The note said, in part: "People are watching me. If I don't
execute their plan they will kill my children. Please don't call
the police. I need all unmarked bills. God
bless you. Thank you."
When the Bank of America teller re-
ceived that robbery note Tuesday after-
noon, she remained calm and contacted
her manager. The woman standing in
front of her, Paula Rene Spigelmoyer, then
reportedly said that three Hispanic males
were holding her children hostage and
Paula Rene they wanted money. However, the robbery
Spigelmoyer note did not indicate how much money.
As it turned out Spigelmoyer's children
were fine and were, in fact, at school.
After learning the children were all right and there
were no men waiting for Spigelmoyer outside the bank,

Fixing the county bdet
*Charging for use of th alfield lights
is just a token gesture from people that re-
ally don't know what to do, and it wouldn't
amount to a puff of smoke in a wind storm
even if they did charge for it. These guys
have got to face the reality of the situation.
They arestgung to have to all let goof some
of teir saf now it' a hard ting to d
and I don'twant anyone to lose their job, but
the facts are the tax payers are being pushed
to the limit of increases in their tax, no mat-
ter what tax it is, they have been raised and
raised and raised until it just has to stop.

JROTC
uni cre again tat te parade theaRO

has, ssome ei nt hea rea umd itory n
the school not afford enough hats for every-
one?
*I don't think there were enough "cov-
ers" to go around. I heard some of them say-
ing something about not having one big or
small enough to fit them. I do have to say
that I've never been so proud in my whole
life as I was when I saw my daughter in her
uniform and "marching" with her fellow
cadets. I will agree they were very disorga-
nized. However, I can't and won't blame the
kids for this. For quite a few of them, this
was their first time even marching. From
what I was told they haven't even practiced
marching in formation.
*I don't think anyone blames the cadets
for the problems. It is not their fault they are
given uniforms that do not fit, or if they are
not given a complete uniform. The school
program should pay more attention so the
kids can look good and be proud of their ap-
pearance.

Speakout
*Obama and his two recent anti-gun
appointments to the Supreme Court need

to heed JFK's words: "Those who make
peaceful revolution impossible will make
violent revolution inevitable."

Renting
*Rent in Okeechobee is outrageous.
Seems like the landlords in Okeechobee
think there is a abundance of wonderful
high paying jobs here. Look at the rent in the
surrounding areas-they are a lot cheaper.
Lower the rents and you might get tenants
that can work their minimum wage jobs and
be the best tenants you have ever had.
*After the Hurricanes a few years back,
rent seemed to sky rocket. It is still too ex-
pensive for most working people here in
Okeechobee. Combine that with no jobs
to be found and layoffs and cut backs it just
gets worse. I am noticing that rent is going
down based on the ads in the newspaper,
but it simply isn't going down enough.
*Many property owners are in a diffi-
cult position. Quite often, it is not "greed"
that drives up the rent prices. They need to
charge enough rent to at least break even,
that means covering the mortgage, taxes,
maintenance and repair costs. Depending
on when they purchased the rental prop-
erty, the mortgage may be pretty high. And
they pay full taxes--no homestead exemp-
tions on rentals. For a family situation where
you do have a steady job, it might be worth
your while to look at buying a small home.
Start with something you can pay the mort-
gage on, even if it is not as big a home as
you think you need. Build up some equity
and then you can trade up when things im-
prove. Most people used to manage in much
smaller homes.

Agri-Civic Center
*One of the candidates commented that
the Agri-Civic Center is a big improvement
over the old ag barn. Is that what they built it
for? To replace the old ag barn that was used
one week a year for the livestock show? Was
this community put millions of dollars in
debt just so the livestock show could have a
nicer facility for one week a year? It certainly
wasn't built for concerts-no one brings a
concert to a hot oven of a barn like that. It
wasn't built for the rodeos--when built it
only had half as many seats as the old rodeo
arena. The county commissioners who were
on the board at the time need to explain just
why they built that money pit.

Lesson from the past
It has been said that if you don't learn
your lesson from the past, you are bound
to repeat it. I would like to ask the voters to
remember a few years back in our recent
history when you wrote letters to this news-
paper complaining about the persons then
serving as County Commissioners and the
methods they were using in the manage-
ment of county tax payers funds.
How many times I read your comments
about how dissatisfied you were and how
it was about time to throw the rascals out.
Well, in the following years, you did just that
and replaced most of them during the voting
process. Now after a few years, memories
seem to be fading. It looks like a return visit
for another bite out of the apple is starting to
take shape. How good is your memory? Do
you remember back then and what you did
to solve the problem? Don't go back to the
"Good ol' days," and the old way of doing
things. The fact is the good old days weren't
all that good.
Why do Okeechobee County Commis-
sioners continually go outside the County
to hire contractors and advisors to perform
work in Okeechobee County? Any new com-
missioners should look into any projects to
be awarded and double check to see if any
qualified, competent contractors or work-
men are available locally before hiring out-
side the county.

t0 Our opinionS
Well, here's mine even though you didn't
ask for it. It seems to me that there is a little
confusion about what to do to cut the bud-
get.
First BIG mistake is taking funding from
our Sheriff. Have you ever thought about
what would happen if this community lost
it's power of enforcement? Crime WILL'
not might, will run rampant. Sheriff May
has done an excellent job of keeping crime
under control by the power invested in him
by the government. And what is the govern-
ment? It is the people. He has spent relent-
less hours keeping crime under control.
He has made it his personal responsibil-
ity to see to it that the people of Okeecho-
bee can sleep at night. I know he can't be

everywhere and he doesn't see everything,
but when he gets wind of something, he's
right on top of it. He has top notch men and
women working under him who are as ded-
icated as he is.
All of them put their lives on the line ev-
eryday for you and your families, including
you, Mr. Bonner, Mr. Betts, Mr. Chandler and
Ms. Helton. How do think their families feel
when they do their jobs to protect your lives
at the risk of their own? Who you gonna call
when trouble comes your way? You guys
have bitten at the chomp one too many
times.
My opinion is to get rid of those four and
use the money that goes in their pockets to
support our local Sheriff and the great posse
he has. They at least prove their worth!
Put Joey Hoover in the driver's seat and
keep Ray Domer and add Gene Woods and
bring back Mr. Long and we'll have a fine
group of County Commissioners that will
serve the people and do what's good for the
community.
Second big mistake was in proving to us
how petty and greedy you are by trying to
collect a few measly dollars because you
chose to run around wasting your gas and
eating where you wanted instead of what
was convenient. Those moves were your
choices and we should not have to pay for
your enjoyment.
I have not been able to work for over two
years-my husband took a pay cut to keep
his job, no overtime, no gas mileage. God
supplies our every need. We trust in Him ev-
ery month to make our money be enough
to pay our mortgage and bills and buy food
and He always does! And we always have a
little left over to help someone in need.
So, before you find yourself looking for
work elsewhere, my opinion is you should
have a good look at your own finances and
see where you can shorten your pockets.
But before you do that, get on your knees
and ask God what He wants you to do. He
has all the answers. Praise Him and thank
Him for your life and all you have...and just
for the record, nothing you have is yours,
everything belongs to God and He entrusts
us with it to use wisely and to take care of.
Count your blessings.
Jesus loves you and so do I,
Cheryl Gawda

county had mandatory county-wide pickup)
the county had to spend additional money
for the road department and inmate crews
to pick up trash on road rights of way.
Both assessments passed unanimously.
The EMS assessment sparked a little discus-
sion.
Because the EMS assessment was cut in
half this fiscal year, rates were doubled for
the coming budget year. The assessment on
residential property increased from $37 per
residential unit to $74. Hotel/motel/RV park
rates increased from $1 per room/space to
$2. The rate for commercial and industrial
property also doubled.
The on the EMS assessment was 4 to 1
with Commissioner Joey Hoover casting the
lone dissenting vote.
"It's hard for me to swallow," Commis-
sioner Hoover said of the rate schedule for
commercial buildings. "Is it the size of struc-
ture or the type of business?" he asked. "I
think it puts a burden on commercial prop-
erties that is not fair." Turning to other mat-
ters, the board approved rezoning a parcel of
land on U.S. 441 N. at N.W. 20th Lane from
commercial and residential single family to
heavy commercial in order to accommodate
a medical clinic.
The board also approved payment of
$10,986.22 for emergency repair of the air-
port generator.
A public hearing was scheduled for Oct.

14 to consider abandoning all unbuilt pub-
lic rights-of-way in Basswood north of U.S.
98 with the exception of the unbuilt right
of way adjacent to N.W 176th Avenue. An-
other public hearing was scheduled for that
same date to consider abandoning an alley
running south from S.W 8th Street and east
of S.W 20th Avenue.
At the request of PNC Bank commission-
er subord nattd a deferred pyet oan

der for the bank to proceed with a new loan
modification on a state housing initiative
partnership program (SHIP) loan to avoid
foreclosure.
.After some discussion of the cost of pro-
viding EMS service to Buckhead Ridge and
other parts of Glades County, the consen-
sus of the commission was to offer Glades
County a two-year contract with the option
to adjust prices at the end of the first year.
Under the proposal Okeechobee County
Fire/Rescue would bill the insurance com-
pany of patients in those these areas and
Glades County would pay $88,665 to cover
the difference not paid by insurance. The
proposal will be presented to Glade County
for approval.
Commissioner Hoover suggested sched-
uling a workshop with Waste Management
concerning the 100 acres that Waste Man-
agement is contractually bound to present
to the county. County Administrator Lyndon
Bonner said he was discussing some dates
with Waste Management officials for a work-
shop on that topic as well the host fee agree-
ment, recycling and other issues.

surveillance camera does not back up her
story," said the OCPD investigator. "Surveil-
lance cameras did not pick up any black
pickup truck in the parking lot."
The detective went on to say that
Spigelmoyer was likely not thinking clearly
Tuesday afternoon.
"She'd been hurt, was out of work and I
think she got desperate. She also appeared
to be under the influence of something "
said Detective Taylor, who added that the
woman was also very paranoid
Officer Reyna's arrest report indicated that
surveillance cameras showed Spigelmoyer
entering the bank's parking lot, located at
207 N. Parrott Ave., at 2:32 p.m., cameras
show the woman entering the bank. The
alarm sounded around 2:44 p.m.
Detective Taylor stated in the report that
she recovered multiple text messages from
Spigelmoyer's cell phone that indicated a
conversation between her and her mother.
In some of those text messages Spigelmoyer
asked her mother if she could borrow her
car because "... she might have to go away
for a while," stated the report.
In a 12:28 p.m. text, Spigelmoyer report-
edly told her mother that her kids were in
danger and that she had to get dressed.
Officer Reyna's report goes on to indicate
that Spigelmoyer will appear in circuit court
on Oct. 13 at 9 a.m.

Okeechobee City Police Department (OCPD)
Officer Belen Reyna placed the woman un-

"Both children were fine," said OCPD
Detective Bettye Taylor. "We verified that as
soon as the call came in."
Spigelmoyer was arrested Sept. 7 on a
felony charge of robbery with no weapon or
firearm. She was booked into the Okeecho-
bee County Jail under a bond of $5,000. Jail
records indicate she was released on bond
Wednesday afternoon.
Officer Reyna's arrest report stated that
the woman claimed the men were in the
bank's parking lot with her children. She
said the men were in a black pickup truck
but she could not tell the officer the make or
model of truck, his report continued.
According to the report, she told the teller
to wait four hours before calling the police
and that she was to meet the men holding
her children at the first exit off the Florida
Turnpike. Spigelmoyer never threatened
the teller and was unarmed, stated Officer
Reyna.
Detective Taylor said there was no truck.

Folks Are Cashing in on the Current
~/I Gold and Silver Rush
In today's economy, with real estate val-
~ll()c~ ues in the gutter and the value of a dollar
being so hard to come by, people are
e~L~~A ~ U searching dresser drawers, jewelry boxes,
lock boxes, attics and even garages for
forgotten, never-used jewelry, silver sets,
even dental gold.
People are coming in droves to the
Treasure Traders clutching boxes over-
flowing with school rings, broken jewelry,
vintage watches, not to mention silver
coins that they've had laying around for
years. With gold and silver trading at near
40 year highs, ordinary folks are reaping
the benefits of the gold and silver fever
that is running rampant.
Whether you have a few pieces of gold,
a collection of sterling silver or coins, you
should visit the Treasure Traders buying
event. It's fun, informative and could put
money in your pocket.

The Treasure Traders Buying
Show, a Central Florida vintage
collectibles company, is in
Okeechobee at the Holiday Inn
Express on US HWY 441 to
make offers for purchase on your
gold and sterling silver jewelry
and flatware, unmatched and bro-
ken jewehry, old watches, pocket
watches, sports memorabilia, his-
torical relics, old musical instru-
ments such as guitars and man-
dolins, old advertising signs, old
silver money and tintype pictures.
These are a few of the hun-
dreds of items that they will
make you an offer on. The
Treasure Traders will find a new
home for your old stuff and you'll
make money in the process.
The fast-paced and ever-
changing collectibles market is

alive and well for the right
items. The Treasure Traders has
direct connections to collectors
nationwide as well as knowl-
edge of what collectors are pay-
ing and will make you a cash
offer on the spot.
U.S. coins pre-1965 are very
sought after by collectors right
now due to their 90% silver con-
tent and bring top dollar in
today's market. Some coins have
even more value due to certain
characteristics. Our experts can
evaluate them and offer the best
prices due to our contacts in the
marketplace. Because gold is at
an all-time high, gold coins of all
types are bringing the highest
prices ever and people are choos-
ing to cash them in while the
market is still at the top.

All it takes to participate in
this event is to bring in anything

this year," he added.
Turner said the team is much further

during the 2009 season. He said their next
meet against Lake Placid will be more of an
indication on where the team is and where
they need to be.

the run game and force the Red Devils

something they want to major in. They will

Throughout much of the country, golf
courses will be seeing their final rounds of
the season over the next month or two. But
at the Okeechobee Golf and Country Club,
the fun is just beginning when the leaves
turn brown elsewhere.
"That's when we're the busiest...when
other parts of the country are experiencing
cold weather," said Saba Curren, 70, who
prefers the title "trustee" over "owner" of
the course. "We love to see the winter busi-
ness, but there is something we love even
more, and that's to see families and young
people come out and play golf.
"I'm 70 years old and I love the older
people who have played golf here for many
years, but we're very focused on young
people. Children have always played for
free here with a paying adult, and we like
to provide a challenging course for the kids
from Okeechobee High School, who have
been playing here since the course opened
in 1965."
Located 10 miles north of Okeechobee,

the course is open year 'round, closing only
for one-half day on Christmas. The 18-hole
course consists of the original nine holes
featuring magnificent trees and the newer
and wide-open back nine.
"I've had people from out of town come
here and tell me that they prefer the back
nine," Curren said. "I've wondered why, be-
cause the front nine has such beautiful trees
and so much character. But they tell me that
they enjoy the wide-open spaces because
they will see hawks and deer and cows and
donkeys while they play. That's the 'scenery'
that they enjoy."
The non-profit course is home to ap-
proximately 300 links members and 60 an-
nual members. Men's and women's golf as-
sociations utilize the course, and a weekly
scramble is conducted involving nine holes
of golf and dinner.
Terry Lanman is the golf pro for the par-
72, 6,887-yard course, designed by Mark Ma-
hannah. The course, set in a peaceful, rural
atmosphere, is home to a variety of tour-

naments throughout the year. A first-time
County Championship will be held Oct. 16-
17 at the Okeechobee Golf & Country Club,
where men's, ladies and junior champion-
ships will be awarded.

their home schedule with an impressive win
over Fort Pierce Westwood, 25-12, 25-12,
and 25-11 on Tuesday.
Okeechobee jumped out to early leads in
all three games and were never really threat-
ened by an athletic Westwood squad.
Okeechobee got several good serves
from Sarah Davis as they won the first game.
Jones had two service aces in succession
late in the game.
Okeechobee led 9-1 in the second game
and Kati Ward had several tough serves in
the easy Okeechobee win.
The solid service game continued in the
final game as Okeechobee took a 12-5 lead
and cruised to victory.
Coach Todd Jones said Westwood had
two girls with excellent athletic ability. He
said at times they created some problems
for his team. "They have the athletic abil-
ity but their volleyball skills aren't there yet.
They made a couple of impressive plays.
Jones said he was pleased with the ser-
vice game of the Lady Brahmans. He also
praised the passers for making good scoring
opportunities for the team. "I thought our
sets were on task. Some of our secondary
setters also did a good job. They were im-
pressive."
McCrary said Westwood provided some
competition at the net at times. She said she
hit around a couple of their girls who had
excellent leaping ability.
"It was a pretty fun match. I'm glad we
won. I've trained and practiced a lot to im-

prove around the net," she added.
McCrary said the team really gets along
very well and works hard to improve. "We
all get along fine. It's not like last year when
there was a lot of drama on the team. Ev-
erybody likes each other and we work well
together."
The varsity travels to Bartow for a tourna-
ment this Saturday. The Junior Varsity squad
defeated Westwood 25-2, and 25-3.
The JV also did well at a tournament in
Palm Beach County this past weekend. They
defeated Jupiter, Wellington and Royal Palm
Beach in matches played Saturday. The JV is
(5-2) on the season.

By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
Don't do any repair work, even if it's on
your own house, without checking with the
building department to see if a permit is re-
quired. That's the lesson that was learned
from the Tuesday, Sept. 7, meeting of the
Okeechobee County Construction Industry
Licte somo d scussion, the board charged
Kevin Evans $750 -- $250 for each of the three
provisions of the county code they claim he
violated: advertising himself as a contractor
when he did not have a contractor's license,
violating building codes and failing to obtain
the necessary permits.

Annual Halloween

Celebration planned
Okeechobee Main Street in conjunction
with the Okeechoee County Sheriffs Depart-
ment, The City Police Department and the
Board of County Commissioners will be
having the annual Halloween Celebration "a
safe alternative to door to door trick or treat-
ing" on Sunday, Oct. 31 from 5:30-8 p.m. at
the Agri-Civic Center on Hwy 710.
There will be haunted trails, costume
contest, activities, games, prizes and lots of
candy. You can become a part of this safe
alternative to door to door trick or treating
by setting up an activity booth and giving out
candy and prizes to the children. A trophy
will be awarded to the best dressed booth.
Email okms~ mainstreetokeechob ee.com
or come by 111 Northeast 2nd Street for a
booth participation form. Your participa-
tion will allow you to hand out information
flyers and brochures about your business or
group. For more information call Okeecho-
bee Main Streets Executive Director Toni
Doyle at 863-357-6246. All businesses, clubs,
organizations and church groups are en-
couraged to join us. Donations of candy and
prizes are greatly appreciated.

Upcoming Okeechobee
blood drives announced

number of donors has. Only 5 percent of

Mr. Evans. "Everybody has to have a per-
mit."
The only other item on the agenda was
withdrawn by the building department.
Monica Law, doing business as Jim Law
Landstyling, had been charged with doing
contractor work without a license, not dis-
playing license numbers on permit applica-
tions and advertisements, violating building
codes and not obtaining the proper permits.
The building department has the option of
taking this case to the court system.

As the result of an investigation building
official Tim English stated that Mr. Evans had
done work including framing walls, flooring,
plumbing, installation of a kitchen sink, elec-
trical wiring, deck construction and window
installation. Since Mr. Evans was working on
his own dwelling, he was not required to
have a contractor's license. However, build-
ing permits were still required. Mr. English
said that Mr. Evans had magnetic signs on
his car advertising himself as a handyman
even though he holds no license as a con-
tractor.
"This would be no problem if you had
gotten a permit," Chairman Tony Stark told

Special guests
On Wednesday, Sept. 1, Mike Costopoulos, local CPA and CFP with Costo-
poulos and Helton PA, visited the Academy of Finance Financial Planning
class. Students were able to interview Mr. Costopoulos to discover the re-
sponsibilities, skills needed, educational requirements, and general working
environment of a certified financial planner. The class is working on produc-
ing end of the semester financial plans for themselves. One of their first as-
signments was to produce a "job description" for a certified financial plan-
ner. "The students worked diligently in preparing for Mr. Costopoulos and
they were rewarded for their efforts with a very informative and personable
session" stated Mr. Roehm. "Mike is always very accommodating as a guest
speaker and interacts very well with the students."
