When asked if they had any political aspirations, Michael Constantine (middle) said he might consider a federal position in the future. However, James Wade (left) emphatically said, No. By PAMELA HOLT 623-2120| @pamelaholtpg pholt@srpressgazette.com Bob Cole said after being a county commissioner for 12 years, hes most proud of the projects hes started, planned and nished, including the Avalon Boulevard improvement project. Avalon was the rst road to receive stimu lus money because of where it was in the process, he said. Cole said it was his idea to fund long roads for improvements and repairs, like Avalon, in sections. Being able to do this, he said, enables the state to get the project nished in a timelier man ner, and it puts more people to work, especially small contractors. Cole said the state adopted this practice after he lobbied Florida Department of Trans portation to do so. Bob is up for re-election for Santa Rosa County Commissioner for Dis trict 2. I like to get things done, he said. Redening economic development in the county is important to him, he said, because quality of life within the county is precious. I worked diligently with the eco nomic development director to ex pand current business and seeking out new businesses. Today, Goldring is building a new facility, and Navy Federal is bringing 500 new jobs to Santa Rosa County. Even though its a temporary facility, I have hopes Navy Federal will grow and have San ta Rosa County as a satellite facility, he said. I use common sense and save money by looking to stop redundancy within county operations, he said, and picking up the phone and asking for help, such as the $1.5 million sav BOB COLE By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 alittle@srpressgazette.com Alan Lowery, Santa Rosa County native and retired Milton Fire Depart ment captain of 30 years, is running for Milton City Council Ward 3. He said he appreci ates how local votes count after losing by 12 to Grady Hester four years ago. Low ery has also sat on the Mil ton storm water committee for three years and the board of adjustments for eight months. Lowerys credentials in clude being a key player in the last major annexation for the city around U.S. 90 between McDonalds and Food World in 1999. As a councilman, Lowery said hed push for a better alternate route for U.S. 90 and stand for keeping the court house in downtown Milton. He said the roads in his ward, like Dog wood Drive, Park Street, Sanders Street, and Mag nolia Street received work recently so surfaces in his ward are lower on the prior ity list. The number one thing is to be fair. Whats fair for you should be fair for me, Low ery said. He said some people feel theyre treated differently by the city compared to others. Lowery tied this idea to busi ness saying hes heard from many people in the business community its easier to grow in Santa Rosa County than in Milton. The most important trait Lowery said hed emphasize on the coun cil would be fairness followed by openness. The city of Milton has au dio recordings of its council meetings available through the clerk, and Lowery said the city should either tele vise city council meetings or make them available on the Internet. Hed also like to see more meetings held at times when people with daytime working hours can attend. Support for Israel in Seville Square Dear Editor, If my Jewish doctor hadnt called me the day before the pro-Israel rally in Seville Square, I would have missed the most exhilarating event in some time. Kudos to Mike Bates for organizing. I found out later he was instrumental and talking it up for six weeks. The event was extremely well attended by pro-Israel Christians, including little ones holding signs, and it was thrilling to say the least. All the speakers from Israel and statewide were a blessing, especially Mike Hill, our legislator. The closing by Joey Rogers, Pace Assembly, with his Holy Ghost prayer quoting Old and New Testament was indeed a Hallelujah shouting catalyst. The groups behavior while protestors marched through the crowd with the PLO ag was exemplary. Bottom line is many believe Israel has the right to defend herself, to destroy the great number of terrorist tunnels and is to be commended for providing humanitarian aid for Palestinians. They warned Gaza of forthcoming strikes in an attempt to prevent civilians harm. Hamas, conversely, is cruel to Gazans by hiding behind civilians using hospitals, schools and private houses from which to execute their barbarian assaults. Shame on them. As for Kerry attempting to negotiate peace with terrorists, he needs the revelation that such is an impossibility. By their own admission, Hamas et al want to kill Jews, Christians and wipe Israel off the map and will raise an Islamic ag over the White House. Hamas, forget it. God, whom Jews and Christians worship, will protect Israel forever. Sitting in the hot sun for two hours wasnt fun, but worth witnessing tremendous support for Israel. God bless us all as only He can, Maranatha. Chrys Holley Milton First responders do their job to help society Dear Editor, The free market determines what people earn. Government is the only entity that determines its own pay. Santa Rosa County is under attack with a jobless market. First responders, like most doctors, do the job for a reason of helping others, not for the riches of the job. This aspect, like many others in our ever changing society, is trending to more of a personal enrichment mentality. Government jobs are trending to a pay higher than the surrounding free market jobs: better pay, benets and government-supported retirement than 90 percent of the rest of the population who are the ones paying for these services out of their weekly checks or year-end taxes. The lower middle income people are being squeezed at every point by higher prices, taxes and health care, if you can afford it. There are many arguments as to people making more money, but society must be in a position to afford government pay raises. Society doesnt need a re department if it is ghting over bridges it can live under. Society doesnt need a doctor if that cost puts them under the same bridge. Police normally investigate a crime after it happens, rarely during the act of the crime. If anyone wants to jump on the bandwagon about pay and rst responders, lets talk the 18-year-old kid dumped on a battleeld, with thousands trying to kill him and the little money he makes and the health care provided when dodging death to come home injured. You people need to quit complaining and count your blessings for what society has afforded you. As a rst responder, you have very little to complain about until you are a medic or a police ofcer on an active battleeld like Omaha Beach. These people complained far less and deserved far more, but society does what it can afford, and unfortunately, thats trending to be less because we are all making less. Join our club. Steven King Milton Every day, we turn on the television and hear about all the wars in the Middle East. Life is bad in the Middle East. Take your pick of Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and currently Israel and the Gaza strip. We arent hearing good news from any of those places. So whats new? The cold murder of Maj. Gen. Harold Greene and other soldiers this week is a reminder that we cant even trust the people we are trying to help. These people have been killing each other for thousands of years. Why after all these years can these people not learn to live at peace and help each other? They hate each other as much as or more than ever before. They are barbaric as ever with bigger weapons. News hasnt changed much. So whats new? Ebola is big news because the disease is so deadly. In Atlanta, Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly are now ghting for their own lives. These two good people have been helping the sick in Liberia and contracted the disease. Every day, people in Africa are plagued with HIV, sickness and death from drinking dirty water, plus much more. Americans battle rampant cancer, diabetes, heart disease, neurological diseases, blindness and more. The news doesnt seem to change. Here we are in 2014 with all of modern medicine, and every day, we are ghting the ugly war of a multitude of health problems in America. The news is the same. So whats new? The weather is news. The Hawaiian Islands this week are facing two hurricanes of major size. The largest storms in a long time are bearing down on the tiny islands. Soon, the Gulf Coast and Florida can expect sizable storms and hurricanes as the season is now here. A major argument against fossil fuel use is climate change. I dont think we can blame every storm and hot day on using coal and oil. However, the world is changing, and within the next 20 years, we will see a large reduction in fossil fuel use as we turn more to natural gas, wind and solar energy. I predict we will continue to see hurricanes, tornadoes and hot weather. However, treating our planet kindly with cleaner energy should be something that a modern civilization would want to do. Unfortunately, many dont care as too many can only think about today, me, my and I. So whats new? We all saw something wonderful this week at Stirling, near Perth Australia. Hundreds of people used their combined strength to push a subway car off a mans leg. A handful of people could never have accomplished the task. A huge number of people spontaneously joined efforts and saved a mans life. They accomplished a miracle. This was great news. Im glad our elected American Congress and senators werent there. They could never have combined their efforts to save that man. So whats new? Glenn Mollette is an American columnist and author. TUESDAY 6:13 A.M. I think the people need to look at the VA bill that has been passed. This is Kenneth. If you look at the VA bill, youll see that the primary purpose of the bill was to get votes for politicians. Very little of that bill is going to help the VA system. Lets look at one of the big problems. The big problem was falsication of records. What caused this falsication? In my mind, I think it was the bonuses being paid. If we do away with the bonuses, maybe they would not try to falsify records, and maybe they would pass on the truth of whats really happening in the VA. I see nothing in this bill that helps in this problem. Also, the amount of money in this bill is very small compared to the big problem that exists. Unless you can get more doctors and more people to administer the system, the backlog is only going to get greater, especially with the people we are putting out of this service from Afghanistan. Thank you. TUESDAY 3:35 P .M. Hello, I just want to know what is wrong with this county. I saw gas went up 10 cents, and I just heard the news that Alabama is only $3.04, the least in years. What gives? Are our taxes that much more? And why does each station go up at the same time? Are they all owned by the same person? How do they get word to each other? WEDNESDAY 9:50 A.M. Hey, this is Dennis. Robin Williams will be missed. I know rsthand how drugs and alcohol can destroy your life. I drove my life into a ditch by being separated from God and too much alcohol. The Bible says dont be getting drunk. A person can drink so much alcohol that they are not in their right mind, and they will say and do things they would not normally do. As for me, I ran to my Creator and asked for forgiveness and help. It took a little while but the Great Physician straightened me out. He restored my joy and peace. That old saying when you hit rock bottom, youll nd out who your real friends and family are is true. I found out I did not have many. Even a few Christians turned their back on me, but the Lord put my feet on solid ground, and I am still there. WEDNESDAY 3:18 P .M. I heard that rolls of toilet paper will now be made without the little cardboard cylinders in the center. This will prevent millions of the little cylinders from going into landlls. How about a whole house complete with bathroom xtures, a/c heating unit, and kitchen cabinets and appliances going into the local landll. A ranchstyle brick home on Woodbine Road has just been bulldozed to make way for the developers huge storm water retention pond and the huge pile of rubble, which was once a brick house will not be hauled to our local landll. Just sort of mind boggling isnt it? How many more landlls are going to be needed in our not-too-distant future? Thank you. WEDNESDAY 1 P .M. Chrys here. While trying to execute our civic duty, to hear candidates before voting, my friend and I couldnt nd the new Bagdad Fire Department. An hour and a half was consumed looking for it, part of which was in the car waiting to be rescued from a ditch. One man offered to lead us to it if we followed him. Hes probably wondering what happened to us. We were so grateful to the more than 15, the rst being Bubba Watsons sister, who offered help. It was pouring down rain. Thanks, too, to Connie Clark, who agged down heavy trafc on Old Bagdad Highway while AAA rescued us. Good job, Kell. GLENN MOLLETTE There are many arguments as to people making more money, but society must be in a position to afford government pay raises. Society doesnt need a re department if it is ghting over bridges it can live under. Society doesnt need a doctor if that cost puts them under the same bridge. Police normally investigate a crime after it happens, rarely during the act of the crime. Ebola is big news because the disease is so deadly. It took me two weeks to remove the derelict Sea Ray cabin cruiser, which was abandoned in Navarre Sound for two years and cost the county noth ing, he said. In the future, Cole said he wants to take a strong look at building codes and ordinances, making it easier on new and established small businesses to build and expand in our local economy. He also wants to establish a funding source for storm water management. We can plan and master plan all day long but we havent gotten any where. Its time to put money aside for projects needed in the future. If you dont it wont get done, he said. BOSTON from page A1 Im a candidate for the children, teachers, and education, she said. I believe in being calm, reasonable, and pragmatic. Just because a process is go ing well doesnt mean there isnt room for improvement. Every organization can seek improvement, she said. Boston said she is the only candidate currently working in the Santa Rosa County school system. She is working as a substitute teacher and has since 2001. I am a multidimensional candidate. I understand the school system from the teacher, parental, student and admin istrations perspective. Ive taught all grade levels in the school system plus I have sales and business experience and am currently serving on the county zon ing board, she said. Boston said she is a rm believer par ents should decide what type of educa tion is right for their child. She said she supports public, private and home school opportunities. Its great we have options for education. We arent all square pegs. Some of us are stars, some are ovals. LOWERY from page A1 Lastly, he said ordinances need to be simplied. According to Low ery, theyre difcult to understand for most. Theyre not wrong, he said, just tough for people to grasp. These ideas, Lowery said, would promote more open governance, another trait he said hed encourage as councilman. RENFRO from page A1 ing tools he brought with him, he tat tooed two of the girls. Witnesses testied that they had seen Renfro giving the tattoos and engaging in sexual acts with the girls. The Santa Rosa County Sheriffs Of ce conducted both the investigation and arrest. Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Pace prosecuted the case. By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 alittle@srpressgazette.com Pace Fire Department is still part of the group of re departments under Santa Rosa Countys Municipal Ser vice Benet Unit (MSBU), at least until the next election cycle. The department, under the command of Chief Donnie Wadkins, wanted to create its own district in Pace, wherein it could assess taxes of the citi zenry in the new district and not be gured into the MSBU pool. Wadkins said during Mon days board of county com missioners meeting, Pace is growing, and Pace Fire De partment has to grow with it. Pace is growing so fast now I need to open another re sta tion on Highway 90. Citing the need for more men, he also said, I need to buy a new re truck now, but I dont have the money in the budget. Wadkins said his aim was not to raise taxes, but to see if the people would want a special re district. If the new courthouse goes to Pace, he said it would be a burden be cause of the number of people being there. But we can handle it. We want to handle it, he said. Commissioner Jayer Wil liamson, who rst praised the Pace Fire Department for the job it does, asked Tony Gomil lion in Public Services if there would be any adverse effect of this change. Gomillion couldnt give a number but said it wouldnt be insurmountable. Commissioner Bob Cole said his concern was not hav ing heard yet from the other department chief. How is this going to af fect their business model? he asked. With Pace being as large as it is, Commissioner Don Salter said, My concern is were going to end up with seven to eight little re de partments trying to fend for themselves. Commissioner Lane Lynchard said he supported the referendum saying, The people living in that precinct can make their own decision. Lynchard also cited ballot tax increases from the last two election cycles, one at Ava lon and one for Midway Fire Department, which passed. County Administrator Hunter Walker said Avalon, Midway and Holley-Navarre Fire De partments have a special leg islative district, which is what Pace is seeking. Lynchard did concur with Salters concerns and said they should come up with a plan if PFD does leave the MSBU. However, regardless of any pros and cons, the elections ofce did not have time at this point to handle the special cir cumstances in this situation. Supervisor of Elections, Tappie Villane, sent an email to Santa Rosa County Admin istrator Hunter Walker saying, The books closed for the pri mary election on July 28. Once the books close and numbers are nalized with the state, we are unable to go into the system and change street seg ments and/or create precinct splits. She said precincts 2, 19, and 24 would have to be split. She also said time was even more of a factor with mili tary ballots needing to be sent out 45 days in advance. Villane said the nonbind ing referendum, or straw poll, would not actually establish the district. That takes an act of the state legislature, she said. Barring any kind of special election, Pace will have to wait until the next round of regu lar elections, two years, to try again. Pace FD to remain in current MSBU A A RON LITT L E | Press Gazette During Tuesdays Milton City Council meeting, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 566 Commander Norman Chapman presented a plaque as an award to the council recognizing the city for its dedication and support honoring wounded veterans. He said he grew up in Milton attending T.R. Jackson Elementary and went on to graduate from Florida A&M University. He said FVF at the state capital provides nancial emergency aid to veterans in need. Sanchez also shared with the council the Florida Veterans Walk of Honor program, which will replace all of the bricks at the capital in honor of a veteran of any military service. At right As Col. He gave an award of special recognition to Katina McDaniels, right, in MPDs records department and Corporal Mike Cline for taking on new responsibilities without complaint and starting programs of their own accord. They were chosen because theyre absolutely go-to kind of people. They take on new tasks with vigor, Brand said. Cline, Brand said, handled various department activities, such as the Click-It or Ticket and railroad crossing programs. Brand also said Gulf Power barred MPD from using its light poles to hold their Speed Spy traf c data collection devices. Cline worked with the Milton Street Department, Brand said, to nd existing signs for the devices and create the bracket needed to hold them. McDaniels, Brand said, automated two previously manual items for the department and put together intersection diagrams for the of cers. This she did of her own accord, Brand said, and has obliterated backlogs since being on staff. These are not the only good employees on staff but they stand out. Theyre humble people, but dont confuse that with being nave or unwilling to work. Public access gate closed for NAS Whiting Field Golf Course Special to the Press Gazette Because of mandated security requirements, access to the Naval Air Station Whiting Field Golf Course will be restricted to patrons with authorized base access. The public access gate on the north side of the course is now closed. The NAS Whiting Field Morale, Welfare and Recreation department currently is developing a guest card program that will allow civilian players access to the course following a standard vetting process. Until the package is established, public players must be accompanied by another golfer with authorized base access to play the course. Players wishing to use the course should call the golf course clubhouse at 623-7348. A golf course representative will provide current information about the guest access package and can take contact information to call back once the process is in place. Once the guest access package is completed, it will take about three days for a patron to be cleared for entrance to the installation and for the MWR guest card and MWR guest vehicle pass to be issued. Once authorized, patrons wishing to play the NAS Whiting Field golf course should access the installation via the east or west gates. A driver license, registration and insurance paperwork will be required at the gate as will the MWR guest card and MWR vehicle pass. The west entrance gate to NAS Whiting Field is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is on Langley Road off FL-87. The east entrance gate is open from 5 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The east gate is closed on holidays and weekends. It is on East Gate Road off Munson Highway (FL-191). At some point around 12 years old, my mother explained to me the importance of a hope chest, which is to begin a collection of items stored away for a girls future home and family. She gave me a set of pink dishes to start the process. Today, I have the same hope chest plus three more given to my children for their future families. However, I dont believe either one of my girls chests ever held dishes, linens or knick knacks for their future families. If I were to look in any one of their chests I would nd high school memorabilia, favorite dance shoes, baskets, photos, scrap books and such. Inside of my chest lies a different array of items. Southern girls know about hope chests regardless of whether or not they have one of their own. Modern day southern culture still dictates a young girl starts her collection of special items in preparation of her future home and family by about 13 or 14 years old but sometimes they will receive one in their later teenage years. According to Wikipedia, the collection of a trousseau was a common coming-ofage rite until about 1950, but being my mother began my collection in 1981 I think this fact may be inaccurate. My girlfriends all had hope chests and we would take a peek into one from time to time. My friend, Leigh, began her chest at 15 years-old and gathered different items than myself as she started with linens and picture frames whereas I began with dishes and cutlery. Her chest was always neatly organized and she had big plans. Whenever I opened my chest the pink dishes were an enigma to me at 12 years old. Who would eat off of these dishes one day? Where would I nd a pink tablecloth? My chest was inherited and belonged to my great, great grandmother who travelled on a stage coach at some point. Its a round top, antique chest which was stored away in a great aunts attic for years and was given to my mother in which she began my hope chest. A true heirloom. Currently, it sits quietly in my living room and inside is a quirky array of memories: scrap books, favorite dolls of both mine and my girls, baby and kindergarten art, my husbands favorite knick knacks from his childhood bedroom, two special blankets, a large bride doll, my wedding shoes, a bag of my childrens baby teeth (labeled for each child), and old newspaper clippings of articles I wrote a long time ago with two manuscripts I wrote in the 90s. It holds my mothers wedding dress and my grandfathers christening gown. I also have a braid of my great, great grandmothers hair. My chest now collects memories of days gone by. Whenever I open the chest, it stirs happy emotions and sweet reminiscing. I think back to the day when I was 12 and opened the chest and wondered who and what would it eventually hold. Now I know it holds a lifetime. Hunter McKinney, 14, visited three South Florida Disney Theme Parks sponsored by the Sunshine Foundation. Founded in 1976, it is the very rst wish-granting organization to grant the wishes of seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children ages 3-18. Avalon Middle School student Hunter McKinney is 14 years old. His smile is extraordinary all while his body suffers from Cerebral Palsy. The light in his eyes as he attempts to connect with you does not re ect the health issues he lives with. The look in his eyes and his smile are inspirational. Next Wednesday, Aug. 20, Hunter McKinney will have yet another surgery seeking relief and comfort for his body. His family will be right by his side as they have been every moment of his life. After going through so many surgeries in his 14 years, we can on rely on our faith and pray that everything will be according to Gods plan for Hunter and our family, McKinneys mother, Roseann McKinney, said. She does not become visually emotional as she describes her only sons circumstances. She carries the fear within her, doing her best to be positive for her child as only a loving parent can do. Roseann uses strategies to discuss Hunters life. She spells out many words as she describes his illness. Her goal using this strategy is not to deceive her son about anything that is going on, after all he is very aware of the card he has been dealt. She uses the strategy of spelling out some words as a way to protect Hunter from the daily stress. Hunter has been going down h-i-l-l recently, she said, carefully spelling out the word hill. Hunter who sits patiently as his mother talks immediately recognizes the word she spelled. Hill, Hunter says with an ear to ear grin of satisfaction. In dreams you will lose your heartaches. Cinderella By BECKY BONDURANT Special to the Press Gazette beckysrpgsports@yahoo.com In the 1960s, police of cer Bill Sample was assigned duty at the community hospital for children in Philadelphia. During his assignment there, he became burdened for the critically ill children. He also recognized the stress families caring for their children were experiencing. Families provided care, support and love for their child all while growing secretly frustrated with enormous medical expenses. In 1976, Sample applied for and received a personal loan. From that sacri ce, Sunshine Foundation was formed. His desire to provide any type of relief for the children and their families for any amount of time became his mission. Seriously ill, physically challenged or abused children and their families bene t from his passion. Today, the Sunshine Foundation serves familys nationwide making dreams come true. Whatever you wish for, you keep. Have faith in your dreams and someday your rainbow will come smiling through. Cinderella Dreams really do come true. Hunter McKinney cuddles with the stuffed Mickey Mouse he was given on his vacation to Disney World sponsored by the Sunshine Foundation. His local pediatrician Dr.Teresa MaHaffey gave Hunter and his sister Brooke McKinney Mickey Mouse ears to enjoy on their trip. After the realization Hunter needed additional surgery, Roseann knew she had to nd a way for Hunter to enjoy this moment of his life and to not be cumbered by his wheel chair or surroundings. She had previously initiated a plan to achieve Hunters dream of visiting Disney World by contacting the Sunshine Foundation. Her application was complete and her family had been placed on a three year waiting list. We do not know a time limit for Hunter, but we are aware that other things are going to happen, Roseann continued. With that realization, Roseann contacted the Sunshine Foundation again she had to make Hunters dream come true as quickly as she could. Plans for the McKinneys trip became a priority; every detail of Hunters dream fell into place. Hunter and his family spent ve days in the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Lego Land. The McKinneys were provided lodging at the 22-acre Dream Village that is sponsored by the Batchelor Foundation of Miami. Their family cottage was decorated as if they were in Lego Land. The most intricate details of the two bedroom cottage had been designed. Every detail of the cottage was related to Legos; the shower, the lamps, the beds headboard all to provide each family visiting with a place to relax and enjoy the moment together. We were treated so normally there, Roseann shared. There were no whispers and stares. We stayed up until 1:00 a.m. enjoying the Magic Kingdoms Electrical Parade and reworks. Hunters favorite park was Lego Land. My husband Joseph and I have never seen Hunter like he was those ve days. He woke with a smile and went to sleep with a smile, remarked Roseann. We did not have to shelter him from anything, she added. The village grounds were all accessible for those with special needs. As Hunter attempts to share his thoughts about his trip, his smile says it all. He cuddles with a stuffed Mickey Mouse character he received and attempts to vocalize some words to share his experience. We are making every day the best it can be, Roseann said. His adventure to South Florida gave him so many things to smile about. Hunters dream came true. No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dreams that you wish will come true. Cinderella Treasure chest

Coach Scott Campbell said he is excited about the start of the season this Thursday, Aug. 21, in a pre-season tournament at Northview High School. Campbell is starting his sixth year as the coach for the varsity Royals. Last year, the Lady Royals nished with a winning season, 13 wins and only nine losses. With losing only three seniors from that squad to graduation, Campbell said he is optimistic about this season. Our back row defense is one of our greatest strengths on the court, Campbell added. We also have some heavy arms serving the ball. The girls seem to really like each other, Campbell continued. They work really well together and work very hard. The Royals nished their summer practice games with a 10-6 record. As they prepare for the upcoming season Campbell knows where the girls need to work on improving. We really have to keep the ball in play. We need to make the other team make the mistakes, he said. These girls will do anything I ask them to do, Campbell said. That really makes it fun to be their coach. With the optimistic attitude and the talent the Lady Royals enter their season anticipating the October district playoffs. Central travels to Jay on Monday, Aug. 25. Junior varsity games begin at 5:30 p.m. with varsity following.
