By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 alittle@srpressgazette.com This week the Santa Rosa County Sher iffs Ofce reported arresting Melvin Doug las Hawthorne, 34, of Jay for grand theft of a motor vehicle. According to reports, a deputy responded to the victim in reference to the stolen vehicle Sunday. The victim said Hawthorne stole his truck while he was sleeping between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. According to reports, the victim and his wife said Hawthorne came to their residence the day before about 5 p.m. dropped off by his mother so he could ride with the victim to the bar belonging to the victims wife. The victim said he returned to his home with Hawthorne at 2 a.m., ac cording to reports. He found the vehicle and Hawthorne missing when she returned be tween 4:45 a.m. and 5 a.m. Reports said the victim told the deputy Hawthorne knew the truck could start just by turning the ignition due to the key broken off inside because hed ridden in the truck several times before. He also told the deputy he wanted to pursue criminal charges for the theft of his truck. The deputy went to Hawthornes residence and found neither him nor the truck and an other deputy found neither at Hawthornes girlfriends residence, according to reports. The same day, the second deputy re sponded to the victims address in reference to Hawthorne returning with the truck, re ports said, and found Hawthorne lying on a swing on the front porch. The victim said he still wanted to pursue charges against Hawthorne. Based on the victims report and the deputys own observations, he arrested Hawthorne for grand theft of a vehicle. Santa Rosas Press Gazette| A3 Saturday, July 5, 2014 Special to the Press Gazette Along with plenty of recrackers and hotdogs, Fourth of July is expected to bring a holiday heat wave with temperatures forecast to reach the upper 90s later this week in Northwest Florida. Keeping your home and business cool and comfortable is what gets us through this time of year and Gulf Power customers can still save on their electricity bill even with the high temperatures by following these helpful tips: Set your thermostat and leave it During the summer, your air conditioner is the biggest consumer of electricity. For many homes, it accounts for more than half of the summer electricity bill. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher. For every degree below that setting, youll use 10 percent more electricity on the cooling portion of your electricity bill. Set the thermostat even higher when at work or away from home for long periods of time, but no more than ve degrees higher. Change or clean your air conditioner lter regularly. Dirty lters restrict airow and reduce efciency. Use your ceiling fan for more comfort. Only turn it on when youre in the room. Ceiling fans only cool people, not rooms. Clear outside AC units of plants or brush so they can run more efciently. Energy Select Energy Select is an advanced energy management and pricing program offered by Gulf Power that can help you save money and energy. You get: A thermostat you program for comfort and savings. Online Programming You can now program your Energy Select thermostat from any computer with internet access. A special rate that features four different prices based upon the time of day, day of week and season. And, because the price you pay is lower than the normal rate 87 percent of the time, you can choose to buy electricity during lower-priced periods, which saves you money and energy. FREE installation. Insulate Increase attic insulation, which can save you up to 30 percent on cooling and heating costs. Insulation is measured in R-value, which is a measure of resistance to heat ow; the higher the R-value, the better the insulation value. Experts recommend you use an R-value of R-38 in ceiling areas. Check your windows and doors for air leaks. Install weather stripping or caulking if needed. Refrigerator Choose the right size refrigerator for your needs. Larger models use more energy. Open and close the refrigerator door quickly. Know what you want before opening the door. Make sure your refrigerator door seals are airtight. Check it by closing a piece of paper in the door, half in and half out. If you can pull the paper out easily, you may need to make some adjustments or replace the seal. Keep your food covered. Moisture buildup in the refrigerator makes the air inside harder to cool. Dishwasher Run the dishwasher, dryer and the stove after the sun goes down to avoid adding heat to your house. When using the dishwasher, turn off the drying cycle if you dont need dishes right away. Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it. Partial loads can use just as much water and power as a full load. Lighting One of the best ways to save energy is to simply turn off lights that arent in use. Use uorescent lighting or CFLs when possible. They last about 10 times longer than incandescent lamps. And, they can produce four times more light than standard incandescent lamps for the same amount of energy. Use one large bulb instead of several small ones in areas where bright light is needed. Use smaller lamps in work areas, like sewing areas and computer desks, so you dont light the entire room. Lighter-colored walls, drapes, blinds and upholstery reect light. Dark colors absorb heat and require more articial light. Customers can get a free Energy Checkup online or at your home with an appointment. Gulf Power energy experts will analyze your house and electricity use, and look for ways to make the house more energy efcient. Just go to MyGulfPower. commygulfpower.com or call 1-877-655-4001. Never in our countrys history has an administration used our government so aggressively against its enemies. It has attempted to harm opponents through selective prosecutions, thereby sending a message to anyone who might be in opposition. Government, armed with layers of laws on the books, can arrest anyone in America it pleases. If a policeman follows you in his car from New York to Miami, he will nd a reason to pull you over. Consider a few of the recent, contrived cases brought by Democrats against Republicans. I ask any liberal out there to show me a list of such prosecutions of Democrats by a Republican administration when the latter was in power. Dinesh DSouza: I know Dinesh, a kind and thoughtful man. He wrote The Roots of Obamas Rage, which did a masterful job of explaining the root causes of Obamas contempt for traditional American values. He also gave us the movie 2106: Obamas America before the 2012 reelection. That put him on the enemies list; he was prosecuted for causing a Dartmouth friend to donate $5,000 to the GOP opposition to New Yorks Senator Hildebrand. Never mind that the Supreme Court has ruled that violated the First Amendment. The Feds sought Dinesh out and got him on this dubious charge. He will spend 10 to 16 months in jail. Even liberal law professor Alan Dershowitz says Dinesh was singled out: I cannot help but think his politics had something to do with itit smacks of selective prosecution. Phil Mickelson: A pro golfer who publicly lamented his tax rate of 63%, saying he might have to move out of California with its 13.3% state tax. Fast forward to a few weeks ago: The SEC is reported to have gone after him on a charge of insider trading. He supposedly got a third-hand tip from a Las Vegas bookie about something. It was a very weak case at best, leaked to the media to teach Phil a lesson. Sheldon Adelson: The largest GOP donor and owner of the Las Vegas Sands Casino found himself the target of dual probes by the SEC and DOJ. (Of course, the probes were leaked to the press.) The Justice Department theory was that drug users money goes to dealers who pay Mexican drug gangs for drugs. The money then goes through Adelsons Sands Casino to GOP candidates. Perhaps Dems are just mad they have been unwittingly funding Republicans. If a customer gambled on an outcome with the low odds the Justice Department had in this case, Adelson would have his casino send a plane for him. The Haslam Family of Tennessee: Republican Governor Bill Haslams family gas station business was ceremoniously raided by the Feds (FBI and IRS) last year. Gov. Bob McDonnell: A rare GOP governor in Virginia, McDonnell was prosecuted by the Feds because his wife supposedly accepted small gifts from a businessman. The government stretched the law to the breaking point to bring this suit, said an attorney involved. Gov. Scott Walker: One of the rising stars in the GOP, who fought abusive unions in Wisconsin and survived a recall election they manufactured in 2012, is being hassled by the Feds. That paragon of honesty, the most reverend Al Tawana Brawley Sharpton, said on PMSNBC that Walker is the center of a nationwide criminal scheme. This is the same Honest Al Sharpton who had to admit to being a New York mob informant. (I am not sure what made the Maa think Sharpton would honor any oath of silence.) He says he is not worried about mob retribution, but he does ask his driver to turn down the bass in his Denali as they roll through Little Italy. There is no way that the above dubious prosecutions of various conservatives are just chance. Add the non-prosecution of Democrats like James Clapper, who bold-face lied to Congress when he said the NSA was not spying on us. Why didnt Holder prosecute him? The Democrats are in the majority and have been since 2008. Would you not think there would be an equal number of high prole Democrats prosecuted by the DOJ? It would be nice to see a debate between Obama and someone on the right, like Stephen Hayes, on why this is happening. I think its because no one is paying attention, and the media is not covering the continued abuses. It could be like the LincolnDouglas Debates and, like that historic event, no one would watch it on TV. Especially if the Kardashians are on. Page 4 RON HAR T The Hart Beat www.srpressgazette.com Saturday, July 5, 2014 A Section OPINI O N Obama Administrations Selective Prosecution of Opponents A couple of years ago, President Barack Obama, speaking on the economy, told an audience in Osawatomie, Kansas: The market will take care of everything, they tell us. ... But heres the problem: It doesnt work. It has never worked. ... I mean, understand, its not as if we havent tried this theory. To believe what the president and many others say about the markets not working requires that one be grossly uninformed or dishonest. The key features of a free market system are private property rights and private ownership of the means of production. In addition, theres a large measure of peaceable voluntary exchange. By contrast, communist systems feature severely limited private property rights and government ownership or control of the means of production. There has never been a purely free market economic system, just as there has never been a purely communist system. However, we can rank economies and see whether ones that are closer to the free market end of the economic spectrum are better or worse than ones that are closer to the communist end. Lets try it. First, list countries according to whether they are closer to the free market or the communist end of the economic spectrum. Then rank countries according to per capita gross domestic product. Finally, rank countries according to Freedom Houses Freedom in the World report. People who live in countries closer to the free market end of the economic spectrum not only have far greater income than people who live in countries toward the communist end but also enjoy far greater human rights protections. According to the 2012 Economic Freedom of the World report by James Gwartney, Robert Lawson and Joshua Hall nations ranking in the top quartile with regard to economic freedom had an average per capita GDP of $37,691 in 2010, compared with $5,188 for those in the bottom quartile. In the freest nations, the average income of the poorest 10 percent of their populations was $11,382. In the least free nations, it was $1,209. Remarkably, the average income of the poorest 10 percent in the economically freer nations is more than twice the average income of those in the least free nations. Leftists might argue that the free market doesnt help the poor. That argument cant even pass the smell test. Imagine that you are an unborn spirit and God condemned you to a life of poverty but gave you a choice of the country in which to be poor. Which country would you choose? To help with your choice, here are facts provided by Robert Rector and Rachel Shefeld in their report Understanding Poverty in the United States: Surprising Facts About Americas Poor (9/13/2011, http:// tinyurl.com/448j8). Eighty percent of American poor households have air conditioning. Nearly three-fourths have a car or truck, and 31 percent have two or more. Almost two-thirds have cable or satellite TV. Forty-two percent own their homes. Ninety-six percent of poor parents stated that their children were never hungry because they could not afford food. The bottom line is that there is little or no material poverty in the U.S. At the time of our nations birth, we were poor, but we established an institutional structure of free markets and limited government and became rich. Those riches were achieved long before todays unwieldy government. Our having a free market and limited government more than anything else explains our wealth. Most of our major problems are a result of government. We Americans should recognize that unfettered government and crony capitalism, not unfettered markets, are the cause of our current economic problems and why the U.S. has sunk to the rank of 17th in the 2013 Economic Freedom of the World report. MONDA Y 9:31 A.M. This is Mary, a concerned senior citizen. Ive been watching the news about the immigration problem. I remember our nation was founded on the laws of God and the Bible. Our forefathers believed in God, and they were very patriotic, and they loved their country. I have a solution to illegal immigration. All these people over here that dont love America, that stomp our ag and burn it, yet have all their benets Americans gave their lives for, I think that we should do a trade. If these people want to come over here to a free country and live and work, the non-workers should be traded over there where they can do nothing. Let them see how it is to live in a country with no freedoms. Thank you. MONDA Y 2:41 P .M. I dont believe whats going on over here at the jail. You go and ask for somebody and they give you 300 places to go. When you want to nd out why a person is in jail, they have all kinds of accusations from stealing, to speeding, to having no license. Whats going on here? We need to close all the liquor stores in Santa Rosa County. If I had the power, Id close every one of them, a dry county, like long before. If you want liquor, go to Pensacola and drink the whole city. Maybe that helps Pensacola. Bye. TUESDA Y 9 A.M. I am calling about that 100-year-old, two-story building at Chumuckla Elementary. The rest of the school is great. My kids and my cousins kids loved it. The class size is small, and the teachers are really good. Almost all the rooms are nice, but that one building needs to be shut down. Its got rickety re escape stairs and old tilted stairs on the inside and a lot of reports of sick people from the age of the place. Come on, Santa Rosa. Do we really need to have kids in a place like that? There are only a few rooms in there. Cant you close it up? Thanks. Can the city do better? Dear Editor, Im very disappointed about many things in our little town. For example, Milton being on the most endangered list. So many articles in the paper in reference to locations of the new courthouse; which one are we supposed to believe? Ive noticed on several occasions our city, as well as county ofcials have the cart before the horse. According to the Santa Rosa Press Gazette, the county paid the HOK rm a ridiculous amount of money ($262,000), to draw up plans of a new court house to be built at the present location. The city hired a task force to make a study. At least they presented an estimate of how many available parking places the courthouse has. No amount was listed as to how much the city paid for the study. It cost a large amount of money to nally get the present courthouse location on the ballot in November. I was surprised at the city council, coming up with a tie vote on the issue of permission to sell liquor on Sundays, and thanks to our mayor who broke the tie vote preventing the Sunday sales. There is nothing lovable about any of the old historic buildings, excluding the present courthouse in downtown Milton. It was knowing, being acquainted with the people operating the businesses, and as long as there are still a few of us old timers still living, they will be remembered after our generation is gone. Life in the thirties and forties will become history. The Firemens park, created by the City of Milton, is very disappointing. Not even a picnic table. I wrote a letter in reference to the park, which was printed. I stated how I would love to see a memorial listing all past re chiefs and volunteers so in years to come relatives can walk up to the monument and say he was my dad, grandpa, uncle, etc. In all sincerity, I believe the city can do better than what they have done. CONCERTS from page A1 By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 alittle@srpressgazette.com Theyve got some pretty big expansion plans, said Santa Rosa County Ad ministrator Hunter Walker regarding Milton Aviation Partners looking to increase their lease to include addi tional property at the Peter Prince Airport. According to the memo, Archie Col lum, senior partner with Pe ter Prince Aviation Center (PPAC), sent to the commis sioners, More than 60 per cent of the leased area was lost meeting state and local development requirements. Currently, the investors have split the ight train ing school to operate nine aircraft in Gulf Shores, Ala. This cost the county the eco nomic impact of eight fulltime employees. Accord ing to Collum, Lifeguard Air Ambulance also is in nego tiations with PPAC to stage emergency aircraft there on a 24/7 schedule, which will also require maintenance and fuel from the airport. The memo also includes a map indicating PPACs an ticipated expansion, includ ing parking for ve aircraft, three helicopter pads, as well as a third building to act as a Lifeguard facility. Walker said actions by the commission would be to di rect staff to work with PPAC on an agreement. County commissioners moved to ap prove the request at the last county commission meeting. Coming from First United Methodist Church Crestview, he was youth minister and teaching pastor. Here theres only one pastor, he said smiling. Dasinger said he and his wife Kelli have two children: Kenzi, 4 and Caleb, 7 months old. Caleb was adopted. Kelli and I have a heart for orphan care and adoption, he said. Dasinger will continue the community efforts Reverend John Webb established in reaching the lost. I have a desire to help the community locally and internationally, and increase the amount of service for the neighborhood, he said. One of the questions Dasinger said he keeps in mind when thinking about a local church is if First United Methodist Pace were to disappear, would the community notice. Local Santa Rosas Press Gazette| B3 Saturday, July 5, 2014 By MICHAEL WILLIAMS Special to the Press Gazette Although the United States participation in the World Cup ended in a 2-1 loss this week, people around the world are still tuned in to watch the big gest tournament in soccer. However, beyond the glamour and roar of the soccer stadiums, there is a darker side of Brazil. With the Brazilian government having spent an estimat ed $14 billion to host the games, residents of Brazils infamous favelas, or ghet tos, are feeling slighted by their own government in fa vor of a sporting event only benetting foreign tour ists. In fact, RioonWatch a community reporting website based in Rio de Ja neiro reports large scale strikes happening as early as 2011. Alex Ruas, a local gym owner and mixed martial arts instructor, knows what life is like in a favela lacking basic necessities such as electricity and running wa ter. Even though Ruas left Brazil in 1996, he still peri odically visits his homeland and understands the plight of those protesting the World Cup. We had no power, Ruas recalled. We had no Health Department. We had to be able to dispose of garbage over the hill. The situation is not very clean. A lot of kids die from mal nutrition in Brazil. Adding to the growing discontent in the favelas, the Brazilian government also forced many residents to move out of their homes in order to make way for new infrastructure, lodg ing, and stadiums designed for both the World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Statistics vary on exactly how many residents have been displaced; with re ports from saying as many as 170,000 people through out Brazil have been evict ed since 2009. The govern ment does offer a sort of reimbursement, but many residents claim that these settlements are worth a fraction of the value of the house. They (the government) come in and make you an offer on your house, Ruas said. You only have so many days to leave. They dont really offer you, they force you to take the brib ery, per say. And I have a couple of people that I knew personally that had to move to a worse area in Brazil be cause they tried to clean up Rio de Janeiro so it can be a tourist playground. These protests are unique as they arent con ned to the slums of the inner-city. Vice News re ported for the rst time in recent history, many col lege-educated Brazilians are taking to the streets to protest budget cuts to schools and hospitals to make way for World Cup funding. For Ruas, this mat ter is personal My mother passed away because the hospitals over there neglected to check her heart. This is because the money that was going toward the hospitals in that country is now going to the World Cup, he said. Even after the World Cup ends, Brazilians will still be taking to the streets to protest the 2016 Summer Olympics, which will report edly be the most expensive in history. Even though Bra zil is arguably the most soc cer-fanatic country in the world, Ruas says its people are fed up with the grow ing problem of government corruption, over-spending, and lack of sympathy for the poorest and most vul nerable citizens. Brazilians are hopeful these protests will be a wakeup call both for Brazil and for the rest of the world. Ruas, however, is skeptical. Lets be honest. We have a very selective memory. Until a revolution happens, Brazil will never change. With this dictatorship, somebodys got to suffer.
