Representatives from all over Santa Rosa County attended. The main purpose of this exercise is to test operational plan effectiveness and readiness,Ž Santa Rosa County public information officer Brandi Whitehurst said. The exercise included a mock activation of a disas-ter response for county staff and organizations as well as off-site practice of the countys opera-tions plan. Gordon Paulus, media relations officer for Gulf Power, said the com-pany works with the county and public during and after a hurricane. We have two people who are staged at the Emergency Operations Center 24 hours a day throughout the stormŽ Paulus said. They will be there to answer questions for the county and relay any information that they have. And what we will do from a corporate standpoint is that we will be sending out press releases to the public and the media on power out-ages, restoration plans, and things of that sort.ŽPaulus said that customers should download the Gulf Power phone app so in the event of a hurricane they can check on power outages and restorations and other information. Customers can also go online to mygulfpower.com. While the city and Gulf Power make preparations, it is important for residents to know what they can expect this hurricane season and plan accordingly.According to an AccuWeather.com article, experts predict an average to slightly above average hurricane season with 12 to 15 tropical storms, 6 to 8 of those becoming hurri-canes and 3 to 5 forecast to become major hurricanes. While 2017 saw six impacts to the U.S., experts predict three to four for this year.AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Expert Dan Kot-tlowski did not downplay a possibly calmer season. It only takes one big storm, he said, to cause massive damage. For information on hurricanes or other natural disasters affecting the area, visit www.santarosa.fl.gov. Jackson allegedly had over 100 sexual images of children as young as 2 years old on his phone Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said at a May 16 press conference. A ccording to Johnson, Jackson had not registered his phone with the state, which is against the law. Any sexual predator is required to register all elec-tronics with the state.Jackson has been arrested multiple times on counts of child pornography charges, according to the SRSO, in other parts of the country. This guy is what we con-sider in police vernacular to be a dirt bag,Ž Johnson said. He is where he needs to be right now.ŽSRSO: Dirt bag arrestedJackson By Bill GamblinHAROLD„ Some athletes have to wear a helmet because of a sports' dangers.Teenager J.C. Wilson has to wear two of them.Wilson, 15, has been wear-ing a football helmet during spring practice at Milton High School, but on week-end nights you can find him looking through his Simpson racing helmet at a local dirt track."It is definitely different when it comes to helmets," said the linebacker at Milton High School.Although he just got his learner's permit, Wilson first raced as a 12-year-old on dirt in a street stock car at Southern Raceway. He won his first race at 13 by beating his dad, Frank, and being the best rookie in the class. Last season at 14, the younger Wilson dominated the street stock division and beat his father, Frank, for the title by 192 points with three wins. He also starting racing in a more competitive division, 602 Sportsman Late Model, the same season and finished second by 60 points to Miltons Johnathon Joiner."I have been amazed by all of this," Wilson said. "It has been a very fun experience for me."But J.C. is not just a driver. He is a student in dads race shop. While Frank prepares his son's cars each week, the younger Wilson is right beside him helping to tune, adjust and even repair the car when necessary. "He has always helped me out in the garage since he was old enough to walk," recalled his father Frank. "He would stay out there with me until his mom (Raeann) would call him for bed."But as time passed and J.C. talked about racing, Frank explained what it would take for him to buckle up in a race car for the first time."The first part of the deal was his grades and school, then he had to do his chores at home, and finally he had to help me with the race cars," recalled Frank, who has been racing for 27 years. "He really wants to learn all he can about a race car and how to adjust and set it up."Racing is not just limited to Frank and J.C., as Franks brother Stuart occasionally races on the dirt oval.So would J.C. prefer a career on the oval or the gridiron?"If I had my druthers, I would like to compete in the Lucas Oil Dirt Super Late Model Series one day," J.C. said with a grin. "I dream about running against the likes of Scott Davenport, Scott Bloomquist and those drivers."In the meantime, Wilson is grinding through spring practice just off of Park Avenue and is hoping to contribute to the Panther football program under head coach Harry Lees."J.C. is a great kid and I found out recently from Coach (Jason) Summers that he races," said Lees. "I would have to say this is a first for me even after I coached football in Hueytown, Ala., where the Allisons (a NASCAR racing family) are from."I have never coached a football player that was a race car driver."When it comes to Mom, she prefers J.C. behind the wheel, not in the huddle. [JENNIE MCKEON/DAILY NEWS] By Press Gazette contributorJACKSONVILLE„ A new groundbreaking research facility that will focus on aging studies is preparing to open its doors on the campus of UF Health Jacksonville, bringing another vital health resource to the regions academic medi-cal center. The UF College of Med-icine … Jacksonville cut the ribbon on the Jackson-ville Aging Studies Center Monday. The center, also known as JAX-ASCENT, will serve as a hub for behavioral, nutritional and pharmacologic clini-cal trials targeting older adults, particularly racial minorities and people of low socioeconomic status. Researchers will also study social determinants of health that contribute to chronic diseases and functional decline within those demographic groups.Opening a center as big as this in Northeast Flor-ida is incredibly exciting for our organization because it will specifically focus on helping adults as they age,Ž said Tina Bot-tini, the assistant dean for research administration and compliance at the College of Medicine. The research undertaken here will improve lives throughout the country, and were proud to be leading it.ŽOrganizers are using a five-year, $3.6 million award from the National Institutes of Health to develop the center, which is housed in the Professional Office Building at 1833 Boulevard St., Jacksonville. Space renovations began in December and wrapped up in March.JAX-ASCENT will create an integrative physical and intellectual environment in which trainees at all levels, and scientists from diverse disciplines, can interact and conduct clinical and behavioral translational research on aging and independence of older adults,Ž said Marco Pahor, M.D., a professor and founding chair of aging and geriatric research at the University of Florida College of Medicine. This is a won-derful opportunity that brings together research and the community.ŽJAX-ASCENT wants to register 1,000 people each year. Registry members will receive information about the latest research being conducted, and if they qualify, may be invited to take part in a variety of studies. There is no cost to participate and compensation may be provided, as well as transportation to and from the center, if neces-sary. Adults ages 60 and over are invited to join the registry that will help propel research.UF Health Jacksonville and the College of Medicine are dedicated to bringing new, ground-breaking research to this community, and this center is a perfect exam-ple,Ž said Leon L. Haley, M.D., CEO and dean at UF Health Jacksonville. When it opens its doors, it will truly be one of a kind in our region and will involve not only research teams but also patients and volunteers from throughout our city.ŽBottini says older adults, racial minorities and people of low socioeconomic status have been underrepresented in clinical research, making it more difficult to develop the best prevention and treatment approaches to assist them. Administrators believe Jacksonville is an ideal location for such a center because of the high concentration of residents who fall into those demographic groups. For more information or to sign up for the registry, visit UFJaxagingstudy. com or call toll-free at 866-386-7730.UF Health cutting ribbon on dynamic research facility For more news go to srpressgazette.com

My grandpas store was just across the road and I drank too many Pepsi Colas, Dr Peppers and various other soft drinks. As a young adult I drank plenty of diet drinks for a long time. Im not totally soda pop free but I doubt that I drink one a month now. Summer is here with outings and picnics so Ill probably have a couple but Im trying to stay with water and even cut back on coffee. Soda pop is a tough one to overcome. Ive seen people in recent years hang to diet pop right until they were almost dead. Even with failing kidneys and dialysis some people just cannot bring themselves to drink water. This is a serious mistake. Todays adults must wake up to the dangers of drinking too much soda pop. You dont need one every day. You would be better off to limit your soda to one or two a week. Unfortunately people almost live with a diet drink or even a sugary drink in their hands. Drinking water every day is very important. My doctor told me to drink 50 to 64 ounces every day. This seems like a lot of water but a 20 ounce bottle doesnt really take long to consume. The actual amount of water intake for everybody is a bit different depending on how much coffee, fruit and vegetables you are already taking in daily. From everydayhealth.com I read that our bodies use water in all cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because our bodies lose water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, its important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. And then from webmd.com, "Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature." Water is the second most popular beverage in the U.S. after soft drinks. This is a scary stat, since sugary soda is a huge health hazard, upping the risk of obesity, stroke, and other heart problems. However, these dangers can be avoided if people choose to drink water. Consider today putting the sugary stuff to the side and make water the number one drink of choice. The benefits really are endless. Glenn Mollette is an American syndicated columnist and author.Whats your view? Write a letter to the editor.Americas second most favorite drinkGiven his first-hand experience with the massive size, pettiness, cost and overreach of deep-state government in Washington, it is time for Trump to cut about 25 percentof it. Apparently, Muellers special counsel team has so much money they try to fabricate testimony from Russian oligarchs. If government continues to grow at this rate, expect 10 policemen with AR-15s knocking down your door in a pre-dawn raid over your unpaid parking ticket. There are so many areas the government could cut workers, and it would be best done in a good economy where they could find jobs should they really want to work. My suggestion on what to cut is simple. If you can find the government serviceŽ in the Yellow Pages, or your agencys workers are not essential enough to have to come in on a snow day in D.C., then lets cut back. Maybe we should start with Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. That should be the name of a convenience store, not a government agency. Duplicity and stupidity abound in government; state and local governments already police these things. What the ATF!?I was just in Washington, D.C. and visited Mt. Vernon. It reminded me that George Washington brewed booze, hosted horse races, and raised tobacco and hemp, thusbecoming the Father of Spring Break and the patron saint of Panama City Beach. This country was founded on Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. I think it was also my high school prom theme. No government agency has ever made anything better. Prohibition spawned gangsters and the mob. Drug warsŽ financially fueled Mexican gangs. Hard right-wing social conservatives agitate for such issues based on imposing their moral standard. Democrats go along because they love regulating and taxing things.Bootleggers and Baptists is the economic principle that regulations are often supported by odd bedfellows. Baptists and other religious fundamentalists agitated for Sunday Blue LawsŽ restricting the sale of alcohol. Bootleggers sold alcohol illegally, and they sold more when liquor stores were closed, thus this holy and unholy alliance.Baptists lowered the costs of political favor-seeking for the bootleggers because politicians can pose as "moral" in supporting Baptists, yet they know they are helping bootleggers. Regulation also stifles free markets and creates barriers to entry in entrenched businesses. Consider our regulated cable TV oligopoly, where costs rise and service stinks. If you wonder why Mark Zuckerberg welcomed regulation in his business when he testified before Congress, then this explains it. Mostly regulations harm consumers and help big business to keep competitors and innovation at bay. And lobbyists fuel this injustice.Senators have asked Major League Baseball to ban smokeless tobacco. They feel strongly that tobacco should be only be enjoyed the D.C. way: by having your cigar lit with a $100 bill from a lobbyist. Hillary would have banned cigars in the White House for nonsmoking related reasons. Coors Stadium would be the last to ban beer. To be fair, Coors beer is so watered down it is the official beer of child custody hearings.Think of what our FDA did to re-fuel the heroin epidemic. By pushing legal opioidsŽ for pain, they hooked the nation on a pill that has a street value of $200. A town of 2,900 in West Virginia got 20.8 million painkiller pills shipped to it. Youd think that town would replace Disney World as the Happiest Place on Earth.Ž But, it didnt; the pills ruined lives and increased heroin use. Leave it to our government to make heroin more cost-efficient than legal pills. In West Virginia, being clean and soberŽ just means you have showered before you head to the liquor store or to see your drug dealer. As a libertarian, my view is: Smoke all the crack you want; just dont expect me to pay for your rehab or not shoot you if you try to steal my lawnmower. Legalize everything and educate people so they can make informed decisions. Show pictures of Keith Richards to those who want to smoke and do drugs. Put pictures of morbidly obese people riding a Rascal scooter around Wal-Mart on Cinnabon bags. You get the idea. Educate and let idiots wean themselves out of our gene pool. I doubt Trump will cut ATF, since he doesnt drink and takes a dim view of it. We should be thankful he doesnt drink; studies show that alcohol increases the size of the "Send" button by fifty percent. Ron Hart is a libertarian op-ed humorist and awardwinning author. ** Santa Rosa Press Gazette | Saturday, May 19, 2018 B1LIFESTYLE By Press Gazette contributorMILTON „ Teams of athletes set out in a relay event May 17 to run 134 miles across Santa Rosa County over the course of 55 hours ending May 19. These 60 athletes are working as teams to carry 134, 1-pound weights across 134 miles. Each weight bears the name of an officer who died in the line of duty in 2017. The ruckers, as theyre called, are traversing the entirety of Santa Rosa County. They started at Bear Lake. Theyll proceed through Navarre and end at the Santa Rosa County fairgrounds in Milton. They will do this to show support for those who gave their lives in the line of duty and to show that we carry the weight of the loss of these officers with us. The event, called the End of Watch Memorial Ruck, is in its first year. Santa Rosa County Sheriffs Deputy Caleb Cook, the First Judicial Circuit Law Enforcement Association and Joshua Schwitzerlett organized it. Having participated in a number of endurance events for myself, I decided it was time to put my efforts into something bigger than myself,Ž Cook said. Everything about the EOWMR honors the fallen and shows support for our officers who continually carry the weight of a days shift home with them.Ž The event seeks to raise funds for the FJCLEA, an organization whose primary goal is to provide financial support to members of the criminal justice community and their families during times of need and provides charitable support to childrens advocacy organizations. ** B2 Saturday, May 19, 2018 | Santa Rosa Press Gazette SPORTS & OUTDOORSBy Press Gazette contributorThe 2018 hurricane season is approaching. Preparation means more than just creating a disaster kit and reviewing your familys disaster plan, although these are critical first steps.Theres much more you can do to protect your home and family before hurricane season begins June 1. You can minimize potential damage from flooding and high winds by being prepared. Plan Ahead€ Document items and con-tents in your home in photos.€ Buy a National Flood Insurance Policy from your insurance company. Stan-dard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. Only about half of Florida homeowners inside high-risk areas had insurance against flooding before Hurricane Irma made landfall Sept. 10, 2017.€ See msc.fema.gov/portal to know the flood risk in your area and see www.floodsmart.gov for informa-tion about risk and rates.€ Download the FEMA app at www.fema.gov/mobileapp. The app provides disaster resources, safety tips, maps of open shelters and weather alerts from the National Weather Service. Go to www.Ready.gov for more details.€ There are many ways to strengthen your home against wind and wind-driven rain. FEMAs Wind Retrofit Guide for Residential Buildings is a good resource.€ Consider elevating appli-ances such as water heaters, air-conditioning units and electrical equipment.€ Trees with trunks larger than six inches in diameter should be far enough away from your house they cannot fall on it. Remove branches that hang over utility wires. Professional regular prun-ing done can create a sturdy, well-spaced framework of branches with an open canopy that allows wind to flow freely through.€ Coconut palms need spe-cial pruning. During a Hurricane Watch„Hurricane Conditions are Possible € Stay tuned to your phone alerts and TV or radio for weather updates, emergency instructions and evacuation orders. Severe weather infor-mation is also available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at www.noaa.gov.€ Activate your disaster plan. Check your disaster kit. Important items include flashlights, battery-powered radios, batteries, medical, accessibility and pet supplies, cash and first-aid supplies.€ Remove coconut bunches and bring the coconuts inside.€ Place important papers and documents such as driv-ers licenses, social security cards, passports, birth cer-tificates, vehicle registration cards and insurance policies in a waterproof, portable container.€ Know what you and your family will do if there is an evacuation order. During a Hurricane Warning„Hurricane Conditions are Expected Within 48 Hours€ Stayed tuned to phone alerts and TV or radio for weather updates. € Fill vehicles with gas.€ Keep mobile devices fully charged.€ Bring any loose items like trash cans, yard furni-ture„including items on your dock„barbecue grills and tools inside; store in a garage or sturdy building.€ Disconnect electrical appliances.€ If you evacuate, turn off gas and electricity at the main switch or valve. For additional information on hurricanes visit www. ready.gov/hurricanes. For information on floods visit www.ready.gov/floods. The main thing is that I know theyll work me hard and they believe in me.ŽAs a senior, the 5-foot-8 star played above her height in averaging 12 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and a block for a Gators team that finished 17-5 and advanced to the Elite Eight before a 47-43 season-ending loss to Port St. Joe. Now she joins a stacked Gulf Coast State recruiting class that includes Fort Walton Beach guard P-Nut Payton. But the transition from Baker to Gulf Coast State wont be seamless. Especially as she rehabs a torn ACL to her right knee.I had surgery a few months ago, so I should be ready for next season,Ž Watts said. I know its going to be for sure hard work, but coach (Kathy) Combest has helped me prepare for the transition. I already lift and run, so it will just be building on that.ŽColeman, Watts teammate on the hardwood, always thought shed be going to college for basketball. But things clicked her senior year on the vol-leyball court in helping lead the Gators to a 21-4 record and Elite Eight appearance. My feelings on basketball changed and they shifted more to volleyball,Ž Cole-man said.Coleman played for Allen her freshman year at Choc-taw before transferring. Allen, who led Choctaw to a state title this past season, influenced her decision to continue her playing career at Gulf Coast State.Yes, because I knew him and really like his coaching style,Ž she said. I also went to some basketball camps there and loved the campus.ŽAs for her role, Coleman said whatever position coach Allen needs me, Ill play.ŽAs for her focus off the court, Colemans future is planned out. My goal is to do two years at Gulf Coast State, get my degree and then go to the NWF State Police Acad-emy,Ž she said. I want to be a detective.ŽPanama City boundBakers Ayajah Coleman signs her National Letter of Intent with the Gulf Coast State College volleyball program on Tuesday at Baker School.
