Numerous parents and local businesses worked together to raise the money needed for the trip so that all of the band members could attend and share in this monumental experience. “It was a very good trip. MEMBER OF: Now that’s a good neighbor In the Wednesday Okeechobee News story about the attempted murder, I want to express my admiration for the neighbor w ho helped the victim. A screaming, bloodcovered woman arrived on the neighbor’s doorstep. The neighbor called 9-1-1, did w hat she could to take care of the woman’s w ounds, and then went to check on the victim’s children. When she saw a man coming at her carrying a knife, the neighbor grabbed a sword and threatened him, making him back off. Now I was a little surprised w hen I read that she grabbed a sword she had by the door. Maybe there is a little more to this woman’s background than we might guess if she keeps a sword handy! But what a brave woman she is, that she would think rst of the safety of those children, knowing the man had a knife and that he had already used it on one person. Maybe she’s a ninja? Perhaps someone in the home was a collector and kept them displayed on a wall or something. I know my son use to collect Medieval Times swords and displayed them on the wall. De nitely this woman was brave and a good neighbor and she deserves kudos for this.Dead voters In regard to the recent stories about all of the dead people who are still on the voter registration lists in Florida, I have this mental image of zombies lining up at the polls on election day.Tax loophole We are losing $4 billion a year due to the additional child tax credit loophole which is exploited by fraudulent income tax claims by undocumented workers who claim the exemption for children who have never even lived in this country. Considering the de cit, I would think it would be priorit y for Congress to close such loopholes in the tax code! I totally believe that the government somehow bene ets more from them being here .. even though we loose in excess o f $4 billion per year, they are somehow/somewhere gaining more than they are “losing.” They would never admit that .. but it must be true or they would make it a priority to get it stopped. Just one year of recovery alone would get the de cit out of the red. But there is an underlying reason as to why they don’t, and it’s not an innocent reason I’m sure. Speak Out/Public Forum Special to the Okeechobee NewsThe Okeechobee High School Brahmans Band expressed their thanks to the Okeechobee community for all of the donations that made their trip to Washington D.C. possible so they could march and play in the National Memorial Day Parade.

Ninth Street. According to the report led by a member of the task force, a strong smell of marijuana was coming from the residence when task force members entered the dwelling. Of cers found a mason jars containing 9.2 grams of marijuana and 3.9 grams of marijuana, another package containing 2.9 grams of marijuana, two digital scales, a food processor containing marijuana residue, glass bongs containing marijuana, an ashtray containing cigar ller and plastic sandwich bags, a loaded .22 ri e, cigarette wrapping papers, cans with false bottoms and a plastic bag containing marijuana stems. According to the report, Ryan Jaynes stated he had lived in the residence for three or four months. According to the report, he stated he did not sell marijuana but did ask his friends to “pitch in” to cover the cost of the marijuana they smoked at the residence. Allan Case told of cers he had lived at the residence for three or four months, the report continues. He also stated he asked friends to help with the cost of marijuana. According to the report, he stated he paid $100 for a quarter ounce of marijuana and asked friends to chip in $10 for half a gram. Both Jaynes and Case claimed they did not bene t nancially from the marijuana paid for by their friends. Two other men stated they did not live at the residence and were only visiting. One of them told of cers he purchased half a gram to an eighth of an ounce of marijuana from Case and Jaynes. “He advised he paid $10 for a half gram and $50 for the eighth of an ounce,” the report states. Allan D. Case, 22, also known as “Doctor Addict” was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell. He was also charged with misdemenaor counts of possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $7,000. Ryan Jaynes, 22, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell. He was also charged with misdemenaor counts of possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $7,000. The other two men were only charged with misdemeanors. One was charged with possesion of marijuana less than 20 grams. His bond was set at $1,000. The other man was charged with possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and possesion of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $2,000.Doing the mathA quarter ounce equals 7 grams. The report indicated that $10 was allegedly “pitched in” for each one-half gram. Thus, one quarter ounce would yield 14 half gram portions. If 14 “friends” each gave $10 for a half gram of marijuana, that would be $140 total collected for the .25 ounce. However, one of the men stated he reportedly paid $50 for one-eighth ounce of marijuana. At that rate, the .25 ounce would only bring $100. Assistant State Attorney Ashley Albright said that while he cannot comment on this particular case, in general under the law, it doesn’t matter if someone who is accused of selling drugs makes a pro t or not. “The statute actually says ‘sale or delivery’ of drugs,” he explained. “It doesn’t require that money exchanges hands.” Four face drug charges TALLAHASSEE–The Florida Highway Patrol this week announced the preliminary enforcement results from the Patrol’s Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks campaign. During three enforcement periods between February and May, troopers were on the lookout for car and truck drivers who committed violations attributed to aggressive driving, such as speeding, following too closely and changing lanes improperly. The efforts focused on motorists’ driving behavior around large trucks in an effort to reduce the number of commercial vehicle related crashes. Troopers issued more than 4,900 citations during the campaign; more than 2,000 citations were for violations associated with aggressive driving. In addition to targeted enforcement, the campaign used billboard and radio messaging to increase awareness among car and truck drivers of safe driving behaviors around one another and of the heightened risk of receiving a ticket for a violation. FHP collaborated with the Florida Trucking Association to conduct activities at schools and community centers around the state to educate drivers on how to share the road safely with trucks. “The Florida Highway Patrol is committed to keeping our roadways safe for all motorists, and we were pleased to partner with the Florida Trucking Association on this safety campaign,” said FHP Director Col. David Brierton. “Whether you are driving a commercial motor vehicle or a passenger car, it is a driver’s responsibility to drive with care.” The members of the Florida Highway Patrol remind everyone that in order to keep you and your family safe when driving around large trucks, you should be extra cautious. Sharing the road with larger vehicles can be dangerous if you are not aware of their limitations. They drove 18 hours to Washington, and 18 hours back. Twelve of the band members got to play taps during the middle of the parade for a crowd of veterans. Afterward, many of the v eterans came up to the band members to get their photos taken with them and thank them for their support and salute. "The crowd response was amazing. I felt like they did well and we made Okeechobee proud. We really showed off our patriotism," he added. The band did plenty of sight-seeing on the trip. They visited the National Mall and numerous monuments, three museums, spent several hours at Arlington Cemetery and visited the Pentagon, the Air Force Memorial and other sites around Washington. They were also treated to a concert by Trace Adkins and Daughtry on Sunday night on the lawn of the Capital. The National Symphony Orchestra also performed. Radio surgery is a technique that utilizes specialized machines that allow large amounts of radiation to be delivered with sub millimeter accuracy thereby killing the cancers without damaging surrounding normal tissues. It is as simple as going out to get a chest x-ray! Cyberknife Robotic Radio surgery system, created at Stanford University over 10 years ago is unique and better than other systems in the fact that it is the only Radio surgery system that can achieve what is called real-time tracking and killing of tumor.Ž What kind of patients can be helped by Cyberknife? There are several situations too numerous to mention here where Cyberknife would be extremely useful and safe. The following are just a few of them: Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia, pituitary tumors and tumors of the acoustic nerve called Acoustic Neuroma can avoid major surgical procedures on the brain by getting treated with Cyberknife. Patients with cancers of the brain, spine, lung and prostate are but a few of the cancers that can be helped with one to “ ve sessions of Radio Surgery. An article that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010 showed that patients with patients with lung cancer who received Radiosurgery had a survival rate of 55.8% at 3 years versus 20 to 35% for those patients treated with traditional radiation over several weeks. As one of our patients commented, if it is good for patients at Stanford University, it is good for patients from the Okeechobee area! Shelby Kirton, a home schooled student, took third with a speech titled "She is more than a pretty face." Merydian Causier of Osceola Middle School took honorable mention with a speech about peer pressure. About 125 people, most of them parents, grandparents, and siblings of the speakers were on hand for the annual event. The participants all won their home school competition before the county-wide contest. They received ribbons and certi cates for winning their classroom, and medallions for winning their school competition. They took home plaques for the county victory and rst place winners take home scholarships to camp this summer. Organizer Debbie Clements said the judges had a very dif cult time because all of the speakers were excellent this year. Pat McCoy served as mistress of ceremonies. Students compete in Tropicana Speech By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News There is an organization in Okeechobee that helps community members by giving other community members a chance to volunteer their time and money. Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian group dedicated to building affordable housing for low income families, using volunteer labor. Through the years Habitat for Humanity in Okeechobee has built seven houses and they are in the process of remodeling their second house. Last year Habitat volunteers rehabilitated a house that had been storm damaged and vandalized. They are currently painting an existing house inside and out and putting a fence around it. However their main purpose is building new houses. According to board member and volunteer Shirley Matson, the Habitat houses are not free. However they are very reasonable. The recipient needs to have enough income to make payments on a small, no interest mortgage and pay insurance and taxes. Recipients of a Habitat house are also required to put 400 hours of "sweat equity" into the construction of their house. Friends and family members can help toward the total hours required. Okeechobee Habitat relies heavily on grants. Currently there is no grant money available, so they are not taking applications for homes at this time. Ms. Matson said Habitat was waiting to see what happens after July 1, which is the beginning of the scal year for many government agencies that award grants. For the current project people are needed to help with painting. On new house construction, because of Florida building codes, Habitat must hire licensed plumbers and electricians. All the rest of the labor is done by volunteers, mostly carpenters. Ms. Matson said the local Habitat could also use cash donations if anyone is so inclined. She said that if someone donates to Habitat for Humanity International, that money does not go to Okeechobee unless the donation is speci cally designated for that purpose. If a person wants to volunteer labor or money to the Okeechobee Habitat, Ms. Matson recommends they call the Okeechobee Habitat of ce at 863-357-1371. The of ce is not always open but the caller can leave a message and will be contacted in a few days. The local Habitat also has a Restore at the Trading Post Flea Market where they sell anything anyone wants to donate, with the exception of clothing. They do not have room for clothing. All pro ts go toward Habitat projects. The Restore is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. High school students can earn community service hours either by working on a Habitat house or by working at the Restore. Habitat for Humanity helps community

The National Anthem opened the day with Bridget Jiminez giving a memorable rendition, followed by the Invocation given by Father Lorenzo Gonzalez, Introduction of Guests by Monica Clark, including county commissioners,; Edward B. Dominado, President of the Philippine-American Cultural Foundation of South Florida; and a welcome address by Sister Elinor Sevigny, SNJM. The weather was ne, the musical entertainment provided by the Escorpion Group (Nick Garcia and family), brought joy and fun to all. The clown and magician shows kept the younger children very attentive, and musical chairs brought laughter to all. Master of Ceremonies Dionicio Toledo kept the entertainment moving in the big tent. Regino Garcia and members of the Juan XXIII group, provided 15 pinatas for the children, and kept the youngsters going until all 15 were broken, and the candy eaten! Many other activities were also being enjoyed by others including: a bounce house, large slides, soccer and volleyball games. The winners of each team were awarded trophies. Many vendors provided a variety of foods, and other vendors sold, or displayed, various types o f items. More than 1,000 people were present for the day. The souvenir booklet to take home had many ads by local supporters and donors, and information for the community was also included. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) of cers Felix Collazo, J eff Babauta and Jared Cloud each received a bullet-resistant vest Wednesday. However, they aren't going to be the ones wearing them. These vests were actually designed for their K-9 partners Jasmine, Mack and Gus, and donated by the Retired Law Enforcement Association of Southwest Florida. "K-9s are often the rst ones into a dangerous situation," said Ray Hubbert, president of the nonpro t organization. "We believe all K-9 of cers and their dogs should be protected." Hubbert's group raises money to support law enforcement agencies in Southwest Florida and has already provided vests for 16 other local police K-9s. Collazo, one of two FWC K-9 trainers, was instrumental in building a relationship between the association and the FWC. "We respect our partner agencies' roles working traditional crimes on the streets," Collazo said. "With that in mind, we waited until their K-9s were equipped before accepting our vests." The vests are manufactured and distributed by Point Blank Enterprises Inc., a Florida company, and will be used during particularly high-risk situations, like felony manhunts. "These are working dogs," said Capt. Carol Keyser, statewide coordinator for the FWC's K-9 program. "They are one of the tools that support our of cers. They are valuable members of our agency and an important part of their handlers' lives. We will do whatever we can to ensure our K-9s are safe and healthy." The vests will do just that. Designed to be bulletand stab-resistant, they will protect the dogs during the dangerous situations they are likely to encounter. For example, FWC K-9s have been involved in several searches for people suspected of shooting law enforcement of cers. "In addition to tracking, FWC K-9s are trained in detection," Collazo said. They can sniff out hidden evidence like weapons, ammunition and sh and wildlife. "We are grateful to Mr. Hubbert and his organization for such a generous donation," Keyser said. "And we look forward to working with the Retired Law Enforcement Association of Southwest Florida in the future."
