The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners approved to submit the project application to RESTORE Act. The Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act was set up in 2012 as part of the aftermath of the BP oil spill. The RESTORE Act dedicates 80 percent of all administrative and civil penalties related to the Deepwater Horizon spill to a Gulf Coast Res-toration Trust Fund and outlines a structure by which the funds can be utilized to restore and protect the natural resources, ecosystems, fisheries, marine and wildlife habitats, beaches, coastal wetlands, and economy of the Gulf Coast region. This restoration project is complementary to the Pensacola East Bay Oyster Habitat Restoration project that is cur-rently under its design phase. The project is funded by the National Fish and wildlife foun-dation Gulf Environment Benefit Fund Grant. Contrary to what you hear from the mainstream media, his numbers are higher than Obamas were at the same point in his presidency. Trump has disrupted Washington, which is what he was sent there to do. Tax and regulation cuts have ignited the economy, unemployment is at a 17-year low, and the stock market is rolling. Trump may even bring peace to the Korean Peninsula. There is talk of a Nobel Peace Prize; I bet Trump would kill for a Peace Prize. Yet with all the revelations of Playboy Bunnies and porn stars in his past, his biggest challenge will be if he can make peace with Melania. In the tradition of the great peacemakers of our time, JFK (brokered the Soviet Unions removal of nukes from Cuba) and Bill Clinton (stopped ethnic cleansingŽ in Bosnia), now Trump fixes North Koreas nuclear buildup. I guess accomplished womanizers hate to see the earth blown to smithereens until they are done bedding as many women as they can. His personal attorney and fixer,Ž Michael Cohen, has been the one paying these women for their silence. $130,000 seems to be the number they arrived at for a one-nighter with Trump. So he is also bringing high-paying jobs to women. Winning! Cohens payment was the first time a prostitute was paid money not to make a loud noise. If Michael Cohen made a $130k illegal payment in kindŽ to Trump, then how about formally prosecuting the media for their billions of dollars worth of in kind,Ž always favorable coverage for Democrats over the years? Absent any workable ideas of their own, the left and their puppets in the media continue trying to destroy Trump with his base, the religious middle-income working class. Its not working. Midwesterners and we Southerners seem unfazed by Trumps past. In fact, it was pretty much in his brochure when he was elected. We seem to be saying, Yeah hes a cad, but hes our cad.Ž Ron Hart is a libertarian op-ed humorist and award-winning author. Contact him at Ron@RonaldHart.com or @ RonaldHart on Twitter. Whats your view? Write a letter to the editor.Just Another Week in the Life of Our Very Stable Genius R o n H a r t Ron HartW.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, the great British musical maestros, declared in their 1882 operetta IolantheŽ that every boy and every gal thats born into the world alive is either a little Liberal or else a little Conservative.Ž These were the dominant British political parties of the Victorian age. The government of the United Kingdom was stable, except for sustained pressure for independence for Ireland. That was granted in 1921, after a bloody struggle. The nation traditionally has had a stable two-party political system, though that is changing. Early in the 20th century, the Labour Party replaced the Liberals. Over the past half century, the Liberals and successor Liberal Democrats gained, along with Scotland and Wales nationalist parties. On May 3, local government elections took place in England „ though not in Scotland or Wales. Independence in those regions have resulted in elected regional assemblies, and governing powers devolved from London. The Conservative Party, which holds the national government, experienced small losses. The opposition Labour Party made modest gains. At the same time, British voters continue to reject extremist movements. The far-right UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party) suffered devastating defeat, holding or gaining only three seats while losing 123. This trend contrasts with notable and growing support for far-right parties elsewhere in Europe, including France, Germany and Hungary. UKIP decimation contrasts with the partys peak in 2014, and continues a trend visible at the level of Parliament. British voters have been most likely to support UKIP at the level of European Union elections, where representatives have the least power and symbolic statements can be made without fear of significant national political impact. The Liberal Democrats also gained control of some local councils, though not in total vote. Long-term revival from near-oblivion led to entering into a coalition government with the Conservatives following the indecisive 2010 general election. Under the cover of formal collaboration, the Conservatives ruthlessly undercut their government partners. The Conservatives won a narrow majority of House of Commons seats in the 2015 general election, which decimated the Liberal Democrats. Measurable Liberal revival began in the early 1960s, spearheaded by the charismatic party leader Jo Grimond. The 1980s brought the new Social Democratic Party, led by breakaway Labour leaders, which merged with the Liberals into the Liberal Democrat Party in 1988. Political stability is the bedrock fact of life in British politics that historically is firmly rooted and unchanging. In the 17th century, the nation experienced violent revolution, removal and execution of the reigning monarch, bloody civil war, and military dictatorship under Oliver Cromwell. This lengthy extraordinarily violent period was succeeded in the latter 1600s with restoration of the monarchy, return of the traditional Parliament including an elected House of Commons, and reaffirmation of the rule of law. In our time, the British have maintained stability through flexibility in institutions as well as policies. Regional assemblies for Scotland and Wales are one result. Regarding the elections this month, Professor John Curtice of Strathclyde University in Scotland argues the results show policy does matter. Specifically, continued public sympathy for Brexit „ shorthand for leaving the European Union „ helped to bolster Conservative support. Sir John has become an increasingly visible and influential expert on political and public opinion trends. While Britains political processes can appear complex, the long-term success of their representative government and competitive party democracy is clear. Britains stability contrasts with some political trends in Europe „ and the U.S. Arthur I. ** B2 Saturday, May 12, 2018 | Santa Rosa Press Gazette SPORTS & OUTDOORSBy Lt. j.g. Luke Rague | NAS Whiting Field Public Affairs StaffMILTON „ An active duty enlisted master-at-arms stationed onboard Naval Air Station Whiting Field placed second in the World Kickbox-ing Association Asian-Pacific Championships March 12-22, an international K1/Glory style Pro-Am Event at the 3rd International Thai Mar-tial Arts Games & Festival in Bangkok, Thailand.Master-At-Arms 2nd Class Sebastian Rivera participated in the Muay Thai competition as a member of Team USA, earning the silver after a loss to teammate Michael Carson. Rivera won his first fight against Italys Corrado Rubwo with a second round technical knockout. He then won by forfeit when Bangla-deshs Yahsam Hajih backed out after watching Rivera knockout Rubwo, advancing Rivera to the finals.Riveras draw to Muay Thai was an unexpected change from his initial goal of a fight-ing career in the more popular sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). I became interested in Muay Thai because of how unrelenting the sport really is,Ž he said. My intentions were to compete in MMA with a solid base in striking, but I fell in love with Mauy Thai and decided to focus strictly on that art.ŽRivera previously spent time training in other mar-tial arts disciplines, studying Jujitsu and Judo. But for the past three and a half years, Rivera has focused almost solely on Muay Thai. He believes it has helped him both professionally and in his personal life.Mauy Thai has brought a calmness to my life. Know-ing I dont have to fight every battle, it has helped me with patience as well,Ž Rivera explained. Being in the law enforcement field, I think my training will allow me to control many situations if things get physical. It has also allowed me to understand there is really no need to become violent.ŽRaised in Cutler Ridge and a graduate of Homestead High School, suburbs of Miami, Rivera has strong roots in the state of Florida. He has participated in local fights in Crestview and he won his first title fight, the International Kickboxing Federation Wel-terweight Title, July 23, 2017, in Orlando, Florida. But Rivera is not confining himself to the state of Florida. He has competed throughout the country in the pro-am circuit up and down the East Coast, in New York, Delaware, Virginia and South Carolina.Still, he was eager to compete in new places, especially internationally. So when Team USA gave him the opportunity, he jumped at it. After getting permission from his chain of command and completing an overseas medical screening, Rivera was ready for an experience of a lifetime.Thailand was wonderful. I enjoyed the food, how inex-pensive everything is, how kind and polite the people are,Ž Rivera said. My favorite part of Thailand was experiencing the fight life. Every single night there was an event where fights were being held, from live national broadcasted events to local stadium events.Ž The only part of the trip that Rivera didnt like was leaving. He returned with more experience and a better perspective on how to succeed in future competitions. I realized my actions prepping me for competition, as difficult and exhausting as they already are, need to be improved,Ž Rivera said. I am experimenting with my meal plan to promote a well-rounded diet. I have altered my workout plan to focus on my weaker areas. After com-peting alongside high-level fighters and coaches, and hearing them tell me I have what it takes to make it, I know I have the skillset to go far in this sport.ŽThe suggestions and encouragement from every-one he trained with are driving Rivera to aim higher and work for invitations from bigger organizations, such as Lions Fight Promotions, Glory Kickboxing, and Bellator Kickboxing.Training is always on the agenda. I have my whole year planned out,Ž Rivera said. I plan on fighting in Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, Orlando, South Carolina, Spain and even locally. I would like to turn profes-sional soon, but I will not rush myself.ŽRivera also plans on staying in the Navy. With nine years in already, he plans on serving at least 20 years and pursu-ing the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) route from enlisted to officer. Either way, he looks forward to future sea duties. The best time Ive had in the Navy so far was on deploy-ment,Ž Rivera said.Whiting Field sailor places second in international martial arts competitionABOVE: MA2 Sebastian Rivera (left) stands in the ring with fellow Team USA member Michael Carson (right) for the World Kickboxing Association Asian-Paci“ c Championships “ nal at the 3rd International Thai Martial Arts Games & Festival in Bangkok, Thailand on March 22. [PHOTOS COURTESY MA2 SEBASTIAN RIVERA] By Press Gazette contributorMILTON „ The West Flor-ida Baptist Academy Lady Conquerors ended their 2018 softball season with an overall record of 18-3, including win-ning the Panhandle Christian Conference Championship Tournament.WFBA entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the East Division and earned a bye to the second round of single elimination, facing Snook Academy of Robertsdale, Ala., who advanced by defeating East Hill Christian of Pensacola. Versus Snook, Allie Whiting tossed a 2-hit shutout with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Ayanna Kelker led at the plate going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's. The team's batting average was .440 en route to a 10-0 victory.Central Christian Saints of Robertsdale defeated the host, Santa Rosa Christian Eagles, in round 2 of single elimination to face the Lady Conquerors in the double elimination quarter finals. Conqueror's senior Jessica Lunsford pitched a complete game 8-2 win and went 2-4 at the plate. Katelyn Leavins led in RBI's with 2.In a noon, Saturday semi-final game, WFBA met the undefeated Bayshore Christian Eagles of Fairhope, the #1 seed in the West, who recorded 2 regular season wins versus WFBA.Bayshore entered the semi-final by eliminating Atmore Christian and defeating Aletheia Christian in the quarter-final.Allie started for West Flor-ida and enjoyed a 7-2 lead entering the 5th inning, but then Bayshore rallied for 3 runs. Lunsford entered in relief with 1 out and runners on 1st and 3rd, struck out the next batter, and then recorded a 5-3 ground out to end the inning. That's as close as the Eagles would get as the Lady Con-querors rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th on 2 RBI hits by Kelker and Alyssa Johnson and 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th by an inside-the-park grand slam by Allie. The final score was 15-8 with Allie credited with the win and Jessica the save. Johnson finished 3 for 5 with 4 RBI's, Madison Whiting 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Kelker 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs.Central Christian advanced to the championship game by eliminating Aletheia and Bayshore. The Lady Conquerors hot streak continued, though, as Lunsford allowed 3 hits in 4 innings with 1 walk and 1 strikeout in a complete game 16-1 victory. Allie was 3-3 with a walk and 1 RBI, fol-lowed by Johnson 2-4 with 4 RBIs, Leavins 1-2 with 2 walks and 1 RBI, and Meghan Teevan was 1-2 with 1 walk and 2 RBIs.Jessica Lunsford earned the Tournament MVP."Jess had Central's number all year and she got the big strike out and ground out in saving Allie's win against Bay-shore," Coach Steve Whiting said. "That settled this team, gave them confidence...Katie Lynn (Leavins) helped her look real good, too. She caught all four games, kept the runners in check, made an awesome pop out catch, hung on to several tipped strikeouts, and her bat and RBIs came alive all weekend...This was a great season with a greater group of girls. The deputy spoke to the resident, Lydia Stewart, who said a white male „ later identified as Barfield „ was knocking on her windows asking her to come out-side, the report said.Stewart told the deputy she has been having trou-ble with Barfield harassing her over the past week and was afraid of him.According to the report, Stewart walked to another room in her home and called a friend, Zackery Price, and asked him to come over. While on the phone with Price, Stewart told the deputy that Barfield began knocking on her door.Price told the deputy that Barfield was standing on the porch of Stewarts house when he arrived. A few minutes after Price chased Barfield off the property, Price said Barfield returned and said, I have something for you,Ž and threw a hammer in their direction.Stewart said it did not hit her, but it did hit Price. Price said he did not wish to press charges for battery. The deputy found Barfield an hour and a half later walking at the intersection of Hazelhurst Drive and Cameo Drive. According to the report, Barfield admitted to having an interaction with Stewart and Price.Barfield told the deputy he did not go to Stewarts house, but that they came to his house and Price hit him with a bat. The report said that Barfield had a very slight bruise on his left chest.Stewart told the deputy she first met Barfield a week ago when he walked up to her in her front yard asking for her name and if she had a boyfriend. Stewart said she felt afraid of Barfield and told him to not come back on her property.Stewart said on May 6, during daylight hours, Barfield was walking by her house constantly staring at her and her kids.Ž Stewart said she wanted to press charges for stalking and aggra-vated assault. After arresting Barfield, the deputy learned he was on felony probation and was supposed to remain confined to his Cameo Drive address. Barfield was also charged with felony probation violation with no bond.He is being held at the Santa Rosa County Jail on a $15,000 bond. Before throwing hammer, man says I have something for you; deputy has something for him tooChristopher Leon Riley Bar“ eld was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail on charges of felony probation violation, aggravated stalking and aggravated assault. [SANTA ROSA COUNTY JAIL] Pace man charged with stalking woman, throwing hammer By Press Gazette contributorMILTON „ The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission filed these cases between April 20 and 26 in Santa Rosa County: OVERSIZED RED DRUMOfficer Wilkenson was on vessel patrol conduct-ing boating safety and fisheries inspections in the Intracoastal Waterway (Santa Rosa Sound) near the Navarre causeway. The officer saw a vessel with two occupants actively fishing with rods and reels. The fisheries inspection revealed there was an oversized red drum, measuring 30 inches in total length. The vessels owner/operator received a notice-to-appear citation.LOOSE GARBAGE ATTRACTS BEAROfficer Nichols responded to a bear nuisance complaint in the Navarre area. A homeowner called the Tallahassee Regional Community Center to report that a bear had remained on his property for the entire day and night. When the officer arrived, he contacted the homeowner and saw the bear by the base of an oak tree. Officer Nichols hazed the bear to run the bear back into the woods. The officer inspected the homeowners property to determine what caused the bear to come to his residence. Officer Nichols saw household garbage contents strewn in the wooden area next to the homeowners residence. The officer determined the household garbage came from the homeowners garbage can. The homeowner was educated on the laws in securing food attractant and garbage cans. The homeowner was issued a non-compliance letter.Bear complaint among FWC incidents[SPECIAL TO THE PRESS GAZETTE] FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION PLEASE RECYCLE THIS PAPER
