miles south to Tampa Bay where he attend-
ed a Buccaneers training camp.
"But I saw I wasn't cut out for the NFL,"
he said.
So, he headed back to Tallahassee where
he earned his master's degree in sports man-
agement. While attending graduate school
he interned with the Tallahassee Thunder of
the Arena Football League.
"I did some on-the-field work and it
piqued my interest in coaching," recalled
the 33-year-old Jackson.
He returned to OHS to intern under then-
head football coach Cary McKee and helped
with spring practice. From there he took a
long drive to Storrs, Conn., where he was a
graduate assistant at the University of Con-
necticut and worked with tight ends and
special teams.
After a year there, Jackson took his first
full-time coaching gig at Western Caro-
lina University in Cullowhee, N.C. Jackson
coached in the Catamounts program and
wore the purple and gold for six seasons. He

then went to Greensboro, N.C., where he
worked in the North Carolina A&T program.
After a season in Greensboro, Jackson was
offered, and accepted, the job at OHS.
"I've got it-now what am I going to do
with it?" he said with a chuckle.
At this early point in his head coach-
ing career, Jackson said he wasn't sure yet
what kind of offense or defense he'll employ
when the '09 season gets under way with
the Kick-off Classic against Fort Pierce Cen-
tral on Aug. 28.
"I haven't got that far yet," he said. "I'm
not sure what specific offense or defense
we'll run. It's all on the ground floor right
now."
Jackson said he's been exposed to a
number of offenses including the I forma-
tion, the spread and zone running schemes.
"I'll formulate a plan that best fits our
players," he said. "I'll keep it as easy as pos-
sible. I'm trying to outsmart the opposing
coach, not our players."
That statement sounds as if he's fol-
lowing some sage advice given him by his
dad. George Jackson, a former football and
track coach, has been with the Okeechobee
County school system since 1969.
"I told him to feel it. Don't make any rash

decisions," said the elder Jackson. "Don't
push it, don't rush it."
The longtime teacher and administrator
said even though he feels good that his son
and his family are in Okeechobee, he feels
better about what Myron brings with him.
"We feel like he'll be an asset," said
George. "With his experience, he can show
these kids what to expect once they get up
to the next level. It makes us feel good that
he's here but, more than that, it's what he
can add to the community."
Because Myron's worked in the Arena
League and colleges like UConn, George
said his son knows what to teach the kids
and what to expect.
"He's a chip off the old block," said
George with a hearty laugh. "He's just a little
bit tougher than I am. He's tough."
And while the son is now known as
Coach Jackson, he briefly sheds that tough
football coach exterior to remember when it
was Myron Jackson-the student.
"I look at them (the kids) and I see me,"
said the now father of two girls, ages 2 and
4. "1 walked in the same buildings-the
paint still seems to be the same color."
When he first stepped into the field house
at Brahmans Stadium, he pointed and said,

"I remember that. And I remember that."
He'll also remember all that he's been
taught from his former coaches, such as
FSU's Bobby Bowden.
When asked what he brings with him
from his time with the legendary coach of
the Seminoles, Myron flashes a wide grin
and said, "Well, you might hear a dadgum-
mit or two."
But for now, he's following his dad's
advice and keeping things simple. Of his
coaching philosophy, Myron simply says he
expects his players to follow his vision, be
accountable and work hard.
"I'll show them that football is a lot of
hard work, but it's fun," he said. "It's just
a lot more fun on the positive side of the
scoreboard."

iff's Office (OCSO), indicated that he met
with the 41-year-old male victim at 4:29
a.m. Wednesday at Raulerson Hospital. He
stated that the victim had a cut on his left
palm and two cuts on his right forearm.
The victim said he had been in Belle
Glade working and when he returned
home his girlfriend, Castleberry-Laidler,
became angry at him. He said she didn't
believe he had gone to work and was up-
set because he didn't answer her phone
calls, the arrest report stated.
Deputy Saucedo went on to state that
the victim's wounds were treated and
stitched.
OCSO Deputy Paul Jackson took Castle-
berry-Laidler back to the couple's home
where he took possession of a knife be-
lieved to be the one used in the alleged
attack.

Law enforcement to get tougher

on boaters 'under the influence'

"More than 20 percent of fatal boating
accidents are a result of alcohol use," said
Capt. Richard Moore, the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC)
boating law administrator. "The FWC and
our marine law enforcement partners are
making every effort to bring this number
down and save lives."
The FWC, along with the U.S. Coast
Guard and state and local law enforcement
agencies, are participating this weekend in
"Operation Dry Water" -- a national, coordi-
nated effort aimed at reducing boating un-
der the influence (BUI) and the number of
alcohol-related accidents and fatalities.
"Anticipate increased patrols," Moore
said. "We also will be educating the public
about other aspects of safe boating, which
include not only operating a vessel sober,
but having all the required safety equipment
and wearing a life jacket all of the time while
on the water."
In addition to Moore 's position with the
FWC, he is president of the National Asso-

ciation of State Boating Law Administrators
(NASBLA) -- a nonprofit organization that
works to develop public policy for recre
national boating safety. NASBLA represents
the recreational boating authorities of all 50
states and U.S. territories and is the coordi-
nating entity for Operation Dry Water. Forty-
five states and territories are participating in
the weekend event.
"If you're caught boating under the influ-
ence, you may be fined and jailed, your boat
may seized, and you could lose your boating
privileges," Moore said. "But mostly, you are
risking your life, the lives of your passengers
and the lives of other persons out on the wa-
ter."
Boating under the influence includes not
only the effects of drinking alcohol, but also
the effects that drugs, prescribed and other-
wise, may cause. Being under the influence
of alcohol or drugs impairs a boat operator's
vision and reaction time. Sun, wind, fatigue
and other conditions can intensify the effects
alcohol or drugs have on a boater.

Pregnant teens
I think the problem with so many preg-
nant teenagers is not just in Okeechobee. It
is more evident here because the rate is high,
but our permissive society is to blame. Look
at the way Bristol Palin and Jamie Spears are
treated like celebrities just for being teen-
age mothers. Instead of being embarrassed
because they messed up, they are on the
front covers of magazines. What message
does this send other teenagers? And for the
general population, the children of unwed
mothers are much more likely to get into
trouble, wind up in jail or on welfare. Just
check the statistics with the department of
corrections. We need to turn this around.
And I don't think the problem is that birth
control is not available. Some of these girls
get pregnant on purpose.
Should pregnant teenagers be denied
an education? Of course not. They need to
stay in school. However, they should not be
allowed to participate in any of the extracur-
ricular activities. There should be as many
negative things as possible to discourage
teenage girls from becoming pregnant. If it
is treated like no i l big deal by the school, that
is sending the wrong message. Instead of
going to parties and football games, expect-
ant parents should be going to parenting
classes or working part-time to help with the
expenses of the baby. The parents need to
enforce that. And it should be the same for
the boy, although it may be difficult to find
out who fathered the baby.
I think that young ladies with babies
need to be in school, but they need to be
on a separate campus. Pregnant teens are
too glorified on campus. The grandparents
must make the young man and young lady
do their role and not let these young people
off the hook!
It is every parent's nightmare for their
teenage daughter to come home and say
she is pregnant.

I wish I had an answer for the high rate
of teenage pregnancy in the county. I just
don't get it with all the FREE resources here
in town.

main open!! Enroll your students now, space

Cigarette taxes
One in eight Americans are starving
and going hungry on a daily basis, BUT yet
our government still sees fit to send aid to
foreign countries daily!! This Big Brother
business is out of control And then people
wonder why we as Americans are so upset
at the way our country is run. I, for one, am
sick and tired of coming to the aid of every
country that puts its hand out for their piece
of the pie. And at the end of the day there
isn't any pie left for U.S. to have.
Why does the American taxpayer need
to spend 10 million on Cambodia when here
in America we have children going hungry ?
SIf you think
that 10 million
dollars is a drain
on our economy
when we are
spending BIL-
LIONS if not tril-
lions of dollars
to directly protect
ourowneconom-
ic interests at home exactly as you would
like, then your rage is completely misplaced.
I don't get it you guys. Are we arguing that
we should be using the money for welfare,
corporate or otherwise? Bail out that ciga-
rette company that was already hurting from
the recession and an indoor smoking ban?
Your complaint is like getting one hundred
thousand dollars for yourself, then becom-
ing angry at the reckless spending involved
in giving a homeless guy 1 dollar.

Act of war
Would you consider it an act of war if
N. Korea shoots a missile toward Hawaii? I
personally would consider it an act of war if
they did, because how long are we going to
put up with this guy before we do something.
Are we just going to sit back and let him play
a game of how close can we come?

I'm gonna go with "it depends." If it is
clearly targeting Hawaii and to the best of
our knowledge he does have the ability to
reach, then yes. Otherwise, it is an act of
escalation that we need to be prepared for,
but not war. Of course, I'd hope we'd prob-
ably shoot it down before we could find out
which of these is this case. How about we
try our best not to get into another war justi-
fied by assumptions amplified by rhetoric.

Agri-Civic Center
I wish the cattlemen would take their
rodeos back to their outdoor arena. The
Agri-Civic Center is hot and stuffy and since
they added more seats it is even worse. At
the outdoor arena at least you got a nice
breeze.
It was my understanding that the are-
na across from the hospital needed a lot of
work.
I have been in the cattlemen's rodeo
arena since 1973. It holds many, many won-
derful memories of rodeo times where cow-
boys could crack a whip, ride like a wide
open fool, and the productions for "half
time" were so darn
corny, you had to laugh., ,
It did not matter if it
rained, snowed, or any-
thing in between, the
show must go on. The
days where the clowns
were hysterical, the mu-
sic loud and the parade of participants was
so proud, flanked by flags. The times the
horse would throw you in the middle of the
arena cause it was his first time in a crowd.
Talk about a show. It was wonderful, full of
rodeo spirit, and rough and toughness, like
the west is, or was until we have become so
civilized and watered down. I do understand
the need for improvement. So, let's get on
with it and do it. Please. There is nothing in
the world like a live rough stock rodeo! Not
football, not soccer, nothing! It is the true
American sport.

FCAT Scores are in
FCAT scores are complicated, and the
way they are figured is changing this year.
Getting a passing grade will be even more
challenging. One of the factors that strongly
affects Okeechobee is that the lowest scor-
ing percent of students has to show a certain
degree of improvement each year. Getting
those studentsparents to care about mak-
ing improvement is challenging.

Will high performing schools still get
recognition money? I know there is a budget
crisis. That money would be very helpful.
This last school year money was tight. My
school's next step was going to be cutting
paper towels in half.
I challenge all of you to inform yourselves
about the FCAT and see if you can be sup-
portive of all the schools' efforts to improve
scores. I congratulate all those who made
this year's scores a great improvement.

Heat advisory
Be careful out there folks ... it's just not
fit for beast nor man nor woman out there.
The hot weather can be deadly. Make
sure you drink plenty of water. And make
sure that all of your animals have access to
shade and access to fresh water at all times.
It doesn't take long to overheat and go into
heat stroke.

Dogs
I cannot understand why anyone would
buy a dog or a cat as an impulse buy. A pet
is your responsibility for the rest of its life.
If you want to add a four-legged member
to your family, do some research. I recom-
mend checking out the animals available
at the Humane Society pet rescue shelter.
They have some great dogs that need loving
homes. But take your time, figure out what
kind of dog you want and then find the right
one. One reason so many dogs wind up in
the shelters is because people want a cute
puppy and then get tired of it when the new
wears off or when the dog gets bigger than
they expected.
If you have not visited the new pet res-
cue, take a look. It is so different from any
other animal shelter this county has ever

Prepare for hurricanes by safeguarding tax records

WASHINGTON With the 2009 hur-
ricane season now underway, the Internal
Revenue Service encourages individuals and
businesses to safeguard themselves by tak-
ing a few simple steps.
Create a backup set of records
electronically
Taxpayers should keep a set of backup
records in a safe place. The backup should
be stored away from the original set.
Keeping a backup set of records-in-
cluding, for example, bank statements, tax
returns, insurance policies home, etc.-is
easier now that many financial institutions
provide statements and documents elec-
tronically, and much financial information is
available on the Internet. Even if the original
records are provided only on paper, they can
be scanned into an electronic format. With
documents in electronic form, taxpayers can
download them to a backup storage device,
like an external hard drive, or burn them to
a CD or DVD.
Document valuables
Another step a taxpayer can take to pre-
pare for disaster is to photograph or video-
tape the contents of his or her home, espe-
cially items of higher value. The IRS has a
disaster loss workbook, Publication 584,

for the hour lesson is $10. Private instruc-

by-room list of belongings.
A photographic record can help an indi-
vidual prove the market value of items for
insurance and casualty loss claims. Photos
should be stored with a friend or family
member who lives outside the area.
Update emergency plans
Emergency plans should be reviewed
annually. Personal and business situations
change over time as do preparedness needs.
When employers hire new employees or
when a company or organization changes
functions, plans should be updated accord-
ingly and employees should be informed of
the changes.
Check on fiduciary bonds
Employers who use payroll service pro-
viders should ask the provider if it has a fidu-
ciary bond in place. The bond could protect
the employer in the event of default by the
payroll service provider.

County Planning Board recommends

denial of commercial zoning

By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
At their meeting on Tuesday evening, June
23, the Okeechobee County Planning Board/
Board of Adjustments and Appeals acted on
four requests for zoning changes and two spe
cial exceptions.
The board recommended that the county
commission approve Philip Berger's request for
a change in zoning from agriculture to heavy
industrial for a 250 acre parcel on N.E. 128th Av-
enue near the landfill where he intends to put in
an industrial park.
"I believe industrial zoning is vital to our
community," stated board member Ted kelch-

Florida colleges

lead the nation

in graduation
TALLAHASSEE -- Florida's public two-year
colleges lead the nation in graduation and pro
gression rates, according to a recent release of
the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB)
2009 Fact Book. The Fact Book, one of the na
tion's leading sources of comparative higher
education data, annually summarizes and re
ports key higher education data for each of the
Region's 16-member states.
"This report confirms our college's ongoing
commitment to excellence and student success
as we meet the challenges of the 21st century,"
said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith.
"Our colleges have long supported the state's
mission of preparing every student to face the
challenges of our current global workplace, and
this national recognition will only strengthen
that drive."
The Flonda College System's three-year
college graduation rate of 30 percent is nearly
double the southern region's average of 16 per-
cent, and the highest among all 16 SREB mem-
ber states. Flonda's average also greatly exceeds
the national average of 20 percent. These rates
are inclusive of full-time freshmen who first en

Florida's College System is also touted for
leading the region in three year student pro
gression rates. This measure tracks full-time
freshmen enrolled in degree or certificate pro-

who transferred to another college within three
years. At 59 percent, the state's progression
rate is the highest in the region, and 12 percent-

reflects a 14-point increase in student success
rates since 1999.

Stuart Ledis was only partially successful
with his three zoning change requests. He has
two separate properties on U.S. 441 S. E. near
C.R. 15B where he requested a change in zon-
ing from agriculture to single family. If granted,
these zoning changes would allow for one sin-
gle family home per half acre rather than one
single family home per five acres, thus allowing
him to put in subdivisions on those two proper
ties. The third request was for a change from
agriculture to neighborhood commercial for
two two acre lots to be used for neighborhood
commercial development in connection with
the two subdivisions.
The board voted to recommend that the
county commission grant the two zoning
changes to residential single family despite the
objections of neighbors Jamie Busby and Cathy
Schwier. They were concerned about traffic and
privacy.
"I don't believe there is sufficient need for
this project," Mr. Busby asserted. Apparently,
the board did not agree.
However, pleas from other neighbors were
successful in preventing a recommendation for
the zoning change to neighborhood commer-
cial. George A. George and Ronald Vanderhoff
were concerned about the type of businesses
that would move into the area if the request

were approved. Mr. George also expressed con-
cern as to whether or not the area could sustain
commercial businesses and the effect on prop
erty values.
Board member Mack Whorley feared that
the zoning change would create an isolated
commercial district. He made a motion, which
passed unanimously, recommending that the
county commission deny the zoning request for
neighborhood commercial.
A second public hearing on these zoning
change requests will be held before the county
commission at 9 a.m. on July 9, at the health
department auditorium, 1798 N.W. Ninth Ave.
Turning to special exceptions, Sizemore Cor
portion, property owner and Tab Merchant,
applicant, were granted a special exception to
allow for a service station in a commercial zon-
ing district on S.R. 70 E. in the Four Season area.
Kathleen McGee, property owner and applicant,
was granted a special exception to allow for a
second dwelling on a U.S. 98 N. property in
Basinger for her son who requires medical at
tention.

Sea Cadets undergo SEAL orientation training

The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office
youth development program, NSW-Trident,
recently hosted the annual national Sea
Cadet orientation to the Navy SEALs. The
course was an intensive two week orienta-
tion to some of the basic skills required by
the Navy's elite combat units, the SEAL's.
The cadets had an introduction to basic
combat medical procedures, swimming
skills, SCUBA, marksmanship, small unit
tactics, and combat raiding craft,
The training was conducted in Okeecho-
bee County and also at the beach adjacent
to the National Navy SEAL Museum in Fort
Pierce.
Fifteen students from all over the United
States were selected for the training.
The SEAL orientation course is entirely

funded by the National level Sea Cadet pro-
gram, with assistance from active duty com-
mands. The funding is primarily for the stu-
dent meals, fuel and other requirements for
the course. Those funds are spent locally in
Okeechobee County with local businesses.
Instructor staff for the course is provided
by the Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and ac-
tive duty commands. Select cadets from
Okeechobee's NSW-Trident program are
given a unique opportunity to act as "staff
cadets" for the training. Trident staff cadets

Dove Club permits go on sale July 1

The five special-opportunity dove fields
are: Allapattah Flats Wildlife Management

Ranch WMA (Putnam County), Combs
Farm Public Small-Game Hunting Area (PS-
GHA) (Baker County), Hilochee WMA (Lake

Dove hunting opportunities are in high
demand, and these special hunts provide
the perfect social setting for friends and fam-
ily to hunt together. Interested hunters are

encouraged to purchase permits early be-
cause the most popular fields sell out fast,
and hunters who purchase these season-
long permits save more than half the cost of
buying individual daily dove permits for the
season.
Daily dove permits cost $35 and enable
one adult and one youth (under age 16) to
hunt together on one half-day hunt but al-
lows only one bag limit of birds between the
two hunters. Daily dove permits do not go
on sale until Sept. 17.
