center was again very nice. And the party the church held in Flagler Park was also great. It seems people in Okeechobee really like to dress up and celebrate Halloween. Inaugural Car Show ‘Rock’s OkeechobeeWe would like to thank the People of Okeechobee and the surrounding communities for all their heartfelt support that was seen at the First Annual Okeechobee Rockin’ Rod Car Show & Swap Meet Event that was held at the Philippine-American Cultural Foundation of South Florida’s Garden Complex on Oct. 14. Sponsored by the Okeechobee Rehabilitation Facility, Inc. (DBA/ARC of Okeechobee), a local non-pro t 501(c)(3) organization bene tting those in our community suffering with developmental disabilities, this fundraising event for the ARC consumers was indeed a success. And it was a success because Okeechobee has a big heart! It is truly amazing to see what can be accomplished when people come together for a great cause. Many of those who attended said this event was by far one of the largest and nicest car shows Okeechobee has ever seen. We would like to extend a very special thanks to our Gold Sponsors, TD Bank and Okeechobee Motor Company, for their support and belief in the Okeechobee Rehabilitation Facility’s mission to provide services to those special individuals we serve—our consumers. The dedication of individuals from these organizations serves as examples for us all. People like Diane Davies, Marnie Amiet, and Lisa Jenkins of TD Bank, and Okeechobee Motor Company’s own Dowling Watford, with his ongoing passionate support for worthwhile causes in our community sets these persons apart. We would also like to thank our Master of Ceremonies; Marc Sandlin, owner of Style Studio for a outstanding job at the microphone! His kind heart was able to raise extra donations during the event! A special thanks goes out to Mr. Diego Ganuza for that perfect timing y over in his vintage T28 airplane during the singing of our National Anthem. Thanks also to WAVE 92.7 and Oldies 103.7, along with WOKC 100.9 for helping us get the word out. A special thanks to Okeechobee County Sheriff Paul May and Undersheriff Major Noel Stephen, and the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Auxiliary, as well as Corrections Of cer Cashwell and the Weekend Warriors, all of whom helped make this event possible. A special thanks also goes out to Police Chief Denny Davis of the Okeechobee City Police Department for his support and to City PD Detectives Bill Saum and John Zeigler for serving on our event planning committee. A very special thanks goes out to our car show judges; Stan Curren, Diane Hagan, The Honorable Judge Jerry Bryant, and Jason Anderson. Your participation and support was and is greatly appreciated. Special thanks also to Commissioner Bryant Cullpepper for serving on our planning committee and being such a great advocate of our mission for people with disabilities in our community. A big thank you also goes out to all the local businesses and entities that made this even t possible; Total Roadside Services, Diane Hagan for Supervisor of Elections, The Gun Shop, Toni’s Chic Boutique & Consignment, Brown Co w Sweetery, Verizon, Lehman Auto Body, Crystal Drake for State Representative District 55, Phil Baughman for County Commissioner, Mixon Real Estate, Backyard Bar-B-Q, Everglades Farm Equipment, AAA Radiator & Air Conditioning, Garrard Tackle Shop, Lawn Tamer Equipment, Inc., American Drilling Service, Inc., TEEZ2PLEEZ, Lunkers Sports Grill, Bill Sherman fo r Property Appraiser, Hungry Howie’s, Bell a Rose Day Spa, Affordable Art Gallery, Matt Or r of Waste Management, Taylor Rental, Corett a Platt, Steve Lawrence of Halsey and Grif th, and to Eric Vonderau of Custom Sights and Sounds. A special thanks to Okeechobee Rehabilitation Facility’s Board of Directors; Sid Estrada; Chair, Gwen Marsh; Vice Chair, Mary Autry, and Dr. Pat Cooper for supporting the idea of a car show fundraiser. We also want to thank all of the staff and volunteers at the Okeechobe e Rehabilitation Facility who worked tirelessl y behind the scenes to keep up with the ongoing mission to our consumers while engaged in making preparations for this event. Special recognition indeed goes out to our marketing director Jeannie Bramlett, and also to Chris McArthur for all of their outstanding efforts in organizing and coordinating this event. Recent budget cuts have made it much more dif cult to provide necessary services to our needy consumers. Due to the econom y situation the ARC can no longer depend solel y on governmental funding. This First Annual Rockin’ Rod Car Show & Swap Meet turned ou t to be a great starting point to bring awareness back into our community of the vital services and programs offered by the ARC to assist thos e with developmental disabilities. Plans for next year’s car show are alread y underway. We will announce the of cial dat e soon. You can keep track of the year’s progress by visiting Rockin’ Rod Car Show or The ARC o f Okeechobee on Facebook. Our new web sit e is being built as we speak. May God bless each and every one of you that came out to our even t this year and we look forward to your continued support. Fred Burt Lawrence Jr., 50, N.W. 38th Ave., was arrested Oct. 31 on a felony charge of traf cking in methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. An arrest report by a detective with the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force stated that Lawrence was found to be in possession of a substance that, w hen eld tested, indicated a positive result for the presence of meth. Lawrence was stopped by the detective in the 38000 block of U.S. 441 N. because he w as reportedly not wearing his seat belt. When the detective asked for permission to search the man's 2003 Chevrolet truck Lawrence would not consent to the search. Another task force detective then utilized their K-9, Remi, to sniff the exterior of the truck. Remi reportedly alerted to the vehicle. A glass smoking pipe was then found beside the driver's seat that also contained a white residue. When eld tested, that residue indicated a positive result for the presence of methamphetamine. Remi then sniffed Lawrence and again gave a positive alert, continued the report. The detective then searched Lawrence and allegedly found a plastic bag hidden in his crotch area. A substance in the bag was eld tested, and that test indicated a positive result for the presence of meth. According to the arrest report, the meth weighed 15 grams. Lawrence reportedly told the detective that he had just purchased the alleged meth from a friend in Frostproof for $850. A task force detective said Thursday that Lawrence could have sold the meth on the street for approximately $130 per gram. The arrest report goes on to state that this investigation is continuing. By Eric KoppOkeechobee News A man was arrested on a felony drug charge after police had to break up an argument between the man and his girlfriend in the Walgreens parking lot. Salomon DeJesus Serrano, 18, N.W. Sixth St., Okeechobee, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 31, on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance (alprazolam) without a prescription. He is being held in the Okeechobee County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond. Of cer Scott Morgan, of the Okeechobee City Police Department (OCPD), stated in his arrest report that the pill was found on Serrano when he was searched by fellow OCPD Of cer Jack Boon. Police also found a shotgun and shotgun shells in the vehicle being operated by Serrano. Of cer Morgan pointed out in his report that he took the shotgun and shells "... for safekeeping." The of cer went on to add that the argument had not turned physical. Couple’s argument leads to felony drug arrest Salomon Serrano In 2007 the total number of full-time funded employees of the county commissioners and the constitutional of cers was 461. Today that number has dwindled to 408. Almost all county departments saw decreases in the number of employees during that time. The largest reduction numerically was at the road department which went from 35 to 23. Next was the building department which went from 13 to ve employees. However, the number of full-time funded employees of re/rescue increased from 39 to 46.5. Looking at the constitutional of cers, the clerk of the courts lost one employee, going from 41 to 40. The property appraiser went from 18 employees down to 13. The tax collector lost three employees, going from 14 to 11. The number of employees of the sheriff dropped from 205 to 200. The supervisor of elections has kept the same number of employees for the last 5 years3. COUNTYContinued From Page 1 Fraud (DOI), said a sixth member of a painting crew that was painting airplanes at the Okeechobee County Airport was arrested Tuesday. He said Jessika C. Pantojas, 33, Clapton Drive, Deland, was arrested on a felony charge of failure to secure worker's compensation coverage. She was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail under a bond of $2,500. Jail records indicate she has since been released on bond. DOI Detective Tom Flannery made the arrest. That arrest stemmed from the arrests of ve other painting contractors on Thursday, Oct. 25. All of them were arrested on a felony charge of not having worker's comp coverage. One of those men, Charles Cavalcante Lima, 39, S.W. Gailwood St., is the owner of Okeechobee Painting, LLC, said Detective Hill. The rest of those arrested are sub contractors, including Pantojas. Pantojas had two people working for her at the time of her arrest, indicated the detective. Detective Hill also said that Jefferson Ferreina DaCosta, 27, Regal Drive, Port St. Lucie, was taken into custody Thursday, Nov. 1, by Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. He said a federal warrant was issued for DaCosta in 2007 and that the authorities have been looking for him since that time. DaCosta will now be deported, but Detective Hill wasn't sure where he will be sent. Of last week's arrest, the DOI investigator said there were six stop-work orders issued that "... completely shut down Okeechobee Painting, LLC." Stop work orders were also issued to the subcontractors, he added. Detective Hill added that he knew Lima because he arrested the painter in 2009 for not having worker's compensation coverage. Lima did, however, obtain coverage after that arrest. "Our main concern is you had seven different companies at the location and not a single person had worker's compensation coverage if there had been an injury," said Detective Hill of last week's arrests. He went on to say his investigation is continuing. PAINTERSContinued From Page 1 Jefferson DaCosta Jessika C. MurphyOkeechobee News Two disappointed teams will face each other tonight at Brahman Stadium and one of them will go home even more disappointed after the game. Olympic Heights (6-2) and Okeechobee (4-4) both had designs on post-season play this year but both teams were eliminated Monday when Sebastian River and South Fork won their district games. The Bulldogs and Sharks will represent District 14-6A in the post season. Okeechobee may have more to play for. They can have a winning season for only the third time in 16 years, if they defeat Olympic Heights and Clewiston next week. The Lions are a hard team to read this y ear. They have won big, 47-0 over Spanish River and 36-0 over Suncoast, but only defeated Palm Beach Lakes 14-8, a team OHS routed 58-0. Olympic Heights runs the football and does it well. John Cleristor had a big game against Okeechobee last year and has averaged nearly seven yards per carry and has 417 yards on the season with three touchdowns. Jim Derival and Wesley Innocent also have rushed for three touchdowns this year. The Lions had only passed the ball 31 times entering Monday’s game. QB Richard Thompson has thrown four touchdown passes. Deago Sama is their best target in the passing game with three touchdown receptions. OHS will be without top playmakers Lavante Spivey and Fabian Smith, who are a big part of their defensive secondary. Spivey will be replaced at quarterback by Jack Radebaugh. Radebaugh and Jose Santibanez and younger players will have to pick up the slack in the defensive back eld. On offense DJ Washington and Elijowan Williams have combined for over 1,000 rushing and 10 touchdowns. Al Fludd leads the team with 18 receptions and ve touchdown receptions. OHS Coach Chris Branham said he expects Olympic Heights to run the football and try to eliminate mistakes, “It could be a matchup of two very evenly matched teams. We’ll try to get the ball in our athlete’s hands as quickly as possible. On defense we’ll continue to play well.” Okeechobee held South Fork to ten points and held Palm Beach Lakes to 102 yards in total offense in the past two games. Okeechobee celebrates homecoming tonight, one week later than scheduled due to Hurricane Sandy. They will crown the king and queen at halftime and vote on the oats that appeared in Thursday night’s parade. Once in a rare while, our lives intersect w ith someone who is literally changing history. Okeechobee Presbyterian Church w ould like to give the community the opportunity to meet a young lady who is changing the history and lives of Mozambique, Africa. Her story is an amazing, unique and powerful story of what God can do with a committed life. Her name is Jennifer Jestes, and as a single, white, American girl, she founded Project Liberty—a non-pro t organization helping orphaned, abandoned, abused, HIV/Aids and tuberculosis children in Mozambique. Jennifer will be sharing her story and photos at Okeechobee Presbyterian Church Sunday, Nov. 4, in a special 6 p.m. evening service, as well as the 10 a.m. morning w orship. A love offering for Jennifer will be received during the evening service. This w ill be a unique opportunity, especially for y oung people. In her own words, she says: “As a little girl I dreamed of going to Africa to change the world! Seeing the wild lions, crocodiles and experiencing African life. I had this image in my mind of what I had seen of Africa on National Geographic and I was going to impart on the adventure of my life. “Now after 10 years of living in Mozambique, Africa, lying deathly sick in a remote hospital in Zambia with malaria, surviving a mob of 200 angry people, living through missile explosions and riots, I have come to realize that my adventure is a reality. “When I rst started my orphanage in Mozambique, Africa I had nothing; but my dreams. Learning to let God carry-out our dreams and visions is key! He is the one responsible for our outcomes, we are just the tools He uses! In my rst orphan home, I had 15 teenagers, no beds, no stove, nothing but me! During this I realized that sometimes God is just looking for a willing someone with a dream to take that the rst step.” 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Friday, November 2nd 8:00am 6:00pm Saturday, November 3rd 9:00am 3:00pm LOCATION:The Historic Courthouse Supervisor of Elections Of ce 304 NW 2nd StreetPlease contact the Elections Of ce if you have any questions about voting in the November 6th Election: elections@voteokeechobee.com or at 763-4014 LAST DAYS OF EARLY VOTE Accident Victims...Call Us First!€ Tractor Trailer Crashes € Auto Crashes € Motorcycle Crashes € Wrongful Death FREEConsultation Se Habla Espaol Phones answered 24 Hours, 7 days-a-week! www.crashinjuries.com 4 4 6 7 7 1 0 0 13 Okeechobee News November 2, 2012 Jennifer Jestes to speak at Okeechobee Presbyterian Courtesy photoMission worker, Jennifer Jestes will speak this Sunday at Okeechobee Presbyterian Church in a special 6 p.m. evening service as well as at the service held at 10 a.m. Special to the Okeechobee News/ OCARed Ribbon WeekOkeechobee Christian Academy kicked off Red Ribbon Week with a guest speaker to help educate parents, teachers and students about the dangers of drugs and the consequences of drug use. By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News State-ranked Venice dominated Okeechobee in the 3-7A regional quarter nal, 10-25, 14-25, and 14-25 with an impressive display of power and precision at the Lady Brahman gym on Wednesday night. Okeechobee hung tough in the rst game but never could get a lead in any of the three games. Okeechobee trailed only 7-6 in the rst game before the Lady Indians went on an 18-4 run. Venice continued to dominate in the second game as they built leads of 13-3 and 20-6. Okeechobee did cut the lead to 1422 but that would be as close as they got. Okeechobee trailed 4-3 and 8-4 in the third game but Venice again went on a run to build an 11 point lead. Brahman Coach Todd Jones said he felt the only way Okeechobee could compete was to be very offensive and take advantage of every opportunity they were given, "We had to go hard because you had to keep them on their toes. If you give them a free ball you're in trouble. Their quick offense was lethal." Okeechobee hardly had time to even think before the Indians would hit the ball as they dominated play at the net. Jones said the Indians were strong across the board and there was no player Okeechobee could take advantage of on the court. The Brahmans lose a number of seniors to graduation but Coach Jones said he is excited about the younger players in the system and expects the success of OHS volleyball to continue. Senior Katie Ward said the team tried their hardest and gave it all they had against a strong opponent, "They were good. The y knew where to hit the ball and aim. I'm sad my career is over but the season went well overall and I have a lot of good memories." In the other regional quarter nal Martin County outlasted Bradenton-Manatee in ve games. That set up a semi nal next Tuesda y in Stuart.
