By Eric KoppOkeechobee News Despite the protests and fears, Florida Power and Light is going ahead with its installation of the new digital smart meter on area homes and businesses. The new meter will replace analog meters and is part of the power provider’s investment into smart grid technology aimed at making their service more reliable and ef cient. The new digital meters also make it convenient for customers to go online and monitor their use of electricity. FPL started swapping out the meters in 2009 and, so far, have installed 3.4 million throughout Florida. According to FPL spokesperson Elaine Hinsdale the compan y began installing the new meters in Okeechobee in April and have completed 53 percent of the 22,617 to be installed locally. “Okeechobee will be fully activated by October,” she said in a phone interview Tuesday, June 19. “It takes about three months to install the meters and about another three months of testing.” While the new meters are expected to improve FPL’s service, they are also sparking some controversy. Opponents claim the meters are a health hazard due to the radio frequency emitted by the device; that they are a re hazard; By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News After considerable discussion at their Tuesday, June 19 meeting, the Okeechobee City Council voted to participate in the county’s S.W. 21st Street drainage project. The council voted to pay 50 percent of the match required under the grant up to a maximum of $95,000 without paying any change orders. Turning to other items, the council held the rst reading and set a date of July 17 for the nal public hearings on two ordinances. The rst ordinance extends the current one year moratorium on impact fees for another year from July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013. According to gures presented by city administrator Brian Whitehall, during the past year, i f impact fees had been in effect the city would have received $8,110 in impact fees from seven projects. During the past year the city collected $70,917 in impact fees for the county. The city received an administrative fee for collecting those impact fees. By Melissa YunasFlorida Forest Service As our area transitions into the wet season, the Florida Forest Service increases burning authorizations. There is a brief window in wet season that allow farmers, ranchers, sugarcane farmers and land mangers an opportunity to burn before burn restrictions (due to wild re activity) go into effect. Today the Florida Forest Service, Okeechobee District has authorized 37 authorizations for a total of 9454 acres, 110 piles. A few large authorizations that you should be aware of include: 1. Highlands County, Avon Park Bombing Range; 2. Indian River County, West Fellsmere, South Florida Water Management District; and, 3. Okeechobee County, Kissimmee Prairie State Preserve. The Florida Forest Service provides burn authorizations to land managers, ranchers and sugarcane farmers to burn for the several reasons. Rancher/dairy farmers use prescribed burning to increase the diversity and structure of vegetation to bene t wildlife and maintain livestock production. Ranchers burn during the cold months in order to prepare the land for grazing during the spring and summer months. Farmers burn between crops. Fire burns the stubble of the crop after it has been harvested. The re also enriches the soil and helps combat disease, insects and weeds. The ability of farmers to burn sugarcane is signi cant, burning before harvesting allows more ef cient sugarcane harvesting in the eld and improves sugar quality and recovery in the factory. (No sugarcane burning at this time, it will resume in October when the new cane is ready for harvesting.) Land clearing companies pile the dead vegetation and burn it instead of hauling it. Burning reduces the overall cost to the home builder. Land managers who manage large parcels of land for private landowners, or federal, state and local government agencies use prescribed re to manage their land. The re cleans the forest oor of leaf litter allowing new growth to sprout. (For example: water management, state parks, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and private hunt clubs or conservationists.) Citrus Growers pile burns for pruning and cleaning the orange groves. Burning, as opposed to hauling the debris to land ll, reduces the product cost to the consumer. There are Florida Statues and regulations for every category of burning. The Florida Forest Service is responsible to oversee that these re privileges are not impinging upon other's rights. If any of these res escape, the burner may be held liable for suppression costs and damage to the property of others. There is a certi ed burner program that gives authorizations to individuals who have been trained and certi ed in order that the y may be able to burn under more adverse weather conditions. Since January 2012, the Florida Forest Service, Okeechobee District Authorizations for burning: Martin County: 641 Authorizations, 21,314 acres, 1,877 piles; Saint Lucie County: 434 Authorizations, 4,049 acres, 1,181 piles; Indian River County: 412 Authorizations, 11,928 acres, 609 piles; Okeechobee County: 270 Authorizations, 23,827 acres, 487 piles; Highlands County: 1,042 Authorizations, 42,300 acres, 1,281 piles; and, Glades County: 615 Authorizations, 60,329 acres, 471 piles. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 In Memory OfThe passing of our dearest mother, grandmother and friendRegena Susan Long10/09/1957 05/28/2012A memorial is being held, and we would love for anyone who knew her to join us for this special event.Sunday, June 24th, 2012 2pm 4pm Please provide a covered dish and perhaps a memory to share Your presence would be greatly appreciated Movie Tickets: Adults $6.50 • Children 12 & under $5.00 Senior Citizens $5.00 all movies • Matinees $4.50Fri., June 22ND Thurs., June 28THFor Info, Call 763-7202 I: “BRAVE”Fri. 7:00 & 9:00, Sat., Sun., Tues., Wed. & Thurs. 2:00, 4:15, 7:00 & 9:00, Mon. 3:00 & 7:00 II: “ROCK OF AGES”Fri. 7:00 & 9:15, Sat., Sun., Tues., Wed. & Thurs. 2:00, 4:15, 7:00 & 9:15, Mon. 3:00 & 7:00 PG PG-13 PG III: “MADAGASCAR 3”Fri. 7:00 & 9:00, Sat., Sun., Tues., Wed. & Thurs. 2:00, 4:15, 7:00 & 9:00, Mon. 3:00 & 7:00 2 Okeechobee News June 22, 2012 Today: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Marco Rubio Marco Rubio’s parents came to this count ry legally, from Cuba. They are naturalized citiz ens. He was born in Miami. However, since his parents were not yet citizens when he was b orn, some people are saying he is not a “natural born” citizen and is not eligible to be vice president. But Obama’s father was a foreign national and he became president. So what exactly does the Constitution require? Here it is “No Person except a natural b orn Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, s hall be eligible to the Of ce of President; neit her shall any Person be eligible to that Of ce w ho shall not have attained to the Age of thirty ve Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident w ithin the United States.” Now, the problem is t hat the constitution DOES NOT de ne what a natural born citizen is. Of course lots of people w ant to supply their own de nitions or try to read the minds of our founding fathers based on letters or other documents, but the truth of t he matter is the constitution is not clear about w hat that means and the Supreme Court has ruled on the side of natural, being citizens s imply being born in the United States. From a Supreme Court decision: “Upon principle, t herefore, I can entertain no doubt, but that b y the law of the United States, every person b orn within the dominions and allegiance of t he United States, whatever the situation of his parents, is a natural born citizen. It is surprising that there has been no judicial decision upon this question.” The same people who s ay Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal are not eligible presidential candidates are using the nonnatural born argument to continue the birther argument against Obama. They’ve run out of ammunition in their previous arguments and have decided to use this one now ... unfortunately for Rubio and Jindal even though they’re c onservatives, their skin color and background isn’t the most popular with a lot of the birthers and they are incidental casualties in all this. The funny thing about this coming up now is that people want to ignore the fact that the father of our 21st President Chester Arthur was born in Ireland. What does the Constitution require? Apparently that you are not a conservative Republican. Looks like just because their president is suspect they are trying to stir the pot because they are scared of Rubio.Water storage In the article about the SFWMD meeting last week, board members discussed the problem of salinity in the Caloosahatchee River during the dry season. Even when Lake Okeechobee is low, they pump water out of the lake into the river in order to try to reduce the salinity problems. They mentioned they just don’t have enough water. Then they talked about backpumping water from south of the lake. This is crazy. The Everglades needs that water south of the lake. If they need more water to feed into the Caloosahatchee during the dry season, they need to store water north of the river. Years ago, the SFWMD purchased thousands of acres in Glades County for the purpose of water storage and then never bothered to store water on that land. They have the land in the right place to store water during the rainy season. They know they need to store the water. So why don’t they develop the water storage areas as they claimed they planned to do when they paid big bucks for that land? Instead of using it to store water, they leased it out for cattle grazing without even going out for bids.Fundraisers I have to say I am getting tired of the people in front of the stores begging for money for clubs and charities. How can you even tell if they are for real? Some of them just have handmade signs. And just because someone is wearing camo does not mean that he or she really is a veteran. Anyone can buy old military uniforms. I have a very limited income and I do donate to charity, but I try to be smart and use my donations where I think they will do the most good. I nd it tiresome to have people asking me for money every time I need to buy a gallon of milk. Thoughts to ponder People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used. Life always offers a second chance. It’s called tomorrow. “The most common way people give up power is by thinking they don’t have any,” Alice Walker. The Florida Division of Emergency Management urges residents and visitors in Central and South Florida to stay alert and use caution on area roadways as a storm system in the Gulf of Mexico brings the potential threat for heavy rainfall through early next week. “Abundant tropical moisture moving into the state may bring thunderstorms to much of Central and South Florida over the next several days and high rainfall totals could lead to ooding concerns,” said State Meteorologist Amy Godsey. “It is important that all Floridians heed warnings from the National Weather Service and local of cials, and remember to ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’ when approaching a ooded roadway.” Periods of heavy rains are expected through next Tuesday with projected rainfall totals of three to seven inches across a widespread area over the next ve days. Higher amounts may be experienced locally and could cause ooding concerns, especially in urban and low-lying areas. In addition, gusty winds and lightning strikes will be possible with any thunderstorms that develop. Residents should monitor forecasts and be alert for possible ooding conditions. Florida ooding facts: Flooding is one of Florida’s most frequent hazards. In 2009, ooding events caused approximately $87.5 million in damage in Florida. All three types of oods can occur in Florida: Areal oods occur with prolonged rainfall over several days, intense rainfall over a short period of time, or a river or stream over ows and oods the surrounding area. Areal oods are the most common type of ood and can cause considerable damage in urban areas. A ash ood occurs within six hours of a rain event, or following a sudden release of water held by a dam or levee. River ooding can be forecasted, but still can cause extensive damage. To avoid getting caught in a ood, follow these safety rules: NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio is one of the best ways to receive warnings from the National Weather Service. Monitor the NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite news source for vital weather-related information. If ooding occurs, get to higher ground. Get out of areas subject to ooding, including dips, low spots, canals, ditches, etc. Avoid areas already ooded, especially if the water is owing fast. Do not attempt to cross owing streams. Road beds may be washed out under ood waters. NEVER drive through ooded roadways. Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize ood dangers. Indian River State College has been rated as the fth most affordable college in the country and most affordable of Florida colleges according to the U.S. Department of Education's College Affordability and Transparency List released on June 14, 2012. The ranking was based on average net prices for colleges in the United States with undergraduate enrollment of 5,000 or more. "IRSC combines reasonable tuition with top-notch faculty and small classes to prov ide an exceptional educational value. Affordable higher education is the gateway to good career prospects for our residents and a skilled workforce for our community," said Dr. Edwin R. Massey, IRSC President. "Students often tell us that choosing IRSC was the best decision they ever made." Average net price for full-time freshmen at IRSC was $1,756 in the report for the 2009-2010 academic year. The net price is based on the average cost of attendance after nancial aid, grants and scholarships are subtracted. Tuition at IRSC equates to 40% less than Florida state universities and many thousands less than private career colleges and universities. The IRSC Financial Aid Department works closely with students to help them obtain all types of nancial aid, including grants and scholarships which do not require repayment. About 67 percent of IRSC freshmen typically receive nancial aid or scholarships, and over $40 million in nancial aid was awarded to IRSC students last year. Despite diminished state funding to education, IRSC has been able to hold down operational costs by implementing cost ef ciencies in energy usage and administration to ensure that funds are directed into the classroom to the greatest extent possible. According to the Florida College System, IRSC consistently ranks at or near number one in the state for the percentage of funds directed to instruction. Established in 1960, IRSC is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), with transferability of credits to universities for continued undergraduate and graduate level studies. Registration for the Fall Semester begins July 9 and classes begin August 23. Students are encouraged to apply for nancial aid and register now. IRSC offers over 150 programs, including Bachelor's Degrees, Associate in Arts degree programs for university transfer, Associate in Science degree programs for career training and Quick Job Training. Campuses are located in Fort Pierce, Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach and Okeechobee. For more information, call toll-free 1-866-792-4772 or visit www.irsc.edu. City Clerk Lain Gamiotea updated the council on items discussed at the Florida Association of City Clerks Summer Academy. The council learned that there are no major changes to the state elections laws that effect municipal elections and that the social media has the largest impact on how campaigns are managed. Councilmen received a summary of the proposed constitutional amendments for the 2012 General Elections. Councilmen learned that Mrs. Gamiotea was commended in a resolution of the Florid a Association of City Clerks for her outstanding leadership and commitment in chairing the 2011-2012 awards and scholarship committee. Mayor Pro Tempore Dowling Watford proclaimed the week of June 1824 to be "Amateur Radio Week" in the city. CITYContinued From Page 1 and, the meter could let hackers know if a home is occupied or not. Because of those perceptions, some county commissions in Florida have passed resolutions allowing citizens to opt out of having the new meters placed on their homes. As of May 1 Indian River, Volusia, Brevard and Charlotte counties have all passed anti-smart meter resolutions. Even Okeechobee County commissioners have considered that idea. "(But) I don't think they're going to do anything," said county administrator Robbie Chartier, who did some research on the matter for Commissioner Ray Domer. Instead, she added, local commissioners are going to pay close attention to a w orkshop held by the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC). PSC Media Director Cynthia Muir said the commission will hold a smart meter w orkshop in Tallahassee on Sept. 20 where customer comments and complaints will be considered. However, she added, the commission has no jurisdiction over the installment of the meters by FPL. "Our only jurisdiction is to make sure the meter is reliable and accurate," she said. Ms. Muir went on to say she last checked w ith the PSC's call center in April and they had received about 270 calls protesting the new meter. "But, I don't think they had any (calls) w ith speci cs," she added. When asked if any of the protest calls dealt with health problems allegedly caused by the radio transmissions of the new meter, Ms. Muir said smart meters have to meet Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements on radio frequency. She also pointed out that "the PSC does not have jurisdiction over health matters." Ms. Hinsdale said she has reports and expert testimony stating that the meters do not represent a health hazard to customers. "No health agency has documented any hazards to health," she said. "For 100 years w e've had radio waves in our lives. The frequencies of the meters are very low. The smart meter is off 99 percent of the time. And the 1 percent it is on is for no more than a minute or two a day." As for the new meter being a re hazard, Ms. Hinsdale said that simply isn't true. "The smart meter cannot combust, cannot ignite and cannot cause a re," she said. "When we have references to a re it's usually a faulty wire. We remind customers to have their wiring inspected on a regular basis -every 10 to 15 years. When a meter is swapped out, our installers do an inspection of the wiring coming into the home." It's also not true that the new meters can provide information on the home and its residents to the nefarious. It does not tell anyone the name, date of birth, Social Security number or number of people in the home. "None of that information is being transmitted," Ms. Hinsdale said. What the meter does say, she continued, is how much power is being used by the day, month and year. The customer can now go to wwwFPL.com and follow their use of electricity. By using the energy dashboard' customers can also get an estimate of their next bill and compare their energy use to previous billing periods. The new technology will also alert FPL if there is a problem with a transformer so that power can be rerouted. And although some counties have passed opt-out resolutions, Ms. Hinsdale said that has not stopped their installations. "That's not restricting anything we're doing right now. We're still moving forward in Brevard County," she pointed out. "The few who have resistance will be put on hold. When completed next summer, we will address those who resisted and see how best to meet their needs." Besides homes, Ms. Hinsdale said her company is installing about 350,000 smart meters for commercial and industrial customers throughout Florida. Florida faces nearly half the nation's risk from higher seas and coastal oods worsened by global warming -with 2.4 of the 4.9 million U.S. residents who live on land less than 4 feet above the local high-tide line living in the state. More people are at risk in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties than any state other than Louisiana and Florida itself. Lee and Pinellas Counties each face greater risk than all but ve coastal states. Fourteen of the nation's 20 most at-risk cities are in the Sunshine State, and more than half the residents of 107 Florida municipalities live on land below the 4-foot benchmark, a level that exposes them to much increased ooding risk from storm surge combined with sea level rise. These are among the ndings to be presented Thursday morning by Dr. Ben Strauss of Climate Central at "Risk and Response: Sea Level Rise Summit," a June 20-22 conference hosted by Florida Atlantic University's Florida Center for Environmental Studies, directed by Dr. Leonard Berry (press release). The purpose of the summit is to share the ongoing responses of agencies, institutions, and civic society to sea level rise and compare Florida with other vulnerable areas. "Florida is in the bull's-eye of sea level rise," Dr. Strauss said. "About half of America's population vulnerable to higher seas lives in Florida. Given its low-lying geography and frequent storms, Florida faces real risks of harm to people, homes, businesses and the state economy from oods enhanced by sea level rise, even over the next 20 years." Other speakers will highlight the state's leaky, Swiss cheese geology, a geology that means rising seas will increasingl y contaminate underground fresh water supplies, and sea walls will not effectively protect most communities. Dr. Strauss's ndings stem from his research with colleagues, which culminated in their recent "Surging Seas" report, the rst to analyze how sea level rise is compounding the risk from storm surges throughout the U.S., and to share local data in detail. "Many Florida counties face far more ris k from sea level rise and coastal ooding than entire coastal states," Dr. Strauss said. "To protect its coastal communities and statewide economy, Florida faces a heavy burden to prepare for the sea level rise that can no longer be avoided, and to help slow down rising waters by reducing heat-trapping pollution today." By Patty BrantSpecial to the Okeechobee News Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee River shing and boating have been a natural part of this area for longer than anyone can remember. In fact, it's a big draw for shermen from all over. So, it's a natural place for Storm High Performance Boats to nd a home. Owners Steve Ellyson and Sander Entus have done just that. Local shermen know about Storm boats custom bass and bay boats now manufactured right in Moore Haven. The company began in 1978 and moved to Fort Myers several years ago, That's where Mr. Ellyson said he really got involved in the business. He and Mr. Entus, both Storm boat "groupies," spent lots of their free time just hanging around the operation, soaking it all in. When they got a chance, they bought the business and moved it to Moore Haven. Mr. Ellyson brings to the operation some 14 years experience in custom berglass work and admits to being great at troubleshooting wiring problems. The company employs three full-time veteran boat manufacturing workers and will be looking for two part timers to do berglass work and general boat rigging. In addition to manufacturing custom boats, Storm also provides repairs on all makes and models of boats and has an awesome retail store packed with boating accessories like trailers, power poles, upholstery, custom lighting even apparel and tackle. By the way, they will also customize aluminum boats. Mr. Ellyson said their two-year goal is to expand the operation to include 22-24 foot bay boats, 18-18.5 foot bass and ats boats and airboats. He is proud that Storm provides handbuilt boats, one at a time, for each individual customer. They can modify the standard layout in any number of ways, all from scratch using raw materials. Storm is also working with a group to manufacture custom boats for veterans and other shermen who need wheelchairs, who have prosthetics or other special requirements. Boating is a way of life among the shing population around Lake Okeechobee, Mr. Ellyson commented. He said Storm Boats has a reputation among the locals and that's where he wants to be"back with the core boat owners." He also said Storm is planning to sponsor four tournaments per year: two open tournaments; one for Storm owners and their guests and a kids tournament. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 You are welcome to come visit and enjoy the traditional worship and music. That represents 13 percent of the state's fatalities for 2011. "Alcoholand drug-related boating accidents are preventable," said Capt. Tom Shipp, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Boating and W aterways Section. "Even one death is too many." That is why law enforcement agencies around the state and country are participating in "Operation Dry Water" this weekend. This nationwide public-education effort is designed to prevent alcohol-related accidents and fatalities. FWC of cers, along with local law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard, will crack down on boating under the in uence (BUI) violations. "While our of cers always look for BUIs," Capt. Shipp said, "this weekend, they are making a special effort to stop this dangerous activity." 2009 was the inaugural year for this effort, and the program's effectiveness made repeating it worthwhile. Law enforcement agencies in all 50 states and several U.S. territories typically participate, interacting with tens of thousands of boaters throughout the weekend each year and taking hundreds of impaired operators off the water before they could kill or injure themselves or someone else. "We know that increased of cer effort reduces boating accidents and saves lives. Saving lives is what Operation Dry Water' is really all about," Capt. Shipp said. The FWC reminds boaters to be careful this weekend. Boaters who have had too much to drink or who are impaired by drugs are a great danger to the boating public. "Being under the in uence of alcohol or drugs impairs a boat operator's vision and reaction time," Capt. Shipp said. "Sun, wind, fatigue and other conditions can intensify the effects alcohol or drugs have on a boater." Intoxicated boaters are also susceptible to injuries or falling overboard because of impaired coordination and balance. The FWC reminds boaters that they are responsible for making decisions that keep themselves and others safe. For more information, please visit: www. operationdrywater.org or MyFWC.com/ Boating. Okeechobee 9 Okeechobee News June 22, 2012 Learn what you can do to help the birds and the bees (the bats, butter ies and beetles too!)As part of National Pollinator Week, from J une 18-24, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serv ice and its partners will host public events across the country designed to highlight the crucial importance of pollinators like bats, birds, bees, butter ies, and other insects to wildlife, plants and people. Most of all, Pollinator Week seeks to draw attention to the fact that some pollinator species are in trouble and need our help. "Without pollinators, life on Earth would be scarcely recognizable. We depend on these amazing insects and animals for the clothes we wear, the houses we live in and the food we eat," said Fish and Wildlife Serv ice Director Dan Ashe. "Every American should be concerned about alarming declines in our nation's pollinators, but fortunately everyone can pitch in to help them." Pollinators are essential to agriculture and forestry, pollinating more than 150 different kinds of fruits, vegetables and nuts that provide a third of the nation's food and beverages. In the United States alone, pollinators enable people to produce about $20 billion worth of products every year. In addition, more than 75 percent of owering plants are animal pollinated. These plants provide habitat, food, and shelter for many species of wildlife. Most plants need pollinators to reproduce, and use nectar to attract them. Animals visit owers in search of food and sometimes even mates, shelter and nest-building materials. Some animals, such as many bees, intentionally collect pollen, while others, such as many butter ies and birds, move pollen incidentally because the pollen sticks on their body while they are collecting nectar from the owers. All of these animals are considered pollinators. A study of the status of pollinators in North America by the National Academy of Sciences found that populations of honey bees (which are not native to North America) and some wild pollinators are declining. Declines in pollinators may be a result of habitat loss and degradation, and disease (introduced parasites and pathogens). The celebration of National Pollinator Week began in 2007 with Senate Resolution 580 and a proclamation from the Secretary of Agriculture. This recognition has grown each year since, with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and a majority of the nation's governors joining Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack in issuing their own proclamations this year. The Service and its partners will celebrate National Pollinator Week with educational awareness events and conservation projects. To nd a Pollinator Week Event near you, visit: http://pollinator.org/npw_events.htm You can help pollinators by: Reducing your impact. Reduce your pesticide use, increase green spaces, and reduce your carbon footprint. Pollution and climate change affect pollinators, too! Planting for pollinators. Educate your neighbors, schools, and community groups about the importance of pollinators. Host a dinner, a pollinated food cook-off or other event and invite your friends. By Dr. Ron Woody Okeechobee Cancer CenterHello! I am Doctor Ron Woody, physician at Okeechobee Regional Cancer Center. I am a native Floridian, born in Jacksonville Naval hospital and a graduate of both FSU University and University of Florida Medical School. (So no rivalry since Im a hybrid.) Im writing to tell you about state of the art cancer treatment located right here in Okeechobee and you will be treated here and not shipped to the coast (except for planning of your treatment) or anywhere else where you dont have the support of your family and friends. At the cancer center, we are capable of delivering Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. Now, you dont have to know the details, all you need to know is it allows us to concentrate the radiation where it is needed and even shape the area to conform to your anatomy, avoiding excessive radiation of normal, noncancerous tissue. The treatments are painless and the only side effects are localized to the treatment area, unlike chemotherapy which affects the entire body and bone marrow. Recently, IMRT has been found to be superior to proton therapy in some tumors! Giving equal or better cure rates and less long term side effects! This was a relative surprise since the ONLY advantage of protons was supposed to be sparing of normal tissue. Whew! Thank God I dont have to go spend 125 million dollars! About the only thing superior about protons is the expense. It is a failure of our system to approve technology for use before it is proven to be effective. If you are treated at Okeechobee Cancer Center, you will also have the advantage of your treatment being planned using the only PET/ CT simulator on the Treasure Coast! This is one of the most important and useful technological advances in the staging of and treatment of cancer. A PET/CT is signi“ cantly more accurate because the CT portion cuts down on FALSE positive and negative interpretations. (Improves by as much as 15 to 30 percent or more.) So remember, if a PET is ordered, it is better done on a combination scanner for staging and treatment. The major advantage of using a PET/ CT simulator is in showing more accurately the extent of the tumor. Since as a Radiation Oncologist my job is basically that of a target shooter, the PET keeps me from missing the target (cancer) by telling me to treat more or most importantly allows me to treat less thereby reducing side effects! You only have access to this technology at Okeechobee Cancer Center. Babies born between 37 and 42 completed weeks of pregnancy are called full term. Babies born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy are called premature. In the United States, about 12.8 percent of babies (more than half a million a year) are born prematurely. More than 70 percent of premature babies are born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation, called late-preterm births. Late-preterm babies account for most of the increase in the premature birth rate in this country. About 25 percent of premature births are caused by early induction of labor or c-section due to pregnancy complications or health problems in the mother or the fetus. In many of these cases, early deliver y is probably the safest approach for mother and baby. However, the March of Dimes is concerned that some early deliveries may occur without good medical justi cation or may be done at the request of the mother. In some cases, this can lead to late-preterm birth, with potential risks to the baby. Women should wait until at least 39 weeks to schedule an induced labor or a c-section, unless there are medical problems that make it necessary to deliver earlier. At least 39 weeks of pregnancy gives babies all the time they need to grow before they are born. Consider the following: A baby's brain at 35 weeks weighs onl y two-thirds of what it will weigh at 39 to 40 weeks. During this time, your baby's brain adds connections needed for balance, coordination, learning, and social functioning. Babies born early can have feeding problems and breathing problems. Babies born early are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. This mission is achieved through programs of community service, education, research, and advocacy. Anyone needing more information about prematurity and other pregnancy issues, or anyone interested in being a part of the March of Dimes' major fundraiser, March for Babies, should call Laura McCall at 863-763-3131 or Cindy at 772-562-0115, or visit www.marchofdimes. com. Healthy babies are well worth the wait Okeechobee NewsGigglesWhile most cattle egrets spend their days in cattle pastures and eat insects, this one has developed a fondness for french fries. The bird, nicknamed “Giggles” by restaurant staff is known to perch near the drive-in at the MacDonald’s Restaurant on U.S. Highway 441 S., hoping customers might share their food.

By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News The state’s largest recycler is on track to open a facility in Okeechobee in late summer. That was con rmed recently by Trademark Metal Recycling of cial John Bianculli. According to Mr. Bianculli, the Okeechobee facility will receive what is called “ uff” the st-sized nished product from shredding automobiles at some of Trademark’s other facilities around the state. The 60,000 square foot state of the art facility under construction at the Okeechobee land ll on N.W. 128th Avenue will extract the last bit of usable metal from the uff before it goes to the land ll. No recyclable material will be bought at the Okeechobee facility. Mr. Bianculli said that at rst the Okeechobee facility will employ about 15 people. However, he hopes to eventually employ about 30 people around the clock. He said there are three things that will determine the speed of growth of the new facility: the general economy, market conditions and availability. Trademark has 22 locations through Florida including four in the Orlando area and three in the West Palm Beach area. They buy, sell and process automobiles, aluminum, copper, steel/cast iron, stainless steel, high temperature alloys, appliances, sheet iron, industrial discards and all grades of ferrous and nonferrous metals. Trademark has mobile crushing crews throughout Florida. They offer mobile baling of light material, industrial demolition services, plant cleanup, container and rolloff boxes, land ll services, radio dispatched trucking, certi ed/computerized scale transactions and secondary aluminum melting. The mosquito population grows in the summer w hich coincides with the time of year many residents and visitors are outdoors enjoying Florida’s natural landscape. Floridians can take simple steps to combat mosquitoes and prevent mosquito-borne illness. “Mosquito populations are likely to increase after recent rains,” said State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Carina Blackmore. “It’s important that Floridians and visitors are informed that the risk of mosquitoborne disease is minimized by implementing precautions.” DOH encourages three basic precautions to help limit mosquito bites and exposure to mosquito-borne illness: DRAIN any standing water to stop mosquitoes from multiplying. COVER skin with clothing or repellent. COVER doors and windows with screens to keep mosquitoes out of your residence. If outdoors at dusk or dawn, be cautious as mosquitoes are most active during these times. Floridians who are traveling internationally need to remember to use mosquito repellent to avoid mosquito bites, as communicable diseases often return to the United States after traveling abroad. DOH continues to conduct statewide surveillance for mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus, malaria and dengue. Symptoms of mosquito-borne illnesses may include headache, fever, fatigue, dizziness, weakness and confusion. It can take two to 14 days to become sick after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Anyone suspecting they are sick should contact their physician immediately. For more information on mosquitoborne illnesses, visit DOH’s Environmental Health Website.
