Family united: Being home for Christmas

David Harvey, Sr. (left) received an early Christmas present when his son Marine
Sergeant David Harvey, Jr. (right) came home for the holidays.

A happy holiday homecoming

By Loma Jablonski
Okeechobee News
There is an advertisement
that states "Join the Navy and
see the world."
In the case of Marine
Sergeant David Harvey, Jr., his
career has revised the saying to
read, "Join the Marines and be a
part of the world."
Sgt. Harvey joined the
Marines in 1999 right after grad-
uation from Okeechobee High
School and has been to more
exotic places in seven years
than most of us will even dream
of in our lifetimes.
He spent nearly two years as
a member of the Marine honor
guard keeping watch over digni-
taries and statesmen in Wash-
ington, D.C.
He's guarded the American
Embassy in Kuwait.
He's marched through the
jungles of Guam and strolled on
the beaches of the Tinian and
Mariana Islands, as well as
.those of the Bahamas and Cali-

He's walked in the footsteps
of past soldiers including his
own father, David Harvey, Sr. in
places like Saipan, the Philip-
pines, Korea and Japan.
He's assisted in rescue oper-
ations following the mudslides
in Thailand.
"I don't like to stay in one
spot too long," explained Sgt.
Harvey. "I get bored."
He did state that his favorite
two places are, the Bahamas
and Guam.
"Their beaches. are really
clean and beautiful," said Sgt.
But, with the holiday season
here, the lure of home was too
great for Sgt. Harvey to ignore
and home he returned to Buck-
head Ridge and his waiting fam-
ily and friends.
"He's been to a lot of
places," said his father, Mr. Har-
vey. "Sometimes it's hard to
keep up with him."
But, this is the life that Sgt.
Harvey dreamed of as a boy.
From the time he was 7-years
old all he talked about was

becoming a Marine.
"He would put on his uni-
form and climb into the trees,"
smiled Mr Harvey.
Sgt. Harvey wanted to be a
Marine so badly that he enlisted
as a junior at Okeechobee High
School in'a deferred enlistment
program. He worked to be in
shape lor the day he would for-
mally become a Marine. He put
his concentration and energy
into the Brahman wrestling
team. His leadership qualities
became apparent when he was
selected to be the team's cap-
tain for two years. He worked
hard, was focused and became
a force to be dealt with on the
team. His dedication earned
him a trip to the state champi-
onship in both his junior and
senior year.
"He was a kid who just want-
ed to be a Marine," stated Brah-
man wrestling coach Bruce Jah-
her. "He was dedicated as a
. wrestler and his dedication to
the Marines continued as he

Christmas is brighter thanks to Mission

By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
For the 12th-year in row,
Christmas is brighter in Okee-
chobee for underprivileged chil-
dren.thanks to the efforts of a
local couple.
Big Lake Missions Outreach,
operated by Bruce and Mary Ann
Swinford, has just completed its
12th annual Christmas Toy Drive.
The mission collected and dis-
tributed toys to children ranging
in age from babies to teens, as
well as all the fixings for Christ-
mas dinners.
The toy drive was the first
project undertaking by the
organization that has been
licensed and chartered with the

and Hamilton called "The Richest
Family in Town!"
The story was told through nar-
rator, played by Sarah Marcinek,
who is reflecting on her past when
she was a young girl who lived
with her brother, two sisters and
her mother.
They had come on hard times
with only one income in their
household though they kept their
heads up and through their fami-
ly's love and faith they were "the
richest family in town."
Their church decided to collect
an offering for a needy family in,
town and the children got so excit-
ed at the idea of being able to help
others, they started coming up
with ideas on how to raise money.
Sammy, played by Christian
Garner, raked leaves; Katie and
Kelly, played by Clara Verano and
Hayley Davis, cleaned houses; and
Becky, played by Missy Marcinek,
babysat a neighbor's children.
While they were raising money
for the family, they sacrificed their
own wants to be able to help those
of another less fortunate family -
even when all they had for dinner
was corn flakes with powdered,
Together the family came up
with another idea to raise money
by making a recipe of their grand-
mother's which they called
"Grandma's Famous Fudge."
Orders started rolling in and the
family raised over $100 to give to

Association of International
Gospel Assemblies since 1995.
About 100 families in need
were worked with on a one-to-
one basis and were given toys to
give to their children on Christ-
mas morning.
Big Lake Missions Outreach
also provides meals to the
homeless and clothes to the
needy. In times past, Big Lake
Missions has received Federal
Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) funds to be used
to purchase food.
Currently, they are looking for
funds to build or purchase a
shelter for the homeless. Anyone
wishing to help this organization
should call (863) 763-5725.
