the former substitute school teacher from

Because of the murder conviction, the
only sentence available to Brown is life. He
has been housed in the Franklin Correc-

A video presented at the first trial by Mr.

Teen Dance
*I would like to comment about the
Teen Dance incident. My son attended the
dance and had a great time despite of what
happened. I believe that this is a problem we
are faced with now with our youth, no mat-
ter where the kids are, even at school there
is always one bad apple in the crowd. As
parents we have to educate our children and
trust they will make the right decisions. My
son couldn't believe that this person would
have the nerve to bring drugs to an event
especially with uniformed officers on the
premises. I think the dance is well managed
and Teresa Chandler has put a lot of effort in
making this a safe and secure place for the
kids to gather. Thank you Teresa for your ef-
forts. Instead of criticizing, let's see what we
can do as a community to help make this
event continue. Thank you.

City elections
*They haven't had a changing of the
guards on the city council for many years. I
think it is time to inject some new bodies not
only to break up a monopoly but it may gen-
erate a different attitude among the mem-
bers. Those that have had business before
the council understand, those that haven't
should attend some of their meetings. It
would be good to have a larger number of
candidates but it's a very limited number of
persons than can actually run. Many don't
know that just because one owns property,
a business, etc in the city, does not mean
that person can run for office. Not only can
you not run but you can not vote either. This
is a protection instilled in their charter that
allows what some call "outsiders" from hav-
ing a influence in their affairs.
*Only legal residents of the city can vote
inheity elect ohs t d of cou ec only tose
city office. So it does limit both the poll of
candidates and the number of voters.

*In the city election have three incum-
bents, Williams, Markham, and Watford. We
have one challenger, who is Devin Maxwell.
Idid find out something interesting over
the k ncdnd prain nhi eto votes for ci

the nod for city council. But, if there is one
person you REALLY want in there, vote for
that person and that person only! You have
the option to vote for three, but that gives a
vote to each of those guys. It doesn't benefit
that specific individual
*All I will say is that I would like to see
some new blood in City Council.
*The seats for City Council are nonpar-
tisan, so they are free from party affiliation.
I guess this could be a good thing or bad
thing, depending on how you view it.

County budget
*Here's just a small example of mis-
management and unwise spending. Take a
look at the old HRS office, which also has
the Health Department. Look what they did
to make the middle room the "temporary"
county commission meeting room while
they re-did the courthouse. EXPENSE. They
moved everyone out of the old courthouse
and why don't you check out what else they
modified in the HRS building... new walls,
etc. to pretty it up, instead of making do,
while they waited for the courthouse to get
done.
*I am disappointed that the community
has not come together on this, and made
it VERY CLEAR that we as citizens will not
accept any more budget cuts in the law en-
forcement department.
*From what I can tell from the num-
bers that were in the paper, we don't have
enough deputies as it is. We need to add
more, not cut deputies.

School sportS
*It's a hot Friday afternoon. In the high
school parking lot sit three school busses.
Two are air conditioned and one is not. The
football team loads up in the two air condi-
tioned busses and the girls volleyball team
loads up in the one without air condition-
ing. All are traveling to West Palm Beach
for a game. The volleyball coach had been
told that an air conditioned bus could not
be pulled off a route for the volleyball team.
That sounds like a Title IX violation to me.
What say you?

Car burglaries
*I am really surprised that after every-
thing that has been in the paper over the
pstuyear about cat burbjlarie rn ao yo
you should never leave your car unlocked,
people still leave money, purses, computers,
ipods, etc. in their unlocked vehicles in plain
view. Wake up people. Don't leave your
valuables in the car and lock the car doors.
*I feel sorry for the parents whose chil-
dren's personal information and Social Se-
curity numbers were on a document that is
now lost because a school employee left it
in a bag in her car and the bag was stolen.
Surely the school employees who have doc-
uments with sensitive information should
take better care to ensure those documents
are secure. Now the parents have to deal
with notifying the Social Security Adminis-
tration, credit bureaus, etc., in an effort to
prevent identity theft. What a mess
*I hope the judge throws the book at
the juveniles who were stealing from cars
in their neighborhood. And he should make
them pay back the victims. Maybe they can
do yard work or something to make it up to
the people they stole from. They need to be
taught a lesson that crime does not pay.

Scholarships
*I have to agree with the person who
wrote the letter to the editor about the local
scholarships. They say they try to spread the
local scholarships out so as many students
as possible get some help. But when you go
to the scholarship awards night, you hear
the same names called over and over. Cer-
tainly all of the students who receive schol-
arships are deserving. But there are also a
lot of deserving students who do not receive
any local scholarship money.
*In regard to the student rankings and
the scholarships, if I had a lot of money
I would try to help the "C" students who
come from middle class families. Their
grades are not high enough to get the Bright
Futures scholarship money from the state.
Their parents don't make enough money
to pay for college but are not poor enough
to qualify them for federal grants. Yet those
kids need college just as much -- or maybe
more than -- the A students. So if I win the
lottery, I would establish an "average kids"
scholarship.

The detective's arrest report stated that
after a birthday party for Austin, he and

Okeechobee High School's Volleyball
Team improved to (8-1) with an impressive
victory over the Treasure Coast Lady Titans
at home on Tuesday night, 25-9, 25-16, and
25-14.
It was a strong effort for the girls as they
excelled in all areas including passing, net
play, and serves. LeAnna Cotton led the
way with 17 assists. Rebekah Bryan also fin-
ished strong with three aces and five kills.
Paige McCrary had four kills at the net for
Okeechobee.
Treasure Coast fell to (2-3).
Brahman Coach Todd Jones said he
played his primary starters in the first game
and then substituted freely in the second and
third games, "We played a lot of reserves.
The games were fun for them as they nor-
mally don't have the luxury of playing. They
enjoyed it."
Jones said he hopes to schedule tougher
opponents next year perhaps even some
state ranked teams and certainly teams that
are ranked in this region.
"The Treasure Coast coach apologized
after the game and said she was sorry she
wasted our time and that her team had never
o dye sthis porlShre wa definitely disap-
Jones said last week was a challenge
for Okeechobee as they played two of the
tougher teams in the area, Jensen Beach,
and John Carroll. He said the loss to Jensen

was a disappointment especially when the
defeated John Carroll and the Lady Rams
defeated Jensen in another tournament.
"It was frustrating to leave so many
points in that game and fall short at the end.
The girls really got mad Monday when they
found out John Carroll had beaten Jensen.
That kind of fired them up," he added.
The winning continued Wednesday night
as the Okeechobee Lady Brahman volleyball
team spanked Glades Day, 25-13, 25-19, and
25-15 to improve to (9-1) on the year.
Coach Jones said his team got great all
around play from all of their starters and
reserves in the match at OkeechobeeHigh
School.
Sarah Davis had 12 assists and four ser-
vice aces. Maranda Serrano had six blocks
and seven kills at the net for Okeechobee.
Again Okeechobee substituted liberally
in the game to get some experience for the
younger players.
Okeechobee jumped out to comfort-
able leads in both the first and third games.
The second game was close until the final
points.
Okeechobee will host Boynton Beach
next Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The junior
varsity contest begins at 5:30 p.m. They play
in a tournament at Palm Beach Lakes High
School next weekend.

Datron Smith scored on a 10 yard run in

Okeechobee also recovered four Eagle

off a pass in overtime to seal the victory.
"I just felt so happy (about the intercep-

Tillman led an inspired defensive effort
with eight tackles including one for loss. Ja-

stretch with a sack and a tackle for loss as
the Eagles threatened to score.
Leon also had a fumble recovery and a
sack in the game. He also grabbed a 37 yard

Waldau's Junior Golf raises funds for scholarships

Lef t rghtar Crisia Dyle ZchrySpecialto the Okeechobe News/ridgtt Waldau

OHS golf volunteer Danny Busbin, and Hannah Boswell.

Nineteen years ago, after retiring from the
City of Hialeah Fire Department and mov-
ing to Okeechobee with his wife, Bridgette,
Jim Waldau hosted a golf tournament at the
Okeechobee Golf and Country Club for his
firefighter friends. The event drew such a
crowd and was so popular that the couple
hosted a tournament again the next year.
Realizing that they had an event on their
hands with the potential to help a worthy
cause, Jim met with former Okeechobee
Golf and Country Club pro J.R. Coburn, who
informed Jim that Junior Golf might be a
good choice as a beneficiary because there
was no Junior Golf program in the vicinity.
Looks like he was correct.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, the 19th annual
Waldau's Junior Golf Tournament to Benefit
Junior Golf will be held at the club. Bridgette
said they are expecting 32 foursomes to play,
for a total of 128 golfers.
"This is a very significant tournament
for us each year because this is where the
bulk of our money is raised to provide col-
lege scholarships for local boys and girls on
the Okeechobee High School golf teams,"
Bridgette said. "Last year we gave out seven
scholarships of $400 each, and we've given
at least $500 annually to the Okeechobee
High School golf team.
"Raising money over the past couple of
years has been challenging due to the poor
economy, but this tournament has enabled
us to keep the scholarships going."

"They not only share their knowledge as
they give of their time, but they also serve as
role models to the young kids.
"Teaching golf pros will come to our
camps, which are for those 8 to 13 years
of age. We just held our fourth Junior Golf
Championship in June, which is free to all
kids in Okeechobee County, and we'll be
having our second Junior/Adult Tournament
in December."
Jim said he is a firm believer in the life
lessons one can learn from golf.
"When we work with kids, we motivate
them to be honest in sport and in everyday
life," he said. It's not all about golf, it's ab out
teaching them about life."
Bridgette said that the most rewarding
part of helping to run Waldau's Junior Golf is
seeing the success that the high school golf
teams have enjoyed.
"I understand that 15 girls tried out for
the Okeechobee High School golf team this
year, and in the past they have sometimes
not had enough girls to form a team," she
said. "A number of the boys and girls on the
high school team came through our Junior
Golf program. I would have never dreamed
that this program would grow to be what it
is today."
Those interested in learning more about
Waldau's Junior Golf, Inc., may visit www.
floridajuniorgolf.org/waldau.

Of course, there's much more to Wal-
dau's Junior Golf than the annual tourna-
ment. The organization puts on annual Ju-
nior Golf clinics each year, an annual Junior
Golf Championship and a Junior/Adult Tour-
nament -all in conjunction with Okeecho-

bee Golf and Country Club -plus camps at
the course and at Lake Okeechobee Resort
KOA Golf Course.
"Our clinics start at age 8, and we always
have some of the high school golfers come
over and help teach the kids," Bridgette said.

A woman was arrested
on several felony charges
after she allegedly picked &
up a fraudulent prescription
at a local pharmacy.
Edwina Gay Caniza- g
res, 44, S.W. Eighth St., Edwina Gay

Tuesday, Sept. 21, on felony
charges of obtaining a prescription by fraud,
possession of a controlled substance (xanax
Img), possession of a controlled substance
(xanax 2mg) and possession of a controlled
substance (zolpiden). She was also arrested
on a misdemeanor charge of possession of
marijuana under 20 grams. Canizares was
booked into the Okeechobee County Jail un-
der a bond of $20,500.
An arrest report by a detective with the
Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force stated that
a woman called the pharmacy and identi-

fied herself as Sabrina from the emergency
room of Raulerson Hospital. She allegedly
told the pharmacist that she was calling for
an emergency room doctor and then placed
an order for the prescriptions. The pharmacist
became suspicious and called the emergency
room. Hospital personnel said they had no
employees named Sabrina and that the doc-
tor named had not authorized the scripts. The
pharmacist then called the detective. Around
1:30 p.m. Canizares reportedly entered the
phamacy to pick up her prescriptions. The
detective, along with a second Task Force de-
tective, were in the pharmacy and watched
the alleged transaction. They then followed
the woman outside where they stopped her.
One of the detectives asked for, and received,
permission to search her Chevrolet pickup
truck while the other detective asked for, and
received, permission to search her purse. Ac-
ccording to the detective's report, what ap-
peared to be a partially smoked cigarette field
tested positive for marijuana.

place. "We created the problem
by violating our own policy and
allowing permits to be issued "
stated Cornrissioner Clif Betts.
Mr. Royce replied that at one
time the only requirement for a
building permit was legal access
to the property.
"We have a legal and moral
obligation to hel 3 these peo I ,"
stated Cornrissioner Betts. Mr.
Fairtrace claimed that at one
time the county maintained the
road, but he could find no re-
cords of such maintenance. He
was in favor of the county fixing
the road and then letting the res-
idents maintain it. The vote on
the special assessment was 3-2
with cornrissioners Betts and
Noel Chandler voting against it.
While this solves the irnre-
diately problem it does nothing
for the other many miles of such
roads throughout the county.
In other action, the board:

county,
recognized Efrain A onte,

Okeechobee County Corniis-
SiODeTS Unanillously approved
a $89.7 million budget. Sheriff
Paul May has said he will appeal
to the governor. The approved
budget contains $15.1 million
for the sheriff's office. Sheriff
May has stated that he cannot

tilar $16.6 Inillion.
The budget contains $10.7

$25 million for public safety, $3.4

$9.2 million for transportation,

as many coincide with county
holidays.
Turning to fees, cornrission-
ers increased cemetery fees in
order to make the county's cen-
eteries self-sufficient. The charge
for a cernetery site increased
from $650 to $800 and the per
petual care fee increased from
$100 to $400. Facilities manage-
inent director Rony Ard said this
would put the county in the up-
per range of ees in cornpanison
wit surroun ing cern enies,
but would not be the highest
fees. He said if the rates were
too high, it would drive people
away.
As a contrast, the board ap-
proved a reduction in rates for
C. Scott Dniver Park proposed by
theTTourist Dveloprrent Cou

the per-day charge for use of the
paVilion decreased from $150 to
$50. The daily rate for the entire
facility went from $500 to $400.
Since C. Scott Driver is under
utilized, it is hoped these rate
decreases will encourage fishing
tournaments that are now utiliz-

Once again the issue of sub-

According to planning official
Bill Royce there are sorne dedi-
cated rights of way under the
county's jurisdiction but they are
not maintained by the country.
Such a road is S.E. 34th Avenue,
Which is in a platted subdivision
but it is not a county maintained
right of way. The county no lon-
ger accepts unpaved nights of
Way for maintenance.
In 2004 an ordinance was
passed stating that, with a few
exceptions, the county will not

Unpaved roads. At the Aug. 26
COTHIission meeting Steve Fair-
trace, who lives on S.E. 34th
Avenue, addressed the cornris-
sion about putting shellrock on
the road. Staff was directed to re-
SarTCh the options. Mr. Fairtrace
appeared before the board again
at the Sept. 23 Ineting. Mr. Royce
llSted the options available to the
board. After Inuch discussion
the board voted to do improve-
Illnts on the road and levy a
special assessment on residents
Who live along the road to pay
tor the work.
At the recornrendation of
county attorney John Cassels the
board also agreed to make any
emergency repairs on the road
necessary for public safety until

Okeechobee News

There are approximately 100 children in
Okeechobee who are victims of abuse, ne-
glect or abandonment, and are served by
the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program. They
may be living in foster care or staying with
relatives who have agreed to take them in,
Many of these children don't know what it's
like to start school even with the basics they
have absolutely nothing: No new notebook
to take notes in; no backpack; no loose leaf
paper; no pencils or pens.
Guardians for New Futures (GFNF) is
dedicated to providing the children sup-
ported by the GAL program with good
quality school supplies each year by hold-
ing the Kits4Kids School Supply Drive. This
drive provides children with a good quality

back pack and fresh new school supplies.
This year GFNF was able to outfit all 100
children from Okeechobee with new kits.
These kits were distributed at the Okeecho-
bee Courthouse by GAL caseworkers and
the children were well pleased. Many gen-
erous community businesses and organiza-
tions were happy to participate in the drive,
such as Liberty Medial Supply and the Pan
American Roundtable. These organizations
as well as many private donors enable dis-
advantaged children to begin the school
year on the same footing as other children.

program or find out how you can help visit
