Residents at Okeechobee
Health Care Facility (OHCF) are
proving to everyone that Learn-
ing is Truly Lifelong with the
creation of their fifth annual cal-
endar comprised of paintings
by the residents who participate
in an OHCF art program.
The program began in 1999
when Bobbie Harris came to
Sandy Perry, a manager at
OHCF, stating that she wanted
to start an art program to share
her passion for art with the resi-
dents of OHCF.
The program quickly grew in
popularity and a second paint-
ing class was opened. Partici-
pants attend art class two days a
week, for a total of three hours
each week.
Patsy Sullivan began teach-
ing the class in February of this
year replacing Ms. Harris who

Many churches have a
Christmas Tree to celebrate the
season. However, the First
United Methodist Church has a
Chrismon Tree. The purpose of
the Chrismon Tree is to focus
attention on Christ. Each orna-
ment, or Chrismon, tells some-
thing about the life of Christ.
The word Chrismon comes
from two words "Christ" and
"monogram" and it means
"Monogram of Christ."
The colors used have signifi-
cance. White refers to the
Lord's purity and perfection.
Gold refers to his majesty and

glory. Purple refers to our
preparation for his coming.
Green symbolizes new life
through Christ, and red repre-
sents the Holy Spirit.
Not all of the traditional
Chrismons described here are
on the First United Methodist
Church tree.
Probably the best-known
Chrismon on the tree is the
fish, which was a secret sign
used by the earliest Christians
to identify themselves. The
Greek word for fish is formed
from the first letters of the
words Jesus Christ, God's Son,

Methodist Church

has unique Advent

By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
One of the traditions associ-
ated with Christmas is the light-
ing of the Advent Candles. Many
churches participate in this
event, but worshippers at the.
First United Methodist Church
have a unique way to carry out
this tradition.
On each of the four Sundays
preceding Christmas, one can-
dle is lit. The candles represent
Jesus as the Light of the World.
There are different customs as
to the colors of the candles and.
the significance of those colors.
However, one thing that all the
customs have in common is
that there is a fifth candle, a
white "Christ Candle" in the
center. This candle is lit on
Christmas Eye.
Usually the candles are
placed on an evergreen wreath

that represents the eternal life
found in Jesus. However, at the
First United Methodist Church
they have done it differently
since 1994.
The Advent candles at the
church are mounted on a beau-
tiful, hand made oak stand. Don
Minor. constructed the stand in
1994 in memory of his parents
who are now both deceased.
"The Lord gave it to me," Mr.
Minor said of the Advent stand.
"I had no intention of making
In 1994, he was head of the
church board and the ladies fel-
lowship wanted to purchase an
Advent stand for $1,200.
"Why not make one for the
church?" Mr. Minor asked,
recalling that the Lord asks us to
be good stewards.
"It just came together," he

Mr. Minor had never seen a
stand like the one he constructed

In order to cut the circle, he

The hardest part of the job
was locating the glass candle-

found in Tampa.

OFC Teacher of the Year chosen

Mrs. Barbara Quam received
an early Christmas gift %%hen she
was named Okeechobee Fresh-
man Campus' Teacher of the
Year last Friday at the school's
annual holiday gathering. A sur-
prised Mrs. Quam received the
award and a bouquet from Prin-
cipal Andy Brewer. This honor is
voted on, by school faculty and
Barbara Quam teaches read-
ing, and she has been at OFC
since 2004. It is common to see
Mrs. Quam's car in the school
parking lot long after everyone
else has left. She spends hours in
the classroom preparing lessons
to engage and enrich her stu-
dents. Mrs. Quam is a diligent,
committed, and creative educa-
tor, traits which have garnered

her respect of her colleagues
and students. "
OFC's Reading Coach,' Pam
Hudson, said of Mrs. Quam,
"The quote by Aaron Bacall,
'Your heart is.slightly bigger than
the average human heart, but
that's, because you're a teacher,'
describes Mrs. Quam's love of
her students. With every, lesson
she has passion and desire for
her students to learn."
On the last day of school
before the students' holiday
break, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs.
Quam organized a party for the
students'whose reading scores
on the Kaplan test had
improved. All of the students
who attended agreed that, "Mrs.

Holidays are sealed with mistletoe

By Dan Culbert
Extension Horticulture Agent
Many years ago, when I was
at school in Gainesville, the holi-
days crept up too quickly for my
budget. Classes were finally out,
I was headed for home, but the
big question was how to raise
the funds, needed to have nice
gifts for my family. I was always
told that money didn't grow on
trees, but I wasn't so sure.
Up in the branches of bare
Florida trees were clumps of
green. I took a closer look and
realized that this was an unusual
plant associated with the holi-
days Mistletoe. My thinking
went something like this: how
about if I collect a whole bunch
of Mistletoe, take it up home,
and sell it to the florists up there
for lots of Christmas present
A classmate of mine helped
shoot it out of the laurel oaks
and pecan trees in his pastures: I
filled up lots of large plastic bags
of greenery and stuffed them in
the back of my pickup. Soon I
was on the road to riches.....
Unfortunately, when I arrived
at the northern florist shops,
they said I was too late in their
holiday plant sales season for
them to be interested. Other
retailers I approached were
scared of the poisonous nature
of Mistletoe, and telt their cus-
tomers would prefer imitation
plastic sprigs that. could be
boxed and reused another year.
So instead of being flush with
cash to be the King of Christmas
Consumerism, everyone, except
those with small kids and pets,
got a pretty hanging bouquet of
"Fresh from Florida" Mistletoe.
Ever since, I've always won-
dered if this plant could be a cot-
tage industry for Floridians to
help spread the Christmas spirit,

raise a little holiday cash, and
help the health of our urban for-
est by removing this parasite
from trees.
Mistletoe Facts
and Fiction
What's the fascination with
this plant? First off, it has an
unusual habit of growing out of
the trunksof certain trees. It has
its own distinctive green leaves,
stems and white berries with a'
sticky seed inside. As a small
seedling, it roots into the bark
and wood of a tree and makes a
connection with the growing
ring of the host. So it makes its
own food, but this "Vampire
plant" is a parasite, as it steals
the water and nutrients from its
host tree.
The American or Oak Mistle-
toe (Phorandendron serotinum)
only grows in deciduous trees.
In our area this usually means
laurel oaks, but sycamores,
hackberries, elms, and wild
cherry are also know hosts. Oak
.Mistletoe can be found on-trees
from Kansas to New Jersey, but
different species ol Mistletoe are
pests on certain western
junipers and pines, while others
are found on. deciduous Euro-
pean trees.
Because Mistletoe shows its
evergreen foliage when a decid-
uous tree drops its leaves, it was
thought to have some magical
powers. That's where the Celtic
Druids (their priests) got the
idea that it has magical powers.
Scandinavian mythology was
adapted by the English and
French, and gave us the custom

of kissing under bunches hung
around the holidays Here in the
U.S., it's a Christmas tradition to
display Mistletoe, while in
Europe, it's more of a New
Year's tradition.
Careful with
Inside this mythology is a lit-
tle bit of fact. Between 1985 and
1992, U.S. poison control cen-
ters reported 1,754 cases of acci-
dental poisoning of children or
pets with mistletoe. This acci-
dental ingestion of American
Mistletoe can be harmful in rare
cases, so use caution when the
display of this plant may come in
contact with it.
In Florida Yards, removing
mistletoe from a tree may help,
especially if the tree has been
compromised by pests, storms
or old age. There are two meth-
ods, neither of which is easy. It
may be cut out of the tree, but
be sure that the branch that is.
"infested" is pruned several

NEHS students are bike elves
The students in Mr. Stuart's class recently received three old bicycles, Which they
have worked to restore. The students have enjoyed the restoration project and
plan to continue and expand upon it in the future. On Dec. 15, they gave the first
of the bicycles away to an elementary school student here at New Endeavor.
