MEMBER OF: Thoughts to ponder “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” Albert Einstein “If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.” Lao Tzu.Politics All over the news last week they were talking about Mitt Romney’s nances, and try as they may and dig as hard as they can, they cannot nd anything illegal in his dealings. Everything he did regarding setting up accounts in the Bahamas was legal and he disclosed his accounts and paid all of the taxes required by law. Maybe you don’t like the law that allows rich people to set up offshore accounts. If so, work to change it. But Romney did not do anything illegal. It’s like the media is mad at Romney for being rich and just trying to nd anything to use against him. Now I have read Romney’s plan for the economy and some parts are good and some parts I don’t agree with. And I am going to vote based on who I think has the best plan for the economy. But I am getting sick and tired of the way the media spends all this time on the candidates’ personal lives when I think most people want to know what they hope to do for the economy.Sex Education Why does it fall on the education system to teach our children about their bodies and sex? Parents you need to step up and take responsibility and start communicating with your children. Working and providing them with every material thing they want is not enough. If we don’t teach them the media, school, and peers will and what exactly are they teaching them? Use protection? Parents should teach this, not school systems. No school in this country can teach my son better than I can. Yes, there are fabulous schools and even greater teachers, but if I am not involved in his education he is missing out. Can someone explain to me what the abstinence program is? I have four kids two in junior high, one high school and one elementary. I have never heard of abstinence being taught. Is teaching nothing at all teaching abstinence? Maybe that is why it wasn’t effective. It is not the job of the schools to teach morality. That is the job of the parents. Schools are not allowed to teach religion and the morality issues regarding premarital sex have to do with religion. It is the job of the schools to teach biology, including human biology and reproduction is part of that. They should give the kids the facts including the facts on the high rates of birth control failure and the facts about sexually transmitted diseases. One of our own, Brenda Spence, in need of our help!We all know what a caring community Okeechobee is. Once, again, one of our own is in need of our help. Brenda Spence, a special server/waitress at Mom’s Kitchen suffered a heart attack on July 5. She was airlifted to Lawnwood Hospital in Ft. Pierce. After a couple procedures and a week over there, she is back home. She is unable to work until her doctor releases her, which hopefully will be in the near future A special account has been established in her name at Mid-Florida Credit Union to help with her expenses. Let’s rally around Brenda and show her how much we care! Brenda formerly waited tables at the Red Rooster. If any questions, call Reita Coots at 863-467-0381. Reita CootsChange party?Regarding an ad that appeared in the Wednesday July 4, newspaper. Property Appraiser Bill Sherman ha s asked Democratic, Independent, and those citizens with n o party af liation to change to the Republican Party on or be fore July 16. I have been a resident of Okeechobee Count y and a registered Democratic voter for the past 25 years an d seem to remember that Mr. Sherman was a lifelong Demo crat. Why does he want voters to change their party af lia tion and re-register as Republicans. Has he recently left th e Democratic Party and become a Republican himself? I a m confused and would appreciate some clari cation to thi s matter. Respectfully, Jeanine Gran Small business woes? President Obama “Made that happen”U.S. Representative Tom Rooney (R-FL)“I’m always struck by people who think, ‘Well, it must be because I was just so smart . It must be because I worked harder than everybody else’ . If you’ve got a business you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” – President Obama, July 13. Those comments were made by the same President who claimed that “the private sector is doing ne,” even as new business startups have plummeted to a 30-year low, and Americans have faced 41 consecutive months of unemployment above eight percent. The President’s insults are off-base. If you’ve built a successful business – a restaurant, construction rm, computer company out of your garage – you’ve worked hard and made smart decisions. You, not President Obama or the federal government, are responsible for that success. This President hasn’t helped you. He’s made things worse. His health care law, known as Obamacare, penalizes employers who cannot afford to purchase health insurance for their employees, even as businesses are struggling to remain open. Independent studies show that Obamacare will cause health insurance premiums to climb even higher. No wonder 77 percent of small business owners think the law will leave them with a higher tax burden, and 65 percent believe they’ll end up paying more for health care. Meanwhile, President Obama has again proposed tax increases that will hit nearly one million small businesses owners. As a result, small business optimism has dropped to a twoyear low, and fewer small businesses are planning to hire new workers. It could get worse. On January 1, our economy faces what’s known as a “ scal cliff,” when capital gains, estate and income taxes on all Americans will increase dramatically if Congress does not extend current rates. Economists agree this would lead to another recession. Shockingly, Democratic leaders in Washington say they would be willing to accept the recession and let everyone’s taxes go up unless the President’s demand for higher taxes on small businesses is met. That’s right – Washington Democrats are so insistent on raising taxes on small businesses that they’re willing to tan k our entire economy if they don’t get their wish. These threats won’t help Florida’s small businesses gro w or create new jobs. Businesses need stability in the tax code so they can plan for the future. Threatening to deliberately in ict a recession makes it impossible for them to expand and hire new workers. The key to our economic recovery isn’t bigger government, higher taxes and more spending. Seventy-eight percent o f small business owners say that federal taxation, regulation and legislation make it harder for them to hire more employees. Small businesses don’t succeed because of government interference – they succeed when the federal government gets out of their way. That’s why my jobs plan allows the private sector to grow and add new jobs in three key steps: Fix the broken tax code. Getting rid of loopholes and deductions and replacing them with permanent reductions in tax rates lets businesses compete on a level playing eld with a tax code that is fair, simple, competitive and stable. Get rid of unnecessary regulations that are costing us much-needed jobs. Complying with federal regulations costs our economy $1.75 trillion and nearly nine billion man-hours each year. Those resources should go to expanding those businesses and hiring new workers. Stop blocking American energy production. Producing more energy at home would improve our national security, create jobs right away in the energy sector, and relieve small businesses and families from the burden of high fuel costs. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the linchpin to our recovery. They deserve policies from Washington that will let them succeed and lead the way to prosperity. They should not be the subject of threats or derision from the President. President Obama deserves no credit for those small businesses that have managed to succeed under his failed policies – but he certainly shares the blame for many of the businesses that have failed and the jobs that have been lost. I am Doctor Ron Woody, physician at Okeechobee Regional Cancer Center. I am a native Floridian, born in Jacksonville Naval hospital and a graduate of both FSU University and University of Florida Medical School. (So no rivalry since Im a hybrid.) Im writing to tell you about state of the art cancer treatment located right here in Okeechobee and you will be treated here and not shipped to the coast (except for planning of your treatment) or anywhere else where you dont have the support of your family and friends. At the cancer center, we are capable of delivering Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. Now, you dont have to know the details, all you need to know is it allows us to concentrate the radiation where it is needed and even shape the area to conform to your anatomy, avoiding excessive radiation of normal, non-cancerous tissue. The treatments are painless and the only side effects are localized to the treatment area, unlike chemotherapy which affects the entire body and bone marrow. Recently, IMRT has been found to be superior to proton therapy in some tumors! Giving equal or better cure rates and less long term side effects! This was a relative surprise since the ONLY advantage of protons was supposed to be sparing of normal tissue. Whew! Thank God I dont have to go spend 125 million dollars! About the only thing superior about protons is the expense. It is a failure of our system to approve technology for use before it is proven to be effective. Okeechobee Cancer Center Offers State of the Art Cancer Treatment Locally If you are treated at Okeechobee Cancer Center, you will also have the advantage of your treatment being planned using the only PET/CT simulator on the Treasure Coast! This is one of the most important and useful technological advances in the staging of and treatment of cancer. A PET/CT is signi“ cantly more accurate because the CT portion cuts down on FALSE positive and negative interpretations. (Improves by as much as 15 to 30 percent or more.) So remember, if a PET is ordered, it is better done on a combination scanner for staging and treatment. The major advantage of using a PET / CT simulator is in showing more accurately the extent of the tumor. Since as a Radiation Oncologist my job is basically that of a target shooter, the PET keeps me from missing the target (cancer) by telling me to treat more o r most importantly allows me to treat less thereby reducing side effects! You only have access to this technology at Okeechobee Cancer Center. 9 Okeechobee News July 20, 2012

MurphyOkeechobee News For 10 hours each week, 67 children in Okeechobee practice their swim techniques for nearly four months of the year. The Okeechobee Shockwaves program has been around 25 years and each year has grown in membership. The program run by the Okeechobee County Parks and Recreation Department is for children ages 6-18 and the locals compete in the South Florida Recreational Swim League. They compete against big and small communities and have held their own this y ear against such teams as Boca Raton and Deer eld Beach. The program also had two local meets on July 9 and July 16. About 40 of the swimmers will compete Aug. 4 in the Championships in Coral Springs. Coach Laura Luschetta is a teacher at South Elementary and her teaching continues at the swimming pool. She has coached the Shockwaves for ve years. She said the alumni of the program do a good job of promoting the league to others and that is why the numbers continue to grow. "The kids have really done well this year. They have been amazing and have cut tons of seconds on their times at our meets," she explained. Each child learns all of the strokes used in swimming. The 8 and under practice for an hour daily and the older kids from 8 to 10 am Monday through Friday. The 8 and under swim 25 yard or one length of the pool. The 9-18 year olds compete for 50 yards or two lengths of the pool. More girls than boys compete for the team. The program is a feeder program for the Okeechobee High School team which has made great strides in recent years. The children pay a $60 fee to Okeechobee County and a $15 league fee to compete each year. The league website is SFRSL.org. Girls ready for upcoming National ChampionshipBy Brandi GomezSpecial to the Okeechobee News The Okeechobee County All-Stars 10 & Under Angels Girls Softball team traveled to Carabelle, (North Florida), 400 miles away to play in the state tournament against counties from all over Florida. The team played four games total with double elimination. The rst game on Saturday was played against Wesley Chapel, Fla. (they were state champions last year). Our winning score was 3-2. Our second game on Sunday was played against South Waltonour winning score was 14-0. Our third game was again against Wesley Chapel at 1:30 p.m. We lost. Our score was 11-4. Since it was double elimination we had only lost once, and Wesley Chapel had only lost once, we had to play them once more for the championship game just three hours later. Our last game was a victory winning score at 2-0. Our own Okeechobee girls softball team won the state championship and will now be heading to the World Series in Troy, Ala. from July 27-Aug. 1. In O.C.R.A.'s past records, the last time any team from O.C.R.A. has gone to the World Series was in 1993. This is such great opportunity for the girls and they are all very excited. However, they only have eight days to try and raise enough funds to cover their costs for hotels, gas, and food expenses. They will have a spaghetti dinner in the park in the middle of the town on Monday, July 23, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for $7 which will include spaghetti, salad, dessert and a roll. Delivery is available also. The team will also have a yard sale in the Okeechobee Livestock Market parking lot on Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Lastly, we are selling drawing tickets for a $400, brand new Lazy Boy Recliner at $10 each. The drawing will be Wednesday, July 25. If you have any questions or would like to donate or sponsor the team, please contact Brandi Gomez 863-634-5727. Please remember our girls are not only representing Okeechobee County, we are representing the state of Florida. Good Luck Ladies! The classified ads Sales Business Opportunities NOTICEIndependent Newspapers will never accept any advertisement that is illegal or considered fraudulent. In all cases of questionable value, such as promises of guaranteed income from work-athome programs if it sounds too good to be true, chances are that it is. If you have questions or doubts about any ad on these pages, we advise that before responding or sending money ahead of time, you check with the Better Business Bureau at 772-878-2010 for previous complaints. Some 800 and 900 telephone numbers may require an extra charge, as well as long distance toll costs. We will do our best to alert our reader of these charges in the ads, but occasionally we may not be aware of the charges. Therefore, if you call a number out of your area, use caution. No wonder newspaper readers are more popular! By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News Recommended foreclosure action by the Okeechobee City Council brought mixed reactions at the Tuesday, July 18, city council meeting. The council also acted on several budget related items. The code enforcement board had referred a code violation case to the council recommending foreclosure. Code enforcement of cer Fred Sterling informed the board that N & A Construction, the owner of property at 406 N.E. Fourth St, had been informed of the violation on Sept. 28, 2011, and had taken no action to clean up overgrowth on the property. According to code enforcement board policy, the case was referred to the city council for action because the ne has been accruing for over 90 days. "Honestly, I can't believe this is before us," said Councilman Dowling Watford. He said he went by the property several times a week and did not consider it an eyesore or a hazard. Councilman Clayton Williams expressed the opposite opinion. He felt the property owner was ignoring the system. "We have to have a remedy to bring him into compliance," Councilman Williams said. He noted that the properties on either side were well maintained. The vote to initiate foreclosure proceedings was 4 to 1 with Councilman Watford casting the lone dissenting vote. Turning to nancial matters, the council approved an assessment for residential solid waste collection of $224.64 per household. This is 1.4 percent higher than the current assessment and will go into effect with the new budget on Oct. 1. In another budget-related action the council set a tentative millage rate of 8.5907. Taking into consideration the 5.6 percent drop in city property values this year, the tentative millage rate will bring in $1.9 million in taxes as opposed to the $1.7 million generated by the current millage rate of 7.7432. Traditionally the council has set a higher tentative millage rate and then lowered it before nal approval of the budget. One mil equals one dollar for every one thousand dollars of assessed value. The council also scheduled a budget workshop for 5 p.m. on Aug. 28. The rst public hearing for adoption of the budget was set for 6 p.m. Sept. 4 with the nal public hearing on the budget to be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 25. Turning to other matters, the council suspended impact fees for another year. and adopted an ordinance that updates the wording in the city land development regulations to conform to current state law. The council also held the rst reading and set a date of Aug. 21, for the nal public hearing for an ordinance approving a non-exclusive natural gas pipeline franchise for Florida Public Utilities Company. Mayor James Kirk issued a proclamation announcing that two council seats will be on the ballot in the Nov. 6 election. Gary Ritter, director of South Florida Water Management District's (SFWMD) Okeechobee Service Center, appeared before the board urging water conservation. He said it is possible the locks on the northern end of the lake could be reopened in a few days if the lake level rises enough. He said some members of the public are confused as to why SFWMD is promoting water conservation while the U.S. Arm y Corps of Engineers is making pulse releases to the Caloosahatchee River. Mr. Ritter said those releases were necessary to maintain the proper salinit y level and they really did not amount to much water. He said the current pulse release is 650,000 gallons day. To put things in perspective, Mr. Ritter said that much water is lost from the surface of the lake each day due to evaporation. Also, he said that the Okeechobee Utility Authority uses up to 6 million gallons of water a day.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at www.newszap.com. City council foreclosure action produces 4-1 vote in the wrong direction," asserted Tom Rooney, the incumbent representing District 17 who is running for reelection. "More taxes isn't the answer. We don't have a revenue problem in Washington, we have a spending problem. The constitution was written to be a limiting document -not an entitlement document." The winner of the Republican primary for District 17 will face Democrat William Bronson in the general election. Former State Representative Randy Johnson, who is seeking the State Representative District 55 seat, said he was proud to be called the most conservative member of the Florida House. "Property taxes are something I want to take on," he said. Mr. Johnson said property taxes didn't go down as the assessed value of the property went down. It's important to send people to Tallahassee who share your value, Mr. Johnson told the crowd Cary Pigman, his opponent in the Republican primary, presented a list of his community involvements. He said he understood the concept of the politician-citizen, as one who serves his terms and then goes back to private life. "I am pro-life," he asserted. "Marriage is between a man and a woman and de ned by the Bible." Mr. Pigman said he would listen to the people and represent their interests. The winner of the contest between Mr. Johnson and Mr. Pigman will face Democrat Crystal Drake in the general election.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at www.newszap.com. Detective Javier Gonzalez, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Of ce (OCSO), stated in his arrest report that the burglary occurred on May 4. He then arrested Fernald on July 2 and Cook on July 16. Fernald was also arrested July 5 on an Okeechobee County warrant charging him with violation of the Widman Act. He is being held without bond on that charge. The Widman Act, named after Of cer Andrew Widman of the Fort Myers Police Department, was signed into law in May of 2011 by Governor Rick Scott. The act allows the court to hold a suspect in jail that has committed a crime while on probation or house arrest, rather than releasing them on bond prior to their probation violation hearing. Of cer Widman was killed July 18, 2008, while responding to a domestic violence call involving an offender who had an outstanding warrant. This law is intended to help avert such tragedies in the future by giving judges the ability to consider additional factors when determining whether to detain or release offenders who have violated community supervision prior to their hearings. On May 3, 2011, Fernald was placed on felony probation for a number offenses that include burglary while armed, grand theft (three counts), traf cking in stolen property (two counts), burglary of a dwelling and giving false information to a pawnbroker. According to the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC), Fernald committed all of those offenses in Hillsborough County. He was slated to be on probation until Sept. 6, 2016. Fernald and Cook are accused o f stealing a number of items from the victim's home. Those items include but aren't limited to a coin collection, a .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun, shing equipment, battery charger, jewelry and two generators. In all, stated Detective Gonzalez, the value of the items taken was estimated at $13,500. The detective said only a metal detector and some jewelry have been recovered so far. Future plans include a plastic surgeon available one day a month. Service is provided in a Christian atmosphere. The number to call for appointments is 863-357-3333. The hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are available outside normal business hours by request. The spa is having a grand opening Aug. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at www.newszap.com.
